Bullets fly in Manenberg
PEOPLE have resorted to cooping themselves up in their homes after another flare of gang violence in Manenberg. Extra resources such as manpower and police vehicles have been deployed to the streets specifically between Thames and Manenberg avenues, where most of the bullets have been flying in the last three weeks. Despite peace talks taking place between the two warring gangs, sporadic shooting incidents continue. It is understood the Dixie Boys and Hard Livings are engulfed in a bloody turf war which has left numerous gang members injured. No bystanders have been hit – yet. Riana Norman says her children have not played outside since the shots started ringing out last month. “They don’t understand that their young lives are in danger,” the mother of two says. “It is terrifying to hear the shots being fired. After all the years of living here, those loud bangs still send shivers down my spine.” Her brother was shot seven years ago, leaving him paralysed from the waist down. “He wasn’t a skollie, but was in the wrong place at the wrong time. One day he was able to look after himself, the next he was forced to go and live with family members who are able to look after him. This battle is not just between the gangs – innocent people can easily be caught in the crossfire.” Reginald Ruiters’ daughter hasn’t been in school for a full week since the shootings started. “She is too scared to go outside. About two weeks ago she was on her way to visit her cousin in Heideveld and while waiting for a taxi in Die Laan, shots rang out nearby. She wet herself right there on the street. Luckily a woman grabbed her and pulled her into her house. She is still traumatised about it,” he says. It is “ridiculous and sad” that witnesses choose to turn a blind eye, Ruiters seethes. “Everyone on the street knows more than the cops do. They have lots to say while skinnering at their gates, but when the police ask for information, their mouths remain shut. They are part of the problem in this area. They stand by like spectators and watch people fall like flies.” Manenberg police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett says extra resources have

been deployed to the precinct. “Patrols have been stepped up to deal with the recent shootings,” he says. “This is a reactive measure, but we are doing all we can to restore order and calm in the community.” He agrees that without residents speaking out against the bloodshed, policing the problem is “10 times harder”. “We need people with information to
share the details with us. Getting the situation under control involves a partnership between the officers and the man on the street. There is always someone who sees or knows something. You don’t have to tell us who you are; all we need is that tip-off to help us bring the suspects to book.” Community leader Ruth Pearson says parents know who the culprits are, but choose
to turn a blind eye. “If you do this, you have blood on your hands. You are the cause of another mother’s tears. Things have just started to turn around in Manenberg – don’t be the reason why we sink back into hiding out in our homes again.” V Phone the station on 0 (021) 699 9400 or Crime Stop on 0 08600 10111.

MESS up and you’re out. This was the warning issued by JP Smith, the Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, to the new Metro Police graduates. the licenced premises may be sold from Monday to Saturday from 09:00 until 18:00. No liquor may be sold on a Sunday, with wineries – to trade from tasting rooms – being the only exception. The recommendation from Council proposes that the off-consumption sale of liquor be permitted on application in certain location categories, excluding local business and residential areas. It would enable licensees in these categories to apply for the extension of trading hours, as well as the extension of trading days. It also suggests that enforcement of the bylaw relating to trading on Sundays by current licence holders be suspended until the amendment is considered by Council.
THERE may be some good news for offconsumption liquor trading outlets across the Peninsula. The City of Cape Town’s full council put in a motion for the Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning portfolio committee to consider and initiate an amendment to the relevant sections of the Liquor Trading Days and Hours Bylaw on Wednesday. The proposed re-visit of the bylaw will specifically relate to the implementation of revised trading hours and the prohibition of trading at licensed premises for consumption off-site – shops and bottle stores – on Sundays. The bylaw, which was set to be implemented yesterday (Monday 1 April) currently states liquor for consumption off

MORE than a dozen double-cab bakkies have been stolen in the Lansdowne precinct since January and none have yet been recovered. Police are now advising locals to ensure they properly secure their vehicles and refrain from leaving them parked on the street. Captain Allen Manuel, the operations commander for Lansdowne police, says most of the vehicle thefts took place at night. “We suspect the perpetrators might be scouting the vehicles during the day and returning at night to steal it,” he says. It’s “highly likely” that these vehicles are being taken to chop shops and sold for its parts or are being smuggled out of the country. “The Isuzu model is specifically being targeted. More recently, Dyna trucks are now on these car thieves’ radar,” he says. Manuel advises locals to rather park their vehicles in their garages or behind their homes. “Additionally, keep an eye out for vehicles driving around aimlessly as they could be eying which vehicles to steal next,” he says. The percentage increases on Step 2 of the Domestic Full category exceeds the standard increase due to the reduction in the subsidy level on this step necessitated by the usage patterns and water demand strategy. The next phase to increase the number of steps of the Domestic Cluster category has been taken to further align it with the Domestic Full category as requested by customers during the 2012/13 consultation process. Changes to Miscellaneous tariffs, including the increases to treated effluent (specifically golf courses), industrial effluent and hydrant standpipes are specified in Annexure 4 of the budget document.

Generic medication a cheaper buy
HAS your pharmacist ever suggested you use a generic substitution of a medication? Were you hesitant to accept this suggestion for fear of ineffectiveness? This need not be the case, according to Fedhealth principal officer Peter Jordan, who says the generic version of medication is “bioequivalent” to the original product. “It is also far more affordable for many South Africans and should be considered and recommended, where appropriate,” he says. Generic drugs may cost up to 30% less than its equivalent and offers the same safety and efficacy. “The Medicines Control Council (MCC) requires that a generic drug deliver the same amount of the same active ingredient into the bloodstream at the same rate and they’re very strict about this requirement,” Jordan says. It is cheaper because it does not require the same investment cost for the research and development of a new drug. New medi-
cation is developed under patent protection, which protects the investment and gives the developing company the sole right to sell the drug while the patent is in effect. This allows the company to recoup the invested funds. A patent protection expires after 15 years and generic manufacturers can then produce a generic equivalent product to sell at a lower cost and under a different trade name. Both the branded and generic drug must meet the same standards of good manufacturing practice. The MCC prohibits manufacturing of drugs in sub-standard facilities and biannual MCC inspections are conducted to ensure standards. “Generic firms have facilities comparable to those of brand-name firms. Generic drugs could be made by the same company making the brand-name drug, because brand-name firms are responsible for manufacturing a high percentage of generic
drugs,” Jordan says. The fierce competition in the generics market is advantageous for South Africans, as stronger competition leads to more competitive prices. But South Africa is still ranked low in terms of generic usage compared to other countries in America and Europe. However, Jordan believes generics will be more recognised as sound alternatives to innovator products should medical professionals prescribe it with more confidence. “ The Medicines and Related Substances Act of 1965 allows pharmacists to inform the public of the benefits of generics. Doctors will start prescribing generics more readily in the future, too. Where there are requests from patients for generic alternatives, medical profession-
als will have to accede to such requests,” he says. Generic medication will also mean medical scheme members will get more mileage out of their day-to-day benefits – especially for chronic medication.
Keep it original or go cheaper? WITH doctors prescribing different medication to their patients, at some point patients are faced with the possibility of choosing between branded medication and a generic medication. People’s Post took to the streets to find out from the readers if they would use the cheaper alternative.
FOURIE: She says it depends on your CHANELLE FOURIE: body. She adds tablets have different effects on people and using generics is a personal choice. “If something works more effectively for you then use it. Some people might be allergic to certain medications which will also affect their choice.”
WILLIAM BREDE BREDEVELDT: VELDT: He thinks original is always better. When it comes to medication you want fast relief, he explains. “Original medication works faster and is stronger than generics. Even though generics are cheaper you will sacrifice price for relief if you want to feel better.”
VAN BORSTEL: HEINRICH VAN BORSTEL: He says he would not use generics because he already prefers not to use original medication. “I personally prefer to use herbal remedies instead of something that is cooked up in a lab. I think anything that is mass produced can have faults.”
MAILSA SIW SIWAPHEWE: APHEWE: He feels there is no difference between original and generic medication. The only difference is the price. “Both serve the same function and will bring you relief. Some people can’t afford the original so they have to use generics.”
GAIL LLODEWYK: ODEWYK: She says she puts her trust in the professionals and will use any medication the doctor prescribes. “I have no problem with using generic medication because I trust the doctors would only prescribe something that will be good for me.”
PAUL DAVIE DAVIES: S: He says it depends on the complexity of the illness. “If you are treated for one illness it’s fine to use generic medication, but if you are being treated for multiple illnesses the generic medication may have bad side effects when mixed with other medication.”
DUNN: She says she doesn’t have a THERESA DUNN: problem with generic medication because it has the same ingredients as the original medication. “It is also cheaper and that means plenty people can afford it. That would make good medication accessible to the majority of people.”

players (disliked) the coaches and the executive board members, because of certain decision they made,” says Ariefdien. “But no matter who the coach is or who the executive board members are, the players’ job is just to play rugby and make a success of it. Last year we had one coach for most of the year. The forward coach was fired. That was one of the reasons we didn’t function at our best.” Ariefdien would not divulge what turned the players against the coaching staff and club leadership. Several changes have been implemented at the club during Ariefdien’s short tenure, including the appointment of three other
COLLEGIANS RFC have their sights set on bouncing straight back to the Super League B. This will be achieved after problems, which led to its relegation to the Premier League A last season, have been dealt with. The Mitchell’s Plain club finished third from bottom last year after losing 11, drawing two and winning just five of their games. Armien Ariefdien, a former player who was appointed as head coach in January, says the club has since identified two major problems as the cause of the relegation. “They made one big mistake when the
coaches, the creation of a forum for the players to express their views and weekly video sessions to review the games. But despite these positive changes, the club has still lost 10 of its “most promising” players to other southern suburbs clubs, including Surrey Estate Rangers, Primrose and SK Walmers. Ariefdien hopes the changes will help lead the club back to winning ways, revive the dwindling community support and possibly lead to some of the players returning. However, he says it will come down to the players’ desire to see the club in the upper echelons of WP club rugby. “It’s more about attitude and the will to
win – if we get it right, then we can compete against the bigger clubs with this group of players,” he says. “We have quality players to fill those gaps (left by the players leaving). We just have make it happen on the field.” Collegians have played four warm-up matchesduring the pre-season, beating neighbours Rocklands RFC 22-5, losing 25-5 to Belhar, being thumped 25-0 by False Bay and thrashing Eerste River 45-12. Ariefdien’s side will open their campaign at home against Macassar on Saturday 6 April and he expects his players to “step up” and improve on their warm-up matches performances.

Urban Warriors crowned champions TASMIN CUPIDO AJAX Cape Town continued their dominance in youth football when they were crowned champions of the Metropolitan under-19 Premier Cup. The Ajax team beat Berea Albion FC from Pretoria 5-4 on penalties, after the match ended in a 2-2 draw, in the action-packed final at Erica Park in Belhar yesterday (Monday). The annual tournament, hosted by Bayhill United FC for the 25th time, featured 32 teams from across the country. The tournament was won by Chippa United last year. The teams reached the final, played in wet and windy conditions, after playing six matches over the Easter weekend. Ajax was impressive throughout the tourney, only conceding four goals – two of it in the final. They beat Belhar Spurs (7-0), Harmony Academy (2-1), Atlantis Academy (1-0), ASD Cape Town (1-0), Kaizer Chiefs (1-0) and Mamelodi Sundowns (0-0 and 3-1 on penal-
ties) to advance to the final. The player of the tournament was awarded to the Urban Warriors’ captain and centre back, Abubaker Mobara. Ajax coach David Nyathi was proud and happy of his team’s performance. “The boys had the belief and confidence that they could make it to the final and win it,” he said. “We have been working really hard to nurture these boys to ensure that they are successful.” The first 40 minutes saw Ajax dominate play with a series of attacks led by midfielder/striker Haasim Domingo. He was well assisted by the 2011 Engen Knockout Challenge player of the tournament, Riyaad Norodien. Ajax drew first blood when Tashreeq Morris netted his team’s first goal in the 24th minute. Morris started the play with a run and passed the ball to Domingo, who drew the defender. Domingo, from Hanover Park, again passed the ball to Morris, who beat the
Berea keeper, Brad Norman, with a well executed strike. With the Urban Warriors dominating both possession and territorial play, Berea employed an ultra defensive format. But Ajax was caught unaware when Berea’s substitute midfielder Daniel Vieira, who was brought on in the 31st minute, surprised the defence and scored his team’s first goal in the 36th minute. The equaliser led to the Berea team playing with more confidence. It continued in the second half when a Serge Gado strike gave his team a 2-1 lead in the 41st minute. From there on the men from the north gave the Ajax boys a tough time, playing well defensively and on attack. But Ajax equalised when substitute Olwethi Maloy, from Langa, headed a cross from Norodien – from just outside the box – past Norman in the 54th minute. The Berea team threatened to score with several shots at goal thereafter. The Ajax de-
fence looked shaky at times, with goalkeeper Brandon Petersen fumbling a number of balls. A wayward strike from Veiera in the 61st minute was the closest Berea came to taking the lead, while a missed header from goalscorer Morris was the closest Ajax came. The match ended in a 2-2 stalemate at the end of the regular time, taking the match into 15 minutes of extra time. Ajax threatened early in extra time, when Norodien received a ball, on the volley, from Justin Jacobus. His effort, however, went wide of the goal. Another Norodien cross in the second half of extra time, was also not finished by Morris. The teams could not find the net in extra time, which took the match to penalties. The Ajax penalty takers were flawless and, after two near-saves, Petersen managed to save the last Berea penalty to take his team to victory.
