Wired for Madiba On 11 February 1990 Nelson Mandela was released from prison. In 1995, Madiba vis ited Rosebank, where he made a perma nent impression in an African traditional art vendor’s heart. Since then Charles Bute from Vrygrond has admired Madiba and used this inspiration to work on a three month project to create a bust from mesh wiring of this homegrown international icon. Bute says: “I worked with a vision and reminded myself of what type of president and person Nelson Mandela is. This piece came straight from my heart.” Bute’s neat craftsmanship displays Madiba’s torso, as well as finelycrafted details of his eye brows, lips, mouth and hairline. The piece will be on display in celebration of Mandela Day tomorrow (Wednesday 18 July) in Vry grond. I was ‘arrested, beaten’ LUZUKO ZINI

A RETREAT man alleges he has been a victim of police brutality. Emile Ely (18) alleges he was beaten up by a police officer at Steenberg police station after he was arrested on Saturday afternoon. According to Ely, he was arrested after a constable driving in a police van called him and asked where he lives. Ely says: “I was walking with a friend in 12th Avenue when police pulled up next to us. One of the policemen asked me where I live. I told them and continued to walk away.” As he walked away, says Ely, he “heard the

cop calling for back-up and in no time about six vans pulled up and the cops manhandled me and pushed me inside the van”. Ely’s friend Curshwin Linnet says he witnessed everything. “As the police were handling him, community members had gathered and were shouting and asking police to let him go because he did nothing,” Linnet says. Ely was detained overnight and says his family was not allowed to see him. His family was told on Sunday of his arrest for assaulting a policeman and resisting arrest. Ely alleges he was assaulted during the night.

“The same policeman who arrested me is the one who beat me up,” he says. Linnet’s father, Neil Cloete, says he called a lawyer to get Ely out of the police cells. Cloete says a Sergeant Witbooi assisted them on Sunday morning after they could not get any clarity from the constables on duty in the charge office. “After we (Cloete and Ely’s family) were told we could not see him on Saturday night, I returned on Sunday morning with a lawyer,” says Cloete. “This is when Sergeant Witbooi told me he would drop the charges.” Gayle Ely, Emile’s grandmother, says they have not laid a charge against the police.

“We have not opened a case against the police, but we are waiting on Sergeant Witbooi to get back to us and tell us on the way forward if we want to lay a charge,” she says. Warrant officer Hermanus van Dyk, of the Steenberg police, says Ely has to lay a charge. “At this stage I can not give comment because no-one has laid a charge,” Van Dyk says. Cloete believes Ely should lay charges. “He should lay charges because he can’t let the police get away with this,” he says. The police watchdog the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is responsible for conducting investigations against police officers.

Tuesday 17 July 2012

Happy birthday, Tata Madiba Dear reader, Tomorrow is Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday and all of us at People’s Post wish Madiba a happy birthday. Once characterised by fanfare and lavish celebrations, this special day took on new meaning when, four years ago, Madiba urged the world to instead perform acts of charity on his birthday. Since known as Mandela Day and recognised by the United Nations, on this day people around the world are called on to volunteer for a good cause for 67 minutes; each

minute representative of each year of Madiba’s life in active politics. Of these 67 years, the anti-apartheid icon was incarcerated for 27 years. He was released in 1990 and played a leading role in effecting democratic elections in 1994, becoming the country’s first black president. Besides being revered globally for his personal sacrifices, Madiba won hearts with his warmth, dignity, humility and spirit of reconciliation. The sacrifices made by Madiba and others who fought apartheid should be remembered

as a reminder of how precious our democracy is and the opportunities it has brought to millions who once lived under oppressive laws such as the Group Areas Act, which in 1966, saw areas such as District Six being declared a whites-only area. Between 1968 and 1982, the more than 60 000 residents of District Six were relocated, mostly to townships. All the houses were bulldozed, leaving behind only mosques, churches and some schools; and reducing the history of a once vibrant community to stories, photos, books, newspaper clippings and theatre productions Many formerly displaced District Six resi-

dents cannot but be nostalgic when paying homage to Madiba on his birthday, and all he represents in our country’s past and how it translated among ordinary people. The realities of race laws cut close to home. I was 10 when I first tasted tear gas at Sydney Street Primary School. Our teachers sent us home, where more tear gas and a street lined with armed police awaited us. We could barely see through the acrid smoke and our tears. High school was no different and because our school, Harold Cressy High, was in the city, we got special attention from the riot police. The move from District Six literally split our family; my mother, her sister and brother lived alongside one another. Along with the pain and loss apartheid inflicted, is the part that defies logic such as my mom’s stories about her and her sisters frequenting “whites only” hair salons and other facilities because they “looked white”. Before my political awakening, and through my childhood’s eyes, I found it amusing to see yet another half-naked white man being hauled out of a house occupied by lightskinned “coloured” prostitutes, mixed race couples kissing publicly as they visited family in “The District” and my family’s few white friends driving from Obs to our house nearly every Saturday for curry and roti. We all have special memories of our past, both happy and sad. Sometimes an event triggers these recollections, as the eve of Madiba’s birthday has for me. I reflect on this chapter in my history with respect. ’Til next time, go well! Tuesday 17 July 2012 CONDOLENCES: Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa hugs a family member of Zun aid Mckenzie.

No trust in police LUZUKO ZINI

A LACK of trust in the police has the community of Lavender Hill crying out for the army’s help to stop the furore of gang violence. Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Kevin Southgate tells People’s Post the community has lost trust in the police. “The reason people want the army to intervene is because they have lost trust in the police,” Southgate says. “It is a desperate plea from them to have peace restored in the affected communities.” However, Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa feels differently. “We can’t just bring in the army and start shooting at gangs. The army has live ammunition and if they are brought in, shootouts between them and gangs may occur. We don’t want to risk the

chance of innocent people being killed,” Mthethwa commented during a visit to Lavender Hill on Wednesday. But, adds Mthethwa: “The police alone can’t do anything, they need the assistance of the community.” Southgate concurs, saying the police and the community should work together. “The police needs to do their work. Only then will the community trust them,” he says. Mthethwa also visited the home of eightyear-old Zunaid Mckenzie who was killed while playing outside his home in Steenberg during an alleged gang shootout two weeks (“Wrong place at wrong time”, People’s Post, 3 July).

Jubilee Celebration

Newly-appointed National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega, who accompanied Mthethwa, commented that the community must play their role in the combating of the senseless crimes. “The families and community need to play their role by reporting crimes, so that police can do something about it,” she said. Southgate agrees that bettering the situation is in the hands of the community. “Different government stakeholders need to come to the party, but we, as community leaders, must encourage the community to stand up and help the police in any way possible. The gangs should not be allowed to take over our communities. Together with the police, we need to act now.” Mthethwa also admitted that the police need to step up their game.“We, as the police, will have to increase our investigative unit and visibility, so that we are able to stop the gang violence.”

Doing your bit RAMADAAN is a time for reflection, prayer and fasting. In this time Muslims should gain a better understanding of and appreciation for the suffering of impoverished and hungry people around the world. It is a time when observers are reminded about the importance of charity, and their obligation to be charitable throughout the year. This year, Islamic Relief’s Ramadaan campaign focus on the distribution of iftaar (breaking evening fast) and fitrah (gestures of goodwill) in impoverished communities in South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mali, Somalia, Kenya, Palestine, Yemen and Lebanon. According to National Programmes manager, Sherifa Mia, the humanitarian organisation hopes to make the lives of widows, orphans, the aged, destitute, the physically challenged and refugees easier over this period. “The Ramadaan programme is designed to complement longer-term relief and development projects that provide sustainable assistance in improving living conditions,” says Mia. Iftaar and fitrah food parcels – valued at R400 – consists of basic food items, such as rice, lentils and oil, and often also sugar, canned fish and meat, and dates. Food is procured locally within each country. Support Islamic Relief’s Ramadaan campaign by sponsoring any of the following items: . From R50 Orphan Winter Tracksuits / Orphan Winter Pack (Beanie, Scarf, Gloves) . From R100 Orphan iftaar programme (towards expenses of event) Orphan Eid Clothes . Pavilion revival hopes dim LAILA MAJIET

HOPES of reviving Strandfontein Pavilion have been dealt a blow after provincial government didn’t include the local landmark in its initial plans of a R100 million development. The overhaul includes cruises, ferry trips, shops, restaurants, nightclubs and taverns along the False Bay coast between Gordon’s Bay and Cape Point. Whether the Strandfontein Pavilion will be revived as part of this development is yet to be seen as provincial minister for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, says the exact specifics of the development will only be finalised once an agreement between national government, provincial government and the City of Cape Town is reached. The Strandfontein Boating Associations’ Igshaan Carstens is disgruntled that enough emphasis is not being placed on the development of the suburb. “We have a white elephant in our midst – the Strandfontein Pavilion – which used to be a hive of activity. There was a snake park, restaurants and lots of activities there. Now it is just a building. Money needs to be invested into our community too. “The pavilion needs to be resurrected. We stay on the same coastline as those in Kalk Bay and Gordon’s Bay, but there is no development happening here,” he says. Strandfontein residents had high hopes that their community would be a part of the earmarked project in 2010 when a staggering R100 million had been set aside by the Urban Renewal Project (URP) for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) with the aim of unlocking the development potential of the Mitchell’s Plain coastline. People’s Post reported on the development (“Harbour on cards for M’ Plain”, 10 August 2010) when it was re-

vealed that over R103m had gone into the revitalisation of Monwabisi Beach, which residents felt was needed at Strandfontein Pavilion as well. Carstens says many fishermen use Strandfontein Beach yet the beach has no jetty. “People come here to fish, but they can’t go out on the water as there is no jetty. The community must get what is due to them in accordance with what has been given to our neighbours.” The development aims to link Kalk Bay, Muizenberg and Gordons Bay. Winde says the seaside development could “inject new life and generate greater returns” for the tourism sector. Carstens argues that “Muizenberg and Kalk Bay is alive as money has already been injected in to those areas, but not in to [their] community”. The Strandfontein Ratepayers’ Association chairperson Leonard Jacobs echoes Carsten’ sentiments. “We want developments in Strandfontein. These upgrades are for tourists and not necessarily for the benefit and enjoyment of locals. We have been side-lined way too often,” he says. Upgrades on Monwabisi Beach have already begun and when asked why there is a need for such a development, Winde said “the specified area could do with a boost to increase tourism numbers, as it holds great potential”. Carstens questions residents’ idle approach to being side-lined. “Are we going to sit by idly and let another opportunity to uplift ourselves out of this drudgery of unemployment and social standing pass us by? “We better wake up and mobilise ourselves or else we will only get the crumbs,” he says. Winde says affected communities will have the opportunity to engage with government regarding this project.

Be on the alert for conman TARRENLEE HABELGAARN

PLUMSTEAD and Southfield residents are urged to be on the lookout for a conman who claims there is a fault on residents’s cars. A Plumstead couple told People’s Post the man targeted them twice – first the husband alone in Plumstead, then the couple in Southfield. Their names are being withheld for the couple’s safety. The husband said the conman is a “respectable man known as Jeremy”. He claimed to be a “Grassy Park resident, while pretending there was something wrong with our car”. The first encounter occurred when the husband went to the shop. When he went back to his car, it was dead. The alleged conman approached the husband, saying “a puff of smoke was coming from under the bonnet” of his car.

The husband opened the bonnet for the conman to investigate. During this time, the conman pretended to check the wiring. He then said he found a fault with the wiring. The conman allegedly showed the husband a coil, which the husband now believes to have been a part the conman had removed from the car. The conman told the husband he worked at a second-hand car parts shop nearby and offered to buy “a new part”. The husband believes the conman also operates in Southfield. He did not open a case, but reported the incident to the Diep River police. Diep River police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Clive Muller, urges the public to open a case when such incidents occur. “Criminal cases are investigated, a complaint is not. If the public does not open a case, we cannot keep track of what is going on in the community or notice a trend.”

The Haven Night Shelter provides temporary shelter to the homeless in and around Retreat. It was established in 2006 by community members who saw the need to assist the homeless. The shelter has now become a second home to many. The areas the shelter caters for include Steenberg, Grassy Park and Lavender Hill. The shelter provides three meals a day and clothing to indigent people. The shelter has 16 rooms and can accommodates 76 people. The shelter targets people between the ages of 21 and 60, some of whom come from other shelters. Carmen Hermanus, manager of the shelter, says even though they provide temporary shelter there are some individuals who have been at the shelter for over a year. “We have people who have been here for

two years because this has become home for them,” Hermanus says. Shadley Matthews, who has been living at the shelter for two years, says he has grown and learnt to become independent during his stay. “I ran away from home because I did not like the way I was treated at home by my mother and stepfather,” says Matthews. Since going to the shelter, he says, he has “learnt to believe in myself and I am happy here. I feel at home and there is no other place for me to go to”. Hermanus says the shelter needs more than just money to make the shelter run optimally. “We need perishable and non-perishable foods during this winter, but any donation is welcome.” “We also help old age homes and other shelters by assisting them with basic needs, such as food and clothing we get from the public,” she says. The shelter also assists with social welfare issues like ID and pension applications. A social worker is also available and provides individual and group counselling.

Should the army step in?

THERE is still uncertainty over whether the army will be deployed to quell gang violence flare-ups in townships. Shootings have killed at least 23 people. Premier Helen Zille has reportedly written to President Jacob Zuma appealing for the

army to be sent in, especially to Lavender Hill and Hanover Park. But Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has reportedly said the army does not have the equipment to fight gangsterism. People’s Post readers shared their opinions with Luzuko Zini and Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn.

IT MUST HAPPEN: Anthonina Gelden huys says this is the last resort and could be the solu tion. “I believe nothing else will work except the army because the police need the help. Innocent people are killed because of these gangs.”

CRIME DROPS: Prim rose Fihle believes crime in the gangin fested areas drop when the army is on patrol in such are as. She adds that the people seem to respect the army more and they are more in control than the police. “The ar my is the army. Who is more powerful than them?”

CONTROL: Brinsley Achilles says the army will be able to control these places and bring peace. “It will be best for the situation, be cause now it’s totally un safe. The army will be able to con trol the violence and stop the drug lords from using young children in their fights.”

SENSE OF SECURITY: Peter John Baatjies says it is all about security. “It will be a good thing be cause the com munity will feel a sense of securi ty and the chil dren can play outside like chil dren in other places because they will not fear for their lives. The gangs will also be scared.”

CT gets it’s vibe back! THE city is buzzing with rumours about it’s most loved clubbing brand...and we have the inside information right here! On Saturday 20 October Club Vibe presents Once upon a time... the best 12 hours of your life at the Cape Town International

Convention Centre (CTICC) from 14:00 until 02:00. The venue will be transformed into a multifloor fantasy playground for the first time in it’s history. Call 0 (021) 424 0299 or 2 welcome@clubvibe.co.za or visit www.clubvibe.co.za.

TOO MUCH CRIME: Anthonyo Kanyinda feels the army should definitely be brought in to help the crime situa tion in Lavender Hill, especially with gangsterism because there are too many criminals in the area already. “They need to bring in the people who are going to better the living standards of the residents.”

Photos:TarrenLee Habelgaarn and Luzuko Zini

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH: S Bento stresses the po lice have had more than enough time to deal with the crime sit uation, yet nothing has come of it. “If the army can do something about it they should be al lowed to inter vene. The police have had years to do something about the sit uation yet it seems the crime rate is in creasing and not decreasing.”

NOT TRUSTED: Rushdi Kippie says he does not feel the police can be trusted. Their at tempts to help, he says, has hardly achieved anything and some officers could even be on gangster pay roll. “The police do nothing. (Criminals) give them money and (they’re) off the hook.”

VIOLENCE AGAINST VIO LENCE: Di Bul loch says the army is dif ferent from police and is more powerful. “The army is used to fighting wars and will be per fect there. We also need to find other solutions like creating jobs be cause if those gangs had jobs I don’t think they would be part of gangs.”

HAVE A LAUGH: Capetonians are in for a comedy treat as some of the biggest names in SA comedy come together for a one night only. The fundraising event is to help fellow comedian Rustum Au gust feel the love. As one of the found ers the Starving Comics, he can be credited with restarting the club come dy circuit in Cape Town and, more im portantly, keeping it going. A voracious promoter, he has been sorely missed since being diagnosed with Acute Mye loid Leukemia in May. The current prog nosis is good, but as he has no medical aid, he requires R90 000 for an opera tion on his lungs to hopefully save his life. Corne and Twakkie (Louw Venter and Rob van Vuuren), Stuart Taylor, Siv Ngesi, Tracey Klaas, Oliver Booth, Mar tin Davis and Brendan Murray will ‘make you laugh so hard it falls out your pock ets’. Tickets at R350 includes canapes and refreshments, with only 160 tickets available for the show, at the Beautiful Life Building in Bree Street. Doors open at 18:00 and the show starts at 19:00. Tickets from Marie Vogts at marie@ybafricanculture.com or (021) 424 0074.

Running to celebrate women LIAM MOSES

THOUSANDS of Capetonians will celebrate Women’s Day in a healthier way when they participate in the Women’s Day Challenge on Thursday 9 August. The race will see thousands of men, women and children take to the streets of Bellville for either a 10km run or a five km fun run. According to race convenor Steve McCarthy the aim of the race is to make women feel special and provide women and their families with healthy way to celebrate the day. “It’s a good day to get out. We encourage

mothers to bring their children – prams are also welcome, while the husbands are also welcome” said McCarthy. The race, which was started more than a decade ago, will start at outside the Bellville Athletics Stadium and venture out onto the streets before finishing inside the stadium. Everyone participating will receive a medal and those who participate in the 10km race also stand a chance of winning prizes. The first five finishers in the 10km race will win gold medals, those who finish between sixth and 50th place will win silver medals and everyone else who finishes before the cutoff time will receive bronze medals. All racers in then 10km event also stand

MOTHER Nature had the final say when the Knysna Forest marathon and half marathon had to be cancelled due to stormy weather on Saturday. In the early hours of Saturday morning race organisers decided to call off the race for safety reasons. It would have been the 29th running of the popular race. “It was an easy decision to make, but it was made with a heavy heart,” said organiser Leon Brown. “Even the place where runners had to take the taxis to the start was flooded,” he explained. The 8 000 runners who eventually did not participate will however have various options to choose from this weekend. On Saturday 21 July, Strand Athletic Club hosts the Gordon’s Bay half marathon which starts at the Gordon Bay Spur at 07:30. There will also be a 5km fun run starting at 08:00. For more information contact Lester Burrow 0 082 424 8547. On Saturday afternoon the Stragglers Athletic Club presents the sixth Western Province Athletics Cross Country League race in Strandfontein. For more info contact the WPA office 0 (021) 699 0615. On Sunday 22 July In Touch Athletic Club hosts the Voet of the Wine 10 km run and walk, as well as the 5km Fun Run from Zevenwacht Mall in Kuilsrivier. Call Priscilla Williams 0 076 230 4919. a chance of winning one of 28 cash prizes between R250 and R2 000, depending on where they finish. Spot prizes will also be awarded during the prizegiving. The Women’s Day Challenge will also make a positive impact on women who will not be taking part in the race. McCarthy says that the Saarjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children in Klipfontein Road, Athlone has been chosen as the charity partner for the event. “With it being Women’s Day we wanted to go for a women’s charity and we think that’s a worthwhile cause as they are desperate for funding at the moment,” said McCarthy. “They will receive a cash donation. It will

be a percentage of the entries and we have asked runners to make an additional donation as well.” Anyone interested in taking part in the challenge can enter online at www.enteronline.co.za or manually at the Tygervalley or Rondebosch branches of Sportsman’s Warehouse between 10:00 and 17:00 on Saturday 28 July. Entries for the race will close on this day. The first 3 500 entrants will receive a free race t-shirt. For further information about the race www.womensdaychallenge.org.za. Olympians sent off in style LIAM MOSES

THE Western Cape contingent of the South African Olympic team received a warm sendoff at Athlone Stadium last Tuesday. The event was hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and sought to bring together all 35 of the Cape-based athletes, officials and technical staff representing South Africa in London. Unfortunately many of the athletes were away competing or training, but they were represented by family members or officials from their various sporting bodies. The athletes in attendance were ad-

dressed by Lyndon Bouah, chief director of sport and recreation, and then by Dr Ivan Meyer, the department’s MEC. Meyer congratulated the athletes on their achievement and urged them to perform at a higher level at the London games. “When you play sport at a national level you are good. As you sit here you are good, but we want you to go from being good to being great,” said Meyer. “Today we are celebrating our Western Cape athletes because they are moving on to another level of excellence.” The group was also addressed by one of SA’s most famous Olympians Elana Meyer, after watching a medal of her sil-

ver medal performance in the 10 000 metres at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Meyer, who became the first South African woman to bring home an Olympic medal after SA’s readmission to international sport, spoke to the athletes about what the Olympics meant to her. The three-time Olympian also explained to the group what they can expect at this year’s games. Weightlifter Jean Greeff, Dave Roberts, vice president of the Western Cape Executive Sports Council, and Bennett Bailey, DCAS deputy director of sport development, also addressed the guests. All the athletes received bags containing gifts, such as framed Olympic tshirts.

Another loss for False Bay LIAM MOSES

FALSE BAY RFC were on the receiving end of another heavy defeat this weekend, as Schotschekloof Walmers (SKW) outscored the Constantia-based club by seven tries to four. Bay went into Saturday’s game in Green Point on the back of 47-14 drubbing to Hamiltons last week, but had targeted the SKW match as an opportunity to pick up muchneeded log points as they fight to secure their survival in the Super League A. The visitors started the game better than SKW, and opened the scoring with a wellworked try in the ninth minute through former Springboks Sevens player Shandre Frolick. The resulting conversion was goaled, but it would be Bay’s last points in the first half. SKW went on to score three converted tries and a penalty, to lead 24-7 at half-time. SKW scored another four tries and goaled two more penalties in the second half, while Bay scored three tries to secure a crucial bonus point. The game ended 47-24. Bay head coach Chris Hewetson cited a lack of clinical play and a failure to react accordingly to the situation, as his team’s major failings in the game. “I think (we lost because we lacked) urgency at stages and then individual errors. I think SKW used their opportunities better. When they did get the ball their exceptionally ‘pacy’ outside backs showed class,” said Hewetson.

“But, you know, it was an arm wrestle at certain stages, and the okes felt the pressure that you feel when these two teams play.” Hewetson’s side were also guilty of inaccurate tactical kicking in the first half, allowing SKW’s dangerous back three to counter attack. The four-try bonus point will give False Bay a small but critical buffer between themselves and Villager FC, who occupy the second last spot on the table. The victory is the sixth in seven games for SKW and allows them to go into their two month-long Ramadaan-enforced break on a high note, after suffering a defeat against table-toppers Durb-Bell last weekend. Zain Daniels, head coach at SKW, said the team would be looking to continue their winning streak when they return in September. “The primary goal was to win five games so that we could look safe and retain the position on the log,” said Daniels. “After reaching the 30-point mark, you want go on and get beyond the 40. We are taking it one game at a time now. With no disrespect to the other teams, we just feel that we good enough to beat most of the teams we have to play. We not targeting anybody specifically.” SKW are currently in fourth position on the table, with 35 points gained from their 13 games played, but have played between two and four more games than the other teams in the league. Bay faces bottom club Tygerberg at Philip Herbstein on Saturday and should win the game comfortably.

Tackling the world’s best LIAM MOSES

TWO of Grassy Park’s bright, young footballers jet off to China today to participate in one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious youth tournaments. Aghmat Ceres and Waseem Taylor have been playing for Ajax Cape Town for nearly six years – this is their third overseas trip with the team. But this trip could be the toughest of their young careers as they face the best under-15 teams from around the world in the Manchester Premier Cup. Ceres and Taylor will line-up against teams such as hosts Manchester United, Inter Milan, Brazil’s Santos and Argentina’s Boca Juniors. Despite the size of the challenge, neither boy is overawed by the occasion, both believing their team will lift the trophy.“I feel excited because we are going to play against the biggest clubs in Europe and around the world, because they also won the Manchester United tournament in their countries,” says Taylor. “I think we are going to do well. We have the brains here in South Africa, they just have the physical battle. I feel excited to play against the best and they better be prepared for us.” Ceres says he is most excited about having the opportunity to test himself against the host club – who are famed for the success of their youth teams. “I’m most looking forward to Manchester United, because they are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I think we can beat them,” says Ceres. The Premier Cup was started by United in 1993 and has seen 9 000 different teams from 43 countries take part. Each team has to win their regional play-offs to become one of the 20 teams who qualify for the finals.

The Ajax under-15 team beat teams like Vasco de Gama, Santos and Orlando Pirates to secure their place in Beijing, effectively making them the best team in their age group in SA. Since its inception the Premier Cup has been a stepping stone and proving ground for the world’s most talented young players. The likes of Fernando Torres, Cesc Fábregas, Gerard Pique, Xavi Hernandes, Iker Casillas, Andres Iniesta, Carlos Tevez, Robinho and Lionel Messi have all partaken in the tourney. Now Ceres, a right back, and Taylor, a goalkeeper, will be aiming to emulate their heroes. “We are playing against big teams and you never know who is watching you so you might get signed. I want to play in Europe,” says Ceres. “I would like to go play in Europe because you can get more experience and you can get more money. You can build a future in Europe,” says Taylor. Ceres and Taylor are both in grade 10 and attend South Peninsula and Grassy Park high schools respectively. The teams who will participate in this year’s Premier Cup are 2011 champions Pachuca (Mexico), Athletic Club Bilbao (Spain), Boca Juniors (Argentina), Hubei FA (China), Shanghai FA (China), Bangkok Christian College (Thailand), Manchester United, Gamba Osaka (Japan), VfL Bochum (Germany), Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia), Ajax Cape Town, Universidad Catolica (Chile), Santos FC (Brazil), Celtic FC (UK), Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia), Pohang Jecheol Middle School FC (Korea), Keilor Park (Australia), Bursaspor (Turkey), Vardar Soccer Club (USA) and Internazionale FC (Italy). The tournament will take place from Saturday 21 July to Wednesday 25 July.
