Weekend of violence

MELISSA PAPIER

W

HAT was planned as a “peaceful” land occupation to highlight the desperate need for housing in Mitchell’s Plain, has led to violent clashes between Metro Police officers and the backyard dwellers of the area – resulting in several injuries. A source at the scene in Swartklip told People’s Post that police officers were “again” starting to shoot at people yesterday afternoon while a police helicopter hovered in the area. This came after thousands of people from Mitchell’s Plain and other areas invaded vacant land at Swartklip Sports field and Kapteinsklip Station in Tafelsig over the weekend. The people who participated in this mass action were mostly registered members of the Mitchell’s Plain Backyard Dwellers and Residents’ Association (MPBYRA). The MPBYRA has been mobilising backyard dwellers and those on the council’s housing waiting list to take action as they feel “the people of Mitchell’s Plain have been failed by politicians and the government”. The MPBYRA was established in August last year, after the previous organisation – the Tafelsig People’s Association (TPA) – split after failing to assist the community. Chairperson for MPBYRA Charles Adams, says the organisation “never expected things to turn as violent as it did”. “The police and Law Enforcement provoked our people, and because of them many of our people are injured today. “In all our meetings with the community, we never told them to use

force or act violently. All we want are the houses that were promised to our people – who have been waiting far too long,” Adams says. Yesterday afternoon People’s Post called Adams to find out what the situation was like in the area. Adams told the paper that despite some people being removed from the land by officers, some still remain “and we will be moving onto the land”. “The backyard dwellers are determined to stay on the land, and we are in the process of getting a Peace Order. After 48 hours we will be legal on this land. The City of Cape Town would have to get an eviction order from the court to have the people removed,” he says. Adams says that the MEC for human settlements, Bongingkosi Madikizela, visited the area yesterday and instructed police to withdraw from the area, saying that toilets and water will be provided in the area shortly. Sixteen officers from Metro Police were injured during the confrontation, with four sustaining serious injuries. Hundreds of people at the scene were also injured. It is understood that during the clashes on Sunday some of the occupants of the land used women and children as human shields; and Law Enforcement officers were attacked with bricks and stones, necessitating the use of a water cannon and rubber bullets. In a media statement released by the City of Cape Town yesterday, communications director, Pieter Cronjé, says the land invasions “could delay formal housing in the area”. Cronjé says the City recognises that there is a need for housing right across Cape Town, and is sympathetic that some people have been waiting for a long time. However,

the City cannot allow people to illegally occupy vacant land or build structures. “The City has plans for formal houses in the Kapteinsklip area. Unfortunately this will take time as roads, water, electricity and sanitation have to be put in first. “People will be allocated housing according to the official housing database. Invading land will not result in preference over someone else on the waiting list,” Cronjé says. He adds that it is illegal to hand out plots or promise people land that is not theirs: “People who do this face prosecution.” “If people continue to attempt to occupy the land and erect illegal structures, the City will consider approaching the High Court for an eviction order to evict them and to break the structures down. “It will also ask the Court to grant an interdict to stop any further structures and unlawful occupation. This is being done to safeguard land, ensure proper planning and provision of services as well as to ensure fairness to all who have waited for houses for a long time.” Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police Station, Captain Mugelaine van der Vendt, says 14 suspects were arrested for public violence at Swartklip, Tafelsig on Sunday. She says that since Saturday the police were in the area to monitor the situation while the backyard dwellers were occupying land at Swartklip and Kapteinsklip Station. “The arrests were made after police were called in to assist Metro Police officers who had removed structures that were erected by people on the land. Residents were angry and upset and started to burn tyres and throw stones at the po-

For story and more photos see Page 5. Photo: Melissa Papier lice,” she says. She added that the police were instructed not to shoot, but to provide manpower to assist. Those arrested appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court yesterday on public violence charges. Sulyman Stellenboom, area coordinator for Communities for Social Change, was part of the group arrested on Sunday. Commenting on the situation, Stellenboom says “people are not

going to move and are anti-council”. “I am now more involved than ever with this cause, and will continue to support the people. The warning from the court was to appear in court and does not say anything about participating in events. The situation is very tense in the area, and it’s the police who are using violence. The people are very peaceful,” says Stellenboom. Those arrested were warned and told to appear in court on 21 June.

Claims of ‘corruption and nepotism’ VERNA VAN DIEMEN

C

LAIMS of nepotism and corruption at the Woodlands Community Residential Unit (CRU) project are rife in the run-up to tomorrow’s elections. About 40 residents have vowed to hold protests outside the site office of the project until they are employed. They have also called for a public apology from Natalie Bent, subcouncil chairperson, for calling Woodlands residents “drug addicts”. The Community Coalition (Comco), led by Charlotte Williams and Rozario Brown, has called for an urgent investigation by the City of Cape Town and the Public Protector into these allegations. But Bent and Executive Mayor Dan Plato,

have scoffed at the allegations, calling it a “political smear campaign”. Bent said: “Communities are currently being instigated by rival political parties to protest and demand jobs.” On Friday at 08:00, about 40 residents protested at the gates of the site in Eros Way. The residents feel they have been left out of the project to upgrade 40 red-brick blocks and 40 plastered blocks. Filcon is the developer of the project to upgrade the City-owned rental units in Woodlands. The upgrade began in January and is scheduled for completion in April 2012. Residents were shouting “Gee vir ons werk” and “down with Natalie Bent” outside the site. While the People’s Post was there, a Filcon bakkie with about nine workers arrived. Community members pounced on the bakkie, screaming: “Where are the Woodlands residents?” A community member, who wishes to remain anonymous, told People’s Post afterwards that there were only four residents from the area on the bakkie. In a press release, Comco accused the DA of employing only their members and family, leaving the “real unemployed people of the area out in the cold”. Comco also lashed out at Bent for her comments about drug addicts, demanding that she apologise to the people of the area. Brown claims that the list of names of unemployed people in the area, which was sent to the contractor, contained the names of DA-affiliated people only. The press release says there is “... unhappiness with the DA and Natalie Bent’s jobs for pals, family and DA members’ policy when handing out jobs at the Woodlands upgrade project which is currently under way”. Bent says she had nothing to do with the list of names because it was being managed by administration staff at the subcouncil office. “I had no dealings with the list. The staff sent the list through to the contractors. I only heard about the list after it had been passed on to the contractors,” she says. About the apology and remarks about

ANGRY: Residents queue for work in front of the site offices in Woodlands.Photo: Verna van Diemen drug addicts in Mitchell’s Plain, Bent says: “I cannot apologise for something that was taken out of context.” She said she was “wrongly quoted” in the newspapers. “What I said was that the community instituted that I request for the contractor to have drug testing done, as the community expressed concerns that the building material earmarked for the rental upgrading could be stolen to be sold for drugs, as has been known to happen in the past.” When People’s Post asked her whether she did not use the words quoted in the article, she said: “I didn’t say that all the youth in Mitchell’s Plain are drug addicts. That would mean that I am trying to commit suicide.” Grace Blouw, the City’s manager for Existing Settlements, says: “In accordance with contract conditions for employment of local labour, eligible candidates for employment are sourced strictly from the Mitchell’s Plain Subcouncil database for the unemployed and do not undergo screening with respect to any criminal records they might have, nor are they requested to reveal any political affiliation they might have. The only additional requirement, after selection by the contractor, is that they possess a valid South African Identity Document.” Blouw says 24 people have already been employed through this process. Residents also claim that the community liaison officer for the project, Salomie Koeries, was selected for the position because she is a DA member. They say that she has employed only her

family and residents in her block of flats. Koeries said: “Yes I am a member of the DA but I was elected by the community. There were two other people who applied for the post and I won fair and square.” Koeries admits that her brother, an unemployed, qualified carpenter, was employed as a labourer and her sister-in-law is employed as a “tea girl” at the project. “Their names were on the database and they live in the area. Who am I to deny anyone work if they went through the process?” A staff member at the subcouncil office who did not want to be named, says the database which was passed on to the contractors consisted of about 500 names of Woodlands residents with the necessary skills for the project. “People registered from the community, filled in their names, personal details and work experience. If contractors want to hire people we enter the request into the computer and the computer kicks out the names of the people in the area,” he said. The City’s rental units in Woodlands consist of 40 red-brick blocks and 40 plastered blocks totalling 400 blocks of five units each. Refurbishment work to the units will entail repairing leaking and blocked sewers, water pipes, sanitary fittings. They will also make the electrical installation safe, repair the electrical installation to ensure adequate light and power where needed, repair and supplement rubbish bins and refuse collection areas, improve security by repairing fences and gates and repair or replace damaged entrance door locks and doors and replace broken window panes.

Police officer wounded during robbery MELISSA PAPIER

A POLICE officer is in a critical condition in hospital after he was wounded on Saturday during a robbery in Mandalay. The sergeant was shot and seriously injured in the neck, when three men approached him while he was on his way to work. The incident took place at 05:30 on Swartklip Road. Warrant officer November Filander, provincial police spokesperson, says the attack happened when the officer was walking to work. “The officer who was fully dressed in police uniform, was approached by three men, who wanted money from him. The men fired a shot at him, wounding him in his neck, and robbed him of his private firearm,” says Filander. A case of attempted murder is being investigated by the Mitchell’s Plain police. Anyone who can shed light on the incident can contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Pieter Joubert, on 076 373 9556 or Crimestop on 08600 10111. Meanwhile, police arrested 54 people during weekend operations for various drug-related crimes. On Friday 13 May at 10:00, during routine patrols in Jonkershoek Street, Tafelsig, police officers stopped a suspicious-looking man. Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police station, Constable Jerome Voegt, says police confiscated 10 dagga stoppe , seven units of heroin and nine plastic packets of tik from the 40-year-old man. He was arrested and appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court (yesterday) on a charge relating to possession of drugs,” Voegt says. In a separate incident on Sunday 15 May at 19:30, police were conducting patrols in Korfbal Street, Beacon Valley, when they stopped a suspicious-looking man and con-

fiscated 24 units of heroin. A 43-year-old man was arrested and appeared in court yesterday on a charge relating to possession of drugs. Daily operations in the area have borne fruit, as drugs were confiscated in all parts of Mitchell’s Plain. In a separate incident on Monday 9 May at 11:20, the Mitchell’s Plain police were doing routine patrols in Moira Street, Tafelsig. Voegt says police officers stopped a suspicious-looking man while patrolling in the area. “After searching the man, police confiscated 66 half-tablets of Mandrax in total, with 49 being wrapped in foil and the rest in a packet. Police also found in his possession 10 plastic packets of tik and three dagga stoppe with an undisclosed amount of money. A 25-year-old man was arrested and appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 10 May on a charge relating to possession of drugs,” says Voegt. On Tuesday 10 May at 07:30, the police received tip-off from the community about drug dealing at a house in Jukskei Street, Beacon Valley. “Upon arrival at the house, police discovered a plastic bag of dagga and nine parcels of dagga. A 49-year-old man was arrested and appeared in court the next day on a charge relating to dealing in drugs,” he said. Voegt added that daily operations in the area bore fruit as during patrols in Gleneagles Way, Westridge the next day (Wednesday 11 May) at 12:40, when police stopped and searched a man and confiscated 18 packets of tik and eight units of heroin. The 27-year-old man was arrested and appeared in court on Thursday. Voegt thanked the community for their continuous support during crime prevention operations, and urged the public to contact their local sector commanders with information on illegal activities. People’s Post was unable to gain the outcomes of the court cases at the time of going to print.

Train schedule on your phone A FREE mobile Internet site for commuters using Metrorail’s Southern and Northern lines has been launched by Grapevine Interactive, a mobile services firm. Until now, commuters have found it very difficult to get hold of metro train schedules without either physically being at a station or having access to a computer. Now it’s as easy as picking up your cellphone. Grapevine Interactive’s mobi site allows anyone with a WAP-capable cellphone to access the standard daily train schedules for the Southern line from Cape Town to Simon’s Town, and the Northern line from Cape Town to Bellville. The schedules work in either direction, include all stations along the route, and take into account week days, weekends and public holidays. Special train times are not included. Grapevine Interactive has now launched the system to commuters as a free service, except for data charges that may be incurred by the mobile operators. The public schedules are accurately reproduced by the service, but if there are cancellations Grapevine will not be notified about it. The site can be visited on http:// cttrains.mobi from a cellphone browser.

Pagad pledges its support Pagad calls meeting to discuss battle plan against scourge of drugs and gangsterism MELISSA PAPIER

T

HE anti-drug group Pagad (People Against Gangsterism and Drugs) has pledged to put an end to drug dealing in Colorado Park. A community meeting was held on Wednesday evening in the Colorado Community Centre, where Pagad addressed a group of about 200 people who voiced their grievances to the organisation, under the watchful eye of the police. Residents expressed their anger at the lack of policing in the area, claiming that police were doing nothing about the drug trade. Eight speakers addressed the crowd. Osman Shahib, an executive member of Pagad, says the organisation was called in by the local neighbourhood watch to assist in dealing with a drug dealer in the area. “The neighbourhood watch called us to assist, as they had been making bonfires for the last four months in front of a drug dealer’s house in Rosewood Drive – opposite a mosque. The community has confronted the merchant on numerous occasions and have asked him to stop dealing and have even approached the Imam to go to him – this has been in vain as the dealer refused to stop,” says Shahib. He adds that because of the community’s “frustration”, and the drug dealer’s defiance, Pagad was called in. “Quite a few people indicated that they wanted to join the movement, and we are in the process of establishing a branch in the area. We n e e d p

eople with integrity, morals and values to be part of this movement. We will be meeting in the coming weeks with the community to discuss matters,” Shahib says. It is understood that Pagad was called to intervene by members of the Colorado Park Neighbourhood Watch following the reported arrest of a watch member on Tuesday for an arson attack on an suspected drug house in Caesar Road. People’s Post has previously reported on the organisation’s attempts to establish security branches in Mitchell’s Plain. These attempts were stopped by the police. It started in Lentegeur in 2007, when a mass public meeting was called in the area (“Pagad is back again”, People’s Post, 31 July 2007). Posters urging residents to attend read: “Be Vearey of optimistic political gestures.” At the time Major-General Jeremy Vearey was the station commissioner of Mitchell’s Plain Police Station. Hundreds of residents turned up for the mass meeting at Lentegeur Civic Centre. The meeting was aimed at discussing how to deal with the scourge of drugs and gansterism. Pagad tried to establish security branches in the area. However these failed to materialise. In 2009 the organisation intervened after a Lentegeur mother was allegedly threatened by suspected drug dealer, Fadwaan “Vet” Murphy and his three co-accused, Hyron Louw, Heinrich Olymne and Riedewaan Jacobs. The four were arrested on Sunday 24 May after people were allegedly threatened and assaulted in Lentegeur (“Pagad steps into the night”, People’s Post, 26 May 2009). Following the meeting, the Mitchell’s Plain police dismissed the organisation, saying they will only work with legitimate organisations. (“Pagad has ‘nothing to offer’”, People’s Post

2 June 2009). Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police Station, Constable Jerome Voegt, says no case of arson or malicious damage to property was reported. “There was no reported cases in that specific street or at the house or at the alleged drug house,” says Voegt. Chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain Neighbourhood Watch Association (MPNWA), Veron Fortuin, says he was not informed about the matter and could not comment without having something “in writing”. Fortuin said: “All I know is that the cluster chairperson raised the issue about the alleged incident at a public meeting in Tafelsig. “The association was not informed about the meeting, and it is understood that the meeting was arranged by Pagad and not the neighbourhood watch. Since the formation of the neighbourhood watch in the area, the alleged drug house has been closed down due to the work of the members.” Michael Jacobs, a resident of Colorado Park and the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum (CPF) cluster chairperson, says: “There is no more drug dealing in Colorado Park and there are no houses in the area dealing in drugs”. “Some of the watch members’ own children are on drugs and they can’t control them. If they are engaging in illegal activities then the police must do the necessary,” Jacobs says. He wished the watch well in their endeavours and in their fight against crime. He adds that the association needs to put steps in place to ban members who are joining Pagad. CPF chairperson, Cassiem Gamiet, says: “At present I have no information and can’t comment on the matter as the organisation was not informed.”

We follow trail of land invaders MELISSA PAPIER

T

HOUSANDS of backyard dwellers in Mitchell’s Plain who claim that they have been “failed by government” have heeded the call of a small organisation to invade vacant land in Mitchell’s Plain. The Mitchell’s Plain Backyard Dwellers and Residents’ Association (MPBYRA) whose offices function from a house in Marcia Street, Lost City, made plans to invade vacant land last Thursday. People’s Post was alerted to these plans and followed the trail. Over 1 000 people gathered in Freedom Park last Thursday evening to attend a meeting called by the organisation. The organisation informed residents of their plans to invade vacant land in the area and encouraged them to squat before the elections. It was mentioned that services such as water, sanitation, electricity and sewage would be negotiated by the organisation with the City of Cape Town. A resident who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of her family’s safety, says after attending the meeting last Thursday that she had doubts about the legality of the organisation “as they could not provide the community with proper answers”. The resident tells People’s Post she heard about the plans from other residents in the area and decided to check it out. She says: “The meeting which was held in Freedom Park on Thursday (12 May) was to get the people to register who would be squatting on the vacant land on the organisation’s database. “What scares me is that they are encouraging violent behaviour by saying that no-one will be able to stop them from invading the land – as they are a force to be reckoned with. Many people are desperate, and are willing to do anything for their own house, but this is not the way to go about it. “When people at the meeting asked their names and if the organisation was legal, the people were told not to ask questions.” People’s Post visited the organisation’s office on Friday 13 May and found scores of people waiting to be helped; some people even took a taxi to get to the office on time before it closed for lunch. The paper was met by the executive members of the organisation, who explained why they were embarking on this specific course of action. Charles Adams (chairperson), Terence Hoshking (spokesperson) and Shahied Keet (deputy chairperson) met with People’s Post, with each commenting on the matter. Adams says the organisation is legitimate as they are “registered with the City of Cape Town”. “We are willing to work with all political parties to ensure that service delivery happens in the area.” Hosking questioned the government about its expenditure on warships and fighter jets. “Why could the government not spend that money on building houses for the people? “The housing database has over a million people waiting on houses, and we as the people of Mitchell’s Plain have been waiting for

years, so now we will just take the land,” he says. The group plans to provide its own security, and will be establishing crime committees who will monitor and ensure that no drug dealing or shebeens operate in the area. Adams informed People’s Post that community members had laid criminal charges against the previous chairperson of the Tafelsig Peoples’ Association (TPA). According to Adams, the person allegedly took money from the backyard dwellers and refused to hand over personal documents of the people. Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police station, Constable Jerome Voegt, confirmed that a case of theft was opened by the complainant on Tuesday 3 May. Voegt says the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and the investigation is currently ongoing. The person’s identity is known to People’s Post. However the person can’t be named as the person has not been arrested or charged. On Saturday afternoon, People’s Post visited Kapteinsklip Station and found backyard dwellers marking out their plots and occupying the land. The organisation addressed people and tried to speak to ward candidate and previous ward councillor for the area, Sheval Arendse, about the matter. Despite Arendse’s explanations, people shouted that he was responsible for not delivering to the people. At the time the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement and Anti-Land Invasion Unit were already monitoring the area. Soon afterwards Sulyman Stellenboom, the area coordinator for Communities for Social Change arrived at the station, saying he had been called by the backyard dwellers to intervene. “I blame the councillor for the mess as he was supposed to be the voice of the community,” Stellenboom said. After making no progress, Stelllenboom called a “confidential meeting” with the backyarders, from which the media and councillors were barred. Aqueela Masoet, a backyard dweller, shouted continuously that she would not vote in the upcoming elections. “The politicians have forgotten about the people and all they want is our votes,” Masoet added. People’s Post left the area and later returned after dark only to find that more people had occupied the land and were busy setting up their structures. Later the paper was informed that the “real” invasion was taking place at Swartklip – which was on the other side of the station. Arriving at Swartklip, People’s Post found hundreds of families making their way to their plots with all their belongings. The police monitored the situation, but left the area shortly. On Sunday more people occupied the land and this time burning tyres were placed in the streets to prevent the Metro Police from coming into the area. After a confrontation between officers and the people many were left injured and homeless. Currently the police and the City’s law enforcement agencies are monitoring and assessing the situation.

Sulyman Stellenboom was accused of having water taps closed off prior to a national government minister’s visit to Mitchell’s Plain in 2009 . (“Water row on the rise, People’s Post, 5 October 2009”). He apparently claimed to Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sicelo Shiceka, that the City was turning off the water supply of residents whose accounts were in arrears. The Western Cape Department of Water Affairs’ head yesterday quoted Stellenboom as a source in its explanation of why it had issued a “predirective” to the City to urgently give the department a response on a memorandum that had been handed to it by a group represented by Stellenboom. The Water Affairs Department said the group had lodged a complaint with it, claiming its grievances had not been resolved despite it having met three times with the mayor. The grievances relayed to the Department of Water Affairs, and reproduced in the department’s press release, were that the residents of Mitchell’s Villiage, Freedom Park, Eastville Heights and Heinz Park have exhausted all avenues in attempting to engage the City of Cape Town authirities on the following issues. . Billing issues in which residents claim to be charged on estimated figures, and demand water arrears bills to be scrapped. . Water meters not reading accurately and automated cut-off of the residents’ water supply.

. Leakage of water meters which was reported two years ago to the authorities. Stellenboom, who is the co-ordinator of the Mitchell’s Plain People’s Forum (MPPF) and the Communities for Social Change (CSC), denies asking anyone to turn off their water meters during Shiceka’s visit. “It’s all lies. I demanded a public apology from Helen Zille, after she said that I told people to turn off their meters, but heard nothing. This matter has been politicised. I am an activist, not a politician.” Stellenboom said that after the meetings with the mayor and a hunger strike and two marches, the City had not responded. “This is disrespectful to the community. We are tired of running around and demand the proper respect for our people.” Rashid Khan, the head of the Western Cape Water Affairs provincial office, said he was aware of the allegations that Stellenboom had staged water cut-offs, but still needed “to ensure that all the steps were followed”. He added: “We met with Stellenboom and other representatives and after hearing their complaints we need to ensure that all procedures were followed.” Khan says his job is to ensure that the water service provider does its job and that the water service recipients charter a way forward. “The City must show how they dealt with the matter. If it is found that the City acted correctly then a media statement will be released to say exactly that.” Philemon Mashoko, the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation director, refused to comment, saying he has not seen the predirective, only the media statement. Grant Pascoe, DA Metro chairperson, slammed the press release. .

INSPIRATIONAL: The Young Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (MEC) Church in Tafelsig lifted the bar and set new stand ards as they present ed each mother with a personalised pro gramme with their own photo on the cov er on Mother’s Day. Reverend Clive Pillay, the minister at the church, said during his service that mothers are the most valuable asset any church can have, and the Young Chapel did not hesitate to pull out all stops to make all the mothers feel their worth as they celebrated Mother’s Day. HAPPY EASTER: The Easter bunny was recently spotted at the Liberty Promenade Shopping centre hand ing out Easter eggs to shoppers in the mall. Not only did the little ones visiting the shopping centre over the Easter weekend receive a little something, but those chil dren who had to spend their Easter weekend in hospital also received a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny, courtesy of Liberty Prome nade. Michele Fleur, the market ing for Liberty Promenade, says the centre hosted an Easter egg drive, whereby shoppers and tenants were invited to donate Easter eggs for those less fortunate. “Over the month of April, over 1 700 Easter eggs were collected, which was donated to the children’s ward at the Tygerberg Hospital,” Fleur says. She thanked all those who donated Easter eggs for the event. Handing over the gifts are Fleur and Chesray Sampson (marketing assistant). Photo:Supplied

Lower retirement age I HAVE been following the trend of most large companies, including smaller ones, preferring to outsource their labour to labour brokers. This is a blatant abdication of responsibility. Managers are trained within the human resource field, but fail to apply it within the workplace. It is easier and less embarrassing to tell a broker to terminate a worker’s contract without giving any explanation or reason. This is a clause written into the contract between the broker and the client. The labour turnover becomes so high, and the output is of poor quality, by the manufacturer, due to inexperienced staff. Perhaps the solution to this problem, and the high unemployment problem is to re-visit the retiring age. It is a known fact, that when males reach retiring age of 65, their health has deteriorated, and they cannot enjoy their retirement. The female retiring cannot enjoy her retirement whilst her partner is still working. It is more practical or benefiting to both the employer and employee to downscale the retiring age to age 50 on a voluntary basis. This will also ensure that the outgoing matriculants are guaranteed employment, to soften the high unem-

ployment rate. This would also mean that 50-year-old couples have options, either to retire, or where special skills are needed, train incoming youngsters to replace those leaving the company. It is also easier for labour brokers to manage and control new employees, rather than constantly replacing the older experience staff. I also don’t see why a female is penalised with her government pension, if she has been working at different companies for all the years. When her husband retires, and receives a pension, it is assumed that his pension from his last company should be sufficient to accommodate both of them. This is unfair, as she has also contributed to the state, and is entitled to her own income. This is where, once again, the female becomes totally dependent on her partner when she needs money to spend. It is a myth, when government officials tell you that you spend less if you are not employed. Are you suppose to just sit at home and not eat, or move around? What is Cosatu

4. Creating job opportunities. Unemployment is constantly rising. 5. Exorbitant salaries of directors and city managers. Some of these salaries are now state secrets. 6. Corruption at all levels. Money stolen fraudulently is never found and returned 7. Complain about the high salaries of councillors or parliamentarians. Many are there just for the money. Cosatu is doing none of the above, but siding with government. Cosatu should complain about all provinces where there is poor delivery of services, and not concentrate on the Western Cape only. How can the subsidies that the workers pay to Cosatu help the workers? Cosatu must have their coffers full by now, and some of that money can be used in educating the workers. I hope that the readers open their eyes and see Cosatu as a labour union and not a political party. JAMES JOOSTE (Address not supplied)

WHILST listening to the Worker’s Day rallies, the above question came to mind: What is the role of Cosatu? Are they a political party or labour union? To my knowledge, Cosatu started off as a labour union and should not be involved in politics at all. They should get out of politics and do what they are supposed to do, which is looking after the interests of the workers. Cosatu should attack government on: 1. Poor salaries for nurses, doctors, policemen, teachers, etc. It is these workers who pay their monthly subsidies. 2. Imports of cheap clothing from China. Clothing factories that were once the backbone of our economy are closed. 3. High electricity tariffs. Cosatu promised to fight the increases, but was quiet afterwards.

A big thank you! I AM writing this letter on behalf of my blind aunt, Elizabeth. She would like to commend the taxi drivers and their “sliding door operators” (commonly known as gaartjies) of the Cape Town to Town Centre and Town Centre to Westgate Mall routes for their assistance and kindness to towards her.

You can imagine how hard it must be for a blind person to use public transport but according to her, the drivers and gaartjies went beyond their duty to ensure her safe passage from Salt River Road daily. She is extremely grateful. Well done and please keep setting this great example. Yours truly, LYNN FREEMAN Mitchell’s Plain

In response . Thank you, Golden, Arrow for listening to our pleas. We are looking forward to you fully implementing the routes seven days a week and not just weekends. I spotted the white bakkie with the CEY registration, black tailgate with “Ou Pourie” on it. They were on Vanguard Drive passing Grand West and Wingfield, and it was at about 12:00 today. I reported this to Strandfontein police, Constable Willemse, who told me to report to 10111, which I did. Treknet fishermen . Stacey, stop blowing hot air, and do your job! You are never there and neither are your staff when a net is pulled. They rarely see what has come out of the ocean. We all know it’s illegal! Do your work, even at Kalk Bay. H Mentor, you also need to abide by the rules. . What a joke, treknetters to throw back small fish! It does not help when all the little fish have been crushed or had the last bit of oxygen squeezed out of their tiny lungs by all the other poor fish trapped in the net. Spin us another, trek-jokers. Pat H General . Lentegeur clinic must be closed. People must sit and wait for up to six to seven hours, whether it be at family planning or the children’s clinic. There are constant problems. . So as soon as he and our blessed brother “saint” Zuma get to heaven (one of these days?), I suggest they look up the spirit of our other very great and brave warrior, (the late) Nduna Kakula Dingaan, and just check their facts by quietly asking him as to what happened at his famous signing of the deed of sale ceremony way back in 1836. Photo: Rashied Isaacs SPOIL SPORT: A Strandfontein AFC supporter is likely to be severely disciplined after his unsporting behaviour set a poor example for fans and junior footballers, after an ill tempered under15 division match of the LFA Mitchell’s Plain, involving Strandfontein AFC and LeedsLentegeur at the Stephen Reagon Sports Complex on Saturday. The spectator (seen with bottle in hand) emptied the bottle of water over the young referee’s head, while venting his anger at the referee. Gerard Kemp, the chairperson of Strandfontein AFC, in reaction to the incident, said yester day that the club will never condone “such poor behaviour from its members and supporters”. Kemp said the club has asked its under15 manager and coach to submit their reports on the incident. He said the club will also hold a meeting with all parents and junior players to address the situation. Wayne Carstens, the president of the LFA MItch ell’s Plain, said the association was awaiting all reports before deciding what disciplinary steps to take. He urged all clubs to take responsibilty for the behaviour of their fans and members. Photo: Rashied Isaacs

It’s vengeance versus venturesome I

MAGINE title-chasing Ajax Cape Town FC being upstaged by a band of vengeful footballers in the colours of Maritzburg United at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon. ‘Tis no illusion brought on by the mind-boggling facts about whether the other title-aspirants – Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs – will come into the reckoning for honours – if Maritzburg pulls off another giantkilling act. But remember how Maritzburg trounced Foppe de Haan’s charges 3-0 in Pietermaritzburg in January? Maritzburg FC’s vindicative approach will be best reflected by the core of its team – most of whom do not carry fond memories of pursuing a football career in Cape Town. At least seven footballers – whose talents were discarded and disregarded by the three Cape Town clubs campaigning in the Absa Premier Soccer League over the past couple of seasons – are poised to lock horns with the Urban Warriors from 15:00 on Saturday.

Among them the ex-Ajax striker Diyo Sibisi, who will indeed have a point to prove. Sibisi was transferred to Maritzburg because his direct-style of play and shoddy first touch did not compliment the swift inter-play between midfield and attack at Ajax. Now 12 months later, the competitiveness of hard-running Sibisi poses the biggest threat to Derek Decamps and Clayton Daniels – whose partnership is so vital for Ajax to clinch the title for the first time in its 11year history. Recently, the central duo appeared suspect in a 2-1 win over AmaZulu FC at Athlone, as well as a 4-0 thrashing by Kaizer Chiefs at Polokwane – with veteran goalkeeper Hans Vonk doing little to inspire his defence against Chiefs. Daniels, tasked to track Sibisi, is mindful that his prey has top-scored with 10 goals thus far this season – with his consecutive braces against Mpumulanga Black Aces and Mamelodi Sundowns steering Maritzburg away from relegation. Daniels can ill-afford to lose sight of Sibisi, or the slow-moving, yet subtle Fadlu Davids – overlooked by Engen Santos FC – who relishes roving behind the strikers.

Equally effective is Namibian striker, Rudolf Bester, whose strong runs down the flanks has yielded him nine goals in his debut season. Maritzburg captain and goalkeeper, Shuaib Walters believes the pressure will be on Ajax from the start. “They’ll need the win more than we do. If we score first they’ll be in trouble and unsure about their next move. If they push more players forward in search of an equaliser we could hit them on the counter-attack. “Yes, the heat will definitely be on Ajax,” says Walters, whose anticipated return to PSL debutants Vasco Da Gama was dashed by Maritzburg bettering Vasco’s financial package for his services this season. The other ex-Capetonians donning the Maritzburg blue are defenders Peter Petersen (ex-Hellenic, Moroka Swallows), Bevan Fransch and Byron Hendricks (both ex-Santos FC), as well as midfielders Kurt Lentjies (FC Cape Town, Sundowns) and David Booysen (Ajax youth academy). But neither of them have shown consistency and lack the necessary pace to snuff out the free-scoring Thulani Serero, Khama Billiat, Brent Carelse and Sameehg Doutie.

Indeed victory will mean something special for Serero in his farewell match before joining Ajax Amsterdam in Holland. And so too for Carelse – on the brink of palming a fourth league champions’ medal – after doing so twice in the colours of SuperSport United and once with Sundowns in recent years. . Tickets at R40, R60 and R80 will be on sale this week at Computicket and Shoprite/ Checkers branches.
