Problem house demolished

NURENE JASSIEMMARCUS

AT WORK: Gleemor residents destroyed a house believed to be attracting prostitutes and unsavoury elements to the area.Photo: Nurene JassiemMarcus

CONCERNED residents in Gleemor took matters into their own hands on Saturday by demolishing a house which, they say, was until recently a hive of unsavoury and criminal activity. The house, located on the corners of Thornton and Boeschoten roads, became vacant just over a year ago. Nearby residents say the derelict house had become a breeding ground for cockroaches, flies and mice and the stench of faeces and urine had become unbearable, especially on warm days. Armed with large hammers, scaffolding and other demolition equipment, men, women and even some teens, knocked the building down piece by piece on Saturday morning. It took just over six hours to level the building. Retired principal and Gleemor resident, Jeff Paulse, was the driving force behind the demolition. He says he noticed the house had a “magnetic attraction” for vagrants and prostitutes in the area. “When the vagrants started moving in and prostitutes used the house as a place to take their customers, I also noticed that house burglaries in the area escalated. The trolley gang who collects rubble for a small fee also started using the property as a dumping ground,” he says. Griffon Schippers, who lives next door to the problem house, says he has had to sleep “with one eye open” for the past three years. “I would wake up in the middle of the night and hear women screaming or arguing and fighting in the house next door,” Schippers says. According to one of the property’s owners, Shaheen Ryan, the house has been in his family since 1971 and he repaired all damages to the house about three years ago. Thereafter, his brother was entrusted with the upkeep of the property and rented rooms to various people after which it fell into disrepair, he says. In February this year, the house was gutted by a fire, and nobody has lived there since. Ryan says he received a notice from the City of Cape Town to demolish, renovate or repair the building, but was not in a financial position to do so.

The property can also not be sold as it is tied up in an estate-related legal battle. “When Mr Paulse told me things were getting out of hand, I immediately agreed to sign a document giving the community permis-

sion to demolish the house,” he says. Those involved in the demolition did so voluntarily and residents donated food and refreshments on the day to ensure everyone had enough stamina to complete the task.

Paulse expressed his thanks to the community for their support as well as the local construction company owners, Nazeem Hattas and Ebrahim Allie, for project managing the demolition.

Fighting back against abuse TAMMY PETERSEN

IT started with a shove. Sheila had been married to Tony for less than a year when they had their first heated argument. “He didn’t like what I was wearing,” she says. “I ignored it because he had never been violent towards me before.” That was 10 years ago. Today, Tony is in jail for assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm after he nearly beat her to death with an iron. Sheila’s story could be that of thousands of women around the country, but one mostly only whispered by those who hear their neighbours’ terrified screams at night. Sunday saw the launch of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, an annual event which aims to spread the message that abuse is a scourge which shouldn’t be swept under the carpet. Sheila, a perfectly groomed secretary in her late 20s, doesn’t strike one as a victim. She is confident, intelligent and independent with a defiant, strong air about her. “Looks can be deceiving,” she says, with a wry smile. “I went through hell with that

man, but I came out stronger thanks to what he put me through.” She married the diesel mechanic when she was only 19; two months after taking the plunge, she fell pregnant with their eldest daughter. “I was a housewife; Tony believed women were meant to be homemakers and bear children. Money was sometimes tight and although I wanted to contribute to our income, I had to stay home and do my ‘female duties’.” She was about seven months pregnant when her husband found out she had started applying for work. “I was interested in temp jobs or ‘work from home’ offers. Tony found my CV and accused me of wanting to find ways to meet men. He came pretty close to smacking me that night. I dismissed it; I told myself he had probably had a bad day at work.” About a month after their daughter was born, he shoved her down the stairs. “We had a stupid argument about supper and he lost it. He grabbed me and tossed me down the eight stairs at our back door. When he realised what he had done, he cried and said it was an accident. He begged me to forgive him. I did – I didn’t know any better.” But the abuse escalated.

“He started smacking me, and later he would beat me with his fists in front of our children. The worst beating came after I spoke to an elderly neighbour and he told me he could see we were having an affair,” Sheila says. “The man was old enough to be my father.” Despite family and friends pleading with her to leave Tony, she blamed herself for what she was going through. “This wasn’t the man I married,” she says. “I would always tell myself I was wrong and I was the cause of his behaviour. Who else could make such a good man so angry that he would do such terrible things?” The beatings continued for years – for everything from missing socks to looking at another man – until the day he came after her with the iron. “He wanted a sandwich and I asked him to give me a few minutes to finish ironing his shirts. When I looked up, he charged at me like a raging bull, grabbed the iron from my hands and started swinging it at me,” she says. Sheila woke up the next day in hospital. “My arms were burnt and I was black and blue. I don’t know why it took me so long to see I had married a mad man. He was deranged. My children were traumatised and I was a shadow of who I used to be. That was the day I decided I would never be his punching bag again.” She laid a charge and Tony was arrested. “He apologised for his behaviour about 100 times, but I had made up my mind. When that didn’t work, the threats started. I knew I would probably lose everything, but this wasn’t about me any more. It was about my children and what they were being taught. What example would I be setting? That it’s okay to be a man’s rag doll? I knew better,” Sheila says, fighting back tears. More than a year after taking a stand, Tony

was convicted of the assault. “I don’t know and don’t even care what the sentence was. I got a divorce and told myself I would rather be a single parent than be dead.” Although she doesn’t live the comfortable life she once had, she is happy to have a place to sleep – peacefully. She now works as a secretary at a manufacturing firm and lives with her elderly parents. “And I have met a new man,” she says. “He is good to me and my children and wouldn’t even think of hurting me. He shouldn’t consider it either – I learnt karate!” Sheila laughs. While she now knows how to hit back, she advises women who are in her “old shoes to buy a new pair”. “No man is worth your pain or tears,” she says. “There are so many good, kind gentlemen out there. All you have to do is find him.”

At the event, the traffic department had a full vehicle check point and while People’s Post was there, many fines were issued on the spot. People with outstanding warrants were stopped and the Hulk was on site. “Hulk is a 26-wheel vehicle that was donated to the City and has since been converted into a mobile traffic centre which is equipped to be linked to the Electronic National Traffic Information System (e-Natis) and is able to process warrants on site. Its estimated value is approximately R2 million”, says Smith. The vehicle was donated to the City by a technological firm and was recently transferred to traffic services. Kashief George, who was one of the first people to move into Statice Heights, says although he harbours no malice to those who received deeds, he feels it is unfair that not everybody received theirs. “Council didn’t even have the decency to speak to us or explain when we will receive our papers,” says George, who lives in a house with his wife and three children. Before moving to Statice Heights four years ago, the family moved from pillar to post, living in different backyards.

Noach shares her new home with her daughter who has epilepsy, and says the receipt of her title deed has literally given her a new lease on life. “I feel so healthy and so excited to think I can call this place my home. Now I can be a real pensioner who sleeps in as late as she wants to and doesn’t have to worry about what the homeowners will think,” Noach jokes. Mayor Patricia de Lille personally handed over title deeds to the new homeowners last week. She said this piece of paper will not only enable the homeowners to access debt financing, but also open the door to other positive benefits “that enable community members to become full and productive members of society”. “Today’s formal handover of title deeds is a celebration of the commu-

CHRISTMAS arrived more than a month early for some residents in Statice Heights, Kewtown last week as they received the title deeds to their first homes. The City of Cape Town built 236 houses in Statice Heights as part of the Kewtown Infill Housing Project, which is specifically directed at addressing the housing backlog in the Athlone area. Hilda Noach (69), one of the 25 homeowners to receive their title deeds on Tuesday, says she never dreamt she would have a home to call her own after being on the housing waiting list for nearly three decades. “I moved with my children from one person’s backyard to the next and lost most of my belongings along the way,” a jubilant Noach

Barring love? A TOTAL of 17 babies are reportedly jailed with their mothers in this province. Correctional Services Inspecting Judge Vuka Shabalala has expressed concerns about the number of children raised in prisons. People’s Post interns Luzuko Zini and Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn polled readers to hear if mothers in prison should be allowed to have their babies with them or if they should be raised by next-of-kin or social services.

BETTER HOME: Shandray Lewis believes there should be a more suitable alternative for the baby. “They can put the child in a home where someone else can take care of it.”

GIVE THEM UP: Catherine Rabie says the answer is simple. “I think they should give the children up for adoption because prison is not good for the baby.”

MA MATTER TTER OF TIME: John Thomas says it should depend on the sentence being served. “If the mother is serving a long sentence, the father or a family member should have the child.”

MOTHERS’ CARE A PRIORITY: Erik Rienderhoff feels a child should always be with its mother, no matter where the mother is or what the circumstances are. “No one can care for a child the way a mother does; it is a mom thing.”

LAW STEP IN: Hayley Pieterse says having children in a prison is a bad idea. However, having grown up without a mother herself, she says she knows how traumatic that can be. “The law should care for children and incorporate a system that will best benefit the child.”

WHY PUNISH THE CHILD? Allistair Muller says he feels a child should not grow up in a prison as it would be taking their freedom away as well. He says it might leave scars for the child to grow up in such an environment. “To take away a child’s freedom is the biggest crime.”

NO EASY ANSWER: Philip van Niekerk says he is undecided. “If all those babies have to be given to social workers, the homes will fill up. It could also be that the children don’t get adopted. Then it would be better to have left them with the mother.”

Apply for a bursary today THE Muslim Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is calling on all matriculants or post-matric learners to apply for bursaries after raising more than R200 000 in this year’s fundraising drive. The bursary fund, now in its seventh year, has benefited 84 Muslim and nonMuslim students since 2006, and hopes to assist even more students from disadvantaged communities if it reaches its benchmark total of R1 million. MBC bursary panel convenor, Nijema Hayat, says the bursaries favour those hoping to enter the media industry. “The bursary fund targets specifically disadvantaged students and while it is open to all post-matric students regardless of which area they choose to study in, those who are in the field of media or Islamic studies will be given preference if they meet the other criteria,” she says. Bursary application forms are available at the Voice of the Cape studio in Salt River and Hayat urges students to complete these forms and to ensure that the institutions they will be studying at are registered. She adds applicants must also provide a motivation for their application. “This is something that students sometimes overlook. The stronger your motivation, the better your chances are. You also need a testimonial from the educational institution you hope to attend, as well as a testimonial from your imam or priest. If you are working, a testimonial from your employer will suffice,” she says. The committee will meet early next year again to consider this year’s matric results. Students who received MBC bursaries in the past must reapply for a bursary if needed, as they will not automatically requalify. For more information call Hayat after 18:00 on 0 083 321 2555 or email 2 nijemahayat@vocfm.co.za.

Take proper note of your money

IT has been two weeks since the unveiling of the new bank notes and already incidents of counterfeit notes have been reported.

The new notes, which proudly displays the face of former president Nelson Mandela, should have the following features: . A watermark of Madiba on the left when held in the light; . A watermark of the animal on the back when held in the light; . The denomination numeral which appears in micro-lettering in the animals next to Madiba.

L

IBERTY L I Q U O R S

It can only be seen through a magnifying glass; . Unique serial numbers are printed at the back of each note; . At the touch of the note, you should feel raised printing in certain areas; . There are raised lines at the bottom of the notes for the visually impaired; . A security thread will change colour when tilted; . The number at the bottom right is printed with colour-changing ink; and . When held horizontally to your eyes, the denomination numeral appears in the band below Madiba.

Joan Abrahams is literally a part of the furniture and has been teaching at Blossom Street Primary School for 41 years. She is usually the first person to arrive at the school before 07:00 and leaves long after the last learner after 17:00. She has seen four principals come and go and says she has taught here for so long because of her love of the school, its learners and staff.

“I have a love for teaching. This is not just a job but a God-given gift that I have been given. There is so much love at this school and I will miss all the hugs from learners and their smiles greeting me in the morning,” she says. Abrahams now teaches some of the grandchildren of the students she had at the beginning of her career. “I have seen three generations of families come through this school. These days, teaching is more challenging because children are much more inquisitive and informed about the world around them,” she says. She says the only reason she is retiring at the end of the year is that the law dictates that government employees retire at the age of 65. “I suppose its time for me to make way for younger people who need work,” she says. Abrahams has also been volunteering at Helderberg Hospice for 16 years and is affectionately known by her colleagues and learners as “Aunty Joan”. Abrahams was honoured by staff and former learners at a recent thanksgiving service at the Silvertown Baptist Church. Principal Michael Davids described Abrahams as the school’s very own Mother Theresa and says he cannot imagine the school without her. “This school owes you. You have given more than your fair share to make coming to this school a joy for all of us. You hold the symbolic keys to all the doors and gates of your Blossom Street Primary,” Davids said in his tribute.

The City of Cape Town has a policy that strictly forbids Solid Waste collection personnel from asking residents for Christmas boxes or donations, explains Mayoral Committee member for Utility Services, Shehaam Sims. “Problems have also arisen where people posing as City staff have asked for money, sometimes rudely and aggressively. They have also threatened that waste will not be collected if the demand is not met,” she says. “The City will not tolerate such behaviour from our own staff and have accordingly instructed all staff that soliciting for Christmas boxes and donations is discouraged.” If residents believe that excellent serv-

Who are you going to call?

THE City of Cape Town is to send customers acknowledgement via SMS or email when complaints are logged. To this end, the City’s Customer Relations Department has successfully launched a new functionality on the SAP C3 fault reporting system. Previously, when residents and businesses contacted the City call centre to report a fault or log a service request, the City gave them a reference number telephonically. This lengthy number was often difficult to record if a resident was calling from a hands-free mobile device in their car or did not have a pen and paper on hand. Customers contacting the call centre now are given the option of receiving the reference number via SMS or email. This option makes it more convenient for them to keep the reference number so that they can follow up on any outstanding service requests. This is the first phase of a two-phase initiative. In the second phase, the City will send a second SMS or email to the complainant when the request has been dealt with and has been closed on the SAP C3 system. “It is important that service requests and logged faults are acknowledged and attended to timeously,” says Mayco Member for Corporate Services, Demetri Qually.

WHEN driving the allnew Toyota Yaris 1.3 XR threedoor, you cannot help but smile and enjoy the comfort. The Toyota Yaris has everything you need to put your ambition on the map and get you on the road to success: robust perform ance, excellent agility and dynamic styling all backed by unbeata ble safety and quality. I hit the road in a bubblegum metallic Toyota Yaris and the sleek new design turned some heads – the car’s way. The Toyota Yaris lineup includes Xi, Xs and Xr models in either three or fivedoor configurations with the engine being equipped with Toyota Optimal Drive, which increases fuel efficiency without compromising performance. This awardwinning engine has a fivespeed manual transmission while the 1.3 litre, used in this test drive, has a sixspeed trans mission. The 1.3 litre engine has an impressive 73kw of power at 6000r/ min, electric power steering and a tight turning circle of 4.7m – one of the smallest in its class, which makes for nimble and re sponsive handling. The 1.3 XR threedoor model also features a supersize pano ramic moon roof with front and rear roller shades to give you a largerthanlife view of the world. All models are fitted with with highmount LED rear stop lamp and the 1.3 XR models have a front and rear spoiler which creates a sporty silhouette. Thrillaminute Landy experience TARRENLEE HABELGAARN

FEAR, fun, excitement and a rush of adrenaline awaits anyone taking on the Land Rover 4x4 Experience. The course, at Simonsig Wine Estate, is a thrill that will test both your sense of adventure and endurance. More advanced courses are offered – like intermediate, advanced and sand driving courses – but for rookies like myself and People’s Post advertising manager Belita Randall the introductory course was the way to go. The team at Land Rover Experience do not sell vehicles; they simply offer 4x4 enthusiasts and owners the opportunity to learn to use their vehicle to its full potential. Wynand Bohnen, our instructor at the Land Rover Experience, says: “Knowing the capability of your vehicle is important. Land Rover has found that when you understand how your vehicle works you are already 50% there with regards to 4x4 driving.”

Knowing your vehicle’s capability and function will help you know which function to apply in any situation or terrain, he adds. Whether it be mountain terrain, snow, sand or ruts you will be trained to apply the necessary function so that your vehicle can function at optimum level. “It was a hugely exciting experience,” says Randall, herself a 4x4 owner, as it “forces you to trust the vehicle that you are in. Car systems ‘talk’ with each other

TOYOTA has joined the ranks of manufacturers testing car safety systems that allow vehicles to communicate with each other.

presence of a pedestrian is triggered, a picture of an arrow popping up to indicate an approaching car at an intersection and an electronic voice saying: “It’s a red light,” if the driver was about to ignore a red light. Toyota officials said the smartcar technology it is developing will be tested on some Japanese roads starting in 2014. Toyota claims the technolo gy will be effective because half of car accidents happen at intersections. Toyota also showed a new feature that helps the driver brake harder to prevent bumping into the ve

The cars at the intelligent transport system site receive information from sensors and transmitters installed on the streets to minimise the risk of acci dents in situations such as missing a red traffic light, cars advancing from blind spots and pedestri ans crossing the street. The system’s warning indicators include a beep ing sound in the car and an image of a person pop ping up on a screen in front of the driver when the

system even knows when the driver pushes on the accelerator by mistake instead of the brakes, and will stop automatically. Rearend collisions make up 34% of car acci dents in Japan, comprising the biggest category, followed by headon collisions at 27%. Cars that stop and go on their own, avoiding acci dents, are not pure science fiction, experts say. Alberto Broggi, professor at the University of Par ma and an expert on intelligent transportation sys tems, said the idea of the accidentfree cars is “very hot”, and probably within reach on some roads within several years. “I’m sure we will arrive to such a technology even if I don’t know when exactly,” he said. –Wheels24

Toyota said the technology will be available “soon,” without giving a date, and hinted it will be offered for Lexus luxury models. Luxury models al ready offer similar safety features such as auto matic braking. Technology involving precise sen sors remains expensive, sometimes costing as much as a cheaper Toyota car. The automaker also developed sonar sensors that help drivers avoid crashing in parking lots. One

Added value makes Hayabusa soar

DAVE FALL

SHE’S A BEAUT! Suzuki’s new Hayabusa.

ANOTHER chapter in the legend of the world’s fastest superbike is about to be written with the announcement of a couple of important new features on Suzuki’s Hayabusa. The idea is to keep the bike at the top of the tree for the 2013 model year. For me, it’s hard to believe Suzuki’s celebrated superbike (named after the Japanese Peregrine falcon) has been with us for nearly 13 years – but it has. Image gallery That’s right, it was more than a dec ade ago, back in 1999, that Suzuki shook the bike world with the announce ment of the ’Busa, a bike that combined massive thrust, unmatched manoeuvra bility and a silkysmooth ride on city streets or the open road. Just like a heavyweight boxer, it’s muscular yet surprisingly agile. While riders rarely need to call on its full punch off the line, the superabun dant power and fleetfooted perform ance inspire confidence in everyday rid ing. If you ever needed more tangible proof of it being the fastest standard production superbike yet made it’s worth recalling that at the inaugural South African speed trials held at Haks teen Pan near Upington in the Northern Cape a few weeks ago only two motorcy

cles managed to go faster than 300km/ h barrier: a pair of Hayabusas! Beneath that sweptback design beats that glorious Suzuki Hayabusa motor. The resonating feel of pure power evokes an attitude of bold authority from both machine and rider. Through many engineering refinements of the original design, the Hayabusa spirit has en

dured. Its incomparable performance deliv ers a fun and sporty ride at any speed, setting the bar high for rivals and defin ing “the ultimate sport bike”. I well remember taking a roadtest unit to a Buffalo Rally in Aliwal North back in 1999, taking in a near country wide trip of nearly 1800km over that

long weekend. The bike was certainly the quickest I’d ever ridden; factor in some of the world’s best biking roads between KZN and the Eastern Cape and you have a ride that sits well in this bik er’s memory. That restrained, refined energy is the presence that turns heads when a Haya busa and rider pass.

FREE EXPERT ADVICE

During its short history the ’Busa has evolved yet stayed true to its concept – the very pinnacle of highperformance motorcycles. Its sensational power, speed, smooth ride and overwhelming presence continue to fascinate owners and onlookers. Using what is widely regarded as the best braking componentry on the mar ket, the 2013 GSX1300R Hayabusa now has Brembo Monoblock calipers with a new lightweight antilock braking system as standard that will confidently rein in the potentially ballistic speed of the bike. The system will give future riders way greater confidence. Fast as it is, the Hayabusa is equally at home on the highways or city streets. The low centre of gravity that lets it con quer winding roads also makes Hayabu sa a nimble urban predator. Then there’s its highquality finish and attention to detail. The bold design also gives it a unique aura and formidable presence not found on other bikes. Whatever, the new features men tioned above are sure to appeal to lone riders cruising the highway as well as touring couples. . Offered in three new colour schemes, the revised Hayabusa should reach South African showrooms as early as the first quarter of 2013, but the price still has to be officially calculated. – Wheels24

Technology gives oomph to Honda hybrid HONDA has pioneered a new lightweight and compact onemotor hybrid system for small vehi cles, called the sports hybrid intelligent dual clutch drive system. This new hybrid system will be the latest addition to the Earth Dreams Technology series of new gen eration powertrain technology that combines driv ing performance and high levels of fuel efficiency. Together with the sport hybrid intelligent multi mode drive for midsized vehicles and the sport hy brid super handling – all wheel drive, the newlyde veloped sport hybrid intelligent dual clutch drive will join the lineup of three systems that can ac commodate different vehicle sizes and characteris tics, the automaker says. Honda claims this new system will offer high lev els of fuel efficiency and acceleration that is more powerful than that of existing models to ensure driver enjoyment and performance is not sacri ficed. It combines a newlydeveloped inline fourcylin der 1.5litre Atkinson cycle engine with a seven speed DCT2 system. The builtin highoutput motor and lithiumion battery improve efficiency by more than 30% compared to a conventional onemotor

hybrid system, the automaker said. According to Honda, the combination of the one motor hybrid system and the engine offers sporty driving during acceleration and highspeed cruising by using the clutches to engage the engine. Electric vehicle driving is utilised during start up and low to mediumspeed cruising by using the clutches to disengage the engine. This system contributes to the improvement of fuel efficiency by increasing energy regeneration using the clutches to disengage the engine during deceleration. The automaker claims this hybrid system achieves the world’s highest efficiency by combin ing a newlydeveloped engine dedicated for hybrid vehicles a new 2.0litre Atkinson cycle engine, an electric CVT coupled with two builtin motors and a lockup clutch with a lithiumion battery. It also includes a system that can switch modes to match driving styles and situations. Outline of the system The system switches the operation among the following three driving modes depending on driving conditions and the battery charge level: EV Drive: for driving by the electric motor using

NEW BEGINNING: Honda is focused on updating vehicle technology. electricity from the battery and regeneration during deceleration. Engine Drive: for mediumto highspeed cruising with the engine and axle directly connected by a lockup clutch and engine power is mechanically transferred to the wheels. Hybrid Drive: for urban driving and powerful ac celeration using the motor with electricity generat ed by the engine. This hybrid system, which is also suitable as a plugin hybrid system, will be installed to the North American version of the Accord, scheduled to be introduced in January. According to the manufacturer, the combination

of a V6 engine and this highoutput threemotor sys tem achieves acceleration performance equivalent to that of a V8 with fuel efficiency better than that of an inline fourcylinder engine. A new V6 3.5litre directinjection engine is in stalled in the front of the vehicle and combined with a newlydeveloped sevenspeed DCT system with a builtin motor. This Honda technology uses two motors installed in the rear to control torque distri bution to the right and left rear wheels. These latest advancements in electric vehicle technologies further progress Honda towards mak ing the Sport Hybrid, such as the forthcoming new NSX model, a reality. – Wheels24

Motoring matters in brief

THE Ford Ranger has won the International Pick-Up Award 2013. This makes it the third international award the US automaker has won in 2012. Judges ranked the new Ranger based on its performance, engine line-up, payload and towing capability. The bakkie was tested at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, England. The Izuzu D-Max and Volkswagen Amarok were placed second and third respectively. Jarlath Sweeney, a judge on the panel, said: “The Ford Ranger is a great all-rounder, combining the perfect blend of on-road comfort and stability with off-road capability.” Paul Randle, vehicle line director of Ford Europe, said: “The Ranger is great for work and great for leisure, and customers will appreciate the difference as soon as they get behind the wheel. “This prestigious award is testament to the work of our global product teams and there is plenty more to look forward to with the launch of the all-new Transit and all-new Transit Connect in 2013.” Ford has also scooped the 2012 International Engine of the Year for its 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine as well as the International Van

of the Year 2013 (new Transit Custom). ) A report from the European Commission released earlier in 2012 indicates that driving on under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by as much as 4%, halve the tyre’s life – and possibly kill you. The commission adds that almost five million tons of CO2 are created by vehicles running on under-inflated rubber. Experts have also warned that soft tyres can affect vehicle stability to the point of crashing. Bridgestone, in a survey of 38 000 vehicles across nine European countries, found 71% of cars had under-inflated tyres. European online tyre retailer Delticom provided this example: “Riding a bicycle with incorrectly inflated tyres requires much more personal energy to move the bicycle forward. The same applies to your car, using excessive fuel and creating extra CO2 emissions.” Experts recommend regular tyre-pressure and tread-depth checks – at least once a month – and frequent checks of their general condition, including the spare in the boot. The tyre pressures for your car should be available on the driver’s door jamb or in the handbook. – Wheels24

Off-roadster brings versatility LIAM MOSES

THE adage “looks can be deceiving” applies perfectly to the Daihatsu Terios OffRoad. While the compact, shortwheelbase offroader is no ugly stepsister in the aesthetic department, at first glance few would expect it to match the capabilities of the larger and more costly 4x4s on the market. Surprisingly, it does just that and in many ways surpasses the competition. The Terios OffRoad is as comfortable on smooth tar as it is on uneven ground, and it han dled both surfaces well during the test drive. The potholes and ridges of Main Road Diep Riv er seemed nonexistent and the bumpy, undulat ing terrain of a field in Roscommon Road were also no match. Standing at 10cm shy of 1,7m tall and just over 4m long, it is relatively small for a 4x4. But in this case, that smaller stature could be viewed as a positive factor when taking into ac count the everincreasing cost of fuel and the ver satility of the vehicle. The OffRoad was released in 2010 as a suped up and toughenedup version of the regular Terios and has several improvements on the standard car, including a freeflow exhaust, sidestep, bull bar and fog lamps.

It also offers increased power, with the kilowatt output upped to 90 from the 77 of the standard model. Dynamite, in this case, comes in a small package. Despite the increased power and weight added to the car by the extras, the fuel economy has not suffered too badly and the 1.5l engine con sumes around 8l of petrol per 100km, only 0,6l more than the standard vehicle. The car has all the bells and whistles and comes standard with a DVD player, GPS, aircon, power steering, roof racks, alarm, electric win dows, electric mirrors, heightadjustable lenses in the head lights, Bluetooth connectivity and sever al other features. Another added benefit to the car is that it is manufactured by Toyota and comes with the same engine as an Avanza VVT. The Terios can climb a curb just as well as it climbs an incline and still fit into the tighter park ing spaces, making it useful for anyone who spends time in both the city and country. Although the R284 995 price tag could scare off potential buyers, the features mean that it could be value for money to anyone with an active lifestyle.

Mounting pressure for car dealers in the coming year THE relatively good times of 2012 for the local automotive industry are unlikely to continue in 2013, according to TransUnion Auto Information Solutions. Major dealer groups have seen financial results improve, with new vehicle sales up by 10% compared to 2011, continuing cost control and a decline in debt. Carel Martin, spokesman for TransUn ion, said: “But all is not rosy as dealer con fidence levels are decreasing when com pared to those seen over the past 18 months.” “There is good reason for this, as con sumer debt continues to grow and reports indicate that households are experiencing further strain.” Other factors which could pressure the industry included rising fuel prices, toll fees for Gauteng drivers, and stabilising vehicle sales volumes. Continued support programmes from manufacturers, coupled with low interest rates, could potentially

boost consumer credit demand. Low price increases for 2012, which contributed to growth, were unlikely to be sustained in 2013 as the Rand weakens and input costs increase. Martin predicted continuing pressure for used car dealers, who were selling used vehicles below the recommended retail price in an attempt to counter price dis counts and incentives offered by the new vehicle market. Gross margins in the used vehicle mar ket appeared to have stabilised after the average percentage gap between trade and retail values reached its lowest level in the past four years. Martin said: “Given the current market conditions, based on positive trends, con stant supply and relative price stability seen in 2012, we can expect 2013 to deliv er some growth, although it should be less than what we’ve seen in the past two years.” – Wheels24.

BURN: Members of the congregation poured ghee (liquid butter), herbs and sandalwood onto the flames as part of the ceremony,

Hard pressed IT WAS ONLY a matter of time before farm labourers would throw in the towel. Or strike. That hour has arrived. Farmworkers in this province have for ages been scurrying at the bottom of the labour legislation pit, subserviently accepting the scraps from many a wine farmer’s table. They have been ignored, treated with indignity, and “paid” with the produce of grape farms. The so-called dop stelsel has ensured slavery of another kind: to the bottle. It has also, in another sense, managed to ensure farm labourers remain just that: farmworkers, with little or no chance to escape. And so, for centuries, they have been denied basic human rights – a roof over their heads which does not leak, a decent, living income and dignity – to keep turning the wheels of the wine industry. On the outside, this is a glamorous industry which produces the goods for the enjoyment of the upper classes. There is no harm in this. The harm comes when this industry expects its workers to be contented with a menial day wage. It is not only the wine industry which employs labourers. All the produce on the retail shelves have been planted, cherished into growth, plucked, packaged and carted by farm workers. They deserve more than the R80 daily rate some are paid. Not all labourers are getting the short end of the salary stick. Some farmers have admirably gone out of their way to ensure their workers are living in creature comforts taken for granted by the consumers. These actions are to be commended. While some farmers are worried at how they will stay afloat paying labourers R150 a day, the question to ask is rather: in a world where every person had a right to choose their work, who would remain to work for such a rate? One suspects few hands would be raised at such an opportunity.

Praying for Praying the hun hungry gry Democracy is equal to freedom OUR politics should be liberty. Freedom. Nothing else. Too many of our politicians and public servants are hard at work, weaving a horribly enslaving web of bureaucracy – all red tape, regulations and restrictions. It pains to see Joe Public legislatively told he cannot be trusted to think, act and provide for himself and his family without imperilling everyone and everything around him. To be sure, it is a matter of “us” and “them”, and our interests are last on their minds. This is evidenced unequivocally in the manner in which they ravenously devour the excesses offered by the ministerial handbook, but in turn aggressively defend the inferior quality of service delivery in many municipalities. It has become critical for us as the general public to realise the more self-sustaining freedom we have the less self-enriching influence they wield.

Perish the thought that libertarian considerations will trump their voracious appetites for financial relish or power. Their particular brand of freedom has less to do with carefree and freedom of association, and more to do with fiefdom and domination. This will change neither soon nor voluntarily. It is obvious to many that our preponderance of laws and our brilliant constitutional safeguards have proved ineffectual, toothless and generally inconsequential. How sad that a much-lauded democracy should lend itself to such undemocratic abuses. The time to rein in our elected government officials is now. Their insatiable lust after public coffer largesse is disturbing, to say the least, but it is further frenzied by our five-year term of office limit. And South Africa’s biggest tender-trough can and will not ever be big enough. VERNON WAGNER

Don’t shun shun us for being being HIV HIV-pos -posit itive ive I RECENTLY watched The Shunning and I realised that everyday someone is being shunned. They are either too tall, short, fat, thin, other nationality (or) gay. The list continues. I’m HIV+ and have never been shunned by my family, friends, neighbours or even strangers and if I’ve been, I’ve never noticed. Why? I was only surrounded by people who love and care about me. Today I cry because somewhere in this world a brother or sister of mine is being discriminated against. Why? Not because of their colour, race, length, weight, nationality or sexuality.

They are shunned because of the blood that flows through all of our veins. We are not different, we are all Homo sapiens, so please don’t discriminate and stigmatise us. The mere fact that you are shunning us, is killing us. Be our family, friends, neighbours and many lives would be saved. How? We will adhere to our treatment, live healthily and will even see our grandchildren grow old. HIV is not death row, but denialism is. Stop the shunning now! NAME WITHHELD

SOME months ago I wrote about the need to address food security in our country. Myself and others proposed planting vegetable gardens on the roofs of buildings and using open land in the Western Cape. We cannot bear the burden of the ever-increasing cost of living and the main culprits are food and electricity increases. Unless those in power resolve the call of the nation at grassroots level we are staring a social revolution in the face. Those in power should start listening now while there is still time, and not later when they want to run with delegations, commissions and promises to address the call of desperation. The plight of our citizens is desperate. The way things are being done has to be revised. Laws have to be changed with regard to labour and work opportunities, and aggressive agricultural plans with tight time frames have to be implemented to ensure food security and food prices come down to let us live. To the man on the street the electricity hikes to prevent load shedding just do not add up. Those funds can be found at other reserves and not the almost empty pockets of the community. My appeal to our very silent anointed and appointed is to lead the hungry and angry flock forward in prayer on their knees for a spiritual solution. KEITH ALFRED ADOLPH BLAKE

Industry transformation essential ADVERTORIAL: Key players in the real estate industry will speak at the final member meeting of the National Property Forum (NPF) Western Cape this week. The speakers include Bryan Chap log (Acting CEO EAAB); advocate Tas well Papier (Administrator EAAB); and Leo Mlambo (NPF National Chair person). The event is on Friday 23 November, from 9:00 to noon, at Shop 11, Nobel Park Shopping Centre, Old Paarl Road (opposite Sanbel Building), Bellville. Registration is from 9:00. The NFP appeals to all real estate agents and principals to attend. Seats are limited. RSVP tomorrow via email to charles@ceprop.co.za or call (021) 762 9992 during office hours. The NPF comprises property profes sionals who are committed to creating sound business concepts and solu tions, while establishing exclusive re lationships with all stakeholders, based on mutual respect and integrity. The nonracial organisation is open to all realtors in the industry who sub scribe to its constitution and values. It intends to form strategic alliances with a variety of independent service providers such as financial institu tions, conveyancers and mortgage originators to ensure the delivery of innovative and efficient client services that are affordable. The NPF will aim to be an authorita tive voice of the real estate industry, representing members on all major platforms nationally and internation ally. Due to historical injustices of the past, transformation of the industry is a major strategic imperative. The NPF will lobby all roleplayers in the indus try – including government, EAAB and the Services SETA – to ensure NPF members benefit equally from this multibillion rand industry.

The NPF is committed to the crea tion of job opportunities by ensuring school leavers are able to consider the real estate industry as a viable profes sion. It is committed to take hands with all roleplayers in the industry, includ ing financial institutions, EAAB, Services SETA, conveyancers and oth er roleplayers in assisting with the fa cilitation of development programmes for our members as well as aspirant new entrants. The NPF is geared to establish effec tive representative national network of independent estate agencies and professionally qualified real estate professionals. Projects which will capacitate mem bers to grow their enterprises and will be identified and facilitated by the NPF, therefore contributing to the goals of the Property Charter by creat ing employment opportunities for the historically disadvantaged individu als. The NPF will also play a significant role in facilitating the dedicated train ing for its members to ensure signifi cant broad based transformation on a national basis. The NPF is an association devoted to serving the interest of all practition ers regardless of colour, race, creed or gender across all sectors throughout all the provinces of South Africa. The association is founded on evi dence that there are a tremendous number of property practitioners who are in need of a collective voice and a platform to address their concerns as well as to further the interests of their particular industry. Through innovative funding sourc es, including grants and member con tributions, the Forum is set to become a new force in the SMME sector which will address the injustices of the past in the real estate industry.

WP Cricket defends selections LIAM MOSES

THE general manager of Western Province Cricket has defended the make-up of the union’s junior teams ahead of their participation in a major national tournament. The squads were named in May, after a lengthy selection process which started in October 2011 and will reassemble soon to take part in the provincial youth tournaments in December. Southern suburbs schools traditionally dominate in the player selection stakes – which draws criticism and allegations of bias from across the province – and cricketers from those schools are again the vast majority this year. However, Nabeal Dien, head of amateur cricket at the WP Cricket, says players from all schools in the province are given the same consideration by the union’s selectors. “Our boys schools have the resources to offer bursaries to good cricketers from all areas. If you look at the make-up of the sides and the history of their boys, you will find they came from townships and all areas,” Dien states. “If you take Wynberg or Rondebosch, the Wynberg first team has more players of colour than white players. It’s not a question of that any longer.” Dien adds the “independent” and “comprehensive” selection process starts with 22 000 youth players from across the Peninsula, and is then whittled down to A and B sides for the under-13, under-15, under-17 and under19 age groups. He says criticism of team selections is normal at any level and will not affect the process in any way. “As long as we believe we are doing the right thing, then that criticism must come. It’s normal and will continue.” This year players from Pinelands High , Fish Hoek High, St Joseph’s Marist College and SACS have all been selected in under-17 and under-19 teams, but the vast majority of

the 13-player squads are made up of cricketers from Wynberg and Rondebosch Boys’ High School. The under-19 side is made up of four Wynberg and five Rondebosch players, and the under-17 team has three and five players from each of those respective schools. Wynberg and Rondebosch have produced some of the country’s best cricketers, and can boast legendary Proteas all-rounder Jacques Kallis and current coach Gary Kirsten. Dien comments the schools’ financial resources and ability to attract players from other schools with bursaries will ensure they stay on top, unless schools in previously disadvantaged areas can start to match their facilities. “We can’t stop it. The only thing we can do – and it’s not in our hands alone – is to create schools with those facilities,” says Dien. “We must get schools that are equivalent to those schools. At the moment I can tell you there is an attempt to do that at Spine Road High.” Dien adds players from schools in previously disadvantaged areas still make it into the system despite the imbalance of resources and gave Vernon Philander, JP Duminy, Rory Kleinveldt, Qaasim Adams and Farhaan Behardien as examples. The under-17 youth tournament will be hosted by the WP from Wednesday 12 to Sunday 16 December, while the under-19 tournament will take place in Potchefstroom from Sunday 16 to Wednesday 21 December. The squads are: Under-17: Matthew Christensen, Brandon Clacher, Jason Fourie, Chad Johnson, Brydon Karstens, Yolisa Mona, Lyle Rogers, Riaz Sader, Kay Skovgaard-Petersen, Jay Stevens, Tyler Sylvester, Devon Van Rensberg, Nicki Zeeman, Manny Senger (coach) and Bevil Velensky (manager). Under-19: David Bedingham, Dale Brander, Dawood Christians, Clyde Fortuin, Dayyaan Galiem, Imtiyaaz Groenewald, Zubayr Hamza, Alexander Mather, Soya Pono, Jason Smith, Keagan Smith, Hayes Van Der Berg, Bryan Vorster, Clinton Ravens (coach) and Johannes Adams (manager).

Mixed results in SAB League over the weekend LIAM MOSES

BATTSWOOD FC fought their way off the bottom of the SAB League table when they claimed a narrow victory over Du Noon Academy at Johnson Road Sports Complex on Saturday. Battswood went into the match in last place (16th), on one point, after losing all but one of the six games they had played. The Wynberg club have now climbed up one place after scoring late in the second half to bag a 1-0 win and all three points. Manenberg side Orient FC have also moved

up the table following their own moraleboosting victory. Orient beat a youthful Engen Santos FC side 2-0, to move up from ninth to sixth. Orient have now won three games, drawn two and lost two. Oriental Gunners held on to third place despite a surprise 2-0 defeat against Junction Rovers. Gunners, from Athlone, went into the game having suffered only one loss, while Rovers had lost two, drawn one and won three matches. The game finished with Rovers as 2-0 victors and saw them climb from fourth to third. Lotus River side Heath Athletic also succumbed to defeat on Saturday, losing 2-0

The victory was the first this season after three draws and three defeats, while Express have lost three, drawn two and won two. Tribes FC moved up two places to seventh on the table after their 2-0 victory over Young Idols, who remained in 11th place. to log leaders Zeesha FC. Heath went into the game in third after three wins and two draws, but has now dropped down to seventh after suffering their second loss. Zeesha now lead the log on 19 points, with a draw earlier this season as the only blemish on their otherwise perfect record. Leeds Lentegeur have jumped up from fifth to fourth after a 1-0 win over Silver Spurs, who held onto 12th place. The Mitchell’s Plain side have now drawn one, lost two and won four this season, while Spurs record stands at three losses, three draws and a solitary victory.

Walmers wrangle in Community Cup SK WALMERS have hit back at their detractors after the club’s selection for the South African Rugby Union (Saru) Community Cup raised eyebrows amongst local rugby fans. SKW were selected ahead of Hamiltons for the tournament, which replaces the National Club Championship next year, even though they finished below their neighbour on the 2012 Super League A table. Durbanville-Bellville qualified for the tournament automatically as the highest open (non-university) team on the log after finishing second. Many believe Hamiltons, South Africa’s oldest rugby club, should have been selected to join them as the city’s representatives at the tournament However, Moneeb Levy, vicepresident of SKW, says the team’s performances the past season should be looked at in context. “You must look at what we have and what Hamiltons has. With the amount of money they pump in, a team like Hamiltons should win the league every year,” he says. “This year alone SK never played one game at home. The Track was unavailable all year. Even if they

“If you look at the Super League A now, if you take away Maties, UCT and Victorians, we have been competing in the league the longest,” says Levy. “It will be our eighth year in succession; people don’t know that. What people tend to forget is that we have played in the National Club Championships thrice and we won the plate trophy for two years.” A Saru spokesperson, whose name is known to People’s Post, says several factors were taken into account when selecting the teams. “Unions were asked to nominate, but the decision on wild cards was taken by the games and policies committee and the executive committee,” he said. “The criteria used were not strictly on league position, but on a range of factors such as a team’s ability to add value to the tournament through their general appeal, their ability to draw crowds, to promote and develop the game among all South Africans, to ensure the Community Cup is commercially viable and sustainable, to take the game to new markets and areas of the country and to serve the transformation objectives of Saru.” Levy adds the tournament will also help to secure possible sponsorships for the club.

have the Green Point Track, they only get it from 1 April. (During) pre-season we must train everywhere. “Maybe Hamiltons are more consistent but the challenges they have are different to what we have. Under the circumstances we do extremely well.” Hamiltons finished the league in third place this season, with 62 points, after 12 wins and six losses. SK Walmers, meanwhile, were fifth at the end of the season, on 48 points, after nine victories and nine losses. In head-to-head competition this year, the teams have each won one of the two games played. Hamiltons won their home game 27-22 in May, while SKW won their home game 15-12 in June. Hamiltons president David Kagan says his club do not feel harddone by the decision. “We wish them well and may it be a wonderful tournament,” he comments. “We have no problems, because we obviously didn’t meet the criteria. It’s not up to us to question whether criteria is right or wrong – they were awarded a spot.” Levy did not know Saru’s criteria for selection to the tournament, but believes his side deserves to be there for several reasons.
