“THE MOST CLOSELY GUARDED DOMESTIC SECRET OF THE REAGAN WHITE HOUSE.” According to President Ronald Reagan’s own White House Chief of Staff, Donald T. Regan (no blood relation to the Reagans), it was:
“The most closely guarded domestic secret of the Reagan White House.”
In his official 1988 book release, titled “For The Record: From Wall Street to Washington,” the erstwhile Presidential White House Chief of Staff, further wrote of a most shocking revelation:
“Virtually every major move and decision the Reagans made during my time as White House Chief of Staff was cleared in advance with a woman in San Francisco who drew up horoscopes to make certain that the planets were in favorable align-
ment for the enterprise.”
(“For The Record: From Wall Street to Washington,” 1988 book by Presidential Chief of Staff, Donald T. Regan. Publisher, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.)
In this exclusive report to The Paper, we shall revisit those years to see what actually happened and why so much was “covered up” and how much (still remains) hugely unknown to most living Americans
today – over four decades after the fact.
PRESIDENT & MRS. REAGAN KEPT “OCCULT SECRET” AMID FEARS OF DISCLOSURE. During the two terms of his presidency (1981-1989), U. S. President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy nurtured a secret interest at the White House in consulting astrology and their respective horoscopes (he was under the zodiac sign of Aquarius and she was Cancer) which influ-

enced much of their political decision making and activities, which they both kept under wraps for fear of embarrassment.
And their carefully-nursed secret almost made it through their entire two terms of office on Capitol Hill.
Almost.
Almost, that is, until the president’s own personal Chief of Staff, Donald T. Regan, officially let the cat out of the bag in 1988.
REAGAN AT PRESS CONFERENCES: “I HAVE NEVER MADE AN IMPORTANT POLICY DECISION BASED ON ASTROLOGICAL BELIEFS!” And when the jinn was finally released from the bottle, all hell broke loose on Capitol Hill in the form of ridicule, acrimonious accusations, and deprecating humour, all at the Reagan’s expense, despite the president’s official and repeated comments at various press conferences:
“I have never made an important policy decision based on astrological beliefs.”
Official White House spokesperson, Marlin Fitzwater, announced that the: “Reagans were greatly distressed at the disclosures concerning their interest in astrol-

ogy.”
Fitzwater was further quoted as stating: “They both feel it’s unfortunate and a distraction and hardly relevant to the business of government.”
(Source: The New York Times, 4 May 1988.)
BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: REAGAN STRATEGISTS SCRAMBLED FOR POLITCAL “DAMAGE CONTROL.” The toxic fallout from President Reagan’s own erstwhile and personal chief of staff disclosing that the President and First Lady consulted the stars before making political decisions severely embarrassed and humiliated both Mr. and Mrs. Reagan on the world stage.
In meetings conducted behind closed doors, most Reagan strategists voiced concerns that the disclosures would reveal a “serious character trait” in the President and his wife.
Additionally, this “serious character trait” of harbouring a deep, serious, lifelong interest in the supernatural was further compounded by the fact that both the U. S. President and First Lady conspired to cover-up, hide, and carefully guard their secret, which had remained “largely hidden to the public.”
(Source: The Washington Post, 1988.)
ENCE FOREIGN POLICIES & ENDANGER NATIONAL SECURITY FOR ALL AMERICANS? Serious allegations that the lives and safety and best interests of all Americans may have been wrongly and dangerously placed in supernatural beliefs was of utmost concern in subsequent White House press conferences.
President Reagan’s former White House Director of Political Affairs (1981-1982), Franklyn “Lyn” Nofziger, didn’t help the situation when he blurted to the press:
“If he’s been consulting astrologers, he’s been getting some bum advice. Who told him to make the (arms-for-hostages) deal with the Iranians?”
DID THE REAGANS ALLOW ASTROLOGY TO WRONGFULLY INFLUENCE THEIR POLICIES? On Capitol Hill, Representative Tony Coelho, the Democratic whip, expressed total amazement at Republican objections to a revised trade bill, since the bill was totally revised to fit and please Republican objections: “Maybe an astrologer is telling him (and them) to object today,” a frustrated Coelho told the press.
THE WHITE HOUSE “WALKS BACK” EARLIER REMARKS IN “BOMB SHELL” REVELATIONS! A special U. S. press conference was called.
On Tuesday 3 May 1988 at just past 12:30 p.m., Eastern Standard
Time, Marlin Fitzwater, President Reagan’s personal White House spokesperson, approached the press conference microphone and -- with tongue-in-cheek --made reference in timing such events according to astrological charts:
“I’ll take your first question at exactly 12:33 and a half.”
The gloves were off and Fitzwater made clear that astrology was more than just a passing pastime for the President and Mrs. Reagan.
“President Reagan and First Lady Nancy are both deeply interested in astrology.”
The assemblage full of national and world news media immediately erupted in animated questions.
“Is it true that (both) President and Mrs. Reagan have had a long interest in astrology over the years as reported in TIME magazine and Newsweek?” asked one reporter.
Fitzwater replied: “It’s true that both have had a strong interest over the years. Mrs. Reagan’s interest in astrology intensified, particularly following the assassination attempt in March of 1981.”
“So is it true, after all, contrary to President Reagan’s remarks, that astrology has, in fact, influenced much of the Presidents schedule? Such as exact timing and particu-

lar days in planning important presidential meetings, appointments, and even Air Force One departure times?”
Fitzwater went on to confirm that it was true, especially – and again reiterating – that the assassination attempt on President Reagan’s life had intensified Mrs. Reagan’s concerns. But that such astrological influences were greatly confined only to low-level social activities for the U. S. president.
The disclosures made in the released book “For The Record: From Wall Street to the White House,” by President Reagan’s former Presidential Chief of Staff, Donald T. Regan, forced White House spokesperson, Marlin Fitzwater, to own up to (much) of what had been (well documented) in the book.
Although much of what Donald T. Regan alleged in his controversial book was greatly inflated, there also were elements of truth.
A HIDDEN AGENDA & AN AXE TO GRIND. Although there is some shocking (half-truths) in his words, Donald T. Regan also had an axe to grind when he was ousted as Presidential Chief of Staff amid the Iran-Contra scandal, mostly from his own inadequacies and falling upon his own sword, so say many political pundits.
Donald Regan was not about to go quietly into the night.
It is well documented (even in Nancy Reagan’s own published memoirs and media interviews) that bad blood existed between First Lady Nancy Reagan and the former Chief of Staff.
According to White House records and respective books and media interviews by both parties, Chief of Staff Donald Regan and the First Lady took an instant dislike to one another.
Long before he was ousted as Presidential Chief of Staff, Donald Regan’s patience quickly peeled back like an onion after seething in anger at – what he felt was -- catering to First Lady Nancy Reagan’s every astrological whim and request in adjusting President Reagan’s daily, weekly, and monthly schedules.
“I’m NOT the Chief of Staff of the First Lady!” he finally railed after getting what he felt was one too many of her phone calls regarding her astrological beliefs which influenced her advisement on the president’s various scheduling, ap-
pointment times, press conference times, and even the exact Air Force One departure times.
Donald Regan kept a colour-coded calendar on his desk, with “good” days highlighted in green and “bad” days highlighted in red.
Along with the colour codes were comments according to Nancy Reagan’s astrological input.
Herewith, is a rare and exclusive look at one of the calendars as it (actually) appeared, verbatim, during the first few months of 1986 on the White House Chief of Staff’s desk:
Jan 16–23. Very bad.
Jan 20. Nothing outside the White House -- possible attempt (assassination).
Feb 20–26. Be careful.
March 7–14. Bad period.
March 10–14. No outside activity.
March 16. Very bad.
March 21. No.
March 27. No.
March 12–19. No trips exposure.
March 19–25. No public exposure.
April 1. Be careful.
April 11. Careful.
April 17. Careful.
April 21–28. Stay home.
That the President and First Lady were deeply superstitious, and endeavored to keep the (full extent) of their astrological consultations secret in making decisions is well documented.
At the White House, after the 1981 assassination attempt on his life, only 70 days into his first term of office, Nancy Reagan made known to her husband that she was going to secretly consult an astrologer for future guidance and in planning his presidential activities.
President Reagan fully understood her concerns and agreed to enter their secret pact together, saying at the time with great caution:
“If it makes you feel better, go ahead and do it. Just be careful because if it ever gets out, it will look odd.”

Barricaded Carjacking Suspect
On April 20th, at 11:56 a.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was notified about a female adult suspect who had fled the area in a rideshare after committing felony vandalism against a vehicle at the 6000 block of Paseo Del Norte.
Officers located the rideshare vehicle with the suspect inside and initiated a stop on the vehicle. When officers approached the vehicle, the suspect produced and brandished a large knife and made life-threatening statements. The rideshare driver was safely rescued from the vehicle. After a short pursuit, the vehicle was disabled on the northbound I-5 freeway. The suspect refused to exit or comply with officers’ directions.
Based on this information, the Carlsbad Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team and Crisis Negotiations Team responded and established communication with her. After approximately ninety minutes of negotiations and de-escalation techniques, she peacefully surrendered. The female was taken into custody and booked into Vista Detention Facility for an outstanding felony warrant from a prior incident, felony vandalism,
brandishing a knife, assault with a deadly weapon, carjacking, resisting arrest, and felony evading. A knife was recovered at the scene.
Officers identified the female suspect as 39-year-old Darneisha Hill from San Diego, California.

National CORE Rebuilds 85 Homes in San Marcos
National CORE, the City of San Marcos, the County of San Diego and their partners have completed reconstruction of 85 apartment homes at the Villa Serena affordable housing community that offer new amenities and one of the nation’s highest levels of energyefficient design.
The reconstruction, celebrated with a grand opening on April 20, represents the first of two phases that will replace 136 apartments with 148 state-of-the-art homes through a partnership between local government and National CORE to improve the quality of living in the Richmar neighborhood.
He dropped me off at noon and I was exhausted! Trying to keep up with Arie as he made his morning rounds was quite a challenge.
He had a talent for spotting and hiring talented people. I suspect that’s how he was so successful in putting together successful business projects.
“Villa Serena’s transformation represents more than 20 years of planning and preparing. National CORE is honored to be part of the collaborative efforts to bring new resources to the community – ultimately making Richmar a better place to raise a family,” National CORE President Michael Ruane said.
In 1997, National CORE acquired the 1970s era Lido-Imperial apartment complex – now one of five developments it has created in San Marcos and four in the Richmar neighborhood. Immediate changes boosted community safety while National CORE built a partnership to fund reconstruction.
Richmar has experienced a revival since the opening of the National CORE’s Paseo del Oro housing complex in 2004 along with city efforts to increase walkability, according to local media. The San Diego Association of Governments reports that San Marcos now has some of the lowest crime rates in the county. San Marcos was ranked the 25th safest city in California, according to FBI crime statistics and the 2020 U.S. Census.
Man About Town
“It is what it is!”
Many of us have heard Arie De Jong utter those famous words dozens of times. Didn’t matter if the event referred to was a good situation . . . or a bad situation. He’d utter those words . . ‘It is what it is!” and then turn his attention to the next project.
Another project was always on Arie’s mind . . . more likely, 3 or 4 projects. His mind was always at work . . . and he was always on the go.
Twice Arie invited me to join him in his pickup to take a tour of his projects and properties ... every time he’d stop he’d always visit with someone, usually a staffer.
He had a great memory. I can’t tell you how many times Arie would point to a house and say, “I delivered milk to them.” That happened so often I came to believe that Arie delivered milk to every single resident of Escondido.
During the holidays our Kiwanis club would assist the Salvation Army’s fundraising by “ringing the bells” at various locations throughout Escondido, usually at a local grocery store. I always was first in line to volunteer to ring bells with Arie because I knew it woiuld be a fun mornng. “Hi! My bnae is Arie DeJong. What’s yours? Our family goes to church every Sunday, does yours? If not, you may want to try it. It’s a great source of comfort.”
During the last six months I had some serious health issues . . . Covid 19, an extremely painful bout with Shingles, and a heart attack. I could count on almost every Monday morning a phone call. “Lyle, this is Arie De Jong. I just wanted to call and see if you are
feeling any better.” Somehow, after Arie’s phone calls I did feel a bit better.
I could never figure out why this very successful man was so fond of me . . . a poor cowboy from the plains of Nebraska, but he was fond of me. And I of him . I was proud to call Arie De Jong a close personal friend.
He was a fine, fine man.
And if Arie were with us right now, (and he is, you know,) he’d say . . . “It is what it is!”
Dear Lyle Davis, we were very moved by your “Man About Town” column (April 13 issue) regarding your dear friend, Mr. Arie de Jong lying on his deathbed, in pain, and totally blind and yet so happy to hear that you and Pastor Huls came to visit him. I had tears in my eyes when you said his face lit up and he said: “Lyle Davis! How are you doing?! And Pastor Huls! Thanks for coming!”
Lyle, my wife broke down in tears when you said: “Arie knew he was dying, but here he was again, inquiring about my health.” That right there, summed up the man.
Then we read of his passing, in The Paper (April 20 issue) with his obituary telling his family history as immigrants from Holland. But Lyle, your “Man About Town” column hit closer to home with your words of how he would always call and check on you when you, yourself, were sick. That captures his humanity more vividly and tells more deeply how not even at death’s door, Mr. Arie de Jong never relinquished nor ever surrendered his power to love. That’s what God treasures most when he arrives at those Pearly Gates and awaits his reunion with family, and friends like you Lyle. It appears to me, you were his closest friend outside his family.
Lyle, my wife and kids spotted you at Charlie’s Restaurant in Escondido, on Tuesday April 11 two days after Easter Sunday. You were with a very pretty brunette (we assume it’s your daughter) so we didn’t wish to impose on you two having breakfast. You both seemed to be enjoying each other’s company and were laughing a lot. God bless you Lyle and your family. All your readers are aware of your past several months dealing with health issues yourself. From what we witnessed, you’re in good hands with a daughter (?) who seems to love you beyond words. God has richly

Reagan from page 3
The aforementioned secret discussion was made public exactly 3 months after the Reagans left the White House, per Nancy Reagan’s published memoirs.
(Source: “My Turn: The Memoirs of Nancy Reagan,” by Nancy Reagan. 20 January 1989. Random House, publisher.)
THE BEGINNING: RONALD & NANCY REAGAN’S LIFELONG JOURNEY WITH ASTROLOGY
To better understand it all, let’s journey back to a most shocking and colourful era which nurtured and shaped the Reagans along with the Hollywood elite during a different America, a different time, a different zeitgeist.
THE REAGANS TRAFFICKED & ASSOCIATED WITH THE OCCULT SINCE THEIR EARLY HOLLYWOOD YEARS. According to Dr. Marcello Truzzi, professor of sociology at Eastern Michigan University, in an article for The New York Times (4 May 1988) he has documented evidence over many years which chronicle the Reagans’ deep interest in astrology.
According to Professor Truzzi, the Reagans were both products of their environment.
“In Hollywood during the 30s and 40s, astrologers were social equals and friends, they weren’t weirdos,” says Truzzi.
“THE REAGANS WERE A PRODUCT OF THEIR TIME.” The timeline was perfect for astrologers during the heyday of Hollywood, especially during the time span from 1927 to 1959 which became known as “Hollywood’s Golden Age” with the miracle era of motion picture sound.
While the world fell in love, were awestruck, and held spellbound with Hollywood’s pantheon of immortal stars on the silver screen, so also were Hollywood’s galaxy of movie stars equally in awe of the most famous and well-known practitioners of the occult during that era.
Psychics, astrologers, clairvoyants, mediums and séances, were all the rage back then with such paranormal personages as Edgar Cayce (1877-1945), Carroll Righter (1900-1988), and Jeane Dixon (1904-1997) enjoying their own unique type of celebrity among the Hollywood movie stars of that era.
Famous California astrologer, Carroll Righter, was so celebrated among Hollywood’s greatest film legends that he even became known as “The Official Astrologer to the Hollywood Stars.”
In his own autobiography titled
“Where’s the Rest of Me?” President Ronald Reagan refers to Carroll Righter as, “One of our good friends” and recounts events which shaped his life.
(Source: “Where’s the Rest of Me?” written by Ronald Reagan. Publisher, Duell, Sloan & Pierce, 1 Jan 1965.)
When Carroll Righter was asked if he gave President Reagan any astrological guidance and advice, Mr. Righter simply replied: “No comment,” which for many insiders was affirmative.
When Carroll Righter died on 30 April 1988 at the age of 88, his office was decorated with many photos of both Ronald and Nancy Reagan.
THE REAGAN’S CLOSE ASTROLOGER-FRIEND REPORTEDLY PREDICTED JFK’S ASSASSINATION. Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s close personal friend and astrologer, Jeane Dixon, allegedly predicted JFK’s assassination.
Jeane Dixon rose to global fame based on her reported forecast that the winner of the 1960 presidential race would tragically and prematurely die in office, possibly by assassination.
Her startling prophecy can be found in an olde issue of Parade Magazine dated 13 May 1956, under the headline: “Incredible Crystal Gazer.”
Dixon’s forecast was as follows: “As for the 1960 election, Mrs. Dixon thinks it will be dominated by labor and won by a Democrat. But he will be assassinated or die in office ‘though not necessarily in his first term.’”
Unbeknownst to most of the public, Jeane Dixon would later embellish her original 1956 prediction (cited above) by adding details (many years after the fact), such as:
“A blue-eyed young man who had a shock of brown hair.”
And also adding narrative details such as that the ill-fated president had “made a decision to go some place in the South that will be fatal for him.”
Little is mentioned that Jeane Dixon was (hugely) more wrong than she was right on her numerous predictions, namely that the world would end in 2020 and countless other forecasts that fizzled miserably.
In making one too many bogus forecasts, one headline said, “Stars Go Blank for Dixon,” and her ca-

Fighting Back Against Sexually Violent Predators
I’m pleased to say that our last Board of Supervisors meeting, we unanimously passed a resolution to support Senate Bill, 832, which would prioritize public safety when placing Sexually Violent Predators.
I want to thank Senator Brian Jones for his leadership and authoring SB 832, which would demand transparency from the Department of State Hospitals and require them to consider their properties and state prison properties for placement. SB 832 would also prevent an SVP from being placed within 5 miles of federally recognized “Indian country." This is especially important for rural and Indian lands that may not have the level of police enforcement necessary to ensure the safety of their communities.
No community should have to live in fear of SVPs. These individuals are the worst of the worst, having been convicted of violent sex crimes and diagnosed with conditions that make them likely to reoffend. Too often, these predators are dumped into unsuspecting communities, causing fear and anxiety among residents.
The recent ruling that Sexually Violent Predator Douglas Badger will be placed in Borrego Springs makes this issue even more pressing. Badger has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and Sexual Sadism Disorder and has been convicted of several offenses, including child molestation and kidnapping. It is disappointing that such a predator will be placed in a disadvantaged community, but hopefully, legislation like SB832 will prevent this from happening in the future.
When considering legislation related to SVPs, we should ask ourselves whether we would want to raise our children next door to someone like Douglas Badger. If the answer is no, we should not force it upon our constituents. We must prioritize public safety and ensure that our communities are protected from these dangerous individuals.

Eversource Gas Says I Have A Leak
Jackie Owens’ home has a gas leak, according to Eversource Gas, her energy company. But that’s wrong, and the error cost her $222. Can she get her money back?
Q: I have a problem with Eversource Gas, our energy company in western Massachusetts. An Eversource gas company technician came to our door recently, claiming someone passing by our home called them to say they smelled gas and he needed to check our furnaces.
After his check, he said we had gas leaks from both of our furnaces and that he had to shut them down. I called a licensed heating contractor, who came the next day to check. There were no leaks.
A second Eversource technician came out and agreed that we had no leaks. I have filled out a complaint form and called the Eversource claims department several times since then. No one answers.
There’s only an automated message that asks me to leave a message and that someone will call me back within two business days. It’s been more than five weeks.
I want Eversource to refund the $222 I had to pay the licensed heating contractor. Can you help me?
~ Jackie Owens, Feeding Hills, Mass
A: The Eversource Gas technician made a mistake when he said you had a gas leak. The company should cover your expenses promptly instead of stringing you along like this.
But in Eversource’s defense, it is always better to err on the side of caution. A natural gas leak can cause a disastrous fire or gas poisoning. You don’t want that to happen to you, so if there’s even a chance that it would, it’s better to check it out.

Do I have to pay this service bill?
By Tom Morrow
With today’s 21st century reality of electric vehicles, there once was a man whose automotive concepts were years ahead of his time, many of them standard in today’s cars.
Preston Tucker, born Sept. 21, 1903, is most remembered for his 1948 Tucker sedan, initially nicknamed the “Tucker Torpedo.” The car was futuristic, introducing many features that have since become widely adapted for modern automobiles.
Tucker grew up near Detroit and was obsessed with automobiles from an early age. During World War II, Tucker became associated with Andrew Jackson Higgins, builder of Liberty ships, PT boats

and landing craft. Tucker moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, to serve as a vice-president of Higgins Industries, specifically in charge of the HigginsTucker Aviation division. This entity produced gun turrets, armament, and engines for Higgins’ torpedo boats. After the war, the public was ready for totally new car designs, but the Big Three Detroit automakers (Ford, General Motors and Chrysler) had not developed any new models since 1941, and were in no hurry to introduce them. That provided great opportunities for independent automakers to rapidly produce cars.
Tucker’s first design appeared in Science Illustrated magazine in December 1946, showing a futuristic version of the car with a hydraulic drive system. The motoring public was now excited about the Tucker.
But, in 1949, production of the Tucker ‘48 was shut down amidst scandal and controversial accusations of stock fraud. The 1988 movie Tucker: The Man and His Dream, starring Jeff Bridges, is based on Tucker’s life surrounding the car’s production.
Tucker’s specifications for his revolutionary car called for a rear engine, a low-RPM 589 cubic inch engine with hydraulic valves instead[of a camshaft, fuel injection, directdrive torque converters on each rear wheel (instead of a transmission), disc brakes, the location of all instruments within the diameter and reach of the steering wheel, a padded dashboard, and self-sealing tubeless tires.
Also, the design had independent springless suspension, a chassis that protected occupants in a side impact, a roll bar within the roof, a

laminated windshield designed to pop out during an accident, and a center “cyclops” headlight which would turn when steering at angles greater than 10 degrees in order to improve visibility around corners during night driving. All of these developments were years ahead of their time.
Having run out of time to develop the 589-cubic-inch engine, Tucker settled on a modified aircraft engine.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was embittered after small automaker Henry J. Kaiser was given millions of dollars in grants towards development of his new Kaiser and Frazer cars, but reportedly squandered the money. While Tucker took no money from the federal government, SEC kept him under close scrutiny.
An SEC trial began on Oct. 4, 1949, and the factory was closed on the very same day. At that point, only 38 Tucker ‘48s had been built. A corps of 300 loyal employees returned to the factory (some without pay) and finished assembly of another 13 cars for a total of 51 cars.

Tauck Requires I Get A COVID Vaccine To Cruise I require a refund!
Daryl DeCrow cancels his Tauck cruise after it imposes a COVID vaccine requirement. Does he deserve a refund?
Q: In early 2021, my girlfriend and I booked a fall foliage riverboat cruise with Tauck. At the time, there was no requirement for us to be vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus.
A year later, just before our cruise, I received a “COVID-19 Policy Update For Your Upcoming Journey” email. It required all guests to be “up to date” with their vaccinations.
We would have never booked this tour if this requirement had been in place in 2021. Tauck changed the terms of its agreement without our consent.
After receiving the COVID-19 policy update, we canceled the tour.
Tauck gave us eVouchers for our next reservation, which are useless to us because of Tauck’s COVID19 policy.
I want a complete refund of the four eVouchers. Can you help me?
~ Daryl DeCrow, Simi Valley, Calif.
A: If Tauck changed its terms, you should be able to get a full refund. But your story is more complicated than that.
You had made a reservation with Tauck as far back as 2018 but could not go on the cruise because the tour operator canceled it in the wake of the pandemic. Tauck eventually offered you vouchers for the purchase of a future insurance policy, which you used on your fall foliage cruise. The vouchers were not refundable.
Tauck’s non refundability rule on
its vouchers is normal. Your fear that it would always require a proof of vaccination might not be valid. Many cruise lines have dropped their vaccine requirements, so you never know. Still, you thought you were stuck with worthless credit and you wanted your money back. And this case gets even more complicated. It turns out Tauck had mistakenly issued you two additional vouchers after you canceled your latest cruise. Oh boy, that’s confusing.
You could have sent a brief, polite appeal to Tauck. It looks like you tried to contact one of their vice presidents twice by mail. I list more names, numbers and email addresses of the Tauck customer service executives on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. You might have persuaded someone higher up to review your case and run the numbers on the refunds. It gets worse. Once I brought this
case to Tauck, you faced another delay. The reason: Ironically, the person handling customer service was out sick -- with COVID.
“We recognize that there are extenuating circumstances here, including communications shortcomings on Tauck’s part related to our vaccination policy, and the error we made with the travel vouchers,” a Tauck spokesman told me.
Tauck agreed to refund you and your girlfriend a refund for the vouchers, which you accepted.

reer lost its past lustre. Nonetheless, she became an adviser to many famous clients, including Ronald and Nancy Reagan.
Ms. Dixon had told Ronald Reagan that he would become California governor and also President of the United States one day.
Reagan was forever interested in astrology and read his horoscope assiduously in the newspaper.
When he became governor of California his interest in astrology took other forms of endorsements.
For example, while California governor he signed a bill to allow astrologers to practise their trade and remove them from the category of being fortune tellers.
REAGANS SECRETLY HIRED & PUT ASTROLOGER ON PAYROLL & CONSULTED HER DURING BOTH WHITE HOUSE
TERMS. As with her husband, Nancy Reagan trafficked with noted astrologers and was well aware of astrologer Joan Quigley.
Quigley was well known on her own right, she had published two books on astrology and was a frequent and popular guest on the nationally syndicated TV programme
called The Merv Griffin Show.
Nancy Reagan first met Joan Quigley in the 1970s on the Merv Griffin Show.
Many years later, after Ronald Reagan became U. S. President and after the near-fatal attempt on his life on 30 March 1981, Merv Griffin called the First Lady to tell her that Joan Quigley had predicted great danger for Ronald Reagan on that particular day.
In addition to what Merv Griffin had heard from Quigley, the ABC News programme “Nightline” with popular fixture Ted Koppel, broke the news in front of a disbelieving television viewing audience numbering in the millions about Quigley’s prediction on Reagan.
News anchor Ted Koppel reported that he learned before the president was shot on 30 March 1981, that an astrologer had predicted great danger to President Ronald Reagan and that something terrible would happen that particular day.
After Merv Griffin urgently called Nancy Reagan informing her of Joan Quigley’s prior comments and prediction on the president, the First Lady frantically made the long distance call to personally speak with the San Francisco-based astrologer, 53-year-olde Joan Quigley.
Nancy was thunderstruck and con-
vinced after hearing Quigley’s insightful detailed information.
When the First Lady inquired of Quigley if the near-fatal event could have been predicted and prevented beforehand, Quigley answered unequivocally: “Yes.”
Nancy screamed: “OH, MY GOD! I COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS!”
In a micro-second, Nancy Reagan shifted her allegiance from Jeane Dixon to Dixon’s main rival, Joan Quigley.
Nancy was so committed in her quest to protect her husband at all cost, that she revealed to him only her plans to use astrology to keep him safe in his scheduling.
The President was informed of Nancy’s planned secret consultations with astrologer Joan Quigley, but, the president would later be shocked at further details of “hidden payments” and having the astrologer on the White House payroll.
At the time, he would agree to go along, but admonished her on keeping such exploits secret for fear of embarrassment if it ever got out.
“ASTROLOGER TO THE WHITE HOUSE” SECRETLY PAID $ 3,000 A MONTH (EQUIVALENT TO $10,000 A MONTH TODAY)!
The secret astrologer to the White
House was secretly paid $3,000 per month (today’s equivalent of $10,000 each month)!
As astounding and surreal as all of these facts may seem, it nevertheless came to be.
Additionally, all of the “occult checks” were kept ultra secret, even from the president during the first weeks.
After their initial phone call, Quigley agreed to give the First Lady regular readings on her husband’s future -- for a price.
“The astrologer insisted that she be paid by the hour, with a $3,000a-month retainer,” says Karen Tumulty, Congressional correspondent and political columnist for The Washington Post after the scenario was fully leaked.
Other astrologers, such as Joyce Jillson of Los Angeles, tried to capitalise and ride on Joan Quigley’s coattails by telling the Associated Press that she “spent a lot of time” at the White House after the assassination attempt. However Jillson’s lie exploded in her face when the Reagans openly stated to The Washington Post that they did not even know Ms. Jillson.
QUIGLEY’S BILLS TO WHITE HOUSE WERE SECRETLY

extensive testing and safety measures in place. We don’t want to admit it, but humans cause the majority of accidents. A recent study done by Waymo showed over a million miles driven and only two accidents with their cars, both of which were caused by the other human driver.
By Jim Desmond
Recently, I was able to tour Waymo, which is an autonomous driving technology company owned by Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company. Waymo is similar to a self-driving Uber.
Though it was a bit eerie getting in a car that didn’t have a driver, I was really impressed by the safety and convenience of the process. The way it works is using an app (similar to Uber) you summon a car and enter your destination. Once the car picks you up, you put on your seatbelt and press go on the screen.
One of the most impressive things about Waymo’s technology is the
The Waymo vehicle easily reacted to yields, four-way stops and other scenarios it encountered. During the tour, I learned about the various components that make up the technology, including sensors, cameras, and advanced software that enables Waymo’s self-driving cars to navigate through complex environments seamlessly.
I believe that autonomous driving technology like Waymo’s will transform the way we travel and create safer and more efficient transportation options for people around the world.
Let me know what you think about driving cars, and, would you like to see the technology expand?

“I am proud to support the reconstruction of Villa Serena, a true collaborative effort between National CORE, the City of San Marcos and the County of San Diego,” San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said. “This community represents a significant investment in safe and affordable housing for our residents and provides a platform for neighborhood stabilization. With the completion of the first phase of this two-phase transformation, we are one step closer to bringing beautiful apartments that our residents can be proud to call home.”
The first phase includes 85 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartment homes for individuals and families earning less than 60% of the area median income. Eight homes are set aside for young adults aging out of the foster care system. Fortyseven of the homes have three bedrooms to better meet the needs of the family-centric neighborhood.
“The reopening of the Villa Serena housing community further demonstrates the City’s efforts in prioritizing safe and adequate housing for all resident types, regardless of financial hardship,” San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones said. “Through revitalizing Villa Serena, the City offers a helping hand to San Marcos residents in an effort to combat the current affordable housing crisis and hopes to do so for many other communities in the future.
“As an advocate for San Marcos residents, I want all residents to find a place in our City to call home where worries of unlivable conditions and cost do not impact
their life. I am extremely grateful for the collaborative work between the City, the County of San Diego, Wells Fargo Bank and California Community Reinvestment to make this mission possible to improve the lives of our San Marcos community members.”
Amenities include a 1,933-squarefoot community center, a community kitchen, computer lab, outdoor play areas and an outdoor gathering space with seating.
“When it comes to ensuring the health and safety of North County neighbors, affordable housing coupled with onsite services remains one of the most crucial components,” Director of Housing and Community Development Services for the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency David Estrella said. “With programs like the County of San Diego Innovative Housing Trust Fund we are continuing to bring folks into permanent affordable homes, to help maintain stable housing, and to allow residents the opportunity to thrive.”
Because stable housing is only one part of the solution, the Hope through Housing Foundation provides direct services to Villa Serena residents. Hope through Housing will help children and teens achieve success, improve families’ financial well-being and promote health and wellness for residents of all ages. A partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos gives residents access to neighborhood after-school programs and a state-of-the-art 6,000-square-foot clubhouse within walking distance at Westlake Village.

Fishing & Hiking Are Highlights Of New Open Space
Long-awaited public access to a retired reservoir in San Marcos became a reality today as city and water district officials celebrated the grand opening of South Lake Park.
The 10-acre site is located at 975 Sunstone Drive and includes a mile-long hiking trail around the lake, idyllic spots for fishing, and a small parking lot.
“After years of planning, we are so proud to finally cut the ribbon on this much-anticipated community park and welcome residents to this special location,” said City of
San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones. “Today is a shining example of what is possible when you persevere and hold true to your vision.”
The park has been planned since 2005, when the city made a deal to rent the old reservoir from Vallecitos Water District for $1 a year for 50 years.
“When the District’s need for the reservoir ended, the visionary leaders on the City Council and Water Board had the wonderful idea to open this space up to the public,” explained Vallecitos Water District President Jim Hernandez. “Thanks to them, and all those that came after, we can now enjoy this beautiful retreat in our community.”
The lake was built in 1959 and provided drinking water to the Lake San Marcos and Coronado Hills areas until 1984 when Vallecitos Water District decommissioned its use.
At its maximum capacity, Southlake can hold 73 million gallons of water. It is filled with run off from rain and fluctuates with drought conditions. The deepest part of the lake is 50 feet.
Prior to the park opening, the lake was inaccessible to the public and sat behind locked gates. It has served as an emergency water storage reservoir in the past – a role that will continue.
The project is a joint effort between the City of San Marcos and Vallecitos Water District.

If you are reading this column there’s an excellent chance that you over 55, own a PC and cell phone and use the Internet daily. There is also a 99.9% statistical likelihood that you can’t` run as fast or jump as high as you could when you were twenty. As seniors we are definitely in the “second half” closing in on the “final quarter” and we share the ravages of aging to varying degrees. Ninety year old Canadian Arnold Nett competes in the 60 meter hurdles and Pentathlon and wins. Nett has a daily jog plus a two and a half hour work-out twice a week to stay in shape. Few of us have that kind of commitment but many of us do use things like golf, pickle ball and “silver sneakers” to stay physically active and fit.

where on the planet. Easy Internet fingertip access to the world of current events, science, technology, entertainment etc allows us the opportunity to stay current and relevant in our rapidly changing world. Advances in health and medicine have extended the length and quality of our lives significantly. Today’s American seniors are healthier, wealthier and better informed than at any time in human history.
In previous generations parents typically spent their post retirement years in the homes of their adult children. They participated in running the household, sharing chores and helping to raise the grandkids until they died. It was an informal, natural and loving way of life. Today, independent postretirement living is the norm for seniors. Social Security, Medicare and private pension plans have allowed many seniors to comfortably live their retirement years independently. This independence has created some new problems. For example, Grandma had two fender benders in January and took out a stop sign last month. The court took her driver’s license but she didn’t tell Grandpa. She still drives him everywhere he needs to go. Grandpa won’t tell anyone that he got scammed for a thousand dollar gift card he e-mailed to the “Julian police” in order to bail his nephew out of the “Julian jail”, there is no jail in Julian.
Seniors are the main targets for Internet scammers. Seniors grew up in an age when nearly all transactions were local, face to face and
with people you knew. Seniors are typically honest and tend to believe what people tell them. When they receive a call or e-mail from Microsoft, Google, The County Sherriff, the bank, the IRS, the Electric Utility etc, they assume that it’s genuine and tend to obey the instruction. When they get scammed, they feel foolish and tend to keep quiet. They don’t report scammers to the police or their relatives because they are afraid they will be considered incompetent to manage their own affairs. Eventually their problems come to light and the courts restrict access to their assets by appointing a fiduciary. Relatives may even confiscate their computers to protect them from scammers.
Some seniors maintain mental clarity up to the minute they step off the planet, some don’t. Whether or not we have all our marbles,
our trusting nature makes us targets. A few simple precautions can help protect you and your friends and relatives from phone and Internet scams. First: educate yourself by reading up on “Internet and phone scams and exploits” on the WWW. Second: establish a trusted “go to person” (friend relative) and always talk to them before you commit money or information online or on the phone. Third: Call or e-mail us here at the Computer Factory and tell us what’s going on, we’ve seen it all.
Becoming a “scam” victim at any age is depressing. Especially when you think you’ve done something smart or good and it ends up making you feel stupid. It can happen to anyone, but if it happens to you and you need to talk about it, give us a call. Your experience may save someone else from suffering the same fate.

Kids and animals are innocent. We’re responsible for people and pets who cannot defend themselves.
National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes that it’s important for us to work together to prevent child abuse and neglect.
The organizers of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month say that being cruel to animals is an unjustifiable act that shouldn’t exist. They say that animal neglect is the most common form of abuse.
The common thread between child abuse and animal cruelty is neglect.
Neglect can be going on right next door and you don’t even notice. You don’t see it happening, so you don’t report it.
Neglecting a pet can be as subtle as “forgetting” to feed it. On a hot, sunny day, the pet is left outside with no shade or water. If a dog is living alone, chained to a doghouse, that’s neglect. A sick or injured pet that is not receiving medical care is being neglected.
The Animal Legal Defense Fund
says, “Animal neglect is the failure to provide basic care required for an animal to thrive. At first glance, such cases may seem less

If someone is neglecting a pet, there’s a chance that they’re also neglecting human family members. Does anyone come to mind?

A Last-Minute Surprise For Summer Travelers ~ And A Warning
Forget everything you think you know about travel this summer. All that talk about this being the busiest and most expensive summer ever and how you ought to book now -- well, that’s just talk.
The conventional wisdom about summer travel has been turned on its head in recent days. Knowing about this could save you a little money and a lot of trouble.
What’s everyone expecting? A survey released last week by the American Society of Travel Advisors suggests everyone wants to travel next month. Almost half of Americans ranked a vacation as their number-one discretionary spend, and one-third plan to travel abroad this summer. Americans are on track to spend a record $200 billion, according to Allianz Partners.
“Travel is experiencing an unquestionable resurgence,” says Laurel Greatrix, a spokeswoman for Viator. The company’s research, released last month, predicts travel will finally return to pre-pandemic levels and that Americans are looking for an adventure.
But attitudes are shifting, say insiders. Travelers are uncertain about their upcoming plans. Bank failures, a cooling economy, and other economic worries are weighing heavily on summer travel plans. There’s a sense that anything could happen. It might be as busy as everyone predicts, but it might not.
So what does that mean? I asked the contrarians.
No Reservations
You’ve probably heard the drumbeat of experts claiming this will be a sold-out summer. But Shelley Hunter, an innkeeper from Quincy, Calif., has been watching the reservations for this June, July and August, and she says that’s nonsense.
“People are not making advanced summer plans,” she says. “I predict tourist travel to our destination will be a last-minute decision.” Yep, just like the summer of 2021, when travelers were on the fence until the very last minute. And that was a pandemic recovery year, with plenty of deals to be had.
She’s not the only one. I’ve talked to numerous people in the tourism industry who say their customers are still on the fence about taking a summer vacation.
Travel Fatigue?
It’s not just the uncertain economy that’s leading to weaker demand for travel this summer. People are just tired of the make-up trips they did in 2021 and 2022, so they
need a break. At least that’s what Christopher Falvey, co-founder of Unique NOLA Tours in New Orleans, told me.
“I think we can expect a temporary crash because there are no more people looking to travel,” he says. “They spent their allotted time and money.”
How much of a crash? “I expect this summer to be as dead as it’s been in a long time,” he says.
Pay Upfront
Travel companies, and especially hotels, went soft on us after the pandemic. They refunded nonrefundable rooms and waived fees to get you back in the door. Not anymore, say experts.
Travel advisor Heather Herbert says more hotels will require prepaid, nonrefundable reservations. “We are already seeing this,” she says.
No one tracks refund rules in the travel industry, but there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that airlines, hotels and vacation rental hosts are tightening their refund policies to require you to pay upfront and lose everything if you cancel. That might make people think twice before making vacation plans.
Watch Out For Disruptions
If you expect smooth sailing this summer, think again. Rajeev Shrivastava, CEO of VisitorsCoverage, an insurance marketplace, predicts the recent increase of flight cancellations and other operational issues resulting from strikes or inclement weather conditions will continue throughout the summer.
“Now more than ever, travelers need to prepare well for unpredictability,” he adds.
A Summer Of Danger?
If you’re traveling internationally this summer, things might also get
a little dicey. That’s particularly true if you’re headed to places that have a reputation for being volatile, like the Middle East.
Lately, there’s been a steady stream of incidents in Israel, and experts say they could worsen as the summer travel season begins.
“Travelers to some regions should expect increased terrorist attacks,” warns Brandon Frady, a licensed insurance agent with Clearsurance.com.
Customer Service Is Circling The Drain
Here’s something else almost no one is discussing. Customer service is circling the drain in the travel industry, and especially for airlines (77,656 airline complaints in 2022, up 55% from the year before). It took the Department of Transportation more than three months to release the number of airline grievances, which set a post-pandemic record.
The customer service problems extend to the hotel industry, which is still struggling to recover from the Great Resignation. Julie Ann Hargett, a travel advisor and frequent traveler, says she’s shocked by the lack of service, which she predicts will worsen this summer.
“I think the general public is under the impression that service and quality have gone back to normal,” she says. “This is not the case.”
Just last week, she stayed at a resort that had two luggage carts for more than 300 rooms. She carried her own luggage to her room. She said no one answered when she called the front desk.
“It was pointless,” she says.
What Will Really Happen This Summer
Does anyone really know what will happen this summer? Of course not.
For all we know, the early projections could be correct. It could turn into a free-for-all with wallto-wall crowds and record-high prices. Then again, we might be looking at a last-minute pivot to a calmer and less expensive vacation season.
I’m hoping for less drama. We had so much craziness last summer, with airlines forgetting how to take care of their customers and hotels raising their rates through the roof, I think we’re entitled to just one sane summer.
Expedia predicts 2023 will be the year of “no-normal” travel. Although it defined no-normal as people traveling the way they want to, as opposed to the way everyone else is, the no-normal label seems appropriate for this summer.
Maybe not in the way Expedia meant it, but there’s no question that this summer will be anything but normal.
Elliott’s Summer Travel Tips
I’ve been on the road every summer since I can remember, and I suspect this summer will be like no other. Here’s how I’m handling it:
Don’t plan too far ahead. Only a few days ago, the conventional wisdom was to book now or lose any chance of a summer vacation. But it looks like demand could weaken during the summer, especially if the economy cools. Good things may come to those who wait.
Look for early sales. If people stay home, there will be sales. Usually, we see fare sales in the middle of summer as bookings slow down. This year, if the current trends hold, the sales could start sooner than usual and could be more aggressive. Be patient.
Avoid the hotspots. Unless the economy takes a significant turn for the worse, all the places that are normally crowded will be even more crowded this summer. Domestically, Orlando, Las Vegas, and New York will be sold out; internationally, it’s Paris, London and Rome. Visit these places during the early fall when the crowds dissipate.

ROUTED & PRESIDENTIAL STAFF “LOOKED THE OTHER WAY.” Quigley tallied a monthly bill and sent it to the First Lady via a little-known private ZIP code which routes personal correspondences straight to the presidential residence, according to White House Correspondent, Karen Tumulty.
A California confidante – who Nancy never revealed in her book – paid the bills on the First Lady’s behalf, and to whom Nancy later reimbursed.
“Checks to an astrologer signed by a First Lady created an obvious potential for embarrassment,” Tumulty later noted to The Washington Post.
In exercising and influencing some of President Reagan’s more important agenda plans, Nancy soon found that she could not always enforce Quigley’s edicts (on keeping the President safe) on her own.
For that, she needed an Oval Office accomplice: surrogate son Michael Deaver, one of the three close Reagan advisers who formed the president’s power-sharing “troika.”
The president’s personal Chief of Staff, James Baker, Jr. just looked the other way.
In time, it would be confirmed that First Lady Nancy Reagan regularly talked to an astrologer for emotional comfort after the failed assassination attempt, but the full details of secretly having an astrologer on the White House payroll as a full-time advisor who influenced the president’s schedule was still kept under wraps at the time.
THOMPSON
CALLING ALL CRAFTERS
BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION, BOTH PRESIDENT & FIRST LADY REAGAN WERE DEEPLY SUPERSTITIOUS. Trusted aide and press secretary to Nancy Reagan, Elaine Crispen, confirmed in an interview with The Washington Post (which was authorised by the President and First Lady Nancy Reagan) the following:
“I verified (with First Lady Nancy Reagan) that yes, she does talk to an astrologer. After March 30 1981 (when President Reagan was nearly assassinated) she was really more frightened than anyone knew. She was talking to friends, a lot of people, for comfort, and one of these is an old friend who does do astrology. She talked to this person only as it related to his (Reagan’s) safety and safe times for him.”
When asked by the Washington Post who the mysterious astrologer was, Nancy Reagan’s Press Secretary declined to answer.
Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff, Michael K. Deaver, the aide considered closest to Reagan, wrote in his book that the president is: “Incurably superstitious,” and carried a variety of good luck charms.
Even prior to his White House years, Reagan never boarded an airplane without his “lucky cuff links,” and a miniature gold calendar with pages that marked their wedding date with purple stones.
And also the president repeatedly acknowledged that his lucky number was 33 and that he has been known to throw salt over his shoulder.
Michael K. Deaver, President Reagan’s closest aide for over two decades, also stated:
“If he (President Reagan) emptied
his pants pocket you would always find about five good luck charms.
SUMMATION. Some may find it ironic or irreconcilable or perhaps troubling that Ronald Reagan was a devout Christian man and his favourite remark about the Bible was: “Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.”
I have no problem in viewing Ronald and Mrs. Reagan through prismatic lighting.
I have no problem in seeing the Reagans as flawed human beings, as we all are.
I also have a pet saying from the Good Book:
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of our your own eye. Judge not, lest ye be judged.”
(Matthew 7:1-5)
Pretty cool saying, doncha think?

The Eversource technician who showed up at your home should have known how to spot a leak. Maybe he had just started his job. But if you incurred additional expenses because of the misdiagnosis, it’s on Eversource.
You did the right thing by filling out the form. The phone call was less helpful. I think the “we’ll get back to you in two days” is funny. And not just because Eversource missed it by four months and 28 days, but because it speaks volumes about the company’s customer service values. Ironically, Eversource’s mission statement is to deliver “reliable energy and superior customer service.”
Apparently, this did not happen in your case.
Filling out the Eversource form created a paper trail, which shows you tried to resolve this problem through normal customer service channels. The phone call, not so much -- unless you recorded it.
I reached out to Eversource on your behalf. The company also put me on “hold” for several weeks. I contacted it again, and a few days later you received a check for $222.

blessed you.
In closing, my grandfather used to have Hollandia dairy trucks deliver milk to his home down in San Diego and the driver would come in and place it directly into the fridge. They personally knew the Dutch driver by the name of “Henk” (the older members of the de Jong family will know the name). We still drink Hollandia milk from Walmart. I never met Mr. Arie de Jong, but after reading your “Man About Town” column, Lyle, I felt that I did “meet” him after all. Especially when you ended your column by writing: “It’s hard for me to accept the fact that this lovely man with a big, booming voice is gone. I shall miss his cheery phone calls -- “Lyle, this is Arie de Jong! How you doing? You feeling better?”
Forgive us for writing such a long “Letter to the Editor.” But Lyle, don’t you think your dear friend Mr. Arie de Jong deserves this? God bless the entire De Jong family.

Fredrick Gomez’s recent article “The Mark Twain The World Never Saw” was excellent. It was well written, thoroughly researched, and precisely focused. Not only is Huckleberry Finn absolutely the Great American Novel, it is a huge condemnation of racism. I really appreciated the read. Thank you.

The SEC contended Tucker never intended to produce a car. Throughout the trial, the SEC report on Tucker was classified as “secret” and even though his attorneys were never allowed to view or read it, it was leaked to the press.
The prosecution and defense continued debating until the judge demanded the SEC prosecutors “get down to the meat of the case and start proving the conspiracy charge.”
Tucker’s defense attorneys surprised everyone by refusing to call any witnesses. Defense attorney Daniel Glasser told the court, “It is impossible to present a defense when there has been no offense.” Kirby invited the jury to take a ride in one of the eight Tucker ‘48s parked in front of the courthouse. The verdict came in “not guilty” on all counts.
Despite the outcome of the trial, speculation has whether Tucker genuinely intended to produce a new car and bring it to market,

Preston Tucker’s reputation rebounded after the acquittal. His optimism was remarkable; after the trial was over, he was quoted as saying, “Even Henry Ford failed
