COMMUNITY NEWS Two million cubic feet of foam coming to Paris this summer!

5k Foam Fest is a family-friendly event happening on August 6th

By Casandra Turnbull Things could get a little wet and wild this summer at the Paris Fairgrounds.

The 5K Foam Fest is bringing waterslides, mud pits and a ton of foam to Paris on August 6 where participants can take part in 22 obstacles designed to test your co-ordination and ability to have fun!

Festival organizers, 365 Sports Events, were before the Administrative & Operations Committee last month to request a special occasion permit for the family-friendly festival.

The festival runs at various cities throughout Ontario. There will be seven stops this summer including London, Ottawa, Barrie, Toronto, St. Catharines, Windsor and Paris. With the idea that obstacles are meant to be overcome, a portion of the proceeds from each event is donated to Make-AWish Canada to help transform the lives of children who are over coming some pretty big health obstacles of their own. Since the partnership was formed in 2018, Foam Fest has raised over $200,000 for Make-A-Wish Canada.

COMMUNITY NEWS The event is open for ages 7 and up and there will be a free kid’s zone for kids under 6, adult supervision required. This zone will have a mini inflatable obstacle course, a bouncy castle and games.

The main course will feature 22 obstacles ranging from walls, mud pits and cargo climbs to giant inflatable obstacles, including the word’s largest inflatable waterslide. “And you can’t forget about the 2.5 million cubic feet of foam pumped out at each event,” said Michael Lambert, vice president and general manager of 365 Sports Events.

You don’t have to be a conditioned athlete to participate, it’s open to everyone regardless of your skill level or athletic ability. “Our event is all

about having fun. It’s geared for all ages and abilities; all obstacles are optional. Walk it, run it, charge it or just fun it,” said Lambert., adding everyone is encouraged to complete the event at their own pace.

Event organizers are chomping at the bit to return to in-person events after a two-year hiatus.

This Paris stop was an added surprise as organizers originally planned to hold this event at Chicopee Ski Resort before the pandemic hit. Due to renovations at the resort, the CEO deemed the venue unsafe to operate the event so organizers had to find a new stop this summer. “Our team worked quickly to find a venue in close proximity that had the space to run a Foam Fest. We came across the Paris Fairgrounds, and it ticked all the

Plant sale sold out within in two hours

By Casandra Turnbull The Horticultural Society’s Annual Plant sale returned with a big bang last weekend, selling out of annuals and perennials within two hours.

Chalk it up to a long, pandemic ridden winter or the Year of the Garden or even the fact that the sale was cancelled for two straight years, but whatever the reason, folks were eager to get their hands on some plants to kick start the gardening season.

“We had an amazing turnout. People were lined up outside at 7:30 am. When we opened the doors at 8 a.m. There was a steady stream of people entering. It was a great sight to see after our inactivity during Covid,” said Serryn Stephenson, Horticultural Society publicity director.

The sale typically ends with a plant auction to sell the remaining stock before the end of the morning, however, this year that was not necessary because everything was sold by 10 a.m. for the first time in the sale’s history.

Stephenson said there was a few hundred shoppers who stopped by to view an assortment of plants that spanned over 16 tables. The sale offered everything from native plants to herbs, vegetables, perennials, shrubs and annuals. A majority of the club’s 75 members contributed to the sale’s success from volunteering to host the event to growing the perennials to sell.

The Horticultural Society’s annual plant sale, held last weekend, was sold out two hours after opening its doors. Proceeds go towards horticultural education, a high school bursary and the beautification of downtown and area parks.

COMMUNITY NEWS DOUG HANNA NAMED CANADIAN GARDEN HERO

It’s the Year of the Garden and the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA) wants to celebrate by recognizing the many dedicated and inspiring individuals making a positive impact in their community. The OHA asked each society to nominate a Garden Hero, someone who contributes to the development of the community’s garden culture, exhibits and shares their knowledge and inspires through leadership. The Paris society selected Doug Hanna as its Garden Hero.

Doug’s knowledge and expertise in horticulture will be highlighted on social media, the Trillium newsletter and listed on the Year of the Garden website from June 11 – 19. Doug is one of the society’s founding members joining in 1986. He is a past president and an invaluable member who spends countless hours organizing public clean-ups around town. COMMUNITY NEWS Calling all Teddy Bears to the fairgrounds June 5th Kiwanis event jam-packed with family activities

By Casandra Turnbull The Paris Kiwanis Club is excited to introduce a new community event that is designed to bring families together for some good old-fashioned fun – and it has the full support of a lot of local businesses.

The Kiwanis Teddy Bear Picnic is coming to the Paris Fairgrounds on June 5.

“We have had this on our wish list for some time. It’s actually a natural extension of the Teddy Bear clinics we’ve held for a number of years on Family Day weekend,” said Sheila Moore, immediate past president of Kiwanis Club of ParisBrant. She’s referring to past Kiwanis-sponsored events where children were encouraged to bring their favourite ‘stuffie’ for a medical check-up to provide a comfortable and fun environment for children to learn about doctors’ visits and to feel comfortable as a patient. Following suit with the

success of that program, the Kiwanis have invited St. John Ambulance to be on site for the picnic where First Responders will run a medical clinic for the stuffed animals and their children caretakers.

TopRock Construction is sponsoring a Teddy Bear Art contest. At home, children can create a picture of a teddy bear, hand-drawn, coloured or painted, and bring it to the picnic for a chance to win an amazing ‘big’ prize supporting the teddy bear theme, teased Moore. There will be two age categories: children 5 and under and children ages 6-8. Entries

will be accepted at the Kiwanis tenant.

Mary Maxim is sponsoring the prizes for The Most Creatively Dressed stuffed animal contest.

Children who brought a dressed up stuffie will be called to the stage to participate.

While it’s not technically a contest, youngsters might want to stop by the Peak Alliance Realty tent to enter a ballot into a free draw for some more prizes. Any child that brings a stuffed animal is eligible to enter.

The Teddy Bear Picnic is a free community event that is only made possible by the tremendous support from major sponsors and prize sponsors, said Moore. She added the event really aligns with the Kiwanis mandate of improving the lives of children.

“Every child deserves to grow up in a community that nurtures them and helps them grow. Our Kiwanis Teddy Bear Picnic will provide children an opportunity to be outside, get some exercise,

have a taste of competition and learn a few things that they can take with them into the future,” said Moore. Above all, she added, it’s a family event for children and adult alike, so be prepared to team up as a family unit for some fun, top secret games.

It's a rain or shine event. If the weather does not cooperate the picnic will move indoors. There will be a limited number of picnic tables so feel free to bring your own blankets and chairs.

There will be cash-only snack stands set up by the Wholesale Company, Original Kettlecorn and an ice cream truck to satisfy your sweet tooth. Impressive season for rookie rugby team Paris girls heading to CWOSSA next week The Paris District High School girl’s rugby team may have consisted of mostly amateur players, yet they went all the way to the Athletic Association of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk counties finals this week. Despite a strong effort, Paris was unable to overcome a tough BCI team in the finals, losing 62-5. The team’s coaches are proud of the girls’ accomplishments and look forward to the team’s upcoming game at CWOSSA. The action-packed week started when the lady Panthers took to the pitch Monday in semi-final rugby action versus St. John’s. Looking for revenge after a close loss to start the season, the Panthers dominated play from the whistle.

The forwards set the tone, with Sara DeBoer, Fiona Parkinson and Petra Keefe hitting hard and running harder.

This work opened space for the backs, and Serena Gambacort was able to find a gap and race into the corner for an early try, making the score 5-0. The good times continued from there as Paris spent the entire half in the St. John’s end, with a penalty setting up Nicole Adegbite’s powerful run for another try, ending the half 10-0.

S P O RT S The second half saw Paris continue their excellent play, controlling the ball for most of the time and putting waves of pressure on the Eagles defence. Lailah Wade capitalized on a great counter ruck and opened the second half scoring, increasing the lead to 15-0. Heidi Groh joined in on the fun, squeezing through the defensive line for the last try of the game. A Harper North convert capped the final score at 22-0 for PDHS. It was an excellent team effort. Player of the game goes to Grace Aulsebrook-Smith, and the team sends get well soon wishes to her.

Fresh off that win, Paris faced BCI in the finals on Wednesday. The odds were stacked against Paris and BCI claimed the title for 12th consecutive year. Maggie Beaudin was Paris’ lone try scorer of the game. Paris finished the regular season with a 5-3-1 record and ranked first for AA schools (BCI is ranked AAA).

“The strength of this time is their support of each other, and willingness to work and try,” said Coach Dave McLean. “Everyone is new the game, most of our starters are Grade 9 and 10, but they have been willing to work and commit to the team goals. They tackle low and hard - and give it their all each and every game.”

The coaches also acknowledged try scorers throughout the season: Maggie Beaudin, Hailey Holgate, Serena Gambacort, Danya McLean, Ariel Saulnier, Nicole Adegbite, Lailah Wade and Heidi Groh. Convert efforts came from Harper North and Hailey Holgate.

COMMUNITY NEWS Crafty Gals & Friends bring monthly vendor shows to Ben-Mar, starting May 28th

By Casandra Turnbull Two crafty ladies are taking some extraordinary talents and offering a unique twist on a reoccurring vendor’s market this summer.

Alexis Bennett-Wheeler and Carrie Anderson are the two women and the driving force behind Crafty Gals & Friends Vendor Show, which will be setting up shop once a month at Ben Mar Family Fun Centre between May and September.

The duo is thinking outside the

box to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for shoppers looking to support local home-based businesses and artistically talented folks in this community, while raising money for worthy causes.

“I’ve always been an organizer of events. I’ve done fundraisers, that is my forte,” said BennettWheeler in a chat with The Paris Independent.

The idea started out simple; Ten vendors looking to display their products and showcase their talents. It’s since grown into 25-

30 vendors coming together once a month all summer to raise money for various charities. The first show in May will raise money and awareness for Friends 4 Kindness and for Cystic Fibrosis (May is Cystic Fibrosis awareness month).

“We are determined to keep our shows one-of-a-kind, featuring a fundraising component with crafters and vendors,” she explained.

COMMUNITY NEWS Friends 4 Kindness is a local non-profit group that specializes in spreading kindness to individuals who feel as if they don’t matter. F4K believes that everyone should feel included, accepted and loved. Funds raised for this group help to offset costs of hosting community events, primarily ‘unbirthday parties’ each summer for individuals who don’t normally ‘get an invite,’ or send an invite but no one shows up to their party. The next unbirthday party takes place on July 9th at Mohawk Park in Brantford.

Proceeds from Crafty Gals events will also go to Hope Jennions, a local 7-year-old girl living with Cystic Fibrosis. Donations help Hope’s family cover expensive monthly medications.

So, if you’re looking to support local in more ways than one, the first show is scheduled for May 28.

Each show will offer an array of crafter tables featuring everything from crochet and woodwork to home made soaps, quilts and glassware. You can also visit several home-based business owners

offering Tupperware, Scentsy, Norwex, leggings, etc. There is no admission fee, however, any donations will support the two causes.

It’s not too late to join the Crafty Gals & Friends vendor show. They are still looking for buskers willing to provide free face painting or entertainment for the kids while adults shop.

Anyone interested in volunteering or joining as a vendor is encouraged to contact Alexis at 519-7164732.

If all goes well, organizers hope to continue the shows into the fall/winter and are currently looking for a location to host those events.

Locals lace up for Jane’s Walk in Paris Walkers were out in full force last weekend taking part in different Jane’s Walks planned throughout Paris and Brant County/Brantford. Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. The global Jane’s Walk Festival takes places in hundreds of cities around the world every year on the first weekend in May. There was a total of 16 walks with more than 170 participants in this area. This activity allowed students to share positive and uplifting words and images for members of the school community to read. NURSES PROVIDING VITAL CARE IN PARIS FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS Photos Courtesy: The Paris Museum & Historical Society

Paris Past By Chris Whelan Nursing at the Willett Hospital On July 1, 1922, more than 1,400 townsfolk gathered proudly for the official opening of their new hospital.

Ontario Lieutenant Governor Henry Above: Nurses’ Residence constructed in honour of Miss Anna E. Arthur in 1955 and was demolished in 1992 to make way for the new Cockshutt, did the honours, Ambulance Station located at the southwest corner of the property. congratulating all involved and declaring: “Hospitals are essential for the sick and suffering.” The 18-bed hospital had three nurses who worked 12 shifts, a janitor and a cook. Doctors came and went as required by their patients. By 1926, the hospital had 24 beds and a staff of 11. In 1937 the first major expansion increased bed capacity to 37 and in 1952 22 more beds would be added. With more beds came the need for more nurses and in 1955 a nurse's residence was built at the southeast corner of the property under the guidance of Miss Anna E. Arthur superintendent of the Willet from 1922 to 1961. When Miss Arthur came to the Willett, she had one stipulation “That there be no nurses training school.” She deemed it would be unfair to the student, where training facilities would be limited and burdensome for doctors and nurses. Her advice was accepted. The Department of Health agreed, and this became the policy throughout the Province for small hospitals. The employment of only fully qualified nurses continued to be the policy for more than twenty-five years, when nursing assistants were first added to staff and became a valuable part of the team.

T R AV E L Malta first impressions: Full of ancient history yet very vibrant and modern Travelling to Malta from Rome was simple and quick. Fiumicino Airport in Rome was easy to navigate even for a “first timer” like me. But Sarah had already been, so it was a breeze. The flight is about an hour and twenty minutes to Malta.

Sarah’s friend Sandra was at the airport to pick us up, so getting to the apartment was also quick. The apartment is wonderful, if a little hi-tech for an old girl like me. I needed a course on how to work the coffee machine!

After settling in a bit, we walked down to Green’s Grocery. And yes, I mean down…. which in the reverse means back up! Hills are a theme wherever you go it seems, whether in Rome or here. Sandra had provided a few essentials for us, but there were a few other items that we needed.

Almost all buildings here are pale yellow or creamy white in color.

This makes travelling by landmark a bit disorienting. My first time out alone, I did make a wrong turn, but google maps came to the rescue and I found my way. After a couple times I was able to go on my own.

On our first full day here, Sarah started my orientation on Malta’s bus system. Bus routes are accessible through Malta’s

Using the Journey Planner on the site, you put in your start and end points and it will give you a selection of buses, and times, available to get you there. We set off on Bus 16 to Sliema (Sleema).

While Malta has a very ancient history, the towns are very vibrant and modern. The roadways however are a bit of a different situation. Almost all construction in Malta is done with Maltese stone, which is a

pale yellow. Some of these buildings have been in existence for hundreds of years and there is only so much space between them. As a result, the streets are very narrow, with many one-way streets connected by traffic circles. Oh and….they drive on the opposite side of the road to us in Canada. There are more modern highways, and express buses will use them but they aren’t usually the buses we take.

T R AV E L It is not unusual to see a full-sized bus on a two-way road, with parked cars on both sides, pass an oncoming cement truck! Everyone goes slow or stops for the bus to go through, or in some cases, will back up for the bus to get through.

The mall here, called The Point, is a multilevel building but going down. You Start at floor 0 and go down to -2. Prices here are in Euros. Currently, €1 equals about $1.35 Canadian.

On Monday, we went off to the Hypogeum. Only 10 people at a time are allowed on the tour so it is highly recommended that you prebook. Hypogeum is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Hypogeum is a complex made up of interconnecting rock-cut chambers set on three distinct levels. The complex was used over a span of many centuries, with the earliest remains dating back to about 4000 BC and the more recent remains found dating to 1500 BC. The site was found accidentally when a new home was being built in the street above. Workers broke through the ceiling of the Hypogeum while installing a water cistern.

While I would expect such a significant historical site to have an elaborate facade, there is a simple entrance on a side street in the middle of town. As Sarah put it, “kind of like going into someone’s basement”. There are no phones, bags or cameras allowed into the site, so all personal items are placed in locked lockers prior to entry. T R AV E L Buses take people everywhere and offer great views of the surrounding area. Masking was still required in stores and buses when we arrived, but these measures have now been relaxed. I still mask up when going on the bus or into busy shopping areas. Places such as pharmacies still require a mask. While I have had 4 doses of vaccine, I don’t want to get sick here, so I’ll continue to mask and sanitize.

language. A guide accompanies you throughout the tour which takes about an hour.

Worth mentioning are the cats. Yes cats. They are outside everywhere in Malta, and where better to be a stray cat than here. The weather seems perfect and at the docks fish scraps are abundant. It is estimated that there are about 3,000 stray/feral cats between Gozo and Malta, with about 1,000 people designated as caregivers. On my walk to the grocery store, I have encountered 3 or 4 regulars: the dirty orange one, the bigger soft orange one, the vocal calico one and the solid black one. It is not unusual to see plastic cups full of fresh water and piles of cat kibble lining the streets where I walk. I have to admit to buying some treats last time at the store and sharing them with the bunch!

Hypogeum, which literally means “under ground”, was a burial chamber and as the guide explained, bodies were left to decompose in one area and then the bones transferred to another room. Bones were often found in piles. It is fascinating to see this place knowing that it was created with simple tools and an understanding of the stone they had to work with.

While some areas are a bit rough, others are more refined with smooth, squared stones. The guide explained that this would be two different kinds of stone.

On Wednesday we headed over to Gozo. This is the second largest of the Maltese islands.

It was a lot to take in during one visit and I look forward to going again.

Gozo is one of 21 islands that make up the Maltese archipelago. Inhabited for thousands of years, it shows evidence of historic rule by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Sicilians, French and British, among others. It’s known for its Neolithic Ġgantija Temple ruins, rural hiking paths, beaches and scuba-diving sites.

It is about 14 km long by 7 km wide and has a population of about 33,000.

T R AV E L Mgarr, Gozo takes about 25 minutes and leaves Malta about every hour, returning from Gozo every 45 minutes. From the ferry dock it’s a quick bus ride into Victoria, the capital of Gozo. We didn’t want to rush our visit so planned to stay overnight. We booked a very nice Boutique hotel called Casa Gemelli located on the main street. The hotel only has 19 rooms.

The hotel is a labour of love for the proprietors. Gemelli means twins in Italian and true to that, the hotel is owned by identical twin sisters, Anna and Sonia. This is their third venture into offering accommodations on Gozo and is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms were beautiful, and while in a converted 19th century townhouse, the hotel is modern and comfortable. Breakfast in the morning is included and the smell of bacon and eggs started early.

After checking in and dropping off our bags we headed off for some exploring. While taking the bus everywhere is inexpensive and accessible, it can be time consuming. We accidentally got on the bus going in the wrong direction and had a great tour of the little island. After some discussion with the driver, we were dropped at the door of the temple we were going to visit.

The Ġgantija (Giant or Giantess) Temple is a megalithic temple

complex from the Neolithic era.

These are the earliest of the Megalithic Temples of Malta and are older than the pyramids of Egypt. There are two temples built here, with the older one (3600 BC) being the largest and most well preserved. The building of these temples is a remarkable feat when considering the monuments were constructed when the wheel had not yet been introduced and no metal tools were available to the Maltese Islanders. The tallest part measures just over 19 feet high.

Ggantija is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Our tour was self guided and we spent time reading the many plaques and viewing the short introductory video. This site was a favourite of the sailors and Victorian era tourists and much damage was done to it before it fell into ruin. Still visible etched into the soft stone are that era’s graffiti. Basically “so and so was here”. In the early 1800s the site was cleared of “rubble” without being properly researched.

There has been major restoration work done to it in the 2000s, so it is now an impressive monument.

Exploring these prehistoric temples is fascinating. I will definitely return when my company from England and Canada comes.

The Ġgantija (Giant or Giantess) Temple

Friday night we were treated to a trip to Mdina for a walk and a wonderful dinner out with friends. Mdina is definitely on my list of return spots. It is a completely walled city, surrounded by a moat. Of course, the “moat” no longer contains water but what it must have looked like is definitely unmistakable. The city was founded in the 8th century BC and remained the capital of Malta until the 1500s.

There are currently about 300 people still living inside the walls, but it has been incorporated into the surrounding community of Rabat (11,000).

I was sad to see my daughter off early Sunday morning, but I look forward to doing some solo exploration before my trip to England.

COMMUNITY NEWS NDP Leader Andrea Horwath makes stop in Paris NDP leader Andrea Horwath made a campaign stop in Paris on Thursday morning, dropping by the DogEared Café to unveil plans for her party’s universal mental health plan.

Horwath was joined by Harvey Bischoff, the NDP candidate for Brantford-Brant, and several local residents If elected on June 2, the NDP say Ontarians can access counselling and therapy through OHIP. “Mental health care is health care, and you shouldn’t have to pay

$200 every time you need it,” Horwath told media inside the cafe.

“We’re going to fix it. With my plan, you’re going to be able to see a counsellor or therapist when you need to, with no cost, just like going to your family doctor.” View the complete announcement above.

Thousands gather for Friday the 13th in Dover Tens of thousands of bikers and visitors gathered in Port Dover for the only Friday the 13th this year. The event started in 1981 and has grown into an annual tradition.

The event is a welcome sight for local businesses recovering from financial hardships brought on by the pandemic.
