Coetzee plots to counter vengeful Bulls TASMIN CUPIDO
A
ROCK-SOLID defence, something the DHL Stormers have prided themselves on for the past two Super Rugby seasons, will be needed when the men from the Cape take on the Vodacom Bulls at DHL Newlands on Saturday. And with the side only conceding 13 tries this season, Allister Coetzee and his coaching team will be hoping the match, a traditional North vs South derby, will be a replica of the performances throughout this season. With the team coming off a four-week tour of Austrakia and New Zealand, in which they won three of their four matches, Coetzee will be hoping the long trek from Down Under will not play any role for his charges. He will also be hoping his team can replicate the performance they displayed against the Melbourne Rebels in the last game of their tour on Friday. The Stormers finished 40-3 victors, se-
curing a much-needed four-try bonus point and further cementing their hopes of getting a home semi-final later this month. And despite injuries to key players, the men in navy-blue-and-white showed the depth of the squad, as they completely annihilated Stirling Mortlock’s men. The young flyhalf, Kurt Coleman, impressed not only with his general play and ball distribution, but also his place kicking, with a near-perfect record for the match. He was also assisted well by Jean de Villiers, while replacement hooker, Deon Fourie again impressed with his general and set play. But the injury woes of the team may continue, as flyhalf Peter Grant, front rower CJ van der Linde and scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenhage remain doubtful for the Bulls clash. Fitness assessments were conducted on all three players yesterday, and the results will be revealed later this week. The last time the two sides met, it was the Stormers who ended victorious, with a 23-13 win at Loftus Versveld. The Bulls are likely to stick to their pat-
tern of forward play, while the Stormers would do themselves a favour by running the ball from side to side to ensure a victory. Interesting battles include those between the lock pairings of Reinard Elstadt and Andries Bekker, and Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha (Bulls), as well as the battle between the two sides’ loose forward trio. In the backline, everyone’s eyes will most likely be glued to the clash between Bjorn Basson (Bulls) and Brian Habana. In the Bulls’ 23-17 win over the Waratahs on Friday evening, Basson equalled Habana’s try-scoring record for a Super Rugby season (nine tries). He has been impressive throughout the season, gaining metres, being strong on defence and being a feared figure in the Bulls team. Habana has only recently shown form, and has been somewhat of a disappointment since moving to the Cape. A tight, true derby-style match can be expected when the two sides take to the field on Saturday.
