Hoppy, Gene, Roy . . .

Those of us who have more than a few years under our belt occasionally take the time to stop and look back at the trails we have traveled. With that look back toward our younger years we often bring back memories - pleasant memories mostly. Memories of being kids . . . of going to the movies on a Saturday afternoon and paying a whole nine cents for admission. And seeing the good guys like Hopalong Cassidy, Lash LaRue, Wild Bill Elliot . . . Bob Steele, and other cowboy stars from a bygone era.

We would sit on the edge of our seats and see if the good guys would win again, or if the bad guys would finally prevail. Often, we’d have to wait a week because the adventures were in serial fashion. You’d have our hero right in the middle of an impossible situation . . . surely he could not escape this time. We’d just have to come back next Saturday to see how, or whether, he escaped.

About this same time there were ‘The Big Three’ cowboys. Not only were they on the silver screen but there was this new-fangled inven-

tion called the television set that had regular programs starring our favorite good guys. Soon, ‘The Big Three’ emerged as the most popular of the B Western movies. They were Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy.

Oh, there were a lot of other movie and tv cowboys . . . and we’ll get to them in a bit. But first, let’s look at “The Big Three.”

I’ll start with Gene Autry first because that’s the cowboy with whom I have the closest, somewhat tenuous, contact.

Back in 1968 and 1969 I managed KGUD radio station in Santa Barbara, for Dick Clark (yes, that Dick Clark).

My secretary was a gal named Peggy Rogers. She had been Gene Autry’s private secretary for years at Republic Studios and had his home number as well as his private office number. They spoke frequently by phone.

While I never met Mr. Autry, I heard plenty of tales about him.

His real name was Orvon Grover

Autry. Autry was born in 1907 and died in 1998. We remember him as a singin’ cowboy . . . but he was also quite an astute businessman, probably the most successful of ‘The Big Three.’ Autry’s career blossomed from the mid-‘30’s through the 1950’s. All of The Big Three were continually top votegetters in the annual Motion Picture Herald and Boxoffice polls and popularity rankings. As the B western faded all three migrated from movies to the tv screen, successfully. All had successful radio programs. All three made regular personal appearances at huge venues, such as Madison Square Garden.

Autry’s Melody Ranch was a tv show that debuted in 1940 and ran for 16 years on CBS, later moving into syndication out of the tv studios in LA. We have visited the set of Melody Ranch many times.

Autry and Rogers, being singin’ cowboys, made records but Gene was clearly the most successful.

Autry amassed the largest “empire” of the three: he owned TV and radio stations as well as the California Angels baseball team.

And in addition to his own weekly TV program, Gene’s Flying A Production company made other 1950s shows such as The Range

Rider, Buffalo Bill Jr., The Adventures of Annie Oakley, and more. We are still listening to his songs today, particularly at Christmas time when we hear about “Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty, the Snowman,” and “Here Comes Santa Claus,” and another favorite, later in the season, “Here Comes Peter Cottontail.”

Gene had over two dozen “charted” tunes, and one of his earliest was “That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine,” which became a success after his performances in “The Phantom Empire” (Mascot, 1935) and his first starring role for Republic Pictures, “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” 1935.

Sgt. Autry was in the U.S. Army Air Force, flying supplies in the China-India-Burma theater of war, and served for 4+ years. After the war, Gene returned to Republic to finish out his contract obligations in five new films, the first of which was “Sioux City Sue,” (Republic, 1946). He then created his own production company and moved to Columbia Pictures for a new round of oaters. While Autry was in the service, his role of “King of the Cowboys,’ was overtaken by Roy Rogers.

Roy Rogers had nine “charted” songs between 1938 and 1975, the last being “Hoppy, Gene and Me” and his first was “Hi Yo Silver” which was popularized due to the radio program and the The Lone Ranger (1938) Republic serial.

There are two words in life that will open a lot of doors. “Push” and “Pull.”

AMEN: The only part of a prayer that everyone knows.

There is a priceless story about Roy Rogers:

Roy Rogers was born Leonard Sly in 1911, on a pig farm near Duck Run, Ohio. When he had reached the height of his fame as Hollywood’s most glamorous cowboy star, he happened to be making a personal appearance in Chicago, and he got the idea for a little experiment. It was a studio requirement that Roy always wear his cowboy duds in public and one day he had been out walking in the Loop, attired in his sky-blue outfit and big white hat.

Crowds of people pushed him around, wanting his autograph, wanting to talk to him, to touch him. It was that way every time he went out.

Back in his hotel, he thought about how nice it would be for a change to walk the city streets without being recognized.

It had been a dozen years since he had worn a business suit, but now he called in a tailor and ordered one, a plain blue serge, a pair of black oxfords, and a white shirt and plain necktie and an ordinary hat. He put all these things on and went for another walk. Nobody gave him a second look.

He enjoyed the sensation so much that the next day when he boarded “The Chief” for Los Angeles, he was still wearing the civvies. He lounged in the club car and no one recognized

him and then, walking through the moving train, he arrived in a vestibule between cars and came face to face with a man walking in the opposite direction. The two stared at each other and Roy recognized a former resident of Duck Run, Ohio. But before he could say a word the other man cried out:

“Great God A’Mighty! Leonard Sly! WHIRR YOU BEEN?”

While Autry was in the service, Roy’s “King of the Cowboys,” was released in April 1943, and that became the official Rogers billing. 1942 was Gene Autry’s last #1 popularity rating --- Rogers took over the crown in 1943, and would hold that #1 rating through the end of the B western genre in the early 1950s (with Autry coming in a consistent #2).

Roy Rogers rode a number of horses during his film and television careers --- they were all billed as “Trigger.” In over a quarter century performing in public, he used three main Palominos:

1. The original (known on movie sets as “the Old Man”)

2. Little Trigger (featured on the cover of Life magazine in 1943 and in SON OF PALEFACE (1952))

3. Trigger, Jr. The original Trigger was born in 1934 on a ranch in San Diego.

PROCESSION: The ceremonial formation at the beginning of Mass consisting of altar servers, the celebrant, and late parishioners looking for seats.

Looking at todays horribly inflated salaries for movie “stars,” it’s interesting to see what the cowboy stars of yesteryear earned:

Roy Rogers’ initial salary was $75.00/weekly and at the end of the contract(s), his pay had escalated to $1000.00/weekly.

Rogers then signed a term picture arrangement which included a $10,000.00 bonus and pay of $21,000.00 plus a $500.00 clothing allowance for each of 11 films over a 2-year period.

In February 1950, Republic exercised their option to extend that contract for six more films at $21,667.00 each.

Republic and Roy agreed to another extension for his final two westerns at $25,000.00 each. Quite a difference from today’s pay scales.

Roy Rogers died in 1998.

Two singin’ cowboys and a mature ‘man of the west’ who wore black (but in reality, it was dark blue).

Because of their popularity, “The Big Three” were the ones that brought in the $$$ for their film production companies ... and theater owners flocked to show their films ... and that caused them to be more popular ... and on, and on.

William Boyd was the other member of “The Big Three.”

His real name was William Lawrence Boyd. He was born in 1895 and died in 1972 of heart problems.

Bill Boyd was best known as “Hopalong Cassidy.” He was the third part of the Big Three but it was Gene Autry and Roy Rogers who battled for the number one position in popularity polls.

Boyd was the ‘senior, mature, cowboy’ who was still quick thinking, quick acting, and was always the good guy.

Shortly after his family moved to Oklahoma, both parents died and William was forced to quit school and toiled in the state’s oil fields. He later worked his way westward at an assortment of odd jobs, orange packer, laborer, and night watchman in California, while trying to break into movies.

Boyd’s premature gray hair added dignity to the character, who didn’t smoke, drink, or swear. He played 54 Cassidy episodes before producer Harry “Pop” Sherman dropped the series in 1943. Boyd then took over as producer and turned out 12

more episodes. He later acquired all rights to the Cassidy character, and when television came along, he made a fortune from exhibiting his old films, from the production of new ones, and from a variety of by-products tied in with “Hopalong Cassidy.” I can remember being the proud owner of a Hopalong Cassiday Lunch Bucket and a black twin holster set with two “pearl-handled” cap guns.

Three of Boyd’s four marriages ended in divorce.

Boyd starred in 66 full-featured Hopalong Cassidy films, 52 halfhour television programs, and 104 radio shows.

His horse was ‘Topper,’ a white horse that contrasted with his dark blue clothing.

Other Notable Cowboy stars and sidekicks

“Wild bill” Elliott Real Name: Gordon Nance 1903 or 1904 - 1965

In his first eight films, the first appropriately titled CALLING WILD BILL ELLIOTT, Elliott played a character with his own screen name for the first time. He was teamed with George Gabby Hayes, probably filmdom’s top comic sidekick, and leading lady Anne Jeffreys who demonstrated her versatility as a schoolmarm, Indian maiden, saloon singer and other roles. Elliott continued with the trademark firearms and paint horse, called Sonny, and a new shirt (back to the square frontal button arrangement).

Elliott in mid-1944 became, on tv at least, Fred Harman’s comicstrip cowboy, Red Ryder. Republic had done a popular 1940 ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER earlier. Now the role was Elliott’s. In addition to working with Gabby Hayes, he also worked with another famous, now infamous, actor. Bobby Blake, who grew up to become actor Robert Blake, played Little Beaver, Red’s young Indian sidekick, in all sixteen films. The only wardrobe change was chaps for Elliott and a shirt with arrow

suspect arrested for stabbing mTs bus driver

On Wednesday, August 7th, at 8:48 pm, Escondido Police Dispatch received a 911 call regarding a man threatening people with a knife at the Escondido Transit Center located at 700 W. Valley Pkwy in Escondido.

While officers were en route, the caller advised that the same male had now entered an MTS bus and was actively stabbing the driver. The male suspect then fled the area on foot before police arrived. Officers quickly began to canvas the area and located a male matching the suspect description, later identified as Mario Joseph Felix, hiding behind the Barnes and Noble bookstore at 810 W. Valley Pkwy. Felix was combative and refused to comply with police commands when he was contacted. 40mm less than lethal sponge rounds were eventually used to assist in taking Felix into custody. Felix was positively identified as the suspect wanted in the stabbing.

The bus driver was located at the transit center, suffering from multiple stab wounds to his torso. He was treated at the scene by Escondido Fire Paramedics and transported to Palomar Medical Center, where he is currently listed in stable condition. Video evidence of the attack was obtained, and a knife was recovered near the area where Felix was arrested. Investigators discovered that Felix had demanded the bus driver’s wallet before stabbing him several times.

Man About Town

I have found Heaven!

Here on Earth Heaven is known as the Black&Blue Restaurant. Heaven is located within Valley View Casino, 16300 Nyemi Pass Road, Valley Center.

I had never dined at Black&Blue Restaurant before but had heard a great deal about it, all sang its praises.

I invited long time client and very good friend, Laura Strickler, to join me. Laura had dined here several years ago and remembered it as a superb restaurant for fine dining. It was a bit of a celebration

Mario Joseph Felix is a 50-year-old transient male resident of Escondido. He is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history, including two prior convictions for assaulting Escondido Police Officers. Felix is currently under California State PRCS Probation supervision.

Felix was booked at the Vista Detention Facility on charges of 664/187 PC (Attempted Murder), 211 PC (Robbery), 148(A)(1) PC Resisting/Obstructing Officers, and 3455 PC (PRCS Revocation). There are no other suspects in this case. Hit-and-run Victim Identified

The victim of a Thursday night hitand-run collision in the 1100 block of N. Fig St. has been identified as a 14-year-old Escondido boy. He remains in critical condition at an area hospital, and investigators are working to identify the suspect.

as Laura had recently joined a new firm and was excited about it.

As we entered the restaurant we were greeted by Chris Scala, Senior Restaurant Manager. Handsome, charming, great big smile on his face, impeccably groomed . . . and, clearly, a very experienced person in the hospitality profession.

We began our meal with a glass of wine. I had a had a nice cold Riesling, Laura chose a red wine, Joel Gott 815 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Both Laura and I decided on the same meal . . . their Special 3 Course Dinner. Laura had a salad, I had cream of mushroom soup as our starters. We both ordered the Brandt Filet Mignon with Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Vegetables with Cabernet Wine Sauce.

Escondido P.d. announces upcoming Citizens’ academy

The Escondido Police Department is pleased to announce it will be offering a Citizens’ Academy to be held in October of this year. This immersive, four-week program is open to current residents and business owners in the City of Escondido who are at least 18 years of age and have a genuine interest in learning more about the police department, its role within the community and how it addresses safety and quality of life issues by providing attendees with a hands-on experience unlike any other.

The program will consist of 12, two-hour sessions held at the Escondido Police Department on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm throughout the month of October.

“This program is ambitious and unique,” Police Chief Ed Varso said, “We have a fantastic relationship with the community and our goal in offering this Citizens’ Academy is to strengthen those bonds even more, while addressing any gaps that exist between the public’s perception of what we do, how we do it and why we do it.”

Lieutenant Damian Jackson is the program’s director and those looking to get additional information or interested in being a participant in the program are encouraged to contact him at citizen.academy@ escondido.gov or 760-839-4711.

The deadline to apply to the program is August 30th, 2024.

Letters to the Editor We love your letters!

I have never . . .ever had a steak that was as tasty as this Filet Mignon! Tender, juicy, I think you could have cut it with a butter knife! Laura enjoyed her Filet as well.

Eli, our server, made certain our water glasses were constantly topped off with pure Evian water . . . . and we were visited by Sous Chef Cristian Gonzalez and Senior Room Chef Gustavo Bedolla, both of whom proudly presented a special preparation of stuffed Agnolotti Pasta. This was so tasty that after the first bite Laura decided she just had to take this home to share with her mother.

Chris Scala would check on us from time to time to make certain we wanted for nothing. From time to time he and the chef staff would check on us. We felt rather pampered.

remember enjoying a meal more than at Black&Blue Restaurant. I give it a 5 star rating out of a possible 5 stars.

We spoke earlier of Laura Strickler having joined a new firm and how excited she is about it.

As most of you know I have known Laura since she was 17 years old and was working at the old Vineyard Deli in Escondido. She has grown so much since then! Today she is not only a mature, beautiful woman but ‘she’s got smarts!’ She makes superb presentations to corpora-

known to many ‘mature adults.’ He was associated with each of the ‘Big Three” at one time or another. Once known as simply George Hayes, later as “Windy” Hayes, and finally as his best known character part, “Gabby.”

Hayes is probably best remembered as the sidekick to Roy Rogers, and they appeared together in 41 films - their first was SOUTHWARD HO (Republic, 1939) and last, HELDORADO (Republic, 1946).

George Hayes was born in Wellsville, New York, on May 7, 1885, and during his teen years he joined some traveling shows. Burlesque and vaudeville work followed. He married Olive Ireland in 1914, and the two would be together for over forty years, until her death in 1957. Gabby and Olive had no children.

His first major role was portraying ‘Windy Haliday,’ the sidekick to Hopalong Cassidy at Paramount. The total Hoppy films in which Hayes played ‘Windy Halliday’ is eighteen. In 1939 Hayes switched to Republic Pictures and his first sidekick role with Roy Rogers was in SOUTHWARD HO (Republic, 1939). He did 41 films with Roy Rogers, but these were separated into two bunches - in between, Hayes was the saddle pal to Wild Bill Elliott in his 1943-1944 series of eight, as well as the first two Red Ryder oaters (which also starred Elliott).

Though he most often portrayed a cranky and crotchety oldtimer on film, in real life Hayes was the exact opposite - serious, well read, well dressed.

He was also well liked by all that knew him and worked with him ... and to this day, he remains as one of the most recognized and remembered players of the B western. Pretty good legacy.

Although he had an extensive film career, Renaldo would wind up being best remembered --- like Clayton Moore, Kirby Grant and others who moved from the big screen to the small one --- for his television series, THE CISCO KID.

He was arrested in 1934 for being in the country illegally and spent about a year in prison. His rescuer, according to the definitive book on the Cisco Kid (The Films Of The Cisco Kid by Francis M. Preparing for Wildfire Disasters

Summer and fall are peak fire season. Recent fires include the Nixon Fire in Riverside County, along with the Park Fire in Northern California. And most of us remember the Cedar, Witch, Cocos, Guejito, Rice and Lilac fires that devastated much of the county. Fortunately, important lessons have been learned.

We now have better coordination among local, state and tribal firefighting agencies. SB 816, a bill I strongly supported, allows state and tribal mutual aid agreements. Last year, the Pala Tribe, the bill’s sponsor, joined with the Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to create the first state partnership with a tribal fire department in California.

Cal Fire’s aviation program deals with thousands of wildfires every year. Their fleet of fixed wing and rotary aircraft is the largest civil aerial firefighting fleet in the world; even the most remote fire in the State Responsibility Zone can be reached in about 20 minutes.

San Diego Gas & Electric maintains over 190 weather stations that monitor high fire risk areas, generating modeling forecasts that anticipate the potential path of fires. This data is shared with fire county fire agencies and is also used to shut down

circuits to prevent fires resulting from downed power lines. More information is available here. And since the 90s when the Regional Communications System (RCS) was implemented, all public safety agencies in San Diego County easily communicate on a common frequency band.

Lots of information is available at Alert San Diego, where homeowners can also register to receive emergency alerts. Another great source of information are the County’s Fire Safe Councils -please click here. Still more information is available from Cal Fire at: Ready for Wildfire

We’re better prepared now, but we’re still just a spark away from disaster. As always, we need to plan and be prepared.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal highlighted California’s alarming rise in energy prices. They shared the story of resident Jessica Simpson Nehrer, who lives in Borrego Springs. She has seen her electricity soar to $1,873.90 in June, far exceeding her $1,200 rent and around double what it was two summers ago.

According to U.S. News & World Report, San Diego was named the Most Expensive Place to Live last year. We all feel the pinch of this every single day. California is also neck and neck with Hawaii for the most expensive gas prices in the nation.

It doesn’t need to be this way. These issues are policy driven. Local and state politicians must hear from us and understand that their policies harm most people.

In the case of electricity, our transition from reliable energy sources has been too rapid, moving towards options that produce less electricity. We need a balanced energy grid that invests in the future, whether hydrogen, nuclear, or solar power, but also doesn’t crush San Diegans with high prices.

In other areas, the government must get out of the way. Continuing to raise the gas price in California, once again with another tax early this summer, only pushes the burden on working families and seniors on fixed incomes. When it comes to building, government costs and fees make housing unaf-

is Travel safe This fall

Like many Americans, I’m traveling this fall. And like many Americans, I’m wondering: Is it safe to travel this fall?

It all depends, experts say.

“This fall, there are a few things travelers should be concerned about from a safety standpoint,” notes John Gobbels, chief operating officer of Medjet.

For example:

Have you seen the “TOURISTS GO HOME” signs in Europe this summer? Some popular destinations are slamming the door in our faces, fearful that too many tourists will destroy their cities.

It’s a valid concern, but you don’t want to be caught in the middle of that.

Instability is on the rise. The wars in the Middle East and Ukraine are more complicated than ever and unlikely to be resolved by this fall. In fact, the war in Gaza is threatening to spread to other parts of the region, potentially complicating travel to destinations now considered safe.

The U.S. elections aren’t helping. This presidential race may be the most contentious one in recent memory, which could affect your safety. “Americans should be mindful of local feelings toward them, and have a plan if negative

sentiments actually start to feel threatening to their safety,” says Gobbels.

In other words, if you’re taking a short, domestic trip, there’s nothing extraordinary awaiting you. But if you’re going abroad, things may get interesting this fall.

“It’s going to be a relatively normal travel pattern,” says John Rose, chief risk and security officer for ALTOUR, a travel management company. But you will still need to take some precautions.

Here’s where I’m headed this fall -- and why I’m a little nervous

I’m on the road 365 days a year,

fordable for most families.

Take, for example, the impact of the state’s regulatory environment on small businesses. The cost of compliance with myriad regulations— from labor laws to environmental mandates—has driven many small business owners to the brink of closure. This not only stifles entrepreneurship but also reduces job opportunities for residents.

Moreover, the bureaucratic red tape involved in getting permits for home renovations or new construction projects is another area where government regulation hurts families.

The lengthy and expensive process delays projects and drives up costs, making it harder for families to improve their homes or move into new ones.

We need our politicians to prioritize practical solutions over extreme regulations.

A balanced approach that considers the immediate needs of residents while planning for a sustainable future is crucial. It’s time for local and state leaders to listen to their constituents and make changes that will benefit everyone in San Diego and beyond.

which means I think about travel safety constantly. I’m planning to be in several destinations this fall and frankly, I’m a little worried. Here’s what I’m doing to stay safe:

I’m starting my itinerary in Dublin, which has a fairly good reputation for safety -- although there are parts of the city that I would be wise to avoid. I plan to spend most of my time working in my apartment and sightseeing in all the popular attractions. Tourist traps with lots of foreign visitors can be scary because they attract petty thieves and criminals, so careful

Harry S. Truman was elected Franklin Roosvelt’s vice president in the election of 1944 ... that was 80 years ago. Truman took office in January of 1945 – less than three months later FDR was dead and Truman was moved into the White House. Truman became known as “His Accidentcy” among those of his detractors, and there were quite a large number.

He started his political career as a Missouri county judge (supervisor) and because of questionable support from a Kansas City political boss, there always was a bit of a cloud over his head. In 1935, Truman ascended to the U.S. Senate and a decade later he found himself in the White House.

planning is a must.

I’ll also be in Istanbul -- a city with a reasonable safety record unless you are stupid. And by “stupid” I mean accepting an invitation to a bar from a friendly stranger and then getting suckered into buying overpriced drinks, which is a well-known scam. I’m also wary of discussing politics and religion of any kind in Turkey. If I keep my head down, I should be absolutely fine.

My final stop this fall is Doha, Qatar. I visited this place during the pandemic, just as it was gearing up to the World Cup, and I found that it was one of the safest places on the planet. I will be there during the U.S. presidential election, and I have promised myself that if asked about Trump or Harris, I will immediately change the subject to the weather.

So when it comes to safety, I’m right there with you. And I’m a little worried, too.

Pro advice for staying safe

When You Travel This fall

You can avoid dangerous situations this fall by following these simple tips from security experts.

Historically Speaking

Harry Truman – His ‘accidentcy’

Truman’s background is rich in history – too much for this small space. There are six major points to know about this Missouri farmer.

• He was a captain of a U.S. Army field artillery unit during World War I

• His first success in elective office as a county judge (supervisor).

• His momentous decision to drop the atom bomb ending World War II.

• His organizational skills in feeding Europe and forming the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

• He authorized the troop commitment in the Korean war.

• He introduced civil rights and integrated the Armed Forces.

Truman probably wouldn’t have succeeded had it not been for the financial backing, advice and encouragement of KC political boss Tom Pendergast. There’s no indication he ever accepted anything but above-board advice and financial support for campaigning. Still, his friendship with the Kansas City political boss followed Truman right into the White House.

Research YourDestination Very Carefully

Don’t book a trip somewhere without doing your homework, even if you’ve been there many times. Things change, says Jeremy Murchland, CEO of Seven Corners. “Something that should be top of mind for every savvy traveler is what is happening politically at your destination,” he adds. “From overtourism protests to election cycles to labor strikes, current events can impact your ability to travel. In extreme circumstances, they also can put you at higher risk than normal.” Seven Corners has been monitoring the security situation, and Murchland says he’s noticed an increase in tensions heading into the fall travel season.

Make A Plan And Follow It

Once you know what potential dangers you face, you’ll need to come up with a plan, according to Carrie Hartman, president of the global business travel and relocation platform 3Sixty. For example, consider this fall’s predicted hyperactive hurricane season. “Having an emergency plan in place -- including knowledge of local shelters and emergency contacts -- can literally be lifesaving,” she says. Don’t wait until you arrive before

Elected a Jackson County judge in 1922, Truman had the responsibility of letting bids to contractors, not the least of which were paving companies. Pendergast owned a paving company and expected his friend to give him the nod. When Truman issued the contract to another company, Pendergast wanted an explanation.

“Your roads fall apart because of shoddy work,” Truman replied. “Farmers need market roads they can depend on.”

coming up with a plan, because by then it might be too late.

Stay Away From Politics

As tempting as it might be to talk about your favorite candidate, don’t. “The presidential election in the United States is looked at very negatively in most of the world, regardless of which side of the political spectrum you might fall on,” says Rose, the ALTOUR security expert. “Because of this, it’s highly advisable to refrain from any political discussions, especially about the countries that you’re visiting. Visitors can actually be jailed in some countries for creating a discussion on that country’s politics, especially if they consider it to be negative in tone.”

stay safe This fall

Bottom line: You can stay safe by taking a few simple steps -- and avoiding dangerous places. And there are also a few new tricks that will help you stay out of trouble.

“While it’s impossible to eliminate all risks completely, there are proven ways to significantly mitigate them,” says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA.

It wouldn’t be the only time Truman served as a watchdog for the taxpayer.

Born May 8, 1884, Harry S. Truman was the 33rd president of the United States from 1945 to 1953, succeeding office upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was vice president for not quite three months (FDR died April 12 1945).

Truman grew up in Independence, Missouri, and during World War I, he was sent to France as a captain in the Field Artillery. Returning home, he opened a haberdashery in Kansas City and was later elected as a Jackson County official. Truman was elected to the U.S. Senate from Missouri in 1934 and gained national prominence as chairman of the Truman Senate Committee aimed at reducing industrial waste and inefficiency in the early days of World War II. He caused havoc among armament manufacturers, exposing wasteful spending and shoddy production of weapons and vehicles.

Historically Speaking continued on page 12

Allianz has released a new version of Allyz TravelSmart, its travel app, that has dedicated safety alerts. Anyone can download and use the app, which also offers a hospital finder to quickly point you in the direction of a nearby healthcare facility, and a medical dictionary.

Also, if you don’t mind letting the government know where you’ll be, you can register for the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). It’s a free service that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. The State Department will notify you if there’s a problem at your destination and may be able to offer assistance.

So is it safe to travel this fall? Yes -- as long as you take a few common-sense precautions.

insects on Vacation

How To Spot Them And How To Avoid Them

Insects are coming for your next vacation.

They had it in for Richard Campbell when he checked into a small hotel in Italy’s scenic Cinque Terre area.

At 2 a.m., he awoke to the stings of bug bites on his arms and legs.

“I noticed a few bugs on the headboard and wall,” says Campbell. “It was bedbugs!”

If it seems like insect encounters with travelers are on the rise, it’s because they are. And the reasons are simple. Climate change is making it easier for bugs to multiply. Plus, more people are traveling.

“An increase in travel means an increase in bug encounters,” says Mike Bentley, vice president of training and technical services for the National Pest Management Association.

That’s especially true for bedbug encounters like the one Campell had. Last fall, there was a bedbug scare in Paris. Bedbug infestations have been reported in other major cities, including Hong Kong and Seoul, and on cruise ships. (Some insect experts say these reports are exaggerated and don’t suggest that you cancel your travel plans.)

But there are other insect issues that could affect your next trip. And if you are bugged on your vacation, you have rights that you need to know before you go.

What happens when you’re bugged on vacation?

Campbell, who runs an adventure tour business, is no stranger to difficult traveling conditions. But when he told the proprietor about the unwanted bug encounter the next morning, he didn’t know what to expect.

“They were horrified when they saw me and the bed bugs,” he recalls. “Almost immediately, the innkeeper started yelling at her husband. I guess she had told him that she didn’t like the last group of travelers -- and now look what happened. It was a bit like George Constanza’s parents arguing from Seinfeld.”

The owners went out of their way to fix the problem. They moved Campbell to a different room, laundered his clothes and gave him medication for his bug bites. They had the room fumigated the same day.

They also refunded his room and gave him 40 euros in cash to compensate him for the trouble.

“They also asked me not to post

a negative review online, since it would ruin their business,” he says.

He didn’t, but plenty of other people do. You can read their misfortunes online in places like the Bedbug Report.

Most people freak out when they see an insect on vacation. They lose their minds and make the most outrageous demands, like asking for all their money back plus reparations and an apology from the general manager. Sometimes they get it, sometimes not. But nothing makes people lose their minds like creepy-crawlies in their bed at night. Nothing.

What kind of bug encounters can you expect when you travel?

Bedbugs are hardly the only insect encounters you can expect when you’re on the road. Here are just a few ways travelers are getting bugged:

Ants. They’ve always been there, but increased tourism has meant the ants are more active because people are leaving crumbs in their rooms and rental apartments. I’ve heard about more ant encounters in vacation rental properties and apartments, although they can also happen in hotels that aren’t cleaned as frequently as they should be.

Bees. If you’re hiking somewhere, you might run into bees. They’re usually harmless, although I’ve had some encounters with Africanized honeybees on a recent visit to Barbados that would make you extra cautious. “If you step on a nest, they will come out in force to defend their home,” says Jeff Weinstein. a paramedic and a medical operations manager for Global Rescue. “That’s when you need to get away as quickly as possible. There’s a risk of a deadly allergic reaction to a bee sting.”

Mosquitoes. They’re not just annoying and ever-present in the woods and near rivers. Higher

rainfall means these insects are everywhere. “Mosquitoes are known for spreading diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever,” says Bob Bacheler, managing director of Flying Angels, a medical transport service. “They can also carry several infectious diseases like malaria and Dengue fever.”

Roaches. Also a favorite of vacation rentals, they have been popping up in all kinds of places -and making travelers wish they’d stayed home.

By the way, this is hardly a comprehensive list. Don’t even get me started on spiders. I’ll never forget the enormous tarantula I found in the kitchen of my vacation rental in Sedona, Ariz. I turned the light on and it scurried away.

The point is, there are a lot of bugs that can getcha when you’re traveling. And what are your rights? I’m glad you asked.

What are your rights when you find an insect during your travels?

Hotels will typically send you to a new room in a different area when you encounter bedbugs, says Keith Robinson, the vice president for pest control at expense management company Fine Tune US.

“They may also upgrade you to a better room as an apology, or refund your stay,” he says.

If you experience severe ant infestation in say a vacation rental booked through Airbnb or Vrbo, you may be able to negotiate a full or partial refund. I’ve personally negotiated refunds on behalf of customers through my consumer advocacy organization. But there are no published policies -- or even regulations -- that would require a full refund when you find a bug in your apartment.

The best advice, when it comes to your consumer rights, is to negotiate. There may be no rules for refunding a bedbug-infested rental, but there

are consequences. A promise to post your encounter online might squeeze a manager or host to fix the problem, but it’s always better to ask politely. If they don’t believe you, show them the pictures you took when you first found insects.

Pro bug Travel strategies

“If you want to avoid insects as much as possible, don’t go to beaches, lakes, or any place with water really,” says Dini Miller, an urban pest management specialist for the state of Virginia who teaches at Virginia Tech.

In other words, you might want to skip that airboat ride in the Everglades if you’re squeamish about insects. Ditto for the Caribbean in the rainy season. Insects live everywhere, so there’s no guarantee you’ll escape the bugs on vacation -- but you can make an educated guess.

Take a close look. “Inspect the area where you are staying,” says Eric Braun, a technical services manager at Terminix. “If you notice any activity, bring it to the attention of the front desk and ask to be moved.” Pro tip: Take photos of the insects before you ask for a transfer -- that way, you’ll have proof of insect life.

Keep a clean apartment. If you’re in a vacation rental, make sure you keep the place tidy, especially the kitchen. On a recent visit to Santiago, Chile, during the middle of the summer, I found the ants immediately attacked anything I left on the counter. Solution: Don’t leave anything on the counter.

Don’t take any bugs home. Remember, insects can hitch a ride -- and sometimes do. “When I arrive home I leave my luggage outside my house,” says Kathy Lopez, a frequent traveler and author from Prescott, Ariz. “I unpack my clothes, put them in a bag, dump them in the washer, wash and dry them before putting them away. I hose down my suitcase before I stash it and spray it with Lysol.”

If you travel, you’ll probably encounter an insect or two. Don’t lose your cool -- and remember that you have certain rights, even if they’re not in writing.

Be thankful it’s not snowing. Imagine shoveling snow in this heat!

Sleep and good food.

Two of the finer things in life.

Often, we take things for granted. Lately, I’ve come to appreciate a good night’s sleep. For the first six months of this year I had great difficulty sleeping, mostly because of a variety of health issues. It seems those health issues are now a thing of the past and I am feeling WONDERFUL!

For the past month I’ve been sleeping like a baby and having wonderful dreams. Don’t remember any nightmares - all just great dreams. Every now and then my dream factory brings back the memory of an old girl friend or two and, needless to say, they are also great dreams.

I am savoring the pleasures of sleeping well.

At the same time . . . the harvest is in! We’ve been stocking up on watermelons, cantaloupe and a special melon, “the Santa Claus melon.” It’s a seasonal specialty. Not sure if it’s available in the midwest or east coast or not - often it’s out of stock here on the left coast. An old girl friend introduced me to this melon and it is about the sweetest, juiciest, tastiest melon I’ve ever had.

When I sent an email to that old girl friend, telling her of my rediscovery of Santa Claus melons, she said I should also try a “Hami” melon. Shaped like a football, skin resembles a cantaloupe but is much smoother. She seems to know her foods so I shall go out today and scout out some of the specialty stores, like Sprouts, and see if I can find one.

Often, I’ve been disappointed in cantaloupes . . . you buy them, get them home, and they just aren’t ripe. They are edible, but not particularly tasty. Right now, howev-

er, that’s not been a problem. All of our cantaloupes have ripened and are juicy and tasty.

Another favorite . . . sweet corn on the cob. I’ve bought it, (5 ears for $2) - bring them home and prepare them:

a. Soak in water for a half hour, thrown them on the grill, with husks on. In about five-six minutes, they’re done (occasionally having been turned). Pull the husk off, douse with butter and salt and pepper - munch away!

b. Soak in water for a half hour, place in 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes. Remove from oven, cut off root end, pull husk and it slides right off leaving a tasty ear of corn just awaiting a slathering of butter, salt and pepper.

c. Remove husks, place on grill, turn four or five times within a 4-5 minutes span. Don’t worry about the char marks . . . they make it even more tasty. (Don’t forget to slather on butter and salt and pepper to taste).

You now have your assignment for the weekend. Acquire the above edibles and munch away!

I shall expect a written report by Monday morning.

Cheers!

The Pastor says Living Longer

“I never thought I would live this long.” How many times have you heard people say these words? What is it that makes people say this? It may be that they wanted to die sooner or did not have a desire to live so long. It could be that we are conditioned to die sooner. When the Social Security system was introduced in 1935, life expectancy was about sixty-one. The projection was that the retirement payout would more than cover the monthly costs. Alas, men’s average life expectancy age is seventy-four, and women’s is eighty. We also note that retirement facilities are filled with people in their nineties and even their hundreds. What has happened?

Is it the food we eat or the water we drink? Could we now be in a different atmospheric zone with climate change and not live with the same cosmic forces? Or is it that we don’t work as hard physically and thus preserve our mortal bodies? Then, we have the development of modern medicine, which often offsets the natural forces of aging, which leads to death. Environmentally, something is prolonging our life here on Earth.

Now, we go back to the original statement of living so long, which many find questionable. Unfortunately, for many, it is more of a problem than joy. Living longer often means running out of money, suffering the woes of old age with the loss of a spouse and friends, losing one’s eyesight and hearing, and the ability to drive, as well as taking care of oneself. Living longer is not seen as a blessing but rather as a curse. Is there something that can help those who are facing a longer life? Spiritually, I believe there is. It is to know that there is order to the number of our days of life. Somehow, in the plan of God, our days are numbered. Thousands of years ago, a man pondered the days of his life and found a truth that helped him face his questioning future. He claims, “And in your book (the Bible) were written all the days that were ordained for me when as yet there were none of them.” Psalm 139. Here, one can find comfort regardless of how long, where, and how one lives. Our days are numbered. The best way to work with this is not to try and outguess how long we will live but rather to live out one’s life with joy, responsibility, and gratitude for every moment we wake up to another day.

For the past several weeks the focus of this column has been on the rapid evolution of technology and its impact on Americans of different ages. What and how we do nearly everything has changed in a single lifetime. Communication, travel, entertainment, diet, health care and warfare are substantially different than they were when the oldest living human was born into the 20th century. The dramatic change in the way we live our daily lives is unprecedented in human history and advancing technology will almost certainly continue to accelerate change through the coming years.

The IW (Intelligent Web) was born in the first decade of this century and brought significant new opportunities in the way we gather, communicate and store information. Prior to the advent of the IW humans had to rely primarily on their internal memory and intellectual power when taking action

When people complain about the state of affairs for animals in San Diego County, their comments are usually well founded. But I remind them San Diego is ahead of most of the country when it comes to animal welfare.

One example is NBCUNIVERSAL LOCAL’S 10th Annual “Clear The

or making decisions. Mobile access to broadband Internet gave us 24/7 connection to mankind’s ever growing store of knowledge. AI (artificial intelligence) provided a tool to process the information. IW usage patterns divide humanity into two groups roughly defined by age.

Those twenty five and younger are DNs (Digital Natives) and those over twenty five are DIs (Digital Immigrants.) DNs are exposed to the IW from early childhood. They seamlessly incorporate the knowledge base of the Internet and the cognitive power of AI as an integral part of their own intelligence. DNs are a hybrid of their own and the IWs intelligence. By the time the IW became a reality in the 2007, the DIs had already established an internal template for cognition based on their internal data storage and intellectual assets. To DIs the IW is a valuable external resource for information and communication subject to internal cognitive review.

Both DNs and DIs use the IW extensively yet there are subtle but important differences in their usage patterns. DIs tend to use the IW as a resource to build upon their already well established internal data base. DNs do not have an established internal data base so they use IWs knowledge and AI as a substitute. They use the IW to answer questions, solve problems and store data to accommodate their own limited internal experience and cognitive resources. This has led to recent measurable declines in the IQs of young Americans. Spending half their waking hours connected to the IW has reduced their “face time” with real people and also led to a noticeable decline in social skills among the DNs. The “use it or lose

it” declines in cognitive and social skills may be mitigated by positive aspects of heightened IW connected functionality.

DIs lament the declines of social and analytical skills among the young DNs whilst DNs shake their heads at the DI’s stubborn resistance to embrace the full scope and potential of the IW. This is the 21 st century “generation’s gap” The DIs and DNs are not separated by any physiological differences. The difference between younger and older Americans is cultural. Younger generations here and worldwide are simply adapting their life styles to the evolving technological assets made available to them. DIs will continue this evolutionary process. For millennia our cultural evolution was strongly influenced by survival imperatives. We evolved physical strength and mental acuity to abet the survival of our species. Technology over time has gradually reduced the survival require-

ment for robust physicality. Even though physicality may no longer be a significant survival asset, we have decided that fitness and strength serve a positive purpose. Gymnasiums, sports, exercise routines and other physical activities are illustrative of our commitment to maintain our physicality. Technology dramatically reduced the need for individual physical strength and fitness as a social and survival imperative and technology is today threatening to reduce the need for mental strength and fitness. The ability to access and process knowledge and achieve solutions using the assets of the IW is a viable and energy saving alternative to the use of human internal cognitive resources. This seductive alternative to “using their heads” is already causing IQs to decline in our DN generations. Is this a problem? Do we need mental “gyms” to preserve our intelligence? I guess we’ll figure it out somehow. We always do.

NBC says this “Nationwide Initiative Has Helped More Than 1-Million Pets Find New Homes & Raised Millions of Dollars for Animal Welfare Since 2015.”

Here in San Diego County, Rancho Coastal Humane Society, San Diego Humane Society, and the County Department of Animal Services have been a part of Clear the Shelters since day one.

Also participating in this tenth CTS event are Chula Vista Animal Services, Friends of Cats, the Cat Lounge Rescue and Adoption Center, and Rescue Fenix.

It’s rewarding knowing we were on the ground floor of an event that saves lives. NBC / Telemundo reports “Since its inception in 2015, Clear The Shelters has helped more than one million pets find new homes and raised millions of dollars for participating shelters and rescues.

Why does this work? Our local NBC and Telemundo TV stations are already very pet friendly. During Clear The Shelters, they kick it into high gear with even more stories about animals and visits to shelters and pet adoption events. The shelters follow their lead. For example, Rancho Coastal Humane Society President and CEO Judi Sanzo says, “During the Clear the

Shelters adopt and donate campaign August 10th through September 10th Rancho Coastal Humane Society is offering special incentives. Adoption fees will be cut 50% for anyone adopting an adult dog, cat, or rabbit 6-months or older.”

Adopting a pet who needs a home is wonderful. Adopting it at 50% off the normal fee is even wonderfuller. (That’s a real word. I looked it up) If it’s time for you to add a pet to your family, visit one of the Clear The Shelters participants or log on to www.cleartheshelters.com.

some, and kept the name for his paint horse in the later movies and TV series. Pancho got a palomino named Loco. As with the Pancho character himself, the horses’ names came out of the radio series.

The final Cisco movie segued nicely into the TV series, which was shot in color (which would come in handy once color television came along). The series featured many actors and actresses previously seen in B-westerns, and produced 156 half-hour shows. The show continued even when Renaldo was injured during the fourth season in 1953-54 in a rock fall and hospitalized through nine episodes. The producers had Cisco wearing masks, disguised as a ghost and other gimmicks where they could use doubles.

They had Renaldo record his lines from the hospital, and inserted previously shot footage of him. The sixth season proved the final outing for the show, although it has been popular in re-runs.

Renaldo retired at the end of the TV series, and died in Goleta Valley Community Hospital of lung cancer at the estimated age of 76.

Despite the TNT-TV movie, Duncan Renaldo remains the definitive Cisco Kid to most of us.

Mack Brown

John Mack Brown was a real southerner, born in Dothan, Alabama, on September 1, 1904.

He was an All-American running back on the University of Alabama football team, and scored two of their three touchdowns in a winning effort against the favored Washington Huskies in the 1926 Rose Bowl.

For his All-American exploits on the football field, Brown was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1957, and the Rose

Bowl Hall of Fame in 2001.

After graduation, he tried his hand at coaching for a short time. He went to Hollywood and began doing bit parts around 1927 in silents. A good looking gent, Brown became a fairly successful leading man at MGM for nearly five years, appearing opposite such famous actresses as Mary Pickford, Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford. Brown’s first major cowboy role was portraying the titled gunslinger in MGM’s BILLY THE KID (1930).

Johnny Mack Brown made about 165 films during a Hollywood career that spanned about 25 years Johnny Mack Brown passed away November 14, 1974, due to a heart condition

Real name: Kenneth Olin Maynard 1895 - 1973

Maynard made big money from the mid 1920s through the mid 1930s, when his star was at its zenith. But he also had a lavish lifestyle and bought cars, planes, etc. He liked alcohol and cigars, had a quick temper, and his waistline expanded as he grew older.

His screen career lasted about twenty years, 1924 to 1944, and he starred in 80+ silents and talkies. But his primary work, in both quality and quantity, occurred during his first dozen or so years on the screen.

the late 1940’s, often going by the name of “Cookie Bullfincher.”

However, his most remembered roles include the stage driver in STAGECOACH (UA, 1939) as well as ‘Jingles P. Jones’ in the Guy Madison/WILD BILL HICKOK TV series of the 1950s.

Buttram was Autry’s saddle pal during his later films as well as Autry’s Melody Ranch radio program. He was one of the National Barn Dance performers during the 1930s, and ultimately went to Hollywood. In later years, he portrayed Mr. Haney on TV’s GREEN ACRES. He was also the founder of the ‘Golden Boot Awards’ which honors western film performers.

Buttram is identified in 18 films, and 17 of those are westerns.

Buttram is interred in Haleyville, Alabama:

Born in Illinois, he was a musical genius. He eventually met Gene Autry, who was then broadcasting on Chicago’s WLS Radio. They became life long friends. Both became very wealthy. Burnette, being a sidekick, was almost as popular as Autry, Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassiday.

In his later years he appeared as the engineer, Charley Pratt, on Petticoat Junction.

Historically Speaking from page 7

After their election, there’s only one recorded meeting between FDR and Truman. When he assumed the presidency, unaware of its existence, Truman was advised of the secret atom bomb, which was ready to be tested and used. He was told dropping the bomb could save up to 1 million American and Japanese lives. In deliberate fashion, Truman authorized the first and only use of nuclear weapons in war. It ended World War II.

After the onset of the Cold War in 1948, Truman oversaw the Berlin Airlift and Marshall Plan to feed war-ravished Europe. When North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950, he gained United Nations approval to intervene in what became known as the Korean War.

In 1948, Truman submitted the first comprehensive civil rights legislation to start racial integration in the military and federal agencies.

In 1948, Truman shocked the nation by winning the White House in his own right. He dealt with a lot of domestic problems, not the least of which was a national railroad strike.

After Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower’s electoral victory, Truman left office personally and financially broke. He always maintained: “If a politician leaves office richer than he was going in, there’s something very wrong.” At that time there was no pension for former presidents. Reportedly, Eisenhower pushed Congress to address that problem, creating a presidential pension to Truman’s benefit.

This is only a thumbnail sketch of Truman’s life. He was a poor farm boy with only a high school education, but he was wise beyond his years. He wasn’t afraid to make a decision, Truman had a slogan sitting on his desk that read: “The Buck Stops Here.”

The turmoil that has surrounded the White House over the past three decades have left a lot of pundits and taxpayers lamenting: “Where’s Harry when we need him?”

One of the best biographies is “Truman,” by David McCullough, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his 1,400-plus page turner, which is still available on Amazon.com.

The other stars

Yakima Canutt 1895 - 1986

Real name: Enos Edward Canutt Nicknames: “Yak”, “Yakima”

One artist the average movie-goer never really knew much about was one who revolutionized the art of doing stunts in the movies, Yakima Canutt.

Born in Washington state, Canutt became active in rodeos and wild west shows as a teenager. He picked up the moniker of “Yakima” during rodeo days because

MIGHTY MOJO

he wound up being billed as “The Man (or Cowboy) from Yakima”.

Canutt won the title of ‘All Around Cowboy’ at the Pendleton Oregon Roundup in 1917, 1919, 1920 and 1923.

Canutt met Tom Mix during these rodeo performances and wound up in Hollywood where he began doubling for various performers.

Canutt’s time as a Hollywood cowboy hero was brief as an illness or injury caused his voice to have a gravely sound, and this basically ended any thoughts of continuing his stardom when talkies arrived.

Canutt is credited with the development of the choreographed screen brawl (where, in earlier films, the hero and baddie threw unrealistic punches at each other and wrestled/flailed around).

The Canutt screen fight involved the positioning of the camera at angles to the participants (rather than straight on), and the camera would often face one of the brawlers. That camera angle gave the perception of bone-crushin’ punches landing on the jaw. Many writers and fans also note that Canutt did much of this development during his many appearances with John Wayne in the Wayne oaters for Paul Malvern’s Lone Star productions of the 1930s. Wayne and Canutt would remain friends for life.Canutt is best remembered for a stunt he performed during the Indian attack in John Ford’s STAGECOACH (UA, 1939) --- portraying one of the galloping warriors,

he transfers from his horse to the six-horse team, is shot, and falls underneath the fast-moving team and stage. He did the same stunt --wearing the black Zorro costume --- in the serial ZORRO’S FIGHTING LEGION (Republic, 1939).

In 1966, Yakima Canutt was presented a special Academy Award for a lifetime as a premier stunt developer and performer ... as well as creating the stunt profession and developing a variety of safety devices.
