Young Men rise to centre stage TAURIQ HASSEN

IF the pressure of taking centre stage to perform at the annual Cape Malay Choir Board competitions was not enough, imagine doing so with a team mostly under the age of 25. This in an attempt to rewrite the history books. The Young Men Sporting Club’s successes this year included defending their Top Eight and Silver Fez honours, historically becoming the first team to have ever successfully defended both titles. To add to their honours, they won numerous first prizes in various categories and walked away as sectional winners, seeing six months of preparation come to the good. The Mitchell’s Plain-based outfit was initially established in 1938 in an area of District Six known as the “Dry Docks”, going by the name of “Jonge Mens Kultuur Klub”. As the years went on, the name changed to “Jonge Mens” and in the early ’50s, settled on the current name. Today, the team has 135 members, ageing between 15 and 75. They initially started with about 30 to 40 members. Abduraghmaan Morris, president and coach of the team, was delighted at the outcome of the competitions’ events. He

says, “We, as the older generation, are starting to hand over to the younger generation in order for this team to grow, because this is what the team is all about, focusing on handing over from generation to generation and building relationships.” With regards to defending their titles, Morris was quick to mention the “tough competition” during the competition this year, but relieved to note that a “very high standard” were maintained. “We worked very hard to improve on our performances of last year and we knew that we would have to top that to walk away as champions and indeed, that is what happened,” Morris delightedly explains. When asked about their winning formula, Morris explained that the right music and fresh performances were required, with heaps of hard work and dedication. “Lots of effort was required in preparation, some of the guys worked three to four times a week, just practising, and to me that was our winning formula, the dedication shown by the team,” Morris concluded. Young Men Sporting Club might have secured the major prizes in 2011 and 2012, but are already looking to make it three in a row.
