Gang violence flares up again TAURIQ HASSEN

G

ANGSTERS in Lavender Hill lashed out again at the weekend, this time claiming three lives and leaving two wounded. On Friday at 14:00, a 35-year-old man was fatally shot by three men in Hillview. Colonel Noel Joseph, commander of Steenberg Police Station, says investigations revealed that the murder was drug-related. No arrests have yet been made in connection with the incident, and Joseph says the details of the deceased cannot be released for fear of jeopardising the investigation. Later that afternoon, at around 16:00, it is alleged that rival gangsters retaliated, and 20-year-old Bradley Solomon was shot dead in Grindal Avenue, Lavender Hill. Police arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with Solomon’s murder, and he is set to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court today (Tuesday). Police on routine patrol in Lavender Hill on the day also seized guns from two teenagers after they heard two shots fired in the vicinity. “There were just shots fired, but nobody was injured,” says Joseph. The officers arrested three 18year-old men after confiscating two unlicensed guns and 26 rounds of ammunition. Heritage Day on Saturday yielded another incident, during which a 23-year-old man was injured. The man was shot in the buttocks

in Depsiton Crescent in Lavender Hill at around 21:00, Joseph says. “Investigations highlighted that the man was a known member of a gang in the area; he’s currently recovering in hospital,” Joseph explains. During the early hours of Sunday morning, meanwhile, police officers on high alert stopped a car in Lavender Hill carrying four men and a girl. Joseph says three of the men were known gang members, and the police followed up by searching the car. Three unlicensed guns were found, and those in the car were arrested on charges of illegal possession of firearms. Then, that night, a known gang leader who lived in Lavender Hill was gunned down in a pool club in Colorado Park, Mitchell’s Plain, at around 23:00. Joseph says three attackers entered the club and fired off several shots. In addition to the fatality, a young man was wounded in the shooting, and is recovering in hospital. “This case is currently being investigated, and we cannot confirm any arrests at this stage,” says Joseph. The station commander says police have noticed “many new faces” on the streets, and they suspect these are involved in gang activity. “Many of these new faces are young boys, and our investigations have revealed that they are being intimidated into joining these gangs – which is a criminal of-

fence.” Under the Intimidation Act, criminal charges can be brought against those who try to coerce youngsters into gangs, but Joseph says parents must be willing to open cases with the police. Kevin Southgate, chairperson of the Steenberg Community Policing Forum, says he is deeply concerned at the “sudden flare-up of gang violence”. “Our concern is for the safety of the community and the possible impact that gang violence could have on learners who are preparing to write their final exams,” he says.

He urges a “sustainable strategy that will ensure that our communities live in a socially acceptable environment that promotes peace, safety and security”. “The current violence proves that gangs are not sincere when endorsing peace initiatives that are not worth the paper they are written on,” says Southgate, referring to a treaty signed by Lavender Hill gangsters, mediated by religious and community leaders, in April this year. The document was signed by leaders of the Junky Funky Kids, the Mongrels and the Corner Boys,

Bush Radio needs your help AFRICA’s oldest community radio station, Bush Radio (89.5fm), has started a pledge drive as a last-ditch effort to avoid closure due to the current economic circumstances. The idea for Bush Radio started in the 1980s, when community activists and alternative media producers came together to explore ways in which grassroots media could be used for social empowerment and an alternative to apartheid media. Noam Chomsky, a renowned American linguist, philosopher and author, once visited the station and had nothing but praise for it. “I would like to tell you how impressed I was with what I saw and heard at Bush Radio,” Chomsky said. “I have had quite a lot of contact with popular media in the United States, and often elsewhere, and have rarely come across achievements comparable to yours. “There is no doubt in my mind that community radio is, in general, one of the most impor-

tant ways to develop a basis for meaningful, functioning democracy.” From campaigning against the apartheid government for a free and independent broadcasting authority, to being present on Cape Town’s Grand Parade when Nelson Mandela addressed the nation as a free man, Bush Radio has been an integral part of the new South Africa. Over the past three years, however, the pioneering radio station and training centre has been hit hard by the economic climate, and it is calling on the public to help it in its time of need. The non-profit organisation is asking everyone to donate R10 or more to help it keep going. The drive started yesterday (Monday) and will run until Monday next week. For more information about the pledge, including bank details for donations, contact Sharon on (021) 448-5450. Alternatively email her at mother@bushradio.co.za or fax details to the radio station on (021) 448-5451.

NO SMOKING: Tokai’s Blue Route Mall emptied out when the centre staged a fire drill at 08:50 last Tuesday. Everybody in the mall was told to leave the centre “very calmly”, and 15 minutes later they were let inside again. The mall decided to carry out the safety test in response to the recent temporary closure of Maynard Mall in Wynberg and Long beach Mall in Sun Valley after the Fire Department established their fire safety systems weren’t up to standard. Children of all ages are welcome to join in the traditional games, and youths 11 years and older are invited to register their teams for the soccer. Lavender Hill’s dumping dilemma LILLIAN AMOS

RESIDENTS of Lavender Hill are again calling on the City of Cape Town to take more effective action against illegal dumping – and the City is in turn calling on residents to help care for their areas. Lavender Hill community worker Clive Jacobs says the area has “always” had problems with dumping, but he says residents are enraged by the time it takes the City of Cape Town to clean up. “It is disgraceful. Lavender Hill looks filthy, and council takes so long to come and clean up. We have rats running around, flies in our houses, and smells that make us sick to the stomach. It’s a major health concern.” Jacobs suggests that the City could put the offending sites to better use by planting trees or transforming them into play areas. At one dumping site, just off Military Road, People’s Post found heaps of rubble and refuse made up of old shoes, nappies, worn tyres and old broken furniture At another site, an open field in Stienie Road, the rubbish had been removed, but upset residents say it took council too long to

see to the matter. Speaking to the paper as she stands cooking in her kitchen, Gabieba Ismail, who lives opposite the field, says she is disappointed with the City. “It was disgraceful – the other day was Eid, and we had to deal with flies and the smells of the dumping site. It’s not nice to have your family over for such a joyous occasion and be faced with these things. It’s embarrassing. “They only collected the rubble after Eid. Give it a couple of weeks and then this place will look exactly the same, and we’ll be back to having to deal with the smells.” Ward councillor Shaun August says he is negotiating to have the contractor responsible for cleaning up after illegal dumpers visit the affected areas more frequently. “I’ve had a meeting with them, and hopefully they will be able to come more often. “I also want to make it a point that the community has to play a role in keeping the streets clean. We can collect the rubble over and over again, but community members need to take responsibility by reporting when they see other people dumping.” August says the City has various initiatives to educate residents about littering and illegal dumping. Earlier this month, the City’s Solid Waste Management Department hosted a series of litter cleanup drives as part of its WasteWise programme for National Cleanup Week. Students in Retreat, Mitchell’s Plain and Bishop Lavis were drawn in to help clean up their

areas and participate in a waste awareness session. WasteWise is a public education and awareness programme dedicated to the prevention of littering, the minimisation of waste, and an increase in recycling efforts. August says the City’s Law Enforcement officers watch over the problem of illegal dumping. Under the existing bylaw, offenders can be

School holiday programmes LILLIAN AMOS

IT’s a common sight: children playing and running in the streets of Lavender Hill. During the school holidays it’s even worse, because many parents leave their children unattended, or with older siblings, while they go to work. This is where organisations like Philisa Abafazi Bethu and New World Foundation (NWF) come in – they try to keep children occupied and off the streets. Lucinda Evans, director and

founder of Philisa Abafazi Bethu, says many parents neglect their children during school holidays, making them easy targets for those with ill intent. “It’s a common sight here in Lavender Hill. I’ve seen many cases where children aged 10 or 11 have to look after their younger siblings. This is dangerous, because children are easy targets.” Evans says parents need to realise the dangers their children can be exposed to. “We want to keep them out of mischief as well as keep them safe from potential

THE Mount Zion International promises an “exciting, fun-filled holiday club with a difference” from Monday 3 October to Friday 7 October. The non-profit organisation invites children between the ages of six and 12 years to join the week of fun at the Full Gospel Church hall in Steenberg, opposite the police station.

Be on the book-out THE Help the Rural Child charity bookshop will hold a coffee and craft morning between 10:00 and 14:00 on the first and last Friday of every month, starting on Friday 30 September. Everybody is welcome to “enjoy the jolly atmosphere of a lovely shop, choose books, have some coffee and look through the crafts on display”, organisers say. The bookshop is situated at 254 Main Road, Kirstenhof (opposite Johnson and Johnson and next to the Avalon Vet). For more information call Charles or Heather on (021) 7123070.

gramme. Zain Nazier, youth coordinator at NWF, says, “We know the need in the area, and we try to keep the children occupied as much as possible.” This year, the team at NWF are hosting outreach programmes at various parks throughout Lavender Hill. “With the recent shootings in Lavender Hill, we want to keep our volunteers and the children safe, so we won’t be going to the field at Hillwood Primary.” New World Foundation will hold its holiday activities from 14:00 till 16:30 every weekday next week. A lot of child abuse happens during this time, and we as organisations try to avoid that by giving the children somewhere to come for safety.” The youth leaders at New World Foundation have for years been hosting programmes at Hillwood Primary School during school holidays, catering to more than 130 children every day. The programmes include activities such as sports, arts and crafts, traditional games, drama and music. The children also receive lunch at the end of the day’s pro-

fined anything between R500 and R10 000. The bylaw also makes provision for prison sentences of between six months and two years for certain offenders. PLANS are still in place to introduce a drug counselling centre to Retreat’s Main Road by October next year – indeed, finance was set aside for the facility in the City’s 2011-2012 budget for the area. The public will be invited to comment on the proposal early next year. Ward councillor Jan Burger has confirmed money has been set aside in his budget for the building to be upgraded and prepared for the drug counselling centre. People’s Post last reported on the possible introduction of the centre in June (“Mixed sentiment over drug centre”, 28 June); the proposed location for the drug counselling centre was questioned by surrounding residents. The building on the property first served as a retirement village for the elderly, after which Shawco occupied it. After being turned into a health faculty for UCT, it fell vacant around 15 years ago. In June, councillor Jan Burger explained that around R1 million would be budgeted to upgrade the run-down build-

ing. The upgrade and repair work will focus on the building’s roof, flooring, walls and windows, and the interior will be cleaned up. Minor adjustments will be made to prepare the site to house the counselling centre. “The plans are already in motion, and the building will be addressed with finances made available in this year’s annual budget,” says Burger. Residents were given the opportunity to comment on the motion to transfer the building to the Department of Social Development during the proposal’s initial application phase last year. During the next public participation process, residents will get a chance to object to or comment on the centre’s development. The community’s feelings on the matter will then be assessed, and if everything goes according to plan the City will put the upgrade out to tender. The centre is set to accommodate people from areas like Grassy Park, Lotus River, Steenberg, Retreat, Cafda Village and Sasmeer Estate.

The magic of business A TWO-DAY workshop focusing on sales and financial management for entrepreneurs, small businesses and community-based projects will see representatives of over 90 organisations from all nine provinces visit the Cape Town Lodge today (Tuesday) from 08:00 until 20:00 and 08:00 until 16:00 tomorrow. Entitled “The Legends Magic Series”, the

workshop is to be presented by the Old Mutual Legends business development programme as part of its annual curriculum for the 60 beneficiary organisations they support. For more information mail info@fetola.co.za alternatively, please call (021) 7017466.

Mortal results THE bell has been rung on possibly canning the publication of matric results, which is feared to be contributing to the rising incidence of teen suicides. According to the Education Department, not seeing their names in the papers is tantamount to a death sentence for thousands of matriculants who fail their last school exams. While the publication of matric results are much-anticipated by those confident of a pass, it is dreaded by others. Acknowledgement of hard work and preparation towards success are important, but the value of human life by far outweighs the need to see one’s name in print. Statistics indicate that suicide among children and adolescents in South Africa is increasing, with children as young as 10 years old committing suicide. Along with stress, interpersonal problems and psychological disorders (specifically depression), academic problems count among the “greatest precipitators” for suicide in children and teenagers. Passing matric is for most, the natural culmination of a challenging 12 years of school and the next step towards a chosen career and bright future – that is, if all the correct mechanisms are in place. For an impoverished township child, who has to study by candlelight in waterlogged shacks, school days are fraught with survival challenges. It cannot be assumed that the thousands who fail matric choose to do so. Analysing the exact reasons is complex and best left to the experts, but suffice to say there can be no greater pain for an emotionally vulnerable youth than that of watching your peers scan the newspapers, see their names and then leap into the air, screaming with elation. The media go to town publishing stories and taking photos of the top matrics, while, somewhere out of focus, are the ones who didn’t make it, doomed possibly never to make it.

Your SMSes Watch out on the N1! THIS incident occurred on Friday 9 September. The woman, though not from the area, has been interviewed at Kirstenhof Police Station under instruction of Geoff Fox, chairperson of Kirstenhof Community Policing Forum, and her story is confirmed as factual. On Friday at about midday I was driving on the N1 in the direction of Paarl. Around about the kennels just before the Winelands One-Stop, I saw three youths with a dog in a sack, and they were trying to hang it in a tree. Without thinking I stopped and jumped out of my car. Thereafter it is a blur, but from what I can make out they flung the dog at me and I caught it, so now my hands were full. They then put a sack over my head, which had thorns in it, and during this I received a very severe boot to my back around my kidney area. This I do not remember, but the doctors have told me it is what must have happened. They forced me into the back of my car, where I was kicking and screaming. One was holding the sack over my head, and by so doing pushing the thorns into my face and head. The other was either trying to evade my legs or hold my legs. My car is an automatic and has a thumb push-start – there is no key at all. To start it you have to go through a correct sequence of events. I had left it in drive when I jumped out so I would say they could not work out how to start it or what to do. In addition, if you do something wrong, the car shouts. This must have frightened the youths, and they jumped out and I assume ran. By the time I got the sack off my head they were nowhere in sight. My injuries are superficial.

I had in excess of 20 thorns stuck around my face and head, which they removed at the hospital. One was very close to my eye, and, I would say had I not been wearing dark glasses could have gone into my eye. They had hit me in the mouth and that is badly bruised. Today I had to have an MRI as they were concerned that my one kidney could be torn or possibly even ruptured, as I had severe bleeding. All very minor when I consider what possibly the intent was. What is interesting regarding the kidney is the doctor said whoever kicked me could have had training of some sort, as the kidney is protected and the kick severe enough to debilitate me and rupture a membrane – the guy knew what he was doing. When I spoke to the police I had zero to go on. They advised that it was probably a setup, as if they really wanted to hang the dog it would not have been so close to the road. The officer said these youths know that more than likely a woman would stop, and then she is an easy target. They probably wanted to hijack the car and take anything they could get their hands on. I was fortunate in that my car is sophisticated – others may not be. I cannot even contemplate what would have happened if I was maybe someone frailer or if they had managed to start the car. The police have advised that the best thing to do is ask people to be aware, using that stretch of the road. They have said put it on community forums to get the word out. Please pass this on and use whatever means you need to stop this happening to other people. ANONYMOUS

. The Adams family of Heathfield thanks all for the support, condolences and love in our time of bereavement on the passing of Jimmy (James). God bless! Just a thought . Why must neighbours litter in front of others’ houses? Are we not suppose to be a cleaner and healthier city? . We all make mistakes. We buy what we don’t need or can’t use! Does anyone know how to get rid of ACI or similar holiday club points? . I thank all of you for responding to my query about Nakhlistan, even the negative attacks. I am much better informed than I previously was. Thanks. Now is there a physical address where I can send some of the poor people that come to my door asking for food when I am unable to help them? I’ll still do my bit to help. Damocles . How can neighbours be so inconsiderate by parking all their vehicles in the road? They have garages full of junk so everyone else must suffer because there is no parking for visitors. . To the driver of the white bakkie with green wing mirror covers on the M3 on 19 September: You should be embarrassed at how badly you drive! The holiness of Ramadaan . I really don’t know what you are trying to prove. The holy month of Ramadaan is meant only for our Muslims, not for any other faith that I know of. The month is holy to Muslims. Your lack of thinking is a direct reflection of your stupidity. . Why is James Rawlings so petty? The holy month of Ramadaan is the correct way to say it. Other faiths follow the traditional

January, February, etcetera calendar, and Muslims follow a lunar calendar in which Ramadaan is the holy month. Why should it be referred to as a month holy to Muslims when other faiths don’t even consider it a month? Grow up and worry about real issues. . Some people do not understand the importance of “peace on earth”. Be the change in your own community. Don’t be like Julius Malema, Damocles and James Rawlings. Naz . Why are people so petty? Let the Muslims enjoy their holy month. The Hindus are in the holy month till 18 October and the Christians have Lent and Christmas. Do good, be good and see good. Hitting the woof . Stop nagging about dog barking! Dogs bark to protect property and owners. I caught a few people teasing dogs, so how can they shut up? If you are teased or angry, what do you do? Use common sense! . A lonely dog barks as a lonely man speaks to himself to assure themselves that they exist. Doggone shame. . To the person who wants to complain about dogs off leash in park areas: It is most likely that you have not put in the effort to properly socialising your dogs and that is the reason they are on leads and have problems with other dogs. Dogs are by nature extremely social animals who enjoy interacting with other dogs. It is very unfair that other dogs should lose out on being able to run free because of your own ignorance and laziness. Put in the work needed!

CAFDA soldiers despite battle for funding LILLIAN AMOS

THE Cape Flats Development Association (CAFDA) has appointed a new fundraiser as part of an action plan to ensure its sustainability. CAFDA – a well established non-governmental organisation (NGO) focusing on social development on the greater peninsula for 67 years – presented its annual report for the financial year, ending on 31 March, to stakeholders at its annual general meeting in Grassy Park on Wednesday. Like many other NGOs, CAFDA is feeling the financial pinch brought about by the gloomy economic climate. The organisation’s financial report for 2010-2011 shows a deficit of just over half a million rand. General manager Jo-Anne Wilson has thanked all of the donors who made contributions to the organisation, and says that, while the last financial year was tough on CAFDA, members still tried to deliver the best possible service to the community. But, she says, they have had to make quite a few sacrifices. “We are still trying to give that quality service. However, we haven’t given our staff an increase this year, which is a problem, because inflation has gone up, and we just cannot give them an increase at this stage. But we are looking at that also in the future.” CAFDA does receive some government assistance in the form of payment for social workers but Wilson says it’s not nearly enough as the the problems – like drug abuse – the association deals with are on-

ly worsening. “Government is underpaying our social workers. That is why there is such a high turnover of staff.” The organisation relies on its fundraising and retail elements to finance the rest of its operating costs. Wilson says salaries and security account for the biggest portion of CAFDA’s operating costs. “The break-ins, the crime ... It’s terrible. If you look at the expenses, where does the most money go? Most of the money goes into security – salaries and security. “We pay such a lot for security, but we still don’t get satisfied.” The organisation explores numerous avenues for funding, but Wilson says many businesses are only donating money to very specific causes at the moment such as Early Childhood Developement. Two applications for funding are pending with the National Lotteries Board, and Wilson says the association is also looking beyond the country’s borders. “We’ve gone to the international market, we’ve sent out proposals, we’ve tapped into contacts for survival this year. Organisations like this – 67 years old – will close down in the end if we dont get support.” Wilson says, apart from the continuous struggle for funding, CAFDA’s other big focus is on keeping staff motivated amid all the challenges. “The HR sub-committe is working on a plan, in terms of mentorship, wellness and just keeping our staff happy in other ways like giving them a half a day off in the month . We’re looking at terms and conditions of employment, at what the impact is going to be, but we are proactive where that is concerned, definitely.”

CARTOON CRAZY: Spend a morning with the creators of the wellknown comic strips Mama Taxi and Trek Net, Dave Gomersall (left) and Gavin Thompson, as they share moments from a day in the life of a cartoonist at the SA Jewish Museum, 88 Hatfield Street, Gardens, on Sunday 9 October from 10:00 till 13:00. Find out how they got started, how they work, and how they got published. “If you want to see your cartoon in print you have to learn the tricks of the trade – how to produce, research, market and distribute,” a spokesperson says. Afterwards, enjoy a guided walkabout of the Zapiro exhibition, then it’s back to the drawing board, when you’ll get to create your own cartoon. The workshop is open for children aged 12 to 17, and costs R70. For more info phone (021) 4651546 or email bonnie@sajm.info.

Concert cancellation ‘great disappointment’ THE District Six Heritage Day Concert planned to be held at the Good Hope Centre this past Saturday was cancelled, and organiser Jayson King says he is deeply disappointed at having to do so. “I was caught between a rock and a hard place,” says King. “The economy has not made it easy – ticket sales were not proving to be as big

as we’d hoped – so I’m afraid I had to make the very hard and painful decision.” King says he had already lost a substantial amount of money to the project, and he wasn’t going to “be a hero and carry on in the hope of selling more tickets”. “It is a great disappointment for the cast and I, as we were looking forward to per-

forming – and more especially to have celebrated the heritage of District Six.” King apologises to both the media and the ticket holders for the “terrible inconvenience”. Everybody who bought tickets is urged to take them back for a refund. For more information contact King on (021) 633-4299 or 071 909 2025.

Clean team takes out the trash OVER 400 volunteers joined a major litter blitz t the Zandvlei Nature Reserve a week ago as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day, leaving the vlei a sparkling testament to nature before litter. John Kieser of International Coastal Cleanup Day joined the Zandvlei Trust and invited a host of other organisations to crack down on the rubbish at the vlei and its surrounds. Two Oceans Aquarium, together with EnviroServe, brought over 200 volunteers, while 120 naval cadets, under the watchful eye of Commandant Philip Miller, arrived “on the double” – and in military style and saw to it that Muizenberg Beach, from Surfer’s Corner to the mouth of the estuary, was left spotless.

The cleanup squad then moved to Bokmakierie Park, next to Zandvlei, and repeated the exercise. Meanwhile, Sappi staff manned a table to hand out the tools of the anti-litter trade (and a few peaked caps to keep off the sun). Garden Court Hotel from the city centre arrived with its own host of volunteers, and more came from as far afield as Strandfontein and Belhar. One person brought a handful of children from a nearby orphanage and helped clear some rubble dumped under Thesen’s Footbridge. Towards the middle of the morning, a 4x4 with a winch set out to remove two dangerous metal stakes protruding from the sand at the water’s edge, as well as a cable reel and an old tyre from the vlei. About 300 bags were filled with litter by the end of the day.

World Cup watch – and a few more rules the bears 53-17, while on Wednesday Tonga beat Japan 31-18. On Friday, Australia annihilated the United States with a score of 67-5, and on Saturday England handed out a similar beating to Romania at 67-3. In last week’s rugby lesson, we focused on knock-ons, offsides, and forward passes. This week, People’s Post will clarify the mysterious differences between penalty kicks and free kicks, and explain the 22m dropout. Penalty kick This is awarded after a serious infringement. Offenders are required to retreat 10m while the opposing team is given the opportunity to restart play unopposed. Teams will often kick the ball upfield and out of bounds to gain a field advantage. When they do this, play is restarted as a lineout at the point where the ball went out of bounds.

LYNN PRINS

T

HE World Champs displayed superb rugby yet again on Thursday, when they slaughtered neighbouring country Namibia with a victorious 87-0. Thus far the Springboks have set the highest score, with no points conceded against them. The match at full time had 12 tries, 12 conversions and one penalty goal. On Saturday, New Zealand took on France, with many Springbok supporters routing for the French and hoping for an upset. To their dismay, New Zealand fought back after what had seemed a struggle for the Kiwis in the first 10 minutes. New Zealand at full time had a score 37-17. Last Tuesday, Italy played Russia, beating

If in range, the team with the penalty may attempt a kick at the posts, worth three points. Finally, they may simply tap the ball with a foot and run with it. Free kick This is given for minor infringements, such as a foot up in the scrum. A free kick is just like a penalty kick, except it cannot be taken directly at goal, and if it goes to touch, the other team is awarded the ball for the lineout. 22m dropout After an unsuccessful penalty kick, play is usually restarted by a drop kick (executed by allowing the ball to hit the ground before kicking it) on the part of the penalty-attempting team from the 22m line. • On Friday, SA takes on Samoa at 09:30. Next week People’s Post will focus on a rugby mark and hand-offs.

‘Blatjang’ leaves indelible mark LYNN PRINS

P

EOPLE often forget sporting heroes once they “hang up their boots”, but Faiek Hendricks, fondly known as “Blatjang”, is a rugby legend to remember. One can only wonder how this big man, who played as a prop and lock, got a nickname like “Blatjang”, but he eagerly explains the name came from his high school days. “I must have been mistaken for a guy who sold blatjang in Hanover Street,” he says, remembering how his schoolmates teased him with the name. “I made the mistake of chasing them, and ever since I was stuck with it.” Blatjang grew up in District Six, and was born in Plymouth Road opposite George Golding Primary School, before moving to Aspeling Street, where he developed his love for the game of rugby. “I lived for rugby, since soccer was not my favourite, nor was I interested in cricket. My love for the game developed on the street – coming

out of the bioscope and playing a game of rugby with friends was the routine.’ In the late ’60s, at the age of nine, he started playing for Silvertree Youth Club, and continued as a senior, captaining Silvertree’s firstside team up until the late ’80s. From there he “club-hopped” – or, as he says, he helped out teams by playing for them for a season. He calls himself a “bad loser”, which goes some way to explaining his drive for victory in captaining teams like Watsonia, Violets, Hamiltons, Schotschekloof Walmers, Youngstars and Caledonian Roses, to name a few. Speaking about his provincial career takes him back to 1978 – also the year of his knee injuries, though he evidently didn’t allow these to stop his career early. In 1984, Blatjang’s career was at its peak; he represented the SA invitational team, and three years later he made his debut as a South African Rugby Union player against Kimberley’s invitational team. It was only in the ’90s, though,

when he got to further his international career. In 1995, the year SA hosted and won its first World Cup after the apartheid was defeated, he represented the team of SA veterans, also known as the Classic Springboks, when they played against the World Classics in Bermuda, North America. Two years later he was in Japan, playing for the veterans in the Sannix Championships. He followed this up by representing the SA parliamentary team in London, England, playing against British parliamentary teams in the House of Commons and Laws. It was in 1998 when the World Golden Oldies started in Cape Town, and every second year they toured overseas. Silverferns Rugby Club, a club for former provincial players and club players, was established in that year for Golden Oldies. Asked about his former teammates, Blatjang’s tone glows as he speaks of veteran players like Salie Fredericks and Casiem Jabaar. “In the veteran team I played alongside Karel du Plessis – ‘Prince of Wings’

LEGEND: Faiek “Blatjang” Hendricks is seen with a photo of the SA veterans team that toured to Bermuda in 1995; it included the late Yagyah Sakier, Divan Serfonteing and Chris Burger. was his name – Divan Serfontein, Janie Breedt, Danie Gerber, Rob Louw and so many others. I’ve even played against the top dogs such as Andy Hayden and Jock Ross of New Zealand.” These days, Blatjang works with SA Rugby Legends, hosting coaching clinics and organising school tournaments. He’s also

involved with the coaching of UWC’s women’s rugby league. Blatjang sees Springbok captain John Smith as a great leader, with his two favourite players being Gio Aplon and Juan de Jong. Blatjang strongly believes that the Springboks will be crowned world champs again.
