HE Retreat Swimming Pool will switch on its newly installed water heaters in three weeks – much to the joy of swimmers who make regular use of the facility. Installing the new heaters has substantial spin-offs for the development of swimmers from the Retreat Aquatics Club, whose members (drawn from around 90 families living among the greater Retreat area, Grassy Park, Ottery, Southfield and Wynberg) use the City-owned pool to train. Members’ lives were made tremendously difficult when criminals brutally vandalised the pool’s last set of heaters, which were installed around two years ago. The club was forced to utilise the Blue Downs Indoor Swimming Pool, which club chairperson Ebrahim Cassiem says was “inconvenient for the swimmers”. Indeed, many swimmers, disheartened at having to train in harsh winter weather, started to lose interest in their sport. But all this is set to change with the new heaters. “This is a huge moment for all our swimmers, because now they can go on to train in proper swimming conditions,” says a delighted Cassiem, who mentions that the club’s management now plans to host training programmes throughout the year. Vandals will find it a lot harder to break the equipment now, too. Byron Kemp, the City’s area manager for Sports, Recreation and Amenities, says the contractor who put the heaters in also secured their ventilation gaps to prevent unauthorised access. “We also insured the pumps upon installation,” says Kemp. Ward councillor Jan Burger en-

SOLID: The new heaters have been placed in secure housing. thuses about the benefits the heaters will bring for swimmers. “You won’t believe how much talent there is out there – I am really excited to see what comes of this, because these swimmers really work hard and deserve these heaters.” The good news doesn’t stop there – more improvements are on the horizon for the pool. Cassiem explains that the club applied to the Lotto Board of South Africa for funding to upgrade the 36-year-old facility in 2002. The resulting money was used on water heaters, new ablution facilities and a new surface for the pool’s deck. The club will now apply for funding to have the pool covered. “We are meeting with council, and we have applied for funding,” says Cassiem, who spoke of the benefits of covering the pool earlier this year (“New bid to cover Retreat pool”, People’s Post, 22 February). Either way, Cassiem says the swimming club has plans to expand on its current swimming programme thanks to the new heaters, which will be switched on during a ceremony next month.

Find the skills for landing your dream job MANY South Africans have the skills required to start their own businesses, but a lack of information often prevents people from realising their dreams. To create jobs requires a concerted effort by individuals and business leaders, and 93 000 Jobs for Mandela Day, headed by Proudly South African (PSA), aims to inspire everybody to create jobs for a sustainable future. In addition to this, the campaign aims to create a platform for people to access information on topics related to job creation. The problem South Africa has a very high rate of unemployment; a large proportion of out-of-school youths and adults are not working. Those in low-income households often support many dependants and earn little relative to the cost of living. This is a central contributor to widespread poverty, PSA says. In addition to this, South Africa’s unemployment rate has increased from 24% to 25% , due mainly to the global economic downturn. The power of skills One of the challenges faced when considering job creation is the availability of skilled individuals – an alarming number of people in South Africa lack the skills required for gainful employment and excellence.

In 2000, the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) were established as part of the National Skills Development Act with the aim of developing the skills of the South African work force and so improve workers’ quality of life and productivity, to promote self-employment, and to improve the delivery of social services. SETAs To ensure that the SETAs are specific and focused, 25 SETAs were established – each with its own clearly defined sector and sub-sectors. The SETAs are concerned with learnerships, internships, unit-based skills programmes, and apprenticeships. Furthermore, the SETAs also aim to increase levels of investment in education, encourage employers to be active in the learning process in the workplace, and assist work-seekers to find employment. Proudly South African and the SETAs have one broad focus in common: to build a sustainable South Africa through job creation. To follow is a list of the 25 SETAs and their domains. • FASSET: finance, accounting, management consulting and other financial services. • BANKSETA: banking and related services. • CHIETA: chemical industries and related services.

• CTFL: clothing, textile, footwear and leather industries. • CETA: construction industries • DIDTETA: diplomatic, intelligence, defence and trade. • ETDPSETA: education, training and development practices. • ESETA: energy sector. • FOODVEB: food and beverage manufacturing. • FIETA: forest industries. • HWSETA: health and welfare sector. • ISETT: information systems, electronics and telecommunication technologies. • INSETA: insurance sector. • LGWSETA: local government and water services. • MAPPP: media, advertising, publishing, printing and packaging industries. • MQA: mining and mineral industries. • MERSETA: manufacturing, engineering and related services. • POSLEC: policing, security, legal and correctional services. • PAETA: primary agricultural sector. • PSETA: public service sector. • SETASA: secondary agricultural sector. • SERVICES: services sector. • THETA: tourism, hospitality and sport industries. • TETA: transport sector. • W&RSETA: wholesale and retail industries.

THE Table Mountain National Park’s Junior Rangers spent the weekend of 12 to 14 August at the Sunbird Centre, Silvermine, in honour of the Western Leopard Toad breeding migrations that usually reach their peak during August. The youths participated in frog and toad identification training sessions presented by Ranger Sergeant Marisa de Kock from the Redhill section, and Alison Faraday from ToadNuts gave an update on the status of the breeding migration of the Western Leopard Toad. The group walked from the Sunbird Centre to Clovelly Golf Course on the Saturday night to assist the Toad-Nuts

in surveying the ponds on the golf course for toads. “They were treated to a chorus of what sounded like hundreds of Western Leopards Toad males calling to attract the females to the ponds,” a spokesperson says. “The Rangers were so moved by witnessing part of this migration that they have offered assistance to the golf course manager with ideas to best conserve these toads and maintain the success of this breeding site.” The Junior Rangers also surveyed other possible breeding ponds in the Silvermine section of the Table Mountain National Park, and visited the beautiful Silvermine waterfall.

Watch out for fake detective

Fire ravages four homes TWENTY-FOUR people were left destitute on Tuesday evening last week after a fire destroyed their Parkwood homes. Four dwellings were gutted – three shacks and a Wendy house – and it is still not clear how the fire started. A family of eight (six of whom are children ranging from infancy to 17 years) were among those affected by the devastating fire in Abdullah Moosa Walk Circle. Mother Fatiema Jackson says she was at a friend’s house with her sister, trying to get shoes for her children for Eid, when the fire broke out. “When we were walking back, I saw smoke coming from where my house stood. I told my sister it looked like my place. When I got there, it was indeed my home.” The traumatised mother, thinking her children were still in the house, says she fainted in shock. Fatiema’s husband, Salieg, says he was sleeping when he heard children screaming in the shack next door. He rushed his own children out of their shack and kicked down the door of the adjacent dwelling, in which Gadiejah Felix and her family members lived. Two of Felix’s grandchildren – aged one and three years old – were in the shack, but Salieg was in time to

save them from the flames. “I was very concerned about the children,” the father says. “I have children of my own, and I wouldn’t want to lose my children in such a way. I went in and got the kids. It was just instinct; I didn’t care about myself.” Felix was at a nearby shop when the fire broke out. “I just ran over to the shop – I thought I was going to be quick. Then someone came and told me my place was burning. I ran back because I was worried about my grandchildren. Luckily, Salieg got the children out in time.” The grandmother cannot understand how the fire started. “I don’t know,” she says. “I really don’t know. All I can say is that I feel so guilty that all these people are now homeless. I feel like I’m responsible for what happened.” Estelle Soules, an unemployed woman who lived in one of the destroyed shacks, says she was watching TV when her nine-year-old granddaughter warned her of the fire. Soules, who lost her sense of smell in an accident, hadn’t noticed the smoke. “I had no idea my place was burning. By the time I did, I grabbed my grandchildren and ran. “I don’t know what to do now,” she says. “We’ve lost everything. We just have the clothes on our back.” Theo Layne, commander of

A WOMAN was robbed by a man pretending to be a police detective in Lavender Hill last week. The elderly woman was taken advantage of after she drew her pension at 10:30 last Tuesday. “After drawing her pension, en route to her home, she became aware of a man following her,” says Warrant Officer Hermanus Van Dyk, spokesperson for the Steenberg police. “He tried to start a conversation with her, but she did not pay much attention to him.” The young man then put “something heavy” against the woman’s right side and told her to keep walking and act normally. A white Ford Sierra then stopped nearby. A well-dressed man got out is said to have introduced himself as a detective. Van Dyk says the man allegedly even showed a fake appointment certificate. The false policeman told the woman he was investigating the man with her on a charge of theft. “The victim explained that she did not know the suspect, and that she was returning from collecting her pension money at the AllPay point,” Van Dyk says. The so-called detective then asked the pensioner for proof, and she handed over an envelope containing her pension payout and slip. The con man feigned satisfaction, and handed the envelope back. Later, when the elderly woman tried to do some essential shopping, she discovered the fake detective had switched her envelope for another. A case of robbery with a firearm has been opened at Steenberg Police Station. “The case is under investigation, and no suspects have been arrested,” Van Dyk says. If you know anything that could shed light on this case, please call Detective Constable Mluleki Dibela on 078 496 3242.

Goodwood Fire Station, says firefighters responded to the fire at 20:13. It took around an hour to extinguish it. “There were no major injuries, and a formal investigation has been launched.” The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. When People’s Post visited the scene a day after the incident, families were still trying to get to grips with what had happened. Community members had gathered to clear the rubble and salvage whatever they

could. Charred stove shells and burnt toys lay where homes once stood. Disaster Risk Management has given the distraught residents some necessities, like food and blankets. The families, now stuck with the task of rebuilding, implore anyone who is able to help them with food, blankets, clothing, building equipment or any other items to call ward councillor Melanie Arendse on (021) 7044310 or 072 804 4895.

CHOOLS have until 19 September to secure a place in this year’s Boomerang EduKite Schools’ Competition, part of the 17th Cape Town International Kite Festival happening on 22 and 23 October and proudly hosted by Cape Mental Health in association with Heart 104.9FM. The Boomerang Edu-Kite Schools’ Competition, made possible thanks to the support of the Boomerang children’s TV channel, is open to Western Cape primary schools and schools for learners with special educational needs. Each school that enters will be supplied with a free set of blank kite skins to decorate with their interpretation of this year’s theme, “One Sky, One World – Mental Health for All”. On Saturday 22 October the schools will take their decorated kites to the festival for judging, followed by an inspirational mass fly. The three winning schools in each of the two categories will receive cash prizes totalling R12 000. There is no cost to participate. “Boomerang is proud to be part of this wonderful initiative that sees learners of all abilities creating and having fun together,” says Alan Musa, VP and GM of Pan Middle East and Africa for Turner Broadcasting Systems. “This year’s theme is one that we firmly believe in as it celebrates acceptance, creativity, unity and understanding – key model attributes for us all to strive to-

Keep a watch on water LOWER RAINFALL this winter has left six of our region’s major dams at a combined average level of 81% – around 10% lower than last year. The City of Cape Town urges people to be as careful as possible with the water they use. “We can only save water while we have it, and there is no better time to start than now,” says the councillor Shehaam Sims, Mayoral Committee member for Utility Services. “Consumers have a right to access good quality drinking water, but with this comes a responsibility to preserve the excellent-quality water the city provides.” Being aware of the amount of water you use is often the first step to saving it. Find your water meter and keep a regular eye on it to get an idea of how much of the precious substance you go through. In homes, most water is used in the garden, in flushing the toilet, and bathing and showering. A number of things can be done to mini-

Plato warns against drugs DAN PLATO, MEC for Community Safety, continued his self-imposed mission to engage with as many community policing forums (CPFs) as possible last Wednesday. Plato reiterated his intentions on the night when he said he wanted to speak to as many people as possible on ground level about serious crime. This time, Plato addressed the handful of people who turned up at the Kirstenhof CPF meeting. Much like at the Hout Bay CPF meeting two weeks ago (“Plato listens as Hout Bay vents”, People’s Post, 9 August), his focus fell mainly on the growing drug problem in the Western Cape. He made a grim assessment when he recounted a recent experience near Langebaan. “I was invited to deliver a speech there a couple of weeks ago, but a few people called me over to another conference room to inspect what was happening over there. When I looked through the door I saw all the big drug lords and dealers sitting there, consulting with their legal representatives. They were having their own workshop on how to circumvent the legal system! “It was a shocker. They were strategising! We need to deal with drug abuse in a different manner. We touch the runners, but not the high-flyers. We know that big businessmen and other top, top people are involved with drug dealing, and we must get to them by doing some proper investigation.” He went on to insist that the government

had made an error when it closed down specialised crime-fighting units like the South African Narcotics Bureau. “Both me and premier Helen Zille are of the opinion that drug activities are becoming one of our biggest problems in Cape Town,” he continued, before adding that R6,5 billion in drugs were confiscated in the province in the last financial year alone, which he described as the “tip of the iceberg”. “Where is the rest of the iceberg? It is floating in our communities. If we don’t start a massive fight against drug abuse, it will scupper us all. The fact that drug dealers are not even worried about selling drugs to our children leaves a lot to be desired.” He connected the drug problem with gangsterism when he said, “The dramatic, brutal killings as a result of gang violence in the Cape Flats are down to the fact that there is money in drugs. Some kill others execution style and then drive around in their BMWs and Mercedes.” A vicious cycle is playing out, Plato said, because young children idolise these gangsters and then copy them later in life. “If we want a stable society, we need to act as role models. Our kids must say, ‘I’m looking up to that leader, and one day I want to be like him.’” On another note, Plato emphasised the importance of CPFs and neighbourhood watches, and thanked all those who were present that evening. “We can’t fight crime alone. We need you. If each of us becomes security conscious and looks after our own street, then the rate of crime will drop,” he concluded.

mise water wastage. For one, less water is lost to evaporation if you water your garden before 10:00 or after 16:00, and are careful not to hose down hard or paved surfaces. An automatic shut-off device can help keep water usage down if you forget your sprinkler – and remember that you don’t need to run your sprinkler on rainy days. Leaks should be sought out and repaired as soon as possible, and water-saving devices should be installed wherever possible. When washing your car, use a bucket, and keep taps closed when not in use. In business and industry, it is important to monitor water use, and to design a plumbing system to maximise saving. Business processes should be fine-tuned to use no more than the optimal amount of water – which can help save money, too. For more information on saving water, visit www.capetown.gov.za/water and click on the “Demand Management” tab. Posters and quick reference cards are also available from all city libraries.

Traders count their losses after strike HANRIE BOSCH

LUCKY BREAK: Cherry Ali feels lucky that his Adderley Street stall escaped much of the brunt of the mob. “They passed here, and a man took one packet of chips. I told them to just take it and go and leave me alone. Every body says I am lucky, as other people had al most everything stolen.” HELPLESS: Victor Sitcheu watched in horror as the strikers stole his goods. “I lost R800 in stock and two days of busi ness due to strikers. They stole the entire back of my stall, filled with caps, watches and wallets. When the first man came and stole stuff we told him to go away, but soon more and more came, and we could not do any thing.”

ed by disgruntled municipal workers as the traders did their best to retain what they could of their only means of income. The last day of the strike saw more than 4 894 city staff, or 19% of the city’s workforce, absent from work without authorisation. The violence and destruction were strongly condemned by mayor Patricia de Lille in a

press statement released last Tuesday. “This administration respects the right of workers to strike as a fundamental labour right in our democracy. We do not respect the exploitation of those rights to cause damage and threaten others,” she said. On the third day of the strike, the City of Cape Town announced it had filed an inter-

PRECIOUS STOCK: Trader Baron Olyn is still in shock af ter the looting. “This is very sad for me to see. I can’t believe it. We [three stalls in the area] protected our stuff and just threw covers over everything, so they could not steal our products. People have been too scared to come in to town, and I have made a quarter of what I normally make.”Photos: Hanrie

BUSINESS SLUMP: Flower seller Glenda Bowman says the strikers have caused a serious drop in business. “We’ve had very few sales in the past three days during the strikes. Custom ers could not get here. They even broke the window of one of our cars. Now we just hope busi ness picks up.”

PROFIT LOSS: Louvo Neqelo says her profit has gone down the drain. “They stole more than R1 500 of my stock. There was nothing I could do. If I had tried to stop them, they would have been violent, and it’s better to lose some prod ucts than my life.”

CARING COMPANION: Horses can offer affection and a sense of understanding without being threatening in any way.

The healing power of horses HANRIE BOSCH

A

GROUP of caring people in the city have turned to a novel source of love and understanding to help street children and abused youths. The Montrose Equine youth development programme gives these troubled children a new perspective by introducing them to a gentle councillor who hardly speaks, but says volumes with her soft silence – and has an endless capacity to give piggy-back rides. Horses – or “therapists with hooves”, as Montrose general manager Stacey Doorly Jones likes to call her four-legged helpers – have a remarkable way of neutralising aggression and anxiety. As Winston Churchill once said, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man,” and no one understands this more than Cindy, a social worker at the Lindelani Place of Safety in Stellenbosch. She has seen a group of boys change before her eyes after only six of 16 sessions in the programme. “The biggest thing that has changed is the respect they show me and others living in the home. They have seen that when you work nicely with a horse, it responds. If you are angry, the horse will run or refuse to move... they are starting to apply the same thinking in their daily lives now.” Jones says horses are adept at mirroring nonverbal communication from humans, which she says makes up 93% of all human communication. Illustrating her point with a memorable example, she says, “A group of girls suffering with eating disorders came in for a session. When we walked into the paddock, a horse started rubbing one girl’s stomach up and down... A different horse went up and did the

same thing. By 45 minutes into the session, this had happened five times. “It turned out that the girl had had an abortion recently, and the horses sensed pain and anguish in that area of her body.” Jones was even more astounded at what happened next. “The horses almost made a circle around her, isolating her from the rest of the group. She just stood there, crying, and got it all out, but she did not once want to talk to us about it… it was a powerful release of emotional distress that only the horses could bring out.” Sea Point resident Herman Lategan, who has spent some time at the programme’s home at De Grendel farm, was sceptical to begin with. “I was very cynical at first,” he says. “I though it was just a bunch of nonsense. But, after working on the farm for a while, it all suddenly started making sense. “The first time I went into the paddock with the horses, they could sense my scepticism. They stood with their backs to me and did not want to interact.” It was a turning point. “It is very strange, and I cannot fully explain it. After a while I could see how the kids were growing and developing… the horses do not judge, and they offer a warm, sensitive interaction that most of these children would never have had.” Though the programme started off just last year, it has already helped 87 youths deal with their daily struggles. It isn’t easy, though; the foundation relies solely on funding and donations to do its work, and it costs R3 500 for each child doing an eight-week course. If you can help the foundation with time or donations, please contact Stacey Jones on (021) 801-6725 or visit www.montrosefoundation.co.za.

ABUNDANT HOPE: Numerous people stand in line to receive food from the Abundant Life Feeding Scheme in Lavender Hill. Photo: Lillian Amos

The tantalising taste of tags A SOUP kitchen in Lavender Hill has taken a different approach to feeding the masses. Marlene Saterien, founder of the Abundant Life Feeding Scheme, has been joined by friends and family to feed over 300 children and adults every Monday and Thursday since April 2007. Four months ago, Saterien started asking people from the community to collect 40 bread tags each and bring them to her in exchange for a loaf of bread. Saterien plans send the tags to Mary Honeybun of Noordhoek, who sells them to a recycling company with the aim of buying wheel chairs for those who cannot afford them. “I decided I don’t just want to give away bread to the adults,”

says Saterien. “Everyone wants everything for free. Now, this is a win-win situation. People of the community get nutritious food and bread in exchange for the tags they bring. “Eventually, the tags brought in could assist someone who is in need of a wheelchair.” The feeding scheme does its work with donations from the Retreat Haven Night Shelter, but most days there just isn’t enough to feed as many people as members would like. Saterien appeals to organisations or other members of the community to donate food, clothes or any other items to give to the people of Lavender Hill. For more information contact Marlene on (021) 702-3501 or 082 799 3579.

A noble fight HUNDREDS of women, and men, took to the streets of the Cape Town CBD at the weekend clad in outfits their mothers would probably frown upon to protest against sexist perceptions that women should watch what they wear or “rightfully” face the bitter consequences. Waving placards and dressed in naughty numbers including mini skirts, boob tubes and fish nets, the skimpy outfits were aimed at showing that a woman’s attire was not to blame for her being raped. And while the internationally recognised “SlutWalk” received much attention on the streets and in the media, the question begging to be asked, is whether a country like South Africa is ready to wholeheartedly adopt this otherwise progressive perspective. Is this just one small step towards chipping away at mountains of tragic misconceptions about women and their sexuality? Statistics reveal that South Africa is the world’s highest ranking nation for reported cases of rape. Ironically, a South African MP tweeted about the SlutWalk wondering whether he would “get lucky” if he had attended the event. The crimson faced MP later apologised claiming he had not been briefed on the reason for the march. But the MP’s comment illustrates the view, in all fairness, held by many South African men (and some women) from all cultures. SA is a nation borne of somewhat conservative roots and paternalistic ideals where the woman has traditionally been expected to know her place; in the kitchen, good for little else except playing a nurturing role. It is true that the New South Africa has ushered in legislation aimed at backing the progression of women. SA women, by law, are the masters of their own sexuality, reproductive health and political views; and with all this in place the time has never been more ripe for social reform. SlutWalks are a fun way for women to convey a powerful message, but the real impact is made in everyday conversations and responses in the home, classroom, office, sportsfield and, even places of worship. It is only once women realise and value their worth, that they stop becoming victims of stereotyping and abuse.

The stars of Shoprite Steenberg THIS letter of recognition goes out to the staff at Shoprite Steenberg, who work tirelessly and unselfishly in this amazing store where the locals find it so easy to shop till they drop. The management is amazing and very friendly, and that is what they should know above all. To my favourite, Mrs Annelies Kallis the administrative manager, you are a real inspiration to the staff and clients at shoprite. You do a sterling job. You also deal with ongoing dissatisfied customers and need to be brave, and that is what you do.

To the frontline ladies you, are well trained and what you do is brilliant for me as a customer who frequents your clean and pretty store all the time. Mrs Kallis, hang in there. You are unique, and the work you do is not unnoticed at all. For your outreach to those you reach out to out of your own pocket, God will bless you in abundance. To all staff at Shoprite, you are the best Shoprite team ever in the Western Cape. Keep on giving your best. CLIVE JACOBS Lavender Hill

Archie “Dat” Sopazi, widely regarded as the founder and one of the frontrunners of this style of rapping, is back on the lineup as the third leading artist. A surprise appearance will also be made by some of the leading artists who took part in a previous “Hip Hop Kaslam”. The Baxter Theatre will provide buses to transport audience members to and from the show at no extra cost. Theatre-going buses leave the Gugulethu Sports Complex and Radio Zibonele in Khayelitsha at 15:30, and head off from the Delft parking lot opposite Spar and Crossroads Circle at 16:00. Tickets cost R30; book through Computicket on 083 915 8000, online at www.computicket.co.za, or at any Shoprite or Checkers outlet.

TOUCHING SUCCESS: The South African Touch Association recently sent six teams to Scotland to compete at the World Cup of Touch, held over five days at Edinburgh University and attended by 26 countries. World Touch Rugby powerhouses Australia and New Zealand dominated the tournament in most of the divisions, and South Africa held onto its third position overall, winning bronze medals in the men’s, mixed and senior mixed competitions, while the men’s over35s won silver after a final battle with Australia. The local Spring Leagues kick off on 5 September, and people of “all shapes and sizes” are invited to join and take up the sport of touch rugby. Platinum Stars snatch Paulse TASMIN CUPIDO

AFTER much deliberation about his future and the team to which he will pledge his allegiance for the 2011-2012 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season, Athlone local Nathan Paulse signed a twoseason contract with Platinum Stars yesterday (Monday). Paulse will again join Platinum Stars coach Owen da Gama in Rustenberg after being head-hunted by him for a number of years. The two worked together last season when Paulse was on loan from Swedish club Hammarby FC to Bloemfontein Celtic last season, when Da Gama coached the side. According to Paulse’s father, Jeff, one of the reasons for his son’s decision was the fact that Da Gama has been “persistent” in getting the player on board since his days as the coach of Silver Stars FC. “The decision was made with his head and not his heart – it was in his best interest to go to Stars as they also

put the best deal on the table,” Jeff says. “Nathan wasn’t in a hurry to get to a team, but he really is happy with his decision. Being a Cape Town boy and very family-orientated made the decision difficult, but in the end one has to realise that his career is a business and a club is a company – Stars was on top of his list.” Paulse was also in talks with SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic and a Belgian club. He was also still contracted with Hammarby, with whom he signed in 2008. “The negotiations were a long process, with him still being contracted,” Jeff says. “The coach and guys at Stars really went all out, and were persistent in getting Nathan out of his contract to be a permanent fixture for them.” And Paulse’s main aim during the season will be to reward Da Gama by netting as many goals as possible this season, his father says. Paulse was named Ajax CT’s top goal scorer three times in his 10year stint with the club, also win-

ning the most improved player award in the 2007-2008 season. A press release issued by Stars after the signing describes Paulse as a “vastly experienced striker who has one Bafana Bafana cap to his name”. “He started his career with Ajax Cape Town, enjoying success there before joining Swedish side Hammarby in 2008,” the press release said. “He played last season on loan at Bloemfontein Celtic and was impressive in his displays, with his aerial ability giving Phunya Sele Sele another dimension to their attack”. Coach Da Gama was quoted saying: “I have always been a great admirer of Nathan Paulse, and I understand how to utilise him to get the best from the player, so when the opportunity arose to sign him, I was very happy to do so.” Paulse is unlikely to feature for his new club when they take on Celtic at the Moruleng Stadium tomorrow evening.

Piece of my Springbok mind

TASMIN CUPIDO

WITH the 2011 Rugby World Cup a mere 17 days away, and teams making their final preparations to take a shot at winning that prestigious Webb Ellis Trophy, our boys are finding it hard to convince the world they are capable of holding onto their champion status. After a dismal performance during the Tri-Nation series, and hampered with injuries to some top players, the Springboks march on, and will now be preparing to name their final 23-man World Cup squad later this evening. However, the Springboks displayed a courageous effort against a seemingly weakened All Black outfit this past weekend, sending the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium crowd into a frenzy. Weakened side? Who cares? They left our shores without a victory, that’s all that matters. The All Blacks, rightfully rated as the number one team in the world, are favourites to win the cup; it’s believed they have no competition in this year’s tournament, partly because of their home ground advantage. As a Springbok supporter myself, I’m wondering whether our lacklustre performance this far is an attempt at a tactical mind game. I’m wondering if coach Peter De Villiers wants the nation to believe

we are not good enough. I’m wondering whether each and every supporter reading this now is telling themselves that we’re running out of excuses. These are things passing through the mind of a supporter of a team who’ll hold onto that Webb Ellis Trophy until there are those worthy enough of taking it from us. Still, being rated number one before a World Cup, having the tournament on your own home soil and going into the tournament with an unbeaten status surely is a recipe for success, isn’t it? I cannot read the future, nor assume what the outcome might be, but if you were to ask me who

IT’S DERBY time again: the two Cape sides in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Engen Santos and Ajax Cape Town, clash horns at Athlone Stadium tomorrow (Wednesday) evening. And – once again – both sides will be going into the match with hopes of finally securing their first wins for the 2011-2012 PSL season. While Ajax CT were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Maritzburg United at Cape Town Stadium, Santos returned to the drawing board after a 1-0 loss to BidVest Wits in Nelspruit. Ajax also played to a 1-1 draw to Kaiser Chiefs in the first leg of the MTN 8 semifinal at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday. The last time the two sides met was for a friendly at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday 27 July; Santos were the convincing 4-0 victors. The last time the two met in the PSL was in February last season. Then it was a 10-man Ajax team who won 4-3 in a high-paced match. Now both Boebie Solomons’ and Maarten Stekelenburg’s chargers will be wanting to draw first blood as they search for their first win of the league. The match, hosted by Santos, kicks off at 19:30.

gether they will bring that cup home. It’s a cheesy slogan, but who cares, so long as we’re not doing some “war dance” in the middle of the pitch, which I think could be done behind closed doors and not wasting millions of viewers’ time. You think I’m the only one? Well, the Australian Rugby Board will soon be discussing the possibility of actually banning the “Haka” and sending the moves back to the dance floor. Nevertheless, back to the rugby. I’ll try and keep my comments on the pitch. This past weekend, New Zealand were without two of their key figures in the All Black squad. Prolific point scorer Daniel Carter and hardworking Richie McCaw were left at home, but funnily enough, neither were confirmed to be injured. Before the start of the TriNation series, the Springboks’ long injury list concerned the All Blacks and Aussies, with Graham Henry’s men being the first to lodge complaints to SANZAR. You’re probably wondering why I’m raising this point, but if you were reading carefully, you would have noticed I raised tactical mind games earlier in this column. Does nobody regard that as a tactical mind game? Just a thought... To conclude, next month’s World Cup will probably be the most unpredictable tournament to date, but the amount of talent heading into this cup is amazing, and surely something not to be missed. Strong WP presence in SA squad TASMIN CUPIDO

THE recent announcement that the South African junior softball squad will participate in the Junior Women’s World Championship in Cape Town in December saw a total of 12 Western Province players and officials included as part of the team. The tournament will be held from Wednesday 7 to Thursday 17 December at the Turfhall Stadium in Crawford, Athlone. Sixteen countries will be participating in the tournament, and the City of Cape Town is presently upgrading the local stadium, which is the home of softball in the city. And with eight players and four officials set to be wearing the green and gold during the two-week tourney, they will see the event as their opportunity to show their worth in the diamond against some of the world’s best. Carly Mulder, Lauren Mulder, Justine Steward, Kayl-Anne Stoffels, Kathryn van Boom, Nicole Alexander, Natalie Abrahams and Alex Fortune will all represent the country in the international tournament, while Shahieda Majiet (trainer), Lynn Alexander (assistant manager), Lester Smith (head coach) and Shihaam Nacerodien (assistant coach) will deal with the logistics and coaching aspects as part of the coach team. The players range from the under-16 to under-19 age groups. And the girls are looking to get as much support behind them as

they can while they prepare for the competition, says assistant manager Lynn Alexander. “The squad was selected after the under19 tournament in Durban in December and several training sessions,” she says. “These training sessions made it possible for management to fine-comb the squad and narrow it down from well over 40 players to the final squad of 17 and four reserves.” The team was announced after the National Provincial under-23 tournament held in Durban two weeks ago. “Having so many players from WP in the squad really is an achievement, with Gauteng being the only province to have more players in the squad,” Alexander says. “Most of these girls have come through the ranks – including the school teams – so this really says a lot about the development of youths in softball in this province.” The girls have been training since April, and are looking forward to playing in front of their friends and family in the South African colours. “When we went to the Junior Youth Championships in Prague in 2009, we only had three supporters with us, so it is going to be great to have most of the stadium backing us,” Alexander says. “The girls are nervous, yet excited, and are really seeing this as an opportunity to showcase their abilities on the international softball stage. They will give it their best shot to make Softball South Africa, their parents, their friends and the entire country proud of them.”
