ATHLONE: SQUATTING FAMILIES REFUSE TO MOVE FOR PARKING LOT EXTENSION

ive families who have been living in an abandoned cloakroom for up to 15 years may soon lose the dilapidated roof over their heads. This comes as the City of Cape Town plans to demolish the council-owned building once they leave to make space for a parking lot. Irate occupant Llewellyn Wilters says council has been trying to get them out of the overcrowded building adjacent to the Athlone Stadium for more than six years. But he insists the families will not be moved. “We are legal tenants here. In 2009, the matter went to court and the verdict was that unless we are given decent accommodation nearby we may stay on the premises. Our children go to school in the area and we were all born here. We don’t want to be moved to Blikkiesdorp, which council is suggesting.” While their living conditions are not ideal, this is the only home many of them know, says Wilters. “We have been living here in peace. We never bother anyone, we feel safe here and we know our surroundings. We don’t want to move to another area where we might be at risk,” he argues. “I’m sure those trying to evict us think we are a nuisance and are being unnecessary, but this is a game of survival. It is easy to judge when you go to sleep in a warm bed at night with food in your stomach and a roof over your head. It’s not that easy for us. Here is no electricity and only one tap for everyone to use.” Wilters says unless they are given accommodation in Athlone, they will not vacate the property. “The only time they use this section of the parking area is when Kaiser Chiefs plays. With all other events, this parking lot is empty.” Ward councillor Suzette Little confirms an offer to relocate the squatters to Blikkiesdorp has been rejected by the occupants and as a result no final decision regarding the land has been made. “The issue has been a long time coming and appeared before the court for judgement a few years ago. At the time it was decided that an eviction order will not be granted be-

The way these people are living is a health and safety risk. It is unhygienic. And if a fire breaks out, it could endanger others too.” Little says it was decided in subcouncil last week that the matter would once again be taken to court for consideration. “Whether the court grants an eviction notice or not, we need to know the way forward so that we can explore other options or come to an agreement.”
Athlone police commander Colonel Krisjan Verwant confirms they have received complaints of anti-social behaviour and loitering on the premises, but no criminal incidents have been reported. “Learner drivers practising in the parking lot and those attending events at the stadium often complain about being harassed,” he says. “Other than that, we don’t generally receive complaints from neighbours about the vagrants.” Athlone Community Policing Forum chairperson Azizah Kannemeyer says she hasn’t received a single complaint about the occupants.
“I see no reason why they should be moved. They are not causing any trouble. I don’t see why they need to be moved to a place where you have to open your door with a tin opener. These people deserve to be treated with dignity.” Kewtown Civic Association chairperson Merle Jacobs says other than illegal dumping, she has no complaints about the squatters. “The only problem we have is the mess on the field and sometimes being harassed for money.” V Should the squatters be moved? EDUCATION: PILOT PROGRAMME TO HELP TRUANT PUPILS
Keeping children in school TARRENLEE HABELGAARN @LeeLaVidaLoca
pilot programme addressing family issues aims to decrease the number of truant pupils roaming the streets during the day. What started as a pilot programme with six volunteer family officers addressing the reasons for pupils in ward 49 being truant, will now be rolled out to all wards across Cape Town. Following a successful trial in Athlone the project will create employment opportunity to more than 30 Extended Public Work Programme workers. The initiative was formed after residents noticed an alarming number of pupils on the street daily. Community worker Zainu Johaardien says it is always worrying to see children roaming around the streets while they are supposed to be in school. “It’s not safe for children to be wondering around when a bullet can strike them at any time, or they can even get raped or mugged,” she says. “I decided to contact the councillor and

seek advise on how we could help these children. It’s not only children from Athlone but surrounding areas too.” Mayoral Committee member for Early Childhood and Social Development Suzette Little says upon investigation it became clear that many of the children who were labelled as problem children at school and who were on the verge of expulsion, had troubled backgrounds. “We found that many of these kids who are 11 and younger are actually the parents at home. They take care of their siblings, they cook and they clean. If mom and dad are high or drunk they need to take care of them too,” she says. “As a result they are unable to concentrate at school because they are worried about what is happening at home, so they bunk. If they are absent for long periods of time they fall behind with work and then want to bunk because they don’t understand the work.” The family officers are stationed at schools with the most need and intervene to create a support structure for pupils with a high truancy rate. “Teachers are now able to refer the children to these workers who refer them to a
Council brick thief caught red-handed
Breaking news as it happens
Law Enforcement officers recovered more than eight tons of stolen bricks on Tuesday. Officers caught the suspect in the act and recovered nearly 2 700 bricks that the City of Cape Town had just recently used for paving an area in Manenberg. Law Enforcement’s Rapid Response Unit was on patrol along Govan Mbeki Road when they spotted a man loading bricks into

a wheelie bin. Officers approached the man and found that he had about 80 bricks in the bin. The suspect was arrested for theft of council property and taken to Manenberg Police Station. Officers then returned to Govan Mbeki Road to investigate further and found identical piles of bricks.

social worker if need be. In some schools it has made a big difference and both the teachers and pupils are reaping the benefits. There is better communication in classrooms and we are actually addressing the core root of the problem,” Little says. “I’m excited to have the pilot rolled out to other communities. This is a problem that is happening across Cape Town and the earlier we can assist children with the tools to do well at school and in their immediate environment the better it is. I believe we will be saving many children from a future of drug addiction and gangsterism with this project.” Manenberg police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennet says truancy has become a logistical nightmare to officers who don’t have the resources available to help keep pupils at schools. “So many children are bunking and their parents don’t even realise it. That’s the sad part,” he says. “Before there was only one or two children bunking so we could make sure they got back to school. Now there are so many children who are walking the streets during the day and we don’t have enough officers to spend time making sure the children are in school.”

Further investigation revealed that the same suspect had provided the bricks to an individual selling them along the side of the road. Officers confiscated about 2700 bricks which, at an average weight of nearly 3kg each, amounts to more than eight tons of bricks which had been stolen. Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security JP Smith says it is important for the public to inform authorities of criminal activity. “We cannot build safer communities and upgrade amenities when there are people at the ready to slow our progress. It is also possible that someone would have seen this happening. We need members of the public to take ownership and speak up when they witness these criminal acts.”

BRIDGETOWN: CLAIMS OF DRUG DEALING
Tuck shop is shut down
TARRENLEE HABELGAARN @LeeLaVidaLoca
homeowner who applied to run a legal tuck shop from his Vink Road, Bridgetown, house has been given the thumbs down by council owing to allegations of drug peddling and anti-social behaviour. This comes much to the relief of neighbours who objected to the application, citing illegal activity as their cause for concern. According to the subcouncil minutes, objections received include claims of drug users buying their poison from the house and loitering on the premises. A resident also alleged that neighbourhood homes and cars are broken into and the stolen goods are taken to the property. Another comment states the owner previously made an application, which prompted neighbours to “sign a petition to close it”. In response to the objections, the applicant stated residents are objecting because “they assume that illegal activities are going on”, but nothing was found when police inspected the property. In response to the loitering complaints, he stated the way in which people conduct themselves is not the applicant or owner’s fault. He also said the break-ins “do not have anything to do with the fact that the owner wants to run a legal business from his house”. When People’s Post approached the homeowner for comment, he declined the opportunity. Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman confirms numerous raids resulting from community tip-offs have been conducted at the house. “We regularly conduct stop and searches as well as raids at the property to ensure no illegal activity is taking place,” she says. “We have on occasion found individuals
in possession of drugs in the vicinity of the premises, but no direct link has yet been made.” Police have increased visibility around house shops in the area, Norman adds, and officers will be conducting more random searches to clamp down on drug peddling. “We will not tolerate any substance abuse. Those found in possession of drugs will be held accountable for their actions. We are urging all residents to report any suspicious behaviour or any property where they suspect illegal activity is taking place.” Former Western Cape Community Policing Board chairperson Hanif Loonat says he is glad that residents have taken a stand. “I have received complaints of drug peddling and abuse, prostitution and anti-social behaviour at this property. It’s no secret – everyone knows what goes on there,” he insists. “The shop is just a front to attract the youth. It cannot be allowed to reopen. We cannot allow illegal activity to prosper in the community.” Ward councillor Suzette Little says the decision to decline the application comes as a direct result of the community’s objections. “We have to listen to how the community feels. When it comes to any building plans, licenses or business operation in a area public participation is of utmost importance,” she says. “We don’t live in the area and rely on the word of the community to guide our decisions. If it was one person complaining we would have to consider whether it is a personal attack or a justified reason, but in this instance we received numerous objections and have to take the word of the people who live here.” The house was also previously discussed at community meetings and neighbours also report seeing known drug addicts frequenting the property. MEDICAL: FULLBODY SCAN IN SECONDS
New technology a lifesaver T
he new Lodox X-ray machine at Groote Schuur Hospital only takes 13 seconds to do a full body scan. With the newly installed Xmplar-dr it is now possible to do full-body images 1800mm x 680mm in size, says the provincial health department. The complete digital image appears on the viewer about 1015 seconds after the scan has been taken. The trolley is electric and communicates directly with the system, allowing for quicker processing of trauma patients.
The use of linear slot-scanning radiography (LSSR) to achieve low-dose X-ray screening of humans was conceived by De Beers Mining Company in 1991. Diamond theft at De Beers mines was leading to a significant loss of revenue. A quick and safe method had to be devised to screen employees for diamonds that were hidden in or on the body. The first prototype LSSR scanner for De Beers was demonstrated in 1994. These scanners go by the name Scannex and scan
in a vertical motion from head to toe. Based on the success of the Scannex it was thought that a full-body X-ray scanner could be implemented for trauma radiology. By 1995 De Beers decided to evaluate a Scannex scanner that would scan in a horizontal manner because trauma patients are usually prone. In 1996 a prototype scanner was installed and tested at Groote Schuur Hospital. The success of this prototype led to further development. The next version of the
full-body low-dose X-ray scanner was the Statscan which had a C-arm that could rotate to allow lateral and oblique views in addition to the AP views of the patient. This true prototype scanner was installed at Groote Schuur in 1999. The next upgrade to a Statscan occurred in 2002. The new Xmplar-dr is the newest version. About 1250 patients benefit from the Lodox machines very year. The Lodox saves time so that life-saving decisions can be made.
Lights go on with solar energy With the cost of electricity going through the roof, consumers are being assisted to invest in a cost-effective, sustainable and safe form of light. No matter the lighting dilemma – whether caused by loadshedding, not having access to electricity or inability to afford electricity – Total South Africa has the solution in its innovative Awango by Total range of portable solar-powered lights. Awango by Total lights rely 100% on the sun for power and come with their own mini self-sustaining solar panel. All the products in the range provide superior light intensity and are safer than candles and paraffin. Some even include cellphone charging capabilities, which is particularly beneficial for people living without electricity. The aim is to make Awango lights available to the communities in which they operate through affordable payment plans. Christian des Closières, Total SA managing director, says: “Our aim is that these lights help those households which do not have access to electricity or to a consistent or reliable power supply. We want to enable school children living in remote areas to do their homework at night, and parents to

INDIGENT: RELIEF AT HAND
Rates for poor MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertMB
art of the City of Cape Town’s draft budget proposal currently under review includes the restructuring of policies for rates relief to poor residents. Johan van der Merwe, head of the City’s finance portfolio committee, explained how the City’s policy would be structured during the next financial year which starts on 1 July, provided the provisional budget is accepted. “Part of the concept budget is the concept policy on indigent relief. When the concept budget is approved at the end of May, we will have concrete figures to consider for approval regarding policy for poverty alleviation,” he said. “The figures in the draft policy reflect that which can be revised after public participation process has been completed, and will be effective as of the new financial year. “We care for the poor and vulnerable,” he said. He said the financial form this “care”
would take, once the provisional budget and policies were accepted, was as follows: VFree basic services to those with properties valued at less than R400 000. VFree basic services to those with a gross monthly household income of R3 500. VSenior citizens qualify for rates rebates if their gross monthly household income is less than R12 000 per month. VIndigent grants provide a 100% rates rebate, an additional 4,5kl of water and a free 240 litre refuse bin for all households with a gross monthly income of R3 500 or less. V75% rates rebate for residents with an income between R3 500 and R4 000. V50% rates rebates for residents with an income between R4 000 and R4 500. V25% rates rebate for residents with an income between R4 500 and R5 000 for 2013/2014. Van der Merwe said in general the electricity tariff blocks apply per calendar month and not per purchase. He advised consumer to only purchase the necessary amount of energy they need in a month. “This will keep the amount paid as low as possible.”
RELIEF: Rates rebates are once again on the cards for the City’s poorer communities.

BEAUTY: ‘DANGEROUS CONCENTRATIONS’ OF CHEMICAL
Straightening a health risk – study T
ired of frizzy, unmanageable hair? It’s best to get clued up before you get that Brazilian treatment. A study by UCT’s dermatology department has found dangerous concentrations of formaldehyde in seven brands sold in South Africa. According to a statement, formaldehyde exists as a liquid, known as formalin, in cosmetic products and is unstable in its gaseous state. Researchers at UCT have found that most commercial “Brazilian keratin type’’ hairstraightening products tested in a study contain unacceptably high and dangerous concentrations of formaldehyde. The study was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatologists in February. It was led by associate professor Nonhlanhla Khumalo in the Division of Dermatology. Brazilian keratin treatment (BKT) and similar hair-straightening products fix and retain a straight shape even when the hair is wet and their popularity is increasing worldwide, says the statement. A Brazilian mortician is said to have invented the method.
The researchers tested seven brands sold in South Africa at the time of the study. All seven products were advertised as international brands, but the study was unable to confirm that all the tested products were imported from Brazil. The maximum safe concentration of formaldehyde set by the US Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel and by most countries, including South Africa, is less than 0.2%. Of the seven commercial BKT brands studied, six had formaldehyde levels that ranged from 0.96% to 1.4%. That is five times higher than the legal limit and these included five brands labelled “formaldehyde-free”. “The concentration of formaldehyde in the products we tested confirms recent international data, this in spite of much media attention and regulatory concern,” say the authors of the study. “Heat straightens hair by breaking down temporary hydrogen bonds found between keratin filaments, but the effect is lost when the hair gets wet. The convenience and popularity of long-lasting straight hair has resulted in a flood of products. These brands are known by various names.” Writing in the South African Medical Journal, Khumalo said formaldehyde is associated with eye and skin reactions and adverse pregnancy outcomes. “It is classified as a carcinogen or cancer-causing agent. Chronic exposure to high concentration is associated with respiratory and blood cancers such as leukaemia and lymphomas,” she wrote. According to the researchers, high concentrations of formaldehyde, for example in the wood industry, are permitted under strict air control regulations. This is not the case in most salons where the products are used. Authors say the study is limited, as they have not been able to include all internationally available BKT products.

CRIME: DRUG DEALERS TARGET TAXI DRIVERS
Wheelie bad for business
TARRENLEE HABELGAARN @LeeLaVidaLoca
axi drivers falling victim to attacks by drug dealers have commuters fearing for their safety. Taxis being vandalised and drivers being robbed is becoming a weekly occurrence, say some traders in Gatesville. A trader, speaking on condition of anonymity, says he has observed on more than one occasion how a taxi’s wheels are punctured or windows smashed. “I don’t know if it is because they want the drivers to transport goods or if its because of money, but lately here are all kinds of characters hanging around the taxis loading on the other side of Klipfontein Road,” he insists. “I never interfere but I see everything. The other day I saw a taxi driver being robbed while a knife was pointed at him and this while passengers were being loaded just behind them. Elderly people and children use these services and what happens if someone decides they’re unhappy with driver and gets trigger happy with passengers?” The trader says incidents are occurring more frequently and police visibility is poor. “Sometimes a van will drive right pass the taxis and won’t even notice anything. I don’t know if they don’t pay attention or whether they decide to ignore it but police action needs to be taken here.” Taxi driver *Kevin Matthews admits that many taxi drivers are involved with gangs and drug peddlars in the surrounding are-
as. “It’s no secret there are many taxi drivers working for gangs and drug dealers. It is a dangerous business and it puts all of us at risk,” he says. “Most of us are just trying to make an honest living but the few bad apples make it difficult for the rest of us. Most of us are scared to contact the police or do something because we don’t want to put a target on our heads. We need the police to be more alert to what is happening right under their noses.” Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman says they are unaware of alleged attacks on taxi drivers. “No reports have been filed regarding any violent attacks or vandalism on taxis in the area. If anyone does feel as though they are being victimised or are in danger they are advised to anonymously call our crime hotline. They can also call the station and ask to speak to me.” Athlone Community Policing Forum spokesperson Azizah Kannemeyer says they have received tip-offs from concerned family members of taxi drivers and also commuters, but can do nothing unless formal complaints are made at the police station. “We are urging taxi drivers to come forward and report any attacks of violence at the police station. If the police don’t know where to concentrate their resources they can’t assist the community. If they are not alerted to crime hotspots we cannot keep them accountable when the need for service delivery is not met,” she says. * A different name was used.

Toyota on course with hybrid concept WHEELS24 @Wheels24 Toyota’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered car, the Fuel Cell Vehicle concept (FCV), will soon become a reality. The automaker believes it’s a major but logical step, as it builds on the success it has achieved with hybrids, such as its popular Prius, over the past 15 years. Executive vice-president of Toyota, Karl Schlicht, says: “Our unique hybrid history and experience has proven invaluable for the next big leap. In 2010, we promised our first fuel cell car for 2015 and we are fully on track to honour our commitment.” Schlicht says hydrogen is easy to store, is better at capturing renewable
energies than batteries and can be produced anywhere. “Taking these facts into account reinforces how Toyota is convinced fuel cell technology can deliver our ultimate goal of zero emissions and sustainable transport.” The FCV sedan concept will pioneer its new technology. Schlicht explains the car gives “clear hints” of the design of the production version to be delivered in 2015, and that with the benefit of a high energy density fuel stack and a maximum 100kW it “will have the potential to cover more than 800km on a tank of fuel”. The 700 bar hydrogen tank holds 156F for a potential range of 830km. Toyota and BMW entered into a partnership to further fuel cell research and development.

olkswagen’s redesigned Touareg made its debut at the 2014 China Autoshow in Beijing. Sporting refreshed styling, new features, trim levels and improved efficiency, Volkswagen claims its rugged SUV is more competitive than ever. Volkswagen SA confirms the new Touareg will arrive locally “early in 2015”. The front-end design of the Touareg features larger headlights (now xenons), a deeper and redesigned radiator grille with four horizontal fins and a tweaked bumper, giving the SUV a wider stance. The rear sports a redesigned bumper with integrated LED foglights and a new diffuser between the twin exhausts. It has new side mirrors, a range of new wheel designs and paint options. Inside, the Touareg benefits from new leather upholstery, redesigned accents and lighting. The all-wheel drive Touareg is launched with a range of engines; turbo diesel (V6 and V8 TDI), petrol (V6 and V8 FSI), turbo charged petrol (V6 TSI) and Hybrid

(V6 TSI and electric motor). The V6 units are mated to eight-speed auto and all engines are equipped with stop/start. In addition to its 4Motion all-wheel drive, all units have an off-road driving mode that is operated via a rotary switch. It configures the anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution and traction control for off-road use, activates hill climb assist and gearshift points of the auto transmission. All models are equipped with an automatic post-collision braking system and a coasting function – only available with eight-speed auto. The coasting function utilises the vehicle’s kinetic energy when driving downhill or when acceleration is not needed. The optional automatic distance control (ADC) has been enhanced. It uses a radar sensor integrated into the front of the car to detect distance from the car in front, maintain a pre-selected speed and automatically brake or accelerate in traffic. The ADC now includes an emergency braking function and can automatically pull away in stop-and-go traffic.

Sales on par
ew vehicle sales for March held up reasonably well and were virtually unchanged compared to the same period in 2013, reports the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa). In March 2014, 55 363 new vehicles were registered which was an 87-vehicle decline or 0.2% drop compared to the 55 450 vehicles sold in March 2013. The consumer-driven car segment recorded a year-on-year decline of 2.2%. Naamsa says in a statement: “Prospects for the balance of the year would continue to be affected by subdued economic growth, above inflation new vehicle price increases as a result of exchange rate weakness, and upward pressure on interest rates. “Consumer sentiment remained under pressure due to high levels of indebtedness, sharp increases in energy and transport costs and e-tolling in Gauteng.” It says these factors would influence consumer demand in the case of the new car market. Naamsa says: “The new car market remained under pressure during March 2014 and at 36 798 units reflected a decline of 814 units or a fall of 2.2% compared to the 37 612 cars sold in March 2013.”
Beemer recall over bolt defect WHEELS24 @Wheels24
Export sales reflected a decline of 3122 vehicles or 11.2% fall from 27 782 vehicles exported in March 2013 to 24 660 units in 2014. Industry sales comprised of 85.8% dealer sales, 5% to government, 4.7% vehicle rental industry and 4.5% to industry corporate fleets. Domestic sales of light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini-buses were up 3.7% compared to the same period in 2013. Vehicle sales in the medium and heavy truck segments reflected a mixed performance with a decline of 6.1% in medium commercial vehicles and a 14.9% increase in heavy trucks and buses. Naamsa says: “Domestic trading conditions were anticipated to remain difficult with pressure on margins, particularly in the new car and light commercial vehicle sectors. “As a result of the challenging macro-environment, general consensus was that the domestic market in 2014 was likely to be flat and might even show modest declines in the various segments compared to 2013.” Naamsa reports that vehicle exports should benefit from improving global economic conditions and barring domestic supply disruptions, could show strong growth during the second half of 2014, particularly in respect of vehicle exports to Asia, Africa and Europe.
BMW is recalling 489 000 vehicles worldwide due to a possible engine-bolt defect. The biggest markets affected are China with 232 000 vehicles and the US with 156 000 vehicles. A total of 3120 BMWs in South Africa are affected by the company’s voluntary recall. According to BMW the recall is a precautionary measure: “BMW is taking the precaution of checking the bolts on the Vanos unit in selected vehicles with six-cylinder en-
gines. Depending on the results, the bolts or the Vanos unit will be replaced.” The Vanos unit is a variable valve timing system produced by BMW. BMW communications manager Edward Makwana says: “We will be contacting all the affected customers to check the Vanos unit on the affected vehicles. Depending on the results of this check, either the bolts or the complete Vanos unit will be replaced. “Vehicles will spend about four hours in the BMW workshop and this service will be free.”

Slower times the Two Oceans Runners from Lesotho snatched two of the top three spots in the men’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon on Saturday, while Russian athletes dominated the women’s race. Lesotho’s Lebenya Nkoka won the men’s race in a time of 03:09:52 and his compatriot Masilo Matjiane finished third in 03:12:00. Second place went to South African veteran Hendrick Ramaala who finished his first Two Oceans Ultra in 03:11:33 Nkoka, who finished ninth last year, attributed his victory to focused altitude training, speed work and strong coaching support. “We work hard as a group and train together at high altitudes,” he said. The team receive significant support from the Lesotho Ministry of Gender and Youth, and Sports and Recreation, Nkoka added. In the women’s race it was third-time lucky for Russian runner Nina Podnebesnova, who finally won after placing fifth last year and 2011. She crossed the finish line in a time of 03:40:07, while Ethiopian Shitaye Debellu finish three minutes behind her in 03:43:37. Podnebesnova attributed her victory to a change in coach. For the second year running, Russian twins Elena and Olesya Nurgalieva didn’t perform as they had hoped, as they both battled flu. Elena took third place in
a time of 03:43:59 and Olesya only managed a sixth-place finish. In the half marathon race, athletes battled windy conditions from start to finish. Defending champion Stephen Mokoka won the men’s race in 01:04:16, almost a minute slower than his time last year. Joel Mmone placed second and Sibabalwe Mzazi was third. The women’s race belonged to Lebo Phalula who comfortably ran to victory in a time of 01:14:00. Rene Kalmer came second in 01:14:23, with Gezashigh Gemeda of Ethiopia taking third in 01:15:02. A record number of athletes participated in the race this year. Race director Chet Sainsbury, who finished his 32nd ultra marathon, says the weather conditions resulted in slower average times this year. “Despite the cold start, things quickly heated up, which made for a slower overall ultra marathon and resulted in a record number of athletes completing the ultra in between six and seven hours,” he says. The wind also contributed to a slower half marathon. Title Sponsor Old Mutual offered a R1million prize to the male and female runners who break the Ultra Marathon records, but Thompson Magawana and Frith van der Merwe’s records remained in place for another year.

ver 5000 walkers and runners of all ages and ability are expected to line-up in Darling Street for the fourth Jive Slave Route Challenge on Sunday 11 May. The annual race features a half marathon, 10km run 10km walk and 5km fun run, which follows routes designed to highlight Cape Town’s natural beauty and rich history. People’s Post is the print media sponsor. All of the distances take participants past some of the city’s most important historic landmarks, many of which are related to slavery. Achmat Jacobs, deputy president of hosts Lion of Africa Itheko Sport Athletic Club, says the race was founded after the club saw a need such an event. “We wanted to start a race that is different from any other races – that is how this concept (was born),” he says. “Itheko is the fastest growing club in the Cape and South Africa. The club has over 1000 members, with over 200 children in the kids’ athletic development programme. We are the biggest running club in the province, with the second most race entries to the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.” The race will pass the Iziko Slave Lodge, the Slave Tree Plaque and the Whipping Post
and directly through the Castle of Good Hope. Several historic churches and mosques are also dotted along the route. The half marathon will start at 07:00, with the 10km race at 07:15, 5km fun run at 08:00 and the 10km walk at 08:30. Instead of a normal starting pistol, runners in all four events will be sent off by a miniature cannon fired from the castle. All finishers will receive medals and all entrants will receive a coupon to visit the castle next month. Entertainment will start on the Grand Parade at 09:00 and lucky prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Entries for the race can be submitted at all Sportsman’s Warehouse branches until Sunday 27 April. Online entries can be completed at www.topevents.co.za before Sunday 4 May. Race numbers need to be collected from 16:00 until 20:00 on Friday 9 May and from 10:00 until 17:00 on Saturday 10 May. hess is flourishing on the Cape Flats thanks to support from the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). Two local chess clubs are currently part of the DCAS Club Development Programme which assists sports clubs with funding and equipment. The clubs are based in based in Mitchell’s Plain and Athlone. Mitchell’s Plain Chess Club chairperson Reggie Sinden says the support allows them to transport its 41 juniors members. “We have a lot of kids we have to transport to Rocklands every Saturday – they don’t always have their own transport,” he says. “Some members try to transport the kids, but the programme comes in very handy.” Last Wednesday both clubs were present at the sports funding ceremony at Athlone Stadium, where over R2-million was handed over to 47 provincial sports federations. The two chess clubs and a kickboxing club also received equipment to assist with development. Each club received four chess clocks, 20 chess sets, two chess pads, a tog bag and three demonstration boards. Athlone Chess Club chairperson Andre van Reenen says the equipment will realign their development focus, after most of the club’s equipment was stolen two years ago.

“We have been promoting chess at Bonteheuwel, Athlone and Gatesville libraries,” he says. “There are six libraries in the vicinity, so we are working on getting a library chess organisation going to we promote the sport.” Van Reenen, who is also honorary president of Western Province Chess and Chess South Africa, says the club currently does not have a meeting and practice place, but members participate in tournaments. “I need assistance, but no one is willing to assist – it’s very difficult,” Van Reenen says. There are currently 415 sports clubs on the DCAS Development Programme. Provincial cultural affairs and sport minister Dr Ivan Meyer says chess is has been a focus of his administration. “Since Gary Kasparov (chess grandmaster and former World Champion) visited two years ago, chess has grown dramatically in the (province),” he says. “That revolution is still intact and I want to thank the WP Chess Federation (for) working so hard.” The R2m handed over to the federations will be used for three different purposes: R1.4m will go towards development; R585 000 will be used for 43 major events; and R225 000 will be used for five sport tourism events. V For more information on the clubs or to get involved phone Athlone Chess Club on 078 176 5568 or Mitchell’s Plain Chess Club on 082 325 4440.

Urban Warriors do it again LIAM MOSES @LiamCPT
jax Cape Town claimed their second consecutive Metropolitan Premier Cup title after beating Mamelodi Sundowns in the final on Monday. The young Urban Warriors scored early in the second-half and held out until the final whistle to win 1-0 and claim their sixth title. Victorious coach Maaher Davids says his side were out toprove a point. “This is a great achievement for the club and it shows that we have the best academy in the country – possibly even in Africa,” he says. “We weren’t the favourites, but we proved everybody wrong.” Ajax went to into the final unbeaten, but had a less than impressive start to the tournament. They kicked off with a 2-0 win against School of Excellence, but were held to a goalless draw by Claremont’s ASD Academy and a 1-1 stalemate against Beaufort West City, scraping through to the play-offs from Group B behind ASD. But the defending champions’ fortunes improved in the last 16, as they beat Supersport United 1-0 to advance to quarter-finals and a clash with local rivals Santos. Ajax snuck past The People’s Team 4-3 on penalties, after regular time finished with the scores level at 1-1. In the semi-finals, Ajax edged ASD 1-0 while Sundowns beat Hellenic 1-0. The Brazilians may have started the game as favourites, but Ajax were better in the
opening exchanges. Both sides struggle to retain possession but Sundowns were completely incapable of transition from defence into attack. Ajax kept the Pretoria side pinned back with a high defensive line and constant pressing from the midfield and forwards. The high pressure game eventually paid off when Olwethu Nguye stole possession just outside the box and played Charlton Basson into space on the left flank. The forward made no mistake, sending a scorcher into the top corner, beyond the reach of Sundowns goalkeeper Mpho Mathekhga. Ajax were content to play on the break for the rest of the half, breaking up Sundowns’ attacks and launching counter-attacks out wide. The game opened slightly in the secondhalf and Sundowns did a better job of finding their attackers. However, the Urban Warriors’ defence held firm and kept ’Downs scoreless. Ajax skipper Yagan Sasman put in a composed performance to lead his side to victory. The skipper constantly tested throughout the game, but seldom erred. “We are overwhelmed to win it,” he said. “Although we were confident, we didn’t expect to win. “Everybody worked hard for each other and it worked out great for us.” Senoane Gunners beat Harmony Academy 1-0 in the plate final, while Glendene United overcame Bidvest Wits by the same score-line to win the mid-section final.
