Safer cycling projects gather pace TAURIQ HASSEN

T

HE City of Cape Town’s R50 million Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) project will soon be rolled out across the city. On Thursday 16 February, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater, Councillor Brett Herron, visited a number of sites across Cape Town for an update on other elements of the system. There are 19 projects in either design, tender or construction phases across Cape Town, with Military Road in Retreat and Vrygrond falling under the design stage of the project. Concert Boulevard in Retreat, and De Waal and Victoria Roads’ NMT, from Grassy Park to Plumstead’s employment areas, are under construction. The new NMT project will be no ordinary walkway or cycle lane, but will also have features such as benches, speed humps, raised pedestrian tables, signage, landscaping, bollards and cycle racks. Some other sites include Albert Road from Liesbeeck Parkway to the existing NMT facility in Adderley Street in the CBD, Rondebosch Common, Nantes Park in Athlone, and Merrydale Road in Mitchell’s Plain. Ward Councillor Jan Burger said plans for the NMT projects were submitted in 2006. He was very ex-

cited to see the project unfolding. “This is a really big deal for the area, because now cyclists will have their own dedicated lanes and will be able to travel between areas and most importantly, they will be able to do it safely,” says Burger. According to Herron, the vision of the project is to create a cycle and pedestrian friendly city “with a well-connected network of NMT infrastructure”, which would provide the opportunity to walk, cycle or skateboard as far as you like on “safe, dedicated lanes”. “The city was recognised in January at the Sustainable Transport Awards in the USA for its commitment to building an integrated public transport system and today we can see how people will be able to walk, cycle or take public transport to wherever they want to go,” says Herron. He explained that it is of vital importance to introduce this sustainable transport system to allow people from Cape Town to have easy access to these sort of facilities. The cycling lanes will be segregated from the rest of the road, reducing conflict between motorist and cyclist. “We are looking to introduce safe infrastructures to ensure that everybody using these lanes will be travelling safely,” says Herron. Dr Gina Ziervogel, senior lecturer at the Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences at the University of Cape Town, believes that the project is a “fantastic idea”.

She explained that urban areas are more prone to producing green house gases due to the amount of cars on the road. “There have always been problems with the planning around transport routes within the city, so it’s better to plan routes that does not emit green house gases,” says Ziervogel. “There is a need for these projects within the City of Cape Town and it’s too early to say whether it will be sustained, but the idea is fantastic and should be encouraged in more areas,” Ziervogel added. Cyclist from the Retreat and Grassy Park areas were overwhelmed by the news of a designated cycle lane. Ashraf Abrahams, 39, is dedicat-

ed to cycling and competes every year in the Cape Argus Cycle Tour. He also enjoys cycling from his home to Cape Town and back. “I don’t do it regularly, because safety is always an issue and today, people knock you off your bicycle and drive away. These concerns as a cyclist are always on one’s mind and if this project will take those concerns away, it should be done as soon as possible,” says the determined Abrahams. Another cyclist from Retreat, who has dreams of competing in the coveted Tour De France one day, fears Cape Town’s roads, but will not stop until his dream has become a reality. George Williamson has been cycling for the past 22 years, tracking

down the most challenging routes around Cape Town, but always felt that roads were not safe enough to cycle on. “I’ve been knocked down already and that left me shaken because I struggled to get back on the road in fear of being knocked down again. So if there is a project that could help me get closer to that dream of mine, then it should get started,” Williamson laughed. “Through this NMT project, cyclists will be able to feel a lot safer on the roads,” Councillor Burger added.

Hamza was born with achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism, and midfacial hypoplasia, his mid-face had not developed properly. During this time Hamza was in and out of hospital with breathing problems. In 2003, his breathing difficulties caused his heart to fail. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where a decision was taken to do a tracheostomy (a hole in the throat) to create room for him to breathe. Hamza stayed in hospital convalescing after the tracheostomy and doctors were unable to wean him off the ventilator. Fortunately, Hamza’s mother graduated from the programme and two months later he was discharged. During the next year he was slowly weaned off ventilation. During a ninehour surgery the distracters were inserted in Hamza’s jaw. These would gradually create space for his facial bones to grow normally. The surgery was a success and several months later the distracters were removed. This meant that his upper airway was clear for him to breathe through and after additional follow-up surgeries; his tracheostomy tube was removed in December 2011. When Hamza returned to Vista Nova in January he was greeted with applause. Jolly good after 100 years LILLIAN AMOS

JOY and laughter was the order of the day when pupils, teachers, ex-learners and parents celebrated Grassy Park E.C Primary School’s 100th year in existence. On Monday 13 February, Grassy Park Civic was bustling with activity, from gum boot dancing to choir song. School principal Bertrand Ehrenreich, who’s retiring at the end of this year, has been teaching at the school since 1995 and believes the school is a beacon of hope to the community and surrounding schools. “We are extremely professional but we never forget the human factor. Our motto is to work hard and to maintain the ethos of caring and sharing for each other and every learner.” Another teacher, Diann Adriaanse, who has been teaching at the school for almost 29 years, was also a learner at the school and says it is an honour for her to join the celebrations.

“I am overjoyed to be able to be part of something of this magnitude, it’s great. “My family and I moved down here to Grassy Park from Simon’s Town because of the Group Areas Act. In 1973 I joined Grassy Park E.C and from there I went to Grassy Park High School, studied, and came right back to my roots.” The proud teacher beams as she boasts about the school’s hard-working ethics. “I am so proud, seeing so many students go through my hands. I am teaching old learners’ children.” Erenreich would like to encourage the teachers and students at E.C Primary School to maintain the loving attitude that can be found in the classrooms and the playground. Asking him about his retirement he says, “It is going to be a challenge because I have been involved in teaching for so long, but it gives an opportunity for the school to progress, for new adventures and new ideas. But I will still be helping out in future, if my help is needed.”

Work on flats ‘up to par’ THE materials used for the upgrade of the council-owned flats in Ottery conform to the respective quality standards that is required. This is according to Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg. The Ottery Concerned Peoples Forum (OCPF) handed a memorandum over to the City of Cape Town’s office in Ottery highlighting grievances around the upgrade of council-owned flats. Residents complained that the appointed contractors were using inferiors materials and had adopted poor workmanship skills, as reported in last week’s edition of People’s Post, (“Residents unhappy with upgrade”). According to Sonnenberg, the materials used in the upgrade conform to the respective quality standards applicable. However, it was observed that toilet seats were being broken because of the various ways people use the toilets, and the contractor was obliged to replace these with a more durable one.

“Incidentally, Ottery received special mention in the recently awarded, highly coveted South African Housing Foundation’s Housing Project of the Year 2011. Last year the upgrading project also scooped the Best Project Award in the Institute of Municipal Engineering South Africa (IMESA) Western Cape 2011 Branch awards and was featured prominently in the SA Institute of Civil Engineers’ magazine,” he says. The City is monitoring all contractors involved in the Community Rental Units (CRU) project, including workmanship, he says. When residents move back into their renovated homes all complaints will be fully investigated and responded to, using a “snag list”. Another complaint from residents was that their personal improvements in homes were being destroyed. “The upgrade is providing better living conditions for its tenants, substantially raising the standard of the City’s aging housing stock and greatly improving people’s quality of life,” says Sonnenberg. The first phase of the upgrade is due for completion in 2015, when 7 500 units will have been upgraded. To date, almost 2 500 units have been completed.

Buck stops here IN a bid to fight fraud and corruption, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will re-register all social grant beneficiaries. There are over 15.3 million beneficiaries of social grants, of which 10.3 million are children. Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini has given an assurance that none of the 15.3 million social grants will be cut during re-registration. In fact, the introduction of an automated biometric-based payment system will enable Sassa to directly pay the right social grant to the right person. The first phase is from 1 March to the end of May. During this phase, beneficiaries should continue collecting their grants where they always do. During this period, new beneficiaries will be enrolled on the new biometric system at Sassa offices. The second phase, from June 1 to December 31, will see existing beneficiaries being enrolled on the new system at Sassa pay points, local offices and designated sites. Sassa will re-register beneficiaries over 75 years of age and bedridden beneficiaries at their homes and institutions. With thousands of convictions for grant fraud, it makes sense that Sassa constantly reviews and eliminates potential weaknesses in its system. An initial investment into a more sophisticated system equates to short term sacrifice for long term gain. Along with rolling out new payment models, educating those on the receiving end of fraudulently acquired grants, is compulsory. Social grants are for those who desperately need financial assistance, but sadly, there are shameless individuals who exploit the system, without a thought for the countless women whose childrens’ fathers have vanished. Without social grants, most of these mothers would have no means of providing for their offspring, which makes the actions of those cashing in on grants not due to them, more deplorable; and places the onus on every law-abiding citizen to intensify the fight against fraud.

PARKING MANAGEMENT TENDER The City invites public comment on its proposed three-year parking management tender for the greater Cape Town area, from 1 to 31 March 2012. Details of the tender are available in the City’s specially commissioned report, which prescribes elements such as the method of payment, provision of handheld meters and parking management information and the basis of payment by the service provider to the City. The report also proposes the introduction of additional management areas and the provision for ‘after hours’ parking in selected areas. Copies of the report are available at all subcouncil offices and City libraries for viewing purposes only. The relevant street maps are attached. The report can also be accessed via the following link on the City of Cape Town website: www.capetown.gov.za/parkingtender2012 All interested and affected parties are invited to submit their written comments via the following channels: FAX: E-MAIL: ONLINE: BY HAND:

Make the most of your battery

General Motors reports huge loss

Maintenance tips for extended battery life . Regularly clean the battery container and terminals . Make sure vent caps are tight to prevent water or baking soda from entering cells . Apply baking soda to any corrosion and rinse cover with water . Check your battery’s electrolyte level before charging, it should be at the bottom of the vent splash band: -Electrolyte level low? Add distilled water to bring level to the bottom of the vent walls. -Distilled water not available? Use a good drinking water. It’s better than adding nothing; otherwise the battery plates will dry out and the battery could lose its capacity. Recharging guidelines for maximum life 1. Recharge immediately after each use 2. Use battery charger matched to the battery’s size 3. Do not overcharge; an automatic charger that turns off or on with a timer is your best bet 4. Always slow charge a deep cycle battery; never fast charge or boost charge it 5. A 10-12 hour charge with the appropriate charger at the correct amp rate will usually bring your battery to a full state of charge.

GENERAL Motors Europe was hit by an operating loss of $747-million (R5,7 billion) in 2011 despite its parent US division returning a record profit. GM, in 2009, had considered selling the division which makes Opel and Vauxhall cars in Germany and Britain but changed its mind. The 2011 losses again raise the spectre of an uncertain future. The figures fall well short of the R15-billion loss of 2010 but dashed hopes that the unit would turn the corner to profitability. Strong North American sales pushed overall GM earnings to R58-billion. Chief executive Dan Akerson said in Detroit that they had been winning market share around the globe but agreed that sales in Europe and South America were below expectations. The European unit has been in profit only once in the past 12 years – 2006. In 2011 GM shut a car factory in the Belgian city of Antwerp and slashed its workforce of 48 000 by 8000. – Wheels 24.

Fuel saving tips REDUCING your vehicle’s fuel consumption is better for the environment and better for your pocket. In recessionary times such as these, retailers across the board are cutting prices in order to encourage consumers to buy. Not so with fuel prices. Petrol is not seen as a discretionary purchase and therefore price depends more on availability of the product than the availability of cash to the consumer. However, there are steps you can take to reduce the amount you spend on fuel and we have put together our top 10 tips to help you achieve this. You may be surprised at just how much you can save by implementing even some of the tips set out below. 1.Tighten up! One of the simplest fuel saving tips is to ensure that the fuel cap on your car is fully tightened. This reduces possible evaporation of fuel caused by the outside air temperature and the heating of the vehicle itself. “Petrol, especially higher octane fuels, tends to vaporize and evaporate readily if exposed to the atmosphere. When securely in place, a gas cap helps keep the gas tank under pressure and reduce the evaporation process” [source: ehow] 2.On your marks! If you are one of those people who likes to be first out of the starting blocks at the traffic lights then it may be costing you. Speeding, accelerating and braking hard can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 33% (Environmental Protection Agency [source: fueleconomy.gov]). Where possible and practical, accelerate and brake gently, this will minimise the demands on the engine and therefore the fuel consumed. 3.Jettison the cargo! Weight is the single most important factor effecting fuel consumption and also one of the easiest to address. Regularly empty your car as most people carry a lot of excess cargo (golf clubs, kids strollers etc.) that will be costing them on fuel. “For every extra 100 pounds you carry in your vehicle, you reduce gas mileage and fuel economy by roughly 2%” [source: dailyfueleconomytip.com] 4.Tired tyres? A significant amount of the energy required for propelling a car forward is used in overcoming the ‘rolling resistance’ of the tyres. The resistance that occurs when a tyre moves forward is due mostly to the deformation of the object (the flattening effect at the bottom of the tyre where it has contact with the road). The recommended tyre pressure for your car will have been exactly calculated to take this into account and ensure the least ‘rolling resistance’ and therefore greatest fuel efficiency. Tyre pressure should be checked at least once a month and at the start of a journey, as the heating

up of the tires will alter the pressure. “25% too low tyre pressure increases rolling resistance by 10% and fuel consumption by 2%” [source: ecodrive.org] 5.Slow down: Most drivers really don’t like to be told to slow down but aside from the safety aspect, adhering to the speed limit rather than exceeding it, will save you on fuel consumption “gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 100km/h. You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 100km/h is like paying an additional R2 per gallon.” [source: fueleconomy.gov] 6.Don’t be a drag! Any form of drag is going to increase your fuel consumption considerably. So anything from driving with a roof rack to driving at speed with windows open will have this effect. If you don’t need the roof rack for a journey – don’t use it. If you can open your window a little less then do so too. Using the example of a ski box on the roof of a car “at a speed of 120km/h, it can cause at least a 20% increase in the amount of fuel consumption”. [source: ecodrive.org] 7.Be smart with the air-con: Air conditioning (and in-car heaters) have a significant impact on fuel consumption, particularly if used when the vehicle is idling in traffic. This is probably when you most need to cool the air but try to resist and you can use your savings to buy a nice cold drink when you reach your destination! However, when driving on the open road using the air-con can be more efficient than opening a window, as an open window causes drag which may have an even greater impact on fuel consumption. 8.DIY fuel: There are kits you can buy which will enable you to process your own bio-diesel from waste vegetable or animal fat (even oil which has been used for frying food). You need to be fairly committed to go down this route as it can be time consuming but worth it financially if you think you can do it. When running a car on bio-diesel it will smell like the type of oil used to power it so prepare for some unusual fast-food cravings! 9.Change your car: This may seem a bit excessive but if your car has very poor fuel economy the best thing for you to do in the long run is to upgrade. The long-term savings should outweigh the short-term cost. 10.Stay tuned: The more efficiently an engine runs, the less fuel it will consume. The larger the capacity of your engine, the more effective any tuning will be. “A poorly tuned engine can use up to 50% more fuel and produces up to 50% more emissions than one that is running properly” [source: eartheasy.com] - Drivers.com

Cycling in Cape Town THE City of Cape Town urges all road users to exercise caution and common sense on the city’s roads, especially during a time of year when greater numbers of cyclists will be on our roads in the build-up to the iconic Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour in March. Along with the increase of cyclists, comes an unfortunate increase in the number of accidents involving cyclists. There are ten ways for cyclists to stay safe on Cape Town’s roads: • Be visible. Cyclists can help by wearing high-visibility clothing (orange, neon green or pink), flashing LED belts and trouser-straps – and by riding 1.5m in from the road edge. • Obey the rules of the road: Cyclists should stop at stop signs and obey road signage like all other road users. • Be assertive but polite. Show other road-users respect and they will show respect to cyclists. • Pay attention at intersections and traffic circles – particularly when you are travelling straight onwards and

the vehicles are turning left. At stop streets and traffic lights, come to a halt slightly in front of stationary vehicles. • Be predictable. Indicate where you intend to go. • Ride in single file and wear a helmet. It’s against the law to ride without a helmet. • Don’t deliberately swerve your bike from side to side, and always keep at least one hand on the handlebars. • Light up your bike: white lights/ reflectors on the front; red lights/reflectors on the back. • Be prepared: Carry water, a pump, a patch kit and identification. Check your bike for obvious mechanical problems every time you leave for a ride. • Report dangerous and reckless driving. “City Traffic Officers will be focusing on the behaviour of both cyclists and motorists and where the law is broken, fines will be issued.” Smith said.

Deep-freeze driver survives after months in the snow THOMAS BORCHERT

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A Swedish man has been found alive inside a car that was hidden for two months in deep snow in subzero temperatures. He survived on nothing but snow. The man was stranded in the car on December 19, according to the Vasterbotten Courier newspaper, and spent the time in a sleeping bag in the car. He was found off a remote forest road after passers-by on snowmobiles raised the alarm. They had thought they’d found a car wreck but when they scraped away snow from the windows saw weak movement inside. Temperatures in the north of Sweden have dropped to -30C in recent weeks. Police said the absence of any disturbance around the car made the survivor’s account credible. He is being treated in hospital where his condition was described as “well, under the circumstances.” In other reports, the police said the man was “nothing but skin and bone”. His car was covered in snow by a storm in December and that particular road, a small road

outside the city, had not been ploughed since then. The man had not been reported as missing. The BBC reported the temperature in the area had recently dropped to -22F (-30C). A rescue team member told regional daily Vasterbottens-Kuriren, which broke the news: “It’s just incredible that he’s alive considering that he had no food, but also since it’s been really cold since Christmas.” Ebbe Nyberg, duty officer at the Umea police, said police saw no reason to doubt that the man had been stuck in the car for a very long time. “We would not make something like this up. The rescue services were on site too and saw the same as us.” Doctors at the hospital said humans would normally be able to survive for about four weeks without food. Besides eating snow, the man probably survived by going into a dormant-like state, physician Stefan Branth said. “A bit like a bear that hibernates. Humans can do that,” he said. “He probably had a body temperature of around 31C, which the body adjusted to. Due to the low temperature, not much energy was used up.” – Wheels 24.

Merc gets smart with iPad sales MERCEDES-BENZ UK has launched an iPad brochure application – an interactive experience that complements traditional printed brochures with a more engaging way to experience the C-Class Coupe. The automaker says this new approach to customer engagement, with all brochure and price list information combined, enables prospective buyers to experience more of the C-Class Coupé design, performance and technology. The app carries a wealth of content, Mercedes adds, and uses the iPad’s capabilities to entertain as much as inform. The app, unlike a printed brochure, can also be updated. David George, Mercedes-Benz Cars’ marketing director in the UK, said: “We live in a culture that’s almost always online and is used to rich media experiences. Our new app really brings the C-Class Coupé to life.” The model lines section shows off the new car while letting the user compare all engine and trim combinations from the Sport to the C63 AMG. A slider function compares details from three angles; there’s an image gallery and a driving video for each variant; a configurator displays the

exterior and interior choices. Explaining features such as the cars’ “intelligent” light system, for instance, become easy with video and images, and the interactive part of the app is split into three: Design, Performance, Technology. Each section has three or four topics to explore: . Design supplies information on the sunroof, compares model lines and offers the configurator. . Performance explores engine options, the dynamic handling package and BlueEFFICIENCY – fuel-saving technology ’s standard on every car. . Technology looks at multimedia, safety features and the driving assistance package and demonstrates the lights system . The “read more” section has all the information of the printed brochure and there’s a GPS-assisted “find a dealer” function. The app is available from the iTunes APP store or through the Mercedes-Benz UK public website. South Africa does not have a similar app, but why not download it anyway? The data on UK products is very similar to that available here. And, we’re told, Merc SA is looking into the project for local distribution – Wheels 24

A boost for entrepreneurs IN AN effort to boost the level of entrepreneurship in South Africa, Sanlam and Business Partners have announced the launch of the 2012 Sanlam/Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year competition. This initiative, widely considered to be the pre-eminent competition of its kind in South Africa, has served as a springboard for past finalists and winners. “Besides the chance to win prizes with a total value of R1 345 000, which includes cash prizes of R 200 000, finalists and winners are able to expand their networks and receive invaluable exposure for their businesses,” says Nimo Naidoo, project manager at Sanlam/Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year. She says one of the key aims of the competition is to profile the successes and significant job creation achievements of entre-

preneurs from across South Africa. “We believe this plays a crucial role in elevating the standard of entrepreneurial activity, as well as fostering a national entrepreneurial spirit that directly translates into job creation.” She says recent studies show that South Africa is lagging behind many of its competitors when it comes to entrepreneurship. According to the 2010 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, South Africa ranked 27th out of 59 countries on entrepreneurial activity, with its Total Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) rate of 8.9% below the average (11.9%) of all participating countries. “Both government and the private sector need to do more when it comes to funding and fostering an entrepreneurial culture in our country in order

to address our unemployment cycle,” says Naidoo. The competition is open to entrepreneurs from all industries and for businesses of any size. The 2012 competition will also feature a series of fourteen national workshops in six of South Africa’s provinces where crucial entrepreneurial skills will be provided to attending business owners. Entrepreneurs interested in entering can download entry forms online at www.eoy.co.za as well as interact with fellow entrepreneurs and entrants on the 2012 Sanlam/Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year competition’s social media platforms on https://twitter.com/ #!/EOY_SA and http://www.facebook.com/pages/ EOY/330219423683690. The closing date for the competition is Saturday 16 June.

A total of 18 657 BMW and MINI vehicles were sold last year in the region’s 14 import markets and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) accounted for more than 47% of

deliveries. The best-selling vehicles in the region in 2011 were large model series such as the BMW 7 Series (4 511 units), the 5 Series (4 286), the X5 (2 620) and the X6 (2 510). Abu Dhabi Motors was also one of the Rolls-Royce’s top 10 dealers in the world in 2011. The new showroom was officially opened by Ian Robertson, member of the board of manage-

ment of BMW AG and former MD of BMW SA, Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, national security advisor and vice-chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, and Arno Husselmann, general manager of Abu Dhabi Motors, at an exclusive event attended by more than 1 000 guests, including BMW’s director of BMW Group Design, Adrian Van Hooydonk. – Wheels 24

Prepare for the intelligent web LAST Thursday, Cape Town celebrated the launch of LeeRoy Chetty’s book Imagining Web 3.0 at the Book Lounge. The research for Imagining Web 3.0 formed part of Chetty’s Masters degree in Media Studies from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

A two-time recipient of the National Research Fund Scholarship, Chetty is currently completing his PhD through UCT and a degree in Economics with Unisa. He is employed by the Department of International Relations and Co-operation in the South African government, in public diplomacy.

“In Web 3.0 we will see content being refined and analysed by the internet itself. I foresee an internet which has the power to learn, intuit and decide about the information it contains. The experience for both content providers and users will be beyond anything we have seen before,” Chetty explained.

INTERESTING: Children enjoy a lesson at the Cape Town Science Centre.

Photo: Supplied

New life for Cape Town Science Centre THE Cape Town Science Centre, previously known as the MTN Science Centre and operating out of Canal Walk shopping centre, has an exciting new home in Observatory. Being close to public transport and arterial routes, schools and the general public will be able to visit the centre more easily. What is new and fresh about the centre is the introduction of six partners that will now be based within the Cape Town Science Cen-

tre’s building. Each partner contributes in a unique way to ensure that this new venue becomes a hub of educational opportunities for the youth of the Western Cape. The partners include Career Planet, SA Teen Entrepreneur, Sangari SA (Formula 1 in Schools), Kiddiwinks (LEGO educational and robotics), Living Maths and Soundhouse (Music and sound technology).

These partners have an innovative approach and instill a joy for learning through their educational activities. Opportunities and activities range from robotics, maths and science homework supervision sessions, curriculum based science workshops, workshops on how to become an entrepreneur, career guidance, learning about technology through music and visaversa, using LEGO to learn about levers and

gears and other cool technology, access to exciting visiting scientists and speakers and many more activities. Educators will be able to learn more about not only what the Science Centre will offer but also what the partners have on offer to empower learners and educators. For more information call (021) 300 3200 alternatively phone 083 276 9508 or to carmen@ctsc.org.za.

Listen and look up AN ecstatic Lorenzo Schaffers from Grassy Park was the winner of a brand new Kia Rio in the 94.5 Kfm Take 40 Competition on Saturday 11 February, and was given the ride of his life in a helicopter. Kfm listeners were told to look out for a helicopter flying around Cape Town, which was due to pick up the lucky win-

ner. The Kfm SMS line was flooded with messages from excited listeners hoping that the car would be theirs. Lorenzo was completely shocked when it landed near his home and the 94.5Kfm Ground Patrol Team knocked on his door to collect him. “When I heard the helicopter I went outside. I was jumping and I promise you I knew inside of me that the car was mine!” exclaimed a very excited Lorenzo. The whole community of Grassy Park streamed to the landing-zone to witness the helicopter and Lorenzo’s flight. He was flown from his home to the Kia dealership in Tableview to collect his car. Mark Pilgrim, host of the Kia Take 40 was waiting at the dealership to hand Lorenzo his keys. “94.5 Kfm love to reward their listeners. We’re glad we can make an impact in their lives and share these great prizes with them,” said programme manager Ian Bredenkamp.

GOTCHA!: Kfm winner Lorenzo Schaffers and his daughter Kim is picked up by heli copter, along with the Ground Patrol and David Sieff from Kia. Photos: Supplied

Cape musos on brink of stardom TWO young Cape Town musicians will find out this week if they will be performing on the same stage as multi-award winning, platinum selling R&B star Usher Raymond, when he visits South Africa next month. Busi M and Nonku Phiri are finalists in the Hansa Festival of Legends competition, which seeks to find one artist from each province to perform as an opening act at Raymond’s concert. Busisiwe Madlala, better known by her stage monicker Busi M, was born in the Cape’s historic township of Langa and is a final-year student at the University of the Western Cape where she is completing a BA in Women and Gender studies. Madlala’s music can best be described as dance, but the 24-year-old has an eclectic background when it comes to her art.

“During my school days I sung in a jazz band and was also involved in cabaret,” said Madlala. “After school I considered studying music but decided to rather focus on becoming qualified in something else, which could earn me an income while I pursued my musical ambitions,” Busi says. The second finalist is 23-year-old Nonku Phiri, an R&B soul artist who describes herself as a “fun-loving thrill seeker”. As the daughter of African jazz legend Ray Phiri, Nonku Phiri has music flowing in her veins. However, Phiri says that she had a late start as a performer. “I started performing at 17. I was a late bloomer; the music only started coming when I was about 20 and I started doing my own writing,” says Phiri. She adds that she does not discuss music with her father. “We usually don’t even dis-

cuss my music – to me he is just my dad.” Madlala and Phiri may be unknown to most Capetonians, but both artists have already made strides toward stardom in their careers. Busi M performed as a back-up singer for South African songbird Simphiwe Dana at the 2011 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, and has also sung for gospel project Joyous Celebration. While Phiri has completed collaborations and projects with Crazy White Boy, performed with Tumi from Tumi and the Volume and opened for Charlie Tuna from Jurassic 5. Voting in the competition closes on Tuesday 21 February and votes can be cast at hansapilsener.co.za, or by dialling *120*793# on a cellphone. Usher Raymond will be performing at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg, on Saturday 10 March.

DRESSED UP: Performers with their colourful costumes ready to shake some feathers on 24 March.

Get ready to rumba! LILLIAN AMOS

GET ready to be dazzled and mesmerized by colourful and glittery costumes on the Fanwalk at this year’s third annual Cape Town Carnival. People’s Post got a sneak preview of what the Mother City will look like on Saturday 24 March at the events media launch at the Casablanca Club in the Waterfront. Organisers of the carnival say it will be a spectacular celebration of art, music and dance. Street performers start taking on the Fanwalk at 17:00 and the parade will officially open at 20:00. The venue has been moved from Long Street to the popular Fanwalk because crowds were increasing and the popular street could not hold all visitors. “Due to the overwhelming support last year, we had no choice but to move to a larger space to accommodate the continually growing audience,” says Jay Douwes, CEO of the Cape Town Carnival. The theme for this year is “Cape to Cairo”, and the rich history and diversity of the entire continent will be celebrated. “The Cape to Cairo theme for this year’s carnival not only celebrates the rich art, music, culture and heritage of the African continent, but also helps raise awareness around important issues like xenophobia,” says Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile. Sponsors for the Cape Town Carnival include The Department of Arts and Culture, the City of Cape Town, Mnet, DSTV, Provincial Government of the Western Cape, Media24 and Heart 104.9fm.

The minstrel season has come and gone TAURIQ HASSEN

THE minstrel season might have come and gone in a flash, but it produced many highs and lows, resulting in a glorious finale. People’s Post takes a look at the minstrel season that was. . The season got off to a positive start, when minstrel associations and leaders, negotiated terms with members of the Provincial Government and City of Cape Town. The article, “Minstrels work it out with City (11 October 2011)”, highlighted the meeting held between representatives from each party, which had an independent mediator in retired Constitutional Court judge, Kate O’Reagan. The negotiations dealt mainly with the return of the annual Cape Minstrel Carnival, which wends its way through the historic Bo-Kaap, as well as permission to hold the event on the second day of January from 2012 onwards. . Minstrel leaders remained optimistic

about the end-of-year celebrations – “Cape minstrel battle continues (1 November 2011),” – with Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille remaining adamant that she was “firmly committed to making the Cape Minstrel annual Carnival an event that all people of Cape Town can be proud of”. Later that month the two parties agreed that all minstrel leaders sign a code of conduct. The article, “The return of the minstrels (15 November 2011),” saw minstrels being given permission to march along their old routes, as well as hosting the “Tweede Nuwe Jaar” celebrations on 2 January. Word spread quickly about the old battleground being back on the cards, which prompted several minstrel troupes to up their game and give Cape Town a good show. . The season got off to a slow start, when the annual “Tweede Nuwe Jaar” celebrations started five hours later than scheduled. “And the beat goes on (17 January),” highlighted the slow start to the season, which saw 40 000 troupe members and 80 000 spec-

tators participating in the event. As the weeks went by, minstrel teams slugged it out on the Athlone and Vygieskraal Stadiums, competing in items such as Coon Song, Juvenile Combined Chorus, Adult Sentimental, Best Dress and a string of other singing and performance items. At the end of the day, there could only be one winner. . At Vygieskraal Stadium, the Fabulous Seawind Entertainers walked away as champions, ahead of the 25th Anniversary next year, bringing much excitement to one of Cape Town’s oldest troupes. They claimed 12 trophies in the build-up to their Highest Points trophy. In the Super League final held at Athlone Stadium – with most of the big names participating – defending champions Santam District Six Entertainers managed to successfully defend their title, walking away as “Carnival Kings”. The article, “Carnival Kings yet again (14 February)”, focused on the team’s 13 trophies that they won during the competition.

Steriwell provides hope Leave the rat race behind for animals in townships TERESA FISCHER

WHEN a three-year-old boy was killed by a pack of stray dogs at Sweet Home Farm in Philippi last year, it brought the issue of Cape Town’s overpopulation of animals into the spotlight. It was revealed that there are more than 230 000 stray dogs in the city and surrounding areas, although SPCA Chief Executive Allan Perrins said that the figure “sounds conservative”. In some townships, like Khayelitsha, the ratio between dogs and humans is believed to be as high as 3:1. About 40 000 dogs and cats are euthanised each month in shelters across South Africa, and yet the population is still increasing. With this in mind, many animal welfare organisations are urging PRECIOUS: Dogs resting after their sterilisations. the public to contribute towards Photo: Supplied sterilisation campaigns in poor areas. their pets and provides essential necessities One such campaign is Steriwell, an initia- these pet owners can ill afford, such as drinktive by Cape Town-based non-profit animal ing bowls, food, kennels, collars and anti-parwelfare group Aniwell, which operates in asitic treatments. “THERE are a lot of elderly gentlemen walking around Fish Hoek,” says René Lion-Cachet, there to feed the birds. “My wife is getting more boring by the day – since I bought her an iPad, I can’t get a word out of her – so I ignored her and went to sit next to this greyhaired gentlemen on a bench. I expected him to talk about his investments, but it turned out he is currently completely without abode...” People’s Post caught up with this wanderer, Piet Smuts, who was still sitting on the same bench at the beach later. “I love the place, I love when the trains come by,” he says, having taken a bit of convincing to share his story. He has been travelling for five months, leaving behind his restaurant in Gansbaai to go wherever he feels inclined – either on foot or using public transport. Sports buff ready for new post MELISSA LE ROUX

PASSION, dedication and an undying love for writing, is what drew the new sports journalist at People’s Post, Liam Moses (25), into the world of journalism. Born and bred in Thornton, this sports enthusiast always loved reading and writing, and thought that studying journalism would be a perfect opportunity to combine these two passions of his. “I’ve always loved sport, especially rugby. I took part in Judo, Karate, kickboxing and I played rugby in high school. I’ve always enjoyed writing about rugby more than I enjoyed playing the game,” he says. After completing his school career at both Pinelands Primary School and Pinelands High School, Moses pursued his aspiration of becoming a journalist. He received his diploma in journalism at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2010, and then landed a position at the Media24 Journalism Academy last year, where he was taught all about media, and spent the year at various publications within the group. “It’s basically a one year-long postgraduate internship programme where you spend some of the time in a classroom environment, learning from the best journalists in South Africa, and the rest of the time at publications in the group. “I spent time here at the People’s Post, then at Sport24.co.za and then at the City Press. I liked it so much here (at People’s Post) that I decided to come back,” he says. Even though Moses found it to be a

great learning opportunity, it was difficult for him to spend so much time away from his family and friends. Being the family man that Moses is, he especially loves spending time with his four-year-old sister and three-year-old niece. Moses’ life “basically revolves around sport” and if he is not seen lounging in front of the TV watching different types of sport, he can be found watching movies or listening to music. He also owns a guitar, but ironically, has no idea how to play it. With his new post as the sports journalist at People’s Post, Moses hopes to give readers “the quality, comprehensive sports coverage that they deserve”. And with confidence he says: “I have just started in the job, but I know that I will get better and better over time.”

Stormers under injury cloud LIAM MOSES

AN injury cloud has enveloped the Stormers ahead of their opening Super Rugby clash against the Hurricanes at Newlands this Saturday. No less than five of the side’s first team players have either been ruled out of the game or deemed unlikely to start, after picking up injuries over the past two weeks. Last week, the management team were hit by the news that tough lock Rynhardt Elstadt, who only returned from a long-term injury lay-off during the pre-season, had damaged ligaments in his knee and could be out for as long as three weeks. Elstadt was an integral part of the Stormers side that won the South African conference during the 2011 Super Rugby season, adding much-needed grit and physicality to a forward pack that has long been considered as one of the softest in South Africa. Elstadt’s place in the starting line-up will now be filled by either De Cock Steenkamp or youngster Eben Etzebeth, whose performances have become more

impressive with every game he plays. Nuggety hooker Deon Fourie was also ruled out of the match after he suffered a broken hand during a warm-up match against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth, on Saturday 11 February. Fourie may not have been the first choice hooker, as Tiaan Liebenberg was more likely to start, but the Stormers will miss his energetic performances. The stocky hooker has become one of the team’s most potent attacking weapons, especially in the last quarter of the game when his unexpected pace and explosive power can catch tired opponents off-guard and see him burst through half-gaps. The Stormers may be without his services for another five weeks. Other players who are in doubt for the season opener are Springbok centre Juan de Jongh, athletic loose-forward Nick Koster and diminutive utility-back Joe Pietersen. De Jongh took a knock to his jaw recently and could miss the game completely or start from the bench, meaning that Bok wing Bryan Habana or youngster JP du Plessis would have to step into the number 13 jersey. Habana started his professional ca-

reer at outside centre and impressed Stormers coach Alister Coetzee when he played there against the Kings Koster is in doubt due to a knee injury, but the return of first-choice eighthman Duane Vermeulen and the emergence of Nizaam Carr as an option will lessen the damage done by his unavailability. Pietersen is suffering from a hamstring strain and could also miss the match. Pietersen’s versatility makes him an important asset to the side. The Stormers have sufficient cover out wide and his loss should not be a major concern for Coetzee’s side. The injuries will further weaken a Stormers side that has already lost several first-team players to other rugby teams, both in South Africa and abroad. The Hurricanes suffered a similar exodus of talent and experience in the offseason. The Wellington side lost several first team players, including All Blacks Aaron Cruden, Andrew Hore, Hosea Gear, Ma’a Nonu and Piri Weepu. Despite the injuries, the Stormers should still be considered favourites to win the match, and a loss will be a setback to their Super Rugby ambitions this season.

MINE: Schalk Burger, captain of the Stormers, tries to wrestle the Pick ‘n Pay Challenge Trophy away from Cape Cobras captain Mark Boucher after the match end ed in a tie. The game, which is played each year in aid of charity, took place at Newlands Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Looking on is Malcolm Mycroft of sponsors Pick ‘n Pay. Photo: Peeter Heeger
