IN HOSPITAL: CALL FOR INVESTIGATION

Concern for pensioner TAURIQ HASSEN

A

frail Parkwood Estate pensioner, previously reported to be neglected and ill-treated in her council flat, is in hospital after suffering a stroke. Maureen Johnson is recovering at Booth Memorial Hospital after she had a stroke last month. Johnson has been in the media following suspicions by neighbours she is being ill-treated. These concerns resulted in a visit by MEC for Social Services Albert Fritz. This visit failed to quell concerns of neighbours over her well-being. Speaking on condition of anonymity, they remain worried for their elderly neighbour. Allegations are that the pensioner is locked in her room and neglected. A neighbour says she feels sorry for Johnson and has not stopped praying for her. “People walk in and out of her home at all hours of the night. There are sometimes arguments and fights break out, so I can understand why her health is being affected,” she says. The neighbour says Johnson is a “prisoner in her own home”. “The people at the flat sometimes lock her inside for long hours. The people around here speak to her through the window,” says the distressed neighbour. Colin Arendse, a community activist, says Johnson has been kept “under lock and key for the past year”. People’s Post attempted to obtain comment from Melany Kuhn, spokesperson for Fritz, but was unable to do so at the time of going to print. Arendse says, after following up with the provincial Department of Social Services, he was informed a process is underway to have Johnson placed in an institution which provides frail care.

MAKING IT COUNT: Thaakir Waggie (left) and Tahier Hufkie, of Witte bome High School, get to grips with equations during a maths tuition class for Grade 12 pupils. The classes are of fered to pupils who have enrolled for Pure Maths by the Wynberg NPO Living Through Learning (LTL). The sessions are facilitated by maths teachers and are aimed at aiding pupils with revision and to help them with sections they have trouble with. The classes are held at 1 Barnstaple Road in Wynberg. Registration fee of R10 is payable on ar rival. Obtain more details from Chicco Maluma on (021) 761 2842. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

“I am prepared to take this matter further if she is placed back in that house because it would show nothing is being done to resolve the issue,” he says. Arendse also contends no permission was granted for Johnson’s pension to be withdrawn by a third party. “She (Johnson) cannot even write or sign, so I do not know how it came about that she had given

(others) permission to start collecting her pension for her,” he explains. People’s Post has a number emails which have been forwarded to Premier Helen Zille, Department of Social Services and other community structures calling for assistance. Yaaseen Meyer, chairperson of the Grassy park Community Police Forum (CPF), visited the premises

following complaints from the community. While confirming complaints have been received of Johnson being neglected, Meyer says none of the allegations have been proven. “We are definitely concerned and we will be monitoring this situation closely.” Phillip Bam, chairperson for the Lotus River, Ottery and Grassy Park Ratepayers’ Association (Lo-

gra) and Greater Cape Town Civic Alliance, confirms a full investigation will be investigated. “We understand council had an agreement with the occupants of the house and now it should be the council’s duty to make sure that property is vacated,” he says. Bam says they are aware that some “untoward activities” take place at the flat, but he would not be drawn to expand in detail.

PRICE HIKE: COMMUTERS SEEK OTHER MODES OF TRANSPORT

Fuelled to take taxis

TAMMY PETERSEN

M

ore feet are making their way toward public transport interchanges as fuel prices hit an all-time high last week. And if the rand’s value continues to plummet, more petrol price hikes could be in the pipeline. Lift clubs, cycling and even old-fashioned walking are some of the alternatives motorists are now forced to consider to keep their budgets balanced. Taxi driver Arnold Dreyer says the clusters of people waiting at pick-up points have grown in the last week. An increase in passengers is fantastic, he says, as drivers will now have to drive extra trips to make their daily targets. “Most of the stops on my route have doubled in the number of passengers. It really is a blessing because the petrol price increase is really eating at our pockets,” he says. “No driver will ever say no thanks to extra bums on the seats.” To which one grumpy, particularly squashed commuter responded: “Ja, but one seat is made for one bum!” Taxi fares only increase once a year and taxi bosses say there has been no word on a price hike – yet. Douglas Mdoda says he has started working an hour extra to “squeeze in” an extra trip. “I have three kids and a wife whom I need to support. If I don’t make my target, my boss doesn’t pay me in full and I don’t make any extras. We work on a system similar to a commission structure. And if you don’t bring in the money, you don’t get fully paid.” Switching from his own car to public transport was an easy decision to make, Ralph Ockers says. He previously travelled about 40kms a day between home and work, and says the recent petrol price increase would have wreaked havoc on his budget. “I could manage if the price per litre rose by 10c, but to jump by almost R1 is ridiculous. Driving yourself to work is becoming a luxury,” he says. Train services apparently haven’t seen a drastic increase in commuters heading to stations. However, some periods have seen more bodies make their way through the turnstiles, says one ticket barrier.

ONE STOP: Taxis are one of the three modes of public transport cashstrapped motorists may consider. “Usually, things slow down between 07:30 and 09:00, as most people would already be close to or at work. But this period has now also become more busy,” he explains. More “professional-looking” people are also using the train, he adds. “It appears that more suit and high-heel wearing commuters are standing on the platforms. It is, after all, the cheapest transport service.” Lizelle Marais works as a personal assistant in the city centre. For five years she has been part of a lift club, but can no longer afford this “luxury”. “It was either give up the wheels or give up the necessities,” she says. “And while travelling by train is most of the time quite unreliable and in no way glamorous, it is easy on the pay cheque.” Brett Herron, the Mayoral Committee member for Transport, urges motorists to consider using public transport wherever possible, or to walk or cycle to take the sting

out of the fuel price hike. “The cost of travelling on public transport is a fraction of the cost of running a private vehicle. Another consideration is that public transport costs increase only once a year – not whenever there is a rise in the price of fuel,” Herron says. The capacity of the current road and transport infrastructure is under increasing pressure, resulting in longer peak periods, worsening congestion and wasting valuable time in traffic, Herron explains. “Public transport really is the way of the future – it is much cheaper, less stressful, and more environmentally-friendly than travelling by car. It is a crucial factor in building a sustainable Cape Town and helping to increase the liveability of the city.”

Striking a pose for a good cause TAURIQ HASSEN

While other teenagers spend their time on idle pursuits, a group of youngsters are plotting their next move to help their community. Calling themselves Making Originality Beautiful (MOB), six youngsters are putting their talents to good use to raise funds. They model, sing and dance. MOB manager Roekshana Adams says in spite of the group having failed at their first attempt to raise funds for an old-age home, they are already planning their next event. “What makes us unique is that we are young and we pride ourselves in that we don’t promote the use of alcohol or drugs, which is a factor influencing our youth today,” she says. Earlier this year, the group hosted an event at the Retreat Civic Centre and hoped to donate half of their earnings towards an old-age home of their choice. “We had hoped to make enough money to donate to a charity. We were not able to, but we will not stop there,” a determined Adams says. Founding member Isgaak Cassiem (19) says MOB is about giving youngsters the platform to strut their stuff and at the same give back to their communities. The idea was generated once the youngsters realised that with their free time they can use their unique talents to raise funds for the less fortunate. “It was tough in the beginning, but we have set a goal for ourselves. This organisa-

tion has brought so many different people together from different areas, all wanting to give back to the community,” he says. MOB plans to make their first donation to the Beitun-Nur home, but also has many other ideas for the future to assist those in need. They are planning a blanket drive and aim to also collect secondhand clothing for the poor. Fay-yaadh Samuels (19) from Hanover Park says he joined MOB to help the many children facing tough times. “We might only be doing this for REMEMBER THE NAME: The MOB team works to raise funds for the poor. fun, but we have a goal in mind and that is to ensure that we members of the community.” are looking after those who don’t have,” he Ashraf Karriem (18), a model from Ottery, says. says giving back to the destitute makes him “Some people take the little things for feel good. granted, but that is what MOB hopes to ad“It could easily have been any of us in such dress. SAFER PURSUITS: FACTORY HAS A SOCIAL CLUB

Pitfalls of after-work drinks TAURIQ HASSEN

I

t may be a form of socialising, but afterwork drinking with colleagues has its own pitfalls. For factory worker Johan Abraham Hollenburg (47) it had dire consequences. Hollenburg was murdered during an altercation on Friday 14 June. After a long day at work, Hollenburg and some colleagues decided to unwind with a few beers on the side of the road. But things quickly turned ugly. His close friend, Jo-Anne Ceasar, says the group was joined by men from a nearby factory, who were allegedly also drinking. Matters came to a head and Hollenburg was badly beaten and died of his injuries. He is believed to have been kicked in the head several times by men wearing steeltipped boots. “It is really sad, but the message is quite clear: if Johan just returned home to his family this could have all been avoided and he would still be with us today,” says Ceasar, with a heavy heart. She says the sight of factory workers gathering to drink on the side of the road is an

all too familiar sight with dangerous and deadly repercussions. “You will hear them fighting among each other, arguing and making threats. They are not even supposed to be on the road, but with their families,” she says. “This is a major problem and people must be warned before many others follow in the same footsteps as Johan.” Leeny Harris, Hollenburg’s devastated aunt, says she still looks out for her nephew in the afternoon. The Ottery resident says she has yet to come to terms with his death. “He was always standing outside making jokes and making people laugh. He never hurt anybody.” She still has the last image of her nephew imprinted in her memory, adding it is too late to wish he had come straight home that day. “He was grown man and I never told him what to do. But it would have been nice if he had just come home. Maybe he would still be outside making people laugh,” she says before breaking into tears. A Wynberg furniture factory owner, Isma-eel Daniels, says after-work parties

have already claimed three lives at his workplace. In one incident two of his workers were involved in a car crash. Another worker was stabbed six times during a robbery. He later succumbed to his injuries. “I have many people working in the factories and cannot control all of them once they leave the workplace.” Daniels has resorted to safer alternatives. “I decided that we should start a social club to get our workers to refrain from drinking after work,” he says. The social club has been in place for just over a year and every Friday workers would gather at the factory to play games and enjoy some snacks. They also provide transport for the workers who choose to stay behind and participate with the club. “The club is not compulsory as we cannot force people to stick around after work, but we made it interesting enough to get many of them interested (in participating),” Daniels says. . Retreat man wakes up every day with one thing on his mind and that is to play his part in children’s sports development within the community. Ashlynne Hendrickse (23) started the Growing in Sport initiative in April and targets primary schools in Cape Town. The project focuses on the foundation of development of sports among children. “Growing up, I always believed that I was going to make a difference in the lives of many people. I always believed that, through my knowledge, understanding and great passion of working with children in sport, I could make a difference somehow,” says Hendrickse, the CEO and founder of Growing in Sport. Schools are able to hire Growing in Sport coaches to coach at their schools at an affordable rate. The project also looks to focus on giving back to schools that are in much tighter financial situations, but are looking to have sports development at school level. It also caters for sports birthday parties, corporate sports events, holiday clinics and sports events. “I grew a strong desire to develop children in their sports throughout the Western Cape and also empower young and experienced sports coaches with a small income,” Hendrickse says. “I also want to bring professional sports coaching at an affordable rate within the communities of Western Cape.” Growing in Sport recently wrapped up a successful holiday soccer clinic at the Ashford Soccer Club in Heathfield at which former Nashua Cape Cobras head coach Shukri Conrad also participated. The clinic saw children between the ages of five to 14 years being mentored by coaches and receiving certificates and prizes on Friday. The Growing in Sport initiative was launched at Westcott Primary School in Diep River.

PARK OFF LIMITS: YOUTHS UNSOCIABLE

TAURIQ HASSEN

Y

ouths drinking at a Lotus River recreational park is creating a hurdle for children wanting to play. The youths are said to be drinking mere metres from the park entrance, on the corner of Zeekoe Road and 9th Avenue. And distressed parents say the drinking is resulting in unsociable behaviour. One mother, who wants to be known as Joan, explains that children now fear going to the park because of this illegal activity near the park. “They are scared to walk past these youngsters who sit there all day drinking and carrying on with each other. They are not allowed to be drinking in public, so I cannot understand why nothing is being done,” she says. Joan says Grassy Park police do not act when spotting the youngsters.

Locals fume over public drinking David Schreuder, an angry parent who has confronted the group on a number of occasions, says they are “too stubborn and rude” to listen to any of the concerns he has had. “They are drinking on that corner and I suspect they might also be smoking dagga. Our children are in the park and they have to be exposed to this each day,” he says. “It isn’t right and they must be exposed. Hopefully other parents can read this and warn their children about hanging out at that corner.” Schreuder has reported the matter to the police, but is adamant that if the activities continue, action should be taken. “I am not only concerned about my chil-

dren, but there are others who use that space. It is a public space and I am hoping they (the youths) realise what they are doing is wrong.” During the interview, there were no youths drinking at the site. However, an empty beer bottle had been found at the site. Phillip Bam, chairperson of the Lotus River, Ottery and Grassy Park Ratepayers’ Association (Logra), says the issue of public drinking reaches beyond the park. “The problem is not only confined to this area. There are a whole host of youngsters wandering the streets aimlessly getting up to all sorts of untoward things,” he says. Bam says drugs is a plague and urges the police to refocus their efforts.

“Plenty of youngsters are sucked into the drug world, but police need to start making a difference. They are arresting more of the buyers rather than the sellers.” He says Logra will be keeping a close eye on convictions, adding: “We pay lots of money to buy properties in the area and the people don’t deserve to be living in these types of conditions.” Grassy Park Police Station acting spokesperson Captain Ish Smith urges the community to get involved with police, the Community Police Forum and other crime-fighting organisations. “When police do receive complaints, we act immediately,” he says. He says a person found smoking dagga faces jail time. Depending on the circumstances, anyone who is caught drinking can be fined. V Report public drinking and any other crimes to the Grassy Park Police Station on (021) 700 3900, (021) 700 3903/2 or (021) 700 3922.

Do your bit to help For one day in July the world stops to consider doing good for others in honour of former president Nelson Mandela. In a proactive step, the Douglas Murray Home for the Aged in Retreat, has drawn up a detailed needs list to assist individuals or organisations. CEO Fred Daniels says this is an “exciting yet very busy time as we have for the past few years benefited from the goodwill and charity of others on Mandela Day”. He adds: “Already a number of individuals and organisations have confirmed they will have selected the home to be their Mandela Day beneficiary for 2013 and for which we are extremely grateful. The home is struggling financially and has very limited resources to provide adequately for the needs of the 80 frail and elderly residents in our care.” He says they welcome support on the actual day (Thursday 18 July) or any other day this month. “All we ask is that, if you are planning on coming to the Home, that you book your timeslot in advance to help us plan and coordinate better.” You can assist the Home through donations of cash or material support; volunteer your services at the home for 67 minutes or longer. ECO-FRIENDLY: PROTEST IN SONG

Rapping to save the Princess TAURIQ HASSEN

A

local artist hopes his tunes can drive away proposed plans to build a shopping centre at the Princess Vlei heritage site. Emile Jansen, aka Emile YX?, from Grassy Park teamed up with the group Mixed Mense which comprises of youths from Lavender Hill. Eight years ago, Jansen started working with the children through another project called Heal the Hood. “The world must know about local government’s horrible intention to build a shopping mall on the edge of the wetland, just when the world is about to be faced with the biggest water shortage yet,” Jansen says. The song Save Princess Vlei – No Mall has already been a major hit across Cape Town drawing people to the Facebook page and links of the proposed plans. He explains that legend has it the vlei was named for a Khoi princess who was abducted and raped by the Portuguese and taken into a cave at Elephant’s Eye, which is situated in the mountains above the Cape Flats (at Silvermine). “It is said she cried so much that her tears formed the wetlands of the area,” Jansen says. The proposed development by Insight Property Developers is expected to comprise a 9090m2 shopping mall and a 100m2 taxi rank, leaving only a 30m buffer strip from the vlei’s shore for recreational purposes. It has been a hard-fought battle between the owners of the land, the City of Cape Town, provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning and opposing parties since the revelation of the plans more than 15 years ago. The first of its kind in a chain of wetlands running through Grassy Park, Princess Vlei is relatively small. “We cannot allow them to win,” says the determined hip hop superstar. Jansen, originally of Black Noise fame, has been in the hip hop genre for more than 30 years. “This is a learning process I am taking these youths through in a way of healing their heads about themselves,” he says.

Phillip Bam, Grassy Park resident and founder member of the Princess Vlei Forum (PVF), explains that the forum was established to spearhead the fight against the mall. They also helped formulate the vision of the vlei as a “living asset for present and future generations. EDITORIAL COMMENT

Fill ’er up

It has become a familiar and accepted sight, one which passes with nary significance every Tuesday before the dreaded fuel price hike kicks in. That’s when drivers line up bumper-to-bumper at petrol stations to fill up ahead of the petrol price hike the first Wednesday of that month. The media has ad nauseum given tips on how to beat the fuel price hikes. Drivers are encouraged to take public transport, from trains and taxis to Rikkis, car pooling and even cycling or walking. And, for those resilient drivers who have been able to continue using their cars to work, here’s fair warning: there’s another fuel price hike on the cards for next month. It’s a leap and you may well want to investigate how you can institute some of those tips. The next increase due on Wednesday 7 August is reported to be 61c. And it will hit your pocket hard as it erodes your disposable income. With the petrol price after this month’s already steep 84c increase standing at R12.86, the new price hike will bring the cost of a litre of petrol to R13.47. The department of energy attributes the fuel increase to the weak rand and international crude oil prices. Even so, South Africa is reportedly in a middle ground when it comes to fuel cost extremes. Using the exchange rate as at Thursday 20 June, when US$1 = R10.23, one newspaper survey found that the petrol price in South Africa was the 40th most expensive among the countries investigated. At the time petrol cost R13.23 a litre. Venezuela was the cheapest, at 11c a litre, while the US, in 51st place, charged R9.51c a litre. The most expensive country to fill up was Turkey. Drivers there paid R26.97 for a litre of petrol. Other European countries also exceeded the R20 a litre bracket. Drivers here may argue that the incomes of this developing nation do not compare favourably with those of European countries. Brace yourselves.

Bakkie theft can’t halt good work Hard work will I am writing to you hoping that my story will reach hearts. This is a post I placed on Facebook and the response was overwhelming. “On Sunday Uncle Keith and Aunty Tina’s bakkie, which was their transport to fulfill Gods work by going out to feed the needy of our community, was stolen. This morning they opened their home as the community of Freedom Park came to their home so that they can still get their soup and bread. Yes, a true work of God. “Crippled” by the theft of transport will not stop God’s work from being done. God Bless you, Uncle Keith, Aunty Tina, Kitta and Anna for still going forward”. This led to me writing to you. Some of you may know Keith Blake, a retired police captain that gave his heart to the Lord and in so works in God’s light to stand for and “protect and serve” the people less fortunate in our community, Ottery, when they have nothing or nobody to be there for them.

Blake experienced on Sunday a setback that shocked him and our community when his Isuzu bakkie was stolen in our road right in front of his eldest son’s home between 16:00 and 16:30, but this did not deter him. With his weekly soup kitchens and random visits to the informal settlements, especially when he has been blessed with veggies or clothing to hand out to the folk of these settlements, I thought how would he go out and feed the people. But he opened his home to the people of Freedom Park and invited them to his home so that they can still get their cup of soup and bread. This alone stands as testimony to God. “Crippled” by theft of his vehicle did not stop the work of God and Blake (aka Kaptein), through his diversity and in service to the people of our community. I hope and trust this (letter) will touch you as this gesture has touched me. Colleen Langenhoven, Ottery

Phumlani Village hall needs attention Let me take this opportunity to thank all those who made it possible by making sure that children got equipment to play. Let me thank the New Chapter Foundation, university students and my fellow leaders. The councillor (Shaun August) promised since last year to adopt Phumlani Hall and bring a fence and paint. Inside, the roof is leaking and windows are broken. To this day we are still waiting for him to keep his promise. The grass inside and outside the hall where the equipment is located is so high and outside it is like a bush where snakes and criminals can hide. Clearly the place is not safe. It is unacceptable that the councillor and the City relegate all their responsibilities to non-profit organisations.

I’m calling on the City to come forward and show us what they mean when they say “the City works for you”. Eric Balebanye, Phumlani Village Ward councillor Shaun August comments: I would like to get this matter straight. This hall does not belong to the City of Cape Town. It is a community hall managed by the community. The hall is currently occupied by various NGOs and churches. I have assisted many times with the cutting of the grass and handing out of food at this centre. I have never promised a fence because it does not belong to the City, but I will agree that we are planning to repaint the hall from my own funds and looking for partnerships such as the Scouts to assist us.

A big ‘thank you’ for generous donation We want to thank Woolworths Grassy Park, the management and team for their donation. Your donation has greatly assisted in our endeavours to alleviate poverty and

uplift our community. We trust that your business will grow from strength to strength. The group really appreciates your donation. Anonymous

eventually pay off

I have sympathy with the people in Esther Road. I had the same problem with an illegal workshop. Christoff Jacobs from the South Peninsula Municipality dealt with my case. The person appeared in court and received a suspended sentence and instructed to seize operations. It took two years, but it paid off in the end. Warren October, Lotus River

Your SMSes . On Monday 1 July a truck pulled up on the field between Avocet and Buck roads and dumped rubble and drove off. This is not a dumping site as houses are situated next to and opposite the field. What bothers me is that vagrants scratch through this rubble and other mess also dumped there. On Thursdays, dirt day, people empty stolen bins and wander off to sell. What or how does one get this problem solved when there is a bush growing and no attempt is made to have it cut? Frustrated resident . In Schaapkraal we have the same problem. People get fined, but still do it. I think the Metro Police must use the Ghost Squad and follow trucks and bakkies. The guys who dump tyres are also causing problems. Jackie . It is heartbreaking to read these stories, as these people are our “lost generation”. I believe only early intervention and compassion, together with a strong support system, can overcome this scourge. Unfortunately so many addicts are already too far gone (and) lose that vital family support. I’m not even sure if more and cheaper rehabs will help while tik is freely available on every corner. A very sad reader and concerned citizen . Bring back chain gangs to clean all areas – roads, pavements, beaches, bridges and everything that needs repair, even house building. Hard work will restore dignity, reduce crime in jail and introduce studies at night. Take away TV. Yasmin

THE NIYAAT OF FASTING IS: Nawaitu Sauma-Ghadin An-Adaai Fardi-Ramadana, Ha-Thee-His Sanati, Li-la-Hi Ta'Aala “I intend to fast for the coming day in order to perform my duty towards Allah in the month of Ramadaan in the present year” NIYAAT FOR BREAKING FAST IS: Alla-Humma Laka-Sumtu Wa'ala Rizqi ka aftar-Tu “Oh Allah, for Thy Glory have I fasted, and now I break the Fast with food that cometh from Thee” ALLAH SAYS IN THE HOLY QUR’AAN Surah 11 - Ayat 185 Ramadaan is the (month) in which was sent down The Qur’aan, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong) So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month, should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you, He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to Glorify Him in that He has guided you, and perchance ye shall be grateful.

110 years and still growing LIAM MOSES

N

early 110 years after being formed under a tree in Wynberg’s Broad Road, the Cape District Local Football Association’s (CDLFA) oldest team is still going strong. Spenston AFC has gone through highs and lows, victories and defeats, championships and relegations in its history but still has a thriving membership and player base. David Vermaak (56), the club’s former president and a member for the past 46 years, says the club has survived every political system in South Africa. “It’s significant that the club is 110, be-

cause it was there before apartheid, during apartheid when everyone was moved around and now we are still here,” he says. “Spenston was a Wynberg-based club and it stood the test of time and it’s still going strong. It was strong leadership that kept this club going. George Cloete was president of this club for over 50 years. Under his leadership we won the Maggot Trophy three times and produced two South African players.” The club’s name and emblem come directly from the day of its foundation, with the club crest still showing the tree under which the club was formed and the club’s name taken from the name of the house opposite the

tree. Vermaak broke a family tradition when he decided to join Spenston in 1967. Instead of joining Yorkshire AFC as his relatives had, he left the decision up to chance and decided to join whichever side won the next derby match. Vermaak went on to break into the Spenston first team at the tender age of 16 and he turned down an offer to play professionally for Cape Town United a year later. His loyalty was eventually repaid when he started his own mechanical workshop and succeeded thanks to the support of the club’s members years later. “This club has really been a family over

the years. No one really leaves the club once they join. It doesn’t matter what club they leave for, they always come back,” says Vermaak. “Once you join Spenston you are always Spenston. Playing soccer for Spenston gave me great pleasure. This club built my family.” Spenston Amateur Football Club will celebrate its 110th anniversary with over 100 players on its books, teams in every age group and its family spirit still intact. The club aims to celebrate its 110th year in existence with a special kit and a gala dinner to be hosted in October. Liam.Moses@peoplespost.co.za

fter hours of gruelling training sessions and six pressurised qualifying matches, 16 football teams will reap the rewards when they play in the finals of the 10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge. The Challenge will pit Cape Town’s best under-17 footballers against each other in a battle for the prize money, bragging rights and possibly the chance at a professional career. People’s Post is the tournament’s print media sponsor. Many of South Africa’s most celebrated professional footballers first made a name for themselves or were scouted at the Engen Knockout. Edries Burton, chief operations manager at host club Santos FC, urged the current crop of players to make the most of their opportunity and emulate the Engen Knockout’s most famous products. “As a former player, my challenge to the young players is that there is an opportunity here. If you look at Thulani Serero – this is where it started for him and look where it’s going,” he says. “The stars are the limit for these young players. Who knows where they can end up? They are young and have the world at their feet. They can make a decision to finish further than Thulani Serero; it’s entirely up to them.” Over 100 teams started the qualifying process at the beginning of June and on Thursday the 13 teams who made it through were divided into groups along with automatic qualifiers Ajax Cape Town, Chippa United and Santos FC. Group A contains Pinelands club Old Mutual Academy, Mitchell’s Plain’s Kenpark United, Green Point Salesians and Island Rovers In Group B defending champions Ajax Cape Town, National First Division (NFD) side Vasco da Gama, Cape United and Kuils River United will vie for the top two spots of the group. Engen Santos, Hanover Park FC, Kraaifontein City and Grassy Park side Crusaders have been drawn in Group C, while Group D will pit the NFD’s Chippa United, Bishop Lavis FC, Atlantic Nacional and Claremont’s ASD Academy against each other. In past years the tournament was hosted at the Stephen Reagan Sports Complex in
