RITE OF PASSAGE: “Ibhekile Evuza yo” (“Leaking Calabash”), a lively mu sical with an intensely local flavour, will run from tomorrow (Wednesday) to Saturday at the Artscape Arena, “giving a superb display of the rich ness that is in isiXhosa culture during the Artscape’s Imvelo Festival”, a spokesperson says. Narrated by an old man, the musical looks at how to day’s young isiXhosa men perceive the rites of passage to manhood, and “raises questions in an entertaining way about the initiation practice in modern day South Africa”. Tickets cost R50; student, pensioner and block booking discounts are availa ble. Book through Computicket, or Artscape DialaSeat on (021) 421 7695. Photo: Paul Greenway

Weekend of drugs, guns and ammo MELISSA PAPIER

CRIME prevention operations within the Mitchell’s Plain cluster over the weekend by the police and other law enforcement agencies led to the arrest of over 100 suspects for various crimes, and the confiscation of a haul of drugs, guns and ammunition. Operations started on Friday morning and ended yesterday (Monday). Captain Mugelaine van der Vendt, spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police Station, says that on Friday the Strandfontein police held a tracing operation that led to the arrest of five wanted suspects. “That same day, at 06:00, officers were conducting routine patrols in Dennegeur Avenue, and witnessed two males being robbed. “The officers acted immediately and arrested two men – and confiscated a black plastic toy gun from the one suspect.”

She adds that, while conducting stop-andsearch operations in Strandfontein, officers arrested two people for reckless and negligent driving, as well as for driving under the influence of alcohol. The arrests took place at the corner of Admiral and Spooner Roads, Strandfontein, and in Remus Street, San Remo. Meanwhile, Mitchell’s Plain police arrested 105 people over the weekend on various charges; of these, 41 arrests were made for possession of drugs, three for drunken driving, six for the possession of unlicensed firearms, one for a hijacking case, and 54 for other crimes. On Friday, Metro Police officers raided a known drug house in Korfbal Street, Beacon Valley. During the raid an 18-year-old man was arrested after officers seized 158 bankies of dagga, 42 Mandrax tablets, five 7.62mm rounds, a 9mm round and 26 miscellaneous rounds. “On Saturday, in Weltevreden Avenue,

Rocklands, two men were stopped and searched, and in their possession officers found a packet of tik, 19 Mandrax tablets and R1 100 in cash,” Van der Vendt adds. During routine vehicle patrols, meanwhile, officers arrested several drunk drivers, one of whom was nabbed in Hazeldene Avenue, Portlands. Later on Saturday afternoon, the police attended to a complaint in Waterval Street, Tafelsig, which led to the arrest of two women and three men after officers confiscated drug paraphernalia, as well as a gun and ammunition. Amid a search of the premises, officers found a 9mm CZ-75 whose serial number had been filed off, as well as a magazine, 13 live rounds and four tik lollies. Meanwhile, at the same time in Tulip Street, Lentegeur, officers stopped and searched a man and found in his possession a Rossi .38 Special. A 37-year-old was arrested on the spot.

Van der Vendt adds that foot patrollers in Town Centre also did good work when the officers, acting on a hunch, stopped somebody on the street. They patted him down and found eight packets of tik and 32 stoppe dagga. “It was later discovered that the person is a juvenile, and his parents were requested to visit the police station. A written notice to appear before court was placed in their care,” Van der Vendt says. Patrolling officers also arrested a 25-yearold man in Calypso Square, Town Centre, after confiscating seven units of heroin. All suspects are set to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court soon. • The Mitchell’s Plain police are urgently calling on all people accused of driving under the influence of alcohol after being tested with a Dräger breathalyser to contact Captain Leon Richter or Warrant Officer Jannie van Heerden of the Mitchell’s Plain Detective Unit on (021) 370-2809 or (021) 370-2840.

Take to the mountain

New CEO for Proudly South African LESLIE SEDIBE has been announced the new CEO Proudly South African. He took the reins at the start of the month from Herbert Mkhize, executive director of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac), who held the position of acting CEO at Proudly SA for two years. Sedibe’s appointment comes at a critical time – when government’s Industrial Policy Action Plan 2 (IPAP 2) and the New Growth Path Plan is being actively implemented and buying local is becoming part of South Africa’s biggest push in the race for job creation . A businessman who studied tax law at the University of the Witwatersrand, Sedibe was CEO of the South African Football Association, and served as a director and the legal head of the South African 2010 Fifa World Cup organising committee. In 2009, he was appointed as a director of the interim board of directors of the SABC. “I am honoured to have been offered the job as CEO,” Sedibe says of his appointment by Proudly SA, “and I want our members and our stakeholders to know that I am fully committed to taking the Proudly South African vision forward.” Advocate Dali Mpofu, chairperson of the Proudly South African board, says: “It took us a long time to find the right candidate, as we were looking for a candidate with the right mix of academic qualifications, the right character and a good dose of patriot-

THE Cape Province Mountain Club (CPMC) will celebrate its 80th birthday this year by hosting a Heritage Day hiking challenge for students on Table Mountain. The organisers are hoping that this challenge, which will double as an outreach initiative in which 38 fully-sponsored pupils from various schools will compete against each other in a test of hiking skills, will eventually become an annual event. Teams of two members each – with a limit of 50 teams – will carry a day pack containing essential clothing for all weather conditions, a first aid kit, survival rations, a map, and sufficient food and water for a day on the mountain. Their route will start on Tafelberg Road at the Kloof Nek parking area and proceed up to Kloof Corner Ridge, then towards Platteklip Gorge along the Contour Path, up to the the cable station, then through Echo Valley to the rear of the mountain. Lunch will be served at the CPMC hut, where competitors will also undergo a bag check and hand in a task. After this the teams will continue to Kasteelspoort, then down to the Pipe Track, and return to their starting point at Kloof Nek for a presentation. The event will be marshalled by volunteers from various hiking clubs and independents hikers. All permits have been approved, and disaster management and medical plans are in place. Participants must be fit and fully equipped to hike in weather conditions that can range between extremes. Call Oswald Haupt on 072 603 2156 or email alphavp@vodmail.co.za.

‘I felt sorry for them’ LYNN PRINS

A

FTER a long day at work, all I was looking forward to was getting home. My day had not been one of the rosiest – and having my cellphone stolen didn’t help matters. I was in a taxi on my way home from Town Centre in Mitchell’s Plain on Thursday after 18:00. The taxi paused at a stop known as “Laaste Gang” in Katdoring, Eastridge, and two men came running up to the microbus. There wasn’t enough space for them, and the taxi guard refused to let them in. I, sitting right at the door, watched as they begged the guard to let them in, and I felt sorry for them – they looked innocent enough. Little did I know, but they had other intentions. The young men, most likely in their early twenties, forced themselves into the taxi, hanging out halfway. While all the arguing and shuffling happened, I was listening to music (which I normally never do), and at the same time replying to an SMS that had just came through. In a blink, my phone was gone, and so were the men. The one who had grabbed my phone went so far as to make eye contact with me before he ran off. I sat there in a daze, just staring at them running off. There was nothing I could do – nothing anyone could do. I was very close to tears. One of the pas-

sengers who sat next to me offered me her phone to contact someone. I was in so much shock that I could not even remember the number I wanted to dial. Yes, I know it’s not the best idea to make one’s phone visible in public, but that’s not the point – what upsets me most is that we, as victims, work hard for our belongings, only for someone just to come around and take them away, and that’s not fair. I am grateful that nothing serious happened, though. It could have been much worse. • People’s Post urges all commuters to be very careful when travelling with valuables – it’s often the case that innocent people get hurt. Constable Jerome Voegt, spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police Station, advises commuters “not to use their cellphones while travelling with public transport”. “Commuters should put their cellphones on silent or vibrate when using public transport. “By using their cellphones in public, commuters make themselves vulnerable and easy targets for criminals. Residents become so distracted while using their cellphones, and are unaware of their surroundings.” Voegt also urges people to be more alert when in public, and implores people not to display their cellphones or other valuables in public. “Rather wait until you are in a safe place before using your cellphone. “If it’s really urgent, be alert of your surroundings.”

Get ready for the VOC Festival THE ANNUAL Voice of the Cape (VOC) Festival is once again on the horizon. Described as a “festival with a difference”, the event takes place at the Cape Town Market in Epping from Thursday 29 September to Sunday 2 October, and will feature all the elements that those attending have become accustomed to over the years, including 40 food stalls and a host of others selling items of every type. Market convenor Hassiem Bastra says the big attraction this year will be of the fourwheeled variety to attract the younger generation. The D1S Drift Squad, a team of historically disadvantaged South Africans who specialise in advanced driving, will show off their skills and also put their modified machines on display for the public to get a closer look. The squad has been in existence for three years, and apart from showing off their advanced driving sequences, they’ll highlight the dangers of illegal street racing and drunken driving. Bastra says the festival will also feature other car-related events – including a show

and shine, sound-off, rev-off, park-off and bakkie-off – and there will be prizes up for grabs for members of the public who participate. Entry forms will be available at Mag Addiction in Strandfontein or on the VOC website from Thursday 22 September. The registration fees range from R50 to R100, depending on the event. Bastra adds that there will also be an Umrah package giveaway, courtesy of Shafiq’s Travel and Tours. People can nominate themselves or another worthy candidate to be the recipient of the once-in-a-lifetime trip. The fully-paid package is valid for Umrah in April 2012. “An Umrah trip is an amazing gift, especially for someone who has never visited the two most important sites in the life of a Muslim.” Anyone interested should retain their entry ticket to the festival, fill in an entry form and drop it off at the VOC lounge at the corporate exhibition. Bastra says the draw will take place at the festival on Sunday 2 October. Terms and conditions apply. Entry to the festival costs R20 for adults, while children and pensioners pay R10. Parking costs R10 per car.

Women of power WOMEN of the Tafelsig United Aids project were spoilt rotten and commemorated earlier this month during the organisation’s belated Women’s Month celebration. The event, held at the Thusong Centre in Tafelsig, featured various guests who spoke about their lives, what they have been through and how they have been empowered.

The joint event, arranged by the Tafelsig East Subforum and the Mustadafin Foundation, aimed to prove to women that they can get out of abusive relationships if they want to, and encourage them to be strong, and love and respect themselves. Certificates were handed out to women who had broken the silence and cycle of abuse, and policewomen also received certificates for completing a sewing skills training programme.

School is beacon of literacy MITCHELL’S PLAIN’s Beacon View Primary School is the proud 2011 winner of the Growsmart literacy competition, which was held at the Townhouse Hotel and Conference Centre last Thursday in honour of International Literacy Day. Beacon View Primary has won school improvements to its to the value of R160 000, and the three children in the winning team will each receive R20 000 towards their future education. There was great excitement when the prize was handed over to Beacon View principal Magda Esterhuizen by Jewel Harris, assistant regional manager of Growthpoint Properties. “This is truly amazing,” said Esterhuizen. “These three students have worked very, very hard to win this prize, and we are so proud of them. We plan to buy books to add to our library, build a computer centre for the kids, build a school hall, add interactive whiteboards into the classrooms, and construct a preschool play park with a jungle gym. Thank you, Growthpoint Properties, for making life better for our learners.” The Growsmart literacy competition is a corporate social investment initiative aimed at improving literacy, launched in 2010 by Growthpoint Properties and endorsed by the Western Cape Education Department. The competition kicked off earlier this year with 120 primary schools competing in the opening rounds. Says Harris: “We have realised that this competition is about so much more than lit-

eracy. It’s a terrific confidence booster for the participants, and the good that comes from Growsmart has certainly exceeded our wildest expectations.” The six schools to survive the elimination rounds and qualify for participation in the final were Zerilda Park Primary (Lavender Hill), Beacon View Primary, Silverlea Primary (Athlone), Windermere Primary (Kensington), Dennemere Primary (Blackheath) and Delft Primary (Delft). Each school was represented by a team of three students from Grades 4, 5 and 6. Quizmaster and host Soli Philander managed to keep the children focused and relaxed while they competed for points by spelling, defining and constructing sentences, all before an excited audience of teachers, mentors, parents, supporters and friends. Zerilda Park Primary came second and Delft Primary came third. The event was attended by alderman Ian Nielson, Cape Town deputy mayor, and Penny Vinjevold, head of department for the Western Cape Education Department. Four Growthpoint shopping centres – Constantia Village, Middestad Mall, Golden Acre and Longbeach Mall – and their tenants were actively involved throughout the competition, donating time and resources to make the competition a success. The centres all held book drives, encouraging shoppers to donate books to needy schools, and thousands of books were collected. For more information visit www.growsmart.org.za.

Beat the drug scourge THE 4 Steps Support Group, which works to help addicts and their families, turned one year old this month. The group was launched in September last year when members realised there was a need for a simple programme to help people cope with the disastrous effects of addiction. Through the spiritual programme, members work to instil a sense of responsibility in their charges. People with addiction attend meetings with their families with the aim of rebuilding broken relationships. Six support groups have been

set up so far – four in Mitchell’s Plain, one in Hanover Park and one in Belhar, with one due to start in Manenberg shortly – and members have already addressed about 10 church gatherings and five community meetings in the past year. The programme also reaches youths awaiting criminal hearings. The main group meets in Westridge High School every Saturday from 15:00 until 16:30, and attendance is free. If you’d like to find out more, call DR Rapiti on (021) 397-6029 or 082 581 1846, or send an email to robertrapiti@gmail.com.

Space for instruments to breathe LOUISA STEYL

Their music has been described as “dirty blues” and they are serious believers in soul, a combination that clearly works for new band, Spaceman. After only a short time playing together, the three-piece band has made it to the finals of a battle of the bands competition hosted by Plaasteater outside Brackenfell. Drummer, Ruscali, guitarist and vocalist, Aeron Brown and bassist Josh Daniels entered the competition as an opportunity to get on stage. Ruscali and Aeron had known each other for a while when they decided to put a band together. And so, the search for a bassist began. “Josh landed up on my door,” Aeron says, adding: “the universe sent him.” Josh had actually shown up for work to be done on his guitar, but after talking about the band, he decided to join. “It was all meant to be,” says Aeron. While their name has taken on a space theme since the band has been performing, Ruscali explains that he was talking about creating space in their songs for the instruments to breathe and one day said: “You know what, I’m the spaceman.” The name stuck. He adds that what makes the band unique is the amalgamation of the band members’ different styles. While Ruscali comes from a metal background, Aeron is from a blues background and Josh has always played jazz and funk. Aeron says they try to play these different styles. “We have opened our minds to different genres to make the music accessible,” he says. “We feed off each other,” Ruscali says and Josh adds that it creates a fusion. Their own influences are very varied and Aeron has a penchant for vinyl, citing

that CDs tend to feel cold. “I love, the stranger the better,” he adds. Ironically, Aeron is no stranger to all things strange. His full name is Aeron Louis Lynyrd Skynyrd Brown. Josh is new to rock and prefers musicians such as Stanley Clarke and George Benson. Ruscali on the other hand is happiest listening to bands such as Pantera and AC/ DC. Spaceman takes what they do seriously and their hard work shows. “It’s all very well being talented, but if you don’t put in the effort and time, you are not going to crack it,” Aeron says. They are also thankful for the feedback and constructive criticism from fellow musicians who have come out to watch them play live. Likewise, they are thankful to their neighbours for putting up with their rehearsals. Spaceman is setting up a database of “space fans”, so they can keep them informed of upcoming gigs. To join the intergalactic family, SMS your name to 076 122 7515. This is the same number you can use for more information about the band or to book them. “We would love to play wherever, whenever and for whoever,” Aeron says. Spaceman is playing on Friday 20 May at Plaasteater, with fellow finalists, The Graham Gillot Band. Tickets cost R20 and the show starts around 21:00. Spaceman is working on improving their stage performance for the show and they promise fans that it will be better than anything they have seen from the band before. To find out more about Spaceman, visit their Facebook page under Spaceman Landing.

Top talent in ‘hot’ show REYANA STEYN

DON’T miss the “hottest musical show” this spring, which will showcase some of Cape Town’s top performers, at Bergvliet Auditorium on Saturday 1 October. A variety of legendary, new and local performers will bring the stage alive with “Lag tot jou hare mince”, a production presented by RAD Promotions. The line up will include Durban’s Mario Ogle – the new kid on the block who is famous for songs such as “Can’t stop loving you,” “All I do” and his new hit “Superman” – also the title of his new CD. His performance on the night is part of his Cape Town tour to promote his alum. Ogle was nominated in last year’s SAMA’s in the Best R&B / Neo-Soul category. “The fact that I can release a new album and tour, is beyond amazing,” says Ogle. “I love Cape Town, and can’t wait to showcase the new album first at Bergvliet Auditorium. The audience can look forward to a refreshed and energised performance.” His CD and DVD will be on sale on the night and he will be signing autographs after his performance. Other acts include The Boyz from Athlone, Sumaya Hendricks, Gavin, Denyschia and Waasief from Mitchell’s Plain and 11-year-old Niyaaz, who was a finalist on “SA’s Got Talent.” Stand-up comedians Wayne McKay, Oscar Petersen and Dalin Oliver will have the audience rolling in the aisles. “People are in for an enjoyable evening,” says Dola Hendricks, the production director of RAD Promotions. Part of the proceeds will go to the Al Noor Orphanage Centre in Woodstock. The orphanage ensures that children in need of care and each and every homeless child has a place of safety to call home. During the past 10 years of the centre’s existence it has faced many challenges battling to pay service bills. “We decided to give part of the proceeds to

New talent Mario Ogle will perform. Al Noor Orphanage because they are in dire needs of funds and that was the reason for putting the show together,” says Hendricks. Sumaya Hendricks (28) from Mitchell’s Plain will be performing on the night and says she is “anxious.” “I’m still working on what I will be doing, but it will definitely be something that they will enjoy. I have been singing since the age of 14 and my father always told me to give to charity.” She says that’s her reason for always singing at events. Ekraam Cupido (27) from Athlone says he is excited to perform with his friends and some big names in the business. “I am happy to perform, but even more so because money will be going to the orphanage.” The show starts at 19:30. Tickets cost R100 and are available at House of Rad in Klipfontein Road, Athlone. For block bookings contact Hendricks on 082 580 1257 or Mohammed Khalfie on 073 417 8450.

A

CONFIDENT local organising committee, alongside chairperson Noore Nacerodien, have said construction work is coming along well at Turfhall Stadium despite the rain. The Turfhall Softball Stadium is undergoing an extensive facelift, and is to get a new secondary competition field , compliments of the project’s major partner, the City of Cape Town (“Softball tourney plans on track”, People’s Post, 16 August).

CLOSE CALL: Cape Dis trict played against Mitchell’s Plain in the fi nal InterLocal Football Association (LFA) un der15 category. Cape district won 54 on pen alties after a 00 score after normal time. Seen here, Brent Daniels of Mitchell’s Plain LFA jumps to avoid a fall as Dylan Wilks from Cape District slides in for the ball. Photo: Rashied Isaacs

“I think the contractors are superb,” Nacerodien says. “Today [Friday] I went and I could see the progress taking place. Unfortunately, the rain held back outside work, such as the dugouts, but the fields are looking good.” Nacerodien says major internal works are being done, with a new change room for umpires, an upgraded medical facility, a new president’s lounge, and many other smaller improvements, like new doors and windows. “The only setback that will have a negative impact on the event is the lack of funds,” Nacerodien says.

“Approaches were made to 52 top corporates in our country, with all but two declining to get involved in the event – an event that fits perfectly into the transformation of our country’s young women.” Nacerodien’s makes no effort to temper his bitterness on the matter: “While we are all patriotic towards our national teams, like the Springboks, the companies that survive from the man on the street cast aside the so-called ‘minnow’ sports. “The young South African lady feels as thrilled to represent her country as Bakkies Botha.”

Still, Nacerodien and the rest of the committee are adamant they will be able to represent an event of the highest standards, and he believes the event will build on the profile South Africa developed with the 2010 Football World Cup. Turfhall Stadium, home of Western Province Softball in Crawford, Athlone, will host teams from 16 countries for 11 days during the ninth Junior Women’s World Championship (JWWC), taking place from Wednesday 7 until Saturday 17 December. “With 77 days to go, the vibe is

The local organising committee says the new and improved Turfhall Softball Complex will be a world-class facility to be proud of, and will be protected against vandalism. The planned date for the completion and handover of the facility to the JWWC local organising committee is 12 November, with local super league games taking place on Saturday 19 and Saturday 26 November to test the surface.

The rules of rugby 103 Wales fought hard for a 17-10 victory against Samoa. With all the excitement underway, People’s Post hopes the rules explained last week came in handy, since the matches featured quite a few rucks and mauls. This week People’s Post will focus on knock-ons, offside, and forward passes. Knock-ons These occur when a player accidentally mishandle the ball and knocks it forward with his hands or arms. The player is allowed to try and regain control. If he can catch it before it touches another player or the ground, he can play on. Otherwise it is a “knock-on” and play may be stopped. In a position where possession of the ball is lost, a scrum is set, with the non-offending team getting the scrum feed. If you intentionally knock on, you may be penalised. If what you did prevents a probable try, a

A SUPERB display of rugby on Saturday has Springbok supporters on a definite high – the Boks really showed how champions play the game. Great rugby was played overall on Saturday, with even Ireland coming to the party and beating Australia, making for the first upset of the tournament. And all the Boks played with heart, working to defend their title as the champs, and secured a victory against Fiji. The weekend’s rugby was uncharacteristic. New Zealand annihilated Japan 83-7 on Friday, Argentina whipped Romania 43-8 on Saturday, with Ireland beating Australia 15-6 on the same day. On Sunday, France thrashed Canada 46-19 after a fierce battle, England beat Georgia 41-10, and

Shark Boy ready to go for gold A

CHMAT HASSIEM of Strandfontein experienced the stuff of maritime nightmares five years ago when he lost his right leg to a 4,7m great white shark – but he didn’t allow the lifechanging attack to vanquish his dreams.

Achmat, famously known as “Shark Boy”, lost his leg during a training session with the False Bay Surf Lifesaving Club in Muizenberg, where he worked as a lifeguard. He noticed the great white going after his younger brother Taariq – and bravely drew the shark’s attention to himself, ending up in a face-to-maw battle with the fearsome predator. Despite the loss of his leg to the creature, Achmat retained his resolution to excel. He continued swimming, and started competing with the help and inspiration of South African swimming legend Natalie du Toit. “She trained me for the first few days, and then left me in the hands of Brian Button, coach of Dolphin Aquatics at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands,” Achmat recalls. Thanks to Button’s efforts and Achmat’s own drive, the swimmer has smashed records in both SA and Africa at large, and reached

his dream of joining the South African team in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. Achmat has just returned home from the All Africa Games, which took place in Maputo, Mozambique, from the beginning of the month to Sunday. He competed in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley – and set another record (55:65) for the 100m freestyle, placing him in the top eight in this class in the world. He left Mozambique richer by a gold medal and two silver medals, as well as personal best times in all three of his races. Earlier this month he also came out tops in Canada, where he represented the South Afri-

can Paralymic team in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championship in Edmonton. The team qualified for the Paralympics in London next year. “My goal was well achieved in Canada,” Achmat says. “I went there to qualify in my strongest event, which is the 100m butterfly. The qualifying time was 1:04, and I managed a 1:00:09,” he explains; he is currently ranked in the world’s top five for 100m butterfly and 400m freestyle. Now, Shark Boy is training for a competition in Brazil from Sunday 9 to Saturday 15 October. To keep up to date with his exploits, follow @achmathassiem on Twitter or visit www.achmat.com.
