Runners go the extra miles for Katharine House Hospice 6 local supporters will run 26.2 miles in the Virgin Money London Marathon this April for Katharine House Hospice. The hospice would like to say a huge thank you to them for all of their hard work, in both training and fundraising for this iconic marathon. The Gold Bond runners including Charlotte Beddow, Joe Potts, Joel Haywood, Carl Williams and hospice Fundraiser Lisa Carson, all have fundraising targets of £1,350 which they are all working hard towards. Charlotte has baked cakes and sold them in Asda Living, Carl is holding a BBQ event at his rugby club, Joel has held a fundraising event at his tattoo parlour and Joe and Lisa have secured a substantial sponsorship deals with a local business. All of this activity, in addition to their sponsorship raised through online and offline sponsorship should raise in excess of £7,000 for the hospice. This will fund the entire hospice services for a whole 24 hours. Chloe Birchall is also running the marathon in support of the hospice this year having gained a “Good for age” place following a really successful marathon in 2015. Chloe is also working hard to raise valuable funds for the hospice.
4
If you would like to support any of our runners, please visit www.justgiving.com and search for any of their names. Every penny you donate will make a difference to the hospice, and pay for free care for local people with life limiting illnesses. Every year the hospice has 5 Gold Bond places for the London Marathon. The 2017 Gold Bond places will be drawn in August this year. Those interested in applying need to contact the Fundraising Team on 01785 270808 or email fundraising@khhospice.org.uk. Anyone wanting to run for the hospice in any events can get sponsor forms and t-shirts by contacting the Fundraising Team on 01785 270808 or email fundraising@khhospice.org.uk. Since its beginnings as a volunteer led Hospice at Home service back in 1989 – Katharine House has grown to provide a range of vital free care services for local people. Since 1989 the Hospice has provided care for almost 9000 patients across Mid-Staffordshire coping with a progressive illness and their families. It relies upon the generosity of the local community to help generate 75% of funds needed to run its range of vital services.

Safeguarding Your Child’s Sight From The Sun As spring gets ever closer, many of us are starting to prepare for a highly anticipated Easter getaway to enjoy some sunshine.
early age, to safeguard their sight from complications later in life, such as cataracts and age related macular degeneration.
It’s no secret that you need to protect your little one’s skin from the harmful effects of sunlight. However, worryingly, there is far less of a focus on the importance of correct eyewear for children. In fact a survey carried out by Nivea amongst 1500 parents found that around 20% do not pack sunglasses for their children.
At Carolyn Parker Optometrists, we stock an extensive range of children’s eyewear offering 100% UV protection. We offer a fitting service, to ensure that your child’s sunglasses are fully fitted to their face, preventing light from reflecting up underneath or from the side of their glasses.
Your child’s eyes need extra protection from sunlight, as the components of their eyes, such as the cornea and lens, are clearer than adult eyes, allowing for more light to penetrate through.
Head in to the practice today and see how we can help to safeguard your child’s sight or call us on 01785 713861.
Because children spend significantly more time outdoors than most adults, some experts say that up to half of a person’s lifetime exposure to UV radiation can occur by the age of 18. It’s therefore vital you provide them with optimum protection at an

Meet the New Manager of The Oakley Arms The Oakley Arms has sadly stood empty and unloved for the last 9 years. Once a popular wedding reception venue, it holds dear in many hearts as a place of fond memories, and before that a stately home since at least the 1860’s. For Brunning and Price it was the perfect building to breathe new life into by creating a stunning new pub restaurant, due to open shortly in May. John Duncan has recently been appointed as its General Manager and is keen to open the doors in order to get to know everyone. However, John isn’t a stranger to the area. He along with his wife Sarah and two daughters Isobel 3 and Darcey 6 currently live in Blymhill along with their five hens and a Boxer Dog called Hugo ‘’Hugo was my attempt to bring another man into the house, having been brought up in Chapel Park in the North east with two brothers, I felt a bit under represented surrounded by all these women in my life’’ ‘’Sarah was brought up here, living for a little while in Brewood before moving to Bishops Wood, where our children now go to school’’ John trained as a chef in Newcastle before moving in 2001 to work for Lord Bradford overseeing the Countess’s Arms very near to the Oakley’s sister B&P pub, the Fox in Newport. After 7 years he moved to the Swan in Forton as general manager before moving to the Huntsman in Little Wenlock as Director. Having a quality pub like the Fox on his doorstep has kept John on his toes all these years. ‘’It was probably the best thing to have happened to me, the reputation of the Fox and the Woodbridge a little further out in Coalport made me pull my socks up as I love a bit of competition.’’ But happily for us, there came a time when John decided that he needed a change and if you can’t beat the competition you should join them, so we are thrilled to say that he decided to move to the Oakley Arms and brings along with him a wealth of knowledge not only about the hospitality industry but also the area. John is joined at the Oakley by Charlie Ward, who has been the Deputy Manager at the Fox for the last 9 years and Lee Walley, the current Head Chef at Hayhurst Arms in Bostock Green. Now that the management team is in place they are busily looking for enthusiastic, personable people to make up the rest of the 40 strong team. ‘’We are looking for lots of local ‘crew members’ to work in the bar, or waiting, kitchen and maintenance roles. You don’t need to have experience, just genuinely love working with people and being generally ‘hospitable’, we will happily teach the rest if needed. To apply, for any role, please send
10
your CV with a covering letter telling us about you and what makes you tick to jan@brunningandprice.co.uk, check out our website www.oakley-brewood.co.uk or find us on Facebook’’ ‘’I’m really looking forward to creating our menu, finding some great new local suppliers and forming relationships. I love the idea of running beer festivals and evenings where customers can meet local brewers to find out more about their beers and taste what’s on offer locally. We are fortunate to have a wealth of brewers in the area to choose from and I would love to hear from our customers about what they would like us to stock. The pub has a great bar at its heart and I hope that it will be a hub of local life.’’ Although the Oakley will no longer be a venue to hold wedding receptions there is a private dining room seating around 10 people for smaller affairs and over 160 places for diners in a mixture of rooms that incorporate lots of nooks and crannies to hide in or views across the newly formed terrace and gardens, that can also seat over 100, for those sunny evenings suitable for ‘al fresco’ dining. Dogs will be welcomed in the bar area and we are busy mapping suitable circular walks from and to the pub so that customers can start their ramble with a little drink and then work up an appetite to dine on their return. ‘’I can’t wait to get started. I’m not used to not being behind the bar or in the kitchen and I don’t really know what to do with myself while the builders are finishing off. Before children I had a wealth of hobbies; watching football, playing golf and fly fishing but over the last 6 years those have dwindled as I love spending any spare time with my girls. That being said, it is quite tempting to abandon the idea of popping Koi Carp into the newly cleaned out pond and replacing them with some trout so that I can keep my hand in at the fly fishing’’ Our plan is to open in early May. We will update the website and Facebook with any notable dates and plans as they are finalised so we encourage anyone who is interested to follow our progress there.

Building work progresses at South Staffordshire College’s groundbreaking new AgriSTEM Academy Structural work at South Staffordshire College’s new AgriSTEM Academy is picking up pace with contractor G F Tomlinson having now commenced work on the restoration of the historic Granary building. The building, which will form the breathtaking new focal point of the £5.3m Academy, will be renovated to provide over 1000m of state-of-the-art learning space that along with the addition of over 1000m of additional new workshop space, will transform the scale and quality of industry relevant training in the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) and Agricultural Engineering & Technology (AgriTech) sectors. To celebrate this key milestone in the project, staff from South Staffordshire College met with the team from G F Tomlinson and Chair of the Stoke and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, David Frost CBE on Monday 22nd February to enjoy a tour of the site and an opportunity to formally mark what is sure to be one of many landmark moments in the build. Following his tour, David Frost CBE spoke on behalf of the Stoke and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, who are funding over two thirds of the project via their Growth Deal Fund, saying “It is great to see this development taking shape. The agricultural technology sector will be a key part of growing the economy of Staffordshire and we are very pleased to be investing in AgriSTEM to develop the skills our young people will need for the future.” Having hosted the visitors to the site on Monday, Director and
14
South Staffordshire College Chief Executive Principal Graham Morley and David Frost CBE of the Stoke and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership prepare to break new ground at the AgriSTEM Academy.
General Manager of G F Tomlinson, Andy Hughes said “The AgriSTEM Academy, once complete, will allow South Staffordshire College to offer cutting-edge learning facilities for agriculture students. “We were delighted to outline the details of this major building refurbishment to key representatives, including David Frost from Stoke and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership. “Our team is now on site creating new teaching spaces that will enhance and develop learning facilities at the college so students can study a range of subjects in a realistic manufacturing setting.” Scheduled for completion this Autumn, the Academy will provide additional learning opportunities for up to 1000 additional learners and will see the introduction of new courses in subjects including Agricultural Engineering, Landbased Technology and many more. New state-of-the-art facilities will include an advanced mechatronics lab, agricultural and construction vehicle simulators and renewable energies workshops, multi-occupation
construction areas and a host of digitally enabled learning, independent study and collaboration spaces. Of course, being such a historic site, South Staffordshire College are also keen to preserve some of the original features of the Granary building and Architects Maber are working hard to create designs that seamlessly blend the old and the new. As well as sympathetic refurbishment work, staff at the College are also busy restoring hidden gems such as a granary cart that promises to have a new lease of life when the AgriSTEM Academy is completed. To follow the progress of the new AgriSTEM Academy visit: www.southstaffs.ac.uk/about-us/ agristem/ or for more information call 0300 456 2424. World Book Day at St Michael’s First School
To celebrate World Book Day at St Michael’s First School this year, children and staff dressed up as a character from a favourite story. We decided to choose two authors for our costume ideas.
Nursery and Reception chose to dress as a character from a Julia Donaldson story, while Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 dressed as a character from a Roald Dahl story. We had an amazing collection of story characters from Charlie Bucket to the BFG, from The Gruffalo to the Snail and the Whale.
During the day children had lots of fun. They all completed a reading recommendation to share with the whole school and took part in the Big Read. This is when everyone in school stops what they are doing and enjoys reading a book for 15 minutes.

TFM now open in Penkridge
Everything for the farm & countryside Your local TFM store is now open in Penkridge. With a head office and flagship store in Stableford, Shropshire and stores at Newport and Bridgnorth, TFM is one of the original and largest farm & country stores in the UK and has built a reputation for excellent customer service and depth of expertise across a huge product range, which caters for everyone that lives or works in the countryside. The company also has a simple, honest policy of providing products at straightforward low prices for all customers, all year round. The new store that opened in November last year in the centre of Penkridge is the culmination of much internal restructuring, allowing stores to be supplied from a new central distribution hub in Telford. So, despite its compact size, the store can supply a huge range and depth of stock, as well as delivering direct to farms, sites, homes and estates. The Penkridge team of local staff are already building an excellent following of customers from all walks of life. New Community Garden set to open to Penkridge residents
Opens 6th April at Penkridge Middle School A brand new, free for all community garden is set to open to Penkridge residents on the 6th April at 1:30 pm, following 6 months of planning and preparation by volunteer coordinator, Sarah Giles.
whether to chip in with odd jobs, or have their own space to transform into a mini garden paradise.
The Community Garden, which is based in the entrance to Penkridge Middle School on Marsh Lane, is a joint initiative between Sarah, (A Penkridge resident and Rodbaston College Horticulture student) and Penkridge Middle School. Following many years of the site going unused due to staffing and budget limitations, the garden is finally inviting the public of all ages to make use of the garden and help create a new gardening oasis for the whole village. Volunteer Coordinator Sarah, said: “It’s been a challenge to get the garden ready as we haven’t received outside funding for the project, it has been created on an entirely voluntary basis. The kindness and generosity of local businesses and residents has been a vital part of getting to the point where we are finally preparing to open to the public. We want everyone in the community to come and enjoy the garden. There’s no cost to be involved, and our aim is to make gardening, growing your own food and enjoying the outdoors accessible to everyone. Everyone can grow their own food and plants regardless of previous experience, age, health issues or confidence. Gardening is one of the most relaxing and therapeutic activities you can do, it can dramatically improve people’s mental and physical wellbeing. We can’t wait to see how the garden and it’s users change and grow over the coming years. We’re very excited to finally be opening!” The garden, which features a mini orchard, composting facilities and ample parking, has a mix of large communal and reservable raised beds. Gardeners or local organisations can choose April 2016

“We’re busy planting the first round of crops such as potatoes, beans, peas, strawberries and blueberries, which will give us a wonderful range of foods in the summer. But we’re not stopping there. This is just the beginning and we encourage everyone to come, get your hands dirty and enjoy the fruits of our labour. We have more plans to improve the garden over the coming months, so it’ll be very exciting to see how it will transform and become something amazing for the village!” · Sarah Giles The opening afternoon will be taking place in the garden on the 6th April between 1:30 and 4:30. The garden is free to use and everyone is welcome. There will be fun activities and the chance to get stuck in planting and getting their hands dirty. The Beauty of Barbados by Helen Taylor From its white sandy beaches and clear blue waters to its rich and vibrant culture, Barbados is a holiday destination with a difference. Here we give you the low-down on the must-visit tropical island that has a surprisingly British feel… The Climate Thanks to its tropical climate, Barbados is known for practically perfect weather for holidaymakers. It’s average daily high temperature is 26°C/78°F, there’s an average daily rainfall of less than ¼ inch and the island boasts 3000 hours of sunshine a year. The Culture With it’s British, African and West Indian roots, Barbados has formed a distinctive identity that incorporates many different influences. Barbados was a colony of the British Empire for over 300 years. However, the majority of its population are of African origin and as such many colourful traditions have carried over into modern island life. The tuk band - a collection of brightly attired musicians playing a bass drum, kettle drum and pennywhistle accompanied by a variety of costumed characters and stiltmen can be seen performing at all of the islands major festivals, like Holetown Festival, Crop Over and the Oistins Fish Festival. Barbados Landship is a unique part of the culture of the island. It sees a ‘theatrical group’ perform intricate dances that reflect the passage of ships through rough seas and the activities that take place on board. Performers wear costumes similar to those worn in the British Navy but dances are performed to an African rhythm and the Landship is often accompanied by a tuk bank. Yet another indicator of the island’s rich history and merged cultures. There’s a strong cricketing tradition in Barbados, that dates back to the 1800s when the game was played by British soldiers who were stationed on the island. Road Tennis was invented on the island in 1930 and playing dominoes is a highly popular pastime.

The Beaches Barbados has many beautiful beaches. On the west coast you can enjoy white sandy shores and clear blue waters - perfect for those who want to relax and enjoy the idyllic setting. There’s always the option to go jet-skiing, kayaking, snorkelling or swimming, as well as maybe enjoying a catamaran cruise. Watersport enthusiasts will love the island’s south coast where they’ll find flawless beaches, lively surf and the ideal setting for windsurfing, kitesurfing and boogie boarding. Surfers from all over the world head to the east coast of the island to make the most of the wide and wind-blown beaches that are pounded by the Atlantic. And in the north, coral and sandstone cliffs rise straight out of the sea, reaching up to a hundred feet in height. Things to Do Animal lovers will certainly want to take a turtle tour, where you can sail down the beautiful coastline on a catamaran, enjoy lunch and drinks, and of course get a chance to see and swim with the turtles. Horse racing is an important part of Barbados heritage and dates back to 1845 on the island. The Garrison Savannah Racetrack is located just outside of Bridgetown and is becoming increasingly popular with tourists who are looking for an exciting day out. It’s said that Barbados is the birthplace of rum and the island was the world’s largest producer of the drink in the 1600s and 1700s. Rum still plays a massive part in island life and visitors must make a stop at one of the numerous rum shops that fill the island. The Food It’s easy to get a taste of traditional Barbados cuisine on the island, look out for Cou-cou and flying fish - the national dish of Barbados - as well as pudding and souse. Cou-cou is similar to polenta but more creamy and is made from corn meal and okras, its usually served with flying fish in a tomato-based sauce. Pudding and souse consists of pickled pork served with pickled sweet potato or breadfruit.

FSC Investment Services Ltd Over the next few months we have Local Elections, Police Crime Commissioner Elections and of course the IN / OUT European Referendum. Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton may be the next American President and the Oil price may rise to $50 per barrel or more. Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn may even be the next Prime Minister, who knows! We can’t predict the future but there is likely to be some market uncertainty, whatever happens both here in the UK and in the wider world. Uncertainty may affect the markets in the short term and potentially in the longer term. The question then follows ‘ what should I do with my savings and investments? ‘ You could put your money in the Bank or Building Society, seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser or put it in a suitcase under the bed. Whatever you choose there are risks involved and advantages and disadvantages. We would never advocate putting your money in a suitcase under the bed as inflation, theft or fire could seriously reduce your wealth. The Banks and Building Societies have traditionally looked after us and our investments but many customers have lost faith and trust in them in recent years. The alternative is to seek out a Financial Adviser, which for may will be a scary prospect. All Financial Advisers are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and are charged with providing you as the client suitable Financial Advice. Financial Advisers don’t gamble with your money or guess what the markets are going to do, they use their knowledge, experience and skills to research the market and recommend the most suitable areas for investment that they can.
If you are going to invest in these uncertain times it is important to choose wisely and make informed decisions about your investments and your future. A Financial Adviser will complete a full factfind, assess your attitude to risk and choose the most suitable investment products and funds for you given all of your circumstances. There are investment products with a variety of different levels of risk, from low, low to medium, medium, medium to high and high risk. The returns on each will differ and your Financial Adviser can advise you on what’s best for you, your family and your future. Interview with a Foster Carer John & Andrea’s Story John and his wife Andrea were your average family who, after raising their own children ago decided to do something really remarkable, they decided to become foster carers and help children in care. They are now in their third year of fostering and making a real difference to children’s lives. The couple spent many years thinking about becoming foster carers before they approached Park Foster Care and it was simply that it was the right time as they had the spare bedrooms. The couple recently fostered a group of young siblings, three brothers and sisters between the ages of 2 and 5. John said: “We had the siblings for about a year and we absolutely loved it, of course it was really hard work but seeing the results and the improvement in them was so rewarding. Fostering is a brilliant thing to do and providing a child with a safe family home in order to make their lives better is the best reward a person can get.” Why Park Foster Care? John explained: “Nobody offers the support that Park does, their approach, the training

Fostering is so much better than I could ever have imagined, if you are thinking of it, you should definitely give Park Foster Care a call.” (Image and names of foster carers have been changed for confidentiality).

Great Beer and Great Food at Slater’s Slater’s has got it all; great beer, great food and a fabulous setting. So, it’s no surprise that Wolverhampton’s newest bar has quickly become a firm favourite with locals and visitors to the city alike. Located in the heart of the city centre, in Queen’s Square, the craft beer bar occupies a prime position in Costa Coffee’s former premises and has been designed to offer customers the perfect setting to sit back, relax and enjoy everything that’s on offer. Serving an impressive selection of craft beers from the country’s most sort after names, beer enthusiasts will be in their element when they step through the doors and check out the list of top brands behind the bar, as well as Slater’s very own hand-crafted ales of course. Owner, Fay Slater explains: “We’ve been brewing ales from our brewery in Stafford for over 20 years and have five of our own cask beers at the bar, as well as a selection of five guest brands from all over the UK - that we rotate frequently.” A family-run business, Slater’s Ales started life as Ecceshall Brewery in 1995. From their original location behind the George Hotel in Ecceshall, husband and wife team, Ged and Moyra Slater began the hugely successful business. Keeping up with customer demand meant that the team needed a bigger premises, so in 2004 they relocated to their current site at St Albans Road, Stafford. Now with a state-of-the art brewery, the company continues to thrive and produces some of the finest beers in the UK today. Alongside Slater’s Ales at the bar, there’s also keg beers from high-end brewers like Brewdog, Magic Rock, Thornbridge and Bathams as well as cider from Hurst View, a range of craft lagers, spirits and fizz on tap. “We’ve also got a fully-stocked bottle bar upstairs with favourites from brands like Beavertown and Thornbridge” With a modern and stylishly designed interior, the bar is the perfect setting for any get-together; whether that’s a night out, meeting friends for lunch, enjoying after work drinks or even a private function in the upstairs bar area.

We’ve tried to create a contemporary look, that’s really comfortable and relaxed too.” Food is served all day and the menu has been carefully created by Slater’s chef to provide clients with a delicious selection of homemade, freshly cooked dishes - that are made with locally sourced ingredients - and which accompany the bar’s exclusive beers perfectly. “Our menu is based on American style street food and we’ve used our own beers in the cooking process for many of our main courses - like our BBQ Ribs which are braised in our Smoked Porter Ale.” And the team have also recommended which of their beers pair best with each item on the menu. Food is served from 11am till 8pm and there’s a choice of light bites and sandwiches, as well as coffee and cakes in addition to the main menu. “We also do a fabulous Sunday lunch, as well as special lunches for occasions like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day,” adds Fay. So, whether you’re looking to get a taste of the best in craft beers or simply enjoy some delicious food, head straight to Slater’s.

A New Look For Your Home by Helen Taylor
It’s the perfect time of year to transform your home into the stylish living space you’ve always wanted. The weather’s great outside, so there’s no reason to put off redecorating, restyling and redesigning the rooms in your home for a totally inspired new look. Whether you are planning on making small improvements or a radical change, any alterations are sure to lift tired spaces and provide a new
lease of life for dated décor. Decide on the overall style you want to achieve. If your house is a period property and all rooms boast character features, then work with history by emphasising those unique points, but add your own modern twist by choosing up-to-date accessories and colour schemes. Past and present combined will create a truly chic look.
Bold, bright shades and statement wallpapers work well as accents in larger rooms, but if you’re lacking space, a softer scheme will be far more appropriate.
For the modern home, try out striking style ideas that are thoroughly contemporary. Use statement furnishings and accessories to add interest to plain rooms and maximise space with sleek lines and light colours. When considering a drastic change in colour scheme, be sure to plan for how your current furnishings will look. If you haven’t got the budget to purchase all new items, think about choosing a colour that will compliment what you’ve already got.
42
Take notice of current trends, but be sure that the items you chose will have enough longevity to last until you want to re-design your room again.
Replace neutral shades of cream, brown and white with light greys and soft pastel hues for a brand new take on minimalist style.

Students Showing Their Support at Wolgarston High School On the 16th July 2016, I will be doing a sponsored skydive in order to raise money to support Shine charity who work with patients with Spina Bifida - the condition my Mum, Claire had - and Hydrocephalus to help improve their lives through support, education and friendship. During the last week of half term, we in Sixth Form hosted a ‘Colour for Claire’ non-uniform day and a whole-school bake sale, while I also collected donations. I am now proud to announce that we raised a final total of £1115.62, absolutely smashing my initial target of £1000! And thanks to an incredibly generous donation which covered the entire cost of my skydive, all of this money can go straight to Shine!! I must say, I have been completely overwhelmed by the response to my story and it really warms my heart to see all the lovely things people have said about Mum and just how generous everyone can be for a good cause. It really goes to show just how amazing Mum was and how many lives she touched. But even more so, it shows how kind my friends, peers, teachers and the whole of the local community are and how generous and supportive everyone is, as you all seem to be all too willing to get behind a crazy 17 year old who wants to throw himself out of a plane from 15,000 feet. This skydive is all about doing something to make Mum proud, and I think everyone who commented or liked or shared any of my posts, everyone bought a cake or two, who wore colours to celebrate Mum’s life on Wednesday, and anyone who made any donation, big or small, have managed that already.
purely from a couple of days in school. So I would like to thank everyone who has already got involved and helped me, because every single one of you played a massive part in the success of this fundraiser and in helping a fantastic charity keep on helping people. I would also like to remind anyone who wishes to help that donations can still be made to my JustGiving page at: www.justgiving.com/ConnorDavies3 Once again, I cannot express how thankful I am to every single one of you who has helped get this far. It genuinely means the absolute world to me. Connor Davies
I never expected the sort of response I received from my video, which now has over 1,300 views on Shines official Facebook page (and can still be viewed at this link: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=tbkIWI7cLb8) and never in my wildest dreams did I think we would raise over £1,000 April 2016

FREE microchipping to keep dog owners on right side of law Time is running out for dog owners in Stafford Borough to get their pets microchipped before a new law comes into force next month. But Stafford Borough Council is offering vouchers to 200 people, which will entitle them to have their dogs chipped for free. In just over three weeks all dogs must be microchipped by law. Owners whose pets aren’t chipped face being served a notice by the Council requiring them to do so. And they could end up with a £500 court fine if they fail to act. It is hoped the new law coming in on 6 April will mean stray dogs are reunited with their owners more quickly saving the council a chunk of the annual £15,000 kennel cost bill. The existing law requires all dogs to have a collar and tag identifying their owner in case they become a stray, but last year almost 200 strays were reported in the borough and only a quarter of these had a collar and tag. The microchipping vouchers can be redeemed at The

Island Veterinary Associates at both their Stafford and Stone clinics. People just need to complete the details on the back of the voucher, make an appointment and take some form of identification to prove they live in Stafford Borough. Councillor Frank Finlay, Cabinet Member for Environment and Health, said: “I would encourage dog owners throughout the borough whose pets aren’t chipped to take advantage of this initiative as well as ensuring all dogs wear a collar and tag. “This not only makes the reuniting process much easier and less stressful for both owner and animal but it will soon be required by law.” The Council offered special vouchers entitling owners to have their dogs chipped for free last year. The vouchers are available to the first 200 people who come forward. Crime in Staffordshire 1840 - 1879
Great Value! Great Service! www.cowchmy.co.
By Beryl Holt
“In the year 1845 a report was made that upwards of £80 in gold and silver had been stolen from the Red Lion Inn, Stafford and the Landlord had only recently taken to the business, and had he not been a respectable man, it may have been thought a robbery of that kind, under the circumstances was rather improbable. The cash was said to have been in two large canvas bags, that these were in the drawer of a chest in the landlord’s bedroom and that this was always kept locked. On closely inspecting the drawer and lock I found no force had been used and that if the drawer had not been carelessly left unlocked, the lock must have been picked.”

This is the start of just one of the fascinating stories featured in “Police Experiences” by Thomas Woollaston and published by Berkswich History Society. For almost forty years Thomas served as a policeman in various ranks in the County of Stafford and his book, first published in 1884, recounts tales, amongst other things, of murder, robbery, crimes against a child, forged bank notes and a missing round of beef! This hard backed book of 230 pages, which is a brilliant read, would make an excellent inexpensive present. It is now available at £5 (+ £2.80 package & postage) from:- Beryl Holt, 53 Old Croft Road, Walton on the Hill, 01785 665834. Bob Morton, Eastfield, Kitlings Lane, Walton on the Hill, 01785 664613. Why choose Tettenhall College? A unique atmosphere with remarkable opportunities where every pupil achieves their personal best. Founded in 1863, Tettenhall College is an independent school for boys and girls aged 2 to 18 years. Located on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Tettenhall, the school sits in a beautiful setting of over 30 acres of historic woodlands. With outstanding on-site facilities in a safe and secure environment, pupils are known, taught and nurtured as individuals within a genuine family atmosphere. Pupils thrive in the School’s inspiring and supportive environment. We are proud of the commitment of our staff, and the partnership between the School and parents fosters a unique atmosphere in which our pupils flourish. Children are encouraged and supported in being the very best they can, having a positive mind-set and developing a true sense of self-worth. Manners and courtesy are important; good humour and care for one another central. Through the remarkable opportunities that we offer with extensive extra-curricular activities, pupils are able to discover their own individual talents and interests and pursue them to the best of their abilities.
Academically, our small class sizes and focus on the individual’s learning style ensures that our pupils always achieve their personal best. We have a strong reputation for the quality of our teaching throughout our School, from the initial love of learning that is developed in our younger pupils to the A level courses that our Sixth Formers shine in. We make full use of our stunning location with an on-site Forest School, full sized rugby, football and cricket pitches plus a swimming pool and theatre. Lessons are geared to stimulate and stretch pupils at all levels, and teachers effectively gauge

individual ability and personal strengths to encourage the fulfilment of every pupil’s potential. All of the key attributes of a highly successful school are to be found in our latest inspection reports. These make reference to outstanding pastoral care, excellent arrangements for welfare, good progress in learning and academic achievement and exemplary pupil behaviour. At the end of their school journey our leavers are equipped with excellent academic qualifications, essential life skills and a lasting set of values.
