Secret ‘to his grave’ TASMIN CUPIDO
A CRIME fighter. A human rights activist. A community leader. A child killer. Owen Shanmugan (47) will no longer be remembered for the good work he did for residents of the Hillview informal settlement. Instead, the man fondly known as Charra will be remembered for the gruesome murder of his son Lionel (2) and his girlfriend Yolandie Petersen’s daughter Shaylin (4) last week. In a failed suicide attempt, Shanmugan also slit his own throat and later died in hospital while in police custody. Hillview community worker Charmaine Pretorius tells how she was one of the first people at the scene after Shanmugan’s girl-

from their daycare centres earlier that day. Petersen reportedly said she was in disbelief and trying to come to terms with the death of her children. The community is also still reeling of shock after last Wednesday’s brutal killings. This is not the first time Shanmugan was brought before the law for an act of violence upon a minor. Assault charges we brought against him after he kicked a 13-year-old boy on his back for allegedly “not respecting” him (“Leader on assault charges”, People’s Post, 3 August 2010). At the time residents voiced concerns about Shanmugan’s “leadership style”, stating he often threatened them. But Pretorius, who fought alongside Shanmugan for services such as water, sanitation

friend ran to her for help screaming: “Charmaine ... Owen! Kom help my!” Pretorius immediately ran to the wooden structure and tried to open the door, which was bolted shut with a pole. “I opened the window and saw the lifeless, bloodied bodies of the children on the bed.” She phoned the police and asked some men who had gathered at the scene to force open the door. Once inside, they found Shanmugan lying on the floor in a pool of blood, still conscious. “We asked him who had done this to them, because we thought someone had broken into the home. He answered: ‘Ek, ek!’” The police then arrived, declaring both toddlers dead and arresting Shanmugan for murder. He had allegedly collected both children

Nobody knows why he did what he did; that secret he took to his grave.” A memorial service was held for the toddlers in Hillview last week. They will be buried on Saturday. . It is believed Shanmugan was buried in his hometown in Durban yesterday (Monday).

We salute our community workers Dear reader, Last week I had the privilege and honour of meeting two inspirational community workers; Ebrahim Hull of Lansdowne and Ottery’s Keith Blake. Both men are passionate about serving their communities, altruistically, and asking for nothing in return. Charismatic Ebrahim visited our offices and regaled us with his knowledge of the dynamics and pulse of both young and old in his community. Ebrahim has been a resident of Lansdowne for 38 years and is known as the “Mayor of Groenvlei”. Day and night, he is always on call when his community needs him, but this humble, modest man does not want praise, highlighting instead the good work of other unsung community heroes. At one stage, Ebrahim was secretary of five different organisations simultaneously, in addition to holding a demanding fulltime senior job in the furniture business. His concern for the challenges faced by society, especially young people, is topped only by the action he takes to address social issues such as vagrancy, drug abuse and crime.
Among others, he was the founder of some community structures, has been involved in sport and cultural bodies, served his local mosque and was a radio presenter. Luckily for wife Gadija, this is all in the past and Ebrahim can now focus primarily on being a doting husband and father to his three sons and daughter and grandfather to 12 granddaughters and four grandsons. My meeting with Ebrahim was followed by a visit to Keith’s home and I was warmly welcomed by Keith, his wife Tina, adorable granddaughter and the family’s dog – who was perhaps not so pleased to meet me. A retired police captain, Keith is called “Kaptein” by the many underprivileged people whose lives he touches. With Tina at his side, he tirelessly serves poor communities and the couple always have a meal for the poor who come knocking at their door. Keith is a regular letter writer to People’s Post. Tina, he says, is his soulmate, his voice of reason and the editor of the numerous letters he sends us. A gate they had recently put up, has had to come down, they say, as it obstructs their
view of “their people” – referring to the homeless and other needy people who come to them for food. Assisted by others like them and their family, including three sons, the couple’s focus is providing relief, love and prayer to residents in informal settlements and other underprivileged areas. Over the years they have taken goods such as food, clothes and blankets to the needy, ensuring that Christmas cheer prevails in the poorest of communities and providing Easter eggs and pickled fish to hundreds of poor people over Easter. Their prayers and public appeals have always been answered abundantly, with truckloads of goods coming their way and finding its way through them to those in need. Both Keith and Ebrahim are spiritual people, expecting nothing in return for their good deeds which impact on hundreds, if not thousands, of lives. Their philosophy, positivity and eternal hope in the face of despair prove how significant a difference one person can make; that it really does begin with one. Till next time, go well. . Rally to save Princess Vlei TASMIN CUPIDO
PLANS to refurbish the open space of Princess Vlei into a natural fortress was taken to a higher level on Saturday. A People’s Rally, hosted by the Princess Vlei Forum (PVF), attracted more than 2 300 people. The event also saw the signing of a petition to save the vlei from being developed into a mega-mall. The proposed development by Insight Property Developers is expected to comprise a 9090m² shopping mall and a 100m² taxi rank, leaving only a 30m buffer strip from the vlei’s shore for recreational purposes. It has been a tug-of-war between the owners of the land, the City of Cape Town, the provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning and those opposing the development since the plans were initially submitted more than 15 years ago. In November the City’s Spatial Planning, Environment and Land Use Management Committee (Spelum) turned down the developer’s application for the extension of the rezoning. The developers, in turn, appealed to the MEC for Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell, who approved the application for the land to be rezoned from public open space to business. But there is still no clarity on whether the development has received a final approval from the City. And those in opposition to the development have decided to launch the People’s Plan – a plan to refurbish the land and recreational space, a walk-way around the vlei, a community garden, a market place and an Environmental and Socio-nature Centre where the history of the Cape Flats will be curated (“Plans for the Princess”, People’s Post, 5 June). At the rally Philip Bam, chairperson of the Lotus River and Grassy Park Civic Associa-
Gang activity GANG violence is once again plaguing the greater Lavender Hill area. The conflict is centralised to the areas of Lavender Hill, St Montague Village and Seawinds, which fall within the police precincts of Muizenburg and Steenberg. Steenberg police and the provincial tactical response team have conducted many disruptive operations to curb the violence. Operations the past weekend included a number of arrests; 14 for believed gang activity, 25 for drug-related charges, and various drug and fire arm confiscations.
Police imbizo SIGNING UP: Youths show their support for Princess Vlei at the People’s Rally on Saturday 16 June. Photo: Supplied tion (Logra) and a founder of PVF said: “One of the wonderful things this campaign has done for us is it has brought us to realise who we are – in this way they took away our heritage and inheritance. Just as we are restoring the fynbos here at the vlei, we will restore our dignity.” Also showing his support for the plan was Cosatu provincial chairperson Tony Ehrenreich. “Don’t for a minute believe those who will tell you workers will stand with these big business interests because it will provide us jobs. We know we need jobs in this country, but much more importantly we know we need to defend and sustain our heritage and that is why Cosatu is standing behind the Princess Vlei committee,” he said.
“This is not about politics and it is not about race; it is about assuring ourselves that we must stand on the side of justice. We need places where we can come together as black and white in a real space, like the Princess Vlei. But those spaces are shrinking – they are being taken away, but they should be expanding. We want to assure you that while we will sign petitions and pray for the Princess Vlei, we will also not hesitate to fight for the legacy of all our people.”
MUIZENBERG POLICE invites residents of Hillview, Seawinds, Coniston Park, Sheradon Park and Village Heights to an imbizo at the Church of Christ on the corner of Diamond Drive and Military Road on Thursday 21 June at 11:00. Phone Constable Salinda Mdana 0 082 522 2554.

s y a d i l o h c i l b u P national pride or waste of time? TOO LITTLE TIME OFF: Magdalene Cupido feels there are too few public holi days. “We could do with some more pub lic holidays and I would like Ascen sion Day back on the calen dar as a national holiday too.”
THERE is at least one public holiday during eight months on the South African calendar. Nationwide, we commemorate milestones in our political history such as Youth Day, Freedom Day and Human Rights Day. Although these public holidays provide citizens with a sense of patriotism and unites them across different races and cultures, there is no doubt that it has a negative effect on the economy. Government services as well as banks are closed on public holidays, and retail and grocery shops are open for limited hours only. People’s Post polled readers to find out how they felt about the current official calendar.
EQUAL: Dorcas Gorman says there should be equal public holidays for all. “It’s not fair that peo ple of other faiths have to put in leave at work to cele brate their ho ly days. They should be given public holidays like we are given Christmas and Easter.”
LESS THAN IMPRESSED: Michael Casper is not happy with holidays be ing taken away by the govern ment. “I don’t like the fact that the government took away public holidays we grew up with. They don’t include the public when they make these decisions, they just overrule us.”
OVERWOR KED: Morne Rade man says more public holidays should be created to give people “a well earned rest”. “There are hopelessly too few public holidays on our calendar. South Africans are overworked so a good break will do us a world of good.”
WHO DECIDES? Faeza Carelse says there are too little pub lic holidays. “A few more wouldn’t hurt,” says Carelse. “I would also like to know how and who de cides on what we as citizens are al lowed to cele brate nation wide.”
A DAY FOR OUR FURRY FRIENDS: Madri Prince says if she had the power to introduce a public holiday she would do something for pets. “I would promote anticruelty towards animals. Making a pub lic holiday of it would definitely create awareness.”
TOO MANY: Anelisa Bokuva says there are more than enough public holidays. “We don’t need any more public holidays; there are enough already. One which stands out for me is Heritage Day. I think it’s one of the most important days of celebration in our country.”
Photos: Summer Jacobs
WASTE OF VALUA BLE HOURS: Sin clair Swartz says the coun try is wasting precious hours on pub lic holidays. “Our country is already in an economic crisis. All the public holi days hampers it further. We lose too many hours by being un productive.”

Marching for better policing TASMIN CUPIDO
MORE than 700 residents of the greater Retreat area joined forces against inadequate policing last Friday, when they took to the streets in a peaceful march. Armed with posters and a loud speaker, the large group brought affected communities such as Lavender Hill, Hillview, St Montague’s Village and Capricorn to a standstill as they protested against poor service delivery from both Steenberg and Muizenberg police stations. While this is not the first time the community has taken this route to make their voices heard, organiser Lucinda Evans of Phalisa Abafazi-Bethu believes their demands will be taken seriously this time. “The fact that we were able to stop traffic in Military Road for more than 40 minutes and that the communities stopped what they were doing and joined us, is testimony to the fact they have had enough,” she says. The list of demands from the community includes better policing in areas falling within the Steenberg and Muizenberg police precincts; adequate visible policing in informal settlements; better handling of domestic violence and sexual assault cases; a joint imbizo with Steenberg and Muizenberg police, Metro police and organisations in the affected communities; better victim empowerment programmes from the provincial Department of Social Development and to have the army deployed in areas heavily affected by the continuous gang violence. “We need the joint imbizo to be held for us to plan a strategy to fight these ills the community is faced with daily,” Evans says. “And the army needs to be deployed as soon as possible. We have been plagued with continuous shooting sprees between rival gangs for too long. The army needs to be de-
ADAMANT PROTESTER: Mabel Martin (57) from St Montague’s Village during the peace ful protest. ployed here for at least six months. They need to be here day and night. This fighting must stop!” Evans claims police visibility was extremely high at the weekend – after the march. “On Friday and Saturday everywhere you looked, you saw police vans and officers from both Steenberg and Muizenberg police stations, and even the Metro police,” she says. “But on Sunday the visibility decreased and there was another shooting in Dover Court in Lavender Hill. This is just a testimony as to what the police presence means.” Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hermanus van Dyk confirmed that the protesters handed over a memorandum demanding better service delivery to Captain Michael Rhoodie. “The station commissioner and head of crime prevention is looking into the matter,” he said. Captain Stephen Knapp, spokesperson for Muizenberg police confirms they have received the memorandum and it is currently with the station commander.

A little ray of sunshine for Levana LILLIAN AMOS
HOVERING winter clouds were kept at bay when an organisation stepped up to provide some Lavender Hill school pupils with a bit of sunshine. The South African National Zakah Fund (Sanzaf) launched their seasonal ‘Operation Winter Warmth’ at Levana Primary on Tuesday. They provided more than a 1 000 learners with a warm meal, some winter gear, lamps and other goodies. Sanzaf representative Sakeena Bock says they chose the school because of the need in the community. “We identified it as a needy school because it is right in the heart of a poverty-stricken community faced with adverse social issues such as gangsterism and unemployment.” The excitement on the children’s faces clearly showed when they saw the Sanzaf vehicles pulling into the school grounds. Principal Ivor Noble says many of his pupils come to school hungry every day and depend on a meal from the Peninsula School Feeding Association. “These children have the odds stacked against
them. They come from impoverished homes. They come to school hungry and with tattered clothes.” However, Noble says the school has been blessed with people who care, like Sanzaf. “This helps us as teachers to fight for the children and it shows them there is good in coming to school. Many of these children are sucked into thinking that school has no benefit, but with organisations like Sanzaf, it shows them we as teachers care, and other people care about them as well,” says Noble. The theme for this year’s ‘Operation Winter Warmth’ is “growing young people” with the aim to support young people to move from dependency to independency, says Muallimah Yasmine Abdulrazak from the organisation. “We do not want them to live their life depending on handouts,” After singing some hymns and doing some fun Sanzaf drills, the rain came down, but it couldn’t keep the smiles from the children’s faces. Ruweidah Jansen, a Grade 5 pupil, says she loves her winter pack. “I asked my mommy to buy me gloves because my hands freeze in the morning, but she said I will have to wait till there is money,” says the girl. “Now I have gloves, a beanie and a scarf!”.
WARM AND TOASTY: Pupils couldn’t wait to try on their winter wear. They were given beanies, scarfs, gloves, a blanket and food.

Judge on merit THE newly-appointed police chief is a woman. She has never worked as a police officer. And she is black. These are three counts some may use against Mangwashi Riah Phiyega. Should the preferred candidate have been male? Would the right person for the job have been a former police officer who had come through the ranks? And which sector of South African society should such an individual have represented? Not counting those of foreigners, there are 11 official languages in SA. Not counting immigrants – illegal or otherwise – an estimated 50 million people live in this country. SA is a country on the cusp of realising its economic leap out of the ‘emerging market’ cocoon. It simply has to – else the work post1994 may have been for nought. As part of the main players among the emerging market nations Brics – Brazil, Russia, India, China and SA – it is hoped new blood will oil the wheels of these economies. New inroads into economies – rich or battling – bring with it potential for wealth. Opportunity for crime is not far behind. The new top cop knows she has much to do, not least of which to quell concerns of her ability to do her job. In a country where poverty and wealth seemingly converge to provide world criminals a haven of opportunity, the difficulties of any police chief cannot be ignored. Obscuring the facts of crime statistics may silence the skeptics for only so long. Phiyega has shown she is not afraid to confront the issues of those questioning her abilities. In her introduction to the populace she made this clear. Even if it is true you don’t need to be a drunk to own a bottle store, her success rate should be the decider. SA, take up the challenge to judge her on her ability to learn in 12 months.
A debate to get teeth into Always there for the community I AM just an ordinary community advisor to the people of the Cape Flats. I use the term ‘Cape Flats’ because I consult with diverse communities and struggling families. The Lavender Hill Youth Community Outreach and Development Project gets no financial support – despite doing great work and support. Getting this support is vital in sustaining such a project. I believe it is the power invested in you, by God, and your passion – supported with compassion and transparency – that makes you do such work. I am never one to not complain or ask for handouts to host a project. I tackle all problems head-on, with the hope of bettering the lives of our struggling communities. I always put the community and children ahead of myself. I motivate myself with prayers and often have conversations with God. This is what makes me seem so independent and well off. I get the strangest requests for assistance and support, but I really don’t always have to give. Even though I would like to help, I do not always have the means to do so.
Requests include assistance to pay school fees; support and financial assistance to bury a resident; requests for food parcels and assistance with Letters of Demand for rental arrears. I have been asked whether the organisation could borrow or donate funds to assist with these matters. As an individual I don’t have the capacity to assist each day. However, I can pick up a phone and help where I can. Sometimes I also go to bed with nothing to eat, but I always try to make a difference in the lives of those who approach me for help. I don’t have a car – I walk or take the taxi to where I want to be. I also have friends who make sure I don’t go to bed without a meal. This organisation will continue doing its supportive work, with or without monies, because money is a silent object which creates unpleasantness. I was a nothing in your eyes at the polling stations last year, because of my beliefs and my sexual orientation. I will always be Clive Jacobs and no tsunami will get rid of me. I will always be there for my community. CLIVE ALEX JACOBS Lavender Hill
More deaf people must walk I AM deaf. At age of 54, I was thrilled to do the big walk. I came second in the 10km in one hour and eight minutes. It is a pity to have missed the koeksister, but if I ate it, my stomach would cramp because of the fast walk. The routes were beautiful. Thanks to the marshals. Luckily the
weather was nice. Next time, more deaf people must take part in the big walk and learn about the slave heritage. GARETH HOLMES Wetton Letter edited. – Ed
THE media hype surrounding the R10 Steers rib burger and Brett Murray’s controversial painting, The Spear, had me thinking. We, as civil society, provide the press and brand marketing agencies with so much senseless fodder to engage in superfluous debate, unnecessarily escalating our blood pressure. But it does get the creative juices flowing. If Nandos can do it – and they have been at it for years – then so can Steers. Their opposition should follow up with a R10 Steers “Rip Off” Burger! Does being politically correct not apply to the fast food marketing industry and art world? Me thinks that KFC, St Elmos, Debonairs or Wimpy may be waiting in the
Your SMSes . Somali shop owners, please do something about the beggars at your shops. DC, Retreat . Lots of ills and vices are taking place in the Retreat and Lavender Hill area – and now the killing of two children. It’s time for parents to move forward with boldness on community issues. Let the councillors get the things we urgently need in our area. They fail to ask for it at subcouncil or full council level. Let our people get faith in you soon. Ebie, Retreat . I thought the editor would protect her readers from these hocus pocus doctors, but choose instead to protect them. It’s clearly good income for these adverts, but remember their money is from ill-gotten gains. Shame on People’s Post. . . Christian holidays: The anti-
wings (pardon the pun) with a similar controversial ad campaign to derive free publicity, titillating our tongues to start wagging! My mouth waters in anticipation. If that is the case, then the Princess Vlei Forum needs a fast food outlet to come alongside this serious and topical public issue, such as the Save Princess Vlei Campaign to derive the urgent exposure required. How about Mr Delivery doing an ad campaign synonymous with President Jacob Zuma’s cabinet re-shuffle, and focusing on service delivery? I should get paid for such creative ingenuity! Any offers? SIXTH SUPPLEMENTARY VALUATION TO THE 2009 GENERAL VALUATION ROLL (SV06) FOR THE FINANCIAL YEAR 2012/2013 Notice is hereby given in terms of section 49 (1)(a)(i) of the Local Government: Municipal Property Rates Act, 2004 (Act no. 6 of 2004), hereinafter referred to as the “Act,” that the Sixth Supplementary Valuation Roll to the 2009 General Valuation Roll (SV06) for the financial year 2012/2013 is open for public inspection at the venues as stated below as from 21 June 2012 until 31 July 2012. The forms for the lodging of objections are obtainable at these venues. In addition the valuation roll is available on the Council website as from 21 June 2012 (the address is provided below).
SINGER and rising star, Mario Ogle, will do a two week Cape Town tour to promote his new radio single, Crazy, from his album Superman. He will perform at Club Galaxy on Thursday 21 June at 22:00. The last two years have seen Ogle’s music career explode. His debut album, Can’t stop loving you, has just been certified gold by the Recording Industry of SA for sales in excess of 20 000 copies – a great achievement for a local artist. The album was nominated for a South African Music Award. A few months ago, Ogle released his new album, Superman, and the title track became a big hit on Kfm, Heart 104.9 FM, Goodhope FM and other radio stations across the country. The music video has aired on TV and features special effects such as Ogle ‘flying’ through space. Most of the songs on Superman were written or co-written by Ogle. The album features several upbeat, feelgood dance tracks, some soulful ballads and a semi-acoustic version of the Bee Gees song How deep is your love, which is proving to be very popular. The song Techno fancy deals with how, despite the social media networks, two people can still be alienated from each other. Ogle’s music is starting to feature internationally as well. He was recently in Singapore, where his tracks are doing well on two Singapore radio stations. He also writes songs for other artists such as Chad Saaiman. The track, Bang X2, is a hit and is doing well on radio stations in Cape Town. Fans can view his music videos on YouTube, and keep up to date with him on Facebook and Twitter. For further information contact Alan on 082 784 8109.
Properties were selected to appear on the Sixth Supplementary Valuation Roll to the 2009 General Valuation Roll (SV06) Roll in terms of section 78(1) of Act if the property a) was incorrectly omitted from the Valuation Roll; b) has been included in the municipality after the last general valuation; c) has been subdivided or consolidated after the last general valuation; d) has undergone a substantial increase or decrease in market value since the last general valuation; e) was substantially incorrectly valued in the last general valuation; f) must be revalued for any other exceptional reason; g) of which the category has changed. In terms of Section 49(1)(a)(ii) of the Act, any property owner or person who so desires may lodge an objection with the municipal manager in respect of any matter reflected in, or omitted from the valuation roll, within the abovementioned period. Objections may only be lodged in respect of properties valued on the SV06 Roll. The owners of these properties will be notified of their SV06 valuations in writing at the postal address currently held on the City’s database. Attention is specifically drawn to the fact that in terms of section 50(2) of the Act an objection must be in relation to a specific individual property and not against the supplementary valuation roll as a whole. The forms for lodging an objection can be obtained from one of the venues listed below, and can be downloaded from the website. A separate objection form must be completed per property. False Bay hover above drop zone FALSE BAY rugby club are in danger of being sucked into the relegation mire after losing their sixth match this season over the weekend. The Constantia-based club currently occupy seventh place on the Super League A table after gaining a total of 14 points from the nine games they have played this year. False Bay hosted Skotschekloof Walmers at Philip Herbstein on Saturday and should have been well rested and brimming with confidence after winning two games on the trot before their bye the weekend before last. The home side started off better than their opponents and it seemed as if everything was going to plan when flyhalf Stef Swanich opened the scoring after only two minutes of play. However, the visitors weren’t reading from the same script and they took the lead six minutes later when wing Ghafoer Luckan collected a chip kick into the goal area to score. False Bay replied two minutes later with a drop goal from Swanich to regain the lead, but this would be the last time they had an advantage on the score board. The hosts could not keep up with Skotschekloof’s high intensity game and their defence was breached again in the 15th minutes when Zahier Ryland cut through their line and put through a well-timed chip. Openside flanker, Kuselo Moyake, collected the ball to score the first of his two tries in the game.
False Bay launched several poor tactical kicks in the game and one lead directly to a try when opposition fullback Wilfred Pieterse gathered the ball and passed to outside centre Danwill Erasmus, who outpaced the home defence to score underneath the posts. SKW started the second half with 14 players after lock Anton Lambrechts was sin-binned in the 38th minute of the first half, but continued scoring with two penalties early on. Adnaan Osman seemingly put the game to rest when he scored Skotschekloof’s fourth try in the 20th minute of the second half. But the try seemed to lift False Bay and they started their fightback five minutes later with a try, and then claimed another in the 35th minute. It seemed as if False Bay were on their way to staging a momentous comeback, but SK Walmers replied almost immediately with a try from Moyake to put the result beyond doubt. The game finished with the score at 39-21 to SKW. In hindsight, False Bay’s bye the weekend before last seemed to break their momentum rather than provide them with much needed rest. They will have another break this weekend before entering a difficult run of games that will see them play two sides to whom they lost to in April. False Bay host Durb-Bell, who beat them 23-7 on Friday 29 June, then play Hamiltons – who won the reverse fixture 49-3 in Greenpoint on Saturday 7 July. They will then face SK Walmers again on Saturday 14 July.
CHARGE: False Bay outside centre Stuart Patterson bursts through a tackle from Schotschekloof Walmers eighthman, Jody Birch, during a Super League A match at Philip Herbstein in Constantia on Saturday. The hosts lost the game 3921. Photo: Liam Moses

Penalties decide Kenpark final LIAM MOSES
THE Kenpark U23 Arising Stars tournament came to a thrilling end on Sunday night when penalties were needed to separate Woodlands United and Glendene FC in the final of the competition. Both teams went into the tournament with significant advantages over the other amateur sides who took part. Therefore their presence in the final was not that surprising. Woodlands United were able to call on the experience and quality of the coach and seven of the players who helped them win the Dulux Intercommunity Cup recently. Glendene boasted the steadying hand of the coach who guided their first team to a thirdplace finish in the Vodacom League, the third tier of South African football. The final was a contrast of styles as Glendene played their free, attacking style throughout the tournament while Woodlands preferred to sit back and launch quick counterattacks. However, it was Woodlands who took the lead in the fourth minute when Kyle Simm slotted home a loose ball after a mid-air collision between the Glendene goalkeeper, a defender and a Woodlands attacker in the box. It took only a few minutes for Glendene to restore parity when diminutive striker Faizel Johnson scored after he chased down a neat through-ball. The Mitchell’s Plain side regained the lead early in the second half when Wesley Jassen tapped home a low cross, but Glendene equal-

Glendene’s forwards threatened throughout the rest of the game and the ten minutes of extra time which followed, but neither side could score the winning goal, and penalty kicks were needed to find a winner. In the end, Glendene won the shoot-out and the game, and were crowned champions of
the tournament. Glendene coach Heshaam Ibrahiem says that while he was happy with the victory, the biggest prize his side won was the experience they gained at the tournament. “We came to this tournament to develop our boys, this is our U19 team. We’re giving them a chance to be mentally strong and learn how to cope with the pressure.
“They did really well and they played the style of football we want, with ball possession and counter attacking from the wings and inside. “I’m very happy with the football we played. We did not come to the tournament to win it. We actually came to develop these boys,” Ibrahiem says. The two finalists took vastly different routes on their road to the last match of the tournament, with Glendene scoring 11 goals in their six games and Woodlands scoring just two, drawing all of their games and winning on penalties in all three of their games in the knockout rounds. The Mitchell’s Plain side drew their group games against Bayhill United, Battswood FC and Juventus 0-0 and overcame Strandfontein FC on penalties after another 0-0 draw in the last of 16 match. Woodlands won through on penalties again in the quarter and semi-finals after drawing Leeds Lentegeur and Greenwood Athletic 1-1 respectively. Glendene, meanwhile, scored eight goals in the group stage, beating Stephanian Ottery 3-0 and Junction Rovers 5-0 before losing to Beacon Spurs. They then won all three their knockout games against Heath Athletic, tournament hosts Kenpark United and Mr Price Parkhurst 1-0 in the last 16, quarter-final and semi finals respectively. Juventus won the plate final of the tournament after beating Kensington AFC 1-0. Glendene players Shane Pattersen and Shahied Abrahams also scooped the top goal scorer and player of the tournament awards.
