Great night at the races for St. Joe’s

St. Joseph’s Health Centre was the real winner at Woodbine Racetrack last Wednesday. Its second annual St. Joe’s Plate raised more than $62,000 in support of the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. The event’s proceeds will enable the renovation of a lounge and dining area within the unit, creating a ‘home away from home’ feel for clients who require overnight care while being treated for mental illness. Guests at the fundraiser dined on a buffet dinner in a private tent overlooking the racetrack. Races took place every 25 minutes throughout the night. Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame inductee and jockey Sandy Hawley made an appearance, sharing a few words of advice for those betting on the horses. The “out-of-the box” fundraising event brought together as many as 240 people in support of treatment for mental illness at the west-end health-care facility. Many were family and friends of Lauren Whelan, for whom the event was dedicated. Whelan, a 19-year-old student at Wilfred Laurier University, struggled with depression before taking her own life in January of this year. Whelan, >>>FUNDRAISER, page 14

The two-day Liberty Village Art Crawl will return for its second year and feature some 45 artists from across Ontario and Montreal. Liberty Village resident Darryl Dash will bring his photo blog of the neighbourhood to the event in prints, a couple of canvases and a Kickstarter campaign to create a photo book. “Part of it is that I love the community. Dash said he often looks for the intersection between the old Liberty Village and the new developments that have taken over the area in his images. One of his favourite photos is of the old prison chapel in Liberty Village Park. The Ward 20 (Trinity-Spadina) seat vacated by Adam Vaughan will be filled by council appointment, with a special Toronto Council meeting July 7. Vaughan resigned his seat to run in the Trinity-Spadina federal byelection, which was vacated earlier this year by New Democrat Olivia Chow, who is running for mayor. Rather than wait to see how he fared as a Liberal candidate in that byelection, Vaughan resigned as soon as the writ was dropped. Council has few choices available to it in selecting his successor. The seat must be declared vacant within 60 days of Vaughan’s resignation, and because the vacancy occurs after March 31 of the election year, Council cannot hold a byelection.

Instead, councillors must have an appointment process. Under the rules proposed by the city clerk, interested applicants have until June 20 at 4:30 p.m. to submit their applications. Applicants will be able to address the July 7 council meeting for five minutes each, with the order chosen by lot. The new councillor will be serving for only a short time. There will only be two more council meetings before council recesses for the municipal election — the first, starting the day after the proposed special meeting, and the second at the end of August. The appointment will be in effect until the newly-elected councillor is sworn in following the Oct. 27 municipal election.

Lloyd, who began the Toronto Art Crawl now featured in three neighbourhoods across the city, was initially surprised to hear there wasn’t an existing outdoor show in the Liberty Village. “There’s a very artistic, creative, entrepreneurial community here,” Lloyd said. “And I consider entrepreneurs and artists synonymous.” The show will also feature a variety of jewelry, fashion design, accessories and sculpture. With various food vendors and live DJs accompanying at the event, Lloyd said she hopes residents will come for a greater experience. “It’s really like a community party destination. I want people to be blown away by the talent that’s around us and hopefully be inspired,” Lloyd said. The Liberty Village Art Crawl runs June 13 and 14 in Liberty Village Park, north by King Street West, to the west by Dufferin Street, to the south by the Gardiner Expressway, to the east by Strachan Avenue and to the northeast by the CP railway tracks, and Liberty Street between Jefferson and Fraser avenues. Trinity Bellwoods’ balloon forest grows love for city

NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com It looked a lot like Disney’s Up from afar. Some 300 balloons were installed in Trinity Bellwoods Park on Saturday as part of Toronto’s 100 in 1 Day community event. The intervention ‘Balloon Forest’ featured different coloured balloons, all labeled with aspects of Toronto, that passersby were encouraged to take away. “We wanted something to be aesthetically pleasing, but also to garner some sort of reaction,” said Nicole BruunMeyer, one of the artists who also lives nearby the park. The balloons were separated into five categories: waterfront, green space, arts and culture, diversity and public transportation. Bruun-Meyer, who joined with some former architecture classmates for the project, hoped the project would demonstrate the great – and not so great – aspects of the city. “We were trying not to make it too obvious,” BruunMeyer said of which category would lose. “We want to get people to think about what

they actually like about the city, but it’s also about bringing play and fun back into the city.” Bruun-Meyer was also drawn to the idea of having a live, participatory event. “I like that it’s not digital,” she said. “Balloons are so easy to see right away.” Situated at the west side of Trinity Bellwoods, it was easy to see the buzz around the idea. Within an hour of the

June 7 project, many of the balloons had already been taken by families and others strolling around. While most children gravitated toward the colours they loved most, many engaged in the project. Victoria Rauseo was at the park and chose a blue balloon, which represented the city’s waterfront. “It’s beautiful and I just got into rowing, so I’ll be out

there,” she said. Boston native Michael Breen was also there and walked away with a yellow balloon, representing diversity in the city. “I love it here,” Breen said. “There’s more diversity here than in many other cities I’ve been to.” Esther Chan, part of the artist collective who call themselves the Camden Collective, was there to

engage each passerby of the balloon forest. “The people who have come by have really responded well to it,” she said. “They’ve given some thoughtful answers. One twoyear old even picked a public transportation balloon and said she liked the streetcars,” Chan said. This is the first installation by the group, and hopefully one of many for the friends. Though they had originally planned to hold the instillation at an abandoned space, Bruun-Meyer said the venue and overall 100 in 1 Day initiative worked out well. “It just seemed like a really great event, sort of more grassroots, that Toronto has been lacking,”

Stay politically engaged once the polls close A

ffordable housing in Toronto Centre. Improving opportunities for youth in Etobicoke North. Hospital mergers in Scarborough-Guildwood. Helping immigrants transition smoothly in Toronto. Accessibility in Parkdale-High Park. Should the city walk away from the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB)? These were just a few of the issues we put to provincial candidates leading up to tonight’s provincial election. So many more issues were raised throughout the campaign with those hoping to fill seats in the legislature – during our view Ontario debates, at your front door or on the streets. Keep local Regardless of how you voted – or how you’re intending to vote issues at – remaining politically engaged after the results are tallied is far forefront more important. We, the electorate, more often than not engage only during an election campaign – when it’s exciting to do so. Rarely do we continue that engagement between elections. This reality is unfortunate. Change is made every day, when residents across the city (and the province) continue to push what is important to them. Granted, not everything makes it to the top of a growing list of issues, but not demanding better of our politicians certainly doesn’t change a thing. Health care, education, jobs, the economy, transportation – these are big ticket items that impact the entire province, but it’s the local issues like decisions at the OMB that impact a community and really makes a difference in the everyday lives of Torontonians. After the dust settles, and another provincial government is elected, it is time for residents to continue to push on those important issues. Send letters to your newly elected or re-minted MPP, attend town halls, join a residents’ association, bring your neighbours together to fight for something important. Do something. That way, when it’s time to head to the polls once again, you know that you’ve at least tried to make a difference.

Long municipal campaign good for voters Nearly six months into Toronto’s marathon mayoral race, leading candidate Olivia Chow has presented a novel idea: cut six months off the race, and let things get rolling on Canada Day. It’s n o t h i n g t h a t w e haven’t heard before. Toronto elects a mayor like nobody else, with a campaign period starting on Jan. 2 and continuing until late October. If there’s high interest in the position that year — whether for a lack of incumbent or, as in the case this year, a polarizing one — voters can be subjected to news clips, debates, op-ed pieces and now clever YouTube videos with a foot in all four seasons. It’s expensive and daunting and sometimes a little boring. Well, maybe not that last one. But Chow suggests that it is all a bit much — that there is nothing that can be said in 10 months that can’t also be said in four.

david nickle the city Chow does have a point. But it’s hard to say that a tiresome and lengthy debate about the future of our city is particularly harmful to that future. The fact is that while the campaign period runs a year, in times of complacency — the elections before the second terms of former mayors Mel Lastman and David Miller come to mind — the campaigns don’t really run that long at all. There was certainly some hand-wringing in 2006, when Miller gamely defended his mayoralty against city councillor Jane Pitfield and lawyer Stephen LeDrew, but that race didn’t really get going until the summer. And in 2000, Lastman barely bothered to run a campaign, as only the late Tooker Gomberg ran against him.

Toronto elects a mayor like nobody else, with a campaign period starting on Jan. 2 and continuing until late October.

But in years where the choice is less clear, our long campaign period offers advantages to voters that might be easy to overlook. First, it allows us to meet the candidates — and the candidates to meet us. A good mayoral candidate will start making the rounds of community groups early and often, both for the purpose of fundraising and for the purpose of building a platform. When not abused, this is exceedingly healthy — it keeps municipal government real, in a way that other more distant governments often aren’t. It also allows candidates who may not have the highest profiles a chance to build

those, outside the extraordinary advantages of celebrity and wealth that only a few can bring to the table. C h ow, f o r i n s t a n c e , entered the race with a well-established profile that included a well-timed book tour for her autobiography. John Tory entered the race a popular talk radio host with a long history in Toronto and Ontario politics. Rob Ford’s an incumbent from a wealthy family. So it’s good to be a Chow or a Tory or even a Ford in a four month campaign: not so much a Karen Stintz or a David Soknacki, who are still, six months in, struggling to build their own profiles. And unless we want to limit our mayoral choices to the rich and famous, it’s not so good to be us either. This is one issue that might be best to let lie.

Junction Craft Brewing makes special beer for Toronto beer festival LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Once the longtime home to the Canada Bread Factory, three years ago, the Junction’s 90 Cawthra Ave. was transformed into the Junction Craft Brewing, whose signature brew, Conductor’s Craft Ale, is a nod to the neighbourhood’s manufacturing history and its proximity to the junction of four railway lines. Originally on nearby Vine Avenue, President Tom Paterson, a High Park resident, and brewmaster Doug Pengelly of Parkdale, relocated to an industrial space where they’ve designed, built and installed a custom brewing system as well as a tap room and retail bottle shop where they sell their beer in five- and 10-ounce glasses, two-litre growlers and 500millilitre bottles. They are also familiar faces at regular events they host at the brewery as well as at beer festivals such as the upcoming Session Toronto Craft Beer Festival 2014 at

Yonge-Dundas Square, which takes place Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. “We set this brewery up to do innovative events as a way to get one-off brews out there,” Pengelly said. “With two different kettles, I can make four different brews in one day in about the same time other breweries make one. Our retail store has 11 different brews on tap.” When one runs out, they’ve got another to replace it. The business partners, who initially met while they both worked in the restaurant industry, will be introducing a new brew at Session Toronto, inspired by iconic rollercoaster designer Werner Stengel of Germany, a nod to Pegelly’s passion for rollercoasters. Stengel was instrumental in designing the first modern looping coaster, the “Revolution”, at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. “He’s pretty hardcore. He’s my inspiration,” said Pengelly during a conversation at the brewery. “He’s my rockstar.”

Junction Craft Brewing’s Doug Pengelly, left, and Tom Paterson show off their ales – the Brakeman’s and Conductor’s. Together with David Hayes they started the brewery in 2011.

Without divulging too much of his recipe, Pengelly said the Session brew will combine the tastes of India Pale Ale and German Hops. “We like to be at places where we can showcase what we do,” Paterson said. Paterson and Pengelly first connected when Paterson was the owner of The Paddock Tavern on Bathurst Street, a space he restored to its original 1940s jazz cocktail glory

days. Its menu was comprised of imported and Ontario craft beers, one of which was Saint Andrew’s Vienna Lager, brewed by Pengelly, who delivered it himself. Paterson vowed then to go into business with Pengelly and told him as much. “I told him I’d call him up one day,” Paterson said. Pengelly didn’t hold his breath. “I thought, ‘Yeah, sure, buddy,” he said. “Brewing is a

profession that people think, ‘Wow, that must be exciting, fascinating.’ It is, but it’s always a lot of hard work.” Pengelly has been brewing since 1989; first at home and then professionally since about 1995. He went to brewing school in California and worked at Upper Canada Brewery. “I’m the kind of person who likes to know how things work,” he said. Paterson spent more than 25 years in the restaurant industry. He had plans to open a hotel on College Street. It took him a couple of years to transition from restaurant to brewery. “It’s not an easy thing to untangle from (the restaurant business),” he said. It helped that he knew the sales people, drivers and owners of virtually all the breweries in Ontario. “I knew how the system worked and what I wanted to see from a brewery.” Pengally’s philosophy is, if you can’t drink three beers at one time, what’s the point

2014 Readers’ Choice Nominees nominee's spotlight Best Pizzeria

NEW SUMMER MENU

Pizzeria Defina creates award winning pizza Located on Roncesvalles, Pizzeria Defina serves authentic, wood oven pizzas, with a twist. While respecting the craft of authentic Italian artisan pizzas, Pizzeria Defina cooks with the philosophy that traditional pizzas can be inspired by different cuisines from around the world including Turkish Pidé and Morrocan Chicken Calzone. The new Mediterranean inspired summer menu offers a Sharing Pizza, Caprese Pizza, Grilled Fish and Octopus as well as Wood Fired Three Cheese Foccacia, and Wood Roasted Chicken Wings. To celebrate the World Cup Soccer in Brazil, Pizzeria Defina is offering a special FIFA inspiredmenuwithBrazilianPizza, specialty cocktails, imported beer and all games will be projected live. From the mozzarella cheese to the cured meats, all recipes are made with fresh local produce and plump, juicy tomatoes imported from Italy. Patrons can choose from two different kinds of traditional thin pizza crust Napoletana is softer and perfect for folding while the

Romana is thin, crispy and charred. In 2013 and once again in 2014, Isaac Mcdougall and Danilo Lupo, the two pizzaiolos from Defina, brought their culinary talents and innovative recipes to Las Vegas where they participated in the International Pizza Expo and competed for the Best Pizza Maker of theYear! Danilo, armed with his D.O.P. San Marzano tomato sauce, creamy bufala cheese from Campagna, Italy, Macedonian sausage, spinach and micro basil served on a secret Weiss bierpizzacrustsweptthecompetition for Best Traditional Style Pizza in the Regional Division. Isaac competed in the NonTraditional Division with his delicious Canadian Pizza with DOP San Marzano tomato sauce, bacon whiskey jam, double smoked bacon, Peameal bacon and Canadian cheddar. Both pizzailolos have successfully qualified at this year’s 2014 Pizza Expo and brought back even more innovative and delicious pizzas to RoncesvallesVillage. The pizzeria’s open concept al-

World Cup: catch all the action T

he World Cup begins today in Brazil, and fans across Toronto are preparing to wave their flags as they cheer on their favourite teams. Other than being in Brazil for this year’s world championship of soccer, which runs from June 12 to July 13, Toronto is probably the best place in the world for fans to catch the action. And our newspapers and our special World Cup Toronto website at www. insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO are the best places for coverage on the tournament in our city. Here’s how it works: • Enter www.insidetoronto.com/worldcupto and you will see the flags of all 32 teams taking part. Click

on the flag of your favourite country. • Now on your country’s site, you can see stories on the best places in the Greater Toronto Area to catch events linked to the team, stories on the teams, news stories and ultimately viewers’ guides about the World Cup in general. • There are recipes from all 32 countries for those interested in hosting a party, or just like the idea of trying different foods. Other stories will celebrate the many cultures who enjoy the World Cup. • We have a number of bloggers writing about the teams they are following. The World Cup starts June 12 with a game between host Brazil and

Croatia at 4 p.m. (EST) in Sao Paulo. There are 32 teams taking part in this year’s World Cup, broken up into eight groups of four. After playing each other in group play between June 12 and 26, the top two teams in each group will advance to the Round of 16 which begins June 28. Many Toronto neighbourhoods are known as gathering places for fans of certain countries to watch their teams’ games. In Toronto, these areas include Little Italy, Little Portugal, Koreatown, Corso Italia, and Greektown on the Danforth to name a few. See our story on the eight great places to watch a

Radio personality Alan Cross, left, Amir Salar Karami, Sohel Amiri and Xavier Melo belt out a tune at an interactive play-and-record station during the media launch of the Ontario Science Centre’s new exhibition The Science of Rock ‘N’ Roll.

New exhibit set to rock Ontario Science Centre FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Alan Cross remembers what his first thought was when asked if he would put together an exhibit for the Ontario Science Centre focusing on the connection between science and rock music. “They’re crazy,” said Cross, a Toronto radio personality and content developer for The Science of Rock’n’Roll, a new exhibit set to run through to Oct. 26 at the Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue science centre. The exhibit, which opened to the public June 11, explores how advances in science and technology have revolutionized music, and how it’s made, listened to, experienced and shared starting from 1877 to the present. Cross’ initial thought lasted all of 15 seconds, when he realized the history of rock music will be told in a way never done before. “It made all the sense in the world,” he told The Villager during the June 5 media preview. There was no such thing as portable music in the 1950s, as the 8-track player was first introduced in 1965, he said.

It’s a really great exhibit. It’s a hands-on, real exhibit. – Arkells guitarist Michael DeAngelis

“There are so many cool stories that have been forgotten,” Cross said, adding he hasn’t got a clue where music will head in the future. “We are in a transition. We are moving from many decades of possessing music to being able to access music. We no longer need to have the physical product.” The exhibit features seven areas made up of different interactive components, historical artifacts, informational walls and documentary videos. For an additional $2 on top of admission price, visitors are able to capture video footage of their rock star moments to share using The Science of Rock’n’Roll backstage pass available online. And of course, a rock’n’roll exhibit wouldn’t be complete without some live rock’n’roll. Juno-award winning band Arkells performed four songs

during the media preview, two of which – ‘Come To Light’ and ‘Never Thought That This Would Happen’ will be on their third studio album, titled High Noon, set for release Aug. 5. “It’s really a great exhibit,” guitarist Michael DeAngelis told The Villager while checking out the exhibit with fellow band members. “It’s a hands-on, real exhibit. The more you end up recording music, the more you understand science in sound in general.” In addition to the exhibit, the science centre will also host three ScienceROCKS! licensed events for those 19 years old and older. The evenings will include live performances, presentations, a chance to explore the exhibit and watch Rolling Stones at the Max on the big screen. The events will be held July 24, Aug. 21 and Sept. 18 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Advance tickets are available for $15 at www.ontariosciencecentre.ca/boxoffice/ or cost $18 at the door.
