angsters are using the lure of easy money to trap residents and children in doing their dirty work. As a counter measure to police raids, gangsters pay locals to keep their illegal firearms and ammunition safe. Police confirm there is a marked increase in previously law abiding residents being arrested for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The most recent case saw a married couple arrested in Heideveld last week. A 40-year-old man and his 38-year-old wife are in custody after police found a 9mm Norinco firearm and an R4 rifle in their Goudini Street home. Illegal ammunition was also found and both firearms are registered to the State. The couple has since appeared in court on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and remain behind bars. A source close to the couple spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity. “I know them well. They do not belong to a gang, but they do know gangsters,” she says. “People around here often get approached to hide the weapons for a short while because the gangsters never leave their guns in one place for too long. They will pay you to keep it for them for about two weeks or so, but not longer than that.” Police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett warns that anyone found in possession
of arms will be dealt with harshly. “Whether you are a gangster or not, a crime is a crime and we will be coming down hard on anyone found in possession of illegal guns and ammunition,” he says. On average, police make 60 arrests for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in Manenberg every year, Bennett confirms. Children are not exempt from the gangsters’ predation. Metro Police officers recently on patrol in the area observed a suspicious-looking 13year-old boy walking down Thames Avenue. The teenager quickly entered a nearby house when he spotted the officers. While searching the suspect, officers found a Z88 9mm semi-automatic weapon strapped with tape to his chest. They also found nine rounds of ammunition and a cartridge. The minor was taken to the Manenberg Police Station in accordance with the Child Justice Act. Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security JP Smith says this alarming trend needs to be staunched. “We see it depicted in the local movie Four Corners and this particular case is a sad illustration of how gangs are using children as gun runners and hit men. I shudder to think what might have been the end result. I hope young people will receive the necessary assistance to turn them away from this kind of life,” Smith says.
