Waterfront battles continues LAILA MAJIET

NATIONAL government will have to verify Consol’s mining licence following a High Court application by the glass giant to prohibit Proudly Manenberg from using the Waterfront. Consol sought to get a final order against the organisation to stop them from occupying the land. But Mario Wanza, chairperson of Proudly Manenberg, says everybody has always been welcome to make use of the Waterfront on Vygiekraal Road.

He says the court was made aware of how Consol is in breach of its mining licence which should be reviewed. The company is allegedly not complying with health and safety regulations or fulfilling their social responsibility to the community, says Wanza. National government has also been dragged into the middle of the battle. Government will now have until 23 October to determine Consol’s compliancy with regard to their mining licence before the case resumes on 20 February next year. “This is a victory for the people of

Manenberg. Consol has been forced to sit down with our organisation to discuss its social responsibility in uplifting the community and sharing its wealth with the people of Manenberg,” he says. People’s Post last reported on Consol (“Proudly Manenberg executive members arrested”, 29 October 2011) when four of the organisation’s members were arrested for trespassing after members, including Wanza, marched to the glass manufacturer’s offices. Proudly Manenberg had met with management about their demands for owner-

ship of the local Waterfront, as well as partial ownership of the company being given to the people of Manenberg. However, Thami Mkhuzangwe, the human resources director of Consol, says the company has always met the necessary corporate social investment criteria. Wanza has also committed to taking forward the organisations campaign which calls for the nationalisation of mines. “”It must be considered so that land can be shared,” he says. Despite numerous attempts, People’s Post was unable to obtain comment from the glass giant.

It seems to be a time of things coming to an end; the London Olympics 2012, Ramadan, cold fronts... The extinguishing of the Olympic flame during the closing ceremony last night, symbolised the end of the world’s most spectacular sporting event that, for the past 17 days, united 204 nations and captivated billions of viewers. In the end, Team South Africa could stand proud with an impressive medal count that secured us 25th place; making it our most successful Olympics since readmission to international sport in Barcelona in 1992. Several factors made the Games a success, including a country united in passionately embracing this historic sporting event, creative collaboration, sheer hard work and the pivotal role played by the thousands of volunteers involved in staging a show of this magnitude. With just days to go before Eid-ul-Fitr (the festival of charity marking the end of Ramadan and celebrated by Muslims worldwide), organisations such as Nakhlistan Feeding Scheme are gearing up to feed thousands of poor families. Last year, Nakhlistan cooked over 150 pots of food for distribution to, among others, mosques and retirement homes and prisons. The ingredients were bought from funds raised during Ramadan; the labour on the freezingly cold night before Eid was lovingly provided by volunteers. Events such as the Olympics, and altruistic initiatives such as Nakhlistan’s cannot unfold with the same efficiencies and success

were it not for volunteers who engage in a spirit of charity, positivity and love for the cause with which they identify. I have been blessed with the opportunity to volunteer for a few years, and while my goal was not to gain any reward from this, the joy and satisfaction I derived after a few hours of lay counselling, outclassed even my best salary. The path to volunteering is not easy and I first offered my services to a retirement home in my neighbourhood – for all of one day. After helping to serve lunch, chat to several elderly people, open a packet of Niknaks for one and gawking at a very young-looking retired woman, I grudgingly acknowledged that I was of no purpose. I did not return. My fault may have been that in my pristine (at that time anyway; I was much younger) mind, my vision of volunteerism extended to sitting on a bench with the late afternoon sun streaming onto me through a window, reading to an adorable granny in a pretty room. Reality check! Not willing to admit defeat though, I assessed my skill set and where I could best impart value. This led me to lay counselling, some late shifts after a full-time job in the media and inadvertently, a journey of self-healing through selfless deeds. As for the cold front, no amount of volunteering will sway what are clearly elements beyond our control. ’Til next time, go well ConnectED is a weekly column by People’s Post editor Feroza Miller-Isaacs who can be contacted on feroza@peoplespost.co.za.

RISKY: Schoolboys use the thoroughfare in a group to keep safe. Photo: Summer Jacobs

Thieves thrive in thoroughfare RESIDENTS believe the closure of a thoroughfare behind Belthorn Primary School will rid the area of scoundrels who misuse it. Situated between Kinders and Conquest streets in Belthorn Estate, the thoroughfare has become a danger and eyesore to surrounding residents. About two-metres wide, the thoroughfare is notorious for robberies and assault. It has also been described as a health hazard as people use the area to dump as well as defecate. Colleen Wentzel, the secretary of Belthorn Primary School and a member of the Belthorn/Crawford Civic Association, recalls an incident in which a student was robbed and the criminals used the narrow lane as an escape route. “The robbers took the student’s bus fare then jumped the fence and ran through the thoroughfare,” says Wentzel. She also points out that the width of the thoroughfare is a large part of the problem. “The space isn’t big enough for a car to drive through,” she explains. “So when the police chase criminals with their vans, they have an easy escape route if they are fleeing on foot.” Belthorn resident Gregory Hodges ques-

tions whether removing the thoroughfare will solve the problem. “Some are using it for wrongdoing but I’m more concerned about those who use it for their convenience,” says Hodges. He believes innocent parties should be forewarned about the dangers they face when using the thoroughfare. “I think notices should be placed at both entries of the thoroughfare to warn people that they might be ambushed. It is important for them to know that they are placing their safety, and even health, at risk when using it.” Ward councillor Magadien Davids says “a thoroughfare cannot simply be closed”. “People need access to the thoroughfare

otherwise they’ll have to take a very big detour,” he says. “The matter of closing it would therefore first have to be thoroughly investigated before any decisions can be made.” Davids explains that to his knowledge it is only the school complaining about the thoroughfare and not any residents. “All complaints should be addressed via the civic association which is the mother body of the area. “It is only when we work together that solutions to problems such as these can be found,” he says. Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka, the spokesperson for Lansdowne police, says only one

criminal incident in the thoroughfare has been reported for the year. “A man was robbed at gunpoint while walking through the thoroughfare on his way to work. They took his cellphone,” says Mnyaka. Aware that the thoroughfare is a danger zone, Mnyaka assures that sector vehicles are patrolling the area. He however urges the public to report all criminal activities “no matter how big or small”. “Most people are under the impression that if they are robbed of a R10 or even a R2 that it’s not a big deal but it is because it’s still a crime. Those are still criminal offences and we need to know about it,” he says.

Something for the ladies LAILA MAJIET

AFTER suffering the trauma of cruelty, abused women were treated to a day of pampering on Thursday. The women from the Saartjie Baartman Centre and Sisters Incorporated were treated to manicures and pedicures courtesy of Sh’zen and left the banqueting hall at the Cape Town Civic Centre feeling rejuvenated. With live entertainment by musicians Lana Crowster and blind musician and singer Rodney van Staden, the women were on their feet dancing the afternoon away. Jeronique Petersen (27) from the Saartjie Baartman Centre is a keen netball player and says she thoroughly enjoyed her day of relax-

ation. She says: “The pedicure was very nice. My feet now feel ready for netball.” Petersen says it was nice to have someone pamper her for a change. JP Smith, the Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, and the executive director of Safety and Security, Richard Bosman, were two of the few men present. Yolanda Faro, the Metro Police deputy chief, says the department of Safety and Security is a male-dominant environment and their Women’s Day event usually celebrates the ladies in their unit. She says: “However, this year we wanted to reach out to the less fortunate. Abused women often feel like a burden; today we want to change that.”

Hunt on for shop robbers LAILA MAJIET

THE hunt is on for six suspects wanted for robbery. The armed robbers entered a corner shop in Rondebosch East, robbing the store of cash, cigarettes and cellphones to the total value of R23 000. Zakir’s Corner Shop, which is on the corners of Lansdowne and Denver Roads, was robbed on Tuesday at 19:30. Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka, spokesperson for the Lansdowne Police Station, says: “The suspects also assaulted the owner with a firearm – hitting him in the face – and then fled in a white Toyota Avanza that was parked around the corner.” No shots were fired. A case of business robbery is open. Anyone with the information can contact the Lansdowne detective branch on (021) 700 9000 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. In a separate incident, a 30-year-old woman from Mountview was robbed of R6 000, a BlackBerry and her handbag containing her bank cards cards and drivers’ licence. It is alleged the woman was followed from First National Bank in Vangate Mall and arrived home to find a vehicle with five occupants waiting for her. Police officials say the vehicle was parked in the driveway when the complainant got home. Both the victim and her stepson were held at gunpoint. “One of the men approached her, and requested her money. She proceeded to give

THE donation of blankets will make winter a little more bearable for those living in shacks. People living in the Flamingo Crescent informal settlement in Lansdowne received a heart-warming surprise when volunteers from the Basket of Hope brought them fleecy, double-bed blankets on Wednesday. Children, mostly barefoot, watched their mothers scurry for one of about 20 blankets. When all were handed out, those who received could hardly contain themselves as they removed their blankets from its packaging and wrapped it around themselves. Christina Lakay, manager of the Crawford-based organisation, says it is important to give back to those less fortunate. “We do this every year and it’s humbling to see the appreciation on these people’s faces, says Lakay. Centre’s milestone birthday celebration SUMMER JACOBS

CELEBRATIONS are in store for the month ahead as the Manenberg People’s Centre turns 25 years old. Three major events will be taking place over the next few weeks to celebrate the centre’s birthday. A college open day, a golf day as well as a show by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will provide residents with entertainment. The Manenberg People’s Centre is an organisation which started in 1987. Instrumental in fighting the apartheid regime, the organisation’s meetings were held at the Moravian crèche in Thames Road before they opened their own centre in 1991. Chief Executive Officer, Keith Dumas, says the idea of the Centre was to render support to detainees and their families. “The Centre’s purpose was to enhance the arts such as music, dancing and sculpturing.” He says, however, that the centre is not utilised to its optimal potential. “The Centre, in its current state, is not at its best and we are hoping to resuscitate it,” he says. Appointed only four months ago, Dumas says the Centre is facing financial strain. But he is determined to tackle the issue head-on. Saying that he wants to “brand the Centre”, Dumas believes some of the birthday plans should not be only confined to the building. With this in mind Dumas has planned a golf day. “To raise some much-needed funds we will be hosting a golf day on Friday 7 September. We are hoping to attract more prominent people to come on board and support us,” he says. Keeping in rhythm with the focus on youth development, the Centre has gone into partnership with Cape Town College and will be

Encouraging youth from Manenberg and Gugulethu to join the open day, Dumas says it is important to render support to students. “We are in the process of creating a bridge for students to reach a higher level of education and to aid this we are making scholarships available,” he says. “We will invite the matriculants from three schools in the area including unemployed youth, who have passed Grade 11, to see what opportunities are available to them.” The last celebration will take place on Wednesday 19 September when the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the Edith Stephens Wetland Park on Lansdowne Road. One of the centre’s goals is to harness the might of Manenberg’s many talented musicians and create a youth orchestra. “The idea of the concert is to enhance the building of a youth orchestra so we can inculcate classical music training in the area,” he says. Positive about the future, Dumas says anything can be achieved with hard work. “The Centre has the potential to play a larger role than it currently does in the community. We plan to get it back into full swing,” he vows.

OPINIONS

Tuesday 14 August 2012

Time to pump it up? PRIORITIES: Brent Frans is against public breastfeed ing and feels there is a time and place for everything. “It is not nice for a woman to just take out her breast in public. Do it at home.”

BREASTFEEDING in public – you either think nothing of it or you frown upon this practice.

World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated by hundreds of mothers at Good Hope Centre last week, but the jury is out whether it’s acceptable to feed your infant while out and about. People’s Post’s Luzuko Zini and Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn asked readers what they thought of “public feeding”.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING: EVER YTHING: Margaret Vet man advises mothers to plan before their shopping trips and feed babies at home. “If mothers have a routine feed ing time and plan their shopping trip around that, the baby won’t be hungry or agitated at the mall.”

NATURAL: NATURAL: There is nothing wrong with breastfeed ing in pub lic, says Melissa Lakay, who has herself done so with her own chil dren. “It is natural. I ex perienced it feeding my own chil dren when they were babies.”

A CHEAPER OPTION: Breastfeeding as a good way to save money on bottles and pumps, says Thembisile Mohapi. “It should be al lowed because it is much easi er and not all people have money for ex pensive equip ment.”

ON THE FENCE: Graham Nt shangase can’t de cide either way. “It is a 50/50 thing. If a mother is dealing with a diffi cult child then I guess she has to, as long as it is done in a decent way.”

Thelma’s ’s treasure trove Thelma

Help shelters instead YOUR article “Flamingo ‘here to stay’” (People’s Post, Tuesday 24 July) was, in parts, a disturbing read. While we applaud businessman Shaboodien Roomanay’s initiative to equip the Flamingo Crescent informal settlement dwellers with skills, the Lansdowne Civic Association is worried a settlement created by the City of Cape Town on recreational public open space – without a public participation process – has swelled to between 800 and 1 000 dwellers from a reported 350 dwellers in 2011 and 109 marked for relocation in the internal City Displaced People’s Unit memo dated 3 October 2005. Following the relocation in 2005, City officials undertook to monitor the temporary settlement, while offering skills development programmes to these dwellers. Now a businessman has to provide what the City had promised. Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, the Mayoral Committee Member for housing in the City, had stated in previous articles and correspondence in People’s Post that the City was monitoring the informal settlement. There are also reports of rampant gang activity in the settlement. Surely the site is far to small for all these people. Where do they all sleep – especially the children?

As the City is the custodian of our public open space, what are they doing about this untenable situation? Sonnenberg should be honest and tell us if the City is keeping track of all those occupying the settlement. Does he know if the original 109 relocated are still on the settlement? After mounting witnessed evidence in the form of letters from Lansdowne residents published in Peoples Post’s on 16 August 2011, disproving the DPU internal memo that there was an established squatter camp of 17 structures at Flamingo Crescent public open space, the LCA repeated our call for a forensic investigation (“Probe into Flamingo Crescent”, People’s Post, 12 July 2011). Sonnenberg’s response was that a mere review had been undertaken on the relocation which found that the City was not misled. Yet were affidavits requested from Lansdowne residents and when was this done? Many Lansdowne residents, businesses and religious institutions donate to various homeless shelters, and all displaced people and/ or vagrants are encouraged to make use of these shelters as they have the skills to help. IGBAL HOOSAIN Lansdowne

AFTER reading my letters in People’s Post, Thelma and Brian of Wetton invited me to their home. They were moving and had bags of clothes and furniture they wanted me to distribute to the poorest of the poor. I loaded the goods on my bakkie. When I was finished, Thelma pointed to a plastic bag on the floor. It was a two-litre ice-cream container filled with coins; it was really heavy and I placed it on my bakkie. I informed her I would be back the next day to fetch the furniture. At home I opened the container. It reminded me of the treasure chest stories as there were coins in five cent, 10 cent, 20 cent and 50 cent denominations. My wife, Tina, phoned people at the Freedom Park informal settlement and requested them to send 10 very young children and five women to whom we would hand over Thelma’s gifts. About 10 minutes later, about 25 young children from Freedom Park were calling for me from outside my house. I went to sit under a tree on the

pavement in front of my house, with the children gathered in front of me with expectant expressions on their small faces. I told them a Thelma and Brian from Wetton gave them a present. I opened the ice-cream container and showed them all the coins. It made their eyes sparkle. I prayed that God would bless and protect the children. I placed fistfuls of coins in the front portion of their shirts. The joy and smiles motivated my wife to fetch her container of coins, followed by a neighbour, Patricia, who brought another twolitre ice-cream container filled with coins. There were so many coins that every pocket or clothes space was filled. That was my treasure: the giving with an open hand and the looks of pure joy and excitement. The next day I gave Thelma personal feedback. A look of contentment spread across her face as she said: “I am so glad.” KEITH BLAKE Ottery

Other side of same coin ONE can understand Koert Meyer’s distress about a convicted double murderer, whom he apparently knew, being sentenced to be hanged to death (“Death penalty is no solution”). Did he consider the pain and distress of the relatives and friends of the two murdered people? Questions he and readers can usefully answer around the death penalty are: . Is he aware that since 1990, when the moratorium on the death penalty was introduced, the over 200 000 South Africans who have been murdered would fill the Green Point Stadium more than four times? . Does he think if the courts had the freedom of the option to impose a death sentence, that the number of over 200 000 murders would have been lower?

. Is he aware that a murder accused faces arrest, a right to a bail application, a fair trial with legal representation and the right to cross examine witnesses, the right of appeal to two higher courts and then to the President? The murdered person was given none of these rights and privileges by the person who murdered him or her. . Is he aware that before 1990 less than 5% of the people who were charged with murder actually received a death sentence and only then after the court heard pleadings in mitigation and appeals? . Does he believe that communities would be less likely to administer “bush killings” and take the law into their own hands if they knew that murderous criminals could face a death sentence? FIND OUT AND SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS TOO I can't go on without thanking Dr. Sheik Abdul Kariem for the work he did for me. My friend who had been helped directed me to him, so I met him concerning the voices I was hearing at night and the witchcraft that was possessing my whole family. Keeping mum on table tennis coach LIAM MOSES

THE fate of a national table tennis coach – suspended for bringing the code “into disrepute” – will be decided today. Former WP, Boland and national coach Greg Naik has hired a lawyer to help him overturn a two-year ban which, he says, was illegal and goes against the WP Table Tennis constitution. The Western Province Sport Council and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport have been forced to step into fray. The two provincial bodies will meet with Naik and Kelvin Smith, acting chairperson of WP Table Tennis, to make a final decision on Naik’s suspension today. Naik, also the chairperson and founder of Boundary Table Tennis Club, in Bonteheuwel, was suspended last month after WP Table Tennis brought charges against him. However, Naik claims the charges are unsubstantiated and the hearings were unconstitutional. “The WP people have always been on my case saying I have a strange manner of running my club, but the results are coming in,” says Naik. “Every year I can show we have a new SA player from the club. They have been trying to get rid of me for years.” Naik further claims the association has not supported Boundary Table Tennis, despite the club having produced several top provincial and national players. He also questioned the manner in which financial resources were distributed. “Every year there is development money coming to the province, but not a cent comes to this club. Yet we produce the results,” says

Naik. He adds the Lotto gave about “R700 000 for equipment” including 70 tables, bags and ball machines which were distributed among the clubs. “When the equipment came they gave us only four tables.” He says other clubs which have failed to produce quality players have received much more. Theo Cogill, Luke Abrahams, Alisha van Rooyen and Jade Sasman are just some of the top players who started at Boundary Table Tennis Club. All four have been in the top three places of the South African table tennis rankings, and Sasman and Cogill also won bronze medals at the African Championships. Naik suspects his suspension is due to late paying of competition entry fees for Boundary’s players, but adds this is not a valid reason. WP Table Tennis, however, remained tight-lipped about Naik’s suspension ahead of the meeting. Hasie Ismail, a WP Table Tennis executive committee member and chairperson of the Livingston-Kenilworth Table Tennis Club, confirmed the suspension, but refused to comment on any of Naik’s claims. “He was found guilty by an independent disciplinary tribunal of bringing table tennis into disrepute,” says Ismail. “The general meeting imposed a sentence of a two-year suspension, with the added factor that if he transgressed within those two years, a further two years will be added. And if he transgresses a second time he will be suspended for life.” Speaking to People’s Post Smith confirm the meeting, but would not elaborate on the details.

Tons of triple-20s at PDA LIAM MOSES

ONE of the oldest and largest darts organisations in Cape Town will celebrate its 21st birthday this month. The Peninsula Darts Association (PDA) was established after the amalgamation of the Protea, Metropolitan and Cape Peninsula darts unions in 1991. Since formation it has grown into one of the strongest darts organisations in South Africa and has 17 member clubs and over 300 players participating twice a week. According to PDA chairperson Azzraf Isaacs, the organisation’s strength comes from its close connection with its surrounding areas. “There is a very close connection with the community and most of the clubs are from the community,” says Isaacs. “(The clubs are) from Lavender Hill, Steenberg, Cafda Village, Grassy Park and Mitchell’s Plain. All the clubs are very near to where we play.” PDA was founded in Grassy Park, moving to several locations around Cape Town before finding a permanent home at the Rooikrans Sports Complex. The organisation is one of 10 districts affiliated to the Western Province Darts Board of Control and Darts SA, and was named District of the Year in 2011. Isaacs, the association chairperson

since 2007, says it’s rare for a darts district to show the longevity and strength that PDA has shown. “Our players work very hard. I’m not only talking about the officials – the clubs work very hard. For us it’s a milestone to reach 21 years. It’s not everyday you here of a darts district reaching 21 years.” PDA has produced four WP players and three SA players in its history. In 2007 the PDA men’s team won the SA Nationals at the Goodhope Centre and Jason Erasmus won the SA singles championship, while the women’s side won the Women’s National Championships in Mitchell’s Plain in 2010. PDA is also in involved in charitable work and has raised over R100 000 for HIV/Aids charities through its annual HIV/Aids Awareness Darts Competition over the last eight years. The organisation has also started a darts development programme involving four schools in Retreat, Steenberg and Lavender Hill. “Every month we have a development programme, where we get the kids from primary and high schools to come here. We give them a set of darts and food, then we see if we can develop their talents,” says Isaacs. PDA will be hosting its 21st anniversary dinner at the Grassy Civic Centre on Saturday 22 September. For more information on the association call Isaacs 0 083 763 4959.

It’s Engen Knockout time!

LIAM MOSES

CAPE TOWN’S most anticipated youth football tournament, the Engen Knockout Challenge, kicks-off this weekend. The tournament, now in its ninth year, will see under-17 teams across the metropole face off for the highly-coveted trophy and a hefty cash prize. Tournament director Gilbert Kruger says the tourney, of which People’s Post is the media sponsor, was originally started by Santos FC and Engen, after the realisation that there were no under-17 tournaments. Although the local football landscape has now changed, and new youth tournaments

seem to start each year, Kruger says the Challenge still plays a major role in developing young players because of its professional setup. “This tournament is organised and played on professional level. It’s played on a level that these players don’t get to play at every week,” says Kruger. “It gives them a tremendous boost just because of the way the tournament is organised, with the professional Premier Soccer League (PSL) referees taking part. “Here is an under-17 player and he is being treated as a professional; we obviously want to start grooming them to show them what it is like when they move into professional ranks.”

DART MOTORS

This weekend, teams from across Cape Town will get their first taste of that professional atmosphere when they battle their way through the playoffs and for one of the 16 spots available in the final round. The opening rounds of the tournament will take place at various venues across the Peninsula, while the finals will be played at the Stephen Reagan Sports Complex in Westridge, Mitchell’s Plain from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 September. With prize money of R10 000 and tons of prizes up for grabs, the competition should be tough. “It’s the only tournament where you play and every team either wins money or they win training equipment for their club,” says

Kruger. “It’s also the only tournament where the team that plays in the final and the team that finished last play the same amount of games. Each team plays ten games.” Last year, the Ajax Cape Town under-17 side were crowned champions, after they defeated 2010 champions ASD Academy from Claremont 2-1 in the final. The third-placed side was Old Mutual Academy and Kensington United finished fourth. The Engen Knockout also takes a place in Bloemfontein, Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, and in 2011 those tournaments were won by Harmony Academy, Cherrians FC, Orlando Pirates FC and Buffalo City Soccer School respectively.
