New councillors ready to spring into action MELISSA LE ROUX
HE Democratic Alliance (DA) has triumphed in the Rondevlei subcouncil once again – clinching the new fifth ward – with the African National Congress (ANC) trotting behind in second place, during the local government elections on Wednesday 18 May. In the previous municipal elections in 2006, the DA won the votes of residents residing within the Rondevlei subcouncil. This year is no different, as elected councillors are all represented by the winning party. Four fresh faces have been elected as ward councillors within the Rondevlei subcouncil. . Ward 65 (Grassy Park, Lotus River and Montague’s Gift) elected ward councillor Leslie Isaacs, who is determined to relieve some of the poverty in his ward. “My mission as councillor, is to improve the living conditions of backyard dwellers. There are many people in the community who are unemployed – adding to the effects of poverty. I would also like to help create more jobs in the community,” he says. Isaacs adds that he is firm on tackling drugs and shebeens in the area, for the sake of the youth. “United, we can create a better ward where the community works together,” he says. . Ward 66 (Lotus River, Montague’s Gift, Ottery East and Parkwood) elected ward councillor Melanie Arendse, who believes that service delivery is very important. “My main focus will be on the
children in the communities. Many children drop out of school, and I would like to use my time as councillor to motivate them, and show these youngsters that there are better ways of doing things,” she says. As part of motivating youngsters in the community, Arendse will be involving herself in raising funds with the communities, so that learners may be given bursaries to further their studies and become active members of society. “An educated individual is a powerful individual, and I would like to use my time here to be more involved in my community. That’s the extra mile that the councillor has to take,” says Arendse. . Ward 67 (Capricorn, Seawinds, Lotus River, Pelican Park, and Zeekoevlei) elected Shaun August, who will be looking at providing his ward with “upliftment”. “My ward has a huge number of informal settlements – about 18. I want to help my community take advantage of skills development so that they may be able to put food on their table,” he says. Another focus point for August in his ward is creating a greater relationship between parents and their children. “I would like to conduct tours for the youth, by taking them to Pollsmoor Prison so that they may see the lives of negative role models, and then also showing the youth what a positive role model is,” he says. . Ward 72 (Elfindale, Grassy Park, Heathfield, Retreat and Southfield) re-elected Jan Burger, who says that he is very grateful to the residents who put their trust in him to act as a ward councillor for
READY FOR BATTLE: Thousands of fans flocked to the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 21 May, to watch the Urban Warriors, Ajax Cape Town F.C, capture their first PSL trophy in 11 years. However, the sea of red left the stadium disappointed, as the title went to Orlando Pirates on goal difference. Ajax required a victory, but failed to deliver, drawing 22 with Maritzburg United. Pirates on the other hand spoilt the party by beating Golden Arrows 21, with a late winner by midfielder, Isaac Chansa. In the photo are John Le Roux and his threeyearold son, Keyan. Photo: Yunus Mohammed another five years. When People’s Post asked him what he would be doing differently in this term, he said: “I will be more hands-on with tackling of the issues. We do it for the people and problems will be handled the same as before, just with more interaction from and with the community.” . Ward 110 – the newly created ward (Cafda, Prince George Drive and Grassy Park) elected ward Shanen Rossouw, who says her time as councillor will be spent covering the basic needs of residents. “Cafda really needs a lot of work. There are so many problems in this area, such as illegal dumping, drugs and gangsterism. I would also be focusing on making sure backyard dwellers are given better living conditions, such as electricity, water and sanitation. “My main focus in my ward will
be to strengthen Cafda and Grassy Park, and to bridge the gap between the two communities,” she says. The new ward councillors are eager to start their term as councillors, and each having different views on tackling the communities’ problems. Local hip hop star, Emile Jansen, ran as a candidate for Ward 65, as a representative of the South African Progressive Civic Organisation (SAPCO). With 79 votes at the election, the party lagged far behind the DA’s 7 319 votes. When People’s Post asked the Black Noise star why he stood as councillor, he said: “I believe there’s a lot of people in the community who are politically inclined, and who should be involved, but aren’t. I wanted to lead by example, and hopefully inspire others to become more involved. I do the work
in the community anyway, for young people, and I would love to inspire them to become more politically involved.” Jansen, whose passion lies with the youth of the community, says that he speaks a lot to youngsters about being proactive. “I am disappointed by the outcome and the rezoning of the ward, as it was only announced on the morning of the election. “What’s depressing is that people didn’t know who they were voting for. “Democracy today could be much more powerful if the people did research and read more up on the people they are electing to be their leaders. “I am learning as I go along and I will continue doing what I’m doing – hopefully I woke up some people in the community,” he says.

Bikers silence rumbling tums
THE 2011 municipal elections are over, with all the results in the various wards being released on Saturday 21 May.
THOUSANDS of children across the city are lucky to have just one meal a day, and many more go to bed on an empty stomach. The Egoli informal settlement in Ottery is one of the areas where poverty and hunger prevails. Relief came to the area at the beginning of this year, when On Eagle’s Wings Christian Motorcycle Social Club rallied to alleviate hunger for the children of Egoli. The club was formed at the beginning of the year by Southfield residents, Murvin Maree and his wife Glenda. After visiting Egoli last year, a seed was planted in the couple’s minds. The pair have been biking enthusiasts for over 20 years. Along with five friends – from Fairways and Goodwood – they ventured into the informal settlement to hand out food to the children.
These are the results in the four wards within the Grassy Park precinct: Ward 65 (Grassy Park, Lotus River and Montague’s Gift) where there were 13 786 registered voters, and the voter turnout was 9 147: . Every Saturday, the seven members gather at one of their houses and prepare food parcels. The group then makes its way to the informal settlement, where they spend time with the children – showing them that there are people who care about them – and ending off by providing them with a hearty meal. The motorcycle group would like to go beyond just feeding the children. Their goal is to take the children to a field, perhaps Zandvlei, and spend individual time with them – getting to know their names and providing a range of activities for them. The group will be hosting a bingo fundraiser on Friday 27 May at Rondebosch East Primary School in Fourth Avenue at 19:30 for 20:00. Booklets cost R20. Fishing for meaning ANDRE BAKKES
MOGAMED JACOBS looks down the deserted beach and finds comfort in his solitude. He chooses a spot which seems identical to the next, unpacks his fishing gear and prepares for a 10-hour shift of some serious unwinding. It is 05:30 on a rainy Tuesday morning, but the 36-year-old Mitchell’s Plain resident glows with content. This is, after all, doing what he loves most – fishing at Beespens near Strandfontein. “I’ve been coming here three times a week for about 20 years,” he smiles. Every time his face lights up, he resembles a man who is at complete peace with the world, a man who has discovered the very essence of happiness. He fishes about 10 hours a day and three times a week, so there is plenty of time to contemplate the meaning of life. “Sometimes I sit here the whole day and fail to catch anything,” he continues. “I will sit in a world of my own and forget about all my problems. One learns how to deal with these as well. Even if the fish don’t bite, I will start thinking rationally about various situations. Sometimes you will get an idea, quickly pick up your stuff and leave so that you can go and implement it.”

Upgrades From Single view set up to Extra (dual) view set up
HAPPINESS IS: Mogamed Jacobs in his element at Beespens. Jacobs was born in Bonteheuwel, a place he describes as being “a little rough around the edges”. His father taught him everything he knows about fishing, and he has been implementing these skills from a young age. “It kept me out of trouble,” he winks. This is one of the main reasons he wants his 13-year-old son, Tashreeq, to join him on his fishing excursions when he can.

“Unfortunately he isn’t too keen ... but I was the same when I was young. After some time I gave it a try, and as soon as that first fish bit, I was hooked for life.” Ever since then he has pulled out some real beauties, the biggest being an 11 kg kabeljou. He has caught a few sharks as well, which is apparently quite common. “A battle with a shark can drag you towards the water with quite a force. It could
take up to three hours to finally get it out of the water!” When listening to the excitement in his voice while he explains the thrill of the hustle, it becomes obvious that the serene wait is trumped by the big catch. And when that happens it is not only Jacobs who celebrates, but his whole neighbourhood. “If I catch many, or a big one, then I distribute it among those who are hungry. There are days when my neighbours would eagerly await my return and hope to benefit with a fish or two.” Jacobs insists, however, that a day without any fish is far from a failure, since the main reason behind his hobby is to relax and drift away in the breeze. Jacobs doesn’t pretend to know the answers to the meaning of life, but a lifetime on the beach has taught him one important lesson. “The secret is that one must work hard in everything one does, whether it be a job or a relationship. If you manage this, then you will show people your unique value.” French playwright, Marcel Pagnol, once said: “The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.” For the smiling Jacobs, the past, present and future represents just one thing – fishing.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: The upgrade on Strandfontein Road has added two lanes; however, the road has not yet been made safer for pedestrians. Photo: Archive
HASE ONE of the Strandfontein Road upgrade, costing R9,4 million, was officially opened on Monday 16 May, improving traffic flow due to its double lanes. This is according to Henry du Plessis, the City of Cape Town’s Director of Roads and Stormwater. The upgrade was motivated by traffic studies conducted about 10 years ago which suggested that the existing road could not support the volume of traffic that would be generated by the proposed Pelican Park Housing Development. The development’s Phase One is set to start in September. It will create 3 200 houses in Zeekoevlei, as previously reported by People’s Post (“More houses for Pelican Park”, 19 April). The upgrade has changed the single lane road into a dual carriageway, allowing a freer flow of traffic. However, it has been claimed that the new road poses a danger to pedestrians. (“Danger dash”, People’s Post, 26 April). The concern was that there were no proper safety measures for pedestrians using the road when they get off public transport. The road is a high-mobility route, says Du Plessis. Pedestrian walkways and cycle lanes will also be built to promote nonmotorised transport in the area. “A lane will be constructed to be used by community members who wish to cycle and jog without having to worry about being dangerously close to fast moving cars,” said Du Plessis. Theresa Solomons, who lives in Ottery,
GARDEN CHESS PIECES
says she uses the road on Sundays, as the church she belongs to is in Schaapkraal. “That road is very dangerous. We have to wait long before we can cross the road safely, and even then we have to dodge fast cars coming on. Something needs to be done,” she says. Du Plessis says traffic signals will be placed strategically according to the road’s construction. “Traffic signals will be placed at certain points on the stretch of road. This will be part of Phase Two of the upgrade of Strandfontein Road. “The traffic signals will act as a traffic calming measure, reducing conflict between motorists and pedestrians,” he says. Du Plessis adds that street lighting along the entire road has been installed to further add to the safety of pedestrians who may be using the road at night. When the entire Strandfontein Road upgrade project is complete, the existing Strandfontein Road will be used as a service road, running along the Eastern boundary of the proposed Pelican Park Housing Development, and direct access to Strandfontein Road will be restricted. Du Plessis says the City will be putting out a tender for the construction of Phase Two shortly, and work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The chairperson of Pelican Park/Eagle Park Residents’ Association, Yaseen Meyer, says that the road needs to be made safer for pedestrians as soon as possible. “I have received a lot of complaints from residents about their safety on the road. People appreciate the upgrade on the road, but it needs to be made safe for pedestrians soon,” he says.

RAIDED: Officers from the Grassy Park Police Station confiscated 4 374 litres of alcohol, valued at about R40 000, during a weekend raid. Three women, aged 34, 44 and 59, were arrested in Turkey and Harrier roads, Phumlani and Sixth Avenue, Grassy Park on Friday 20 May and Sunday 22 May, and were charged with dealing in liquor without a valid liquor licence. The spokesperson for the Grassy Park Police Station, Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith, says the officers had gained police warrants to search the three premises. “The 34yearold woman was arrested twice – once on Friday and again on Sunday. We are allowed to hold a police raid every day. She was given a warning on Friday, and on Sunday the business was continued,” she says. Grassy Park gears up for Youth Day Community to create HIV and Aids awareness MELISSA LE ROUX
TO HELP create awareness around youth activities in communities, the Grassy Park Community Festival committee will be hosting a Youth Festival on Youth Day, Thursday 16 June on the Klip Road field. Youth Day marks the commemoration of the Soweto uprising in 1976, when nearly 20 000 students took part in protests to fight for their rights. This day honours all the young people who lost their lives in the struggle against apartheid and Bantu Education. In association with the Grassy Park Community Policing Forum, Grassy Park Police Station and Oasis Organisation will be contributing to the day dedicated to the youth. The theme of the festival is “Youth and HIV/Aids” and on the day guest speakers will give talks on HIV/ Aids, drugs and abusive relationships. “The whole point behind the festival is to create awareness around the youth. Young people are so frivolous nowadays, and HIV/Aids is a serious issue. They just don’t seem to care about or worry about the complications,” says Jennifer Hoffman, secretary of the Grassy Park Community Festival.
The festival will run from 08:00 to 17:00, and will feature a host of activities and entertainment. There will be a soccer tournament for boys under the age of 13 and another one for young men under the age of 18. The registration date to take part in the soccer challenge is Friday 10 June. “It will be a fun-filled day for the entire family to enjoy some quality time together. There will be many different stalls for shoppers to take full advantage of,” says Hoffman. The Grassy Park Community Festival committee has been hosting Christmas festivals in the area since 1999, and this year, decided to dedicate a celebration festival to the youth in the community. Stalls at the Youth Festival cost R300 each for a food stall, and R200 for a non-food stall. Funds generated will be donated equally to various HIV/ Aids organisations, namely Beautiful Gate Aids Care Centre in Crossroads, Haven of Hope in Retreat and Compassion in Action in Grassy Park. The day will also be an opportunity for local talent to showcase what they have to offer. Any local artists wanting to perform on the day can contact Jenny on (021) 7017304, 082 677 3747 or Susan on (021) 7062591 or 073 445 7835.

Having won acclaim with another top SA real estate organisation before moving to RE/MAX in 2007, Mark and his team have won numerous awards, including “Best young RE/MAX office” in South Africa for 2007, Gold Club 2007, Chairman’s Club 2008 and Chairman’s Club 2009. Nothing, however, tops 2010, because while other estate agents were struggling to hold heads above water, Team Mark Brickles had their best year ever, winning not only the Diamond Club Award (the highest RE/MAX award), but also the No 1 Franchisee Owner Sales Team in South Africa, and ranked 8th Top Team in RE/MAX International Outside North America for 2010. When asked how they achieved this, Mark says it’s simple. “I have a dedicated team around me. Everybody on my team understands that the client comes first, and we are here to serve the client. “We are here to make things as

Here clients can find out what most real estate agents don’t want them to know.

Toy donation for pre-schools LIAM MOSES
TOYS to the value of R225 000 were donated to 15 pre-schools across the Western Cape last week. The toys were donated to the schools by retailer Game as part of the company’s corporate social investment strategy. “We chose the early childhood development level specifically for Game because we believe that the foundation level of a child’s
development is most important,” says Iris Naidoo, the corporate social investment practitioner at Game. The kits donated to the schools are valued at R15 000 each, and contain several types of educational toys, including puzzles, blocks and books. The toys were delivered to the pre-schools on Monday 16 May, and a handover ceremony was also held at the offices of the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD), in
A good eye for quality EYESAVE Optometrist in Victoria Road, Grassy Park, opened in September 1995 under the name Eyesite Optometrist. Due to ownership issues regarding the rights to the name Eyesite, the owner, Siraj Zalgaonkir, changed the name to Eyesave Optometrist a few years ago. Zalgaonkir, a qualified optometrist who was born in Victoria Road, Grassy Park, went to EC Primary School as well as Grassy Park High, where he matriculated in 1989. He furthered his studies in Durban at the University of Durban-Westville, where he qualified as an optometrist in 1994, and came back to Grassy Park to open his optometry practice in Victoria Road. To this day – 16 years later – he still serves the community from the same store, and would like to thank all the customers and friends who have supported Eyesave Optometrist over the years. Through its customer service and products, Eyesave Optometrist has expanded to an independent chain of eight stores in the Western Cape. “It can be difficult to judge the quality of a pair of spectacles, but we at Eyesave Optometrist use only the finest frames and lenses available so that your spectacles
will be dependable and attractive for a long time after purchasing them,” says Zalgaonkir. Eyesave Optometrist has the latest eye-testing equipment and professional, qualified staff to ensure that customers’ eye tests are thorough. “We offer a large selection of frames to choose from. Our expert staff will help you select the frame, shape, size and colour that looks good on you. “We offer the latest designs and treatments that can make your spectacles look thinner, feel lighter and glare free,” he says. Spectacles are a wear-and-tear item, and require constant service for optimal use. Thus Eyesave Optometrist urges the community to take up its offer of a free service check on spectacles, as often as needed. The spectacles house offers customers easy payment options by accepting all medical aids, credit and debit cards, lay-byes, and store cards, such as those from Edgars and Jet. There is a one-year guarantee on all products and services, and to accommodate all customers, Eyesave Optometrist is open until 19:00 on weekdays and Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00.

Rosmead Avenue, Claremont, on Tuesday 17 May. Game has partnered with the CECD so that the teachers at the beneficiary schools can be trained in how to use the new toys. According to Professor Eric Atmore, director of the CECD, the training was necessary to make the programme as effective as possible. “Game has provided the equipment and we use that equipment when we train teachers,” says Atmore “Providing equipment alone is not sufficient. Time to deliver THE local government elections are over; the electorate has played its part, the IEC has ensured a free and fair process, the victors have broken open the champers and the vanquished have regrouped. Now the real work begins. Every single election, be it municipal or national, be it at home or abroad, is characterised by electioneering. This courtship promises voters the world – in this case, the city. Politicians pull out all the stops, unreservedly so. Their ultimate goal is power; power that corrupts; absolute power that corrupts absolutely – as (loosely) quoted by 19th century historian and moralist John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, who said: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” True or false? In the political context, it has been shown to be the former and the names of some “great” South African men spring to mind. One man’s name stands out, though – that of an internationally-revered great man, our own former president Nelson Mandela, who did not succumb to the intoxicating lure of power. Election results are proof that “the people have spoken” and during this municipal elections, the people elected to keep the ANC in power, nationally. But in the coveted Western Cape, the DA has triumphed, obtaining an outright majority in a number of Western Cape municipalities, including Cape Town, where the party secured 135 seats, followed by the ANC with 73, and the ACDP and Cope, with three seats each. Delivery is crucial to running a city successfully, especially one as diverse as Cape Town. More importantly, though, the onus is on all political parties and their candidates to honour the mandate voters have entrusted them with and play equal leading roles in elevating all nine provinces to world-class standards.
ETV’s Naked News, broadcast on a Friday night/early Saturday morning after the 22:00 movie, has unlocked controversy among various organisations taking a
stand for family values, including the Family Policy Institute, which has called on members of the public to write in to etv in protest against the show. In the
show, woman presenters present art, entertainment and lifestyle news either naked or while stripping down. etv says the show will be aired over the next 12 weeks.
Your SMSes Court order not fulfilled IT IS only appropriate that I write to correct certain inaccuracies following the response of Mayco member, Shehaam Sims to my letter “Where are the rights of the poor?” (People’s Post, 17 May). I did not imply that the ruling of Judge Erasmus was “more than just an interpretation of the law”. This is the view of Sims, which she chose to raise on behalf of the DA on the eve of elections. Our constitution is the supreme law of the Republic; law or conduct inconsistent with it is invalid, and the obligations imposed by it must be fulfilled. Judge Erasmus applied his mind when he correctly ruled against the DA in the Makhaza toilets saga. The DA, like the ANC in the Free State, had clearly failed to provide proper sanitation – a basic human right to which the poor are entitled. In respect of the Bonnytoun judgement, Sims appears to skirt around some very clear instructions issued by High Court Judge, Deon van Zyl. He stated that “the City should within three weeks of his order, consult with Colin Arendse or Desmond Ross in their capacities as representatives of the applicants, concerning the housing programme and plan with the view to advising the homeless of all their housing options”. The three weeks referred to by Judge van Zyl ended on 19 May 2005. Des Ross has since passed away, and, after six years, I am still waiting for the City/DA to consult with me as instructed
by Judge van Zyl. Incidentally, the citizens of Bonnytoun did not “invade the land”. Some of them have been staying there for more than 20 years, and the daughter of Lizzie Khoma (first applicant) was born in Bonnytoun and delivered by the colleagues of Sims from the nearby Wynberg Fire Station. With regards to the Zilleraine Heights issue, I have minutes of a meeting where I was present when the pilot project for backyard dwellers in Grassy Park was discussed. Helen Zille even sent me an email on the subject, and I can only speculate as to why these facts were not presented by the DA administration in the High Court, prior to the granting of an eviction order. In order for readers to arrive at an informed decision following the response from the DA, they need only read People’s Post of 17 May “Ottery residents sick and tired of waiting for the City to give them houses”; “Crime thrives in dark streets of Grassy Park/Lotus River due to no lighting” and “Derelict buildings in Wynberg scare away customers”. With respect, the DA appears to “deliver” selectively and the facts I’ve raised above speak for themselves. COLIN ARENDSE Grassy Park This letter was sent to Councillor Sims prior to comment but no response was forthcoming. – Ed.

Racing through history IMAGINE a race through the history books, passing many of the historic landmarks built by the slaves in the early 1700s. This vision will become reality when the Jive Slave Route Challenge kicks off on Sunday 12 June. It will consist of four events; a half marathon, a 10km run or race/walk, a 5km fun run or walk, and a 10km big walk. According to Farouk Meyer, organiser of the event, the race is designed to place emphasis on the historic sites built and created by the slaves. “This race has to be different to the other races in Cape Town, because almost the whole of Cape Town was built by slaves, and there are many historical landmarks to be seen,” says Meyer. The race starts off in Darling Street in front of the City Hall, moves up Keizergracht towards District Six, down Roeland Street into Orange Street, then through the Company’s Garden and into Bo-Kaap before the race finishes on the Grand Parade. Some of the landmarks along the route include: . The Whipping Post on the corner of Buitenkant and Darling streets, which was once a place of torture and execution.

This was a post to which slaves and convicted persons were tied while receiving corporal punishment. . The Auwal Mosque in Bo-Kaap’s Dorp Street is the oldest mosque in the country. The Muslim faith was brought to South Africa by slaves brought to South Africa by the Dutch East India Company. This mosque’s history dates back to 1794 and the property was owned by a freed slave, Salie Coridon, of Ceylon. . Old Slave Church, South African Mission Museum at the top of Long Street, was founded by the SA Missionary Society in 1799 to spread Christianity to the slaves. . The Castle of Good Hope was built by the Dutch in 1666 after their arrival. The Castle was erected as a five-pointed star on the foreshore of Cape Town. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in SA. “Everybody is encouraged to join the race, because it’s an opportunity to explore your history during a race, which is something different and exciting,” says Meyer. People’s Post is proud to be the print media sponsor of this event. Entry forms for the race will be made available on Thursday 26 May. Allister vs Jake – coaching duel awaits TASMIN CUPIDO
MATCH of two halves – this is how one can describe the match between the DHL Stormers and the Blues at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday morning. And with the Blues convincingly taking the first of the two halves, going into half-time with a 19-3 lead, no Stormers fan can be criticised for not believing that their team could come back to win the match. But it was the men from the Cape who came back guns ablaze, winning the most important half and securing their first win on their tour of Australasia. They beat the home side 28-26, with a last-minute try by captain Schalk Burger, and an all-important conversion by stand-in flyhalf, Dewaldt Duvenage. The relatively young side, without many of their experienced stalwarts, stood up to the challenge laid down by the Blues, with the centre pairing of Johann Sadie and Juan de Jongh undoubtedly the stars in the performance. “They were playing against some pretty good opposition, and showed some great touches. “I am really pleased with their performance,” coach Allister Coetzee said of the young duo’s performance.“The win is a massive morale booster for this side, and definitely stands us in great stead for the rest of the competition.” The men from the Cape now turn their sights to the capital of Australia, Canberra, where they will face a struggling Brumbies side. And it is also in this match where Coetzee will meet his former coaching team-mate, Jake White, who recently accepted the position of head coach of the two-time championship side. How-
ever, he will only be assuming duty in 2012, but a recent surge in play by the Brumbies – they drew 13-13 to the Western Force in Perth on Saturday – indicates that White may already be assisting the side. With White and Coetzee working closely to secure the 2007 World Cup victory for the Springboks, it will be interesting to see just how much these two breeders remember of the others’ style and coaching techniques. The Brumbies’ preparations have been marred by the fact that star performers such as Matt Giteau, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Mark Chisholm have already signed up with other teams for next season, while injuries to the likes of captain, Rocky Elsom, have forced them to field relatively inexperienced sides week after week. However, one can never write off a side like the Brumbies, who have also been runners-up in the competition on three occasions. And with key players such as Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie and Peter Grant returning from injury, team selection will be interesting, after the performance by Sadie and De Jongh last weekend. Many have indicated that Coetzee and backline coach, Robbie Fleck should look to rest the pairing – De Villiers and Fourie – before the last stretch of the competition, while others have said that the two should play with the younger pairing playing on wing. If that should happen, the experience of Bryan Habana (wing) and Conrad Jantjes (fullback) will be lost, with paceman, Gio Aplon moving to fullback. A different approach may not always be necessary, but could prove vital in the remaining weeks of the competition.

Stunned Ajax’s tales of woe W
ANTED: A coach in the mould of Foppe De Haan plus an experienced pool of defenders and midfielders. These should be some of the prerequisites that Ajax Cape Town CEO George Comitis and his fellow directors will inevitably need to ponder as they reshape and strengthen their squad for next season. Ajax, after being in a virtually unassailable position to annex the Premiership champions’ title for the first time in its 11-year history, were denied a place in the soccer annals when Maritzburg United held them to a 2-2 draw at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The result afforded Orlando Pirates the honour to walk the red carpet – with a better goal difference record than Ajax’s – after a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. The dramatic change in fortune that came about midway through the second half– after Ajax had led 1-0 via a Khama Billiat goal – left De Haan devastated. Panic and pathetic defensive play had cost Ajax dearly – and ruined De Haan’s retirement from top-class soccer – at the most crucial time of the sea-
son. Veteran custodian Hans Vonk spoiled his farewell match when he failed to clear an innocuous back pass in the face of a determined challenge by goalscorer Gert Schalkwyk during a rare raid on the Ajax goal. Suddenly Ajax looked bewildered and Maritzburg sensed the Urban Warriors were in disarray. The pacy Felix Obada exposed longserving but injury-prone left flank defender Brett Evans – whose inclusion for the big match appeared to be based on sentiment. Yes, the risk of fielding Evans so soon after his recovery from injury backfired horribly. Then too, Nazeer Allie – also back from injury – looked unsure in his role next to Clayton Daniels at the centre of defence whenever Maritzburg applied pressure. And it told when his unforced handball infringement afforded Diya Sibisi the penalty opportunity to hit the target against his former club. Sameehg Doutie equalised after placing his low shot past goalkeeper and man-of-the-match Shu-aib Walters. But the livewire midfielders’ effort came too late. Pirates were already celebrating in Soweto. Now what Ajax need most desperately is an experienced mentor to replace De Haan – with the final choice that will be announced in a fortnight’s time like-
ly to be a fellow-Dutchman. A dependable replacement for Vonk is also vital as back-up keeper Andre Petim – with due respect to his unwavering commitment to the Ajax cause – lacks the build to deal with crosses into the danger area. The imminent return of Cole Alexander and Aiden Jenniker from a loan spell with Vasco Da Gama will pay dividends. Ball winners like Alexander and Granwald Scott operating in tandem have the potential to stabilise the Ajax midfield, while Jenniker could rival Evans for the left-back position. Another concern for Ajax of course is the habit of some of its key players to incur suspensions – at times, needlessly – when Ajax needed them most this past season. On Saturday, the suspended Thembinkosi “Terror” Fanteni watched the action from the stands. His ability to to dominate the aerial duels and to hold possession for the pacy Thulani Serero, Billiat and Doutie was sorely missed. Daniels also lost his composure when a needless handball infringement during a 3-0 win over Pirates ruled him out of a title-chasing clash with Mamelodi Sundowns, who fought back to draw 4-4 after trailing 1-4 in Pretoria in April. Ajax, Fanteni and Daniels certainly rue those moments of indiscretion.
