‘Why did they stop now?’ TAMMY PETERSEN

A

FTER up to two months of living in cold, rat-infested containers during the upgrade of their council flats in Hanover Park, residents are threatening to move back into their stripped flats as no work has been done to the rented homes in the last three weeks. Howick Court residents are infuriated that contractors have stopped working on the multi-million rand triple-story flat upgrade owing to the ongoing gang violence in the area. According to the City of Cape Town, no date has been set for work to resume, and it may well stop work in the area entirely until the gang war is over. But locals, who are now forced to live in containers in Lonedown Road indefinitely, say they would rather move into their stripped flats immediately than spend another night in what is commonly referred to as “Container City”. Agnes Farao (65) says she can no longer bear sleeping in her temporary home because she can feel the cold “in my bones”. “I just want to go back to my home. I am literally sick of living here because of these wet, icy conditions. My container is leaking, and since there is no-one working on the site, there is no-one to fix the maintenance issues here either. I just can’t take this anymore.” The tenants were only supposed to stay in the containers for six to eight weeks, but, says Hassiem de Roos, one month later the flats have only been stripped. “No upgrading has taken place in our flats. But what makes us angry the most is that the council didn’t come here to inform us what the holdup was and when we would be able to go home. They just left us here in these hokkies.”

INCOMPLETE: Howick Court may resemble an active building site, but no work has been done to the block of flats in three weeks.Photo: Tammy Petersen An irate Rashida Arendse says council, instead of worrying about its workers, should be worried about its tenants. “We are sitting in the middle of the gangsters. This is a battlefield! No shots were fired on the workers when they were upgrading Galilee, Pelikan and Galway Courts, so why did they stop now? “If they knew this gang fight was going to affect their work, why did they move us out of our flats? We could have stayed until there was clarity as to whether the schedule would be affected. Now they expect us to just sit here and wait until they decide to come back to work. What nonsense!” Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements, says the site has been closed on numerous occasions due to the high risk of workers getting injured or killed by the gunfire. “Some of the contractor’s staff had also received threats, which the contractor is not willing to ignore,” he says. “Consequently, the con-

tractor has left site and tabled certain conditions before moving back, the most important being the permanent presence of the police force at the site.” Sonnenberg says it is not yet known how long the Howick Court residents will have to stay in the containers. “Once the tenants have moved out of their homes, there is very little chance for them to move back in again until the whole building has been handed over, as the building contractually becomes a building site and is strictly out of bounds to the public. “We are contemplating completing the blocks currently under construction and then pulling out of Hanover Park completely until calm is restored. Although this is an unfortunate last resort, the City cannot be expected to continue a contract at the risk of losing life or limb.” But the tenants are not the only ones affected by the interruption. A worker, who asks not to be named, says the labourers are also up in arms as

they aren’t being paid while the work is on hold. “It’s not right that they are messing around with our livelihood. Earlier this year, when the gangsters were also deurmekaar, it was okay for us to work through the most of violence, and not one incident which put our lives in danger took place. Why is there a problem now? We have a project to finish – let’s do it, man!” Moerida Adams, who worked on the site as a floor finisher, says she has been living from hand to mouth for the past three weeks. “No-one warned us that we might be ceasing work. I reported at the site on Monday 1 August and was later told we would only be paid to work until 10:00 that day. We have been waiting for them to call for almost a month to tell us when work will resume, but up till today there has been no word from management.” There has since been no other income in her household. “Both my son and I depended on that job to put food on the table, but now our pockets are empty because we are not putting in the hours. This was supposed to be a steady income for my family. What about the people who use the money to keep the pot on the boil? How can they simply inform you that no work will take place, leaving you out in the cold like that?” Sonnenberg says the City “understands the seriousness of the situation”. “There have been top-level investigations into alleviating the current plight ... All those workers affected by the work stoppage were informed, and all subcontractors were given letters explaining the unfortunate situation when the continued site closure became evident.”

Two murdered in three days TAMMY PETERSEN

T

HE search is on for a Manenberg man wanted in connection with the murder of his brother-in-law, who was stabbed in the kitchen of their house after an argument about drugs. William “Ice” Matto (44), from Towerkop Road, bled to death from a single stab wound in front of two of his young daughters on Thursday. Eyewitnesses told police that Matto was knifed in the chest after a heated confrontation in the kitchen of the house at about 14:30. His common-law wife, Shireen Ontong, says she was lying in her bedroom with her sick child when she heard a commotion. “My son came to tell me that his dad had been stabbed. Ice had tried to run away, but he collapsed at the front door,” the shellshocked woman says. His assailant tried to have another go at him, but he managed to crawl inside the house and into her bedroom. “He tried to speak to me, but nothing came out of his mouth. Then he stopped moving. My children stared and started screaming when they saw their daddy was dead. There was so much blood.” Matto was declared dead at the scene. His assailant had fled. Ontong says she and Matto had been together for 22 years. Despite his drug habit, she says, he was a “good man”. “I can’t believe that I’m never going to see him again. No matter what he did, he was the father of my children. They are so traumatised by what happened because they loved him.”

CRIME SCENE: Locals crowd around the house of William Matto shortly after his murder. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Ian Bennett says although the suspect has not yet been found, all leads are being followed up; he is confident an arrest will be made soon. •In a separate incident, Manenberg officers are appealing to the public for information in connection with a murder after a 26-yearold man was killed at 05:45 on Saturday morning. It is understood that the man was in Peta Walk, looking for a friend at a Wendy house. Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC

Teen arrested after shooting TAMMY PETERSEN

A

13-YEAR-OLD boy from St Lucia Court, Hanover Park, was left devastated after a single bullet left him paralysed and unable to ever kick his beloved soccer ball again. Riyaad Kader, a Grade 6 scholar at Voorspoed Primary School, is in hospital with a collapsed lung, and is unable to breathe on his own after he was hit in the spine when five men opened fire at the youngster, his brother and two friends while they were standing on the staircase next to the Kaders’ home on Thursday night. Riyaad’s brother was hit in the left hand, a 16-year-old friend was wounded in both thighs, and a 34-year-old man suffered a bullet scrape to the back of an ear. While the other three have made a quick recovery after the incident and have already been released from hospital, Riyaad’s family say he is shattered that he will never be able to walk again. His aunt, Ruwaydah, says Riyaad had walked up the stairs to call his brother because it was late and his mother wanted him inside the house. “He had barely got there when these guys came and started shooting at them. How

could they do that? They could hear the screams were that of children, yet they continued to shoot,” she says. “He is a lovely child, and we are so shocked that this has happened to him. This has hit us like a tonne of bricks – I never thought that something like this would happen to someone in our family.” She says the teenager refuses to talk, and doesn’t want to believe that he won’t walk again. “He is paralysed from the chest down, and he has just become a teenager. He loved soccer. Now he won’t be able to play again. We

van Wyk says that when he did not find his friend, he left, accompanied by a mutual friend who offered to take him to where the man was. As they were leaving, two men approached and fired wildly at the Wendy house, then ran off, Van Wyk says. “After the shooting it was discovered that the 26-year-old was fatally wounded, and he died on the scene due to the extent of his injuries.” The 39-year-old man who was with him at

the time was shot in the head and taken to hospital for treatment. “Other people who were in the Wendy house at the time was also injured by shrapnel,” Van Wyk says. A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened for investigation. Although the motive for the shooting is currently unknown, the possibility that it is gang related has not been ruled out. Anyone with information on the case is requested to phone the Manenberg police on (021) 699-9400 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

are all so concerned and worried about him. He is still so young.” Warrant Officer Ettienne Conradie, spokesperson for the Philippi police, says although the gunmen fled the scene, one man was arrested during a raid in Johndown Walk shortly after the incident. The suspect, only 17, is alleged to be a member of the Mongrels gang. The teenager ap-

peared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Monday).

GRATEFUL: Some of the patients of Eikehof Interim Home are seen with the Chavda family. Photos: Tammy Petersen

A pack to show they care TAMMY PETERSEN

S

HE SMILES brightly, with tears glittering in her tired-looking eyes. It’s been years since she received such a lovely present, says Patricia van Zyl, as she slowly unwraps the package, careful not to damage the bow that holds her gift together. The parcel doesn’t contain jewellery or imported chocolates, but it means the world to the 23 residents living at Eikehof Interim Home in Athlone, which cares for people coming from outside the city for cancer treatment. Thanks to the dogged determination of a young Penlyn Estate woman and her family, the gift will be one of the few happy memories the patients will remember from their life-threatening battle with the disease. Priya Chavda managed to raise enough toiletries to provide each resident with a care pack, which contains everything from soap and toothpaste to a hot-water bottle and hand towel. She did this by simply posting a request on Facebook; thanks to help from her family and friends, she was overwhelmed with donations, which had to be crammed into a basket, carefully wrapped with coloured ribbon and crinkle paper.

WITH LOVE: Madhuri Chavda has a chat with Wecott Plaatjies as she hands over his gift.

This isn’t the first time the Chavda family have done their bit for the home, which is run by the Cancer Association of South Africa. In 2008, Priya’s mother, Madhuri, who is also a cancer survivor, raised R35 000 towards renovations for the home. Two years before that, she collected R15 000 at the annual Cuppa for Cansa event. While much was done with the donations – including renovations of the facility’s kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms – the cancer haven is dire need of a washing machine, bed linen and towels, which are currently in a threadbare state. Volunteers are also needed to help the residents with arts and crafts, gardening and fundraising, and to help take the patients on outings. Lansdowne businessman robbed in driveway T

HEY CAME SILENTLY, simply pointing their guns at him and his son with the unsaid threat: do something and we’ll shoot. The experience left a Lansdowne family shaken and traumatised – and over R10 000 poorer. The man, who asks to remain anonymous to protect his family, says he visited Standard Bank in Lansdowne Road at about 10:30 last Saturday morning to cash a cheque. “I left about 15 minutes later, and when I got home, I decided against putting the money in my safe and left it in my shirt pocket, as I had to pay one of my staff members at my panel-beating business,” the Dreyton Road resident says. “My 19-year-old son and I were busy in our driveway when I noticed these four guys approaching us, and something told me that there was something suspicious about them.” The men walked right up to them, and two pulled out guns. The resident believes the other two were also armed, but kept their weapons out of sight. “The one guy put his against my head, while the other aimed at my son. My 16-yearold and seven-year-old were standing in the garage, but luckily the older one grabbed his baby brother and ran into the house. “While pointing his gun against my head, the robber just reached into my pocket and took my money. Just like that. He obviously knew that I had the cash on me, so he must have followed me from the bank.” Once they had what they wanted, the men ran a few metres down the road and got into a black Opel, which was parked with all its doors open. “I have been living in Lansdowne for 17, years and this is the first time something like this has happened to me,” the resident says. “I was so shocked that these guys had the balls to do something like this in broad daylight, but I am more relieved that nothing

happened to my family.” After laying a charge of armed robbery, the businessman was given permission to view footage from the bank’s surveillance tapes – and immediately recognised one of his assailants. “This guy was standing right behind me in the queue when I went to deposit my cheque,” he recalls. “I vaguely distinguished a second man as one of the four robbers, and they seemed to have been monitoring me and my transaction.” He says his children were stunned and emotional after the incident. “But they seem to be doing okay. I arranged that their teachers keep an eye on them at school for any change in their behaviour. What happened is definitely an extremely traumatic experience.” Ross Linstrom, spokesperson for Standard Bank, says the financial institution takes the safety of both its customers and staff “very seriously”, and advises that customers, as far as possible, avoid withdrawing large amounts of money. “Aside from it being an expensive way to transact, it also makes you a potential target to syndicates who target clients by watching their movements. An electronic funds transfer is the safer and cheaper alternative,” he says. He adds that bank security staff are trained to notice people who seem to be watching customers instead of making transactions at the facility. “You do get syndicates where criminals pretend to be customers. If they are spotted, immediate action is taken against them.” Furthermore, Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesperson for the Lansdowne police, advises all people withdrawing money at any bank to ask someone to accompany them as there is safety in numbers. “Also, always be alert and keep a lookout to see if anyone is watching you. If your gut tells you something is wrong, you’re probably right,” he says. “If you think you are being followed, don’t

go home. Drive to the nearest police station and watch to see if the vehicle tails you. If you are still uneasy, ask a police officer to escort you home.”

While no arrests have been made, all leads are being followed up, Lakey assures. Anyone able to shed light on the incident is urged to phone the station on (021) 700-9000.

Lilies on the mountain W

OMEN’S DAY was extra special for a group of seniors and youths from Lily Ministries Church in Manenberg – they got to venture up Table Mountain, many of them for the first time. After months of planning, the public holiday turned out even better than any of them had hoped. A lovely, cloudless day gave the congregants the perfect view of the city and allowed them to marvel unhindered at Cape

Town’s most beautiful attraction. The seniors, who are between 64 and 81, deeply appreciated their time in the midst of nature, and said they felt like they were on top of the world. The congregants thank pastors Winston and Margie Fouten for going the extra mile to make their dream a reality, as well as Lisa Patterson and the Table Mountain team for their generosity towards the seniors.

NEVER TOO OLD: Wearing their most comfortable shoes, the seniors showed they still had plenty of energy.

OCALS say they can finally sleep easy after continuous operations by the City of Cape Town’s Vice Squad have cut the number of ladies who ply their trade in the Lansdowne precinct’s “red light district”. Residents have nothing but praise for the unit, saying that this is the first time in years the “busy winter season” has been this quiet. On Wednesday night, the squad held another operation from Wetton Circle to to Wynberg via Lansdowne Road; 11 prostitutes were issued with fines totalling R3 500. “We were busy for three hours – from 22:00 till 01:00 – and profiled two new offenders,” says Nathan Ladegourdie, spokesperson for the city’s Law Enforcement division. Owing to the number of complaints received from locals, operations are held with-

in the vicinity about twice a week. “This is a marked decrease from the number recorded on precious occasions tallied over the last four months,” Ladegourdie says. Riedewaan Adams, who lives close to the prostitution hotspot, says the “local embarrassment” seems finally to be under control. “They are disappearing like shoes at a sale. This is absolutely fantastic, because we were forced to live with them for many years with little to no success with law enforcement. “Our driveways were used as parking bays for these women and their clients, and it’s been a while since I saw a strange vehicle on my property.” Ian Jackson has also praised the squad’s efforts, referring to it as the “A-Team”. “It’s fantastic to see our complaints bearing fruit. These women were a real nuisance and an unwelcome element in our area. Good riddance to the prostitutes, and well done to the unit.”

Heavy arrest in Hanover Park TAMMY PETERSEN

A HEFTY discovery was made at a house in Athburg Walk, Hanover Park, when a haul of over 1 000kg in stolen cast iron was confiscated on Thursday. A total of 35 council-owned drain covers were discovered in the kitchen and back yard of the property thanks to a tip-off from a neighbour. Warrant Officer Ettienne Conradie, spokesperson for the Philippi police, says officers rushed to the home after they were informed. When they got to there, homeowner let them in without any trouble. “We searched through the house, and when we got to the kitchen we discovered a trolley filled with drain covers, as well as broken up

pieces of iron,” he explains. “We continued to look through the house, and when we went outside, we found more pieces of the covers.” When the police asked the five people present who the items belonged to, no-one would admit guilt. “They were all arrested for possession of stolen property. The suspects, as well as the very heavy evidence, were taken to the station.” Conradie says thieves are thinking of new ways to pawn council property and bypass stringent laws. “However, even in its brokendown state, council property can still be recognised relatively easily. Therefore, if any scrap yard is found to have bought these goods, they will face legal action.” The five appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Monday).

A noble fight HUNDREDS of women, and men, took to the streets of the Cape Town CBD at the weekend clad in outfits their mothers would probably frown upon to protest against sexist perceptions that women should watch what they wear or “rightfully” face the bitter consequences. Waving placards and dressed in naughty numbers including mini skirts, boob tubes and fish nets, the skimpy outfits were aimed at showing that a woman’s attire was not to blame for her being raped. And while the internationally recognised “SlutWalk” received much attention on the streets and in the media, the question begging to be asked, is whether a country like South Africa is ready to wholeheartedly adopt this otherwise progressive perspective. Is this just one small step towards chipping away at mountains of tragic misconceptions about women and their sexuality? Statistics reveal that South Africa is the world’s highest ranking nation for reported cases of rape. Ironically, a South African MP tweeted about the SlutWalk wondering whether he would “get lucky” if he had attended the event. The crimson faced MP later apologised claiming he had not been briefed on the reason for the march. But the MP’s comment illustrates the view, in all fairness, held by many South African men (and some women) from all cultures. SA is a nation borne of somewhat conservative roots and paternalistic ideals where the woman has traditionally been expected to know her place; in the kitchen, good for little else except playing a nurturing role. It is true that the New South Africa has ushered in legislation aimed at backing the progression of women. SA women, by law, are the masters of their own sexuality, reproductive health and political views; and with all this in place the time has never been more ripe for social reform. SlutWalks are a fun way for women to convey a powerful message, but the real impact is made in everyday conversations and responses in the home, classroom, office, sportsfield and, even places of worship. It is only once women realise and value their worth, that they stop becoming victims of stereotyping and abuse.

Your SMSes Stop dumping on the tracks! THE crossing across the railway line in Lansdowne is and will remain our local dumping area. Members of Kenwyn and Lansdowne buy these nice and expensive houses in the area, and then mess it up by dumping. Residents pay others to dump at the crossing. Old furniture, garden refuse, old car oil, building rubble, roofing sheets and household rubble. The rats are increasing in numbers, the bergies use the area as a toilet, and it’s becoming more and more of an eyesore. Don’t blame council, as they do come

clean. And Kenwyn area is the closest to our free dumping site in Wynberg, which is open seven days a week. The residents need to be responsible, and be really proud of their spaces and parks. Our area is a haven for those who want to sleep under a bridge, and they make that area look so terrible that you don’t want to walk in it or use the shops. Residents please, you need to be more responsible. MSK Kenwyn

People’s Post hits Australia I CAME across the Peoples Post online a few weeks ago, and I am enjoying reading all the stories about the areas where I lived previously. I enjoyed the story on Oaklands High School, as I matriculated there in 1972. Great to see that it is finally being upgraded and not making way for housing. I hope the school community will take good care of it and prevent the graffiti that I saw in the photo from occurring again. Back in those days the school was in a pristine condition, and such vandalism was not tolerated. Having lived in Hanover Park for a number of years as well, the story of the gentleman who had started a garden in the area was really inspiring. I would like to think that there are more people in Hanover Park who are prepared to stand togeth-

er to make the surrounding area more appealing. I wish the gentleman well in his recovery after his accident. It is disturbing and sad to read how the people in Hanover Park are fearful of the gangsterism in the area. I know there are more good people in Hanover Park than the ones who want to destroy society. Just as the people of South Africa withstood the injustices of segregation in the past, I hope that same resolve will evoke a determination to stamp out the crime activity in society. The people of these affected areas deserve a peaceful and enjoyable life. Thanks for your publication, which allows me to keep in touch. TREVOR MARSHALL South Australia

Illegal shebeens in Hanover Park . Do the shebeen owners pay tax on the thousands of rands they make? . About the shebeens in Hanover Park: this country is doomed. A nation that cares zero for its youth, the aged or the poor, and where the laws seem to favour bad deeds, does not deserve growth, calm or peace. A deeply saddened South African By the way . Why must council always outsource work? Why don’t they employ people who can do the job? . In response to Mark Kleinschmidt’s letter published last week: What planet are you on? While the constitution sounds too good to be true on paper, in practice it’s largely ignored by our not so worthy politicians. Wake up, buddy. . That person who made the statement in last week’s SMSes about the ANC is very stupid. Not the whole of the ANC is bad and they don’t steal money. Stop with your crappy stereotypes! . Politicians don’t steal money – they just take it before it gets used on voters they don’t even know. Ebrahim . Table Mountain National

Park is clearly a cash-cow for the Parks Board, hence their continued bold abuse of residents. Is it time for TMNP to become CPTMP? . I love dogs but before even thinking of owning own, I would ensure that I train my dog and have a fully fenced yard. I would not want to offend my neighbours with incessant barking and howling day and night. It’s a damn nightmare living with this. Sleep deprived . I can’t understand how the selectors chose De Villiers as coach. He just doesn’t fit in. Lose the World Cup, Boks, and give De Villiers the boot! . Why, when you are over 40, does society make you feel worthless, homeless and jobless? Abba . It finally came on the news that there’s going to be a toll fee to use the N1 and N2 on the Wine Route very soon. The old and poor won’t be able to drive there. Naz, Belgravia . Thank you to the ladies who donated wool to me for my charity knitting. Bless you all. Yolanda . I am looking for Amelia, the daughter of the late Anne Williams and Thomas Jacobs. Please contact Mr Jacobs on 078 380 0234.

Tyred out . I have had the same tyre inflation problem at different garages. They don’t bother to maintain equipment so the pump isn’t calibrated. Fed-up driver . To the concerned driver who had his wheels inflated with different air: was it cold air or hot air? Next time put in your own air, you airhead. Municipal workers’ strike . Workers demand increases above the inflation rate but it’s nothing if your property rates increase by more than 50% with every new valuation. Who’s fooling who? . It’s only greed that drives these municipal workers to strike. Vendors at most train stations have closed shop because if they don’t, their shops will be looted. Please help . I have a two-year-old daughter who needs a nebuliser as she has asthma. I cannot afford to buy a machine to help her when she gets her attacks. Please help if you can. Concerned mother . Can anybody please donate some paint to me? I’m a female pensioner and I paint on cloth. Thank you and God bless.

TOUCHING SUCCESS: The South African Touch Association recently sent six teams to Scotland to compete at the World Cup of Touch, held over five days at Edinburgh University and attended by 26 countries. World Touch Rugby powerhouses Australia and New Zealand dominated the tournament in most of the divisions, and South Africa held onto its third position overall, winning bronze medals in the men’s, mixed and senior mixed competitions, while the men’s over35s won silver after a final battle with Australia. The local Spring Leagues kick off on 5 September, and people of “all shapes and sizes” are invited to join and take up the sport of touch rugby. Platinum Stars snatch Paulse TASMIN CUPIDO

AFTER much deliberation about his future and the team to which he will pledge his allegiance for the 2011-2012 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season, Athlone local Nathan Paulse signed a two-season contract with Platinum Stars yesterday (Monday). Paulse will again join Platinum Stars coach Owen da Gama in Rustenberg after being head-hunted by him for a number of years. The two worked together last season when Paulse was on loan from Swedish club Hammarby FC to Bloemfontein Celtic last season, when Da Gama coached the side. According to Paulse’s father, Jeff, one of the reasons for his son’s decision was the fact that Da Gama has been “persistent” in getting the player on board since his days as the coach of Silver Stars FC. “The decision was made with his head and not his heart – it was in his best interest to go to Stars as they also put the best deal on the table,” Jeff says. “Nathan wasn’t in a hurry to get to a team, but he really is happy with his decision. Being a Cape Town boy and very family-orientated made the decision difficult, but in the end one has to realise that his career is a business and a club is a company – Stars was on top of his list.”

Paulse was also in talks with SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic and a Belgian club. He was also still contracted with Hammarby, with whom he signed in 2008. “The negotiations were a long process, with him still being contracted,” Jeff says. “The coach and guys at Stars really went all out, and were persistent in getting Nathan out of his contract to be a permanent fixture for them.” And Paulse’s main aim during

HOLD on to your seats, folks, this is going to be a good one – for the first time in history we will have two members of International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) sharing a stage, when the IFBB Western Province Bodybuilding Championships muscle up on Saturday. American Toney Freeman, who won the 2011 IFBB Europa Super Show in Dallas earlier this month, will act as guest poser. Freeman will also host a seminar from 14:00 to 16:00, talking about nutrition, contest preparation and the road to the Mr Olympia competition. South Africa’s finest at present, Marius Dohne – a crowd favourite wherever he goes and winner of the Tampa Pro show in Florida recently – will also be in attendance. Due to the remarkable growth bodybuilding has seen in recent times, it was necessary for the upcoming competition to move to a bigger venue, says Sakkie Changuion, president of the IFBB Western Province. “We decided to use His People Centre at N1 City. It can host roughly 4 000 people, and we have the luxury

of big screens running live. The shows are getting bigger, more people are entering, and we have many more spectators than in previous years. “Having athletes such as Marius going to America and actually winning just motivates the rest of the local bodybuilders,” he adds. A Western Province team will be selected to compete at the South African championships from 7 to 10 September at the same venue. The categories to be contested are: juniors under-18, juniors under-21, under 75kg, over 75kg, classic bodybuilding, ladies’ beach bikini, ladies’ fitness bikini, ladies’ body fitness, ladies’ fitness, wheelchair division, masters over 40 years, bantamweight, welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight. Registration and weigh-in take place from 08:00 to 10:00. Pre-judging starts at 10:45. Entrance to the pre-judging session costs R20 per person. Coach Da Gama was quoted saying: “I have always been a great admirer of Nathan Paulse, and I understand how to utilise him to REACHING FOR THE STARS: Former Ajax Cape Town striker Nathan Paulse has signed with get the best from Platinum Stars. Strong WP presence in SA squad TASMIN CUPIDO

THE recent announcement that the South African junior softball squad will participate in the Junior Women’s World Championship in Cape Town in December saw a total of 12 Western Province players and officials included as part of the team. The tournament will be held from Wednesday 7 to Thursday 17 December at the Turfhall Stadium in Crawford, Athlone. Sixteen countries will be participating in the tournament, and the City of Cape Town is presently upgrading the local stadium, which is the home of softball in the city. And with eight players and four officials set to be wearing the green and gold during the two-week tourney, they will see the event as their opportunity to show their worth in the diamond against some of the world’s best. Carly Mulder, Lauren Mulder, Justine Steward, Kayl-Anne Stof-

fels, Kathryn van Boom, Nicole Alexander, Natalie Abrahams and Alex Fortune will all represent the country in the international tournament, while Shahieda Majiet (trainer), Lynn Alexander (assistant manager), Lester Smith (head coach) and Shihaam Nacerodien (assistant coach) will deal with the logistics and coaching aspects as part of the coach team. The players range from the under-16 to under-19 age groups. And the girls are looking to get as much support behind them as they can while they prepare for the competition, says assistant manager Lynn Alexander. “The squad was selected after the under-19 tournament in Durban in December and several training sessions,” she says. “These training sessions made it possible for management to finecomb the squad and narrow it down from well over 40 players to the final squad of 17 and four reserves.” The team was announced after the National Provincial under-23 tournament held in Durban two

weeks ago. “Having so many players from WP in the squad really is an achievement, with Gauteng being the only province to have more players in the squad,” Alexander says. “Most of these girls have come through the ranks – including the school teams – so this really says a lot about the development of youths in softball in this province.” The girls have been training since April, and are looking forward to playing in front of their friends and family in the South African colours. “When we went to the Junior Youth Championships in Prague in 2009, we only had three supporters with us, so it is going to be great to have most of the stadium backing us,” Alexander says. “The girls are nervous, yet excited, and are really seeing this as an opportunity to showcase their abilities on the international softball stage. They will give it their best shot to make Softball South Africa, their parents, their friends and the entire country proud of them.”
