Top Hybrid available in Germany VOLKSWAGEN is taking advance orders for the new Jetta Hybrid in Germany. The Jetta is one of the most successful VW model series; indeed, it is the best seller in the USA of all German automakers. The new Jetta Hybrid makes its debut as a model that relies on an alliance of a 110kW TSI turbocharged petrol direct-injection engine and a 20kW electric motor. Combined, VW says, they give impressive performance with a top speed of 210km/h tempered by a fuel consumption of only 4.1litres/100km, meaning CO² output of only 95g/km. That’s about 20% less fuel than a conventional vehicle of comparable size and power. At the press of a button, the Jetta Hybrid can cover two kilometres in pure battery mode – a drive source automatically chosen by the car whenever possible. An energy-flow indicator informs the driver of the system’s drive status. Power flows to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The Jetta Hybrid is offered in the two equipment versions Comfortline and Highline. Either can be recognised by specific hybrid features, among them badges with blue backgrounds. The hybrid design is continued into the cabin with customised accents and decor strips and Hybrid-specific upholstery. Standard gear includes an RCD 510 radio-CD system with digital radio reception which display the car’s energy flow status, multifunction display “Plus”, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering-wheel, automatic aircon and ParkPilot auto parking assistant. Additional standard features in the Jetta Hybrid Highline include bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, fog lights, 17” alloy rims and a premium multifunctional display. Unfortunately for interested South African buyers, VW has no plans to bring the Jetta Hybrid to our shores. The new Jetta Hybrid will be offered from mid-April 2013 with German prices starting at the equivalent of R350 000. – Wheels24

Brio adds to Honda’s lyrics SINCE the first Ballade reached South Africa in the early 1980s, Honda cars have been associated with musical names. Along came the Jazz and now there’s the Brio – a musical notation requesting the score be played with verve and energy. Hondas have also always appealed to buyers from anywhere, but “entry level”. At one time they were even seen as a second family car behind a Mercedes, but that was when Mercedes ran the Honda show in South Africa. The Brio changes all that. The cars were first shown in prototype form at the Thailand International Motor Expo in November 2010 having, Honda says, “been developed with the needs of fast-growing markets in south-east Asia and other developing regions in mind”. Honda CEO Takanobu Ito, speaking at that premiere, emphasised the importance of the car in Honda’s “strong passion to reach a wider customer base”. “We would like to expand the joy of owning vehicles to more and more customers by introducing an affordable small vehicle,” he said. “To accomplish this we have focused on creating an attractive package at an affordable price.” Here’s how they’re priced in South Africa: Honda Brio 1.2 i-VTEC Comfort – R119 800 and Honda Brio 1.2 i-VTEC Comfort a/t – R129 800. This includes a two-year or 30 000km service plan and three-year or 100 000km warranty with service intervals of 15 000km. Which keeps things simple: one model, one engine, the only alternative a five-speed auto gearbox. The engine is a quad-valve 1.2-litre i-VTEC capable of 65kW at 6000rpm and 109Nm at 4500rpm, plenty of power for a car this size and promising 0-100km/h in 12 seconds. It’s the first time this engine has been seen

in SA and it follows the trend of other automakers to downsize engines while simultaneously improving their power output – not so long ago 65kW from a 1.6 engine was not unusual. Honda claims a general-use fuel consumption of 5.6litres/100km (6.3 for the auto – the five-speed gearbox another first for SA). The Brio is assembled in Greater Noida, India, and the first model to reach SA from the Honda plant there. When the first consignment was loaded in Mumbai in October, Honda India’s president Hironori Kanayama said: “The export of Brios to the highly-sophisticated South African market underscores the world-class quality of the cars we produce.” However, keeping prices down for “devel-

oping markets” requires efficiency and simplicity. Hence, Honda says, “the Brio’s interior design takes this concept to a new level by dispensing with everything unnecessary”. “For example, the instrument panel was developed from an extremely simple structure with functional parts grouped and other surfaces reduced to a minimum,” the automaker says. “This also creates a feeling of spaciousness for the front occupants. Minimising of the door interiors and the slender lower part of the instrument panel creates more physical space for knees and feet.” Keeping the upright sections of the front seats slim created space for rear passengers. After all, this IS a small car – 3.61m, 1.5m high and 1.68m wide and its turning circle of 4.8m is less than the length of some large cars. It’s

BMW South Africa is recalling about 5000 X5’s as part of a huge world-wide correction for a bolt that could fail and affect the power-assisted steering. “I can confirm that BMW South Africa is affected by the technical campaign,” a BMW spokesman says. “This affects BMW X5 xDrive35d vehicles produced between June 2006 and November 2012, as well as BMW X6 xDrive35d vehicles produced between July 2007 and March 2010. “About 240 000 vehicles are affected worldwide and 5034 in South Africa.” The recall is for a bolt which could break and cause the loss of power-assisted steering which may increase the risk of a crash, but there have been no inci-

dents or injuries involving the problem in North America, Canada or South Africa. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a bolt holding a belt pulley could loosen and break. “If that happens the car can lose power-assisted steering, making it difficult to steer.” Customers in SA are being contacted to have the bolt for the deflection pulley replaced by a more robust version and locking agent. The trouble was discovered in 2011 in Canada. Dealers will replace the bolt and tighten it to the proper specification. They’ll also add a coating to keep the bolt from coming loose. – Wheels24

all a consequence of Honda’s “man maximum, machine minimum” philosophy that, the company says, “puts people are the centre of the design” with the technology built around people. And people have to be protected so Honda has given the Brio a “high-performance” body using what the automaker calls G-Force Control Technology and involves high-tensile steel for crash resistance – but a nose that, should the occasion arise, will be gentle on a collected pedestrian. Active and passive safety technologies include two front air bags, anti-lock brakes with electronic pressure distribution and front pre-tensioning restraint belts. Honda describes the Brio’s spec as “high”, with aircon, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, four speakers for an audio system that comes with auxiliary and USB connections, power front and rear windows with auto down for the driver, power adjustment for the external mirrors, remote control for the central locking system and an immobiliser. Yoshiaki Nakamura, MD of Honda SA, said at this week’s launch: “The Brio is poised to become a trend-setter in the entry-level segment and will allow us to introduce the Honda motoring experience to a wider audience. “The Brio’s combination of styling, affordability, quality and motoring fun will offer young first-time buyers an attractive budget motoring option.” Graham Eagle, sales and marketing director, added: “Taking into account the specification level, modern technology and inherent quality of the Brio, we are delighted to offer this entry-level newcomer. “We’re confident the Brio’s arresting mix of young and funky styling, zippy dynamics, interior space and efficient technology will please and entice buyers seeking affordability, value and style in a contemporary and efficient package.” – Wheels24

RS 6 comes with a R2.5m tag THE third generation RS 6 will be available to order from early 2013 in Europe and will be priced at the equivalent of R2.5m. If that’s too heady for local customers, the best we can do is tell you all about it. The Avant will be powered by a V8 biturbo petrol engine with cylinder-on-demand technology – 0-100kmh in 3.9 seconds, and with a top speed governed at 250km/h that can be increased on demand 300km/h, yet the car can still manage 10 litres/100km. Eight-speed tiptronic transmission, quattro all-wheel-drive with sport differential, standard RS-specific adaptive air suspension with option of steel-sprung suspension incorporating Dynamic Ride Control also form part of the package. The two large twin-scroll turbochargers enable the RS 6 Avant to gather momentum with remarkable intensity. They are mounted together with the intercooler in the V of the cylinder banks. The exhaust side of the cylinder heads is also on the inside, while the intake side is on the outside. This concept allows a compact design and short gas paths with minimal flow losses. The RS-specific engine management and unthrottled intake system also contribute to the eight-cylinder engine’s dramatic response, delivered to the tune of a classic V8 soundtrack. Switchable flaps in the exhaust system will make the sound even fuller at the touch of a button and a sports exhaust system will be an option for greater amplification if required. After catapulting to 100km/h from rest in a best-in-class 3.9 seconds, the RS 6 Avant in its standard form will be capable of continuing to an electronically limited 250km/h top speed where conditions allow. It will be possible to increase this top speed to 280km/h by specifying the optional Dynamic package/ and to go a step further with the Dynamic

plus package, which limits top speed to 300km/h. Despite straying even further into the realm of the supercar, the latest RS 6 Avant manages to register a fuel economy improvement of about 40%, thanks partly to an engine stop/start system and innovative thermal management technology, but primarily to the new engine’s cylinder on demand (COD) system. At low to intermediate loads and engine speeds, it shuts down the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8. The 4.0-litre TFSI then runs as a four-cylinder engine un-

til the driver accelerates. This RS 6 Avant will be the first Audi RS model with adaptive air suspension. The specially tuned set-up lowers the body by 20mm/ and incorporates controlled damping which takes into account road conditions, driving style and the mode chosen in the standard adaptive dynamics system, through which the driver can influence the function of key components in multiple steps. The brakes have also been engineered to take extreme performance in their stride. The four internally vented discs feature a

weight-saving wave-like outer contour. The front discs measure 390mm in diameter and are gripped by six-piston callipers available in black or red. Also available as an option are carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs measuring 420mm in diameter. Their callipers are anthracite grey. The body plays a major role in the handling. It comprises roughly 20% aluminium, and a sizeable proportion of components made from high-strength steel. Through the more intensive use of lightweight materials Audi engineers have been able to reduce the weight of the new Audi RS 6 Avant by about 100 kilograms compared with its predecessor. The elegantly trimmed but highly focused cabin of the new RS 6 Avant is singularly tailored to the driver. The instruments feature black faces, white dials and red needles. The key, the flat-bottomed three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, the illuminated entry sills, the rev counter and the displays for the MMI and the Driver’s Information System (DIS) incorporate RS logos. A new feature in the RS menu of the DIS is the shift light. Green segments are illuminated as revs increase. The bar turns red and begins to blink when revs approach the red line. Displays for the gear selected, boost pressure, oil temperature and a digital speedometer round out the RS 6-specific driver information system. RS sports seats with pronounced bolsters, head restraints and RS 6 logos will be standard. The seats are covered in high-grade, honeycomb-quilted Valcona leather in either black or silver. The seats can also be covered in an optional combination of black Alcantara and leather, and the centre sections feature diamond quilting. The boot holds up to 1680 litres with the standard split rear seat folded. – Wheels24

Vehicle sales are on the rise OVERALL year-on-year new car and commercial vehicle sales rose by 7.3% in November 2012, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa) has reported. Another 3 636 units were sold by the industry, pushing vehicle sales to 53 636 for November 2012 from 49 498 for the same period in 2011. “Total domestic sales for the first 11 months of 2012 remain 9.8% ahead of the corresponding period 2011,” Naamsa added. Export sales registered a substantial increase of 8088 (39.5%). “Despite signs of weakness in the economy,” Naamsa claimed, “the performance of the SA automotive sector continues to be

positive.” Low finance charges, strong replacement demand, a highly competitive trading environment, attractive sales incentives and new models continue to support domestic sales and domestic sales are on track for growth of around 10% over 2011. Negative factors that could influence the new vehicle market over the medium term include a slowing economy, rising inflation and a weak rand. The modest new vehicle price increases experienced through 2010 and 2011, Naamsa said, might not be sustainable. “The outlook for 2013, at this stage, is one of modest growth in vehicle volume terms – probably in the range of six to eight percent.” – Wheels24

IT’S no Joker: Batman’s car is for sale. The original 1966 Batmobile is expected to go under the hammer in January, the Barrett-Jackson auto auction house said recently. The iconic vehicle, which was featured in the Batman TV series as well as the movie adaptation starring Adam West, is capable of a quick 180-degree “bat-turn” – thanks to two rear-mounted parachutes, the auctioneers said. “The 1966 Batmobile by George Barris is one of the most famous Hollywood cars in history and it has become a true icon that has been carried from generation to generation of Batmobiles to follow,” Craig Jackson,

chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson, said in a statement. “This vehicle not only marks the significant Bat logo that sits on the middle of its door, but a time in TV history where they defied the odds of making a car the real star of the show.” The Batmobile, a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car adapted by customiser Barris, has a Batphone, a Bat Eye Switch, Bat Smoke “and many other Bat gadgets”, according to Barrett-Jackson. The auction will take place in Scottsdale, Arizona. Jackson has reportedly said it could fetch millions of dollars. – Wheels 24

New hope blooms at Chrysalis JUANITA WILLIAMS

“I WAS an angry boy before I came to Chrysalis Academy,” says Waney Muller. The 17-year-old is one of 166 graduates who completed the 12 Bravo course. After three months of intense training to become leaders, the young men received their awards. At the ceremony, MEC for Social Development Albert Fritz congratulated them, saying: “There are big plans for these graduates; 99% have been placed in internships and positions. This course transforms youths at risk into community leaders.” Of the 166 so-called rough diamonds who started the course three months ago, 11 hailed from Kwazulu-Natal (KZN). They will return to their communities as trained youth instructors. The good news is that the provincial government of KZN has decided to set up a Youth Academy based on the Chrysalis model, says Lucille Meyer, Chrysalis chief executive officer. Some of the graduates will be employed by the Department of Community Service to patrol and keep the beaches safe, 12 others will stay at Chrysalis to gain practical work experience, nine have been accepted for internships at Places of Safety and about 60 have been accepted by the Northlink FET College to study for the three-year diploma in a Safety and Society Course in January 2013. Fritz praised former graduates who are working in Bonnytoun and with trial-awaiting prisoners. Chrysalis students hail from Delft, Philippi, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Mitchell’s Plain, Macassar and outlying areas. During the threemonth course, these youths-at-risk went through an intense four weeks of courses in welding, electrical circuitry, sports coaching, firefighting, basic cookery and security and office administration.

He received an award for being the most improved person in office skills training. “I loved the survival course – climbing to the top of Table Mountain in the rain, learning to rely on myself.” When he goes back into the community, he wants to “teach youth to respect and love each other and I will join organisations so I can share my knowledge with the community”. Mnqutyana has a passion for computers and office administration. Waney Muller (17) from Mitchell’s Plain says he is a changed man. “I was troubled, un-

disciplined and hanging out with the wrong friends before I came to Chrysalis.’’ A pupil at Mitchell’s Plain Trade and Technical School, he was skipping classes when a teacher suggested he apply for a course. “I had no confidence and didn’t care about my life; I was an angry boy.” He learned how to free the anger with trauma release therapy and in support groups. He also learned a lot in the substance abuse sessions and says he appreciates learning disclipline from “these wonderful people who look after you, provide clothes, shelter and food. We are all from different backgrounds – this course has taught me to have mercy for youth, not to go back to fighting and to move

in the right direction. The instructors do a great job, they teach you to look inside yourself”. Muller was awarded for being the most improved at addressing the class during his training in fire fighting. “I was most surprised when they called out my name for an award. We trained in fire fighting at the Department of Disaster Risk Management and Fire Brigade Services.” He is keen to train to become a sheet metal welder. Bradley Williams (21), of Strand, was referred to Chrysalis by a rehabilitation centre. “I wasn’t fit, so getting up at 4.30 for a run was very tiring. Now I am so fit the instructors have to chase me. I have learned how to lead, solve problems and manage conflict. I have learned to forgive myself and think about the future.” Williams will train as a junior instructor at Chrysalis – and intends to take his new skills back to the community via his church. Mboneli Mnqasela (24) is from a high crime area in Khayelitsha. His life fell apart when the family home burned to the ground and they lost everything. “I dreamed of passing Grade 12 and becoming a social worker, but I lost heart after the fire and was very unhappy.” Karate training gave him hope. He prayed and visualised a better life and applied at Chrysalis. “I got lost walking to the Academy in Tokai, then I saw the baboons and the beauty and knew it was the right place for me.” He wants to continue training as a fire fighter. “ I learned to respect nature during the survival course; it is very peaceful in Tokai and I am grateful to have had the chance to unleash my potential through the training,” he says. “I call myself a leader now and will teach the younger ones at church.”
