Armed with paint, runny cement slurry and paint brushes, the City of Cape Town’s Gang Unit was ready for action during yesterday’s cleanup operation. The walls of the park and gardens in Buffalo and Elephant streets have been cleared of gang taggings. The names of gangs operat ing in this neighbourhood were previously sprawled across these cement slabs. While many prepare to hit the sack and call it a day, a group of dedicated residents gear up for patrols to assist the “under-resourced” Strandfontein Police Station. A high rate of house break-ins, armed robberies and a single blue-light patrol van has prompted community safety structures to step up their efforts in fighting crime. leave the comfort of their homes to patrol. While the crime rate in this seaside suburb has taken a dive, letting down one’s guard is not advised. So says Sandy Schuter, chairperson of the local community policing forum. People’s Post joined the community safety structures on patrols recently. Young and old were out in full force for the mass patrol. Parents walked the beat with their children in tow, while some residents brought along their furry four-legged friends. The large group made their way through Bayview and San Remo, starting their patrols at the park in Gemsbok Street. Residents came out of their homes to see what all the fuss was about. Many welcomed the patrols. Rayno Damond (66) is one of the oldest residents who patrol the area. Before leaving home to take his wife to work, he drives along the bus routes to ensure commuters are safe. Helping in the fight against crime is everyone’s responsibility, he believes. “I often patrol because the scourge of drugs must be eradicated from the fabric of this community.” The Strandfontein resident of 17 years says the area’s makeup has changed drastically over the years. “Not only has crime escalated, but the way in which children grow up has changed, as many youth turn to drugs,” he says. Alice Lewis (46) was also out on the streets on Friday night. Patrolling with her eight-year-old daughter, she believes there is hope for Strandfontein. With sore feet and tired eyes, she says patrolling was well worth it. Her car was broken into just two months ago. “Before I could walk and sit wherever I wanted to. I was never scared of being robbed or attacked. The only thing I feared when I moved into the area in 1997, was the many insects and snakes which slithered by,” Lewis says. A young man was apprehended by police during the patrols for driving without a licence. The youth was spotted at a suspected drug house in Bayview. The area was otherwise “fairly quiet” during the mass patrol between 21:00 and midnight. Schuter says: “There is a lot more activity after midnight. We find our problem times are in the early hours of the morning.” The Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum joined the mass patrols. Forum chairperson Abie Isaacs and secretary Lynn Phillips were present. Meanwhile, a roadblock was also held in the area that night. The neighbourhood watch assisted the police at the roadblock before hitting the streets to patrol. Police arrested motorists for driving under the influence and other crimes, Schuter confirms. “Dagga was confiscated from a group of youth from Lansdowne. They said they bought the drugs at a house in Colorado Park.” V Mass patrols will continue every Friday and Saturday. Residents will meet at the park in Gemsbok Street at 21:00. VANGUARD DRIVE: RESIDENTS PLAN PICKET PROTEST

Can’t ingore the signs LAILA MAJIET @laila_newsie

M

itchell’s Plain residents are set to take to the streets in a counter protest against squatters living at the Siqalo informal settlement on Vanguard Drive soon. Pickets are now being planned in the run up to the court case which resumes on Monday 12 May. The landowners are in the process of obtaining an eviction order. Highguard Crisis Committee spokesperson Zoraya Petersen says she has also received requests from residents to picket outside the Cape High Court. “We are law-abiding citizens and want to fight our cause within the ambits of the law. I will apply for permits as we need our cause to be highlighted and for the public to know the challenges we face every day,” she says. Dwindling support for the cause is however a concern to the committee. “People are complacent. Everyone complains on Facebook, but very few people show up for the pickets. If we want people to take us seriously we need to show up in our numbers and make sure our voices are heard,” Petersen insists. Residents are being urged to participate in the mass pickets on Saturday 3 and 10 May. “Some say the pickets are a waste of time, but disruptive protests by squatters have halted since we took a stand,” she says.

Meanwhile, many Mitchell’s Plain residents fed-up with rising crime levels in community’s neighbouring the settlement, are adamant the squatter camp must be relocated. Ashton De Bique’s Rondevlei home was recently burgled. While he cannot say for certain the suspect lives at Siqalo, he believes the informal settlement is a haven for crime. “It provides an easy escape for criminals operating in our neighbourhood,” he says. Crime levels have soared in the area since the informal settlement mushroomed out of control, De Bique believes. “I don’t like feeling like a prisoner in my home. I want to know that I can leave my home with peace of mind,” he says. Concerned resident Fatima Anthony Cloete encourages the community to get involved. “When squatters burned tyres on Vanguard Drive, everyone travelling on that road was affected. We need people to show their support by joining the pickets.” Residents are now also considering to dig deep into their pockets to rid their neighbourhood of crime. The suggestion to hire private security was tabled at a recent public meeting. While the numbers were low, many of those who attended were keen on the idea. “The police cannot do it on their own. How many more houses must be broken into before action is taken?” one resident said. V Call Petersen on 082 632 0176.

Giving skills an urgent boost LAILA MAJIET @laila_newsie

A

newly re-launched skills centre has opened its doors in Mitchell’s Plain. Established by the local education forum in partnership with the ANC constituency office, the centre aims to help improve the lives of youth living in the area. The facility is situated at the shopping centre next to the Westridge Civic Centre. Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel and Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel attended the launch last week, inviting businesses to partner with the Mitchell’s Plain Skills Centre and help open doors for young entrepreneurs. Frank Fredericks, director of the facility, says students graduate with skills they can use. “We want to teach people to manage a business and all the complexities of being an entrepreneur. It is about excellence in empowering skills development,” he says. With big plans for 2014, Fredericks says one of their main objectives is to develop a mobile bakery. “Students will learn to bake bread and other confectionery. Some of this will be sold, but we will also donate some of it to schools for their feeding schemes, as hunger is a big challenge at many schools in Mitchell’s Plain,” he says. The launch served as an invitation to partner, Manuel says. “We do not have to create talent, we have to create opportunities.” He encouraged businesses to get involved and assist the skills centre in growing their offerings to young people. The launch, held just weeks before the general election, is not a cheap ploy to gain votes, says Manuel . “This is not about votes, but rather about building a sense of pride in this community. We did

not start this project when the election date was announced as it is what we do on the 8th, 9th and 10th of May that is important.” Speaking at the launch, Patel said the skills centre is an alternative to a life of crime and drugs. “Here you have a skills centre where people, many of them volunteers, are working hard to give economic opportunities to youth who need an alternative to tik and crime.” Meanwhile, officials from the Mitchell’s Plain branch of Disabled People South Africa says the facility is not accessible to all. Provincial secretary Anthony George says disabled people are again “ignored”. “There is no ramp at the entrance of the facility and the double doors would both need to be opened for us to enter. The actual centre is also upstairs and there is no lift,” he says. George is expected to meet with the centre’s management today to discuss their grievances. Fredericks maintains the facility centre is all-inclusive. “We do not exclude anyone on the basis of race, religion or disability. The shopping centre in which we are situated does not belong to us. “However, it is accessible to all. The shopping centre is being used by persons with wheelchairs on a regular basis,” he says. Not all training rooms are inaccessible, he adds. “Some of the rooms are on the ground floor and we are flexible in terms of where classes are held. If the numbers demand that we use a room downstairs, we will do so to accommodate the disabled.” He hopes to table the concerns of George at today’s meeting. “This will be discussed and presented to the landlord and property managers of the shopping centre.”

with reports that police were fired upon with live ammunition. “I do not want this for the people of Mitchell’s Plain. I have witnessed and experienced how people’s lives are put in danger and have learned the hard way that it is not worth the risk,” she insists. A total of 18 suspects were arrested for public violence during the 2011 land invasion. Spokesperson of the MPHA Mariam Essop says invading the land will not solve the problems many backyarders face. “I did not invade the land in 2011, but often came down to the site to show my support for those who did. It took me back to the years of apartheid where law enforce-

ment agencies were brutal and ruthless,” she says. Community worker Sulyman Stellenboom initiated the door-to-door housing campaign. He says the decision to invade the land was made by the people. “We gathered on the field two weeks ago and that is when the community decided they are fedup and want to take this action,” he says. He recently posted the details of the planned land invasion on Facebook, but distances himself from claims that he is the mastermind behind the looming land invasion. “This is what they decided and I communicated that to the public. There is nothing I can do to stop them,” Stellenboom adds.

he Mitchell’s Plain Housing Association (MPHA) has distanced itself from a planned land invasion. Disgruntled backyard dwellers have threatened to occupy land in Tafelsig after it was announced that no new housing developments are on the cards for Mitchell’s Plain in the next three years. Hundreds of backyarders descended on an open field next to the Swartklip Sports Ground every Saturday for the last three weeks to discuss the housing crisis in Mitchell’s Plain. About 4 000 backyarders occupied this land in 2011, demanding houses. However, the City of Cape Town secured a court interdict to evict the squatters. A group of backyarders and those on the housing waiting list are now gearing up to again invade this vacant property. The planned land invasion started as a door-to-door campaign to rally support to apply pressure on the City of Cape Town to deliver housing in Mitchell’s Plain in the next financial year. A petition was signed by aggrieved backyarders and concerned residents and was to be presented to council later this month. However, this has not happened. Mary Taka, chairperson of the local housing association, was one of the residents who occupied the City-owned land in Tafelsig in 2011. Flashbacks of violent clashes with the police and army during apartheid is how she remembers the outcome of that land invasion. Police used water cannons, teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the backyarders,

MARINE LIFE: SASSI ‘TRAFFIC LIGHT’ INDICATES WHICH SEAFOOD TO EAT

Something fishy on the menu CHEVON BOOYSEN @ChevonBooysen

T

here are plenty of fish in the sea. But this may no longer be true if sustainable fishing isn’t practised. Sustainable fishing is now being pushed so the public – especially eateries, fishers and chefs – become more aware of the threats aquatic life is facing. The Southern African Seafood Sustainability Initiative (Sassi) is aimed at educating and informing seafood lovers about the advantages of sustainable fishing and also the danger points to sealife if it is not practised properly. Sassi aims to inform and educate all South Africans about marine conservation issues. The programme includes training of fishermen, working with retailers, as well as utilising consumers as a market incentive for better and more sustainable fishing practises. Manager at the WWF Seafood Consumer Outreach Janine Basson says: “WWF-Sassi has three main objectives, namely to promote voluntary compliance to the law – specifically, the South African Marine Living Resources Act – through education and awareness, shift seafood consumer demand away from over-exploited species to more sustainable options and to create awareness around marine conservation issues,” she says. Basson says the amount of fish removed from the sea over the last few decades has spurred on the preservation initiative. “A quarter of total fisheries are now classified as overfished or depleted, and another half of the remaining global fisheries are being fished as hard as they can be. Overfishing, and its associated environmental im-

and will remain on plates for years to come. pacts, is our biggest global environmental challenge alongside those posed by climate change. “Here in South Africa, the situation is not much better, as 79% of key South African linefish species are considered to be overexploited or collapsed by experts,” she says. To curb these numbers from rising at an exponential rate she suggests sustainable fishing. “Sustainable fishing is where effective and transparent regulatory systems are in place which manages fisheries resources

through an holistic ecosystems approach to fisheries. “Rather, the ecosystem must be managed as a whole as opposed to target species managed in isolation.” So, what stays and what is off the menu? Through a seafood guide, WWF-Sassi provides consumers with the information needed to make sustainable and environmentally friendly choices. “The easy-to-use ‘traffic light’ system informs consumers of which seafood species can be eaten with a clear conscience (green),

which should be regarded with concern because of specified reasons (orange), and which should be avoided because they are either considered unsustainable or illegal to sell in South Africa (red). The list encourages consumers to always ask three simple questions of their seafood: What is it called? Where is it from and how was it caught or farmed?” This information can be obtained using the WWF-Sassi website or their mobisite which facilitates viewing of the Sassi website using a mobile phone. “Additionally, the nifty FishMS brings the list to you via an SMS. By texting the name of the fish to the number the service will send you an immediate response telling you whether to tuck in, think twice or avoid completely. There is also an app that consumers can download for free from the appropriate app store.” Although aquaculture, or fish farming, can be an answer to overfishing if done in a sustainable manner using sustainable feed sources, Basson says more and more restaurants and eateries are coming to the fore when it comes to sustainable fishing. “Leading chefs in the hospitality industry, which Sassi sees as the gatekeepers to influencing consumer palates, are coming on board with Sassi and incorporating the messaging into their business operations. We work closely with key players in the industry to highlight and celebrate the work that is being undertaken.” Ultimately, our choice of one type of seafood over another really does matter to the health of our marine environment in the country. Basson says: “Remember: you have a choice. Make it green!” V Visit wwfsassi.mobi or sms “fish” 079 499 8795

8 NEWS NIKITA SYL VESTER says she got a Brazil ian blowout not because she needed it, but she wanted to see what all the hype was about. “I would not do it again, because it didn’t last long and there are other managea ble products that work on my hair.” PHO TOS: SUPPLIED

ROBYN MY BURGH is pro Brazilian, be cause she knew her facts before her successful blowout. “My hairdresser in formed me about the dan gers of fake products and I researched products before I had it done. I would do it again, because my hair is more manageable.”

PEOPLE'S POST | MITCHELL'S PLAIN Thursday, 24 April 2014

ELEANOR FORTUIN says her Brazilian blowout last ed only a month. “I have extremely cur ly hair so the products did not last long. I won’t try it again because I know they add dangerous chemicals, but I am still open to other prod ucts that can manage my hair.” MELISSA FEB RUARIE had a Brazilian blow out because she wanted to have “more manageable” hair, even if it would only be a temporary solution. “I will never do it again, because the smell was horrible and I wasn’t warned about the day long process.”

BEAUTY: ‘DANGEROUS CONCENTRATIONS’ OF CHEMICAL

Straightening a ‘health risk’ T

ired of frizzy, unmanageable hair? It’s best to get clued up before you get that Brazilian treatment. A study by UCT’s dermatology department has found dangerous concentrations of formaldehyde in seven brands sold in South Africa. According to a statement, formaldehyde exists as a liquid, known as formalin, in cosmetic products and is unstable in its gaseous state. Researchers at UCT have found that most commercial “Brazilian keratin type’’ hairstraightening products tested in a study contain unacceptably high and dangerous concentrations of formaldehyde. The study was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatologists in February. It was led by associate professor Nonhlanhla Khumalo in the Division of Dermatology. Brazilian keratin treatment (BKT) and similar hair-straightening products fix and retain a straight shape even when the hair is wet and their popularity is increasing worldwide, says the statement. A Brazilian mortician is said to have in-

vented the method. The researchers tested seven brands sold in South Africa at the time of the study. All seven products were advertised as international brands, but the study was unable to confirm that all the tested products were imported from Brazil. The maximum safe concentration of formaldehyde set by the US Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel and by most countries, including South Africa, is less than 0.2%. Of the seven commercial BKT brands studied, six had formaldehyde levels that ranged from 0.96% to 1.4%. That is five times higher than the legal limit and these included five brands labelled “formaldehyde-free”. “The concentration of formaldehyde in the products we tested confirms recent international data, this in spite of much media attention and regulatory concern,” say the authors of the study. “Heat straightens hair by breaking down temporary hydrogen bonds found between keratin filaments, but the effect is lost when the hair gets wet. The convenience and popularity of long-lasting straight hair has resulted in a flood of products. These brands are known by various names.” Writing in the South African Medical Journal, Khumalo said formaldehyde is associated with eye and skin reactions and adverse pregnancy outcomes. “It is classified as a carcinogen or cancer-causing agent. Chronic exposure to high concentration is associated with respiratory and blood cancers such as leukaemia and lymphomas,” she wrote. According to the researchers, high concentrations of formaldehyde, for example in the wood industry, are permitted under strict air control regulations. This is not the case in most salons where the products are used. Authors say the study is limited, as they have not been able to include all internationally available BKT products. “The false labelling of products as formaldehyde-free exposes unsuspecting consumers and hairdressers to adverse effects,” the authors say. “Industry monitoring is needed to improve compliance and protection of hairdressers and consumers.”

art of the City of Cape Town’s draft budget proposal currently under review includes the restructuring of policies for rates relief to poor residents. Johan van der Merwe, head of the City’s finance portfolio committee, explained how the City’s policy would be structured during the next financial year which starts on Tuesday 1 July, provided the provisional budget is accepted. RELIEF: Rates rebates are once again on the cards for the City’s “Part of the con- poorer communities. cept budget is the concept policy on indigent relief. Born-frees won’t vote

More than a million “Born-frees” have not registered to vote in the coming election. A study was done by the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and results showed that only 33.6% of those born after 1994 have registered. This means only 646 313 out of a possible 1.9 million born-frees are ready to tick the voting ballot. It also showed that 60% of South Africans in their twenties and 90% of people older than 30 are registered to vote. Here’s what People’s Post readers had to say.

VAL WATT thinks there is no interest in registering because Bornfrees don’t believe in what they are voting for. “They believe the vote has already been cast and their one vote won’t make a differ ence, but the truth is it makes a difference.”

ANTHONY DAVIDS says the name does not depict the truth because most Bornfrees don’t feel free yet. “Apartheid is still alive, because it’s just a turn of hand. They don’t see change so they don’t vote.”

DENVER FRANSMAN thinks Bornfrees do not as sociate their goals with the political parties, be cause most of the youth want to work abroad. “I know of many bornfrees who plan to move out of South Africa.” PHOTO: JODY FORTUIN

RIAAN STEYN believes the youth are unmotivated because they don’t see change or improvement. “The reality is the political parties need to speak through social media to get through to the youth and actually show them they are important too.”

ANN WELMA says the youth are not interested because they don’t believe their vote will make a difference. “It’s a shame that parents who are bitter, influence their children too. That is why there are so many unregistered Bornfrees.”

2014

BELINDA MNTUYEDWA believes there is still too much corruption while the current party leads. “If the president steps down and makes room for a new party, maybe then the Bornfrees will take action and be more involved politically.”

XOLELWA JIYA says it’s different now that apart heid is over. “The youth of today are wrapped in technology. There is nothing for them to fight for, so they don’t feel the need to vote.”

TRANSPORT: MILITARY VETERANS WANT PAC HEROES HONOURED

Ex-Apla soldiers have street fever NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain

A

group of The Azanian People’s Liberation Army (Apla) military veterans are lobbying to have several main streets across the city renamed to honour PAC heroes. Claiming that the renaming of street and buildings has predominantly reflected the ANC’s struggle against apartheid, the former soldiers are hoping to honour PAC members who were sentenced to jail and fought in the struggle. The organisation will consider areas such as Kensington with neu-

trally named streets, such as numerical avenues, as well as a number of busy routes, says Apla chairperson Kwedi Mkalipi. Mayoral Committee member for Transport Brett Herron says all streets across the metropole are fair game for renaming proposals. “As part of our commitment to creating an inclusive city, we have a policy in place for the renaming of the streets and public places. We would therefore encourage the community to make an application for the renaming of these streets in accordance with the Naming Policy,” he says. The committee assesses recommenda-

tions on renaming proposals that have been submitted for consideration, Herron says. “Any person or organisation within the City of Cape Town’s boundaries is entitled to propose the renaming of a street or the naming of a public place, City-owned building, facility or artefact.” he says. The military veterans’ proposal is to rename Voortrekker Road after Imam Haron, who was tortured and killed at the Maitland Police Station. However, other areas are included in the discussions, Mkalipi says. Swartklip Road in Mitchell’s Plain will be named after Barry Desai if the proposals are accepted. Desai was a former city councillor

Toyota on course with hybrid concept WHEELS24 @Wheels24 Toyota’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered car, the Fuel Cell Vehicle concept (FCV), will soon become a reality. The automaker believes it’s a major but logical step, as it builds on the success it has achieved with hybrids, such as its popular Prius, over the past 15 years. Executive vice-president of Toyota, Karl Schlicht, says: “Our unique hybrid history and experience has proven invaluable for the next big leap. In 2010, we promised our first fuel cell car for 2015 and we are fully on track to honour our commitment.” Schlicht says hydrogen is easy to store, is better at capturing renewable

energies than batteries and can be produced anywhere. “Taking these facts into account reinforces how Toyota is convinced fuel cell technology can deliver our ultimate goal of zero emissions and sustainable transport.” The FCV sedan concept will pioneer its new technology. Schlicht explains the car gives “clear hints” of the design of the production version to be delivered in 2015, and that with the benefit of a high energy density fuel stack and a maximum 100kW it “will have the potential to cover more than 800km on a tank of fuel”. The 700 bar hydrogen tank holds 156F for a potential range of 830km. Toyota and BMW entered into a partnership to further fuel cell research and development.

It configures the anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution and traction control for off-road use, activates hill climb assist and gearshift points of the auto transmission. All models are equipped with an automatic post-collision braking system and a coasting function – only available with eight-speed auto. The coasting function utilises the vehicle’s kinetic energy when driving downhill or when acceleration is not needed. The optional automatic distance control (ADC) has been enhanced. It uses a radar sensor integrated into the front of the car to detect distance from the car in front, maintain a pre-selected speed and automatically brake or accelerate in traffic. The ADC now includes an emergency braking function and can automatically pull away in stop-and-go traffic.

ew vehicle sales for March held up reasonably well and were virtually unchanged compared to the same period in 2013, reports the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa). In March 2014, 55 363 new vehicles were registered which was an 87-vehicle decline or 0.2% drop compared to the 55 450 vehicles sold in March 2013. The consumer-driven car segment recorded a year-on-year decline of 2.2%. Naamsa says in a statement: “Prospects for the balance of the year would continue to be affected by subdued economic growth, above inflation new vehicle price increases as a result of exchange rate weakness, and upward pressure on interest rates. “Consumer sentiment remained under pressure due to high levels of indebtedness, sharp increases in energy and transport costs and e-tolling in Gauteng.” It says these factors would influence consumer demand in the case of the new car market. Naamsa says: “The new car market remained under pressure during March 2014 and at 36 798 units reflected a decline of 814 units or a fall of 2.2% compared to the 37 612 cars sold in March 2013.”

Beemer recall over bolt defect WHEELS24 @Wheels24

Export sales reflected a decline of 3122 vehicles or 11.2% fall from 27 782 vehicles exported in March 2013 to 24 660 units in 2014. Industry sales comprised of 85.8% dealer sales, 5% to government, 4.7% vehicle rental industry and 4.5% to industry corporate fleets. Domestic sales of light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini-buses were up 3.7% compared to the same period in 2013. Vehicle sales in the medium and heavy truck segments reflected a mixed performance with a decline of 6.1% in medium commercial vehicles and a 14.9% increase in heavy trucks and buses. Naamsa says: “Domestic trading conditions were anticipated to remain difficult with pressure on margins, particularly in the new car and light commercial vehicle sectors. “As a result of the challenging macro-environment, general consensus was that the domestic market in 2014 was likely to be flat and might even show modest declines in the various segments compared to 2013.” Naamsa reports that vehicle exports should benefit from improving global economic conditions and barring domestic supply disruptions, could show strong growth during the second half of 2014, particularly in respect of vehicle exports to Asia, Africa and Europe.

BMW is recalling 489 000 vehicles worldwide due to a possible engine-bolt defect. The biggest markets affected are China with 232 000 vehicles and the US with 156 000 vehicles. A total of 3120 BMWs in South Africa are affected by the company’s voluntary recall. According to BMW the recall is a precautionary measure: “BMW is taking the precaution of checking the bolts on the Vanos unit in selected vehicles with six-cylinder en-

gines. Depending on the results, the bolts or the Vanos unit will be replaced.” The Vanos unit is a variable valve timing system produced by BMW. BMW communications manager Edward Makwana says: “We will be contacting all the affected customers to check the Vanos unit on the affected vehicles. Depending on the results of this check, either the bolts or the complete Vanos unit will be replaced. “Vehicles will spend about four hours in the BMW workshop and this service will be free.”

EDITORIAL COMMENT

Reboot

For city slickers a day in the country can be a good thing. Refreshing even. An hour’s drive out of the city can help you replenish your flagging reserves, restock your memory bank and be the opiate that your spiritual self needs to revive. You would be leaving behind the mad rush that is city life. The one where the seasons are fast-tracked to the tune of the shopping tills. Christmas comes early every year. In October already! This is followed shortly by Valentine’s Day. Another hyped-up commercialised non-event trained upon your purse strings, where guilt – not love – determines the size of the flowers, outfit and teddy bear. Such a shame that how much you love him or her is determined by your wallet. It also shows such predictability and no hint of imagination. With hardly any breathing space, the Easter holidays creep up upon us. And then comes Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and, coming full circle, Christmas is back again. Then we groan about how we’re going on that diet, following healthy lifestyles and we will visit that dear elderly aunt in the retirement home. Much like the promises to meet up again at family funerals, very little comes of these plans. They’re just words we repeat to ease the conscience. We’re on a perpetual treadmill of expectations from others and ourselves. We shift and shape, make plans and diarise, we WhatsApp and Facebook. We “like” and LOL, and rush about in a social networking frenzy. Throw in the horror that is this April with all these additional holidays and anyone would run for the hills. Just once it would soothe the soul and save the sanity to get back to nature where the seasons, unfailingly, follow each other in a natural rhythm untainted by greed. At the very least, switch off your cellphone and laptop and inhale. It’s best to exhale too.

Treat others with respect

The saying goes to speak the truth and the truth will set you free; also, treat others as you want to be treated. When a person or group forms a community organisation, does a community project or (performs) acts of kindness towards (others), some of those who are financially secure will have nothing good to say about these (people) or organisations who want to help the less fortunate. They will criticise the helpers by (saying) they are bringing criminal elements into the neighbourhood. Some of the degrading (names) the less fortunate (and) homeless are called include bergies, suiplappe, vagrants and bosslapers. I recently committed a chronic community sin by daring to give a homeless person a marked trolley so that he can legally operate his recycling business. I have received negative comments (about my) initiative. I want to make it crystal clear I am against people who illegally obtain trolleys or dirt bins and I will be the first to execute a citizen’s arrest if I see (anyone) conveying stolen or suspected stolen goods in a trolley, vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, pram or on a skateboard. On the subject of crime, law-abiding peo-

ple who so (easily) point fingers should point out and warn neighbours that their children are drug addicts who steal from their parents so that we can be on the (alert) for (the safeguarding of) our own properties. We also want to hear from families of chronic alcoholics who drive while (under the influence) and become potential road killers. To those who have problem family members and who point fingers, please rather raise your hands to God and pray for the salvation of your family. Dare people call them tikkoppe or dronkies? No, there will be lawsuits or criminal actions. We would like families to tell us of their (relatives) who, at ungodly hours, do illegal road racing and so become road terrorists, disturbing the peace and breaking speed limits in our neighbourhoods. We also request that when some in your family dump illegally to please ask them to stop or report them. If you don’t you are also an eco violator. When we apply names to others in future first take a good look in your home and see it does not apply to your family. KEITH BLAKE

How can I get an RDP house? I’m a single mother of two. I’m 27 years old. Can you please tell me how do I go about applying for an RDP house. My wages is R2300 a month and I’m permanently employed. I’m staying in a separate entrance and am paying R1700 excluding electricity in Rondevlei. ANON, Email Tandeka Gqada, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements, responds: As a single parent with financial dependants, the reader can apply for a Council housing opportunity. We would advise her to complete a housing application form and an employer’s report, and hand these in at any housing estate office with certified copies of her barcoded identity document, her children’s birth cer-

tificates and, if applicable, her marriage or divorce certificates. She would also have to provide proof of the children’s dependency. The applicant must be a South African citizen, or in possession of a permanent residence permit; not be the beneficiary of a government housing subsidy and must be legally competent to sign a contract. Once her details have been captured on the housing database, she will be sent a letter with her registration number and application date. It will be her responsibility to keep her details up to date, which can be done by visiting any housing office and quoting her reference number. The City also provides opportunities for residents to rent units at reduced rates. For more information, please contact the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089.

Pascoe: shocked at jumping ship I am saddened by former chairperson of the Cape Town Metro, Grant Pascoe’s, decision to resign from the DA to join the ANC. Pascoe cut his political teeth within the DA for 13 years and was well respected within the party. He chaired the metro meetings with discerning authority and diplomacy, resolving conflict issues swiftly and certainly earned my respect. Although a comparatively young politician, Pascoe is well seasoned and versed with party procedures and protocols. His sudden jumping ship has left many flabbergasted, and during my brief encounters with him, Pascoe displayed no signs of unhappiness with the DA. It is strange that not a shred of dissatisfaction was noticeable. My only conclusion is that although he displayed excellent leadership as metro chairperson, he performed poorly in the DAled City’s performance evaluation assessment. Pascoe alleges that DA leader Helen Zille is not sincere with coloured people and victimises those who disagree with her. Could he not in his position as chairperson of the metro and hailing from the Western Cape’s largest constituency, Mitchell’s Plain, use his influence and bring Zille’s alleged insincerity to the attention of supporters? The ANC is often accused of the latter. The DA expounds an open opportunity society, free of any discrimination as an important element in its manifesto. Transparency and free speech is encouraged in all its structures. Hence, it is difficult to believe Pascoe’s allegations. My perception is that although Pascoe is fairly charismatic, he does not have a large following or political clout to entice supporters to follow suit and change their allegiance to do significant damage to the DA. Is Pascoe merely being used by the ANC because he is coloured, and they are hopeful that he will help secure additional votes to win the much contested Western Cape? Methinks not. Slower times in Two Oceans

FIGHTING FIT; Sev eral members of the Nantes Running Group, which was established just three months ago, finished the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon on Satur day. One group member completed the Ultra Marathon, while everyone else pictured finished the Half Marathon. The group is based at the Parktown Sports Complex.

Runners from Lesotho snatched two of the top three spots in the men’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon on Saturday, while Russian athletes dominated the women’s race. Lesotho’s Lebenya Nkoka won the men’s race in a time of 03:09:52 and his compatriot Masilo Matjiane finished third in 03:12:00. Second place went to South African veteran Hendrick Ramaala who finished his first Two Oceans Ultra in 03:11:33 Nkoka, who finished ninth last year, attributed his victory to focused altitude training, speed work and strong coaching support. “We work hard as a group and train together at high altitudes,” he said. The team receive significant support from the Lesotho Ministry of Gender and Youth, and Sports and Recreation, Nkoka added. In the women’s race it was third-time lucky for Russian runner Nina Podnebesnova, who finally won after placing fifth last year and 2011. She crossed the finish line in a time of 03:40:07, while Ethiopian Shitaye Debellu finish three minutes behind her in 03:43:37. Podnebesnova attributed her victory to a change in coach. For the second year running, Russian twins Elena and Olesya Nurgalieva didn’t perform as they had hoped, as they both battled flu. Elena took third

ver 5000 walkers and runners of all ages and ability are expected to line-up in Darling Street for the fourth Jive Slave Route Challenge on Sunday 11 May. The annual race features a half marathon, 10km run 10km walk and 5km fun run, which follows routes designed to highlight Cape Town’s natural beauty and rich history. People’s Post is the print media sponsor. All of the distances take participants past some of the city’s most important historic landmarks, many of which are related to slavery. Achmat Jacobs, deputy president of hosts Lion of Africa Itheko Sport Athletic Club, says the race was founded after the club saw a need such an event. “We wanted to start a race that is different from any other races – that is how this concept (was born),” he

says. “Itheko is the fastest growing club in the Cape and South Africa. The club has over 1000 members, with over 200 children in the kids’ athletic development programme. We are the biggest running club in the province, with the second most race entries to the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.” The race will pass the Iziko Slave Lodge, the Slave Tree Plaque and the Whipping Post and directly through the Castle of Good Hope. Several historic churches and mosques are also dotted along the route. The half marathon will start at 07:00, with the 10km race at 07:15, 5km fun run at 08:00 and the 10km walk at 08:30. Instead of a normal starting pistol, runners in all four events will be sent off by a miniature cannon fired from

the castle. All finishers will receive medals and all entrants will receive a coupon to visit the castle next month. Entertainment will start on the Grand Parade at 09:00 and lucky prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Entries for the race can be submitted at all Sportsman’s Warehouse branches until Sunday 27 April. Online entries can be completed at www.topevents.co.za before Sunday 4 May. Race numbers need to be collected from 16:00 until 20:00 on Friday 9 May and from 10:00 until 17:00 on Saturday 10 May. Late entries can also be completed on these days, and on race day from 05:30 till 08:15. V For more information on the race or the club visit www.itheko.org.

place in a time of 03:43:59 and Olesya only managed a sixthplace finish. In the half marathon race, athletes battled windy conditions from start to finish. Defending champion Stephen Mokoka won the men’s race in 01:04:16, almost a minute slower than his time last year. Joel Mmone placed second and Sibabalwe Mzazi was third. The women’s race belonged to Lebo Phalula who comfortably ran to victory in a time of 01:14:00. Rene Kalmer came second in 01:14:23, with Gezashigh Gemeda of Ethiopia taking third in 01:15:02. A record number of athletes participated in the race this year. Race director Chet Sainsbury, who finished his 32nd ultra marathon, says the weather conditions resulted in slower average times this year. “Despite the cold start, things quickly heated up, which made for a slower overall ultra marathon and resulted in a record number of athletes completing the ultra in between six and seven hours,” he says. The wind also contributed to a slower half marathon. Title Sponsor Old Mutual offered a R1-million prize to the male and female runners who break the Ultra Marathon records, but Thompson Magawana and Frith van der Merwe’s records remained in place for another year.

hess is flourishing on the Cape Flats thanks to support from the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). Two local chess clubs are currently part of the DCAS Club Development Programme which assists sports clubs with funding and equipment. The clubs are based in based in Mitchell’s Plain and Athlone. Mitchell’s Plain Chess Club chairperson Reggie Sinden says the support allows them to transport its 41 juniors members. “We have a lot of kids we have to transport to Rocklands every Saturday – they don’t always have their own transport,” he says. “Some members try to transport the kids, but the programme comes in very handy.” Last Wednesday both clubs were present at the sports funding ceremony at Athlone Stadium, where over R2-million was handed over to 47 provincial sports federations. The two chess clubs and a kickboxing club also received equipment to assist with development. Each club received four chess clocks, 20 chess sets, two chess pads, a tog bag and three demonstration boards. Athlone Chess Club chairperson Andre van Reenen says the equipment will realign their development focus, after most of the club’s equipment was stolen two years ago.

“We have been promoting chess at Bonteheuwel, Athlone and Gatesville libraries,” he says. “There are six libraries in the vicinity, so we are working on getting a library chess organisation going to we promote the sport.” Van Reenen, who is also honorary president of Western Province Chess and Chess South Africa, says the club currently does not have a meeting and practice place, but members participate in tournaments. “I need assistance, but no one is willing to assist – it’s very difficult,” Van Reenen says. There are currently 415 sports clubs on the DCAS Development Programme. Provincial cultural affairs and sport minister Dr Ivan Meyer says chess is has been a focus of his administration. “Since Gary Kasparov (chess grandmaster and former World Champion) visited two years ago, chess has grown dramatically in the (province),” he says. “That revolution is still intact and I want to thank the WP Chess Federation (for) working so hard.” The R2m handed over to the federations will be used for three different purposes: R1.4m will go towards development; R585 000 will be used for 43 major events; and R225 000 will be used for five sport tourism events. Head coach Anton Moolman believes the experience gained from the tournament is a victory. “The Community Cup has seen us play more games than we usually would (during this period) and at a higher level than friendlies, but it’s great to be involved in highly competitive rugby because that’s how players grow,” he says. “Luckily we didn’t pick up too many injuries. The lessons we learned in the group stages and knockout rounds will stand us in good stead in the league this year.” Moolman’s charges looked like title contenders throughout the Community Cup, racking up comfortable victories in all their games until the semi-final. Hammies kicked off their inaugural Community Cup campaign with a hefty 48-9 win at home over Sishen (Griquas) on Saturday 15 March. South Africa’s oldest rugby club secured an equally impressive win in their next fixture, winning 41-12 against

Wesbank (Boland) in Malmesbury on Saturday 22 March. The most impressive victory came against Shumba Ferros (Pumas) on Saturday 29 March, with 10 tries and eight conversions scored and two tries and a conversion conceded for a 66-12 final score. Hamiltons finished the group stages unbeaten with a 43-28 win over eventual champions Rustenberg Impala (Leopards) in Rustenberg on Saturday 5 April. Their impressive form continued in the knockout rounds, with a 40-10 win over Centurion RFC (Blue Bulls) securing a spot in the semi-finals. However, they could not repeat the performance and lost 20-18 to Roodepoort (Lions) on Saturday. “We weren’t at our best and the conditions didn’t really play into our hands,” Moolman says. “There was a lot of dew on the field and we like to play it wide, so we ended up making a few handling errors while Roodepoort kept it close to their pack. We also had ab opportunity to win it right at the end, but we missed it. Roodepoort played the conditions better and they were deserved winners on the night.” They eventually finished as runners-up after losing 13-11 to Rustenberg Impala in the final. Hammies beat defending champions College Rovers (KwaZulu-Natal) 27-18 in the third/fourth place play-off.

game as favourites, but Ajax were better in the opening exchanges. Both sides struggle to retain possession but Sundowns were completely incapable of transition from defence into attack. Ajax kept the Pretoria side pinned back with a high defensive line and constant pressing from the midfield and forwards. The high pressure game eventually paid off when Olwethu Nguye stole possession just outside the box and played Charlton Basson into space on the left flank. The forward made no mistake, sending a scorcher into the top corner, beyond the reach of Sundowns goalkeeper Mpho Mathekhga. Ajax were content to play on the break for the rest of the half, breaking up Sundowns’ attacks and launching counter-attacks out wide. The game opened slightly in the secondhalf and Sundowns did a better job of finding their attackers. However, the Urban Warriors’ defence held firm and kept ’Downs scoreless. Ajax skipper Yagan Sasman put in a composed performance to lead his side to victory. The skipper constantly tested throughout the game, but seldom erred. “We are overwhelmed to win it,” he said. “Although we were confident, we didn’t expect to win. “Everybody worked hard for each other and it worked out great for us.” Senoane Gunners beat Harmony Academy 1-0 in the plate final, while Glendene United overcame Bidvest Wits by the same score-line to win the mid-section final.

jax Cape Town claimed their second consecutive Metropolitan Premier Cup title after beating Mamelodi Sundowns in the final on Monday. The young Urban Warriors scored early in the second-half and held out until the final whistle to win 1-0 and claim their sixth title. Victorious coach Maaher Davids says his side were out toprove a point. “This is a great achievement for the club and it shows that we have the best academy in the country – possibly even in Africa,” he says. “We weren’t the favourites, but we proved everybody wrong.” Ajax went to into the final unbeaten, but had a less than impressive start to the tournament. They kicked off with a 2-0 win against School of Excellence, but were held to a goalless draw by Claremont’s ASD Academy and a 1-1 stalemate against Beaufort West City, scraping through to the play-offs from Group B behind ASD. But the defending champions’ fortunes improved in the last 16, as they beat Supersport United 1-0 to advance to quarter-finals and a clash with local rivals Santos. Ajax snuck past The People’s Team 4-3 on penalties, after regular time finished with the scores level at 1-1. In the semi-finals, Ajax edged ASD 1-0 while Sundowns beat Hellenic 1-0.
