TOUGH SLOG: Zoe Holbrow cheers cyclists on at the start of the Chapman’s Peak leg of the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, where scorching heat took its toll. Cyclist Barry du Plooy writes: “Every shady spot on Chappies had people sitting, standing or lying, and some were sprawled in the gutter. I decided that we felt so bad from intense heat and dehydration that it would be wise to drift down to Hout Bay and arrange to be collected.” Photo: Teresa Fischer

Local vagrancy ‘not major’ enough MELISSA LE ROUX

D

ESPITE Lansdowne being known as the hub of vagrancy, it was not included in the eight areas the City of Cape Town will be building assessment centres for homeless people. The centres would provide 24hour assistance for 20 people. The chairperson of the Lansdowne Civic Association, Igbal Hoosain, says there are many homeless people wandering around Lansdowne and it has become a big problem. The reason for Lansdowne being omitted from the City’s new assessment centres could be that the area does have a homeless shelter in which homeless people can vacate,

according to Hoosain. “There is the Owl Haven Shelter in Lansdowne as well as the Flamingo Crescent informal settlement where hundreds of people are staying. “These two establishments have been in existence for years now, and is probably the reason why we were not included in the eight areas.” However true this may be, Mitchell’s Plain, Athlone and Cape Town CBD, also has existing homeless shelters, but are still included in the eight areas that will be receiving assessment centres. The Mayco member for social and early childhood development, Councillor Beverly Cortjie-Alcock, says when the City planned which areas would get the assessment centres, it was looked at “holistically”. The assessment centres will pro-

vide those who are referred to the centre or those who come on a voluntary basis with a place to sleep, a bathroom and a spacious kitchen. “They will be assessed both mentally and physically so that the necessary rehabilitation can be provided. We looked at the major complaints coming in from the residents, and made the decision from there. We know that Lansdowne does have a lot of vagrants, but so do a lot of other areas in Cape Town. We cannot open up an assessment centre in all areas and in all wards because that would run into the 100s and we just don’t have the funds for that,” she says. An irate chairperson of the Kenwyn Residents’ Association, Mark Kleinschmidt, says he is grossly exasperated that Lansdowne has not been earmarked for an assessment

centre. “If there are no centres for the vagrants in Lansdowne, they are forced into anti-social behaviour. They would have to come knocking and begging by people’s doors, and this will increase criminal activity in the area. People are forced to resort to alternative ways to find a means to survive,” he says. People’s Post visited an area of Lansdowne where a group of vagrants reside on the side of the road, opposite the railway station. Enoch Hermanus who has been living on the same spot for two years, says that there is a piece of vacant land next to a parking lot where the City can build an assessment centre for them too. “All of us stay outside. During the winter, it’s

the worst. I have gone to a shelter before; I stayed there for about two months. “But it would be nice to go again. We can’t always go because there’s never enough space,” he says. Another vagrant, Carol Downs, who came all the way from the Eastern Cape to find work, says the people of Lansdowne also need a place of shelter. “There are a lot of homeless people around here, and you can never have enough shelter. We sit and sleep outside here and it would be nice to have a roof over our heads too,” she says.

Acknowledging Hanover Park’s heroes Nominations open for first local Community Service Awards DO you know of someone doing great things towards the improvement of Hanover Park? Give them the ultimate recognition by nominating them for the first Community Service Awards. Dynamic and unselfish locals stand in line to be awarded this accolade in acknowledgement of the positive change

they have brought to the area – and they need you to nominate them. Awards co-ordinator Rieduwaan Anthony says the aim is to motivate and praise the unsung heroes who spend their time and money on making local streets better. “The primary objective is to thank these community leaders for their hard work. The fact that they will be nominated by

their neighbours and peers makes it much more special, as it’s confirmation that their efforts are not going unnoticed,” he says. Residents can nominate people doing noteworthy work by completing a form which can be collected at the library and dropped into the specially marked box by Friday 16 March.

Prostitutes find new trading area N

OW that Joanne Road in Lansdowne has been cleared of prostitutes, the “working” girls have taken their “business” to liquor outlets and nightclubs . Since last year’s festive season, an increased number of prostitutes were noted in Joanne Road, causing great concern among residents, (Joanne Road a ‘red light district’, People’s Post, 24 January) This, however, has come to a halt after the inception of the “Taking Back Our Streets – Lansdowne Against Prostitution” campaign in February. A group of 30 or so residents took to the streets of Lansdowne on nightly patrols and urged prostitutes to leave. The group went from door-to-door requesting residents to take one hour out of their night and sit outside to help the group combat prostitution. “Joanne Road was a central point for prostitutes to operate from, but since we have been doing our nightly patrols, the prostitutes have dispersed to other areas,” says the spokesperson for the

campaign, Ashraf Kenny. Although the sex workers have been driven out of Joanne Road by the campaign members, they have resorted to meeting clients at liquor outlets and nightclubs in the area. “We’ve managed to get the prostitutes out of our roads, but we want the problem to go away completely,” says Kenny. He added some prostitutes have resorted to using a church’ premises in Walnut Road to do business. “We have approached the priest about the issue and he said that they will increase visibility in the area as it is quite dark. “This essentially helped us gain more members because now the problem really needs to be put under control,” says Kenny. Ward councillor Anthea Green says the Vice Squad is presently working on a strategy to tackle different areas. “On Saturday they started patrolling in hot spots such as Claremont, Wynberg and Lansdowne to get these women from trading on the streets,” she says. Green adds that she would like to get involved with the campaign that residents have started. “It would be nice if the group contacted me because I have no idea who they are. We can liaise and work on something together to come up with a longterm solution.”

ANSDOWNE band, Urban Fuze, is an up-and-coming group taking the Cape Town music scene by storm. The multi-genred band consists of eight fresh-faced youths, all in their late teens and early 20s.

The band was formed late last year and in this short amount of time, has had successful performances around Cape Town at venues such as the Black Pearl in Lansdowne and Westend in Rylands. They’re all members of the Our Lady Help of Christians in Lansdowne’s band. “One day, two of our band members suggested the youth within the church band start a band of their own and that’s how Urban Fuze began,” says 21-year-old Kim Petersen, one of four singers in the band. Referring to themselves as a democracy, the band has no manager because they cannot afford one. Rehearsals take place at one

of the band members’ homes as the majority live within walking distance from one another. “We take whatever gig we can get. So when one of the band members organise something, we go for it,” says 20-year-old violinist Liam Roman. The positive and energetic vibes from group members such as Roman reverberate in the sounds of Urban Fuze while they perform on stage. “We play everything from jazz to R&B, modern house and old school. We also add South African music to our playlist to support local talent, by performing songs from groups such as Liquid Deep,” says Roman, giving a short rendition of Liquid Deep’s “Still”. Catch Urban Fuze at a fundraiser, which includes disco and karaoke at the Savio Hall in Lansdowne Road, on Friday 30 March at 20:00. Entry fee is R50 per person; bring your own XYZ and refreshments.

Teen in court over toddler’s shooting

Man killed at soccer match

MELISSA LE ROUX

A

N 18-year-old man appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with the shooting of a three-year-old boy.

A 22-YEAR-OLD man was shot in the face while watching a soccer match on Sunday at the sportsfield in Lynne Road, Manenberg. Manenberg SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett said that according to witnesses, a shot was heard, the victim fell to the ground and died at the scene. The suspect was chased down the road and as he ran he fired another shot, which hit another 22-year-old who lives in the area. This man had heard all the commotion and peered over a wall to try and see what had happened. He was hit in the head and taken to hospital, where he has been declared brain dead. He is currently hooked up to a machine and is in a critical condition. A case of murder was opened and is being investigated. Anyone with information can contact Detective Constable Jeffrey Witbooi on 073 049 4450, Manenberg SAPS on (021) 699 9400 or Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.

The incident occurred on Wednesday 7 March at a house in Rhone Walk, Manenberg, at about 10:30. Earlier that morning, the Manenberg SAPS conducted a search at the suspect’s house looking for illegal firearms and ammunition. Nothing was found and the police officers left. After the search, the suspect allegedly accused the mother of the three-year-old of being responsible for the police search. An argument broke out between and the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and fired a shot at the little boy, who was sitting on the bed, according to the

Should evolution be taught at school? HE controversial issue of evolution has seen Christians and scientists butting heads ever since Charles Darwin and others came about with their theories about the ori-

affect children’s rights to understand various theories about the origin of man? People’s Post took to the streets to find out what people thought. Should children be taught according to fact or faith?

IT’S ABOUT ATTITUDE: “I’ve done extensive reading on the evolution of man. I find it very fascinating and I think it should be taught in schools. I’m sure with the right attitude from teachers, the subject could be a pleasant and exciting experience for the children,” says Chanel Smith from Rondebosch.

NO BIG DEAL: “I would’ve liked to be taught about evolution when I was at school. I don’t think children’s rights are really affected if they are not taught about it – that’s a bit dramatic. We don’t need something to be part of the cur riculum to learn about it,” says Susan Van Niekerk from Plumstead.

STATE OF MIND: “I think it depends on how old the children are when they are taught about the different theories regarding the ori gin of man. In every household children are taught what to believe in, so teaching some thing new might be difficult if they are not open to it,” says Sherman Carolus from Athlone.

DUBIOUS: “I don’t think it should be part of the curriculum. I don’t see the point. How will it benefit my child’s future? Maybe if I had more clarity on that, I might have a change of heart,” says Mandy Olifant from Belgravia.

GOOD IDEA: “I think it would be a good idea for children to learn about evolution but I don’t think it should be compulsory. Perhaps it can be given as an optional course,” says Ronald Murray from Athlone.

EDUCATIONAL: “If it serves to broaden my child’s educational skills, then I don’t see why not. Just as long as she does not absorb it into her daily life,” says Sharky Cassiem from Ot tery.

Help save energy

ESKOM contractors are replacing energy hungry incandescent light bulbs with energy saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in thousands of homes across the greater Cape Town area. The roll-out, which began in October last year and will continue until the end of March, will see hundreds of old light bulbs being swapped for new CFLs that save energy – for free. Homeowners are invited to go to the following CFL exchange points between 10:00 and 17:00, Monday to Saturday, to make the swap for new CFLs: . Maynard Mall in Wynberg . Dispose of old CFLs in a safe, responsible manner – place them in a non-breakable container or plastic bag when bringing them to one of the listed exchange points for replacement. Gangster museum taking shape Facility showcasing the history of gang culture to open in June MELISSA LE ROUX

IF a group of graduates from the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development have their way, the city could soon have its own gangster museum. Modelled after the museum in Chicago, America, this gangster museum would be the first to be established in Africa. In an effort to educate the people of Cape Town about Western Cape gangsters, the

YMCA needs volunteers ATHLONE YMCA is looking for passionate, positive and energetic volunteers to assist within the youth department; helping with homework, activities, outings and camps. Volunteers should be between the age of 19 and 25. Anyone who has experience in working with children and would love to be exposed to more youth work, is welcome to join. Training will be available and the closing date for applications is Thursday 22 March. For more information contact Aneesa on (021) 637 5150.

museum hopes to shed light on the history of gangsterism, and to essentially change people’s perspectives on the gangs. “We were sifting through business ideas when we came across the fact that there aren’t any gangster museums in Africa. Gangs form a big part of Cape Town’s history and they have been in existence for centuries,” says one of the project managers, Siyabulela Daweti. This museum will not only educate people on how gangsterism came to be, but will also provide museum goers with an intricate

look into the life of a gangster. The proposed name for the museum is “18 Gangster”, and is set to open in June. “There are still a couple of kinks to iron out in the planning and we are still working on our research into gangsterism in the Western Cape, but we are hoping that the museum can be started in June,” says Daweti. In order for the museum to be up and running, the group requests help from the community to gather any sort of gangster memorabilia.

“We are looking for old gangster-type clothing, structures, statues, a body of the BMW car that gangsters used back in the day, along with crime reports and documentation. Anything would help,” adds Daweti. If anyone has anything to contribute, contact Siyabulela Daweti on 073 707 3639 or email Capetownfhittours@hotmail.com.

Dark day

IT is dismal indeed when organisations such as Loaves and Fishes face closure, due to lack of funds. Sustainability is the name of the game; whether you run a business, NGO or school. Without sufficient funding or capital, no organisation can survive. Given the current economic climate, that has seen numerous businesses close shop, and countless individuals lose their homes or find themselves under debt review, the uphill battle for survival facing NGOs is even more insurmountable. For 15 years, Loaves and Fishes in Observatory has provided a safe haven for homeless people and those addicted to substances. Through its renewal programme, it has helped to turn around many lives, but now dwindling funds may force it to close its doors by the end of this month. Should this happen, its 23 residents may well find themselves back on the streets, facing a scary, uncertain future. It was after all, the lack of family structure that had led them to life on the streets and apparent self-destruction. Without the existence and intervention of shelters, homes and safe havens, many would be doomed. For the residents of Loaves and Fishes, this is the only home they know, the only family they have, the only kindness they have experienced, the only hope that burns for them. There is no limit to what constitutes help. Every contribution is important. While money is a priority, the organisation also needs volunteers. Onus is on society to do everything in its power to help, especially since the extent of social ills is well documented and common knowledge. Stop looking at others to step up to the plate and help. People hold the power to change circumstance and when united for a common cause, the power multiplies infinitely. Begin by looking inward for the solution.

Your SMSes Your voice must be heard LAST week Thursday, as I was handing out soup and bread at Freedom Park Informal Settlement, I noticed a very young boy coughing badly and I prayed for him. Only when I enquired about his parents was I told the mother had left with the baby two months ago for a place called Hanover. The sister, called Barbie, at the age of nine is left to feed, clean and look after the sick boy as well as his younger brother. The father leaves early in the morning to work and arrives home late at night. The mother is receiving the total child grant but is spending it in Hanover. I decided to report the incident to the Mayor’s office for attention. After sending my report I heard on the radio a social worker stating that she and others have over one hundred case loads and they are growing increasingly despondent. To make matters worse there is a shortage of social workers. Social services cannot say the boat has insufficient sailors on board. They have to

keep this vital shipping lane open and working. This kind of statement and log report will encourage child abuse and neglect because abusers are aware of the insufficient policing by social services. We cannot throw our hands up and blame the recession, unemployment or poverty. What happens to Barbie and her situation? Will I get the urgent investigation I requested or are we going to leave her alone on that stormy sea she never asked to sail on. We have to get our act together. Never say it will, or cannot happen to me, my children or grandchildren, as the tide can change for each one of us regardless of our social status. Your voice must be heard to get the ball rolling, your code of silence must become a roar. We must stand together and act together as that rainbow child that was born in 1994. This letter is my contribution to Barbie. I want her to know I tried and hope to show her I did. KEITH ALFRED ADOLPH BLAKE Ottery

Heartfelt thanks for the support WE, the Big Walk Executive Committee, hereby wish to sincerely thank People’s Post for the resounding success of our 10km Big Walk on Sunday 4 March. We also have great pleasure in expressing our appreciation and gratitude to you for your generous sponsorship as a media partner for the event. Your sponsorship most certainly went a long way towards sustaining this mega social sporting event. It has been an absolute pleasure and privi-

lege to have worked with esteemed personalities like yourself and others in your team, on this project. It is my fervent wish that you and your family be the recipients of multitudes of good duah’s from the beneficiaries and may Almighty Allah in his infinite mercy bestow them all on you, Insha Allah. DR ELIAS PARKER Events and Sponsorship Director Big Walk Executive Committee

Local thoughts . To Adeelah Ederies: I hope your bank is going to refund the money that was withdrawn out of your account. The same thing happened to my daughter last Friday. She got an SMS on her phone while at work at the Waterfront that R1 000 has been withdrawn from her account at Plein Square in Town. She went to her bank (Standard Bank) on Saturday to sort it out and they told her that the money will be refunded. I hope that the same applies in your case – it’s not R2.50 that they’ve taken from you. ND, Kenwyn . To Kamalie of Hanover Park: There may be unwed parents but there is no such thing as illegitimate children. God has a purpose for every child who enters this world. Furthermore, our constitution protects their every right. Mind your language and learn to love and respect regardless of a child’s supposed status. Felicity, Newfields . I am a volunteer at a school in Hanover Park and I am a parent. We like to go to school when our children complain about their teachers but can anybody tell me who helps the teacher when the children abuse the teacher? Boy, do they get abuse on

a daily basis. As a volunteer, I get the same abuse. We as parents need to help our teachers and stop covering up for our rude and misbehaved children. Concerned parent . I lost my driver’s licence at Kenilworth Centre. Could whoever found it please contact me at 078 630 1767? . Mario Wanza should stick with what he started and leave housing to the City Council. Eddie, Manenberg By the way . I am amazed by people who complain about street name changes, forgetting that 99% are their forefathers. It’s time to remember our African heroes and heroines. . Why not name Jan Smuts Drive, Helen Zille Drive? ExANC . What a disaster Chappies is. A beautiful mountain is being converted to concrete. We don’t need tollgates or buildings, all we need are plants. This is such a simple solution. Plants keep the soil together to prevent rockfalls and is an environmentally sound solution. It seems like some politician got paid a fat sum to approve this construction. Vegetation is all that is necessary. Start planting shrubs, trees and fynbos to keep the soil together and prevent the boulders from fall-

ing. Rocky . Patricia De Lille doesn’t have to drive or walk in the poorer suburbs. She knows the conditions of our areas. Her councillors are doing nothing. They just have to attend their three or four compulsory meetings, that’s all. So go out and vote for them again. Resident . The more you vote ANC, the poorer you become. From Ex-ANC member . In order for people to qualify for AllPay, they should first go for a drug test. They abuse the poor innocent children’s money. Kamalie, Hanover Park . Taxi driver Jacob Humphreys got 20 years for killing and injuring passengers in a moment of misjudgement by a poorly educated man. But when well educated politicians short staff the traffic police by about 80% – well knowing this contributes to thousands of deaths each year – no one is charged. Just a thought . Can the young lady I gave a lift to Town please contact me on 078 781 2299? You left your parcel in my car. . Why must we pay so much for petrol when other countries make war? South Africa has enough money to see to our needs.

Teachers were asked to choose 50 children who they thought needed the experience. “Those who were chosen are at risk of turning to a life of crime and substance abuse as they are children with violent behaviour and have a poor attendance record at school. “Although we were not allowed to see the cells, prison warders talked to the children about what was happening inside and even showed them the weapons recovered from cells. A documentary on prison life was shown and an inmate of 11 years gave his testimony to the kids,” says Mnyaka. Mnyaka has faith that the documentary will help students to realise that no one can beat the system. One of the pupils who attended the visit said: “You see a different side of life in there. It is so easy to get killed in the cells. I don’t want to end up in a place like that.”

N an effort to give children at risk a reality check, teachers from Oaklands High School, in partnership with the Social Crimes Unit, organised a visit to Pollsmoor Prison to expose them to the ugly truth of what is happening behind bars. On Thursday 1 March, a bus filled with students visited the prison. Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka, communications officer from the Social Crimes Unit, explains that Oaklands High is one of the schools in the area where help is needed with problematic students. “Oaklands was one of the schools we identified as problematic in terms of the behaviour of the children. “Some of them are aggressive, even toward the teachers,” says Mnyaka.

Young sprinter speeds to the top LIAM MOSES

I

T’S the adrenaline rush that Yusuf Ismail loves about sprinting – the feeling he gets while crouched at the starting line, flanked by his competitors, waiting for the starting gun to fire. This 18-year-old Wynberg Boys High School student, has been taking part in athletics since he was in primary school, and his love for the sport has caused him to pursue it with immense and unwavering dedication. Ismail’s passion for the sport is as clear as daylight – his eyes widen and a smile grows across his face at the mere mention of sprinting or athletics. “It’s the thrill, the excitement. The nerves when you’re standing on the line, when you go on your mark. It’s intense but exciting. I don’t know how to describe it. “I’ve been running since primary school and nothing has changed. It’s the same feeling. That’s what I like.” Ismail spends most of his free time either training for or competing in sprint events, and his passion, dedication and desire to succeed has seen him make steady gains. In 2011 he was part of the Western Cape team which competed at the national games in Polok-

wane, and he returned home with a silver medal for the 200 metre sprint event. However, athletics was not always his favourite sport and it was not the first sport that he achieved provincial recognition in. It was cricket that earned Ismail a scholarship to Wynberg Boys, and in 2007 he was selected to the Western Province squad for a national age-group cricket tournament. The young sprinter said that he grew bored with cricket and he has since dropped the game completely to concentrate on his first love. “I’m stronger at cricket than I am at Athletics, because I used to struggle to make the Province team in athletics, whereas in cricket I was really good. “Athletics practice is fun. The people I train with make it fun. The race itself gives you that nervous feeling. I like running. I’d rather stick to what I love than what I’m good at.” Ismail added that during his last days of playing cricket, what he enjoyed most was being able to run after balls when fielding. This Pelican Heights (near Pelican Park) resident says that his primary short term goal is to make it into the South African athletics squad, and that he hopes to represent South Africa at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ryan Rasool knockout kicks off LIAM MOSES

H

IGH SCHOOL football teams from across Cape Town converged on Westridge High School on Saturday for the first leg of the annual Ryan Rasool knockout tournament. The competition brought together teams from as far afield as Atlantis and Stellenbosch, and produced several interesting contests between sides from different socioeconomic conditions. Most of the games in the competi-

tion were fairly even, with teams either drawing or winning by one or two goals, but some games saw teams well and truly put to the sword. The day’s action kicked off with three clashes between local Mitchell’s Plain rivals, and, in the first game, Lenteguer were on the receiving end of a 4-0 drubbing from Beacon Valley side Oval North. Cape Town school Harold Cressy were the next team to suffer badly at the at the hands of their opponents. They lost 4-0 to Robinvale High from Atlantis in their first game.

Islamia College won their first match of the day 3-1 against Buren High from Brooklyn, but they went on to concede the highest number of goals in any of the games, in their second match. Cloetesville High, of Stellenbosch, beat the Lansdowne side 6-0. The next phase of the competition takes place on Saturday 17 March, at the same location, where the teams will play the final two matches of the group stage before progressing to the knock-out stage of the Cup.
