BLESSED: This Eid was a made a memorable occasion for many of Hanover Park’s poor when, thanks to various sponsors, Community Workers for the People were able to distribute over 150 food parcels to those in need. On Tuesday last week, the volunteers, helped by scholars from Good Hope Semi nary High, spent hours cramming everything from porridge to sweets into the hampers, which were dis tributed for the holy day on Wednesday. The organisation would like to thank Abdullah Con rad, Imam Gasant Moos, Faldi Ab rahams, Ismail and Rukeya Daniels (all from Lansdowne), Riaad and Manie Jacobs (Plumstead), Amina Domingo (Garlandale), Fouzie Buffkins (Walmer Estate) and Fa rouk Abrahams (Zeekoeivlei). A special thankyou was also extend ed to Islamia College in Lansdowne, which treated 50 lo cals to a boeka feast at its premis es on Eid. Photo: Gigi Richards

Elderly man stabbed in Lansdowne home TAMMY PETERSEN

A

KIND deed by an elderly man, who apparently offered bread to a vagrant, ended in attempted murder when the 83-year-old was viciously stabbed 17 times in his Lansdowne home. The man was found in his Civic Road house on Friday morning by a security guard, who phoned for an ambulance when he saw the pool of blood. The security company thought something was amiss when the signal to the house was lost, and upon arrival, the officer saw that the cord leading to the alarm had been cut. Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesperson for the Lansdowne police, says officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call from the security officer.

When the police arrived at the house, they found the gift of bread lying in a pool of blood on the dining room floor. “The victim was taken to Claremont Hospital for treatment,” Lakey says. “He sustained seven stab wounds to his chest, two on his right ear and a cut on his right hand. The man also sustained about seven stab wounds to his chest and abdomen, and one of the blows punctured his lung. He is in a serious but stable condition.” It has not yet been confirmed whether anything is missing from the house, and the motive behind the attack is still unknown. Lakey says the elder’s family told police that the man always gave food to the homeless who knocked at his door, despite relatives warning him not to be too trusting. “It appears that the man knew his attacker, as he had opened the house’s security gate,” he adds.

Residents have condemned the attack, saying that even those who do good are no longer safe. “It is absolutely disgusting and disgraceful that such an old man was stabbed like this,” local Kurt Isaacs says. “My parents became paranoid overnight after they heard about it. This is a decent area with respectable people who have never been unkind to the hundreds of vagrants who come knocking every day of the week. To turn around and do something like this to a helpful old man is shocking. Absolutely shocking.” Janap Rhode says there has not been a violent attack like this in the quiet section of the area in years. “I have always felt safe and secure in my home, but after something like this happened right on my doorstep, I realise what an evil world we live in. We are mostly older people

who live here. Are we now sitting ducks, waiting to be attacked by some random violent madman?” Lakey advises residents, especially the elderly, to practice extreme caution when approached by people they don’t know. “There are criminals who prey on older people because they are not as strong and able to fight off someone with bad intentions,” he says. People’s Post was unable to reach the resident’s family at our time of going to print. Anyone able to shed light on the incident is urged to phone Warrant Officer Herman Meissenheimer on (021) 700-9000.

Your country is your success THE pursuit of patriotism as part of the Proudly South African campaign’s key mandate to create jobs in South Africa is a factor itself for attracting competent and passionate talent. “We pride ourselves in having some of the biggest and best recruitment companies registered as Proudly SA members,” says Vusi Sithole, executive manager for human resources and administration for the Proudly SA campaign. “This makes it easier to attract and recruit the right candidates from the market. Our market-related salaries, with additional value propositions to the right candidate, support our recruitment strategy.” Sithole says Proudly SA invests deliberately in its staff as they are seen as partners in the organisation’s work. “We insist that our personnel are patriotic about South Africa; they must have an internal drive and passion to serve our company and, subsequently, our country. “We look for people who take initiative, and who strive for excellence.

We value excellent communicators and diligent team players who have potential to grow within our organisation.” He says the most important attributes preceding formal qualifications include a productivity-driven approach, a hard-working attitude, good people skills and above-average computer competency. Relevant post-matric qualifications and experience are required for most positions. “Take the time to thoroughly research the industry in which you pursue a career placement,” Sithole advises. “Do the same with specific companies in that industry; explore the entrance opportunities they have, including their internship openings. “Package your CV so that it clearly outlines your skills, abilities, attributes, growth potential, aptitude and personal strengths. It is equally important to sell this package together with your personality traits and other achievements. “Proofread your CV thoroughly before sending it out anywhere, and always include at least three con-

tactable references and your correct contact details. Remember that HR departments get bombarded with loads of CVs. It is therefore important to send a neat, legible and selfexplanatory CV to attract their attention – nothing too fancy or cluttered.” Candidates, Sithole continues, need to research the company’s vision and key objectives, and take the time to get a sense of its organisational culture before they can sell themselves. For a candidate even to be considered for the next round of interviews, they should be passionate and patriotic about the Proudly SA campaign’s mission. Sithole says Proudly South African has “not really been affected by the skills crisis”. “The Proudly South African internship programme has always given us a competitive edge to respond to immediate personnel losses as a stop gap measure. Ninety percent of our all our former interns have either been fully appointed internally or elsewhere, again showcasing our contribution and commitment to create jobs in South Africa.”

Daylight robbery in Kenwyn TAMMY PETERSEN

Work resumes at Howick Court TAMMY PETERSEN

W

ORKERS contracted to carry out Hanover Park’s multimillion rand council flat upgrade returned to work yesterday (Monday) after five weeks of inactivity. While locals are ecstatic that the upgrade is back on the go, the City has warned that there could be further site closures “if the situation demands”. This comes after a recent gang war ravaged the area and caused council to stop work owing to the high risk involved – especially seeing that some workers had been threatened by gangsters. Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements, says several meetings have taken place between contractors, project management, the local police, the community policing forum and Metro Police, and increased monitoring and patrols were assured by the authorities. “Although the frequency of incidents reported could not be established as having notably decreased, the contractors agreed to reopen the site on Monday due to pressure from the community and local workers,” he says. “As there is no way of predicting when or where these incidents could flare up, or the risk workers could be subjected to, the contractors have indicated that there could be further site closures if the situation demands.” Yesterday (Monday), when People’s Post visited Howick Court, workers were hard at work, joking and excited to be earning a wage again. One worker told the reporter that her time at home had been “very difficult on the pocket”, after workers were informed on the morning of 1 August that work would cease at 10:00 that day. “We were at home and without pay for over a month. Most of us were dependent on the money for a regular income, and without it, life was tough. I just hope that, in future, the

contractor lets us know in advance so we can make alternative financial arrangements.” She adds that everyone is “glad to be back” on site. Resident Nellie Abrahams (63) says she is happy to see work has resumed. “I have been living in the containers for two months, and I am sick of this place. We were told that we will be moving into our homes next week, and I am so excited. What was only supposed to be only six weeks here in Container City turned into almost three months, and I can’t wait to move back into my flat.” She says she, her daughter and eight grandchildren have had enough of living out of boxes. “I am so grateful that I won’t be here for much longer. This place is cold and not pleasant to live in at all.” Meanwhile, Sonnenberg says the period of inactivity will not affect the overall project’s final completion date of June 2015. “The contract makes provision for extra time. However, as there are three contracts planned for the 1 680 units being refurbished in Hanover Park, work could happen concurrently.”

The 26-year-old suffered severe bruising and extensive damage to his eye and back after the alleged syndicate “mistook him for a rich businessman” last Tuesday. The man, who asks not to be named, says he had spent that morning going from bank to bank in an attempt to have his faulty ATM card replaced. “I drove from Kenilworth to Plumstead, but all the banks were full. I had a bag with me, so I guess these guys thought I was a rich guy who was withdrawing large sums of money,” he explains. “It probably made things worse that I was driving my father’s Mercedes Benz.” He pulled up in front of his family’s Brockhurst Road home at about 12:45 when he saw six well-dressed and impeccably groomed men approach him. “They were carrying guns, and I thought they were trying to hijack me. I immediately threw the car keys into the front yard. I then realised that they weren’t after the Mercedes, because they started to demand that I hand over ‘the money’,” he says. When he explained to them that he had no cash on him, the men started assaulting him, beating his face and body as he lay in the driveway. “If anyone witnessed it, I’m sure they thought I was being arrested. These guys were really laying into me, so, in a bid to get them to stop, I told them I would tell them where the money was.” He told one of the men that the cash

was in his wallet, but when they took it from his pocket, all they found was R20. “They then started attacking me again until a car drove down the road. They stopped the vehicle and, since they weren’t paying attention to me, I ran and hid at a nearby church,” he says. The car they stopped belonged to a 29year-old man from Gleemor, who was forced out of his car by the armed men. Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesperson for the Lansdowne police, says that when the man stepped out of his Toyota Corolla, the criminals, pointing their guns at him, robbed him of his cellphone, got into his car and drove off. “The black Opel Corsa the men had arrived in then followed suit with four of the robbers inside. The man then stopped a stranger and instructed him to follow his car. “The robbers had driven into a cul-desac, but jumped from the stolen vehicle into their own car before fleeing the scene. The man found his car, but his radio and wallet had been stolen.” No arrests have yet been made. Lakey advises people to be alert when driving home. “Make sure you aren’t being followed. If you feel you might be in danger, go to the police station and report it. It seems that businesspeople are being targeted, so make sure you take every necessary precaution not to fall victim to these criminals.” Anyone with information about this crime is urged to phone the station on (021) 700-9000.

Screws tighten on Lansdowne robber TAMMY PETERSEN

QUICK thinking by a Lansdowne resident who noticed a man lurking outside her property led to the arrest of a screwdriver-wielding robber after he forced his way into her Rouxton Road home last Tuesday morning. The 44-year-old housewife had seen movement through the front window, and grew suspicious when she saw a man lurking in the street. Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesperson for the Lansdowne police, says the woman phoned the station to report the matter. “However, a few minutes later she heard a bang and saw that the man had entered the

house through the back door, which had been open,” Lakey says. “He threatened the woman with a screwdriver and grabbed her cellphone before fleeing the scene on foot.” But the robber had barely escaped the property when he was cornered in the road by officers responding to the woman’s call. A 44-year-old man from Flamingo Crescent has been arrested, and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on a charge of house robbery on Wednesday. The woman’s cellphone was returned to her. Lakey advises anyone who notices suspicious activity to phone the station so that the nearest sector patrol vehicle can be dispatched.

The park encompasses an incredible 7750 hectares of rich and varied flora and fauna, including SA's indigenous fynbos; however, the natural beauty of Cape Point is not its sole attraction. Cape Point is also an historic maritime icon. Aptly named the 'Cape of Storms' by Bartolomeu Dias, the Portuguese explorer, the many shipwrecks that litter the coastline are testimony to the treacherous seas around Cape Point. The first lighthouse was completed in 1859 and still stands at 249 metres above sea-level. Although a newer lighthouse at 87 metres above sea-level is now in use, visitors can still access the historic lighthouse with an exhilarating ride on the Flying Dutchman funicular. The only funicular of its kind on the African continent offers breathtaking views as it travels to the summit of Cape Point. The

Flying Dutchman Funicular is not just for tourists! It is incredible fun for kids, affordable for students and pensioners and saves everybody a walk up a very steep slope! The game and rules of rugby 101 LYNN PRINS

WITH just four days to go before the Rugby World Cup 2011 kickoff, the excitement left over from the championship four years ago still lingers among Springbok supporters. Springbok and other teams’ paraphernalia adorn the windows of stores, while everywhere you go you hear people talking about P Divvy, John Smit and Victor Matfield. That said, many people who have never before showed an interest in rugby will now camp out in front of the television – even though many won’t know the rules and laws of the game. Scrums, penalty tries and offside lines will become heavily debated concepts.

Yes, for the next seven weeks, even housewives will be tuning in to watch 30 grown men running after an egg-shaped ball with the hope that Ard Matthews won’t butcher the national anthem, and despite the fact that they’ll be missing out on their morning soapies – all the matches will be played in the morning. People’s Post has decided to introduce the game to the many who, though they don’t know their way around the rules, are committed to supporting the Bokke in New Zealand. Hopefully these tips will assist you in becoming a rugby fundi – the next Hugh Bladen, perhaps – and assist you in joining the arcane conversations that will surround the tournament.

Rugby for dummies •Each team consists of 22 men, of whom 15 will be on the field most of the time.

•The teams are divided into backs and forwards, with the backs likely to be the lighter in weight. In rugby, numbers 1 and 3 are the prop forwards; number 2 is the hooker; 4 and 5 are the locks; 6 and 7 are the flankers; 8 is the so-called “eighth man”; 9 is the scrumhalf; 10 is the flyhalf; 11 and 14 are your wings; 12 and 13 are your centres; and 15 is the fullback. •The forwards – from 1 to 8 – are known as the pack, as they do the hard work in the scrums and lineouts •A scrum happens when the eight forwards go head to head with the eight forwards of the other team. This is where you will often hear the referee say “crouch, touch, pause, engage”. The scrumhalf (9) – the link between the backline and

forwards – puts the ball at the feet of both teams in the hope that his team wins the ball. •A line-out involves the forwards, with the tallest players, often the lock forwards (4 or 5), trying to capture the ball from the air. The ball is thrown in by the hooker (2), while the jumper is supported by other players, usually the props. Next week, People’s Post will give readers an introduction to rucks and mauls. Don’t forget to watch the world cup opening ceremony and match between New Zealand and Tonga at 10:00. The Boks take on Wales in their opening clash in Wellington on Sunday at 10:30 – don’t forget to wear your green and gold and show your support for the boys!

Charities to benefit from cycle tour ENTRIES for the 35th annual Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour officially opened on Thursday 1 September. The iconic event – the largest timed cycling event in the world – will take place on Sunday 11 March 2012.

David Bellairs, CEO of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, announced a key departure for the 2012 event: limiting of individual online entries to 30 000, and opening the rest to charities. “Having seen the success achieved by large international sporting events, like the London and New York Marathons, which allow charities to use their events for fundraising, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust decided this year to encourage registered charities and social investment projects to enter by purchasing premium rate chari-

ty bonds for participation.” Explaining how the charity bonds will work, Bellairs said a limited number of 5 000 entries will be made available to charities and corporates in bonds, with one bond containing 10 entries. These will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis to charities and corporates applying to the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. “The great benefit to charities that purchase bonds is that they will be permitted to ‘late enter’ the names of their bond participants up until 13 January 2012 – which is only eight weeks prior to the event,” Bellairs said. Online entries can be submitted at the Cycle Tour website at www.cycletour.co.za. You’ll need your ID or passport, a valid credit card, your medical aid details and membership number, and an emergency contact number.

A new home for cricket excellence LYNN PRINS

NATIONAL coach and cricket icon Gary Kirsten launched his cricket academy at Claremont Cricket Club at the beginning of the month in conjunction with Gio Collusi of Rondebosch’s Cricket Academy. Kirsten, who retired from international cricket in 2004, made his test debut in 1993 against Australia in Melbourne. He furthered his career as a coach when he was offered a contract to develop the Indian team and led them to the the top in the 2011 world cup. In June this year, he was appointed head coach for the South African national team alongside former South African teammate Allan Donald. Five years ago, Kirsten approached Claremont Cricket Club with a vision to develop an internationally recognised cricket academy. “I asked the club to go into part-

nership, as I wanted to produce something that could develop into quality, and I felt it would add value to the city.” Says Collusi, “September was the time to start, and despite the fact that we’ve had financial battles, we’ve still managed to launch the academy on time.” Kirsten and Collusi, with the help of sponsors, spent R7 million on getting the facilities for the new Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy up to scratch, and will be looking to install indoor nets soon – for the moment, the Western Province Cricket Club is the only local club kitted out with the luxury of indoor facililties. The Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy offers professional coaching for individual cricketers, teams and coaches of various ages and experience levels. For more information, visit www.garykirsten.com or contact Gio Colussi on 083 759 0376. Alternatively, email info@garykirsten.com.
