YOUTH BUILD FRIENDSHIPS WITH NATURE AT OUTDOOR SCHOOL

By Casandra Turnbull Not everyone gets the chance to fulfill their childhood dreams. So, when the opportunity presented itself, Tara Carpenter jumped in with both feet. The time was now or never and if she didn’t act quickly, she might find ways to discourage herself from fulfilling her calling.

Her act now think later approach to entrepreneurship is one of the many reasons why GROWE Outdoor School is so successful today, nearly three years after its inception. Located at Five Oaks Education and Retreat Centre, the outdoor-based school focuses on nature and the environment with a child-led learning model.

“It was a dream of mine (opening an outdoor school) since I was 7 years old, growing up on a farm in Norfolk County,” explained Carpenter. “I always wanted to help the world and make it a better place. When I had my daughter, I realized the biggest impact I can have is through the children,” said the mother of two.

Around 7 years ago Carpenter started researching a movement that encourages alternate methods of education. It inspired her to enroll at Fanshawe College and complete the Adventure Expeditions and Interpretive Leadership Diploma program.

The decision to open the school at Five Oaks was a perfect fit for Carpenter. She had spent countless hours along the shores and trails of the Grand River as an interpretive guide on

both water and land with The Grand River Rafting Company. That job led to the creation of her own guided tour company called Grand River Outdoor Wilderness Education (GROWE). Using that name, and her vast knowledge of nature, Carpenter decided to merge her two dreams into one very successful reality.

Continued from page 4 “My dream is to instill in others the love, passion and respect I possess for nature. I believe that the benefits of engaging our youth in the great outdoors are immeasurable. I hope to inspire both children and their families to engage regularly in the natural world,” she said.

GROWE offers programming five days a week in two different age categories: Acorns (4-7 years old) and Eagles (7-12 years old). Approximately 80% of the students who are enrolled attend once a week in addition to their conventional school, whether that be in-class or virtually. The one-day a week is an enrichment to what they are already learning at school, said Carpenter. GROWE’s enrollment currently sits at 50 students. Their mantra is ‘quality not quantity.’ Students in the Acorn class have a 6:1 teacher to student ratio and the Eagles has an 8:1 ratio.

To help lead pupils, Carpenter relies on her team of like-minded instructors: Laurel Grieve and Andrew Moores. Grieves is a Paris, Ontario resident who is very passionate about nature and has a lifetime of experience working with children.

October 30, 2021 eight years of outdoor education experience and is an avid traveler in his spare time.

“Part of my vision was not only about the connection the kids will feel with nature, but also the connection they have with each other and their nature mentors,” said Carpenter, referring to her colleagues who go by their nature names: Pinecone and Sting Ray. “I couldn’t ask for better educators, they are emotionally invested in what they do.”

Carpenter, Grieve and Moores are proud of their hands-on approach. It allows for a more effective learning environment. An average day at GROWE isn’t structured, and that’s what students and parents like the most about its curriculum. Children determine the lessons of the day, based on questions they have or objects or animals they come across during regular hikes and expeditions. “It’s whatever nature brings to us, nothing is forced.”

This approach encourages the kids to learn about a topic they find interesting. It helps capture their attention and ensures they retain the lessons they are taught. When children are naturally curious, they learn. Oddly enough, bones and feathers seem to be the most sought-out item on their hikes. And because they often come across some pretty cool things, Carpenter encourages children to have their own nature boxes at home to store their findings. In addition to exploration and physical activity through hiking, children learn survival skills, complete nature themed crafts and games, den (fort) building, learning to cook outdoors with ingredients grown in the wild, gardening, writing in journals and reading books.

“I like that you get to do different things,” said 9-year-old Arbor Doucette. “See, right now I am grating cinnamon into pumpkin seeds to give the seeds a yummy taste,” she said as she graded shavings from a cinnamon stick into a pile of seeds she recovered from her pumpkin.

Continued from page 5 Seven-year-old Kaden Gutter said his favourite part of GROWE are the hikes because he gets to explore, although he admits the sit spot (a form of meditation), making campfires and cooking fish are also on his list of favourite activities.

Autumn Harding, who also attends St. George German School, said she’s taken skills she’s acquired at GROWE back to her other school and her friends always ask her ‘how I learned to do that.’

“I’ve learned about animals and how to tie knots and how to make campfires,” she recalled. “I like mostly everything here because I like the outdoors. It’s like a really long recess all day, but you learn so much.”

Parents of GROWE students are equally amazed with the connection their children develop with nature. One pupil in particular was very apprehensive and scared to go on the hikes. Since attending the school the parents have noticed a complete 360 in this child’s attitude towards the great outdoors.

“The family was sending me pictures of this child climbing mountains out west on a family vacation,” said Carpenter. It’s a testament to the confidence GROWE instills in its young attendees.

Carpenter attributes that confidence boost to the school’s open daily routine and its unconventional approach to learning.

“Children are so over structured; in the classroom, in their extracurricular activities, they’re told what to do all the time and it takes away from their confidence and imagination building. Here we offer a lot of freedom to the kids,” Carpenter explained.

“Kids are allowed to be kids. We encourage individuality.” There’s a list of reasons why parents decide to enroll at GROWE, said

Carpenter. Some kids struggle academically, others are academically brilliant and need to be further challenged. Some students join because they love the outdoors and other students join because their parents feel they need to detach from technology.

Whatever the reason, at the end of the day the outcome is the same. “They develop friendships here. Friendships with kids outside their normal school bubble and friendships with nature.”

Carpenter recently completed the accreditation process and is now considered a designated private school registered with The Ministry of Education. GIFT CARD FRENZY RAFFLE TO BENEFIT LOCAL HEALTH HUB

By Casandra Turnbull You won’t want to miss out on a gift card frenzy that could make your Christmas shopping a whole lot more budget friendly.

The PrimaCare Community Family Health Team has launched a campaign to raise funds for its soon-to-be new home: The Cowan Community Health Hub. Between now and November 26th you can purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win one of three gift card prizes, generously donated by local businesses and members of the Family Health Team.

First prize is valued at over $1,000, second prize over $700 and third prize over $300.

So far response from the campaign has been a pleasant surprise, said organizers. “We are overwhelmed with the kindness that our community has shown us in supporting the fundraiser,” said Jennifer Smith, member of the PrimaCare FHT social committee. The organization’s social committee developed the concept because they figured it would be a win-win situation for everyone. Funds would be raised for the healthy hub, and in return for contributions, people will have the opportunity to take home big prizes. The FHT hopes to raise $10,000 to contribute to the health hub, which is set to open next month. Their pledge helps put the County of Brant in the home stretch of its public fundraising campaign. So far, 80% of the $2 million fundraising goal has been met. Total cost of the 41,365 square foot facility is estimated at $13 million.

Construction began in the summer of 2020.

and other professionals working together to provide collaborative team-based health care in Paris, Ayr and St. George. It’s one of about a dozen organizations that will call the Health Hub its home next month.

LEGION RENOVATION PROJECT FUNDED BY COMMUNITY & GRANTS

By Casandra Turnbull When Covid hit and the province implemented lockdowns and regulations, members of The Paris Legion decided to take advantage of a not-so-ideal situation and turn it into an opportunity.

Renovations to the aging building were imminent. The original house portion of the building was constructed in 1860 and bequeathed to the Legion in 1937 by Franklin Smoke. Over the years, the building suffered from natural wear and tear and deterioration.

Plans were already in the works to begin the much-needed repairs well before Covid. In July 2019 the public fundraising campaign began with an initial goal of $75,000 but it was eventually doubled to $150,000 to cover the cost of the extensive renovations.

“We wanted to have all the funding in place before proceeding,” said Roy Haggart, Chair of Special Projects for The Paris Legion, Branch 29. They did not want to dip into any funds normally allocated for day-to-day operating costs. “And we did not touch our general fund money. Everything was raised by grants and donations,” confirmed Andy Moran, President of the Legion.

The first order of business was applying for municipal, provincial, and federal grants.

Haggart recalls applying for the Enabling Accessibility Fund. After submitting their application, they were pleasantly surprised to receive approval for $43,000, much more than the $16,000 they hoped to receive.

A major aspect of the renovation was implementing a handicap accessible entrance and bathroom.

Continued from Page 8 The accessible ramp, located at the back of the building, required some engineering to redesign an existing fire escape from a second-floor exit door. Both Haggart and Moran thanked Don Plumstead and Cahoon Engineering for the professional design and drawings. The accessible entrance was on the Legion’s radar for 1012 years, but they just didn’t have the funds to complete the project, according to Haggart. So, it was a relief to finally check it off the list.

“I also have to thank the County of Brant for their support. They were very helpful with our plans and very patient as well,” said Haggart.

In addition to the accessible entrance and new fire escape, the legion now has new handicap accessible doors, and an accessible washroom on the main level, just off the lounge area. The former board/meeting room was knocked out in favour of the new bathroom, as well as a small kitchen. The kitchen was a welcome addition since the Legion started hosting BBQs in 2020 and expanded its menu in 2021 to include a wide variety of pub-style selections.

The main floor received a fresh coat of paint, the electrical was upgraded, new custom cabinets and anti-slip floors were installed behind the bar, a security system was connected, and a new furnace and central air system were installed.

One legion member took the initiative and raised money to purchase a new 82” television for the lounge area, which is great for entertainment and event functions, said Moran.

Aside from grants, approximately $25,000 of the funds raised came from private donations made by residents, said Haggart.

“It was very rewarding to see members of the community come and help out,” he acknowledged, referring to both monetary and physical labour and skillset donations. People who could not give financially instead donated their time and expertise to provide some of the labour required for the renovations.

Now that the renovations have commenced, there are more plans for future projects.

“When you have an old building, the renovations snowball,” said Moran. “The renovations are never finished!”

Long term projects include making the second-floor handicap accessible and replacing the flat roof over the lounge area of the building.

Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead

By Carolina Saenz While Halloween is the most commonly celebrated holiday around this time of year in NorthAmerica, November brings a different festivity to Mexicans around the world.

Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd to honour and remember loved ones who have passed. It is a celebration of life and death, and an opportunity to reminisce and cherish memories of loved ones.

Rather than viewing death as something negative and being fearful of it, Day of the Dead embraces death as a natural part of life.

And more importantly, guided by the belief that our loved ones are always with us as long as we remember them, it presents an opportunity to openly welcome them back into our lives.

The Mexican representation of death comes in female form, and it is called by a variety of names such as La Catrina, La Huesuda, La Pelona, La Calaca, among others. These satirical representations portray her as an elegant skeleton lady trying to take us all with her. It is a humorous way of interpreting death and the influence it has on our everyday lives.

Although this holiday is celebrated differently across Mexico and by Mexicans all around the world, the most traditional celebrations include setting-up an altar, drinking hot chocolate, eating pan de muerto, participating in parades, dressing up as catrinas, and even enjoying night-long celebrations at graveyards. At schools, alongside celebrating Halloween, children in Mexico often compete to create the best altars, door decorations, and may even dress up as catrinas and catrines.

Muertos.

Altars play a major role in celebrating Día de Muertos. A basic altar is set up by displaying the photographs of loved ones who have passed and everything they love. These usually include their favourite food, drinks, and treats.

Alongside these, a glass of water, chocolate, and pan de muerto are served. Candles are lit and religious images can also be displayed.

Sugar skulls decorate altars and are also enjoyed as a treat. Mexican Marigolds guide the spirits home and are often spread to form a pathway towards the altar. Altars are personalized with love and care, and although bittersweet for some, it is a happy occasion.

Just make sure to provide all your loved one’s favourites if you don’t want them to come and “pull your feet” or scare you!

In my altar, gummy bears, Malboros, and a shot of mezcal are a must for my dear grandfather. I am fairly certain he will not visit if provided otherwise.

FRIENDLIEST HOUSE IN TOWN ATTRACTS NEW MEMBERS The Paris Curling Club held two open houses in October to help attract new members to its already thriving club. As a result, several curious attendees ended up joining as new members for the upcoming 2021/2022 season. The open house concept replaced the club’s regular Learn to Curl league usually offered in the fall. With restrictions in place at the start of the season, the Club opted to host the open house style events to give people a chance to experience the sport firsthand, in a two-hour crash course!

The club offers a variety of leagues for men, women, and youth of all ages. In 2018 they celebrated their 175th Anniversary. The history of the club dates to 1843 when its original members gathered to play on Watts Pond or the Nith River before a covered rink was built in 1877 on Elm Street. In 1961 the Paris Curling Club, in conjunction with The Paris Agricultural Society, built the present club house, affectionately known today as The Friendliest House in Town!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON PARIS OPTIMIST CLUB

By Casandra Turnbull This week’s minor hockey volunteer spotlight is shining on The Paris Optimist Club, one of the organization’s longest standing supporters.

The Optimist Club has sponsored the PMHA U13 Rep team for over half a century. It’s a partnership made in heaven as it aligns with the Optimist Club’s vision to bring out the best in youth. Each season a dozen or more youth put on the Optimist-branded hockey jersey and optimistically develop their skills.

Marilyn McCulloch has been a member of the Optimist scene since 1996. “I joined because I knew all the great things the club did for the youth in our community,” said McCulloch.

“And I’ve loved every minute of it.”

McCulloch’s ties to local hockey club date back over 50 years when her eldest son played on the Optimist sponsored team, she recalls.

All three of Marilyn & Gerald’s sons played hockey and their daughter played ringette.

“We spent a lot of time in the Syl Apps Arena and on the road travelling to games,” she fondly admitted. The family tradition carried on to the next generation when her grandchildren took interest in the sport as well. The self-proclaimed Toronto Maple Leaf fan also admitted while she enjoys watching NHL games, she much preferred space in the Annex building for meetings when required and organizing an equipment exchange. watching her children and grandchildren’s games. The Paris Optimist Club is a vibrant service club that has supported youth and youth-based initiatives in the community for over 70 years.

They have a strong partnership with minor hockey, as well as minor baseball, soccer, and football at Paris District High School. They support Scouts and Girl Guides, the Christmas Hamper Program, Food for Thought program and Camp Trillium, to name a few. The Club honours Grade 8 students each year with the Spirit of Optimism Graduation Award. Within the last few years, they’ve donated $5,000 to the reconstruction of the baseball diamonds at Lion’s Park and spearheaded the construction of the skateboard park located behind the Optimist building on Elm Street. Plans are currently in the works to start phase 2 of the park in the near feature.

PLAYERS LACE UP FOR ROB JOHNSTON MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

By Casandra Turnbull He gave 100 percent every time he was on the ice and his friends and fellow teammates will always remember the heart he brought to every game. Those were some of the touching tributes shared during Rob Johnston’s memorial service following his accidental death in an automobile accident on July 8, 2000. The Paris man was only 34 years old at the time of his death. He was married to Jennie (Azzopardi) and had just welcomed daughter Cristina. Several years after his passing the family had the opportunity to keep his memory alive through his favourite pastime: hockey. Around 2003 then Paris Minor Hockey President (PMHA) Rick Shannon approached the family with the idea of starting a memorial tournament in Rob’s honour. The PMHA executive voted on the idea, and it was unanimously passed. The family was happy to see Rob’s love of the sport carry on, explained Denise Johnston, Rob’s mother.

“We thought it was a great idea. It was an honour,” said Denise of her and her husband Dave’s reaction. Dave passed away several years later in 2009.

“Rob just loved hockey. His brother played too but Rob sort of thrived on it. He made a lot of friends playing hockey,” Denise recalled.

Rob’s fascination with hockey started at the tender age of five. He played through all the ranks of minor hockey and eventually found his niche with The Paris Industrial Men’s Hockey League on the Truckers team.

He was often described as the life of the team, a very social and kind-hearted player. A friend who memorialized him put it simply: “He loved life, loved people and loved just being himself.”

His teammates affectionately called him Cob – a nickname stemming back to a poor attempt to eat corn on the cob with no front teeth as a

child. It was a nickname that stuck with him his whole life, said Denise. If Rob were alive today, Denise said he would most certainly be honoured to witness the success of the tournament, but at the same time would remain extremely modest.

The Johnston family has taken part in the tournament in various capacities over the years. They’ve played an active role in dropping the puck to presenting medals. One year Denise recalls dropping the puck alongside her children Steven and Leigh Anne. It so happened that Leigh Anne’s son was taking the faceoff that year (pictured above).

The Rob Johnston Memorial Rep Hockey Tournament kicks off in Paris next weekend on November 5-7. Due to an overwhelming response from participating clubs, PMHA expanded the tournament format allowing a total of 24 teams in two divisions, U11 and U13. Teams are coming from as far away as Brighton and Wallaceburg. This is the first Paris-hosted tournament since January of 2020.

Paris will represent with a local team in teach division. There are approximately 20-30 behind the scenes volunteers consisting of executive members, parents, and students, said PMHA President Mike Sinclair. CHRISTMAS IN PARIS CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

By Carolina Saenz With the holidays fast approaching, the town of Paris is getting ready for a traditional celebration: Christmas in Paris (CIP).

Presented by Kindred Spirits Artisans of Paris, this annual event is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021. Not being able to host the event last year due to Covid, this year’s event promises to bring a wonderfully unique selection of local artisan gifts, while also adhering to Covid regulations.

The three-day event is held at the Paris Fairgrounds on November 5th, 6th, and 7th. This location allows for free parking and wheel-chair accessibility. And in celebration of its 30th anniversary year, admission is free. In previous years, admission fees funded the annual bursary program that supports Brant County high-school students pursuing an arts education. When Covid cancelled Christmas in Paris in 2020, the bursary was funded directly by the Kindred Spirits Artisans of Paris organization.

So, to alleviate the pressure of funding the bursary again, organizers are welcoming donations in support of the bursary program.

While the event is running at full capacity, strict regulations will be followed. All in attendance, including vendors and volunteers, must be doublevaccinated (plus 14 days from your second dose).

Everyone over the age of 11 will be required to show their vaccine certificate with QR code and valid photo ID. In cases where medical exemptions apply, a verified doctor’s note and valid photo ID must be provided. All in attendance will be required to provide their contact information for contact tracing and attendance will be tracked at the door to ensure the event operates according to capacity restrictions. In addition to these measures, all attendees 2-years-old and older must wear a face covering. Other safety measures include the sanitizing of surfaces, providing sanitizer to the public, and limiting the use of cash. Attendees are encouraged to pay using credit and debit, although cash will be accepted, and an ATM will be available. As opposed to previous years where a

central cash station was held to process all purchases, this year vendors will be processing purchases directly. This will limit the amount of cash being handled and shorten line-ups.

Lorie McCreary, Chair of Christmas in Paris, explained the importance of following regulations and the benefits that events such as CIP bring to our city. “It is a win-win for Paris”, McCreary says.

Attendees come from Paris, surrounding areas, and from way outside of Paris. Many not only attend CIP but take a stroll downtown, visit restaurants, and enjoy the beauty Paris has to offer.

Many years ago, CIP was an event running directly from artists’ studios and homes. People would go to a variety of locations to access what different artists had to offer. It eventually became a onelocation event, and this year marks its second year at the Fairgrounds location.

Other events hosted by the Kindred Spirits Artisans of Paris include an art centre at the Springtime in Paris event as well as workshop retreats. These were all cancelled in 2020 due to Covid, but McCreary is hopeful these events can come back next year, saying “the vaccination has opened up a lot of opportunities to get back to normal.”

Kindred Spirits Artisans of Paris are happy to host CIP this year, after a year long absence. CIP will showcase a great collection of local artisan gifts including knitting, pottery, fibre arts, wood turnings, paintings, jewelry, silk scarves, soaps, wreaths, and much more. Featuring three new vendors and food from the local Dog-Eared Cafe and Legends, CIP will have it all to get started on your holiday shopping.

Hours on November 5, 6, and 7 are as follows: Friday, 1 p.m.- 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.

MEXICO DAY 1: OUTDOOR MURALS, COBBLESTONE STREETS AND DELICIOUS TREATS Well, it’s T-Day (Travel Day). The living room is covered in bags, and I don’t think there is a spot for one more thing!

While I’m not usually a heavy packer, there are a few things my friend can’t get down in Mexico. Balmy breezes and brilliant sunshine yes…. but no wine gums or Swiss Chalet sauce!

So, I’ve packed a taste of home. Along with a few other treats for her birthday celebration after I arrive.

For entry into Mexico, the only requirement is a health form completed online with a QR code, 12 hours before departure. Coming home will be another story. As I’m staying through until December 1, my friends and husband will do the practice run for me. We’ve downloaded the ArriveCan App, but until you need it there is no way to test it.

What a blur travel day was! Getting on a plane at 1 a.m. is definitely off my list of things I’d like to do again!

Flight time to Mexico City was a little over five hours and thank goodness we were ahead of schedule. Plus, there is a time change of one hour behind us, which helped. The line up for immigration was over an hour long and starting at just after 5 a.m., with my connecting flight at 7 a.m., boarding at 6:30 a.m., that left me literally running to catch it. And forget about social distancing. This line snaked through multiple lanes, back and forth on itself, over and over. And this was just for foreign travelers, returning Mexican travelers had a separate line. Day one saw lots of rain here but at least it was T-shirt temperatures. Not so back home I’ve heard.

I have a lovely room at my friend’s, but I’m a light sleeper, so I closed the door to keep the two adorable cats out overnight. There are patio doors from my room with vertical blinds on it to the outside courtyard. And stories of giant spiders on the courtyard. At some point during

the night I woke up to these blinds rattling. I was startled awake but was basically too tired to act. I’ve had a pretty good run so far…if I’m to be killed by something now, so be it. I discovered in the morning that I’d kicked off a pillow in my sleep. Imagination is a strange bedfellow.

After a great sleep, I’m ready for the adventure to begin! I enjoyed a very lazy, coffee filled morning, and then we were off.

Our stop at the gluten free bakery and meeting with the owner Ross was delicious and interesting. Ross is a native of New York City but has been in Mexico for 16 years. Originally not a baker, he was lured into this by his wife, Margarita. “She wanted to make a cake for my birthday, but I have a gluten sensitivity” he told us. All the wonderful treats grew from that. Our purchases included double chocolate chip cookies, fruit bagels and some bratwurst sausages. Now he owns 2 bakeries, this one and one in Guadalajara.

Continued from page 16 While this is a bakery boasting comfy seats and couches, the walls are covered in bright paintings done by Ross. Then we were off to the little grocery store. Ajijic (I’ve been corrected….Ah Hee HeeK) is a small town, so most grocery stores are small businesses. But the town does boast a Walmart, not shocking, I guess. A couple of purchases for our Wednesday dinner and time to head home.

The way home included a leisurely drive through the quaint, cobblestone streets. With stops at several outdoor wall murals. Art is everywhere around you here! My favourite one on the side of a building incorporates two telephone poles. If you stand at a slight angle, across the street, the poles are swallowed into the painting and disappear. Such talent! Passing the horses was also a treat. Motorcycles and horses have the right of way here.

A little spruce up and off to our dinner reservation at Adelita’s. Tuesday night is the rib special here. The restaurant is a lovely indoor/outdoor venue.

And the smiling, decorated skull on the bar caught my eye immediately. The tables are well spaced, definitely social distanced, waiters wore masks and there seemed to be a full house.

Thankfully, the menu offered a half rack option which seemed a little overwhelming when first put in front of me. With some perseverance, I managed to get through about half. I was told dessert was mandatory, so a doggy bag was acquired. I was also able to get through half of a yummy brownie topped with ice cream.

Dinner lasted about two hours, which I was told wasn’t too shabby for Gringos. Usually, meals are savoured, and diners can spend four hours or more over their meals.

Face masks are prevalent all over town, removed when dining and hand sanitizer readily available, and seems to be well used.

Wednesday had us out and about again. Ajijic is a bustling little town. With friendly, smiling residents in abundance. While most people speak a bit of English, Spanish is definitely the main language here. There does seem to always be someone around to translate if needed, which is great.

Seeing masked people everywhere is definitely different than my last trip here, but it’s very reassuring that taking this virus seriously is something we are all doing. I haven’t been any more worried about it here, than I was at home.

WOMEN INSPIRING WOMEN

By Casandra Turnbull When the Women’s Institute (WI) experienced an urban resurgence in the UK with younger women joining the organization, a couple of local women decided to try that approach here in Paris.

In 2015 Maggie Wilson and Kate Belair officially started Brant County’s newest WI branch called: Women Inspiring Women. Since women are multi-tasking like never before, the local chapter is adapting with a more modern approach to the core foundation of the Women’s Institute values.

“Our branch is not your grandmother’s Women’s Institute,” explained Elaine Tulley who joined in 2015 and now serves as the current President.

“We are what our members want us to be. If you give people what they want and need you will be successful,” added Tulley.

Part of the Paris group’s modern adaptation includes the use of its website and social media platforms to reach existing and potentially new members, and more recently, the use of Zoom to carry on with its meetings and workshops.

Members have the opportunity to take part in several sub-groups such as the Book Club, Craft Group and Dinner Club.

It’s a far cry from the early days at the turn of the 20th century when the first resolution passed by the WI in 1918 called for ‘sufficient supply of convenient and sanitary houses, being of vital importance to women in the country,’ and its members were encouraged to take part in public life and improve the conditions of rural life.

The WI movement was founded by Erland Lee and Janet Lee with its first meeting in Stoney Creek Ontario in 1897. Adelaide Hoodless was invited as the first guest speaker. She addressed

a meeting for the wives of members of the Farmers’ Institute. While the concept was founded in Canada with the birth of many new chapters in the early 1900s, it wasn’t until 1915 when the organization planted seeds in the United Kingdom and found major success.

Fast-forward 100 years and there are 2,600 members in 220 branches across Ontario. Today, women are working full time, raising children, volunteering in their communities, participating in organized sports, are elected members of municipal, provincial, and federal political scenes, and they successfully lead organizations, charities, and clubs within their communities.

Women are more than mothers and wives; they are pillars of their community and the Women’s Institute celebrates the demands of this modern lifestyle.

The Paris group has approximately 38 active members who specialize in a variety of skills and each bring a unique set of expertise to meetings and workshops. The women range in age from early 20s to early 80s. Tully explained, “People find us on Facebook, or our website and their stories are always similar. They’re always looking for like-minded women.”

Tulley pointed out that “the intergenerational exchange is amazing to witness.”

It’s not your grandmother’s Women’s Institute Continued from page 18 The Paris WI meets the second Thursday of every month from September to June and hosts many events and social outings throughout the year. A variety of guest speakers address the group at each Thursday meeting. November’s upcoming guest speaker is Melinda Munroe, Brant County’s integrity commissioner. She will conduct a diversity workshop.

With a mantra of learning a new skill and self improvement, the women held their last meeting in September at The Paris Lawn Bowling Club.

Their next big event is the Christmas Maker Series starting in November. The Women Inspiring Women WI presents a three-part series featuring three classic holiday recipes and will take place entirely over Zoom. The event is open to the public – you do not have to be a member to part-take. All skill levels are welcome to join in. Each session costs $20 or join all three sessions for $50. Friday November 12 at 7 pm participants will craft the classic Fruitcake.

Thursday November 25th at 6:30pm features the fine art of pie pastry (apple or pecan) and finally on December 5th at 1pm you can learn to make the perfect gingerbread cookies. This session is kid friendly. You can register for these sessions by email at elainetullywiwpresident@gmail.com.

Like all WI hosted events, a portion of the proceeds go back to the group to offset operating costs, but a portion also goes towards community donations and their scholarship program. Community donations are determined by a Program Committee. Each year WI donates a couple of $500 scholarships to local high school students. The winning recipient must submit an essay and the 2021 theme was ‘Brant Women Who Inspire Us.’ This year’s chosen recipients were Lauren Haley of St. George and

“I’ve become good friends with women in this group, some younger than me and some older than me,” said Janice Kyle, a member who’s also in charge of communications. “I have made so many friendships that will last a lifetime and I am so glad that I have met so many amazing, community-minded women,” Kyle added. Kyle has been a member since its inception. She recalls seeing an advertisement for the group and the rest is history. In addition to friendships, Kyle said being a member has helped keep her mind active with crafting and workshops and has helped to enhance her technology and social media skills.

COMMUNITY NEWS The Community Christmas Toy & Hamper Program in Paris begins accepting applications on November 1st. Applications can be picked up and returned to the Brant County customer service office at 66 Grand River St. N. in Paris. Monetary donations are being accepted at the office.
