Thieves are sinking to a new low by targeting paramedics. Instead of saving lives, emergency workers now have to worry about their own safety. Emergency workers have been targeted by criminals three times in two weeks in Mitchell’s Plain last month. The ambulance attendants have twice been held up at gunpoint and in one case a heart monitor was stolen from their vehicle. It has been reported the stolen equipment worth R35 000 was sold for a measly R27. The three cases are among 10 reported this year of staff falling victim to crime while on duty. An EMS team was held at gunpoint on AZ Berman Drive and robbed of all their belongings on Wednesday 26 June. On Tuesday 18 June, a heart monitor was stolen from an ambulance while staff were tending to a patient in Eastridge. Police spokesperson Andre Traut says four suspects were arrested for stealing the monitor. On Thursday 13 June, an EMS team was held at gunpoint while travelling between Eastridge and Tafelsig. Nothing was stolen and no injuries were reported. However, paramedics were left traumatised. It is at this stage unclear why the robbers took off without taking anything. With a passion for their jobs, paramedics say they sometimes risk their lives to help their patients. But it may no longer be worth the risk, they say. “It is difficult to just walk away when you are able to save a life. But we are trained to assess the volatility of the situation and do what is best for our safety and the patient’s

well-being,” says a paramedic, who asked not to be named. “Criminals know there is valuable equipment in the ambulance. They will stop at nothing to get something which they can sell for a quick fix. They have even stolen our GPS,” he says. Paramedics’ lives are constantly in danger, the 26-year-old adds. “We will attend to patients who have been shot in a gang war and the rival gangs will prevent us from treating the patient. The victim’s family will then demand that we treat them, but sometimes it is just not possible. “The patient will then have to be taken out of the area before he can be treated,” the paramedic says. Angelique Jordaan, the provincial health department spokesperson, says paramedics have been permitted to use their discretion to remove themselves from an area should they feel their lives are in danger. “We cannot expect police escorts with each call, but our staff’s personal safety is our primary concern,” she says. Provincial health minister Theuns Botha says the procurement of security services for paramedics will be investigated. “We are very concerned about the safety of our staff. I have asked the department to look into the procurement of armed security guards to accompany our ambulances into high-risk areas to address this matter,” he says. Procedures are in place to equip paramedics with the safety skills to safeguard themselves in dangerous situations, Jordaan says. “We have standard operating procedures in place to inform staff of safety as well as to provide them with safety tips such as antihijacking behaviour or to not deliberately advertise expensive items such as jewellery and cellphones,” she explains. Botha says the isolated incidents are as a result of opportunistic criminals. “We are constantly trying to improve on response times and criminals are hindering us from doing this,” he says.

We as a community need to take back our streets and not be held ransom by crime. This we can achieve through the establishment of more street committees and strengthening our neighbourhood watches.” With six women on the executive, the newly elected members have made history in the Mitchell’s Plain Cluster. Mitchell’s Plain CPF chairperson Abie Isaacs says the changing face of leadership is welcomed. “These are strong women who are committed to serving their community. They are changing the face of community involvement in safety structures. They have a passion for what they do and I am certain they will fulfil their mandate,” he says. Isaacs has vouched his support to the new executive and Strandfontein residents. “Strandfontein is not an island on its own. It does not belong to Muizenberg, but to the Mitchell’s Plain Cluster. It is important that we work together in fighting the drug demon and social ills in our areas,” he adds. Crime-prevention operations will focus on initiating crime combating solutions such as street watches as well as block and neighbourhood watches. “Over the next few weeks the CPF will hold meetings with all the relevant role players in Strandfontein with the hope of working towards resolving crime issues together,” Schuter says. TOWN CENTRE: TRADERS AND CITY FACE-OFF

Security squ ssquabbles quabbl abbles es LAILA MAJIET

A war is looming between traders and the City of Cape Town as promises to have security beefed up at the Town Centre have not been met. Four years after moving from Symphony Lane, traders are still waiting on the City to deliver. However, subcouncil chairperson Eddie Andrews says an additional 10 Law Enforcement officers are expected to be deployed to the bustling shopping precinct in this financial year. Kulsum Baker, the chairperson of the Sector CBD, says she helped mobilise traders to work with the City in a bid to make the recent upgrade a reality. But all the undertakings made by the City to get traders to move, have not been met. Symphony Lane was declared a no-trading zone as part of the Mitchell’s Plain Town Centre Informal Trading Plan which was proclaimed in the Provincial Gazette on 16 October 2009. “As part of the negotiations to get us out of Symphony Lane to the new trading area, we were promised storage space and additional security guards. Almost half a decade later and we are still waiting,” Baker fumes. Jasmine Hendricks, the chairperson of the United Hawkers Forum, says traders are ready to boycott the City and stop paying rent. “Our concerns and pleas are falling on deaf ears. This is one of the biggest informal trading markets, yet we are getting a raw deal,” she explains. Andrews says the Area Coordinating Team is investigating what commitments

But, Hendricks says elected council officials are letting traders down. “We are calling on the mayor to come to the Town Centre to inspect the conditions in which we have to work. 4 WORD ON THE STREET

PEOPLE'S POST | MITCHELL'S PLAIN Tuesday, 9 July 2013

Talk the talk talk

The crime rate in Cape Town remains a major concern. Residents are faced with endless social ills and police are constantly bombarded with complaints from citizens. Provincial Minister for Community Safety Dan Plato has announced that 25 public meetings will be held over the next six months to address crime. These meetings will act as a platform for community safety structures and residents to voice their concerns and offer solutions in a bid to address the problem. People’s Post took to the streets to find out whether residents think these meetings would be effective in curbing crime.

KIRSHIN ABR KIRSHIN ABRAHAMS AHAMS suspects the meetings may be a political move. “The elections are coming up and I think it is just a way for the government to gain people’s support.”

ROCHEN TURNER believes the meetings will be effective in reducing crime. “Many people are not aware that if somebody talks about it, it could make a positive contribution. The government should approach people and ask for suggestions.”

VASHTI VIS VISSER SER thinks the community needs to work closely with the government to reduce this scourge. “I think that by reporting crime and form ing neighbourhood watches, we can assist in the crime reduction.”

MICAELA JOOSTE MICAELA JOOSTE says people are losing faith in the government. “A lot of crimes are being com mitted in poor communities. I think these meet ings are a political ploy because nothing is being done to address complaints.”

BERNHARD FR FRANK ANK believes government’s words need to be supported by firm action. “They need to translate their promises into services. The meetings will only be good if there are results.”

BRIAN K KOCK OCK AND ZAIN ZAIN GALLIE GALLIE say more should be done to reduce the crime rate. Kock says: “Po lice arrest criminals, but no further action is tak en.” Gallie agrees. “They make empty promises.”

LINDA VIS VISSER SER thinks the meetings are a step in the right direction. “More severe punishment needs to be enforced. The government needs to cleanse its own system before focusing on crime.”

Tuck shop owners have been advised to reconsider their trading hours. With few people on the streets after dark, tuck shops are vulnerable to criminals,” he says. Even behind locked gates, tuck shop owners remain a target, Coetzee insists. “Cigarette delivery vehicles have become a hot target for criminals. Many of these delivery vans have been robbed in Mitchell’s Plain already. These trucks come into the area and they put the lives of residents in danger,” he explains. barriers for No barriers for dancing partners partners LAILA MAJIET

They may seem like unlikely partners, but when Shahied Johnson and Chantelle Le Roux dance, gold is always a trot away. The dancing duo is preparing to continue their winning streak on Saturday after winning gold in the Latin category at the Fendansa Dance Sport Festival last month. Their young partnership has enabled the creation of truly extraordinary choreography. Johnson (42) was born with spina bifida, a disorder which leaves part of the spinal cord open. He is paralysed from the hip down, but this has never stopped him from doing what he loves. With a passion for dance, the wheelchairbound man from Montrose Park sways to the rhythm of the music with his able-bodied partner. He has been dancing competitively for 11 years and works as a switchboard operator at a five-star hotel along the coast in Camps Bay. “I put in a lot of hard work to fine tune my performance. I like to go before the judges knowing I have prepared well. It adds to my confidence which polishes off my performance,” he explains. With the next competition just days away, Johnson says he has not practised as often as he had hoped. “My dancing partner and I live on opposite ends of the city. She still studies and I work shifts. We have managed to squeeze in a few rehearsals, but it is not enough,” he admits. Johnson has competed internationally and placed 11th in Holland at the World Championships in 2005. “To place 11 out of 29 countries was a great achievement for my dance partner and me. I won that competition with the help of my first ever dance partner. We had been dancing together with for seven years. She understood me. I would ride over her feet and she

Watching people dance competitively inspired Johnson to take to the floor. “I always enjoyed the langarm, but never knew there was so much more to dancing than that. I have uncovered a whole new world of dance styles by competing,” he says. Your attitude determines your success, Johnson insists. “Never feel sorry for yourself because you are in a wheelchair. Never limit your dreams and aspirations because you have a disability. Disabled people are able and can achieve anything. You just have to put your mind to it,” he believes.

More feet are making their way toward public transport interchanges as fuel prices last week hit an all-time high. And if the rand’s value continues to plummet, more petrol price hikes could be in the pipeline. Lift clubs, cycling and even oldfashioned walking are some of the alternatives motorists are now forced to consider to keep their budgets balanced. SHOOTOUT: QUESTIONS AFTER ROBBERY

‘Police fired the first shots’ LAILA MAJIET

A shootout which saw bullets rain down during a police highspeed chase is being questioned by witnesses. The holiday cheer was interrupted as officers opened fire while in pursuit of a group of robbers two weeks ago. Kitted in takkies and sportswear, a large group of Tafelsig teenagers paid a visit to Mother Nature with a trek through the Wolfgat Nature Reserve on Thursday. Leading the group was sport enthusiast Pamela Arendse. This outing formed part of the numerous holiday programmes arranged by

ward councillor Sheval Arendse. “This was one of many hikes that will be happening during the course of the school holidays. “I’ve seen a need for unemployed youth and pupils to enjoy the nature reserve and beautiful coastline on their doorstep,” he says.

Pupils at Wavecrest Primary School have started a new chapter. The Grade 1s spent time in the classroom this holidays, working hard at improving their literacy levels. Education NGO Living Through Learning hosted the reading project. The holiday programme is part of a Foundation Phase literacy campaign run by the organisation. Aimed at improving the literacy levels of primary school pupils, the long-term project provides children with fun and interactive tools to improve their reading skills. Facilitator Leila Walters says this approach enables young children to learn how to read and write in a playful environment. The holiday programme was held to assist children who score between 50% and 60% in literacy. “In 2012, we facilitated a similar holiday program at Greenlands Primary School in Bishop Lavis. We saw a major spike in pupils’ academic performance. We try to make learning fun by incorporating games and playing, something that not many curriculums incorporate.

KEEPING BUSY: Hayley Blake adores creating different shapes with dough. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED “We present the work in such a way that the children don’t even realise they are working. As a result, much of the learning takes place without pupils losing interest,” Walters says. Wavecrest Primary School is one of nine schools in Cape Town which participates in the project.

Your SMSes . It is a massive problem when pupils are still seen on the road to school at 08:30 and 09:00. Why is this? I say locking them out could easily result in them being locked up. While they are denied access to school for arriving late? Their minds wander and who knows what they can get up to. I would like to interview a few pupils, preferably a pupil of each school, as well as the principals to get their views on how to remedy the latecoming situation going forward. I would like to turn this into a documentary. Please contact me on mia@inet-media.co.za. . We no longer life in the area, but Mr Chotia was my son’s teacher when he attended Glendale. My son speaks of him with respect and I am grateful for the values he taught my son and others. Continue the good

work, Mr Chotia and staff. Mrs Burns . I don’t buy the story of a camera waiting on parts for repair. Those cameras are not made to be repaired, but to be replaced. You must remember this is not Table View or the Waterfront – this is the place where only your money matters. Sceptic . Promenade Mall used to be extremely hot inside before there was air-conditioning, but I just realised it is never switched on. I asked the woman at the information desk why this is and she said the customers requested it because it is winter. Absolute nonsense. Are they that cheap? . They also chased the criminals past my house in Mitchell Avenue in Woodlands, shooting at them out of their windows, putting other drivers and the residents in danger on Saturday afternoon. . I was also a victim of this guy. He told me the same story of being hospitalised. John, Portlands

. It is heartbreaking to read these stories, as these people are our “lost generation”. I believe only early intervention and compassion, together with a strong support system, can overcome this scourge. Unfortunately so many addicts are already too far gone and lose that vital family support. I’m not even

sure if more and cheaper rehabs will help while tik is freely available on every corner. . Bring back chain gangs to clean all areas – roads, pavements, beaches, bridges and everything that needs repair. Hard work will restore dignity, reduce crime in jail and introduce studies at night. Take away TV.

THE NIYAAT OF FASTING IS: Nawaitu Sauma-Ghadin An-Adaai Fardi-Ramadana, Ha-Thee-His Sanati, Li-la-Hi Ta'Aala “I intend to fast for the coming day in order to perform my duty towards Allah in the month of Ramadaan in the present year” NIYAAT FOR BREAKING FAST IS: Alla-Humma Laka-Sumtu Wa'ala Rizqi ka aftar-Tu “Oh Allah, for Thy Glory have I fasted, and now I break the Fast with food that cometh from Thee” ALLAH SAYS IN THE HOLY QUR’AAN Surah 11 - Ayat 185 Ramadaan is the (month) in which was sent down The Qur’aan, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong) So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month, should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you, He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to Glorify Him in that He has guided you, and perchance ye shall be grateful.

thlone’s Progress RFC have targeted a second place finish in Division Four after starting the second round of matches with three consecutive victories. The City Park based club lost three and drew one of their first eight games in the league, but the second round has seen them notch up wins against Cities and Young Brothers in June and thrash Delft RFC 44-13 on Saturday. Assistant coach Carlo Booysen says his team’s good form is the result of a rediscovered appreciation for the rule book. “In the first round we dropped a couple of points against teams we shouldn’t have lost to because of our discipline. But we have started the second round well and today was another positive performance,” he says. “Building from here, we can end in second place. I don’t think we can catch the first-placed team because they are way ahead of us on points.” Progress were dominant from the first whistle against Delft and their performance was reflected on the scoreboard as they raced to an 18-0 half time lead. Flyhalf Jethro Knoll slotted two penalties in the 10th and 15th minutes and converted the first of Rashied Davids’ two tries in the 25th and 40th minutes. Progress continued where they left off in the second half, with a tries from Gamat Kelly and Stanton Arendse, in the 10th and 14th minutes respectively. Both were converted by Knoll. Delft finally added a touch of respectability to the scoreline with two penalties from Delano September at the 55th and 60th minute marks and a try from Randall Klim, which September also converted. However, Progress were not done with

the scoring and hammered the final nail into the coffin when Shane Fortune finished off a long-range counter-attack. Knoll capped the performance with another conversion. Booysen was happy to come out of the game with the bonus point victory, but said his side had expected the game to be “easy”. “It was a good performance because we came from a three-week bye, so this is one of our first games back. Many of guys didn’t train during this period,” he says. “The guys came out tops. The first half performance wasn’t great, but we picked it up and some good changes were made in the second half. We got the bonus point, which is a plus.” Progress have a bye this weekend, but will hope to take a major step towards their goal of finishing second on the table on Saturday 20 July, when they face current second-placed side Bishop Lavis. In other results from the weekends matches Hamiltons beat Bellville 78-12 in Super league A, while Primrose beat Hamlets 41-7 in Super League B. In Premier League A Surrey Estate Rangers lost 14-36 to St George’s away from home and MIT Rangers lost 12-20 away to Strand in Premier League B. Rocklands lost 18-23 to Violets at home in Division One, while Young Stars beat TechGardens 16-13 in a City Bowl derby and Caledonian Roses beat Masiphumelele 28-21 in Division Two. In Division Three, Retreat RFC notched up a 22-10 win at home to Strand Pioneers, Perseverance lost 7-36 away to Young Ideas and Temperance lost 7-18 at home to Imiqhaya. The Pinelands based Police club beat Khayelitsha 25-20 at home and Grassy Park’s Titans beat Cities 37-0 in Division Four.

A chance to play for Old Mutual The Old Mutual Football Academy will host trials for boys born in 2003 and 2004 on Sunday 14 July. The trials will take place at Mutual Park in Jan Smuts Drive, Pinelands

fter hours of gruelling training sessions and six pressurised qualifying matches, 16 football teams will reap the rewards when they play in the finals of the 10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge. The Challenge will pit Cape Town’s best under-17 footballers against each other in a battle for the prize money, bragging rights and possibly the chance at a professional career. People’s Post is the tournament’s print media sponsor. Many of South Africa’s most celebrated professional footballers first made a name for themselves or were scouted at the Engen Knockout. Edries Burton, chief operations manager at host club Santos FC, urged the current crop of players to make the most of their opportunity and emulate the Engen Knockout’s most famous products. “As a former player, my challenge to the young players is that there is an opportunity here. If you look at Thulani Serero – this is where it started for him and look where it’s going,” he says. “The stars are the limit for these young players. Who knows where they can end up? They are young and have the world at their feet. They can make a decision to finish further than Thulani Serero; it’s entirely up to them.” Over 100 teams started the qualifying process at the beginning of June and on Thursday the 13 teams who made it through
