New crisis for victims of rape SUMMER JACOBS

RAPE survivors may soon face further dejection as a leading rape counselling centre trims down on staff. Several staff members from the Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust will be unemployed by the end of this month. They have however pledged to continue with their services as volunteers, for as long as possible. The retrenchment of 12 staff members at the organisation’s three counselling centres is the result of a number of factors, Kathleen Dey, the director of Rape Crisis, explains. “Over the last two years we have been experiencing difficulty with fundraising,” she says. “The government has decreased our funding by more than a third and the global economic recession has made other avenues hard to follow.” The centres, situated in Athlone, Khayelitsha and Observatory, will see the staff volunteering to “different degrees” – depending on their situation. “Some will be volunteering part-time and others full-time. We will continue in this manner hoping that the organisation will stabilise.” Rape Crisis will also be downsizing their operation costs by 70%. Two of their three 24-hour crisis lines will be closed and instead one centralised line will be used. Some of the 24-hour services will also be reduced to 12-hours. Nazma Hendricks, the operations manager of Rape Crisis, is one of the staff members who is being retrenched. She says for the public to lose this kind of service is going to take everything “a few steps back”. “Our aim is to improve services for rape survivors. We empower them by ensuring that someone is with them every step of the way– whether it be in court or at a med-

In your face

ical facility,” says Hendricks. “I worry that a restriction in our services will result in less rape survivors coming forward and speaking out.” Based at the Grassroots Educare Centre in Klipfontein Road, Hendricks says the office is one of the busiest because of its location. “On average we receive 15 new patients monthly and have about 50 counselling sessions with older patients,” she says. Despite the organisation’s dismal forecast, Hendricks says the dedication of staff and volunteers is commendable. “These are people who have a passion to help others and it is this passion which drives them to continue without payment,” she says. A rape survivor, who wishes to remain anonymous, says it would be a “great loss” if Rape Crisis ever had to close down. “Words cannot express how much I have been helped by this place. It was my safe haven for more than five years and I don’t know what I would have done without it,” she says. Referred to the centre by her doctor, she says when she first arrived she was made to feel safe and comfortable by the staff. “I became an introvert after my incident but through one-on-one counselling I felt safe enough to speak about what happened to me. I eventually joined the group counselling sessions and it was wonderful. I realised I was not alone,” she says. Considering the cost of counselling, she says she cannot begin to imagine how much all her sessions cost. “I would never have been able to afford it if I hadn't received it at the centre. I was very fortunate to get it for free. It changed my outlook on life and today I am a better person because of it. “I don’t think people understand how many distressed women are in need of this place. I know because I was one of them.” Donors wishing to make enquiries about the organisation and its projects can contact Dey at kath@rapecrisis.org.za.

Going for gold Dear reader,

Seeing Team South Africa during the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games filled me with immense pride and anticipation. Cameron van der Burgh winning our first gold medal and smashing the world record of the world 100m breaststroke was the cherry on the cake. Like most South Africans, and especially Capetonians, I naturally back a winner. People’s behaviour and responses to sport reveals a lot about themselves. We remain glued to our TV screens when our side is winning, but heaven forbid when the opposite applies. We leave the stadium early, change the TV channel when our side is losing or take tea breaks to avoid witnessing our team’s agonising defeat. We yell, or throw the remote on the floor. Some extremists drown their sorrows with booze (not I) and some let rip with the most colourful Cape Flats vernacular (not I). Van der Burgh’s our golden man right now and we’re high on his victory, just two days into the Olympics. His win made up for the bitter disappointment at our hockey, volleyball, rowing, soccer and other defeats so far. But it’s still early days for our Olympic hopefuls. Not so for Stormers, for whom the final whistle has blown. Sadly, their die-hard supporters gave up and stopped cheering with the same fervour displayed at the start of the game when Stormers began trailing in the Super Rugby semi-final at Newlands on Saturday. This was when the Stormers needed their

supporters most. We can learn a lot from fighting ’til the bitter end – the Manchester United-Ajax game is a case in point. The Red Devils did not accept defeat, despite being 1-0 behind. They gave their all until the dying minute of extra time, when they scored the equalising goal. On the topic of backing winners, during my recent vacation, a female friend and I went to Club Mykonos for a girls’ getaway. We wanted to escape our stressors, men and children and ended up talking about our stressors, men and children. At one point, we made a pact to cease discussing our men, but that was shortlived. We concluded that men are useful for killing spiders, changing light bulbs, driving, carrying the groceries from the boot to the house, looking after the kids, ensuring our safety and braaing. We did enjoy some male company at the resort; in the form of “Tom”, the resident blackand-white kitty whom we fed top quality tuna and sardines. In return, Tom rewarded us with loyalty and love. By the time we left, I had learnt a lot about myelf. I can be annoying, losing myself completely in a book and whipping out my laptop even while on holiday for work. We contented ourselves with eating out often and ended up disillusioned with most of the food. Despite all that, we had a great time. ’Til next time, go well! Kewtown fears gang payback SUMMER JACOBS

THE Kewtown community is bracing itself for war after yet another life is claimed by the deadly grip of gangsterism. Tension filled the streets as people went in their droves to the kifayat (Muslim funeral) of Munier Cox last Tuesday. Cox (20), a member of the Americans, died after being shot in the back of the head last Monday. He was playing soccer on a pitch between Block One and Block Two in Dr Abdurahman Avenue when he was gunned down by an unknown man. Two men, aged 16 and 20, were arrested for the murder on the same day and are currently in police custody. The murder is believed to be related to the gang rivalry between the Americans and the Sexy Boys. The following day dozens of pairs of eyes were fixed on the Cox residence anticipating a peek of the body of the latest victim of gang violence. Residents say people know more than they let on but no-one would dare to speak out. “There is a lot of speculation about the death of this young man,” a Kewtown senior tells People’s Post . “Among the speculators are those who know more than they let on but because they fear for their lives. They’ll never say a word,” he says. Another resident says the place is “far too quiet” for her liking. “It feels like this is the calm before the storm and we all know when the calm is over a lot of people are going to get hurt,” she says. Turmoil will erupt when the month of Ramadan is over, a local says.

ONE MORE STATISTIC: The Kewtown community at the funeral of Munier Cox, a member of the Americans. “I think gangs are trying to respect that this is a holy month for Muslims. But I don’t know how long it will last. Once the fasting is over there is bound to be bloodshed.” Constable Zeta Norman from Athlone police says so far everything is in order. “The murder is currently under investigation but we can confirm that it is gang related,” she says. Norman adds that police are doing inten-

sive patrols in the area but says this does not mean they are neglecting the rest of Athlone. “No area is regarded as more important than another,” she explains. “We are busy with intensive patrols all over Athlone and will continue to do so for as long as is needed.” A resident from the area says she has peace of mind with the regular patrolling of police. “We are all vigilant but it is nice to see the

On Thursday at about 19:00, two men aged 23 and 26, and a 17-year-old, were standing in Red River Road when three men opened fire. The 17-year-old, who is mentally handicapped, was wounded in the stomach and the other two victims were wounded in their legs. The police followed up on information which led to the arrest of 28 suspects. All were brought in for questioning. Residue tests will be performed on these suspects to eliminate innocent parties. A case of attempted murder has been opened and the motive of the shooting is be-

ing investigated. Anyone with information regarding this incident can contact the Manenberg police station on 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop on 086 001 0111. In another incident, an armed robbery took place in Gatesville. Last Tuesday at 10:00, a 21-year-old driver of a hospital in Gatesville was sitting in a vehicle in the parking area. He was waiting for his colleague to come before continuing their normal routine of work. After writing up documentation, he got out of the vehicle to place it at the back section with his other personal belongings.

Makeover magic for Leliebloem SUMMER JACOBS AND LAILA MAJIET

JOYOUS pandemonium ensued at the unveiling of the new Leliebloem House. The Leliebloem Extreme Makeover, which ran from Friday to Sunday, has been a major success. Tears of joy, gasps of awe and the sound of delighted children screaming with excitement was the scene which unfolded after three days of hard work. The Leliebloem Child and Youth Care Centre, based in Crawford, teamed with Heart 104.9FM, local non-profit organisation Newkidz on the Block and 1 200 volunteers to give the centre’s 84 children a comfortable place to live. Fresh paint, new gutters, an upgraded playground, a new vegetable garden, blinds, curtains, beds, bedding, and a fresh roof are just some of the new additions. Liza Rossouw, marketer and fundraiser for Leliebloem, says the project has been much bigger than she anticipated.

“Hearing the children shouting with joy is all I wanted. A beautiful home is all I wanted to give them,” says an emotional Rossouw. Volunteer Melany Bam says everybody is needed to make a difference. “This is an opportunity for me to show my six-year-old daughter the need to help others,” she says. Heart104.9 sports anchor Nick Feinberg and his son also volunteered. He says: “I have a soft spot for children who are in need. It gives me the greatest of pleasure to help out. I brought my son with me and tried to explain to him the importance of giving to the less fortunate.” Charne Jacobs says it brings her joy to do good for others. “I started volunteering last year and I always try to offer my time to Newkidz projects. We need to remember that we only have now, as we don’t know what the future holds so it’s always good to give of your time,” she says. “So a thousand thank-yous to everybody that has been involved in making this project a success.”

Power struggle hits Manenberg OVER 400 people from Manenberg took to the streets on Monday in protest of the Proudly Manenberg leadership.

Protesters picketed at the organisation’s Manenberg Waterfront offices in a bid to oust leader Mario Wanza and other executive members. The organisation has come under fire for “failing the people of Manenberg” after government terminated its contract as the implementing agent of the Community Work Programme. The project is an employment safety net providing access to a minimum level of regular work on an ongoing basis for those in need. Proudly Manenberg chairman Mario Wanza says: “About 200 of our members marched to Parliament on Thursday to dispute the termination of our contract as this move had divided our organisation and the Manenberg community.” Following the loss of the contract, five of the group’s coordinators were expelled as they had been campaigning with the community in a bid take ownership of the NPO. Glenda Gain, one of the five expelled on 19 July, says no reason had been given. “At a recent meeting, members passed a vote of no confidence against the executive of

the organisation. Wanza has failed the community and I do not really want to go into detail about the matter. I was expelled without a hearing,” she says. Wanza says members had been expelled for campaigning outside the group’s structures. “Members were expelled for discrediting the leadership of Proudly Manenberg. Instead of addressing their concerns to us, they went to the community,” he says. However, Marwaan Jumah, who was also expelled, says leadership failed the community after it lost the CWP contract. “We showed dissatisfaction with the leaders and office bearers. Members passed a vote of no confidence against the leaders, but this was disregarded. Leaders within the organisation say we are campaigning against them, but truth is the organisation’s name has already been tarnished and now the community is trying to take the organisation back,” he says. Gain says the community must own the NPO. “Wanza doesn’t even live here in Manenberg,” she says. However Wanza counters this, saying: ”I have lived in Manenberg from the age of two until I was 29 years old. I moved out, but am living in the area again.” In an open letter to Zuma, Wanza says: “The CWP complements and strengthens our work which creates the social safety net in building our community. It provides additional capacity and resources in building a new Manenberg. The CWP – at two days work per week – puts a plaster on a wound and much more needs to be done as a community to bring about change.” Wanza says a letter tabled at a meeting with Proudly Manenberg on 17 July states: “The institution will not be able to meet the service delivery levels and compliance as laid down by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Therefore, after consultation with all stakeholders, we have no alternative as to terminate the services of Proudly Manenberg.” Wanza says they will lay a case against President Jacob Zuma.

Smoke signals

THE Western Cape is burning. Election promises have been found wanting in Mitchell’s Plain, Philippi, Manenberg, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, Grabouw and Botrivier. The hourglass of patience tested, the people of this province have stopped asking and waiting for government to honour these promises. It is, after all, 18 years into South Africa’s democracy. The time is now for the government to step up and deliver. Voters have taken to the streets in droves throughout the province to protest poor or non-existent service delivery and education. In the aftermath, the streets are littered with bricks and the debris of overturned trash cans, damaged street lamp poles, the charred remains of tyres and the notorious peak-hour traffic has been diverted from major roads. The N2 and Sir Lowry’s Pass have been closed to traffic during the protests. Instead of listening – and acting upon the pleas of the people – the government has responded with brute force. Their answer? Some protesters were arrested and hurt during skirmishes with the police. Outraged protesters were quietened with tear gas, rubber bullets and a water cannon. Setting alight public facilities such as schools must be frowned upon. Other ratepayers may have little empathy for such actions, but they may not be the ones adversely affected by the failures of government to provide basic services. It makes little sense to damage infrastructure and government property – meant for use by the people. Especially in view thereof that, nearly two decades later, attempts by the democratically-elected government remain sterile in addressing basic needs. Harking to the media visuals of the height of anti-apartheid protests, the city aflame resembles the burning hopes of many. Or, perhaps, their hopes have regressed into ashes.

Your SMSes

Driving fast kills and damages THE killing on our tar surfaces just goes up and up. Govermental bodies change the law from culpable homicide to murder in cases of tragic accidents. We hold blitzes and roadblocks on highways and byways and yet the killings on the roads still go up, causing grief to victim’s families. Now a new measure is in place to fine and take motorists’ cellphones because maybe these cellphone conversations while driving is the cause of death and destruction on the roads. Cameras are placed all over to monitor, but the death and carnage carry on. The next plan is to make it law that two drivers must be in vehicles doing long distance. I conclude that the one driver will sleep and the other one drives. When the takeover at the driver’s seat takes place we have a fresh vibrant

driver who can push his/her foot hard on the pedal. I am so scared to use the word “speed” because every time a member of the public states or suggests that “speed kills”, this real killer on the road is not being addressed by being reduced. At every major accident where people have been killed the cause was drivers driving too fast. How do we stop this? By bringing down the “speed limit”. Those who have the power to do so should note the quote by Arnold Bennett: “Any change, even for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.” Please listen and do what you know is the solution so you can conform to the Spanish proverb: “A wise man changes his mind, a fool never will.” KEITH ALFRED ADOLPH BLAKE

Kudos to the People’s Post team I HAVE known (of) People’s Post for many years, but confess I have never been an avid reader until recently. I particularly enjoyed your column on Mandela Day and District Six last week and I told myself I won’t be missing any of your future editions. This week I read your column “Remember the spirit” focusing on the (Muslim) holy month of Ramadan. I found the piece informative and well-written. Sometimes it is very easy for people and many readers in general to simply turn to the

next page when they see a topic that is not in their interest or directly affecting their lives and move to the sport or news page. I must say I admire your ability to make current but over-covered topics interesting to read. Mandela Day and Ramadan are topics we are bombarded (with) by the daily mainstream (media) all day and to read anything about them in a weekly becomes taboo. Please keep up about the good work and congratulations to the entire team. SIVUYILE MBAMBATO

. I personally feel Vanguard Drive should remain and not change because it is a well-known name to all in South Africa. Please don’t change it. It is also a land mark. . Why doesn’t government use the money to improve our housing and health system? Now they want to waste the taxpayers’ money to change street names – the changing of a street will not help the poor. . With regard to the street name changes: why in heaven’s name would government need to change street names? It is a waste of money! People need food and houses. . Why spend money on changing road names? They should utilise the money for something else. Also, why are they spending so much money on the Nantes in Bridgetown? That money could be used to build many houses for the lower income people. . I think Summer Jacobs is an excellent journalist. Keep up the good writing. You will still go far. . Why are there asinine “comedy” shows on SABC3 on Mondays nights? Why do they make us wait until after 22.00 for an intelligent programme like CSI? Maggie James . Easy off Bang 2 removes mould from walls. . Is the pet registration cut-off date 31 July or 31 August? Both dates are shown in the article in People’s Post of 24 July. People’s Post apologises for the error. The correct date is Friday 31 August. . Is the campaign to register your pet a big joke? Rather register drug lords and gangsters. The campaign will never work what with lazy officials in a dysfunctional system.

FIND OUT AND SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS TOO I can't go on without thanking Dr. Sheik Abdul Kariem for the work he did for me. My friend who had been helped directed me to him, so I met him concerning the voices I was hearing at night and the witchcraft that was possessing my whole family. He made me understand why I had them, because I thought I was bad luck, but after meeting him I got to understand that it was the power of the bad spirits that were chasing me. He removed it and solved the problem I never thought could be solved and now I am happy. Call Dr. Sheik Abdul Kariem for help 021 705 5623/07 2 243 9136 5th Ave, Grassy Park (opp. Nando's)

Fest to surf into Guinness records MUIZENBERG will be awash with surfers who will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most surfers riding the same wave. The event, hosted during the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival, will take place at Surfers Corner on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 September. The fifth annual edition of this popular festival will again harness the interest surrounding the Guinness World Records to promote sustainable lifestyle choices by featuring competitive and fun events in the ocean and on the beach. A host of exhibitions, demonstra-

tions and talks on environmental issues will take place over the two days. Paul Botha, from organisers Kahuna Promotions, says the festival has grown into one of the biggest surfingrelated events since the first record attempt in 2007. “Since 2006, when 73 surfers were recorded on the same wave, the festival has become one of the surfing world’s biggest mass participation events,” says Botha. “This year we’re expecting even more people to participate in and watch events such as longboard and grom surfing, SUP and surfski races, touch rugby and volleyball tourna-

ments, along with plenty of activities for children.” There will also be give-aways, sticker-showers, beach cleanups, raffles and fundraising. The fiesta ends with a party featuring a live band and a hilarious auction. Rated by National Geographic as one of the top 20 beach towns in the world Muizenberg is the ideal venue for the festival. It is considered the birthplace of surfing in South Africa and features a pristine 20km fine white beach, gentle rollers and warm water. Visit www.kahunasurf.co.za or 2 kahunasurf@mweb.co.za.

Kicking and punching for SA LIAM MOSES

FOUR dedicated young Hanover Park karateka will showcase their talents at the Reunion – an island east of Madagascar – in September. The four karate kids were selected to represent the national team after impressing selectors at the Kyokushinkai National Championships in Port Elizabeth last month. At the tournament Keagan Daniels, Najmunesa Jacobs, Megan Arends and Naasik Kamish all won their respective divisions. The four were among the more than 500 karate practitioners from across SA at nationals, held at the Nelson Mandela Metropole University. Their achievement of being selected to wear the green and gold is even more impressive when their circumstances are taken into account. Sensei Deen Daniels, head instructor of the Hanover Park and Ruyterwacht Kyokushin Karate dojos, says the students overcame several challenges. “These kids are at risk all the time. They have to walk through the flats to get to club. There is the odd chance they might be walking when the gangs are doing their thing,” says Daniels. “So I think in that regards it is quite a special achievement. They have the option of doing this or succumbing to peer pressure – they choose to do this.” They train in the hall of Crystal High School at least twice a week and also at a venue in Ruyterwacht. “I pick up some of the students, but I can’t pick them all up. We finish at 20:00 when Hanover Park is at its quietest. Even ourselves inside this building . . . you never quite feel secure.” The school does not have gates or fencing as it was stolen. In spite of these difficulties, Keagan won his division at the tourna-

JACK OF ALL TRADES: Rylands resident Muzammil Sheik has been selected to represent the South African under-16 hockey team after representing Western Province as a goalkeeper at the inter-provincial tournament in Pietermaritzburg during the June school holidays. The 15-year-old Pinelands High School pupil was also selected to the WP cricket association u-15A team as a wicketkeeper/batsman in the provincial tournament in Stellenbosch in December. “In my group I want to win, but I want to fight women and win for our country,” says Najmunesa. “I train everyday; karate is my life and that’s what I want to achieve in life.” Both Najmunesa and Keagan are black belts and assistant instructors at the dojo. Eleven of Daniels’ students took part in nationals, with 10 returning with medals in one or more event. The four who will represent SA all participated in the full contact events, while the others showed their skills in the semi-contact competition. The SA representatives have to cover their own transport costs to Reunion, with the club hosting a funfair as a fundraiser. ment for the second consecutive time and also competed in the men’s division. The 17-year-old Crystal High pupil says karate is his passion and hopes to make it his career. “I just want to go as far as this allows me to. I want to reach the highest level that there is – the 10th dan,” he comments. “If you are a high rank in the world, you travel the world, competing, free of charge.” Keagan has been practising karate since the age of four and hopes to follow in his uncle Deen’s footsteps, running his own dojo. Najmunesa, who won her division and was disqualified in the final of the women’s final, has also set her sights on a high rank and her own dojo. Her short term goal is to beat her competitors to the top spot in Reunion.

Gift grates local Olympians LIAM MOSES

CLAIMS of inferior quality gifts to Olympic athletes have been brushed aside by the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. The gifts were handed to local Olympic athletes at the send-off when 35 athletes, officials, coaches and managers were honoured at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday 10 July. Alison Smith, the sister of an Olympic athlete, wrote to People’s Post highlighting the poor quality of a framed Olympic T-shirt. From the front the framework seems intact, but on the reverse the T-shirt is tacked to the frame with pins. In the image some of the pins have fallen off and there is no cardboard or other backing to secure the T-shirt. The overall look is that the framing is incomplete. She does not want her brother’s name mentioned, adding athletes are not allowed to speak to the media about the Olympics. “I just thought it was very poor and it felt like a bit of a kick in the teeth. All the athletes have been working really hard to get to this place and I just don’t think they can proudly accept something like that,” says Smith. “It looks like something a child has done. I would think it would be really nice for the Western Cape sports people to be recognised,

but with something like that I just felt it is very poor.” The athletes also received gift bags containing, among others small gifts, a scarf in a South African flag print. In response, MEC for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, says the athletes should “be grateful” for the gifts. Refusing to specifically speak on the Tshirt, Meyer would also not elaborate on who was responsible for the framing or how much it cost. “In the African tradition one is always grateful for whatever gift one receives as we believe it is not the size of the gift, but the thought that counts,” says Meyer. He says the provincial government “thought it fit to honour Western Cape Olympic athletes. This we did within the context of the understanding that taxpayers’ money must be spent responsibly and ... not recklessly on expensive gifts or elaborate functions”. The Olympians should remember they are serving their country, Meyer adds. “The highest honour for any athlete is the opportunity to represent one’s country at the Olympics. The Western Cape government has publicly acknowledged those athletes who have achieved this and who unselfishly understand this honour is about serving your country and not the other way round.”
