LANSDOWNE: ASSESSMENT CENTRE ON THE CARDS

Homeless at a crossroads TAMMY PETERSEN

HELP for Lansdowne’s homeless may soon be only a few kilometres away. A building in Gatesville has been earmarked to be converted into an assessment centre to service vagrants living in the greater Athlone area. Subcouncil manager Edgar Carolissen says the council-owned property has been badly vandalised but capital funding is being sought to renovate the facility. Should this be secured, the age-old homelessness dilemma may take a turn in the right direction. “At the centre we will have a database that will help us keep a record of all the vagrants in the area,” Carolissen explains. “We will also assist them by trying to put them into shelters or helping them to get back with their families.” While residents may welcome the news, it remains to be seen whether the vagrants will accept the offer, ward councillor Anthea Green says. “Efforts to move them back home or grant them assistance to get off the street are not always gratefully accepted. Many of the people have made the decision to live in these conditions and there is very little we can do to convince them otherwise,” she insists. However, those who have used the opportunities offered are “doing well”, Green says. “Seven former vagrants are now working for the council, and a number of others have accepted the help offered to relocate back to their original homes.” But those living on the streets insist that this is where they want to stay. Isgak de Bruyn says he is “sick and tired” of council officials and “dikbek” residents trying to force them to move. “Everyone wants to get rid of us but when they need people to do their dirty work then we’re good enough. Sometimes these people pull up in their flashy cars and ask us to clean their gardens and pay us a stink R20 for a whole day,” he fumes. Despite this, de Bruyn says most days he earns an honest living by going from door to door in search of odd jobs. “I have been living here for 12 years and don’t plan on leaving any time soon. As long as I can earn an income, this is where I will stay.” Although winter is her least favourite

EAGER: Josephine Hendricks is one of very few vagrants who would like to get off the streets and start a better life. time of the year, Cinthia Merton would rather spend rainy nights on the street than in a shelter. “There are lots of bad people at the shelter,” she says. “They steal your things or hurt you while you sleep. The people in charge of the place look down on you because you are a nothing in their eyes. Here, we are like a family.” Errol Wiliams nods in agreement, saying he promised himself 20 years ago that he would never sleep at a shelter again. “Those people rob you blind when you close you eyes,” he says. “They treat you like rubbish and chase you out as soon as the sun comes up. I am not a dog and will rather look after myself on the street.” But Josephine Hendricks says she would love the opportunity to sleep under a roof for the first time in 17 years.

“I would grab the opportunity with both hands,” she says tearfully. “Some of us really don’t want to be here but we have no choice. I have a son who is disabled and I would love to see him living more comfortably. I would walk to Athlone to get help if it was offered.” Residents have also welcomed the potential solution to the homelessness scourge. Gadija Ismail regularly hands out sandwiches to the people sleeping near Lansdowne station and believes people should “stop treating them like rubbish”. “These are people who deserve respect, no matter where they live. They should not be victimised for being impoverished,” she says. She fully supports the establishment of an assessment centre, but adds that it would have been more convenient had it been lo-

cated in Lansdowne. “In essence, these people would be expected to walk to get help,” Ismail says. “Gatesville is a good few kilometres away. But those who really want to be assisted will make the effort to go.” Meanwhile, a R100 000 investment is starting to pay off. Through council’s Rent-A-Cop initiative, which kicked in earlier this month, unruly vagrants are kept in check by two dedicated Law Enforcement officers who patrol homelessness hotspots across the suburb to ensure no bylaws are contravened. The duo has managed to halt the once thriving illegal second-hand markets vagrants were operating from street corners, and are making major inroads in the policing of public drunkenness, loitering and begging, Green says.

HISTORY is playing out on the Artscape stage. Mike van Graan’s Brothers in Blood and Rainbow Scars will run until Saturday 11 May. Brothers in Blood, a drama exploring prejudice and xenophobia in a religious setting against the background of the activities of Pagad in the late ‘90s, gives a human face to the dilemmas, anxieties, hopes and fears ordinary people share. The production is directed by Greg Homann and features David Dennis as Abubaker Abrahams, Kurt Egelhof as Reverend Fredericks, Aimee Valentine as Leila Abrahams, Harrison Makubalo as Fadiel Suleiman and David Dukas as Brian Cohen. Rainbow Scars is set in April 1994, when the Rainbow Nation is born. It tells the story of suburban mother Ellen Robinson, played by Terry Norton, who adopts an orphan called Lindiwe, portrayed by Kertice Maitisa. It moves on to 2012, when the motherdaughter relationship is challenged with scars of a country still struggling to heal

MANENBERG: CLEAN-UP GAINS MOMENTUM

‘Council drug houses’ targeted

AFTER 25 YEARS of raids and police operations, a known Manenberg drug dealing duo has been given their marching orders. The Western Cape High Court granted an eviction order which will see the occupants out of the council home by the end of June. According to police records, both the mother and her 47-year-old son have previous drug convictions. The flat, situated in Sonderend Road, has been bathed in blue lights on umpteen occasions over the past two decades, Manenberg police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett explains. “This victory proves that your crimes will eventually catch up with you,” he says. “We sincerely hope that others involved in similar activities realise that the wheels of justice do turn and any criminal activity which you think is going unnoticed will eventually result in justice.” Bennett hopes those claiming to sell illegal substances to put food on the table realise that no court will consider leniency when faced with this “poor excuse”. When People’s Post visited the house last week, people sitting outside the property claimed the homeowners were out. Mayor Patricia de Lille says the eviction order was sought as the occupants were violating their lease agreement through drug peddling, making alterations to the property without permission and defaulting on rent payments. “The occupants were given two months to vacate the property, which will now be allocated to qualifying residents in line with the City’s allocation policy,” she confirms. But the fight against “council drug houses” is far from over, community worker Rag-

iema Jonkers says. “There is at least one merchant in every street in Manenberg,” she says. “You can easily spot their properties; just look for the high gates and skollies keeping guard in the front. The dealers hide behind the very people whose lives they have destroyed with their poison.” Fear is not the only reason why no one talks about the thriving drug trade taking place right under their noses, Jonkers insists. “These cowards are smart. Most of the people here are dirt poor and desperate for cash. These law-abiding citizens, from kerkbroers to the elderly, get paid to cover up the dealers’ dirty business. Solank hulle kan bloedgeld kry is hulle alright.” Manenberg resident Irene Miller says while the eviction is a step in the right direction, there are still too many tenants selfishly plying their trade and raking in the bucks while living in homes meant for the poor. “I was on the waiting list for 23 years before I moved into my flat,” she says. “During the years I lived in someone’s backyard, I saw how people used the council units as lekkerhuisies, dagga houses and shebeens. The sad thing is that most of them are still living there comfortably while desperate people still wait for a home.” She says she regularly reports suspicious activity to the police but not enough residents are following suit. “People know when their neighbours are doing wrong but they choose not to get involved. It’s time to take a stand for what is right. Don’t let more children grow up in hokkies while the bad guys sleep comfortably.” De Lille says 350 council homes being used for illegal activities have already been identified. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Every effort is being made to transform the once infamous council flats in Manenberg into safer family environments for its tenants, police say.PHOTO: PHOTO24 units across the Cape Flats are being conducted by Law Enforcement as well as members of the City of Cape Town’s Housing Safety Unit. “We will not tolerate our units being used as a base for criminal and illegal activities,” de Lille says. “We are currently in the process of filing 36 eviction orders against occupants allegedly conducting unlawful activities in council properties throughout the city.” She further encourages residents to report any suspicious deeds to the nearest housing office or the relevant council authorities, who are heavily dependent on tipoffs. “We will pursue every possible legal avenue to ensure that those who conduct criminal activities in these properties make way for law-abiding citizens.”

EDUCATION: CAMPAIGN GOES ONLINE

Safe sex message just a click away

TARREN-LEE HABELGAARN

CAN I get pregnant after the first time I have sex? How do I use a condom? Why can’t I use the withdrawal method? How do I know when I’m ready to have sex? These are some of the questions frequently asked by teenagers throughout the generations, but now the answers may come at the click of a mouse. Social media is being used to get the message of safe sex across to youth through Connect-Ed, a campaign targeting high schoolers. Connect-Ed aims to reduce the transmission of HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unplanned pregnancies among youth in South Africa. Sarika Modi, the manager of Connect-Ed, says: “The last survey done in 2009 reported that 45 276 school girls became pregnant. Of these, 109 were in Grade 3. The lack of safe sexual practices among youth leaves Africa as a region with the highest rate of HIV and STIs in the world.” Connect-Ed was developed in a partnership between a condom manufacturer and the Department of Education to address these issues. The sex education campaign focuses on encouraging youth to abstain,

The projects provides pupils with support through Connect-Ed Buddy, an online guidance counsellor who can be accessed at www.connectedbuddy.co.za or on Facebook. “This online service provides pupils with the opportunity to ask the questions they might feel embarrassed to ask a friend or parent,” says Daphne Dinur of Connect-Ed. Pupils can submit questions anonymously and these are answered by a qualified social worker. It further aims to achieve “education and behaviour change through various platforms”. During visits to schools, the campaign uses role play depicting social scenarios teenagers face and a 30-minute video, titled The Line, to show the dangers of making uninformed choices. Schools also get free copies of the Connect-Ed book, the first South African book about teenage sexuality, by author Marina Coleman and cartoonist Sifiso Yalo. Connect-Ed will be visiting schools across the Western Cape until Monday 30 September. PHILIPPI: CHAIRPERSON IN THE DOCK

CPF head suspended

TAMMY PETERSEN

THE HEAD of the Philippi Community Police Forum has been suspended. This comes after chairperson Anthony Daniels appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge relating to the Firearms Control Act. It is alleged that Daniels’ registered gun was found in Khayelitsha two years ago. He had apparently not reported it stolen. Colonel Frankes de Vis, the Philippi police station commissioner, says the firearm was recently discovered to belong to Daniels during a random spot check. “The case has been postponed for legal representation,” he says. Hanif Loonat, the chairperson of the Western Cape Community Policing Board, says the suspension is mandatory in compliance with forum regulations. “The suspension will be in place for the duration of the court proceedings. Depending on the outcome, he will either be reinstated or requested to resign,” Loonat explains. “We maintain that Mr Daniels will re-

We have full faith in the justice system and will be closely monitoring the proceedings.” Hanover Park has one of the highest rates of illegal gun possession according to crime statistics. “In the last financial year, more than 100 firearms were confiscated in this policing precinct alone,” De Vis explains. “This remains a crime category which we will continue to focus on as guns in the wrong hands is a big concern.” Loonat says a board-level investigation by the executive members of the forum will also be conducted. “We need to ensure that members affiliated to the forum are an example to the community. Anyone with criminal investigations pending against them cannot be permitted to serve on these committees.” Weldon Cameron, the Philippi CPF public relations officer, says no official communication indicating Daniels’ suspension has yet been received. SOCIAL networks have become an online space to chat and make new friends. However, a Facebook page that encourages women, especially teens, to post half- or fully-naked photos of themselves for all users to see has sparked controversy. People’s Post readers share their thoughts.

ZIY ZIYAAD AAD FR FRANK ANK says parents have an important role to play when it comes to their children’s dignity. “They should go through their children’s phones and check what kind of things they get up to.”

WENDY ND NDABA ABA says teenage pregnancy is already at a worrying level and such platforms will only fuel young people’s sexual curiosity. “It also increases the potential of human trafficking and takes their attention away from schoolwork.”

PRISCILLA WENT PRISCILLA WENTZEL ZEL says she is absolutely against such networking pages. “If you don’t respect yourself, how do you expect other people to respect you? These girls are attracting all the wrong guys by acting this way.”

JOSEPH FREDRICKS believes the moral standing JOSEPH of young people is not where it should be. “When people act or dress a certain way you already judge before getting to know them. Something like this does not give them a good image.”

RORY D DUNN UNN says participants are degrading themselves by posting their photos. “Women need to respect themselves and not post any half- or fully-naked pictures on any site. What they are doing is not morally correct.”

SHAMEEMAH FR FRANK ANK says people who take part in such forums don’t think much of themselves. “It’s disgraceful. The group members are just a bunch of girls with a low self-esteem who are doing this for attention.”

BRENDA NGX NGXOLI OLI says there should rather be pages for drug support. “There’s already such a high child prostitution rate in our country and it’s promoted with such pages. The youth are bored and need more active facilities in their communities.”

Shot in the arm for children’s wellbeing VACCINATE your child for measles and polio at no cost. About a million children in the province are to be inoculated for these highly contagious diseases in a mass campaign over the next few months. The campaign, which was launched by national health minister Aaron Motsoaledi yesterday, will see children under five years old vaccinated regardless of their immunisation status. Polio and measles are caused by a virus and are potentially fatal in toddlers. Sithembiso Magubane, the spokesperson for the provincial health department, says almost 488 000 children between the ages of nine months and five years will be inoculated against measles while 561 000 children in the same age group will get two doses of polio vaccine, which will be administered within four weeks from each other. Provincial health minister Theuns Botha says the department plans is to immunise 95% of children under the age of five for both measles and polio during this campaign. This will ensure that the dangerous complications that can be caused by measles and the suffering and disability caused by polio is reduced, he says. “It is every parent and guardian’s duty to take their child to the clinic for immunisation and to sign a consent form for the child if he or she attends crèche,” Botha adds. Measles is a highly infectious illness that spreads from person to person via droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can lead to serious complica-

tions like pneumonia, blindness, brain infection or even death. Polio is an infectious disease affecting the nervous system that can result in permanent paralysis, deformity and sometimes death. A person with polio cannot be cured because the nerve cells destroyed by the virus never recover their function. Children will get their vaccinations at daycare. If your child does not attend school, they can get inoculated for free at your local clinic. Crèches have been issued with consent forms which parents and caregivers are urged to sign to ensure their children get the vaccines. Schools which have not received consent forms can contact their nearest clinic to make the necessary arrangements. V For the contact details of your nearest clinic, visit www.westerncape.gov.za.

and the forced removals from 1962 to 1980, both before and after the declaration. She witnessed the removals and the breakdown of a life and community that she had grown to love. Her story simultaneously inspiring and tragic. Living alone and desperately short of money, Sandra often sold her works on completion just to survive, or simply gave them away. Now in her 80s and living in Vredehoek, Sandra will be in conversation with Nancy Richards at a special tea at the Homecoming Centre. The talk starts at 14:00. Entrance fee is R50 which includes coffee or tea and koeksisters. To book your seat, phone 0 (021) 466 7200.

BRIGHTER FUTURES: Pride emanated from the faces of 43 students who recently graduated from the International Peace College South Africa, the only Islamic tertiary institute in this country officially recognised and accredited by the Department of Education. Furthermore, 32 of the graduates received a certificate for completing the one year Islamic Enrichment Course, while 11 students succeeded in the Higher Islamic Studies Course. The graduation ceremony, held at the college's Old Mutual Business Campus Hall, was further honoured by the presence of the Indonesian consulate. Abashia Modack and Insaaf Adams of the One Year Enrichment class attained distinction in all their subjects.

CRIME: SHOP OWNERS WARNED TO TIGHTEN SECURITY

Business robberies on the rise

TAMMY PETERSEN

SHOP owners are being warned to tighten up their security after a spike in business robberies in the Lansdowne policing precinct. Half a dozen armed robberies have already been reported this month alone. Last Tuesday, two men were arrested for holding up a Wetton Road superette and making off with goods worth tens of thousands of rands. Captain Allen Manuel, the operations

commander at Lansdowne police, says shortly before 22:00, a man entered the shop to buy airtime. He then left, but returned with two armed accomplices a short while later. “They ordered the shop owner and his brother to the back of the shop at gunpoint,” Manuel says. While the robbery was in progress, a customer entered the shop. “The man was pistol whipped and also sent to where the brothers were being held. They took the customer’s cellphone, wallet

Take a bite out of R6m kickst kickstart art YOUNG entrepreneurs can win big by entering the South African Breweries’ Kickstart competition. The SAB youth entrepreneurship development programme is open to corporate-minded people between 18 and 35 years who manage and run their own existing small businesses. Winners receive cash grants, business mentorship and an international learnership experience. Successful entrants selected to participate in the 18-month programme stand the chance of winning a share of R6m worth of business support. The funding and additional support will go towards growing their business into a sustainable and successful entity, a barrier many small to medium enterprises in South Africa come up against. In turn, SAB believes these businesses will have the ability to drive much needed job creation in the country. KickStart aims to address the challenges of poverty, inequality and job creation, The competition closes at noon on Friday 14 June. Successful candidates will be invited to a selection interview. A total of 60 entrepreneurs will be shortlisted from these interviews to participate in a two-week Business Skills Training Workshop in August. During the workshop, candidates are schooled on, among others, how to develop an effective business plan, which they present to an independent adjudication panel. The top 15 to 18 finalists are then promoted to the SAB KickStart Nationals. Each of these businesses is individually evaluated and a growth strategy and six-month mentorship programme developed for each. They also receive grant funding of between R100 000 and R200 000 for assets after a thorough needs analysis of their business is conducted. and bank cards, as well as his car keys.” After the robbers left, the shop owner saw that the trio had made off with an undisclosed amount of cash from the till, a laptop, 270 packets of cigarettes and 30 cartons of cigarettes. The customer’s Honda Ballade was also missing. “Fortunately, the car was fitted with a tracking device. The customer then found someone with a phone and called the tracking company who noted that the vehicle was in Nyanga,” he says.

Two of the robbers were cornered and arrested in the area by the company’s employees and members of the police’s K-9 unit. A gun and the victims’ cellphones were recovered in the car. The majority of business robberies have occurred at night at foreign-owned shops, he says. A business forum has been established to form a closer relationship between local business owners and police. Anyone interested in joining this forum can phone the station on 0 (021) 700 9000.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

Bus stop

THANK God it is not planes, trains and automobiles, but only Golden Arrow bus drivers on strike. Cape Town – and Capetonians in general – can ill afford getting to work late, nor having to cough up for escalating public transport costs. With the bus strike, the congestion nightmare on Cape Town highways is fast turning into the horror that is Johannesburg during peak hour traffic. Not that there is such a thing in Jo’burg. Traffic is awful throughout the day for the citizens up north. It is hardly a desired effect that is the legacy of one person to a car. While the taxi industry – and probably the railway services – is smiling at the sudden unexpected windfall, the commuters have to be satisfied with an apology from Golden Arrow. The bus company says there are “no winners in this situation as passengers are inconvenienced, staff members are not receiving wages, the company is not operating and the entire economy is suffering”. One wonders how it is possible for drivers affiliated to the SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union and the Transport and Omnibus Workers’ Union to demand an 18% wage increase. That was the first wage hike demand. But parties holding talks facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) failed to reach an agreement last week. John Dammert, the spokesperson for Golden Arrow Bus Services, has said that unions have decreased their wage increase demand to 13%. And employers have upped their offer to 8%. The CCMA, however, has suggested parties settle at 9%. Meanwhile, the commuters are left hanging – or waiting.

Imagine lives of the poor Your SMSes

I have a passion for the poor and needy. Let me just say “thank you” to the brave editors who have dared to publish my letters. I am truly grateful. Since my retirement, I am so grateful for all the blessings most people take for granted – the clothing, my home, the food on the table, my warm bed, my burning fire place in the cold and my vehicle. I am also very much aware of those less fortunate. I want to challenge (the media) to dedicate a reporter (and) photographer (to) interview a person who has lowered themselves to

scratch in a filthy bin. Go to a poor pensioner’s home and get pictures of the things we, the privileged, do not see and tell their story. This is not a guilt trip, but an understanding of real life in “Struggle Avenue”. Close your eyes and, for a brief moment, imagine you are poor – very poor. Keith Blake, Ottery People’s Post is intimately aware of the needs among readers and the good work done by NGOs. This newspaper regularly publishes stories of people in hardship, including those caught in poverty and evictions. – Deputy Ed

What happens after birth is important I RECKON Tauriq Hassen has gone overboard when he suggests “pregnant women who smoke should be charged with murder” (“Young lives hang in balance”, People’s Post, Opinions, 2 April). What is known now about smoking was not known 30 or 40 years ago, and my wife smoked through her three pregnancies with no bad results. My eldest son is a high-earning estate agent in Gauteng, my second son was a contract accountant in England who has now accepted a permanent position until the economy improves, and my daughter runs her own business from home. I think what happens after their birth counts for a lot. I insisted my wife stay at home when the children were small, instead of going out to work to keep up with the Joneses. When they reached school-going age I

joined the PTA. I worked so hard at fundraising that, when a member of the governing body left, I was coopted onto it and (later) became vice-chairperson. When my sons joined the Scouts I attended every meeting and was active in fundraising. In time I was voted onto the committee and eventually became chairperson. Where drinking to excess is concerned I agree with Mr Hassen, but a glass or two with dinner does no harm. I understand women are now getting pregnant and drinking to excess to (have) children with foetal alcohol syndrome, to access the government grant for raising a disabled child. These women have no income. They must be at their wits’ end to do this and I am extremely sorry for them. Perhaps some of the women Mr Hassen saw have done this? Peter N Marais

In loving memory of our dear mother FRIDAY 26 April marked seven years since we lost our mom, Cheryl van Reenen, at 49 years old to a stroke. Her sudden passing has left a void in our lives which can never be filled. No one can ever replace our mom. She stood in the gap as mom and dad to my two siblings and I. She was a woman of strength who hasn’t always had a fair share in life, but who always looked ahead for a better tomorrow. Mommy, today I would like to honour you. You have played such an important part in our lives and you are missed not only during

the milestones in our lives, but every single day. You have always been a great mother to us, who always went the extra mile. Losing a mother isn’t easy. It’s been seven years and still I long to see you or hear your voice. I pray that we can mould our children like you moulded us, always encouraging us to fulfil our dreams. Thank you for making us who we are today. I will always remember you, Mom. Chantal Willemburg (van Reenen)

. I feel sick when I see pupils sitting outside school gates while the school is in function. Teachers and principals are no good for teaching, as they suspend pupils – innocent children. The teachers are unproductive. Cosatu and Sadtu are fighting the government. Why don’t they come to schools and teach the pupils skills and help to improve the crisis? Stop worrying about the money you are earning. Give back to poor societies. You will just create problems as you fight the government and the innocent children fade away, while the pockets of their parents and government will just get dry. . Let’s be the modern, progressive country we are and legalise marijuana! . Regarding our troops being deployed to other countries. In my opinion this should only be allowed when and if there is a direct threat to our country – if not, we don’t step in! I am also of the opinion that we should use our troops here at home. It appears that the police are in dire need of such help! Toni . We need to realise, as beautiful as Cape Town is, there are many dangers and women particularly cannot be alone in quiet places. Caution and vigilance are essential, and safety in numbers should be our motto, sadly, especially when it comes to our young people. A concerned mom . It will be worthwhile that the bus strike ends once and for all. They have to come to some agreement. . Regarding the letter “Leave trolley pushers alone”. Trolley pushers stroll down the street shouting for scrap. They are a disturbance to those who are sleeping during the day because they have to work night shift. Some other means of income must be found for them. Besides, they become quite rude when no scrap is found. . A police officer in civilian clothes and I were standing at my gate talking. We noticed a trolley pusher walking up the street looking at all the houses as he went along. He did not appear to be looking for scrap. Was he doing reconnaissance? You decide. . Do the people at the maintenance office need more help with payouts? . Give me more TV news, not more mindless shows. At least I can keep abreast of current affairs and the world that I live in. SANGOMA RUE ST KIMS HERBS ORY FINANCIAL, MEN’S CLINIC LOST LOVER, DIVORCE I am Nicholas from Fish Hoek, I was financially poor all my properties were repossessed to make matters worse my wife left me after debts had come to my come up to my neck. My children turned to all kinds of evil activities. I tried many native doctors, but with no success. All all I had was me and the dark world. The day I heard about DR KIM speak on Algoa FM brought me back to life. I visited him and he prayed and washed me with his spiritual water and gave me a magic ring. There was no way I could pay him. Well, your only answer is DR KIM. Try him because I guarentee that he is the key to all!

SOCCER: PROMOTION TO NFD ON THE CARDS

Glendene eyes the silverware

LIAM MOSES

G

LENDENE UNITED are determined to keep the pressure on Cape Town All Stars as both sides go in search of possible promotion to the National First Division (NFD). United currently holds first place on the table, following a comprehensive 3-1 win over Stellenbosch University on Friday night. But All Stars have a game in hand and will likely restore their two point lead, and retake the summit when they face Ajax Cape Town at 19:00 tonight (Tuesday 30 April). Glendene need All Stars to lose once or draw twice if they are to permanently annex first place, take the Safa Second Division title and qualify for the NFD play-offs. Glendene coach Duran Francis says the club will not focus on their rivals and instead keep the pressure on the champions elect by winning all five of their last games. “For me it’s about what we do. If we were going to be worried about All Stars then we would have been stressed all season, because they have been playing really good football,” says Francis. “We have to be realistic and not disrespect to the other teams, but we want to pick up the full points against everybody. It’s not going to be easy because we are playing teams who are fighting relegation. “We know, as a club and squad, it’s not going to be easy and that it’s up to us and how much we want it. That goes for FC Tygerberg

and All Stars as well. Whoever wants it, will have to fight hard.” All Stars and Glendene have lost the same amount of games, but All Stars have won one more, while Glendene have drawn one more. The Lansdowne-based club have just five games left, with all five of their opponents in the bottom or lower top half of the table. Francis’ side will face Mitchell’s Plain United (A), Old Mutual (H), Jomo Powers (A), Peacemakers (H) and finish off against Idas Valley (A). Francis, the former Bay United captain and Santos player believes his team, and third placed FC Tygerberg, can still win the title if the squad’s younger players can handle the pressure. “It’s a matter of who can handle the pressure. You try to tell the players not to worry and that there’s no pressure, but there are some young boys in the teams and none of them have really played in situations like this,” he says. “It’s difficult – as a coach, you have to understand that some of the boys will feel the pressure. “It’s good that they experience these things. Whether the team goes up or not, at least they experienced that in an early stage of their careers.” Francis adds even if Glendene do not win the league this year, fighting for the title and playing in high pressure situations will have helped his players improve and build character. Hammies hammer SKW in derby H

AMILTONS fired a warning shot at their Super League A title rivals after a crushing victory over City Bowl neighbours SK Walmers on Saturday. Hammies scored six tries and conceded just one, to beat the Green Point club 39-11. But despite the comprehensive victory head coach Anton Moolman believes his side have still not hit top gear. “Durb-Bell, Stellenbosch and SK Walmers have all enjoyed the Varsity Cup and Community Cup, so they have had a number of tight games under their belt,” he says. “We have had friendlies here in Cape Town – the majority of which we won by 60 or 70 points. Our first test was last week, against Stellenbosch, and besides two soft tries, we were really competitive in the game. So our season will get better. We just have to make sure we continue the climb in terms of performance and execution.” Moolman adds, although his side is currently focused on short-term goals, they will be challenging for the title if they improve

as expected. “If we do that, come of the end of the season we will be up there and challenging. But for me, it’s game by game – and Durb-Bell next week.” Hammies dominated the derby from the kickoff and scored just seconds into the game, when fullback Jonno van Zyl crossed over in the corner. The hosts increased their lead with a penalty from Wilko de Wet and a try by left wing Dougal Robertson, but SK responded with two penalties from the boot of scrumhalf Morne Adams. This left the half-time score reading 13-6. Hammies again crossed soon after the break, with Van Zyl dotting down around the third minute, but the visitors hit back with a try from right wing Layton Bezuidenhout. Walmers struggled to defend against Hamiltons’ power at the contact point, intelligent attacking around the fringes and skilful offloading. The game was then put to bed when Hammies scored three tries in the last 20 min-

utes, with Dustin Jinka, Nicholas Pearson and Waldo Prinsloo all claiming five-pointers. Moolman chalked up the win as “one of the more resounding” victories over SKW during his tenure as coach. “I enjoy trying to play a total brand of rugby. In the off-season we have worked hard on trying to take our game to a different level,” he says. “Last year is in the past, but there were games that we lost very narrowly. The guys are focused and they have set their season goals, and they work hard at training. You can only play as well as your opponents let you and I thought we created good momentum today. When you have momentum your off-loads start to work, allowing the guys to enjoy the game more than when on the back foot.” Hamiltons face another stern test this Saturday, when they travel to DurbanvilleBellville. Durb-Bell, who finished second in the league last year, claimed a narrow 20-18 win over UCT on Saturday.

V Meanwhile, in Super League B, Primrose beat Hands and Heart 45-19 to record their fourth consecutive victory. The win has cemented Primrose’s position at the top of the log and further enhanced their title credentials.
