Vagrants attacked REYANA STEYN

A

THLONE vagrants ended up in hospital after they were viciously attacked by a group of youngsters in the Athlone CBD.

BEATEN: Adam Blankenberg (52) is still recovering from his beating. Seen here is the gash on his head. Photos: Reyana Steyn

VICTIM: Samuel Van Rooyen (50) was also beaten by the youngsters.

The elderly men were beaten with planks and steel poles by youngsters aged between 10 and 14 for no apparent reason. The Bokmakierie children, who allegedly belong to the G-Unit gang, made their way to the Athlone CBD and attacked them while they were sleeping during the night of Saturday 22 January. People’s Post visited the area and spoke to the vagrants. “I was sleeping on Saturday and at about 22:00 I was attacked,” says Adam Blankenberg (52). “It was four boys with wooden planks and steel poles and they just started beating me. I didn’t know what was happening. I begged them to stop, but they didn’t.” He was left in a pool of blood. Ashley Martin helped Blankenberg and contacted the police to take him to hospital. “It is sickening that this is youngsters who come at night and attack us. We want something to be done immediately, because this can’t carry on.” Blankenberg says: “I have been sleeping in the same spot on the corner of Thembi Road for the past 22 years and this is the first time something like this has happened to me.” The injured man sustained bruises all over his body, had a huge gash to his head which required stitches and he still needs assistance to walk. On the same night, the children attacked a woman who told them to stop beating Blankenberg. “I screamed at them to stop attacking the helpless man, and they in turn shoved me and hit me,” says the vagrant, who wishes to remain anonymous. Another man, Samuel Van Rooyen (50), was also brutally attacked as the boys moved through the

ROYALTY: The Miss Mardi Gras competition was a highlight at the annual Mardi Gras which was held over the weekend. Marche Martin was crowned Queen, with Imogan Smit, left, first princess and Sarahleigh Barber second princess. With them are judges, Maritha Williams of the Cape District Facility Management Commit tee, People’s Post editor Feroza MillerIsaacs and Baxter Theatre Marketing Manager Fahiem Stellenboom. The Mardi Gras continues on Friday and Saturday. Story and more photos, page 9. Photo: Rashied Isaacs CBD. “The boys just started to beat me with their weapons for no reason. I have been living here for 10 years and they just beat me.” This is the second week these boys have come out to attacked the residents of Athlone. “They came and beat me on the head and body, while I was sleeping,” says a vagrant who wishes to remain anonymous. The vagrants say they are not in a shelter because they want to remain in the Athlone community and they do not receive any money, but are willing to receive accommodation in a bid to protect their lives.

Charmaine Less, a community worker, says: “These people are already down and out and are attacked by these naughty youth during the night. We need some kind of action. They cannot continue attacking the senior people like this.” She says the vagrants are scared to open a case at the police station because they fear for their lives. Constable Zita Norman, Athlone police spokesperson, says they are unaware of the assaults in the local CBD. “We are unaware of

them, but we are encouraging anyone who has been assaulted to come forward and open a case,” she says. “Police do patrol in the area and any of these officers can be approached at any time.” To report any crime call (021) 697 9200, 10 111 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. More pics on page 4

Muslims ‘have lost faith in the MJC’ REYANA STEYN

T

EMPERS flared this past week as the community and various Islamic organisations took on the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) over the Orion Cold Storage company scandal. The Cape Town-based frozen foods distributor has allegedly been importing pork products, kangaroo and water buffalo meat, and relabeling the products as beef and halaal. It is also alleged that Orion Cold Storage imported pork hearts from Belgium and Ireland, relabeling and selling them as beef or sheep veal hearts, marked as halaal. 3rd Degree showed undercover footage which apparently showed employees using heatguns to remove original labels and replacing them with halaal stickers. In the programme, the MJC did not comment, but held a press conference on Tuesday. Scores of people gathered outside in protest to show their dismay with the MJC Various members of the Muslim community feel that the MJC was not transparent enough with their dealings in the alleged halaal relabeling process. The MJC granted halaal clearance to consignments from Orion Cold Storage, but has since cut all its ties with the company. However, outraged Muslims have begun questioning the MJC’s halaal certifying process, with many calling for the organisation to be disbanded. Cassiem Parker, spokesperson for People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (Pagad), wants the MJC to be “run transparently” and is asking people to not buy anything that has been certified by the MJC.

“Pagad initially became involved after being approached by people who asked if we could do something. We immediately called on consumer organisations, who also said they were prepared to act. “The MJC has not explained its halaal meat certification process to the public,” says Parker. “We want people to rather eat meat which has been certified by other Muslim bodies until these processes have been made public.” He says the MJC has failed in its responsibility to deliver halaal products to the community. “The MJC must take full responsibility if it is their fault. They should also investigate members of the MJC and hold those people responsible too.” He adds that if the MJC wants to be the service provider, it should set the record straight. “They should say this is the issue and this is the procedure which has failed and this is the person who is responsible, but up until today this has not been done.” Abduragman Khan, spokesperson for the Muslims Against Illegitimate Leaders, says the MJC has a history of not being transparent or being held accountable and it is time that this happens now. “It is a big violation that Muslims were sold pork. Muslims have lost faith in the MJC. They have been at the forefront of dividing people and they should be held accountable. “The certification is a money-making scheme.” Previously, Nabeweya Malick, spokesperson for the Muslim Judicial Council, told People’s Post that the registration of Orion Cold Storage had been revoked. “After it was ruled that Orion Cold Storage

PROTESTS: Muslims protest outside the MJC press conference on Tuesday. had been found guilty, the MJC had no dealing with Orion. The MJC condemns the crime as it shows disrespect to Muslim people. “We would like to assure the community that for 45 years all the proper procedures have been followed to ensure that halaal meats are given to the people.” She added that the chickens which the MJC certified at Orion Cold Storage were halaal. “A vet, inspector and members of the Department of Trade and Industry were present when the chickens arrived and everything

was in order. The MJC had no jurisdiction over the Orion Cold Storage Facility and had no idea what was happening and condemns this action.” Khan, however, says this is not good enough and that the MJC has done irreparable damage. “When people lose faith, how do they get it back?” The paper tried to gain further comment from the MJC before going to print, but was unable to do so.

WO shop owners will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of murder after they allegedly killed a robber. The incident took place at RK Wholesalers in Rylands on Sunday at 12:45 when a man walked into the building and allegedly robbed the store of R23 000. “Staff were busy counting stock for the next day when the man entered the store,” says Constable Zita Norman, Athlone police spokesperson. “He entered after two staff members who were involved allegedly opened the gate to him. The men threatened the shop owners with a fire-arm which was later recovered on the scene.”

No shots were fired during the robbery. “As the man tried to leave the scene, one employee managed to apprehend him,” says Norman. “The men assaulted the suspect, in the presence of the owner’s wife and threeyear-old son.” They then called Rygate security who gave them handcuffs to cuff the man and then called the police. People’s Post tried to gain comment from Rygate Security, but was unable to do so by the time of going to print. Common cause FORTY people were arrested at the weekend after staging an illegal protest at Rondebosch Common which called on government to address issues relating to “land, jobs and housing”. In the aftermath, the City of Cape Town and police find themselves taking flack for allegedly acting “too harshly” against the small group of protesters which police outnumbered and sprayed with blue dye to have them disperse. Organisers believed to be supported by the SA Council of Churches, Cosatu and the SA NGO Coalition are intent on lodging a complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission, and with another protest planned for Saturday, the pressure continues. In 2008 the City’s housing backlog stood at approximately 300 000 registered applicants, but the City estimated that in reality, about 400 000 houses were needed. With figures this high is it a surprise that the electorate, living in backyards and informal settlements, would want luscious public open spaces in more affluent areas? The facts speak: The basic need of housing is not met for so many; the gathering was illegal. That said, was the extent of action taken by the police justified? How feasible is the idea of converting public open spaces in more affluent areas into houses for the poor; especially when coming up against a site of heritage and ecological value, such as the Common? And what will the building of low-cost housing mean for existing residents and ratepayers who provide the City with a fair portion of its annual budget? In the context of our turbulent political history, do such demands even deserve a serious hearing in post-apartheid SA? Housing is a basic right, guaranteed by the Constitution. Power lies in hands of the people, this is a cornerstone of democracy. The will of the people should always govern.

Your SMSes . How about an arrow for cars turning left into Oliver Tambo Drive when the light is red for cars in Vanguard Drive?

Claiming to be against religions IGNORANCE and half-truths are the hallmarks of those who claim to be against religions. Islam is a of life. Genuine Muslims will adhere to the Q’uran, and ignorant ones won’t. This applies to the followers of all religions. Jason Bosche has not given the context of the chapters and verses he quotes of the Q’uran in last week’s People’s Post. When one takes a verse out of context it shows that the person is deliberately lying or is an ignorant person and wants to cause confusion. The first verse he quotes is chap 4 v 89, which states: 4: 89. “They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): but take not friends from their ranks until they flee In the way of Allah (from what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks. The next verse states: 4:90. Except those who join a group between whom and you there is a treaty (of peace), or those who approach you with hearts restraining them from fighting you as well as fighting their own people. If Allah had pleased, He could have given them power over you, and they would have fought you: therefore if they withdraw from you but fight you not, and (instead) send you (guarantees of) peace, then Allah hath opened no way for you (to war against them). As one can see, this referred to a wartime

period and the next verse makes clear that fighting should be only if the enemy wants to continue the battle, otherwise withdraw is the command! The next quote is from chapter 8 v 12: 8:12. Remember Thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): “I am with you: give firmness to the believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them.” When one reads the verses following then one reads that again the situation is a wartime one, pertaining to a battle: Let us see the context: 8:13. This because they contended (resisted by fighting) against Allah and His Messenger. If any contend against Allah and His Messenger, Allah is strict in punishment. 8:14. Thus (will it be said): “Taste ye then of the (punishment): for those who resist Allah, is the penalty of the Fire.” 8:15. O ye who believe! When ye meet the unbelievers in hostile array (in battle), never turn your backs to them. 8:16. If any do turn his back to them on such a Day – unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own) – he draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and his abode is hell, an evil refuge (indeed) As one can see, Bosche is not truthful, but is misquoting the context and exposes his ignorance and his lack of knowledge of the Q’uran. Regarding the hadith which he says speaks of violence the prophet Muhammad

In response . I questioned a zealot the other day at the break of dawn, and asked if he believed in ghosts. He said “no, I’m a religious guy”. He only believes in the holy one. Holy moly? . Thank you, Jason Bosch, for a well written letter. Anon, Lansdowne . I passed the grounds of a school at midday on Tuesday. All the children were practising for sports. They were wearing t-shirts, shorts but no hats. Not one had a hat on and all were sitting in the full midday sun. Teachers, use your common sense. It’s common knowledge to advocated; he again exposes his ignorance of the hadith history. Any person knowing the history of hadith will know that during the lifetime of the prophet no person, be it his companions or family members, ever wrote down his sayings. These so-called hadith were written about 250 to 300 years after his death by non-Arabs. (Only the Q’uran was permitted to be written and the first Q’uran is the memorised one as till today the Q’uran is being memorised as is well known by even non-Muslims). That is why no Muslim will accept any saying attributed to the Prophet which directly contradicts the Q'uran, and this is made clear in: Chapter 69 verses 43-47: “(This is) a message sent down from the Lord of the worlds; and if the apostle (Muhammad) were to invent any sayings in our name, We should certainly seize him by his right hand, and We should certainly then cut off the artery of his heart:

wear hats in the sun! . The entertainment at the Mardi Gras is always good. However, since the revival of the event the stalls resemble a fleamarket. If I need AMC Classic pots I can get them at a supermarket; if I need samoosas I can get them at Wembly. The concept of the Mardi Gras has been lost. If it has not changed this year, it will be our last visit. Steve Just a thought . I suggest that People’s Post add a section on items which have been stolen to help reduce crime and prevent anybody from buying stolen goods. Let’s give it a try at least, please. Cheers. Ish nor could any of you withhold him (from Our wrath).” 68/4: “And thou Muhammad (standest) on an exalted standard of character.” The last point I wish to make is that these rejectors of religion are phonies, because they want to adhere to the norms of religion like engagements, marriage and family social conditions etc. They have no right to get married as marriage is sacred in all religions but not for those who are atheists. Now show me one atheist who will be prepared to allow another man to date his wife, or mother or daughter? If they are truly non-believers in any religion then they should accept that as part of an open society, marriage is not part of their system. Remember, they have no religious book as guidance, so they cannot dispute this claim. AHMED MOOSA Crawford

Welcome win for Milano THE smiles on the faces of the Milano United players said it all as they trotted off the Rooikrans turf in Grassy Park following their hardfought 1-0 win against Mitchell’s Plain United in a Safa Vodacom Regional League encounter on Saturday.

The win, which was a relief team manager, Rafiek Taylor, couldn’t have come at a better time since the Grassy Parkbased side had experienced indifferent results, losing 2-1 to Jomo Power and Salt River Blackpool (1-0) at home and being held to a draw by Ajax Cape Town (2-2) and FC Tygerberg (1-1) in

their last four starts. “Lady Luck has not been on our side and perhaps this long awaited win against Mitchell’s Plain United will be the start of better things to come. We deserved this win because the players have worked tirelessly and are fully aware what is expected from them following our standing in the league. “There is still plenty of hard work to do in building the side into a competitive unit, but I’m confident we can still hold on to our top of the log position,” said Rafiek Taylor. The win sees Milano United back at the top of the standings – 27 points from 13 games with

Ajax Cape Town placed second (25 points) after being held to a 1-1 stalemate against Old Mutual Academy at Pinelands on Saturday. Nevertheless, both Milano and MP United in the opening exchanges grafted like students burning the midnight oil on the eve of the big examination and though Keagan Galant and Nasieg Fredericks of MP United prowled the goal area like a fox on the run – none of them were able to pierce home the opening goal in the first ten minutes of absorbing actionpack soccer. It was Jayard Visagie between the sticks for Milano United who stole the limelight

with some breath-taking saves and that kept the visitors from scoring. In the 85th minute Tasrique Ahmed – one of the home side’s up-and-coming stars scored the decisiva goal with a stunning header off a Shaun Daniels cross that left MP United clutching invisible straw. The other Vodacom Promotional League results: Royal Blues 3, Ikapa Sporting 2; Jomo Power 1, Peace Makers FC 0; Old Mutual Academy 1, Ajax Cape Town 1; Mbekweni United 1, Oriented Birds 0; Cape Town All Stars 1, Salt River Blackpool 0; Glendene United 3, Hanover Park FC 0; FC Tygerberg 2, Steenberg United 1.

Home side falls apart in tense game DURBANVILLE dealt Athlone Athletics’ defence of the Major League title a blow at Parktown on Saturday. The northern suburbs visitors won this closely contested encounter 3-1 after a tense 10th frame standoff to blast the title race wide open. Durbanville drew level in the top of the ninth frame, following an infield error which allowed Tyrone Baglionie to race home. Just before this, Athlone’s coach Neil Adonis replaced Carl Michaels with Lloyd Stevens on the mound. Michaels held the reigns tight on the visitors’ hard-hitting batters during his eight frames on the mound. He allowed only five hits and struck out 11 batters. But then the home side fell apart with a lapse in concentration. With none down, Dylon Coetzer pounced on errors to put his team 1-2 while Terence le Roux drove the nails of disappointment deeper into the broken hearts of the A’s fans when crossing the home-plate on a hit from his coach, Glen Buckley. Garth Terry and Coetzer shared the pitching duties for the visitors. But before this tense two-frame, tempers flared when a scuffle broke out between players at first base with several of them becoming involved in heated verbal altercations. The incident seemed to have troubled A’s more as their game just fell apart when the game resumed after 10 minutes. Buckley praised his charges for their fine efforts. “I guess we are back in contention for the league title. But this weekend we face a stern challenge when we travel to Chukker Road on Friday to take on VOB, while on Sunday we host Bellville. So yes, we need to take heart from this victory and prepare for a tough double header,” said Buckley. Bellville meanwhile thumped Helderberg Pirates 14-1.

People’s Post Athlone Page 15

Post match: Football authorities must do more T

HE football fraternity and sports fans all around the country were stunned by the news that yet another talented, young athlete has been killed. Jeffrey Ntuka, a former Bafana Bafana defender, was stabbed to death near his girlfriend’s house in Kroonstad in the Free State on Saturday 21 January, after reportedly asking someone for a match. He was 26. The defender was once considered to be such a bright prospect that he was signed by English football powerhouse Chelsea in 2003, but his progress was hampered by alcohol abuse and indiscipline. Unfortunately, his story is not an uncommon one in local football – where players often seem to rise from obscurity to stardom, and from poverty to relative wealth, overnight. And then plummet back down to earth even faster. Jabu Pule and Mbulelo Mabizela are perhaps two of the most famous examples of extremely talented footballers who went off the rails after struggling to deal with their new-found fame and wealth, but there are many others. Despite the high prevalence of this problem, the South African Football

Association, the Premier Soccer League and the clubs which employ players are yet to come up with a successful way to prevent it. Footballers need to be taught the necessary life skills to stop themselves from falling prey to drugs, alcohol and excessive lifestyles, and a support system for players also needs to be developed. Together, the stakeholders need to ensure that players are taught, from a young age, how to stay in control off the pitch, as well as on it. The sad reality in South Africa is that not all citizens are taught this at home or at school. The PSL and the clubs in it benefit greatly from the talents of these players, and although they pay their salaries, they owe it to the players and supporters to make sure they lead healthy lives. It also makes sense from a business perspective. Professionals clubs have been guilty of abandoning troubled players too quickly in the past. Although it’s understandable that a company which exists to make as much profit as possible, and employs players to help them achieve this, would not want to carry on paying a player if he is not performing, it is not acceptable that a club can abandon a player without helping him find the help he needs.

Can you lace up for cancer? LILLIAN AMOS

JUST how crazy can you be for cancer? This is the theme for this year’s first annual “Lace-up for Cancer” walk. The Hospice Palliative Care Association hopes to get Capetonians pounding the tar at their “Lace-up for Cancer” event on Saturday 4 February. The event will include a 10km run and a 5km walk at Rondebosch Common in support of World Cancer Day. There are more than 20 different types of cancer, all symbolized by a different colour. For instance, pink for breast cancer and white for lung cancer. But the HPCA will hand out lavender-coloured shoelaces to the first 250 people who register for the event

as lavender is the colour that represents all types of cancer. The Hospice Palliative Care Association was founded in 1987 and serves as a membership organization for hospices around the country. Palliative care is aimed at improving the quality of life of those with lifethreatening illnesses and their families by preventing and providing relief from suffering through the early identification and assessment and treatment of pain and other related physical, spiritual and psychosocial problems. Some of the focus areas include helping patients live as actively as possible, pain and symptom control, providing equipment like wheelchairs and emotional and bereavement support. Douglas Jeftha from Zeekovlei says he

and his family have received help from the Kenilworth Hospice since his diagnoses of prostate cancer in 2010. “The service we got and still get from the organisation is amazing; they have been extremely helpful.” “They came to my house almost every day before I went to the hospice to help me and when I was at the hospice they always made sure I was helped and tried to make me feel at home.” Asked what advice he would give to people who are suffering from any life threatening disease, he says: “Please seek help from these hospices. They are there to help you. “Many people are afraid to go to a hospice because they have the perception that they’ll just die there, but it’s not true.”

Trade-ins welcome

Eric Watlington, advocacy officer for the organisation, says palliative care is available to any person with a life-limiting condition like Cancer or Aids, but the patient must consent to joining a hospice programme. “Anyone can refer a patient to a hospice, after which nurses do an assessment to determine if the person needs palliative care. “Once the person is accepted into a hospice programme, a care plan is devised to meet the person’s needs.” Watlington says the organisation believes that palliative care is a human right for all who need it; therefore there are no costs involved. However, patients or their families can make a donation to their local hospice if they’re able to. According to the association’s website, some hospices can also process claims to medical aids. Hellenic name returns to city LIAM MOSES

F

ORMER Premier Soccer League team Hellenic have reformed almost eight years after closing down when their Premier League franchise was sold to Benoni Premier United. The team, which is now based in Milnerton, started training in November last year and will field three teams in the Super League of the Cape Town Tygerberg Football Association. According to Grant Veitch, operations manager at Hellenic, the club was restarted after he and Mark Byrne, former Hellenic player and coach, and the current director of football, approached the Hajidakis family to purchase the naming rights. The Hellenic name was then superimposed on to Blouberg City Football Club, and a large contingent of staff set up shop at the team’s Tygerhof base. Veitch says developing Cape Town’s abundant football talent will be the main aim of the team for the immediate future. “We think there is something

missing in Cape Town football at the moment. There are certain clubs and academies around that say they are the benchmark for youth development,” said Veitch. “We believe that the benchmark should at another level, which we think we can offer.” The club will function primarily as a football academy, hoping to develop players that they can sell on to professional sides for a profit, and Veitch hopes that the Hellenic name will help to attract these talented youngsters to Milnerton. Veitch, whose father played at left back for the team, said that he and Byrne also hope to rebuild the Hellenic brand to its former glory. “The name will attract a lot of attention and we then have to live up to that expectation. It’s very important that this name is looked after, to the best of our ability,” said Veitch. “And our aspirations are to get Hellenic to where it was all those years ago, up into the PSL. It’s a very long term project, but at the same time it’s something that we are doing as a 10-15 year programme.” Hellenic have three coaches for each one of the three teams current-

ly at the club, as well as a dedicated goalkeeping coach and a biokineticist. The size of the coaching staff is much larger than most teams of Hellenic’s size, but it is the quality of the individuals which is even more surprising. Byrne himself is the former head of development at Udinese, while respective U17and U13 coaches Neven Payne and Cecil Ntlebi held the

same positions at the original team before it closed down. Veitch said that three of the coaching staff are Union of European Football Association (UEFA) accredited and one has the highest level of South African Football Association (SAFA) coaching certificate. According to Byrne, the high number of staff members will help the club to develop the players tech-

nically, mentally and physically. “We have said that our programme is to develop the individual holistically,” said Byrne “I have played overseas, I have coached overseas, I know the levels that are required, and it’s hard. We have too many players who go overseas and then within a year or a year-and-a-half, they come back again because they can’t survive.”

LIFESAV ING CHAL LENGE: Nosipho Abrams wins the Girls Under 14 Beach Sprint at the Nipper Car nival, a competition for Lifesav ing club members between the ages of 8 and 14. The Carnival was hosted at Big Bay on Sunday 15 January. The Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club won the event, while Fish Hoek came second and Camps Bay third.
