Begging trio raise ire JUANITA WILLIAMS

THE behaviour of three boys – believed to be responsible for an attack on a 90-yearold woman – are cause for concern to Southfield residents. No-one knows where the boys live, although it is believed they may be from Parkwood. The trio, aged about nine to 12 years, regularly beg from motorists at the intersections of Victoria and De Waal roads and De Waal Road and the M5. One motorist describes them as “extremely scary” when they approach drivers waiting at the robots. Gifford Freeman, of the Southfield Neighbourhood Watch, says he has received re-

ports that the boys swear at people, invade private properties and have been a nuisance for a few years. While on patrol, Freeman says he has seen them around at 03:00. He suspects they are being influenced by an elder boy who allegedly has a criminal record for house break-in. “I have seen (him) hiding in a telephone box nearby. These boys obviously have no discipline at home and don’t seem to go to school. I have emailed and phoned ward councillor Jan Burger. When social services went to check the boys they just ran away. Social services say they can’t intervene without speaking to the parents, but no one knows their address. I have tried every avenue – police, councillor, social services and still nothing gets done.” Freeman says although the police regular-

A spokesperson for the Village Care Centre in Montague Village, Lavender Hill, says they would send a careworker to speak to the children and find out why they are not in school and speak to the parents. The centre runs a drop-in facility for children not at school. They get breakfast and lunch, but are expected to go home in the evening. Call the centre on (021) 701 8840.

A woman (90) complained that when she tried to chase one boy out of her garden, he picked up a branch and hit her. It is suspected the boys are being fed by a family in the area, and this is encouraging them to hang around. Freeman says he is very concerned about their welfare: “I hate to see them suffer. I have children myself and want to get something done, before it is too late.” Burger says he has spoken to all the relevant authorities and was under the impression the children had gone back to their home, as he hasn’t seen them in the area for a while. He is concerned about the numbers of children who seem to be playing truant

‘Buddy’ dies in stabbing LIAM MOSES

A MAN accused of stabbing his friend to death has surrendered to the Steenberg Police after initially leaving the scene of the crime. The man, who cannot be named as he has yet to be charged, is believed to have stabbed his friend at Stormers Pub in Retreat Road. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday 18 November after the two men allegedly argued about alcohol. Kevin Southgate, chairperson of the Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF), has

blamed the owner of the pub for incident. “It was somebody who apparently ordered his drinks and somebody else helped himself to the guy’s drinks and that resulted in an altercation,” says Southgate. He says the CPF is still trying to ascertain whether the man had had a knife on his person or not. “If he had the knife on him that confirms our suspicions that people who frequent this place are not searched for weapons. “If the person was inside and he never had the knife, he then went outside to fetch the knife. People in the sports bars should definitely not have dangerous weapons of them.”

the years I have known them. “I was surprised by what had happened; I still can’t get to terms with it. I still don’t know what actually sparked it off because as far as I am concerned they are good buddies. He adds: “They are regular patrons here. They have been coming here for about five years. They weren’t troublesome people. They used to play darts and pool together; they even used to fish together on weekend trips away.” People’s Post contacted the Steenberg Police by email and phone on Friday 23 and Monday 26 November for more information on the stabbing, but no response had been received by the time of going to print. The victim, whose name is also known to People’s Post, was buried on Monday according to Southgate. The suspect gave himself up on the same day.

However, Walter Turner, the owner of the pub maintains the stabbing technically did not take place on his property. Turner says the stabbing took place on a part of the yard that is technically 6 Tulip Road, an adjacent property. “The guy ran in here and he collapsed. His friends took him out. What transpired outside nobody knows. There was one guy who was witness and he told the police what happened,” Turner says, adding he knows both the victim and suspect. He expressed shock at the incident. “Both of them are normal patrons of mine and they are actually good friends of one another over

DAGGA HAUL: An Overcome Heights resident has been released on R1 500 bail after appearing in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of dagga on Thursday 22 November. According to Muizenberg police spokesperson Captain Stephen Knapp the 18yearold was arrested the day before the court appearance at 06:00, when officers of the station acted on a tipoff from the community. Following on the tipoff, Knapp said police officers went to a house in the “vicinity of Rasta Road. After a thorough search of the premises they discovered of a large amount of dagga stored in a white drum behind the shack”. The dagga seized has a street value of R 3 000. Photographed with the confiscated dagga are, from left, Constables Nthando Silwane, Patrick Leaner, Salinda Mdana and Warrant Officer Gerald Gain. Photo: Supplied

Educare registration now open REGISTRATION for 2013 at Teddy’s Educare in Steenberg is now open. The educare, situated on the corner of Military Road and Diamond Drive in Sheraton Park, is registered and invites prospective

parents for a facility visit. It provides a quality education, trained teachers, cooked meals, potty training and Xhosa classes. For more information call the principal on 0 082 861 5751 or 0 (021) 701 7806.

For the record IN THE article “Renew car licence ahead of closure” (People’s Post, 30 October), it was incorrectly reported that the Retreat Roadworthy Centre had closed its doors. This is in fact not the case – the centre has moved premises, but is still in operation. The business now operates from Unit 15 Futura 15, Bark Road, Retreat. People’s Post apologises for any inconvenience.

Office still in operation THE Lavender Hill Advice Office is still in operation for more in-depth support and advice on various problems faced by the community. Contact Clive Jacobs for an appointment on 0 076 789 2178 for all complaints or maintenance services. In turn, he will report all the complaints to the relevant ward councillor and residents will get a reference number.

Plans for Shawco site shape up TASMIN CUPIDO

A TOTAL of 15 community organisations will be housed at the newly revamped Shawco building in Retreat. This comes after organisations were invited to apply for use of the facility, owned by the City of Cape Town, last year. On Wednesday the applicants were invited to attend the Social Development Summit for the Greater Retreat area at the Alphen Centre in Constantia. According to ward councillor Jan Burger the meeting was held to cement the use of the building, as well as the way forward. “It is important for the organisations to realise they will have to work together,” he states. “In the end the work they are doing is not about generating a profit, but rather about what is best for the community.” The organisations all operate within the

greater Retreat and Grassy Park areas. “They genuinely need to be doing good work for their fellow man – it needs to come from the heart,” Burger comments. The building was initially used as a retirement village, after which Shawco occupied it. It was then turned into a health faculty for UCT, but fell vacant 15 years ago. The City then set aside R300 000 for the upgrade of the run-down building, with the focus on repairing the roof, flooring, walls and windows and a clean-up of the interior. People’s Post previously reported on the City’s intention to use the facility, located on the corner of Retreat Road and Second Avenue, as a drug counselling centre (“Movement on drug centre”, People’s Post, 6 March). At the time residents voiced their concerns about the location of such a centre. Taking these concerns into account, the City decided the facility would be a multi-purpose unit and would be available to various

NGOs, with the idea of it being available to organisations according to a timetable. At the summit the organisations presented their plans for their organisations, while challenges faced by the community were also discussed. Issues such as the lack of availability of council-owned premises, lack of job creation and skills development and crime were all highlighted. The proposals presented by the organisations addressed these concerns. It was also decided that six unemployed people would be contracted by the City to clean the premises. “They met at the premises on Friday and will immediately commence with the cleaning and beautifying of the property,” Burger says. “We are really excited about the future of the Shawco building and positive about the back of the City’s Department of Social Development. “With the assistance of department em-

ployees Chantal Adams and Daniel Sass we are finally starting to see the fruits of our labour.” It is still unclear when the organisations will commence with operations at the building, but this will only be confirmed after the second summit, to be held in February.

Gaatjie residents hit back TASMIN CUPIDO

HUDDLED in poverty, theirs is still a family with love for one another. This how a resident of Die Gaatjie informal settlement, near Heathfield and Diep River, describes the place he calls home. People’s Post reported on allegations that the settlement, situated on Intersite property along the railway line, was growing (“‘Drug trade escalates’ at Gaatjie”, People’s Post, 20 November). Claims were made of drug and illegal liquor trading, rising population numbers and criminal elements. But a resident of the informal settlement for more than five years has lashed back, claiming residents of Die Gaatjie are “not criminals”. Speaking on condition of anonymity and on behalf of the residents, the man tells People’s Post his community was shocked by the allegations. “They are trying to make us seem like bad people, but we are not. Most of the people here are good, honest people,” he states. “We live from day to day, sometimes even begging, but we are good people. It really saddens me that people would think this of our community.” The man, whose name is known to People’s Post, denies claims the settlement is growing. “The population is certainly growing, but naturally. Women are having babies,” he says “But there are no new shacks being built. How can more be built when there is absolutely no place? The last available place was used for the construction of a church.” The number of homes at the informal settlement, which has entrances in Mocke and Station roads, was counting by the City of

Cape Town two years ago, he says. “The officials specifically pointed out that homes without official numbering will be destroyed by law enforcement authorities.” Challenging claims that a spate of burglaries in neighbouring suburbs is directly linked to Die Gaatjie, he says: “That is nonsense; the criminals are coming from other areas – definitely not from here. They are using our area as their escape route.” He explains how residents of the informal settlement once caught burglars, contacted the police and “taught the criminals a lesson. Why would criminals do that? We do not allow criminals in our area.” But questions around the illegal trade of drugs is met with silence and then affirmation. “Yes, in any informal settlement you will find drugs, but the residents are not druggies. They all drink, but will not touch drugs. They would much rather spend their pennies on liquor – pennies that they skarrel for.” He claims youths from neighbouring suburbs such as Heathfield, Elfindale, Bergvliet, Diep River and Meadowridge are the ones supporting the drug trade. “They walk in there freely and our people sometimes recognise them. If Die Gaatjie is a hotspot and crime generator, we want to see the statistics of how many crimes are being committed there. The are many police raids, but serious crimes do not happen here.” He expresses fear that they may lose their homes. “Where will we go to? Although many of us are educated people, we cannot find jobs; that is why we live here today,” he says, with emotion. “We might look like cabbages, but we are not green. We are all good people. People who love each other. People who just want to be left to live in peace.”

Shape up or pay for clean-up – City warns TASMIN CUPIDO

OWNERS of vacant plots in ward 110 need to intensify the maintenance at the plots. Failure to do so will result in the City of Cape Town taking over the maintenance and billing the owners. This initiative is being driven by ward 110 councillor Shanen Rossouw. The ward comprises of portions of Parkwood, Lavender Hill, Retreat and Grassy Park. She initiated the project after receiving several complaints from residents. “There is an active plan to have the vacant, problem plots cleaned and kept that way,” Rossouw states. “The City will take ownership of the plot by cleaning it and billing the owner thereafter. There has been numerous

It is an absolute eyesore.” The owner, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed she is aware of the problem and undertook to “have it cleaned” as soon as possible. Rossouw confirms she was approached by Miller, who says he has gone to “extremes” to have the property cleaned. “I visited the site with a City health inspector, who confirmed the problem, and then visited the home of the owner,” he says. “The owner cleaned the property, but I have been informed of the property’s current state. The owner has been informed of the City’s intention and will have 30 days to clean it, before the City commences with the clean-up and eventual billing.”

complaints about these properties and, despite requests for owners to shape up, they have not done so. This is the only way we can ensure that the ward is kept clean.” One such plot is the vacant property in Joseph Avenue, Grassy Park, which is now home to three informal structures. The structures have been occupied by vagrants since last year. The land is owned by a Retreat resident whose name is known to People’s Post. Joseph Avenue resident John Miller tells People’s Post he has, on several occasions, approached the owner to have the property cleaned. Overgrown grass, dumping and the recent occupation of the land were among the complaints. “The owner has it cleaned,” Miller says, “but everything goes back to the way it

Tiling: tips to heed CHRISTMAS is around the corner, so it’s that time of the year when your inner handyman gets the bet ter of you and you tackle renovations at your home with vigour. But one of the trickiest tasks to master is the art of laying a tile. This task does not only require preci sion, but loads of patience as well. If you are considering tiling your floors, these tips will come in handy: ) Always start in the middle of the area you want to tile, That way the finished product will be even. ) Ensure that the spacing between tiles is be tween eight to 10mm. ) Use a builder’s line to achieve perfect straight ness. ) Use only small amounts of adhesive, spreading it evenly across the tile. ) Allow the tiles to set before applying grouting – a day should be enough. Use a damp cloth to clean the surface. ) Do not walk on the finished product for at least three days. Happy tiling!

Decorating dos to get you going JADE LOTRIET

A SLICK of paint or a striking piece of art can work wonders in your home. So, if you’re thinking of making any changes, here’s what you need to consider: Discover your personal style: Your home has to represent you and you have to feel comfortable in it. Unfortunately, the process of decorating can become overwhelming – more so if you’re not exactly sure of what it is that you want to achieve. Spend some time discovering your likes and dislikes before jumping into a particular theme. Look at magazines, collect photo graphs of items that grab your attention, browse the net and visit more than one furni ture store. Soon you’ll start noticing a pat tern – use it as a guide to your own, unique decorating style. Pick a signature piece: This is the most dominant item in a room and it adds to the allround feeling of that particular space. Sig nature pieces or focal points, should project and emphasise the style that you are trying to create. It can be anything from your bed frame, a chest of draws or a painting. Put it at the top of your shopping list, as the rest of your goodies should ideally tie in around it. Use a variety of textures and patterns: Mixing and matching different looks and feels can work in your favour – if done cor rectly. The contrast of smooth and rough materi als and the combination of shiny and matte

home needs to be comfortable and practical – not only good to look at. Let the light in: This goes for interior light ing and natural light. If you have wide windows, draw back the drapes and let the sunlight shine through. The natural light will reflect nicely off white walls and neutral earthy tones. Interior light ing in your home is vital when decorating as it adds to the ambiance and should comple ment the theme of the room. You can choose from many different light ing fixtures like side lamps, hanging lamps, overhead fixtures and even chandeliers. – Women24

accessories will stop your space from look ing rigid and boring. Using a variety of tex tures will enhance visual interest and bring life to an otherwise dull home. Consider the function of the room: When decorating a room, have an idea of what the room will be used for. . Is there enough space for the activities that need to be done in that room? . Will your decorating style fit the room? If it is a play room, the theme and colour scheme should be bright, warm and playful, for example. If it’s your bedroom or a guest room, you might opt for something more se rene and calming. The bottom line: your

First get the right tools for that job CONSIDER yourself a handyman? Well, you know what they say: a man’s worth is measured by his tools. So you better ensure you have the following tools in your toolbox to qualify as a topnotch handyman: . Claw hammer – one side for hit ting nails in, one side for removing the ones you bent trying to hammer in.

. Measuring tape, because using your hands, feet and arms look silly. . Screwdrivers of various sizes and types. . A builder’s square or spirit level, because your eye just won’t cut it. . A chisel to remove wood and add door hinge. . A Stanley knife, because you don’t need to sharpen its blade. . A handsaw, although you get

the more advanced skill saw, the tra ditional handsaw will do the trick. . A block plane to remove layers of wood. . A crescent wrench, which can adjust the size of the wrench head to the side of the nut. . A pair of pliers. A pair of needle pliers and standard pliers can help to strip wires and reach into those hard to reach places.

when painting your interior walls: Clean the room by sweeping and dusting. Al so dust the walls you will be painting. If you are leaving the previous coat on, you can also wipe the wall with a damp cloth. Layer the floor with newspaper or any other sheets. This may guarantee, should you drop some paint, that the floors are not damaged or stained. Place masking tape on the skirting boards and electrical fittings. Inspect the walls for cracks and holes, and fill it with crack filler. Once dry, smooth the patches with sandpaper. Before commencing with your painting, stir the paint well and pour into a paint tray. Start by painting from one corner of the wall, applying the second coat after leaving it to dry for at least three hours. If you’re feeling creative, buy a stencil with shapes, stick it to the wall with masking tape and spraypaint over it with a different colour. Remove all masking tape and stencils once everything has dried. Stand back and be amazed at your hand work.

With all the bright colours available for your home, you can explore your creative side, while also having fun doing it. And if you are considering doing the job your self, here are some guidelines for you to follow

Early bird makes the saving ADVERTORIAL: AS 2012 draws to a close and we start planning for 2013, Boston City Cam pus & Business College is inviting all prospec tive students to enrol and pay their deposits early to avoid the annual tuition price increases and qualify for this year’s fees. All students who register and pay their depos its by Monday 10 December will benefit from this special offer. Registration is easy. Go to your nearest Boston branch and complete the free Ca reer Compass Assessment, valued at R500. This computerised assessment asks a variety of questions and aims to match the participant’s interests and skills. To gether with the help of a career counsel lor, the results will help you choose the most appropriate career path and choice. Once you have decided which course is right for you, you will need to complete the registration process and ensure you pay your deposit before the deadline and then get ready to launch an exciting new career with Boston by your side. As one of South Africa’s leading tertiary education institutions, offering over 80 career study options at over 40 colleges serv icing more than 20 000 learners throughout South Africa, Boston continues to prove that it is truly committed to “Education. For Life”. This kind of commitment and dedication has been recognised with Boston having been voted Coolest College in the Sunday Times Genera tion Next 2012 Survey, Best College for three consecutive years in The Star Your Choice awards and Best Computer Training College for

Work experience for college students ADVERTORIAL: Each day South African employers are confronted with a shortage of adequately quali fied and experienced staff. Students at Further Ed ucation and Training (FET) colleges are a good fu ture source of such staff. They can be tried out at a nominal cost to companies and at the same time develop their skills by offering them a short period of work experience.

the placement process. Job shadowing placement for National Certificate (Vocational) occurs in our June/July vacation period. Inservice work place ment for National Diploma students are scheduled for July and December. These experiential training sessions are aligned with Department of Higher Education and Training requirements. The only financial contribution expected from the host employer, is a nominal stipend to stu dents completing their 18 months inservice train ing to assist them in satisfying financial commit ments incurred during the inservice training peri od. The only other cost to the host employer is the notional one of supervising the students during their time in the company. We hope more companies will join us in this im portant exercise. Companies are invited to contact us to explore how placing our students can help grow their business and bottom line. For more in formation on work placement contact Winston Da mons by email at wdamons@cct.edu.za or Lelanie Louw at llouw@cct.edu.za or call (021) 404 6700. The College of Cape Town also offers bursaries. For more information call the info line at 086 010 3682, email info@cct.edu.za or visit www.cct.edu.za.

As work placement officers our assignment is to place students who are registered for National Certificate (Vocational), National Diploma and oth er college programmes with employers for work placebased experience (WBE) which could be in the form of job shadowing or inservice training. Our goal is to place students for between five to 10 consecutive days in each year of study for job shadowing and 18 months for inservice training. During these placements, employers are asked to orientate students to their companies and allow them to work alongside employees doing jobs re lated to the students’ field of study. For many young people, obtaining this kind of work experience has been lifetransforming. They have developed a better understanding of their chosen career and how it is practised in the work place. This has motivated them to work harder and succeed. Many students have forged relationships with employers which led to immediate offers of em ployment after graduation. Employers benefit, too. Students are a source of future employees that you can get to know before hir ing. By hosting students, employers get a chance to influence the training the college provides and slant it more towards the needs of your industry. Employers can also get points on their company’s BEE scorecard. CREATIVE: Jewellery design stu Should a company be dents at work. Buying clothes on a budget

2012

SPLURGE on clothing you never wear? Tracy Gold says stop! Here’s how. Do you know how much you spend on clothing and accessories each month or is it just a blur? Many of us don’t like to discuss, never mind think about, how much we spend. If you find that you keep buying clothing, but still have nothing to wear, then it’s time to reassess. Here are my top tips to making your wardrobe budget work for you: 1. Decide on a budget. Look carefully at what you are actually spending, what you can afford and what you want to spend. Then commit to that amount. 2. Avoid just buying on accounts. Limiting your self to stores that offer accounts limits your buy ing potential. There are many smaller stores out there that offer good value and something unique. 3. Take a look at what is in your wardrobe. En sure that you have a clear idea of what is in there so you can access what you need before going shopping. 4. Do some wardrobe and budget planning. A little bit of planning can go a long way to saving you time and money. Visit www.tracygold.co.za for more informa tion. – Women24

Man, go, groove at K’bosch Gardens

Tuesday 27 November 2012

ICONIC SA band Mango Groove will set the stage ablaze at the sunset concerts at Kirstenbosch Gardens on Sunday 2 December.

This will be their first and only 2012 show in Cape Town. If their past two sold-out concerts at the same venue are anything to go by, it promises to be one fun-filled, super family afternoon with happy grooves, dancing and picnicking to Mango Groove’s greatest hits. Mango Groove and lead vocalist Claire Johnston have only performed a select number of shows in SA this year, as they have been busy on two very big projects. The band is working on a film and musical project. Johnston is also working on an all-new album which will be a celebration of great South African songs through the decades. In Claire’s words: ‘’ She says: “I am insanely excited about this project. It is a concept I came up with a while ago, and it has been great finally to get back into the recording studio. The album is very much a celebration of South African music, and to that it extent it has a strong Mango Groove influence. At the same time it is also very different and distinctive, and I am hoping to surprise a lot of people with the treatment we have given to a lot of the songs. I will also be working with some of my favourite SA artists on key tracks, which will be a great honour for

me.” The summer sunset concert will be from 17:30 to 19:00. Gates open at 16:00. For further information and ticket prices, call (021) 799 8783/8620 or visit www.sanbi.org. Tickets available at www.webtickets.co.za.

DIVE IN: Two readers can win a copy of ultra swimmer Theodore Yach’s hardcover book In my element. The book, valued at R275, has been nominated for an award by the 2012 World Open Water Swimming Association. Yach has completed 62 Robben Island crossings and he has also swum a 29km loop from Three Anchor Bay, through icy sharkinfested waters around Robben Island, and back. Big hitting at Wynberg Super Sixes LIAM MOSES

IT WILL be raining boundaries in Wynberg this weekend when the Wynberg Cricket Club Super Sixes tournament takes place. The Super Sixes will pit 12 teams of six players against each other in 10-over matches. Each team will have just five overs to set a defendable score or surpass their opponent’s total, and every team member, except, the wicketkeeper will bowl an over. This is the second time the tournament is being hosted and Ebrahim-Nadeem Parker, head of youth coaching at Wynberg CC, says the format makes the game interesting for

purists and casual cricket watchers. “We actually found that spinners were the most economical, even though you think they are going to get hit,” says Parker. “So you still have to play good cricket and use proper technique, instead of just trying to bash the ball all over the park. It’s very entertaining and I think everybody really enjoyed themselves.” The first instalment of the tournament took place in March, but the organisers decided to move the event forward on the cricket calendar as they felt December was more suitable. The Super Sixes was created by Wynberg CC as an attempt to recreate the feel of the IPL for youths and, Parker says, all of the fanfare of the world’s most famous short form

cricket competition can be expected. “That’s why all the teams will have their own colours and their own logo. We sort of liven up the atmosphere and give them a platform to enjoy themselves,” he says. “Fans can expect entertaining and attacking cricket, as well as a lot of fun. We interview the captains on the microphone just like the IPL. They enjoy the spectacle of playing in a well organised tournament.” The inaugural tournament was won by the Wynberg Warriors team and the champions will return to defend their crown. Other teams participating are: Primroses, Blue Bells, Strandfontein A and B, Habsani Royals, Kalusta Superchargers A and B, Groote Schuur, Wynberg, Pumas, Wynberg

Warriors and St Augustines A and B. These 12 sides will be grouped into four pools of three teams each and, after a roundrobin stage, the top two teams will advance to the knockout stages of the competition. Several prizes will be up for grabs, including free entry to Ratanga Junction for the winning team, a Cape Cobras jersey and a signed Highveld Lions jersey. The winning team and individual award winners will also take home trophies and medals. Parker adds around 2 000 people are expected to attend the tournament, which starts at 08:30 on Sunday 2 December. Entry to the ground is free and children’s entertainment will be provided. For more information call Parker on 079 525 0184.

Blue Bells bowled a bouncer LIAM MOSES

THE City of Cape Town has fallen flat on its responsibility to the home of Blue Bells Cricket Club. This according to members of the club, that plays its home matches at Rooikraans Sports Complex in Grassy Park. They claim the preparation and maintenance of the pitch, essentially the responsibility of the City, has squarely fallen on the club. Blue Bells say they have not been provided with the bulli – a type of clay – needed to prepare the pitch, the outfield is not regularly cut and the roller they use has not been sent for a much-needed service. Chairperson Faadiel Gamieldien says it has been difficult to grow the club and achieve performance goals because of the challenges they face at the facility. “Our ultimate goal will be to get into the 1A League, one level before provincial cricket. One can do that if you have the players, your development is on par and get the motivation from all the players and management,” says Gamieldien. “One of the support structures is your facility. The facility is most important to me, in terms of getting it right.” Blue Bells currently have four senior and 11 junior teams and play in the 2B League. They have also qualified for the finals of the Western Province Cricket Association AMA20 competition, which will be held at Sa-

hara Park Newlands at the end of the season. Gamieldien adds many players from Grassy Park join cricket teams in other areas because they have better facilities. “One of your attractions will be your facility. You will find a child will say he would rather play at Claremont or Cape Town Cricket Club because of the way Rooikraans looks,” he comments. “Unfortunately this will be players who can afford to do that and we provide cricket for people from (poor communities.)” However, Councillor Tandeka Gqada, City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee member for Community Services, says the club agreed to continue preparing their own pitch when they met with City officials in September. “The roller is in working order and the service period has not yet been reached. Blue Bells has not been acting responsibly, in that they have not been storing the machine in an unacceptable store. “This contributes to the functionality of the equipment,” she says. “The vendor for the supply of the bulli has been reported to the City’s Supply Chain Management (SCM) for default. Orders for the bulli were sent on Friday 17 and Friday 24 August. SCM is yet to decide on how the vendor will be penalised.” Blue Bells also claims cricket clubs at other facilities were receiving better service delivery. Gqada’s responds: “The City is striving to produce an equitable service throughout the metropole.”

THE management of Scotcheskloof Walmers RFC are bullish about their chances in the SARU Community Cup, despite being drawn in one of the toughest groups in the competition. SKW were drawn in Group A of the inaugural tournament, along with Jonsson College Rovers (KZN), GAP Despatch (EP), Villagers Worcester (Boland) and Sishen (Griquas). But despite the quality of the opposition in the pool the club’s director of coaching, Labeeb Levy, is positive his team is up for the challenge. “We are in the ‘pool of death’ because we’ve got the Eastern Province runners up and the Boland, Griquas and KZN champions,” says Levy. “But we are busy building our team and will give it our best. At the end of the day it’s 15 players against 15 players. You give people respect, but you don’t have to fear them. You just have to prepare properly and take the game to them. Hopefully the club can attract more players, administrators and coaches.” The tournament, which will replace the National Club Championships, will kick off on Saturday 16 February and feature the top non-university teams in the country. Rovers are also the current National Club Championships holders, while Despatch finished second on the Grand Challenge log – just seven points behind Nelson Mandela University. Villagers won the Boland Premier League by 14 points

and Sishen took the Griquas Premier League by seven points. SKW are set to start training for the competition this week and will focus on strengthening and bringing depth to the first team squad. They will need to finish first or second on the table in order to achieve their primary goal of advancing beyond the second round of the competition. To achieve this, the will need to defeat at least three of the teams in the group. Levy admits the other participating clubs have an edge on SKW in terms of resources, saying the club urgently needs to find a sponsor if they are to compete at that level. “We are lacking some resources, which we will fill soon. We need to up our resources in all capacities – from players to facilities. That’s the shortage we need to fill else we are going to be in trouble,” says Levy. “We are looking for sponsors, for finance and products. We (currently) don’t have a sponsor, so we are looking for someone to give all of our players access to a gym, supplements and warm up equipment.” SKW qualified for the tournament as a wildcard selection, despite finishing below Hamiltons on the Super League A table. They will be joined by league runnersup Durbanville-Bellville. . Durb-Bell have been drawn in Group B, along with Pretoria Police (Blue Bulls), Bloemfontein Police (Freestate), Welkom Rovers (Griffons) and African Bombers (EP).

SAB League title race heats up LIAM MOSES

HEIDEVELD side Junction Rovers FC continued their climb up the SAB League standings after claiming three points against Athlone club Orient FC this weekend. Rovers narrowly beat their neighbours 1-0 at the Lentegeur Sports Complex on Saturday, to move up from third place to second on the table. The victory was Rovers’ sixth of the season – after nine games – and leaves them on 19 points. Meanwhile, Zeesha FC continued their domination of the tournament unabated, after claiming their eighth win over RC Athletic. Zeesha beat the Grassy Park side 2-0, to maintain their strangle hold on the table. They now lead the log with 25 points. Lotus River club Heath Athletic, who lost 2-0 to Zeesha in the previous round, had an improved result on Saturday when they played to a 2-2 draw with Silver Spurs. Both sides dropped down two places on the table despite claiming a point, with Heath now occupying ninth and Spurs in 14th. Battswood FC suffered a slight dip

in form this weekend, drawing against Engen Santos after winning their previous two games. The Wynberg side dragged themselves out of the relegation zone with the six points they claimed, but they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Santos on Saturday. Battswood now hold 12th place on the table, with eight log points, after two draws, two victories and five losses. Santos find themselves in last place on just four points. Young Idols, also from Manenberg, moved up from 13th to 11th after winning their fixture against X1 Express. The 1-0 loss saw Express move in the opposite direction, down to 13th from 11th. Durbanville FC moved up from 10th to seventh on the log after winning their third game this season. The northern suburbs side beat Tribes FC 3-1. However, Tribes still hold onto third place, despite the loss. Du Noon Academy and Shockwaves FC also played out a 1-1 draw in their match, finishing the round in sixth and second last places respectively. The fixture between Oriental Gunners and Leeds Lentegeur was postponed due to Gunners playing in the Nedbank Cup.

Cape NFD derby set to enthral LIAM MOSES

SANTOS FC will go into tomorrow’s clash with neighbours Milano United flush with confidence, after securing a morale boosting victory in the National First Division (NFD) over the weekend. Santos been inconsistent this season, having lost two games and drawn as many as they have won, but the Lansdowne based club now seem to have found their form. The People’s Team convincingly brushed aside Witbank Spurs 4-1 at the Puma Rugby Stadium on Sunday, claiming their third victory of the season. However, Theo Hempe, head coach at Milano, believes his side will be more than a match for their more illustrious opponents when they meet at Athlone Stadium tomorrow (Wednesday) 19:30. “It is a derby, so whether it’s a high scoring or low scoring game, the aim is to win. We want to defend as well as we can, but at the end of the days it’s just about the three points,” says Hempe. “We feel that we have the ammunition and

we have a lot of our players back from injury. We are confident that we can pull off the victory.” Milano’s record in the competition this season reads exactly the same as their local rivals, with three wins, three draws and two losses. The Grassy Park club are currently just one place above Santos on the table in sixth and they will also be buoyed after their performance at the weekend. Milano returned to winning ways on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over FC AK at the Rooikraans Sports Complex, after losing 3-2 in their last game against league leaders Mpumalanga Black Aces. The defeat was Milano’s first at home this season and Hempe blamed his side’s poor defensive performance for the loss. He says his team were much improved this time around. “The way the players responded after our last game was very positive; tt was a huge improvement. But there is still room for improvement, because we still gave them a soft goal,” he says. “If we defended better and pressed better then the game would have been a lot easier. We worked on our pressing from the front (after

the last game). We don’t just want to blame our defenders each time. It’s everyone’s responsibility. When we let in that soft goal, it just showed us there are things we need to perfect.” The Milano coach believes the battle for control of the midfield will be the most important in tomorrow’s tactical war at Ath-

lone Stadium, but concedes the derby atmosphere may have an even bigger impact. “The biggest difference is the people know every player. It’s just much more personal than playing teams from Johannesburg. The final thing is just about the passion; the passion is what drives you and takes you through the game.”
