The thin-aired trek across frozen peaks… I touch this stone this Andean shard of basaltic black, and this single little red shoe, and my thoughts turn to the snow, to the shattered wreckage, to the hunger… and the bitter cold, and to the sacrifices our loved ones had never asked to make…
