Secondhand – or stolen? TAMMY PETERSEN

T

HEY sell everything from cellphone chargers to coffee machines, and besides a few scratches, the appliances are in good shape. However, the homeless people trading near Lansdowne station have recently come under fire for allegedly selling stolen goods. It is understood that two main entrepreneurs have been trading in cheap secondhand goods for the past two years, but have raised eyebrows since they started selling expensive items such as HI-FIs and cellphones. When People’s Post recently spoke to one of the traders, he insisted that all his stock is brought by vagrants and trolley-pushers who find these possessions in dirt bins. “They scurrel around here and bring stuff which they think can be sold,” the man, who asks not to be named, claims. “All I do is buy it from them. I used to collect such things from bins myself, so I know how it is. If I am selling stolen goods, why haven’t I been arrested?” He continues that he makes a fair amount of money, and that he indeed sells expensive goods such as laptops and computer gadgets. “I don’t have to ask where they got it. I just pay them and that’s that. This stuff is in demand – I have customers every day.” But while the “entrepreneurs” claim that they are doing nothing illegal, residents tell a different story. “Where in the world have you heard of a laptop being sold for R100?” asks Lansdowne resident Benjamin du Preez. “The only time you will sell something for next to nothing is to get rid of it easily. There is no way that something obtained ethically will be sold for a portion of what it’s worth.” Another local claims that she has proof that the traders are “up to no good”. “I once found my potplant which disappeared from my garden, being sold for R20,” Shameemah Lewis says. “Most people know that everything is not above board when it comes to buying from them, but yet many of them do.

Does anyone ever think about where these vagrants get the money to buy their ‘stock’?” she asks. Firdous Goliath says despite the “clearly suspicious” nature of the market, it’s locals who are causing it to thrive. “If there weren’t clients, there wouldn’t be a market. Everyone who lives here has so much to say about the problems these vagrants bring into our area, yet they are supporting this unethical business! How does that make you any better than them?” she fumes. “People like me who live close to this nonsense see how people swarm around these expensive things which probably belong to people who worked really hard for it. A raid by the police is long overdue, if you ask me.” Hanif Loonat, the chairperson for the provincial community police board, says legally, these “traders” can be arrested for being in possession of possible stolen goods. “They are essentially dealing in second-hand items and there is a stringent process which has to be followed to ensure that dealers are not selling items which have been illegally obtained. Therefore, people who buy these goods are also in contravention of the law, as the items are then technically in their possession. They can then be faced with the same charges as the seller.” Captain Allan Manuel, the operations manager at Lansdowne police, says regular operations are done at the market with law enforcement, but usually only broken and cheap second-hand items are found. “The items are usually confiscated as they cannot prove it belongs to them. However, they are not issued with fines as they do not have fixed addresses or money to pay the penalties,” he explains. Sector patrol officers regularly check in and take note of what is on sale, and which items could be stolen property, he adds. “But we were not aware that they were selling expensive electrical goods, as these would naturally not be on display. We will be keeping a closer eye on them, and with the help of law enforcement, do more regular operations at the site.”

Word on the street

SUMMER JACOBS

BRETT Heron, the chairperson of the City of Cape Town’s Naming Committee, will have some weighty decisions to make as meetings to decide the fate of the names of 27 streets take place to obtain public sentiment about the plan. People’s Post took to the streets to find out whether Cape Town was anxious about disposing of names embedded within society, such as Jan Smuts Drive and Lansdowne Road, or if they embraced it as a case of “out with the old, in with the new.”

WASTE OF TIME: “I personally think it’s all a waste of money. I don’t really care about street names but if they had to rename streets it should be after some of the freedom fighters that fought to free our country,” said Luvuyo Bhadashe from Lansdowne.

TWO SIDES: “On the one hand, changing the names of streets can be a good thing in cases where the memories of apartheid are still prominent. On the other, these renaming pro posals and the actual renaming are too labour intensive,” said Aqeel Ibrahim from Wetton.

INFRASTRUCTURE FIRST: “The City wants to make a big deal about changing street names when they can’t even afford to fix some of the very same streets that are full of potholes,” said an unimpressed William Karlstrom from Wetton.

Peaceful protest turns dirty About 1 000 people protested along Weltevreden Road and Vanguard Drive, all the way through to Duinefontein and Lansdowne roads, at about 06:00 to vent their issues with the service delivery in the community. Members of the community were “fed up” with the issues pertaining to electricity, water and the amount of dirt that has been piling up in the area. The protest became unruly when protesters started performing acts of destruction. People threw stones at motorists, rubble collected off the sides of the roads was strewn

Loan sharks targeting seniors MELISSA LE ROUX

LOAN SHARKS in the greater Athlone area are allegedly preying on senior citizens collecting their monthly pension. Several people apparently wait outside the pension offices to offer senior citizens “musthave” deals, says Manenberg police spokesperson, Lieutenant Ian Bennett. “These loan sharks are preying on the pensioners who come to collect their money. The guys make empty promises and offer them things, and then wait close by for the senior citizens to draw the money,” he says. Proportional representative councillor Magadien Davids says that during the course of the month, pensioners run low on funds and then borrow money from these loan sharks.

“This has become a regular trend in the community. These guys know just how to play it and they charge the seniors huge interest too,” he says. If at any point the senior citizen is unable to pay back the loan, the loan shark allegedly withholds the pensioner’s All Pay card – which is used to draw their pension. According to Bennett, keeping somebody’s All Pay card is against the law and can lead to “serious charges”. “These loan sharks are not allowed to refuse to give back the pensioner’s card. It belongs to them and can only be used by them. This sort of action can have heavy repercussions,” he says. Local SAPS will be keeping a close eye on activities at the various pensioners’ pay points.

CHAOS broke out yesterday when what started out as a peaceful service delivery protest turned ugly.

across the roads, and two cars were set alight. SAPS were on the scene to monitor the situation. The protest ended at about 11:00, and members of Traffic Services, Metro Police and the City of Cape Town, began a clean-up of the rubble-infested area. The spokesperson for Manenberg police, Lieutenant Ian Bennett, says that the protest caused “heavy” traffic from all sides. “People ended up being three to four hours late for work because of the strike. Police blocked off the cars as protesters were stoning vehicles riding past,” he says. “People who attended the protest probably gave the City an ultimatum and after not seeing any improvement, resorted to this sort of behaviour,” adds Bennett. Nobody reported any injuries and no arrests were made.

Improving Manenberg IN a bid to better services and build stronger relationships with the community, Manenberg police station commander Brigadier Andre van Dyk continuously meets with residents. The meetings take place once a month and residents have a chance to raise their concerns. “It is important to hear what the community’s needs are and what our shortcomings are,” he says. “If any resident feels that they were not treated with dignity and respect, they should try and contact me as soon as possible so that the problem can be addressed.” He also gave a stern warning that police officers will not hesitate to take action against community members who are involved with illegal gang activity and drug distribution. “Action will also be taken against anyone abusing and misusing children. Parents whose children experience drug addiction need to come forward and seek the advice of trained counsellors and drug support groups. “This community is strong and vibrant and I’m highly optimistic that together we

Last Wednesday, concerned community members gathered around a drain, where the intestines were splayed across. The residents believed that the guts belonged to a person, as a pair of dentures were found among them. Gigi Richards, a local resident, says the guts were found with gold teeth. “As I was coming from the police station, I noticed people gathering around. When I went to see what all the fuss was about, I saw

the fresh intestines by the drain. Everybody thought it was from a body because there was gold teeth with it. “When the police saw us taking pictures, they came to shout at us,” she says. The spokesperson for Phillipi Police Station, Lieutenant Lance Goliath, says that the intestines belonged to a dog. He confirms that a pair of dentures were also found.

Too late

A COMMUNITY has been robbed of the joyful presence of one of their own, a little girl who went missing a week ago. Now fears abound that an unidentified body found on the beach may be that of eightyear-old Savannah Mersin from Lavender Hill. Savannah’s foster family last saw her on Monday 27 February. Subsequently, police have detained a man and a woman in connection with her disappearance. Meanwhile, in another suburb, the parents of five-year-old Alvino Van Der Bergh are grieving after their toddler’s lifeless body was found in a dam. Alvino went missing on Monday 20 February, a week before Savannah disappeared. That makes it two known cases of missing children in the space of one week – two too many. Whether missing, attacked or dead, the fact that an defenceless child has been made vulnerable in the first place, is alarming. Where are the adults, the community responsible for keeping our children safe? Parents are bombarded by news reports of missing or dead children. How much more warning is needed, when statistics show that “a child going missing every six hours in South Africa”? The fact that the majority of missing children are found is no consolation. Children should not be left alone or exposed to potential harm, to begin with. The Western Cape has a high incidence of missing children cases, coupled with socioeconomic ills such as gangsterism and drug abuse. Knowing this, it is unthinkable that some parents or guardians leave their children to play in the streets, visit friends or walk to school and shops, unsupervised. Where is the care, love and security that is the right of every child? Should the wake-up call of yet another child going missing be what galvanises apathetic adults? How many more precious lives must be lost?

Your SMSes Help stamp out prostitution FOR this past week, the community of Lansdowne between Roy Road and Wetton Circle have been sacrificing an hour or two of their valuable time, taking to the streets to keep the prostitutes out, and its been working. Due to the apparent activity on Lansdowne Road, they are now more active on Wetton Road. I am thus urging the community to come out and take back their streets and deter these ladies of ill-repute from plying their

trade on our doorsteps. I have been disappointed in the lack of support from our local councillor. Before elections all candidates promised to address the issue of prostitution if they were elected to office – where are they now? Once again I am urging the community to make a stand, or else it might just escalate out of control. Volunteer, as I have done, and join the neighbourhood watch. PATRICK ABRAHAMS Lansdowne

Don’t be so harsh on local ‘ladies’ I HAVE a different view point. I would rather like to hear of more men that buy sex, than to hear of the increase in rape cases by lustful men.

Don’t be to harsh on the ladies along Wetton Road. MSK Wetton

Department not picture perfect at all I WENT to Hillstar to renew my driver’s licence. After going out of my way to have a set of four photos taken last week, I was told that they (Hillstar Traffic Department) take their own photos. Not today you don’t! I have to live with that photo for the next five years! What about the R50 I wasted on photos? The renewal notice clearly states: ‘Such application must be accompanied by: three re-

cent driving licence photos. Of course, nobody takes responsibility and the guy at the info counter says the renewal notice is an unapproved form! Come on, City of Cape Town – GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER! PAM ROELOFSE Woodlands Park This letter was sent to the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services, who failed to repond at our time of going to print.

Local thoughts . To the woman who conned that poor lady at the Lansdowne ATM, go work for your own money! You will never escape God’s vengeance! Never! The same applies to robbers who use other methods! John . Councillor Faiza Adams was a loyal, hard-working friend who loved to help people. She will be remembered and sadly missed by many. Rabia and all at Phoenix High . How about residents starting to take responsibility for the areas they reside in and stop waiting for Mario Wanza to clean up rubbish dumps when he is trying to sort out housing for people. Lets work together to make Manenberg a better place for all. . This is a fact: irrespective of religion and its laws, there are more illegitimate than legitimate children today. What a shame! Kamalie, Hanover Park What’s in a name . I object to roads being named after people. Look at the cost to change it! Learn from the past. We have other options. . I think the changing of street names are stupid! I will always refer to a street as the name it used to be. It’s a use-

less waste of time and tax payers’ money. Give our pensioners more money so they can enjoy their last says with dignity! Close down the notorious lanes in our areas. Now that will be money well spent. Driver . The history of our land remains true to all of us. The names of towns, suburbs, places and streets are the culture and history of our country. What's the point in changing the names of streets and airports to names we cannot even pronounce, let alone our overseas visitors? Surely in these times this money could be spent wisely. The long and winding road . To all the bikers, young and old: Please do not put your life in danger by speeding, even if you know how to drive your bike. An accident can happen within the blink of an eye. Your life and the lives of others mean a lot. You can’t replace a life which has been lost. Please think before you speed. Speed kills. . Why is it impossible for motorists to stick to the speed limit? When you were tested for your licence you obeyed all the rules. Now you break all the rules. People like you don’t deserve a licence. Michel . I suggest Patricia de Lille

take a ride/walk around the suburbs in poorer areas to observe the condition the roads, pavements and parks are in. We also pay rates and taxes. She could then see first hand if her ward councillors are doing the job that they are getting paid for. We voted for them and haven't seen them paying the neighbourhood a visit. Disgruntled citizen Just a thought . Bread is ridiculously overpriced at local shops. The so-called shopowners from other countries should be warned by consumer councils to sell bread at set prices. Please be fair to the poor man on the street. . I know, let’s all club together and buy Tony Robinson a one-way ticket to the UK. He can spend his autumn years bitching about South Africa with all the other expats. Let’s send him to Eastbourne. He’ll be miserable there. By the way . Do private hospitals know about the baby-friendly health initiative that was implemented by the World Health Organisation? Moms should be encouraged to breastfeed for the first six months. Don’t encourage moms to buy bottles. Concerned mom

Big Walk attracts young and old O

VER 20 000 people braved the cold and mist on Sunday morning and gathered in the shadow of Cape Town Stadium to take part in the thirteenth annual 10 Kilometre Big Walk. The event has grown into a highlight of the Cape Town sporting calendar and has become the sporting event with the third largest number of participants. People’s Post was the print media sponsor of the event. The race started at 07:30, but most of the walkers had already gathered long before and lined up patiently at the starting line in their droves. Both young and old participated, and it was some of the youngest and oldest big walkers who left the starting line first. The wheelchair-bound entrants were the first to depart from the start line, and they were followed by mothers or families pushing their young children in prams. After the first two groups were allowed to leave, the other walkers were addressed by Reverend Philip Bam, of League of Friends of the Blind, and Sheikh Shadullah Khan before they set off. Many non walkers also gathered in the stadium precinct to support their family and friends, and enjoy the fun-filled, friendly atmosphere.

FAMILY AFFAIR: The Big Walk was a family friendly event, and sights like these, of entire families taking part, were common. Photo: Liam Moses

SHADE: The temperature in Green Point started to rise near the end of the walk, and both young and old had to protect themselves from the sun.

HANDS UP: There was a carnivallike atmosphere throughout the event. This group of walkers came into the final stretch singing and dancing.

READY TO RACE: Members of the Imfundo Cycling Club in Lavender Hill gather at Imfundo Cycles for practice.

Tuesday 6 March 2012

MECHANIC: Fagodien Campher works on one of the bikes.

Lavender Hill cyclists tackle Argus LIAM MOSES

I

N the Cape Flats suburb of Lavender Hill, those who can afford bicycles mostly use them as a means of transportation or cycle as a hobby. The siting of at least one person on a bike is almost guaranteed during a visit to the area, but as a sport, cycling seems to be quite uncommon. Despite this general lack of interest in the sport, the area will be well represented at Cape Town’s biggest cycle race this year, thanks to the Imfundo Cycling Club. This small, dedicated group of enthusiastic but inexperienced cyclists have been training for the past three months and will be taking part in the Cape Argus Cy-

cle Tour next Saturday. Aubrey Petersen (41), a Lavender Hill resident and one of the group’s older members, said the club started after a local man set up a bicycle repair shop. “It actually started in 2010 when Fagodien Campher came in as a bicycle mechanic and my youngest daughter came to borrow a bike from him,” said Peterson. “She and her friends borrowed bikes from him and that’s how they started the club, and more and more came.” Campher started the shop that same year in a shipping container, next to Lavender Hill Secondary School, after he was retrenched. According to Peterson, the club has around 35 members, 25 of whom are regulars who attend

practice and socialise with each other as much as possible. Most of the club’s members cannot afford their own bikes and use ones which belong to Campher. Others have purchased bikes from him. The club has had mixed reactions from the community since its formation almost two years ago. According to Petersen, feedback from residents has been positive apart from a few incidents early in the club’s life when gangsters tried to mug some of their members and steal the bikes. It was this type of incident that Campher was referring to when he said that members of the club were not being shown as much respect as they were giving others. “I want other people to respect what we are doing here. They

mustn’t look down upon us. The cars must respect cyclists. We train them to respect the cars, but sometimes they don’t respect us,” said Campher. “Or some of the guys in the community don’t respect us. They see a group of us riding and they will throw stones at us. We always respect them. But it seems like we look funny to them with a helmet and cycling gear on. In our community most people don’t know what cycling is. So we would love to introduce them to cycling. Come ask us questions, we will answer them.” The club is also facing other challenges such as a lack of funding for equipment, race entry fees and other costs. But despite this, the club seems to be growing from strength to strength and more people are set

to join after the Argus Cycle Tour. Peterson believes that the club’s attraction has less to do with cycling, but more with the friendships that its young members develop with each other. “My opinion is that it’s because they feel like they belong somewhere, they have been accepted somewhere,” said Peterson. “With everything going on in our community, some of them don’t feel accepted at home. Their parents just dump them and go, but here they feel like they belong. “Because this isn’t the only place they get together. They get together at my house, they get together at the coach’s house. So wherever they can get together to be with the rest of the club members, they are there. They prefer that than being at home.”
