Breaking news in 2011 REYANA STEYN

W

ITH the year almost over, People’s Post has remained at the forefront of breaking news in Athlone, consistently investigating and challenging, and producing compelling articles. The paper reported on many residents who stood together to eliminate crime. Bokmakierie residents held various meetings and marches in a eradicate drugs, gangsterism and shebeens (“Bokmakierie takes a stand,” 26 April.) Fed-up residents began reporting activities in the area, which led to arrests of many suspects. Various organisations, local police and community members intervened to help youth and get them involved in positive activities. Various stories which we couldn’t help but be touched by were about those many elderly people who were brutally killed. One which stands out is William Fredericks (70), who was viciously beaten to death when he awoke to find an intruder in his Bridgetown home. The stranger beat Fredericks with his own walking stick, a chair and whatever was in his reach. When his daughter also came to assist, the suspect beat her too. Fredericks

died from his injuries, his daughter was taken to hospital. (“Pensioner beaten to death,” 31 May.) Robbers also targeted many businesses. The owner of Dickey’s Meat Market in Surrey Estate, Abdullah Daware (62), was shot dead when four men stormed into the shop and robbed the place. (‘“Senseless’ killing in store, 22 March.”) Residents also had a chance to vote in the local elections earlier this year, with many new candidates taking over the reins and implementing what they thought would work for the community (“DA snatches key ANC ward,” 24 May.) The paper also reported for two consecutive weeks on the Surrey Estate Neighbourhood Watch, which was taking money from the community for their services. On investigation it was discovered that the organisation had no right to do so. The local police and the Community Policing Forum jumped into action and meetings were held to sort out the problem (“Unease over patrol grows,” 21 June.) Another investigative story was the Rondebosch East woman accused of running a multimillion rand jewellery scam which affected hundreds. Ferial Mohamed-Bobat (53), coowner of Damjee Jewellers, was arrested and

charged with numerous cases of theft and fraud after 84 cases were opened against her in connection with the loss of priceless family heirlooms, with the estimated value of a whopping R20,2 million. She was released on R25 000 bail on Friday 30 September after she appeared in court. (“Million rand scam exposed”, 20 September). During the 16 Days of Activism, a Manenberg man stabbed his wife to death and then tried to kill himself by slitting his own throat. He survived and was arrested while he was in hospital (“Man kills wife,” 6 December.) The Pooke se Bos informal settlement remains up in arms as they still battle to receive electricity, but in the latest edition it was revealed that the City would not be able to place electricity on the privately owned land on which their homes are based. The community called for President Jacob Zuma to come and see them, but they have heard nothing. (“Pooke se Bos is powerless,” 13 September.) The uplifting stories included those about youngsters who pursued their dreams despite their circumstances and achieved greatness, such as members of the Bridgetown Theatre Company, the Eoan Group, School of Performing Arts, Stage Cruise and many more who staged concerts and plays, giving hope to other youth.

Silky smooth ideas will aid economy SPOIL someone this Christmas and buy them something in African silk that has been locally made and will positively impact South Africa’s job creation agenda. The silk can be bought from Tsakani House, which was the first silk producing and manufacturing company in South Africa. The company pioneered the concept of African silk and launched the first silk duvet in 1994. The Tsakani product range includes both wild and cultivated silk products. “The silks are hand spun, woven, dyed, painted and unique in character, unlike silk produced elsewhere in the world,” says Moeka Ellis, the owner of Tsakani House. “Wild African silk is derived from the Gonometa Postica, a species endemic to the desert regions of Southern Africa. The cocoons are harvested in Acacia veld of the Kalahari. The silk is fawn coloured, textured with a soft sheen.” Their product range includes cotton on silk duvets, silk on silk duvets, summer silk quilts, silk pillows, silk bed linen, silk blankets, silk clothing, hand woven silk scarves and stoles, hand woven silk décor products, hand painted silk accessories and silk teddy bears. Tsakani House has appeared and received recognition for its products in several national and local publications and TV programmes as well as receiving the 2009 National Craft Award for excellence in textiles. Ellis says Tsakani House started the business with three full time workers and 16 part time crafts people and has since grown.

She says challenges faced include the economic downturn, which influenced their turn-over negatively. “The support of our existing client base is very crucial to maintaining a steady income,” she says. “New clients are becoming fewer, as Tsakani is a niche brand in silk products and appeals to upper income groups and the tourist trade.” The business chose to become a Proudly South African member because it felt it was bringing a unique South Africa product profile to Proudly South African. “South African crafts people operate on the fringes of our economy and Tsakani strives to bring them into the fold by creating work opportunities and thus gets to showcase their talent.” She urged people to follow their dreams. “South Africans can do it for themselves. We have the talent and the creativity to produce world class products, so buy proudly.” Regarding job creation, sshe said: “We have so much untapped talent. Reinstate the textile/clothing manufacturing to South Africa – we cannot compete with cheap Asian imports, which are destroying our textile industry and valuable jobs.”

Greasy problem costing the city R60m FATS, cooking oils, grease, food scrapings or leftovers placed in the sink have been identified as causing huge blockages in the sewage system. The City incurs around R60 million annually to clear sewer blockages across the city, many of which are caused by these substances. The City says attempts to dissolve the substances by pouring boiling water down the sink doesn’t work as they will solidify further down the pipeline. This results in: . Blocked sewers . Sewer pump failures . Sewage overflows . Damage to municipal infrastructure . Reduced efficiency of wastewater treatment facility (hence the infrastructure’s high operation and maintenance costs.) . Unhygienic and unhealthy conditions in contravention of the City’s environmental health by-laws, which state that no person must cause or allow any land or premises, that he is responsible for, to become so foul and filthy that it poses a health risk. The Water Pollution Control Unit of the Water and Sanitation Department appeals to businesses to assist in reducing or eradicat-

ing these problems by: . Ensuring that all foreign objects are disposed of in refuse bins/skips. . Scraping leftovers into a refuse bin before washing the plates, pans and utensils. . Arranging that oil be collected by a licensed waste contractor and keeping disposal certificates handy for at least two years for inspection purposes. . Installing grease traps in all premises engaged in the cooking and preparation of food for other persons. This can be discussed with Water Pollution Control inspectors. . Regularly maintaining grease traps and related equipment. Businesses are also requested to assist by reporting broken/missing gully grids, rodding eyes and manhole covers to the call centre below. For more information and complaints contact the call centre on 0860 10 30 89 or sms 31373 or email waterTOC@capetown.gov.za For all industrial effluent discharge-related problems or advice, call the Water Pollution Control Inspectorate on (021) 684-1042/76.

Armed men rob shopkeepers REYANA STEYN

I

MAGINE having a gun pointed at you, not knowing whether you are going to live or die. This is what happened to an Athlone businessman when armed men stormed into his shop. The incident happened on Tuesday at 20:00, when the men robbed the shop of R10 000 cash, an undisclosed amount of airtime vouchers and other goods. “My brother and I were locking up when two men walked into the store,” says the owner of the shop, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of the robbers coming back. “They pointed guns at us. They demanded the money and we gave them cash. They then took a DVD, airtime vouchers, our cellphones and 25 cartons of cigarettes.” The owner says the incident only lasted “a few minutes, but it felt like forever”. “My brother and I were both in shock and I didn’t know if they were going to shoot us. This is the first time that our store has been robbed in the two years we

have been in Athlone. These men knew exactly what they were doing.” He hopes that the men will be arrested and brought to justice. During the incident no shots were fired and no one injured. According to the owner, the men fled in two cars, which were waiting outside while the robbery took place. Athlone police have warned business owners to safeguard themselves as robberies are increasing due to the festive season. Zita Norman, Athlone police spokesperson, says all business owners must ensure that their businesses are safe and have all the proper security measures in place. “We urge all business owners to ensure that their businesses have alarms, security gates – anything that will keep their business and themselves safe.” The owner says: “After this incident we will definitely be putting more security measures in place to ensure that a robbery like this doesn’t happen again.” Anyone with information is urged to call the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Mario Florence, on (021) 6979200.

SAFETY CHECK: Major General Robbie Roberts, police commissioner of the Nyanga policing cluster, which covers Athlone, Manenberg, Lansdowne, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Philippi and Philippi East, called a special meet ing with police officers and the community to ensure that all measures have been put in place to ensure a safe festive season. “The community is now fully aware that every security measure will be put into place from SAPS’ side to ensure that the areas remain safe,” says Lieutenant Ian Bennett, Manenberg police spokes person. “During the meeting General Roberts also wished all the communities well over the festive season and a great New Year.”

He contacted the police. “According to her husband, the woman suffered from Alzeimers,” said Lieutenant Ian Bennett, Manenberg police spokesperson. “He had left earlier for work and on returning he made the discovery. The woman was dressed in her underwear and on closer investigation officers saw an open cut and that her organs had been removed.” Police found her organs in a

bucket next to the bed. There had been no forced entry into the house and all valuables were accounted for. “An inquest docket has been opened and police are investigating,” says Bennett. “At this stage, no foul play is suspected.” Anyone with information can contact Manenberg police station on (021) 699-9400 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Golden rules of safety REYANA STEYN

MANENBERG police are urging parents to ensure their children’s safety by equipping them with the necessary skills to protect themselves. This message is imperative as school holidays are now in full swing. Brigadier Andre van Dyk, Manenberg police station commissioner, says children and teenagers need to be kept occupied so they do not get involved in wrong activities such as gangs, drugs and alcohol. “With school holidays here, all measures need to be put in place for our children to be safe. Children should always be in a safe environment and well looked after at all times.” Van Dyk says there are various children holiday programmes available in all communities. He says police will do their best to protect all children, but the responsibility lies with parents too. “Children should not be allowed to walk alone and unsupervised in malls and areas where they could fall prey.” Parents should check on their children to ensure they are supervised by responsible and trusted adults. “Child abuse remains a major priority and it is also found that abuses are taking place in the comfort and security of homes, making it very difficult for police to curb,” he says. “If any adults spot children who are un-

supervised and in danger, even if they are not their children, they should take action and protect that child.” All children should know and follow these five “golden rules” to safeguard themselves: . Do not get into a stranger’s car. . Do not take sweets, money or toys from a stranger. . Do not open doors to strangers. . Always tell your parents or guardians where you are going and when you will be back . Do not allow anybody to touch your body in places that make you feel uncomfortable; if anyone tries, tell somebody. “Incidents of any abuse must be reported by children and teenagers; children should also know the difference between a long-term friend and a short-term acquaintance, so they don’t get confused and think it’s okay when they are abused,” says Van Dyk. Parents who discover that their children are involved in illegal activity should seek help and assistance. “The police are here to help, and we will be able to give guidance,” says Van Dyk. “We would like to build a partnership that will ensure the safety of all children and women – to stop mothers from seeing their children being murdered and to ensure that every child knows they are part of the great people of the area.” To report crimes against children or for any assistance, contact Manenberg Police Station on (021) 699-9400 or your nearest police station, or call 10111.

R20m jewellery case postponed Damjee Jewellers outlets in Rylands and Cavendish Square in Claremont had closed, allegedly due to bankruptcy, and that Athlone officers had arrested Mohamed-Bobat at her home on Saturday 10 September (“Million rand scam exposed”, 20 September). Mohamed-Bobat must sign in at the Westville police station three times a day, between 06:00 and 18:00. Her passport has been confiscated, as she is considered to be a flight risk. Police are still investigating the case. Mohamed-Bobat will appear in court again next April. Anyone who may have information is urged to call the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Denver van Sitter, on (021) 4678117.

Spread the sharing and caring CAPE TOWN’S Biggest Christmas Fair, in association with Gift of the Giver’s Charity, takes place at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town from now until Friday 23 December. The event which aims to spread the spirit of sharing and caring, is the uniting of more than 200 talents, crafts, products and tastes of Cape Town – all under one roof. A one-stop shopper’s paradise, the fair offers quality products at affordable prices and a host of prizes is up for grabs. In the true spirit of sharing and caring, the “Make a Difference” campaign will offer pocket relief to eight customers and make a difference to the end of their 2011 or boost the start of their 2012. FESTIVE CHEER: With Christmas a few days away, the Independent Congregational Church in Athlone in partnership with the lo cal police brought food parcels to the home less and party packs for the local children. The congregation travelled in convoy led by SAPS members, starting at the church premises and going to Bokmakierie, Vy giekraal, Kewtown flats, Bridgetown before ending in the Athlone CBD, where they fed the homeless people. “The idea is to celebrate the birth of Christ and let those who do not have the privilege, know they are not forgot ten,” Athlone spokesperson Constable Zita Norman said. Teachers taught technology TWO hundred teachers from around Cape Town will now be able to better incorporate computers in their lessons, after graduating from a year-long Information and Communication Technology course.

Skouspel out now END your year in style with the full broadcast of this year’s Skouspel music spectacular on 31 December at 20:30 on KykNET. The show will be followed by Jukebox with a countdown to the new year. It was a year of firsts for the 2011 Skouspel production. Forty-five artists, including international star Patrizio Buanne, took part, top fashion designers created the outfits and the multimillion rand stage was complemented by huge screens displaying high-quality graphics to accompany the show; a spectacular event not to be missed. This year’s Skouspel was bigger and better than ever. Top fashion designers worked on the costumes, and for the first time dancers were part of the choreography of the concert.

Coenie de Villiers was honoured as music legend of the year and 45 artists, including international star Patrizio Buanne and new additions Charlize Berg and Die Heuwels Fantasties, performed De Villiers’ popular song Karoonag. Now you can get this and more on a CD and DVD to enjoy in the comfort of your home. With more than 40 songs and the most artists ever on the Skouspel stage, this is a collector’s item. When you order the CD and DVD through Huisgenoot, the price is R99,99 for the CD and R139,99 for the DVD. Postage is R45. To order, call 086 166 3368 or (021) 918-8811, or e-mail direct.sales@onthedot.co.za. The DVD and CD will also be available at music stores, and prices may differ between stores.

The group was awarded certificates in an unusual graduation ceremony at Moyo Restaurant, outside Stellenbosch, on Monday 5 December. The graduates are from 10 different schools and were trained by Radical Learning, a training and skills development enterprise and software developer, as part of a Western Cape Education Department initiative. According to Kathy McCabe, CEO of Radical Learning, using technology during lessons has become gradually more important for teachers. “Our children are growing up in a technology-rich environment. It is crucial that our teachers are able to harness this technology to engage learners,” she said. “With the internet in every school, resources can always be kept up-to-date. Need to see a map of the world showing the latest country borders? Or a satellite photo of the new moon signalling the end of Ramadan? Or to hear a talk-

ing story in isiXhosa or isiZulu? This can all be done at the click of a mouse, bringing endless resources to schools. Training our teachers to use this technology effectively is an important stepping stone towards raising achievement in all subjects.” Radical Learning has been working as a training partner with the Western Cape Education Department for the past six years and 2 500 teachers have graduated and been awarded certificates since the programme’s inception. Ursula Vivier, a teacher at St Mary’s Primary School in central Cape Town and one of this year’s graduates, says that the course opened her mind to the possibilities of using computers in the classroom. “I have really benefited tremendously from this course. I still have much to learn but now have a better knowledge and understanding of the many uses a computer offers,” said Vivier. The course focuses heavily on teaching teachers how to use multimedia and the internet in their lessons. Some 400 engineering students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) also underwent training with Radical during 2011.

All or nothing THERE was agony and ecstasy in the final week of battle as the ladies bravely fought to come out tops at the Junior Women’s World Championship at Turfhall Stadium. Rashied Isaacs caught all the action.

OVER AND OUT: New Zealand’s Santana Harris steamrolls South Africa’s Alex Fortune on third base during their pool match on Tuesday night. New Zealand won the game 102, and put SA out of the playoffs.

GOTCHA: Chinese Taipei’s Tsao Ya Wen is chased back and tagged to third base by China’s catcher, Yu Xiaotong, during a playoff match. Chinese Taipei won 50. CLOSE: Yuka Nakamura of Japan hides her tears after the final play. The US beat them 41.

WHEELY KIND: Market Toyota in Athlone ensured that People’s Post’s freelance photographer Rashied Isaacs was able to bring readers the ac tion by sponsor ing a car to be used for the du ration of the Jun ior Women’s World Champi onship. Pictured are Achmat Jacobs (branch manager of Mar ket Toyota Ath lone), Rashied Isaacs and Zaah ier Parker (sales executive for newcar sales).

TOO LATE: Brazil’s catcher Camila Hosokawa is late to tag New Zealand's Ellie Cooper as she dives home during the playoffs. New Zealand won 80. DISBELIEF: Katherine Tye, Stacey Webber, Megan Horne and Tayla Sup ple are in tears after their 32 defeat to Chinese Taipei, which saw them knocked out of the champion ship on Fri day night.

Successful tournament draws to an end LYNN PRINS

T

URFHALL Stadium erupted with cheers on Saturday when locals flocked to witness an exciting Softball Junior Women’s World Championship (JWWC) final between their favourites, Japan and the US. The US, who were crowned champions of the 2007 Softball Junior Women’s World Championship, had a tough match against Japan, but eventually won when, in the fifth inning, Cheyanne Tarango hit a grandslam home run over the fence. People’s Post is the media partner of the JWWC. Japan kept composure and fought back but only managed to score one run, which led to the US being crowned champions again for the fourth time. It was not easy for the US in the play-offs, since they faced Japan on Friday and lost the game, sending Japan straight to the final. Japan was then the only undefeated team and the only team to have beaten the US. The champions had to then face Chinese Taipei on Saturday to stand a chance to be in the final, where they successfully beat Chi-

sies to tears when they were defeated 3-2, and in the end hopeful Chinese Taipei came third in the tournament, winning bronze for the

second time. The rest of the teams who all made play-offs were Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and China. Apart from experiencing joy and disappointment, players also found it difficult saying goodbye as the tournament ended. Many friendships were formed, and Cape Town proved just how well they can host an international event. The closing ceremony was done in style, and the guests were yet again entertained – just as in the opening ceremony. Limited Edition, a group of drummers, showed off their talents to the crowd, receiving a standing ovation. Beng Choo Low, International Softball Federation Secretary General, thanked South Africans and the people of Cape Town for their outstanding support, and praised Noore Nacerodien, head of local organising committee, along with his team for the efforts in making the ISF ninth JWWC Under 19 tournament a success. The tournament was also described as one of the best by many coaches, and Nacerodien said that Softball South Africa will be bidding for the 2016 Senior World Championship. He wished the teams well and a safe journey home.
