Don’t be shy about bringing your kids to your favorite event. The variety of special events in the mountains is staggering. It seems like every town in the Colorado High Country has created, recruited and refined the art of live entertainment and special events. Many world class summer events take place almost every weekend from mid-June until the end of October. Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, The Vail International Dance Festival, Vail Jazz Festival, Culinary demonstrations, just to name a few. Many of these events have evolved over the years to include family-friendly activities. In doing so, the event organizers have reached out to parents, grandparents and children and encouraged them to listen, participate, enjoy and grow with them. Hats off to these organizers! Many other events are focused specifically on the family and I encourage you to visit them this summer and fall. Farmers Markets, Rodeo’s, Free music, Air shows, Home Tours, and sporting events. Take a look at the family calendar of events and be sure to take your family to a local event or two. You’ll be glad you did! Sincerely,

With three outstanding music and dance festivals in town, the Vail Valley is the perfect place to introduce young ones to arts and culture.

arts Courtesy Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival

Exposing children to the by L.S. Burns For its fairly small size, both in square miles and population, Eagle County has a tremendous amount of culture going on, especially in the summertime when three outstanding festivals come to town. First up, Vail Jazz Foundation events start June 24 and culminates with the Labor Day Weekend Vail Jazz Party Aug. 30 – Sept. 3; Bravo is set for June 25 – Aug. 4; and the Vail International Dance Festival runs from July 29 – Aug. 11. That means there are plenty of options available for parents and grandparents who want to expose children and teenagers to arts and culture. Why is important to pass along a love for the arts, specifically music and dance, to the younger generation? “The arts are the key to creativity, they are an invaluable tool in education, and in making well rounded citizens,” says Damian Woetzel, the artistic director of the Vail International Dance Festival. “When a child draws, or writes

a poem or story, or composes a short song, they are taking control and making decisions, they are exercising their individual ability to create, think, and to be inspired.” Too often, Woetzel says, children are “focused solely on learning by memory, and learning through the arts is an invaluable addition to the classroom. “We also know from research that children exposed to the arts in childhood tend strongly to remain continued page 36

8lbs of Pressure By: Kim Blackford

For those that believe in the added pressure of a New Year’s Resolution, I too adopted one for 2012: Learn New Things. So far I’ve learned that a coffee barista uses 8lbs of pressure on the tamper to make my morning latte, that it takes me exactly 11 minutes to fully wake-up in the morning, and that the “high altitude” instructions actually matter. Why does my gym membership do the exact opposite of its intended purpose? What items can I really recycle? Who invented pantyhose?

Colorado Mountain College: Edwards

All jokes aside, I do ask myself what I can do to learn new things that will enhance my resume, boost my credibility, and stay on current trends. I have found that learning new things online has been the format that works for me. The busy life of a woman is often dictated by one hour increments and alone time often only results from a 15 minute shower. Online classes fit my schedule because I can decide how and when I learn. With online classes that are rolled out weekly, I have a whole week to get in my “learn new things” time. I do it from my computer at home which is sometimes accompanied by a glass of red wine and my slippers. But I also find myself at The Bookworm sipping my 8lbs of pressure, non-fat, caramel latte, because I just need an internet connection. If I’d rather give my mind a rest to find out who won American Idol, if a woman won Survivor, or to sing Carole King songs while doing laundry (don’t judge!), I can just come back to my lesson online a little later. I have since learned how to post to a group on LinkedIn, find the short URL for a YouTube video, invite my friends to the CMC Facebook page and that it was a man who invented pantyhose.

You love to visit here: Stay and learn here! The Vail Valley is not only a great place to be, it’s a great place to get an education. Our location in Edwards offers associates and bachelor’s degrees, career programs and non-credit classes in unique programs ranging from the culinary arts to emergency medicine. We’re an ideal place to learn for a weekend, a semester - or a lifetime.

childhood tend strongly to remain interested in artistic activities throughout their lives, so it is essential that we ensure that children have the arts in their world from an early age,” Woetzel added. But while it’s important to expose young children to the arts, at times, it can be very challenging for a small person to sit through a full orchestral Bach concert, for instance, or to watch New York City Ballet MOVES dancers perform for a few hours, which is why Woetzel recommends the child be old enough to focus on the program and understand a bit about what’s happening. “It helps if they know what they are seeing and have an interest already,” Woetzel said. “For example, The Nutcracker is a traditional way to introduce children to the ballet, and it has been interesting to see that the ages have decreased at which little kids can sit through the performance, which I think it is directly related to the videos of The Nutcracker now available which make it possible for children to be familiar with the work and thus more attentive and interested. So, preparing children for what they are going to see is essential, and with all of the tools of our age it is possible to do so like never before.”

Decent, affordable housing creates stability, launching families into a promising cycle of progress, possibility, better health and further education instilling hope for a brighter future. Throughout Habitat for Humanity’s history of creating better housing solutions, it has seen countless changes in the lives of the partner families. Children once distracted and unfocused gain the stability and confidence to excel in school. Family members focus on the future creating positive changes in health such as quitting smoking and lowering their cholesterol. The research is clear: safe, affordable housing positively impacts the health and education of the family by offering warmth in the winter, dryness when it rains, structural safety and emotional reassurance of a place to call home. Every parent loves the thought of tucking their children into a warm bed at night knowing that their family is safe and well fed. Not everyone knows what that feels like, even in this beautiful valley. It is estimated that 4,700 local families earn between 25 and 60 percent of area median to income, which is the target range for Habitat, making it difficult for these families to find decent housing. Partner families are selected based on their need for adequate shelter, their ability to pay for the home and their willingness to partner with Habitat. Families are required to pay a down payment and a monthly mortgage payment as well

as investing hundreds of “sweat equity” hours into the construction of their home. Habitat for Humanity of Eagle & Lake Counties has built 35 simple, decent, energy efficient homes in partnership with local working families housing 35 families including more than 100 children. Habitat for Humanity relies on cash donations, volunteer labor and donated construction materials to build affordable homes. It also operates the Habitat ReStore, which accepts donations of furniture, appliances and building materials and sells them at a discount to the community. The proceeds from the ReStore go toward the mission of building more homes. Through the generosity of our community, Habitat has increased its impact and has plans to build 6 homes this year, a record for this affiliate. However, there are many more deserving families in Eagle & Lake Counties that qualify. Everyone deserves a decent place to call home. Please join Habitat for Humanity in providing stability, opportunity and hope to hardworking local families. Visit www.habitatvailvalley.org or call (970) 748.6718 for more information.

High Altitude Health

By Dr. Douglas V. Mayeda

The mountains of Colorado are among the most beautiful parts of the United States. However, some of the very features that make this area Dr. Douglas V. Mayeda so attractive also present a specific set of challenges to non-acclimated visitors. The most important thing you can do is to understand these challenges, their symptoms, and what you can do to circumvent them.

Altitude Illness As you ascend to higher altitudes, atmospheric pressure decreases, the air is thinner and less oxygen is available. It is also colder, drier and the ultraviolet rays from the sun are stronger. Above 8000 feet, altitude illness affects 20 to 30% of visitors from lower altitude to some degree. The extent to which visitors are affected depends on how quickly they ascend, what elevation they attain, how hard they exercise, as well as factors in their own body composition that are out of their control. After arriving at high altitude,

people often notice that their breathing is faster and/or deeper, and they may feel short of breath especially when exercising. In addition, the heart is likely to beat faster at higher altitudes. This is the body’s first and most effective response to higher elevation. Feel free to contact Dr. Douglas V. Mayeda at Alpine Mobile Physicians with any medical questions, (970) 376-8376.

If you thought it was impossible to entertain your entire family without some kind of video screen, then you’ve never been to a Vaudeville Show, where young and old alike have been thoroughly entertained for over 100 years. Vaudeville was popular in the United States and Canada from the early 1880’s until the early 1930’s. The shows where specifically designed to entertain audiences of all ages. Each performance was made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts including dancers, comedians, trained animal acts, magicians, illustrated songs, jugglers and basically anything that entertains. There were many popular movie stars like Mae West, W.C. Fields, Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers who got their start on the Vaudeville Circuit traveling around the country performing in beautiful live theatres. Modern Vaudeville is still based on the original concept with a combination of entertaining acts that include more current parodies and themes using a local troupe of multi-talented professional entertainers. The Glenwood Vaudeville Revue takes this concept to another whole level with a focus on comedy using rapid fire jokes and running gags, coupled with creative visual surprises, quality musical numbers and original audience participation pieces that has the audience feeling like they are actually part of the show. Classic Vaudeville characters will be per-

These shows have a way of captivating audiences of all ages allowing families of many generations to enjoy a night out together knowing all will be thoroughly entertained. Movies

Movie buffs can get their film fix in Eagle County this summer

Movies are magical. Every parent knows this bit of wisdom. A very special movie can stop a small child’s tears mid-sniffle. In Gypsum, the town hosts People’s Friday, a combination of free music and movies at Lundgren Theater and Town Hall Park, over the course of the summer. Concerts, face painting, kids’v crafts and a bounce house begin at 7 p.m., so little ones can run themselves a bit wild before settling down for the feature film of the evening, which starts at dusk. The lineup this year includes Ink Heart and the band Instant Cash on June 8; Flight of the Navigator and the band Already Gone on June 15; June Moody and The Not So Bummer Summer and folk musician Jayme Stone on June 22. June 29, there’s a special Porch Light Players Children’s Theater performance at 6:30 p.m., bluegrass musician Kort McCumber at 7:30 p.m. and the film Captain America. On July 6, the Motown band Soul School performs followed by the classic ‘80s flick, Back to the Future, and on July 19, the movie is slated to be Courageous. Movies and music take place at Gypsum Creek Golf Course on Saturdays (June 16, July 7, Aug. 4 and 18.)

A market for everyone From Eagle to Vail and in between, summer Farmer’s Markets are bountiful in Eagle County by L.S. Burns Each weekend, farmers from across the state flock to Eagle County to sell whatever produce is ripe that week at our local farmer’s markets. The summer starts off slow and steady with early crops, like rhubarb and romaine lettuce in June; next come the apricots, beets and broccoli in early July; but the real summer gems –peaches, sweet corn and tomatoes– that local chefs and market regulars eagerly anticipate, show up around mid-July.

94

The Vail Farmer’s Market and Art Show, which takes place Sundays from June 17-Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., has a tremendous variety of vendors and is the largest market in the county as well as the state. Along with produce, shoppers will find plenty of local painters, photographers, jewelry makers and more continued on page 98

The market runs from June 23-Sept. 8 and includes children’s face painting, a bouncy castle, live music and more than 115 market booths. Visit minturnmarket.org. If you’re one of those folks who scouts vegetables and other local foods like a bee to fragrant flowers, then the Edwards Farmers’ Market, which takes place Saturdays from June 16 through mid September, is the market for you. The focus at this market is on all things edible. Along with vendors selling Colorado lamb, beef, pork, chicken, eggs, honey and cheese, local bakeries sell freshly baked breads, pastries and pies. There’s plenty of breakfast and lunch fare (the market goes from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) as well,

including crepes, gyros, tamales and more. Pets are welcome and parking is on site. Visit www.edwardsfarmersmarket.com. The Shaolin Warriors are experts at Kung Fu Martial Arts. They suspend themselves in the air on the tips of 5 hand held spears, crush 6 wooden poles with one strike, twist 8 ft long metal poles with their bodies and move through 48 steel blades rotating within a metal ring of fire. Equally impressive are the Riders of the Wind, who are Equestrian acrobat riders. While riding their thoroughbreds, they perform a double-man pyramid and then build the pyramid

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s Circus begins their run of 16 shows on Sept. 27

to 5 men high - while still riding! Most adults remember the big cats at the Circus and this is no exception. The big cat trainer Alexander Lacey will be making his first appearance in the USA and perform with ferocious Lions and Tigers. The Hair Hanging Heroines are suspended 35 feet in the air - that’s right - just by their hair; while The Flying Caceres show off on their double decker high trapeze and the undertaking of the full twisting double bar to bar somersault! Of course you cannot miss the eight members of The Torres family riding motorcycles inside the Globe of Steel; animals like Asian Elephants, horses, ponies and rescue dogs; The Russian Bar Renegades and Teeterboard Titanstwo amazing acrobatic troupes who try to “outdo” each other; and finally the Double Motorcycle high wire! Experiencing the working relationships of humans and animals is fascinating and exciting. This action packed family adventure will thrill anyone who thinks that they have seen it all. Out for a ride in Eagle

WHEREVER YOU ARE

by Laura Turitz, Mountain Bike Eagle

YOU’RE CONNECTED TO VAIL.

Weather in the high country is warming up, kids are out of school, and the urge to get outside is intensifying – it’s biking season! As you’re dusting off the kids’ helmets and inflating tires, put Eagle at the top of your list of places to take the family for a ride. Eagle features loads of trail and terrain options, and it’s all family friendly and easy to access. The entire town of Eagle is connected by a well maintained and safe network of paved and dirt bike paths that stretch from downtown all the way to the pool and ice skating rink. Park the car for the day, and enjoy riding your way to play tennis, take a swim, have lunch, and relax with ice cream at the park.

Take it easy For a leisurely experience, the Eagle Ranch Loops are just what you need. Enjoy less technical trails, easy access, and mild elevation gains. This is the perfect spot for families with young kids looking for a fun day out.

Tricks, twists, and jumps Add some variety to your plans and check out Eagle’s impressive BMX track. They feature races throughout the summer for riders of all skill levels and ages. It’s free and fun to just hang out and watch the pros.

Get competitive The Vail Recreation District’s Mountain Bike Race Series hosts two races in Eagle each season, and each race offers child and expert divisions. And, the Eagle County Fairgrounds holds the Mountain Bike Short Track Series each April to kick off the season. Get the whole family signed up, and win!
