Route of dissatisf dissatisfaction action

LAILA MAJIET

Millions are spent on a modern healthcare facility proudly welcoming patients, yet an iron-clad arrangement between government officials and the taxi industry is missing. Yet another row has erupted between the City of Cape Town, provincial government and taxi bosses about who gets to operate the route leading to the new Mitchell’s Plain Hospital on AZ Berman Drive. The Mitchell’s Plain Taxi Association’s secretary Henry “Hawk” Williams says taxi drivers are being given the run-around. “There is a lot of confusion about who will operate the service. This matter should have been finalised long before the hospital opened. The proper allocation of routes and demarcation of bays is necessary,” he says. But provincial government officials say commuters will have no difficulty accessing

the hospital. Thorpe Koorts from the provincial health department says a drop-off point for buses and taxis has been designed into the hospital’s infrastructure. “A designated space for taxis and buses is located on the hospital premises, 30m from the pedestrian entrance,” he explains. But allowing taxis on the hospital premises is not the ideal solution, Williams believes. “Our vision is to have a shuttle service collect commuters from a drop-off zone outside the facility. The nature of the taxi business is not conducive to a healing environment for patients,” Williams says. The hospital opened its doors to the first patients yesterday. However, walk-in patients will only be accommodated at the facility in October. Willie Pepper represents 11 taxi associa-

tions operating on AZ Berman Drive. And while the hospital has not yet opened for walk-in patients, he says there is a need for them to have finalised who will operate on the new route. “Patients being treated at the facility will likely receive visitors who travel by public transport. What will happen when the taxis arrive at the hospital and are turned away?” he asks. AZ Berman Drive is a national road used by a number of different taxi associations. “This could pose a problem if this the matter goes unresolved,” Williams adds. Brett Herron, the Mayoral Committee member for Transport, says stakeholders had been invited to a meeting, but had been barred from attending by the Mitchell’s Plain Taxi Forum. “All 12 taxi associations and Golden Arrow Bus Services were invited to a meeting

on Tuesday 21 May, however it appears that the Mitchell’s Plain Taxi Forum prohibited the other taxi associations from attending the meeting,” he says. Williams disputes this. “No one had been prohibited from attending the meeting. However, someone had prevented the meeting from going ahead. There are divisions in the taxi industry which have delayed this process,” he insists. Herron says at the meeting the City asked forum representatives to inform the associations about the proposed plan for public transport at the hospital. But it appears, Herron says, none of the information was relayed to the relevant role players. Another meeting is scheduled for 4 July. “The City is involved in ongoing negotiations with the affected taxi operators in the area,” Herron says.

MISSING CHILDREN: FAMILIES’ LONG WAIT FOR LOVED ONES’ RETURN

A heartbreak that lingers

LAILA MAJIET

He was supposed to be out for less than a minute. But 16 years later, his parents are still waiting for Matthew Ohlson to walk through the front door. If he should, it will be as a 25-year-old man. His parents haven’t seen him since he disappeared on 24 March 1997. The then nine-year-old boy had gone into the street outside his home to collect the dirtbin and never came back. Statistics reveal that a child goes missing every six hours in South Africa, according to the Bureau of Missing Children. In the Western Cape, most missing children cases are reported in Mitchell’s Plain, Nyanga and Delft, police officials confirm. While the number of children reported missing has decreased over the years, incidents of little ones who have still not been found in the province have increased. Last year, 164 children were reported missing in the Western Cape. Of these, 147 were found, while 16 families are yet to gain closure as the whereabouts of their children remain unknown. This year alone, 58 children have already been reported missing in the province and only 42 of them have been reunited with their families. Matthew’s mother Michelle Ohlson describes her ordeal as a long journey with few answers. “It never gets easier; you just learn how to better deal with the situation,” she says. Michelle remembers her second eldest son

as being extremely inquisitive and always trying to help fix appliances. The Ohlsons have since moved from their Westridge home in a bid to make a fresh start for the sake of their three other children. “But I don’t know how to put this behind me. I will never stop having faith that he is still out there. While other people will stop looking for your child, as a parent you never give up.” The experience has urged her to reach out to others in the same situation. The Ohlsons started Concerned Parents of Missing Children, an organisation which helps families come to terms with the disappearance of a loved one. The group also assists in tracing the person’s whereabouts. “I do it because easing the pain of other mothers comforts me,” she explains. New cases arrive on the desks of children’s organisations daily. As the school holidays see children running around unattended in search of excitement and adventure, parents are urged to keep constant tabs on the whereabouts of their offspring. The most important point to remember is to report your child missing as soon as possible. There are no waiting periods, Pink Ladies director Dessie Rechner stresses. “Immediately report a missing person to the police and contact Pink Ladies who will assist the police in finding the missing person,” she urges. To prevent them from disappearing in the first place, Pink Ladies spokesperson Louise Botha encourages guardians to know their children’s comings and goings at all times. “Parents should know their children’s friends and really involve themselves in

Reaching closure is a personal process which may never become a reality, she explains. “At best, parents can be supported by focusing on practising positive, appropriate coping mechanisms. It is important to seek the assistance of a psychologist for support in coming to terms with a missing child.” Gnawing uncertainty further retards healing. “They may continue hoping the child will return and will be hesitant to make life changes that would make it diffi-

cult for the child to find them. Given the complexity of the situation, it is crucial to use the services of a psychologist,” she says. “It is important that every immediate family member feels comfortable with the way in which closure is intended to occur. It will mean discussions and open communication are needed.” Parent neglect, while the primary cause of children going missing, is not the only cause, says Child Welfare’s Niresh Ramklass. “Children sometimes run away. This is something that can be addressed if a parent is truly listening. It is important that parents communicate effectively and make them feel safe and loved in their homes,” he says.

Arrest in cop killing LAILA MAJIET

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the killing of an off-duty constable. The suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon. Constable Brandon Mapoe was gunned down in Dassenberg Street, Tafelsig on Sunday morning. The 29-year-old constable is the second officer slain in the province in the last week. Provincial police spokesperson Andre Traut says they are determined to end cop killings. “At approximately 01:45, a 29year-old constable, stationed at Cape Town Central Police Station, was fatally wounded during what we believe was an argument with an acquaintance,” he says. It is believed that the officer was gunned down with his own firearm, but police declined to confirm this. Traut pledges that the police will stop at nothing to stem the tide of violence against officers. Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum chairperson Abie Isaacs urges residents to come forward should they have any information about the shooting. “Justice must prevail. We condemn this in the strongest terms,” he says.

STRANDFONTEIN: CITY FINALLY RELOCATES FIRE VICTIMS AFTER WEEKS OF PLEADING

Families’ long wait is over LAILA MAJIET

Strandfontein squatters are resettling in 7de Laan after being moved to the settlement over the weekend. The new settlers previously lived in a bush in Clipper Road until a fire razed their homes on Monday 17 June. The eight shackdwellers remained on the hill between the ashen remains of their possessions for almost two weeks. Katy Moses (44) had been living between the trees on the sand dune for seven years. Her home was one of three destroyed in the fire. Law Enforcement officers had promised to relocate the displaced people after the blaze but last week, they were still waiting. “The officers assessed our situation before promising to move us to 7de Laan. They said they would give us starter kits of zinc sheets, plastic sheeting and nails with which we could rebuild our homes,” Moses explains. However, help only arrived after the homeless group had been living in icy conditions for 11 days. Situated just off Spine Road, 7de Laan is growing as the City relocates displaced people to the informal settlement. However, many of the families relocated to the shackland are

from outside the area, much to the dismay of those who were living in the bushes in Strandfontein. Moses lived with her two younger children, aged six and seven, and her three-year-old grandchild, in an informal structure in the bush. With nothing but a plastic sheet over their heads and the sandy dunes beneath, she called on the City of Cape Town to give her the tools to rebuild her home. Her shack caught alight after a candle fell, resulting in a fire that ripped through the structures and left nothing but ashes. Moses is a domestic worker and her children attend Strandfontein Primary. After waiting for almost two weeks, help finally came on Friday. Mandy van Willingh has been living in Strandfontein for 35 years. She has been volunteering at the 7de Laan informal settlement for several years, helping the squatters empower themselves. She also assists in feeding the informal settlement’s residents. “I liaised with City officials shortly after the fire. Going back and forth with the City’s Disaster Management team has been a nightmare,” she fumes. “I am just thankful that the families have finally been relocated,

DISMAL: Until recently, the squatters living on the dunes in Clipper Road heard no word from the City after they begged officials to help them rebuild their homes. It was finally done, 11 days after they lost all their possessions. but it is distressing to think that those families had been left out in the cold and forced to brave the wet and cold conditions for so long,” van Willingh says. It appears as if the City wanted the affected families to rebuild their shacks in Clipper Road, she adds. With a shortage of low-cost housing, van Willingh believes the City is neglecting the poor. “There are no housing opportunities for people who live from

hand-to-mouth. There are many people who cannot even afford to buy a loaf of bread, so how they are expected to get a bond for a house is beyond me,” she says. Tandeka Gqada, the Mayoral Committee member for Housing, says the delay was “due to an investigation being conducted into the matter, as well as a consultation process with the host community”. Mario Oostendurp, chairperson of the Strandfontein East Ratepayers’ Association, says it is pre-

ferred that people from the area are relocated to the 7de Laan informal settlement. “The families who lived in Clipper Road had been living in Strandfontein for many years. However, formal accommodation would be the best solution for the squatters,” he says. The growing settlement is also a persistent worry for Oostendurp. “Someone needs to monitor it to ensure the squatter camp does not mushroom out of control,” he adds.

EASTRIDGE: UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Absent builder causes distress

LAILA MAJIET

An irate woman is crying foul, claiming a builder made off with over R30 000 of her money. But the builder, who says he had been hospitalised at the time, has pledged to complete the job. Jean Cupido from Eastridge claims to have been scammed out of her hard-earned cash after a Kuils River man failed to finish the job he had been paid for in full. Cupido has reached boiling point as she struggled to get in contact with the builder, Shahied Sauls. With half of the job complete, Cupido says her house is in a “complete mess”. “He started the job and is almost halfway through, but when the time came for him to arrive at work almost three months ago, he was a no-show,” she seethes. Sauls was hired to replace Cupido’s vibra-

crete with a solid wall, plaster the floors, replace the carpets, as well as install a new garage gate and doors. “He was supposed to lay the foundation for a wendy house as well, but this is nowhere near done,” Cupido says. With work to the tune of R39 000 still incomplete, she says she wants her money back. “Three months later, he has only now answered my calls after I informed him that I would take the matter to court,” she explains. Sauls, however, tells a very different story. “I was in hospital for almost a month and a half. I had informed my client that I would be unable to come to work until I had recovered,” he explains. But Cupido denies having received any communication from Sauls about his hospitalisation. She regrets not insisting on a written contract, and encourages others to insist on physical documentation. HEALTH: MITCHELL’S PLAIN HOSPITAL IS OPEN

New lease on life LAILA MAJIET

Healthcare in Mitchell’s Plain is being resuscitated. The new Mitchell’s Plain Hospital has finally opened its doors after being hamstrung by delays. Yesterday the first patients were

transferred from Lentegeur Hospital to the new medical facility on AZ Berman Drive. This marks the gradual phasingin at the new facility which has 11 wards and 270 beds. October marks the opening of the emergency centre, while the of-

ficial opening of the facility takes place on Tuesday 12 November. Provincial health minister Theuns Botha says the new medical facility is long overdue. “To a large extent, we as government neglected to build new facilities,” Botha says. Botha and Robin Carlisle, the provincial minister of transport and public works, toured the modern facility on Wednesday. Construction of the hospital began in January 2010, but completion of the facility was delayed after a fire broke out at the emergency centre in May last year. With a string of complaints from patients about Mitchell’s Plain Day Hospital, Botha hopes the new hospital will change residents’ experience at government facilities in the area. “I hope people would say that their experience has improved. We also need to address the wellness of our society and have to invest in preventing illness. It must become a place of healing,” he explains. Botha says the current inequalities in healthcare need to be addressed by building new hospitals and clinics. “This region needed 1300 beds but only had 600 beds. Together with the completion of the Khayelitsha Hospital and now the Mitchell’s Plain Hospital, we have made major strides towards better health services for our communities,” he says. The hospital was built at a cost of R533m with equipment to the tune of R99m. Carlisle believes the hospital will afford patients a more dignified experience when seeking healthcare. “After all the years of oppression there is no better commodity than dignity.” The project secured the services of 42 local contractors from Mitchell’s Plain and 28 from Philippi.

INSPECTION: Provincial health minister Theuns Botha inspects the equipment at the new Mitchell’s Plain Hospital. PHOTOS: LAILA MAJIET A total of 5 622 jobs were provided on-site as well as management training, Carlisle says. Principal construction agent Courage Karenyi, who supervised the building operations, says the hospital was designed to allow plenty of natural light, thus saving on electricity. Interior architect at Munnik Visser Ar-

chitects Ayesha Danyal, responsible for designing the hospital’s interior, says good healthcare design has been incorporated to enhance the patients’ experience.

TRAINS: PROJECT TO ROUTE SAFETY IN RIGHT DIRECTION

Metrorail to pilot ‘safe carriages’

TERESA FISCHER

A plan to have children-only carriages on Metrorail’s Southern Line has been amended to not be restricted to only pupils. The pilot project came after a determined trio of mothers rallied Metrorail to make trains safer for children. It resulted in an agreement that will reportedly ensure children are allocated two reserved carriages with security. But the move is being questioned

by a rail action group which points out that the chosen line is not a crime hotspot in comparison to other train routes. The pilot project will be tested from Monday 15 July. Mara Fleischer, Larraine Munro and Wendy Edwards decided too many school children had been mugged on trains. Following a third meeting with Metrorail representatives, Fleischer says: “They will go ahead with two safety carriages, but these will not be re-

served for [only] pupils.” Metrorail regional manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz confirms representatives of Metrorail Protection Services, Customer Operations and the Railway Police met with the group of parents to establish how existing rail security resources could be optimised to safeguard pupils using off-peak trains. He says about 60 pupils regularly use three specific trains between 14:00 and 16:00 in the week to commute between Rondebosch and Fish Hoek. Swartz says an arrangement where pupils will congregate in two adjoining carriages in the centre of these three specific trains will be tested from mid-July. He adds “security resources ordinarily deployed on these trains will keep an eye on them”. Although the carriages – one Metro and one MetroPlus – will be informally designated to pupils, these may be used by any fare-paying commuter. He adds the Railway Police and Metrorail Protection staff deployed at stations between Observatory and WALK THIS WAY: A pilot project consisting of two reserved carriages with adequate Fish Hoek would also be alerted to security on Metrorail’s Southern Line will be tested from 15 July.PHOTO: PHOTO24 these trains and would monitor them Van Minnen says statistics isas they draw into stations en route. riage? ROCKLANDS: UNITY AT ANTI-CRIME VIGIL

Glimmer of hope

LAILA MAJIET

Residents showed their support for victims of crime with a candlelight vigil at the Rocklands Civic Centre last week.

While the community gathered on Wednesday, shining their light of hope in the darkness, a gunshot rang out in the quiet evening sky. Rocklands resident Wayne Siebritz, says: “This is our fight. We have to unite against crime and show these thugs that we will not allow them to dominate our lives.” Organised by proportional representative ANC councillor Jeremia Thuynsma and the Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum, the vigil drew a crowd of young and old. Thuynsma says: “Let us keep shining that light and never give up hope no matter how challenging the situation may become.” This event serves to emphasise the importance of the community working together. Mitchell’s Plain CPF chairperson, Abie Isaacs, says everyone, at some time in their lives, would be a victim of crime whether directly or through a close relative or friend. “We need to stand together. People must report crime, no matter who the perpetrator is. Criminals must face the full arm of the law,” he says.

Armed robbery at McDonalds

LAILA MAJIET

It was business as usual at McDonalds at the Promenade Shopping Centre after staff were held up at the franchise on Saturday. After mayhem unfolded at the eatery, the suspects were soon apprehended. The pair was arrested along with three other accomplices later that day. Mitchell’s Plain police officials say two armed robbers entered the store outside the mall that afternoon, demanding cash from the staff. No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained during the robbery, says Fuzlin Sinclair, the operational services manager at the Promenade Shopping Centre. Police spokesperson Constable Jerome Voegt says the suspects fled on foot with a cash register in hand. “Our officers then spotted the suspects making off in a green Volkswagen minibus. The getaway car was parked in a street next to the mall,” he says. A shootout ensued as the suspects desperately tried to avoid capture. “One of the suspects fired several shots at our officers while driving in Morgen-

ster Road, Lentegeur. Several police vehicles gave chase and another shootout broke out in White Hall Lane in The Leagues,” Voegt adds. One of the suspects was injured in the shootout. The group, aged between 23 and 31, were finally apprehended in The Leagues following the high-speed car chase. A 9mm pistol and the stolen cash register were recovered. “The safety and security of shoppers and tenants is of the utmost importance to the mall’s management. We will continue to work with the police to assist them further in the investigation,” Sinclair adds. The Kenilworth McDonalds in Doncaster Road was also robbed on 7 June. Police say there is no connection between the incidents. This is the first time the Mitchell’s Plain outlet had been robbed since opening 10 years ago. Despite numerous attempts, restaurant management failed to respond to queries by People’s Post.

CAMPAIGN FOR FATHERS: ‘BRING A LITTLE LOVE’

Dad’s the word

TAURIQ HASSEN

For one in three children growing up without their fathers, one question remains unanswered: “Why did my dad leave?” According to recent statistics, nearly half of the country’s children are growing up with an absent but living dad. There are plenty of reasons for the fathers not being a factor, such as the impact of HIV/ Aids, cultural traditions, migration from rural to urban areas, tough economic realities and other complicated social and financial explanations. Hoping to restore the value of a father in the household is the MenCare campaign. Globally, an overwhelming amount of evidence confirms that engaged, responsive fa-

therhood and men’s participation in their children’s lives have positive effects for women, little ones and the men themselves. MenCare is a global fatherhood campaign looking to promote men’s involvement as equitable, non-violent fathers and caregivers in order to achieve family wellbeing and gender quality. It is coordinated by Promundo and the Sonke Gender Justice Network. Jane Kato-Wallace is a programme officer with Promundo and coordinates the global MenCare campaign to engage men in caregiving. “We need to provide spaces for men to reflect on the harmful norms that cause them to stifle the future potential of their children and instead promote efforts that support equality for children, for families, for all,” she says. The campaign was recently in Cape Town, where the first meeting of the MenCare Global Fatherhood campaign took place. One father making the most of his time with his two sons is Adam Bailey, who also learnt more about becoming a better father through MenCare. He lost his wife in a car accident, but says he was left with two precious little gifts. Only aged two and seven at the time, he struggled to adapt to life as a single parent, but slowly started receiving support from his family, friends and the community. “Both my boys were still young at the time of my wife’s death and I had to deal with that as well as looking after them. It was hard and there were times when I felt like giving up,” he says. For three years, both his boys had to live at their grandparents’ home, as Bailey

PEOPLE'S POST | MITCHELL'S PLAIN Tuesday, 2 July 2013

Get well soon, Tata

BEST WISHES: WISHES: Alice Cooke (left) says: “Everybody will always remember a man who fought for everyone’s rights and equality and who loved South Africa. We wish him well and he will remain in my prayers.” Beatrice De Wett (centre) says: “My greatest memory of Madiba is when I worked for the City of Cape Town many years ago and he visited. I actually got to meet with him and that was a very special moment for me. He was very down to earth and very decent. I wish him all the best.” Valda Willemse (right) says: “I met with Nelson Mandela in Mitchell’s Plain and I must say it was a real honour. I felt really proud to meet the man behind many people’s freedom. We need to keep him in our prayers and we hope he can still spend many more years with us.”

GREAT MEMORIES: MEMORIES: Derrick Coetzee had some very close encounters with Nelson Mandela after sharing a prison cell with him on Robben Island in 1976. “I used to collect the newspaper for him every morning before we sat at the table eating breakfast. I knew then already he was going to be a great leader. When he left prison, I knew he was going to achieve big things.”

CHRISTINE LOWE CHRISTINE LOWE says Mandela’s legacy is something she will always cherish. Asked what she admires most about him, she says: “His full laughter that warms hearts.”

JACKS CKSON ON MJODO is convinced South Africans don’t have to worry about the future when Mandela dies. “People are scared about what may come once Madiba passes, but for what?”

GREG ASHLEY ASHLEY-C -COOPER OOPER says whenever he hears the former president’s name, he can’t help but conjure up a specific image. “All I see is his face and his famous Madiba shirts.”

HOLDING ON: As the country holds its breath for news on former president Nelson Mandela’s health, Tatiana Calligeris (2) held his hand. She spent some time at the statue of Madiba at the V&A Waterfront as the icon entered his third week in hospital. PHOTO: NICOLE MCCAIN

A twist to black belt celebrations

LIAM MOSES

A

fter years of training and hours in a punishing grading, a group of karateka have chosen to celebrate earning their black belts with charity work. The six karate practitioners qualified for their black belts after a three-hour training session and 20 fights against different opponents on Saturday. But instead of spending Monday recovering, they chose to buy food and other items for the Elonwabeni Child and Family Centre in Colorado Park, Mitchell’s Plain. They delivered it to the NGO themselves. Sensei Trevor Rustin, branch chief at the Mitchell’s Plain ShinKyokushin Karate Dojo, says the initiative will round-off the education of the students. “This will be a memory that will last for a lifetime and they will never forget. They will always be conscious about the community work they need to do,” he says. The centre cares for abused children and children who come from dysfunctional families, referred by the Department of Social Development or the courts. Spectators paid R20 to watch Saturday’s grading session and, instead of pocketing the money, Rustin chose to use it for the charity initiative. The dojo held a similar initiative in 2008, when spectators were required to take along tins of food to watch the grading. Portlands resident Mubash’shir Cader (13) trained for seven years to earn his black belt. The Islamia College pupil says the sport has taught him a lot more than

just how to defend himself. “I have learned that you shouldn’t give up and you will always reach your goal. I have faced many challenges, but I still got here,” he says. “I put in a lot of effort, so I am excited and happy. My physical abilities are stronger and it has also helped me with my school work and confidence.” Cader and the five other black belts started their grading on Saturday 22 June, when they underwent a technical grading to test whether they met the standards required from a black belt. But Rustin says students need more than technical ability and physical fitness to become black belts. “You also have to demonstrate that you have the character to be a black belt. We aren’t looking for bullies or people who want to be macho,” Rustin says. “You have to demonstrate that you are an example at school and at home, choose the correct friends and not succumb to peer pressure.” The karateka who received their black belts are Clayton Gordon, Mubash’shir Cader, Enzoh Mellem, Jodie Roman, Jordan Bourne and Kaylin Stubbs.

Caledonian Roses racked up a third consecutive win to boost their Division Two title credentials on Saturday. The Newfields side have set their sights on winning the league this year and they confirmed their place among the front runners with a 24-17 victory over Cape Town’s TechGardens. Callies now hold third place on the table, with All Saints in second and Masiphumelele RFC in first. Coach Noor Masoet praised his team for putting together the run of victories after going through a rough patch at the beginning of June. “I feel proud because of the way the boys have fought. They played the last 10 or 15 minutes with 13 men; that shows character,” Masoet says. “Now we are on the right path, getting ourselves back together after a bad run the last few weeks. The guys picked themselves up and I must congratulate them on their performance.” Callies started the month with two defeats at home, losing 6-9 to Kylemore and 17-18 in their next game against Blue Stars. Masoet’s side rediscovered their winning touch the following week, beating rivals Watsonia 33-15 before edging out Young Wesleys 31-24. According to their coach Callies underwent an attitude adjustment to return to winning ways. “Something crept into them and they just lost composure and commitment, but they

stood up (against Tech-Gardens) and showed the right attitude and came back strongly.” Roses were fortunate to add the third victory to their record as Tech-Gardens matched them in every aspect of the game, except goal-kicking. Although both sides scored three tries each, Roses’ fullback Nur Salie also added three conversions and a penalty to the points tally. Tech-Garden’s goal-kickers misses two conversions and three penalty attempts. Despite the fortunate nature of the win, Masoet and his troops are looking to build on the performance, with the hopes of finishing in first place. “I only want first (place); there isn’t a second for me. First place is the priority for the club. We want to make the club what it once was – the best club.” In other results from the weekend’s games, SK Walmers secured a narrow 26-25 away at Helderberg in Super League A, while False Bay beat rivals Villager 44-0 in Super League B. In Premier League A, Collegians lost 10-8 to Macassar and Surrey Estate Rangers beat Paarl 57-7. MIT Rangers beat Langa 14-8 in Premier League B, while Violets beat Lagunya 33-18 and Hamediehs edged out Raithy Universals 13-12 in Division One. Relegation threatened Young Stars beat Kylemore 5-0 in Division Two, while Perseverance beat Temperance 17-11 in Division Three and Progress beat Young Brothers 2210 in Division Four.

KO Challenge finalists named LIAM MOSES

T

he gruelling play-off rounds of the 10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge came to an end on Sunday, with 13 teams sealing qualification for the finals. Cape Town’s premier under-17 tournament started at the beginning of June, with over 100 teams fighting to join hosts Santos, defending champions Ajax Cape Town and National First Division (NFD) side Chippa United in the tournament finals. However, with thousands of rands worth of prizes and bragging rights at stake only the best teams have qualified for the finals in August. Teams from across Cape Town have survived the cut and both the northern and southern suburbs will be strongly represented. Parow based NFD team Vasco da Gama, Kraaifontein City, Kuils River FC, Islands Rovers, Bishop Lavis FC and Atlantic Nacional make up the northern contingent, while Claremont’s ASD Academy, Cape United, Grassy Park’s Crusaders, Green Point Selesians, Hanover Park FC, Mitchell’s Plain’s Kenpark United and Pinelands club Old Mutual Academy represent the south.

Should one of the qualifiers not be able to participate, Two Oceans Academy, United FC or Eastern Rovers will take their place. One of the most surprising omissions from the list of finalist is Mitchell’s Plain’s Woodlands United, who finished in seventh place at the finals last year. Woodlands finished in third place in group four after a solitary victory, with Bishop Lavis in first on nine points and Old Mutual in second on six points. Lavis were one of only five teams to finish the second phase with a perfect record, along with Crusaders, Hanover Park, ASD Academy, Atlantic Nacional. Hanover Park topped the scoring charts in the play-off rounds with eleven goals in their three games, while Crusaders were a close second with 10. ASD hit the back of the net seven times, but were the only team not to concede a single goal. While most will be backing Ajax and Santos to take the title again, Hanover Park, Crusaders and ASD could push last year’s finalists for the crown. The 10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge will take place from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 August.
