• Feature Story • MRS. P’s ……. A TRUE “DANCING WITH THE STARS” STUDIO By Brian Weidenbacher

A

t Mrs. P’s Dance and Acrobatic Studio, children and adults can develop a strong technical background, as well as gaining the needed experience to perform in a happy, friendly atmosphere. The Studio offers a wide variety of classes on all levels of Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Pointe, Acrobatics, Lyrical, Hip-Hop, Modern, and Voice. The training needed is presented to the students by trained, responsible instructors that are knowledgeable, patient, and well-versed in their field. The name Pozzuoli is not merely just a staple in the city of Coral Springs, it’s an “institution of learning”. Joseph (Mr. P) and Rosemarie (Mrs. P) have been instructing students in the art of dance and acrobatics since Moby Dick was a minnow. Together, they’ve baptized their pupils with the talent and ability that can only be taught by “true professionals”. Mrs. P’s has showcased numerous dancers for the past 35 years, while the facility, instructors, and “end results” captured, go unmatched. The Ballet classes are Cechetti with strong nods to Russian and French accents. The ballet mistresses are well-versed in pointe, modern, and lyrical. With a variety of styles and teachers, all of the Jazz classes are ballet-based. Students are taught turns, leaps, and jumps, as well as the hottest Hip-Hop and Funk combinations. The Combo classes, for pupils 2 ½ to 6 years of age, offers sessions in ballet/tap, or jazz/tap in each discipline for half hour increments. Acrobatics are

taught to students from 3 ½ to adults, based on their individual skills and knowledge. Beginners are introduced to basic tumbling skills, while intermediate and advanced students are taught handsprings, aerials, and intricate tumbling passes. A spring board is used in the more advanced classes. Lyrical is a combination of ballet and jazz. It incorporates the stability of ballet with the raw energy of jazz. Contemporary music, coupled with strong emotional content, creates a very powerful dance form. Musical Theater introduces students to singing, dancing, and acting. The students are exposed to monologues, character pieces, and ensemble work. For the more advanced students, Pointe is offered. This is a difficult form of

dancing, with an extremely strong emphasis on body alignment and shear strength. Voice, is for student 5 years of age to adults. Certain exercises are used with emphasis placed on pitch, range, and pronunciation. Music styles range from Broadway “legit” to Pop and Country. Style, harmony, and live performance are worked on in class, as well as integrating music theatre, interpretation, and dance. The studio has produced performers that have become Heat dancers, Disney dancers in Orlando and Tokyo, dancers at Busch Gardens, Las Vegas, the Rockettes, Broadway Roundabout, Pal Joey. Performers have also performed in the cast of “Spamalot”, and “So You Think You Can Dance”. Currently, Sami Gayle, formerly a Broadway dancer, was in the Broadway “Grinch Who Stole

Christmas”. She also performed in “Gypsy”, an action film “Stolen” with Nicolas Cage, “Detachment” with Adrian Brody, and is currently in “Blue Bloods”, as Tom Selleck’s granddaughter Nicky. Mrs. P’s Dance and Acrobatic Studios doesn’t teach just dance. Additionally, they have a Teacher Training Program which has been immensely successful. Many of these teachers that have gone through the program, have become entrepreneurs in the dance school business. Mrs. P’s Broadway Dancers is a group of specially talented individual performers, split into 3 different age groups with 6 levels, ages 7 to 23. This exceptionally energetic, and talented group, are well-trained artists. The group has performed at the Boca Hotel, the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, the Fontainebleau Hotel, Doral Country Club, the Bonaventure Hotel, the Sonesta Beach Hotel, and the Poinciana Club to name a few. They’ve also performed on the cruise ship Discovery I with the “Tokens” and the “Crests”, as part of the Fort Lauderdale Spring Break reunion with Frankie Avalon and Connie Stevens. The time, care and attention given to each student, defines Mrs. P’s ……. simply stated, unmatched, untouched, and unparalleled professionalism. Mrs. P’s Dance and Acrobatic Dance Studio has three convenient locations to choose from ….. in Coral Springs, at 9631 West Sample Road (954) 753-5480 …… Boca Raton, at 23102 Sandalfoot Plaza Drive (561) 488-1961 …….. and Port St. Lucie, at 584 NW University Blvd., Suite 200 (772) 408-0567. Joe and Rosemarie would enjoy the opportunity to properly instruct your child with the knowledge and expertise bestowed on thousands of other students over the many years of instruction. Mrs. P’s …… not only offering instruction and training, but opening windows for future stars and leaders!

What Happens If You Do Not Have A Will Or A Trust?

R

By Alan Reinfeld of Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A.

ecently, there has been an influx of intestate probate cases into my office; so I decided to discuss intestacy. If a person does not have a will or trust, and they pass away, then the estate is called intestate. Intestacy specifically refers to a person without a proper estate planning document. If you are intestate, there are several possible scenarios which may occur. Intestacy mainly occurs when there are assets titled in the deceased person’s name which cannot be accessed by any individuals. This can be a little dry. Depending on whether you are married and have children, there have been recent changes in the Florida intestate laws in 2011. If you are married and: Spouse has no descendants, the surviving spouse inherits the entire estate. If all surviving children or grandchildren are of both spouses, and the surviving spouse has no other kids or grandchildren, the surviving spouse inherits the entire estate. If there are descendants of either the living or deceased spouse which are not descendants of the other, then the surviving spouse inherits one-half of the estate. However, if you are not married, then the estate falls into a particular order. I will only go through the first 3 orders of intestate succession, for a more in-depth look, please view Fla. Stat. 732.103. “To the descendants of the decedent.” This includes children of the deceased, as well as grandchildren. “If there is no descendant, to the decedent’s father and mother equally, or to the survivor of them.” “If there is none of the foregoing, to the decedent’s brothers and sisters and the descendants of deceased brothers and sisters.” And so on, for any more information, please view the statute. So what does this mean? Without properly setting out your wishes in a proper estate planning document, a disowned relative may have an interest in your estate. Whoever will manage your affairs after you pass away may not be the person you would have chosen for the job. If you wished to leave a gift for someone not in the intestate statute order, it likely will not happen. Sometimes, it is better to plan ahead, and avoid the complications or fighting that may ensue if your future is not properly planned and laid out.

• Government & City - Parkland •

Mayor Michael Udine’s Parkland Report

T

he big news that everyone is talking about around town is the Broward School Board’s boundary process. To those who haven’t been following, here is a brief update. Our local schools are ALL considered under enrolled right now by the School Board, except one, Heron Heights Elementary. HHE is over capacity by a few seats and Park Trails Elementary was under enrolled by almost 250 seats. So the Broward School Board placed HHE in the boundary process for the simple process of a boundary change to even out the student population between HHE and PTE. Please rest assured that all of the proposals presently in play, guarantee that ALL children currently in Parkland for school, will stay in Parkland for school. However during the process, the idea of boundaries in future years was put into play. Everyone is aware that there is more residential building going on in Parkland. We all see it. What people might not be aware of is that the City of Parkland cannot stop any building based on school concurrency. That decision is the purview of the Broward County School Board and they have signed off to allow residential building in Parkland, saying the schools in the area can handle potential building and the future increase in students. Their professional demographers use student generation rates and the

8

timing of new homes to determine if the area schools can handle the capacity. They have determined that the schools can handle the increased capacity. Regardless of what the School Board said, one of the things that Parkland did, as we were monitoring this future buildout was to make sure that the land developers did MORE than the School Board required. By way of example, the School Board required the new projects in the Wedge area to pay the School Board impact fees of close to 11 MILLION dollars (in land and dollars). These impact fees, by law, are supposed to pay for the “impact” of new students and must be used for more student stations, if necessary. Here’s where this gets a little tricky. Since the Broward School Board is saying the schools in the area are in fact under enrolled, they are not planning to use those dollars (which are by law, set aside to build new school stations) to build new schools or school stations in the area. They claim, per their professional demographers numbers, is that that schools in the area can handle the increase in students. Remember, the new homes will come in over time and not all will be sold to families with children. So as you are reading this column, you are probably saying to yourself: “what if the School Board is wrong; what if the present schools can’t

December • www.TheOurTownNews.com

handle the increase in students?” That is a fair and appropriate question. I assure you that Parkland has prepared for that contingency. Even though, Parkland, by state law, is not responsible to provide for school stations, we demanded that the developer set aside dollars that we put in a “Parkland Education Fund.” These dollars, almost $2 million at present, provides Parkland with the ability to DONATE (for free) permanent modulars (not portables) to expand the number of classrooms in our area schools. In Parkland, we did not want to risk the education of our children to the risks of overcrowding, so we prepared a “just in case plan”. Again, hopefully, the Broward County School Board has the ability to build a new school on the land set aside in Parkland, but if not, Parkland will be there to assist with more student stations, just in case! If you want to follow updates on this issue over the next few months, check out the Facebook page, ‘Parkland Unites for Neighborhood Schools’. he holidays will soon be upon us and I hope to see you all at our annual Holiday Parade on December 11 at 7 p.m. The parade will feature decorated floats and other entries along Sample Road from Coral Springs Drive to City Hall. The parade will feature The Jetsons, courtesy of Advanced Cable Communications. Please note that Sample Road west of University Drive and east of NW 110th Avenue, and Coral Springs Drive north of NW 29th Street and south of NW 37th Street, will be closed on the night of the parade from 5 p.m. until approximately 10 p.m. The parade will wrap up our 50th anniversary celebrations. It was a year full of celebrations and I hope you didn’t miss out on the fun. The 50th Anniversary events have been made possible through the support of our wonderful sponsors, which include: Al Hendrickson Toyota, Air Around The Clock, Baptist Medical Plaza at Coral Springs, Advanced Cable Communications, Broward Health Coral Springs, FPL, and Scott J. Brook, P.A. For information on the 50th Anniversary, please visit www.CoralSprings50.org. To find out about becoming a parade volunteer, call Volunteer Services at 954-346-4430. In case of inclement weather, the parade will be held on Thursday, December 12. For more information on participating in the 2013 Holiday Parade, call 954-345-2112 or visit www.CoralSprings.org/ holidayparade. In other news, bond credit rating agency Moody’s Investors Service has affirmed Coral Springs’ Aaa general obligation rating. Coral Springs is one of just two cities in Florida (Boca Raton being the other) and 22 cities nationwide to have earned a Aaa general obligation bond rating from all three rating agencies (the other two rating agencies are Standard and Poor’s and Fitch). The Aaa general obligation rating is based on the City’s reduced, but still sizable tax base, sound financial management practices reflected in historically strong financial reserves, and a minimal debt position with material future borrowing plans. Maintaining a Triple-A bond rating during these very difficult economic times was not easy but the diligent efforts of our City Commission working alongside staff made it happen. If you haven’t already, you should be receiving our new

Been Told You Need BACK SURGERY? That’s Not How We Operate

Finally, A Breakthrough in the Treatment of Back & Leg Pain and Sciatica Caused by Bulging, Herniated or Squashed Discs. In this doctor’s opinion, the best breakthrough treatment for serious back pain of our age is NOT surgery, but a non-surgical, safe and painless, state-of-the-art technology now available in Coral Springs A very well known surgeon told one of my very first patients...”That won’t hurt you, but it’s not going to help.” Those were the words of this well-known surgeon. He was referring to my new disc machine that reduces and eliminates the back pain and sciatic pain out of those with disc problems.

If you are suffering with back pain or sciatica pain due to a bulging, herniated or degenerative disc, this may be the most important article you read this year.

The Back Surgeon Was Dead Wrong! Lucky for my patient, he chose to take my advice. After a thorough examination, I determined he was a candidate for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. I recommended a course of treatments to my patient’s delight, the severe back pain he had been taking drugs for was going away. By the end of his treatment, he was totally pain free! He was pain free and off the pain medications for good. Do You Have A Disc Problem? If you experience any of the following in your back or neck, chances are your pain is due to a disc bulge, herniation or degeneration: • A vice-like squeezing feeling in your back • Sitting causes back or leg pain • Stabbing pain at the belt line or in your neck • Can’t turn over in bed without hurting • Numbness in your toes or fingers • Fire down your legs • Searing pain radiates into your arm • Prickling in your legs or toes Finally, Some Good News If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm/leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs, I GUARANTEE that you will be accepted for treatment only if I truly feel that you can be helped. Until recently, the only advice for many of you suffering in pain was to try what you’ve been told: • Try exercising • Try pain shots • Try physical therapy • Try dangerous back surgery • Try pain medications • Just live with it • Try muscle relaxers If you’re like most, none of these have worked for you or you are afraid of what could happen if you do try some of these. Exercising makes you hurt more, pain medications and muscle relaxers cover up the problem and give you side effects. Pain shots can cause more pain, don’t work or don’t last very long or FIX the problem, back surgery didn’t work or made you worse.

Caution! Decompression is DIFFERENT than old time traction or hanging upside down or inversion machines, which can make your muscles squeeze the discs even harder!

Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones that back surgery actually helped, but now the problem is back with a vengeance. Whatever your situation, you owe it to yourself to check into a Break through Computerized Non-Surgical Treatment for back pain and sciatic or leg pain caused by a bulging, herniated or squashed disc or discs. It has helped hundreds of people who were suffering just like you. This new treatment machine I’m callling my squashed disc machine. How Does This Machine Work? Haven’t you ever had the thought...”Gosh, if somebody could just pull me apart...I would feel a whole lot better.” I know you have. And it makes a bit of sense. Well someone else, actually a medical manufacturer, back pain specialists, neurosurgeons and engineers have come up with just that. A machine that gently pulls you apart, stretches the discs to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc (like a little vacuum in the middle of the cream filling) causing the cream filling to suck back in! In my clinic, I’ve treated hundreds of patients with nonsurgical spinal decompression with great results so there should be no reason your back pain should be any different. Actually, I’m so sure we can help you with your back problem. I’m willing to back it up...but not with hot air.

I GUARANTEE to accept your case only if I truly feel that you can be helped. That’s right. I can guarantee your acceptance because there are only a small percentage of people that we can’t help. And I’m not going to let you know why you’re not right for the treatment. Call our 24 hour helpline anytime. We can get started with your consultation exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more joyful life. Sincerely, Dr. Craig Kuhlmeier D.C. What Some Of Our Patients Who WERE Good Candidates Have Had To Say About Our Program: I have had low back pain since 1992. It would hurt like an “abscess” and go down my right leg to my ankle. It would hurt whenever I was sitting or standing so I would have to switch every few minutes. I didn’t want to have surgery so I tried decompression. I was hoping to have less pain and now I have no pain! If you hurt, don’t wait as long as I did to get help. I’ve never been to an office where I’ve been treated as wonderfully as I have by Dr. Kuhlmeier and his staff. Don’t wait. Go! Brenda Lee - Receptionist - Parkland, FL

• Community News • City Of Coral Springs Delivers Holiday Cheer To Families By Nicol Jenkins

T

he community of Coral Springs is once again coming together for the holiday season to help those lessfortunate families in your backyard. Celebrating 18 years in Coral Springs, the Giving Tree project brings together the local community to collect and distribute toys, non-perishable food and cash donations to those families in need in our City. Any extra items will go to helping fill the pantries at local churches and synagogues. “The City created the Giving Tree project in December of 1995, with the goal of providing food for families in need in our community,” said Maria Giacalone, Senior Community Relations Coordinator for City Hall in the Mall and organizer of the Giving Tree project. The Giving Tree is co-sponsored by City Hall in the Mall, Turtle Creek Wal-Mart and Advanced Cable Communications. Donations of food, toys and money will be accepted at City Hall in the Mall through December 17th. The annual tree inside City Hall in the Mall is made from cans of food and gifts donated by Wal-Mart and will eventually go to needy families in the community. Residents can see the tree and donations at the official kickoff ceremony, which will be held on Friday, December 6th at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall in the Mall. The need for food and gifts for the holidays continues to grow for our local neighbors in need. “Every year seems to have a greater need. Things happen to families during the year, and when the holidays

come around they really need the extra help. That is when we, the community, come together to provide the extra that they need, whether it is food items or toys,” said Giacalone, adding, “It is very rewarding being able to see that our community comes together during this time and that our local residents are ready and willing to donate and help their neighbors here in the City.” For more information on how you can help out with the Giving Tree project, call 954-344-1834.

• Community News • A MARINE’S STORY...SERVING HER COUNTRY By Brian Weidenbacher

A

fter completing an article last month about a golf event featuring our Veteran’s, I neglected to mention our country’s women that serve in our military. My apology is extended to every branch of the military where our wonderful women serve with duty, honor, and courage. An extremely nice young lady, by the name of Mylene Gibbs, brought this oversight to my attention. For those that know me personally, it was an unintentional error, as I possess the utmost respect for everyone that serves in our military. Mylene was born in Puerto Rico. Her father was a contractor for the Navy. She served in the United States Marine Corps from 1982 through 1986, at the age of 18. Following Basic Training at Parris Island, South Carolina, her military career took her to Georgia, Camp Pendleton, California, and Okinawa. During her training, Mylene was educated on the range. She could break-down an M-16 in 30 seconds, and put it back together in 29. “I was Honorably Discharged after 4 years, and I can honestly say those were the best years of my life. I have absolutely no regrets and certainly

no hostilities. It was intense training, but we were treated with total respect”, noted Gibbs. Her father was present at her graduation creating a lasting moment that she still remembers vividly. “He was my biggest supporter”, Mylene lamented. Now residing in Coral Springs with her family, Mylene is a Travel Advisor/Franchise Owner for Bolero Travel Cruise Planners. She has traveled the world, visiting practically every country, and reminisces about her time in the military ….. a life worthwhile, and a life well-spent. Congratulations are extended to not just Mylene Gibbs, but EVERY woman (and man) that serves, has served, and will serve, keeping our great country safe. Thank you from an entire nation. To you, Mylene Gibbs …… Semper Fi, do or die!

• Schools • Living in a technology rich world What does technology mean to you? Ask fifty people this question, and my guess is that you will receive fifty different answers. We all perceive technology differently. I for one love the fact that technology has enabled me to view information from around the world by simply looking up the latest trends on my local search engine, or better yet, have the latest information sent directly to me. The very premise of having a world of communication only a tap away from me at any given time has me hooked on technology. Tablet Computing for all of us Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last three years you all know about the revolutionary device that was launched in April of 2010 that has in essence changed the way we interact with digital devices, of course I’m talking about the Apple iPad . Not only did the iPad spawn a tablet war but it also gave us the “Mobile OS” (Operating System) revolution. Now I’m using my finger to surf the net, play words with friends, check on the weather, add to my calendar and tell the world what I just ate for breakfast. You have to love technology, ok maybe not the “what I had for breakfast” bit, but the rest is something that a decade ago we really would not have thought about as having access to on a personal device. Get back some battery life with IOS 7 Apple launched a brand new version of their mobile device operating system IOS 7 on Sept 18th, at the time of writing this article they are now up to V7.0.3, that’s three new updates in just over a month, whenever I see that kind of release rate on software one has to ask the questions. Did they release too early? Did they not do enough testing? Is the public being used as beta testers? My biggest gripe with IOS 7 is that it has killed my battery life both on my iPad as well as on my iPhone are some tips for extending that battery time as much as possible 1. Exit power hungry apps a. Double click on the “Home Button” to activate the multitasking carousel view and simply swipe these apps that you are no longer using away. In particular power hungry apps include apps like Pandora, I Heart Radio, Skype or your GPS app. 2. Are you in a bad cell area? a. Whenever your reception is bad your cell phone will be trying its best just to stay on the network, this in itself kills your battery life, you’d best help yourself by turning on airplane mode or turning off your cell phone while you are in the bad cell reception area. 3. Turn off Background app and content refresh a. This worked like a charm for me, it almost doubled the amount of time I had on my phone. b. Disable it by going into Settings / General / Background App Refresh

DANNY’S ……. NOT YOUR ORDINARY MEAT MARKET By Brian Weidenbacher

I

n 1975, owner’s Joe and Pam Grosso opened the doors of Danny’s Meat Market, providing customers with friendly service, an incredible selection of fresh quality meats, and value for their dollar. In 38 years, nothing has changed ….. except now the couple offers an array of freshly made sandwiches, quiches, assorted homemade stuffed breads, Italian groceries, salads, desserts, homemade healthy soups, pre-made meals, our own spiral honey baked hams, fresh turkeys from Virginia for your holiday meals, catering, custom gift baskets, cakes, various desserts, and numerous “Weekly Specials”. Did I say nothing has changed? The “Specials” offered range in price from $29.95, which includes cube steaks, chicken legs, ground beef, pork chops, ham, and hot dogs, to $54.95 entitling you to steaks, ribs, chicken, hot dogs, Italian sausage, pork cutlets, and a pork roast. Create your own sandwich from a wonderful selection of meats and cheeses, or pick

one of the many “healthy options” Danny’s has to offer. These days, price, quality, and freshness seem to be a by-gone commodity …… but not at Danny’s! As your eyes survey the wonderful assortment of pork and beef roasts, plump chickens, fresh turkey breasts, filet mignon, the ever favorite leg of lamb, beautifully sliced chops, and assorted mouth-watering homemade sausages, you will find it virtually impossible to make a wrong selection. Remember that kid in the candy store that was “you” ….. well, now you’re the “grown-up” in Danny’s Meat Market making better, healthier choices for you and your kids. Offering an assortment of “pre-made” meals, delicious homemade soups, hot and cold platters, cheese cakes, our signature tiramisu, and assorted cheese cakes (Italian, strawberry, cherry, blueberry and more). The “fish selection” includes lobster tails, shrimp cocktails, sushi grade tuna, and tilapia filets. Without question, Danny’s is in a class by itself. With the holiday’s right around the corner, Joe and Pam stand ready to supply you with all your holiday needs. Whether ordering complete Turkey Dinners with all the trimmings and desserts, or a beautifully designed gift basket for any occasion by Pam, Danny’s takes your worries and solves them in the tastiest manner. Not only can Danny’s Meat Market supply you with any desire you may have in the “meal or food” realm, but Danny’s can create the most beautiful designed cake for that special day. Having a party, or “get-together”? Call Danny’s and have them cater it. Party Planning is available …… Large selections of appetizers, desserts, personalized cake pops, cookie pops, cup cakes, edible arrangements, and edible centerpieces. Create your menu, give them a call, and rest easy. Joe and Pam have it under control. For any, and all of your food needs, pass by Danny’s Meat Market at 9813 West Sample Road in Coral Springs, or give them a call at 954-752-6290. You can also visit them on their website, www.dannysmeatmarket.com. You can phone in your orders and have it ready when you arrive. Danny’s Meat Market is open from 8:00AM to 6:00PM (Monday thru Friday), and 8:00AM to 5:00PM on Saturday.

As Archie Bunker once said, “Man was put on this earth to eat meat”. If Archie was still around, he would be at Danny’s Meat Market every day. Why do you think he called his son-in-law “Meathead”?

TAVOLINO DELLA NONNA ...GREAT FOOD FROM GRANDMOTHER’S TABLE

O

By Brian Weidenbacher

wners Ed Pozzuoli and Tom Gendusa have taken Italian dining to an extremely higher level, serving not only the finest food and drinks, but “old world cuisine with an eclectic flair”. The casual upscale dining and fabulous cuisine served at Tavolino’s, is unmatched in quality, freshness, and presentation. The servings at this nostalgic restaurant, are quite simply, the absolute best in the city and surrounding areas. Tavolino Della Nonna, meaning “Table of my Grandmother”, reaches and unparalleled comparison, blending Nouvelle cuisine with traditional Italian cooking, to establish a taste that goes beyond the ordinary. The restaurant itself is a mixture of elegance, charm, and “family-style” allure. “Nonna’s Room”, is like sitting at your grandmother’s kitchen during the 1950’s at Sunday dinner. Original 50’s table and chairs, along with a refrigerator, stove, sink, and other memorabilia navigates the mind to an era when life was simple, fun, and innocent. The nostalgic room creates a mental picture, while the food paints a vivid remembrance to your palate. “Weekly Specials”, depending on availability, adorn the menu. A creation of pasta stuffed with pears and cheese, covered in blue-cheese Alfredo sauce, is an appetizer that would be a chart-topper anywhere. Patrons ordering this fabulous appetizer, tend to scrape their plates to gain every morsel of this dish …… if no one was around, I would actually lick the plate. Whether ordering pasta,

chicken, veal, or fish, you can decide how you would enjoy it prepared. The Seafood Risotto and Blackened Grouper, with tropical salsa, is my personal favorite. After your dining experience, it’s time for dessert. Toss a coin on your selection as everything is home-made and delicious. The Chocolate Volcano, will leave your mouth erupting for more, the Tower of Cannoli will lean gently off your fork into your mouth, and Nana Rose’s award winning Ricotta Cheesecake will smoothly slide down your throat. However, with the great selections on the menu, the Amaretto cookies call your name like Dean Martin’s “olive oil voice”. The freshness and flavor of these cookies explode in your mouth, while sending your taste buds in ten different directions. Tavolino Della Nonna is open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Friday from 11:00AM to close, and dinner on Saturday and Sunday from 4:00PM to close. A private room is available for parties, events, seminars, meetings, and a catering and take-out menu is available. Tavolino is located at 10181 West Sample Road in Coral Springs. Call the restaurant for reservations (suggested) at 954-509-0046. For additional information and a tour of Tavolino’s menu and photos, visit their website at www. tavolinorestaurant.com. Tavolino Della Nonna ……. Great Italian dining, with Grandmother in mind! GG’s of New York Italian Restaurant and Pizza Now that’s Italian!! By TRISH GIANDO

s of New York brings back many wonderful memories of when I first moved to South Florida. The Delgardio family established their restaurant business in 1937 in Brooklyn, New York. The family opened the North Lauderdale restaurant in 1976. Today, I consider it to be an icon for this community. My husband and I were newcomers to South Florida back in 1977. We were homesick and because of our Italian descent, we found it difficult to find a “good” Italian restaurant. Alas, we happened upon GG’s of New York. The red-checkered tablecloths, excellent food and warm atmosphere made us feel as if we had found a taste of “home” right here in South Florida. Not many businesses in Florida remain at the same location for this many years. This is a testimonial in itself. GG’s is still offering the finest of Italian recipes, handed down from three generations in the Delgardio family and prepared with the same special care. As a family-run restaurant, they know how important family meals really are. My favorite lunch is the Pasta Faggioli – it tastes just like my Mom’s. Planning a celebration? Party platters are available, ideal for family style events or buffets. Their signature dishes are sure to please guests at any celebration. They offer lunch and early bird specials and a children’s menu. Beer and wine are also served. Prices are good, food is great and the service is exceptional. Check them out. GG’s of New York is located at 5440 N. State Rd. 7, North Lauderdale. 954-484-0400. Hours are: 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Open 7 days a week. Dine-in or take out. here is a really excellent restaurant at the far end of a shopping plaza, with a BJ’s as the anchor store, on Hillsboro Blvd. just west of State Rd.7/441. This unassuming location is not where you would expect to find one of the best restaurants in the area. Renzo’s Italian Restaurant Parkland owner Patrizia Furlan and Chef Giuseppe Carriero along with a gracious and friendly staff will give you as enjoyable a dining experience as you are likely to find anywhere. Here are a few recommendations for you when you visit. One of the Chef’s favorites is the Linguini Frutti Di Mare featuring shrimp and clams marinara. I got treated to a sampling of delicious dishes. The first was a real surprise – Calamari Steak on the Grill - Grilled calamari strips flavored with olive oil, lemon, a hint of garlic and white wine. The calamari had a charcoal grilled flavor and was firm yet tender – really nice on a bed of arugula lettuce. Next the Chef brought me Yellow Tail Snapper Origanata – it was perfectly cooked and plated with a garlic, butter and parsley sauce, lightly breaded with a side of grilled zucchini and red peppers. While focusing on traditional Italian dishes, Chef Carriero has focused on locally available items with seafood a natural. Next I sampled the Chef’s Sea Bass Livornese. It was served on a bed of angel hair pasta with a light marinara sauce and topped with grilled olives, capers and onions. There is no way I could pick which of the two fish dishes was more delicious. Noticing that I was trying different dishes, another diner, who was having Fettucini Bolognese, reported that it was the best Bolognese sauce she had ever had. This is a wonderful restaurant. It is upscale but family friendly. They have a summer special menu for under $30 a person for a complete meal. I finished off a great, really two meals, with some Tiramisu and an espresso. A visit to Renzo’s in Parkland will be one of the best dining adventures you have ever had.

S

ince 1991, Nu-Sushi Japanese Restaurant has provided Coral Springs residents, as well as patrons from surrounding areas, with the highest quality food, friendly service, and a menu that something for everyone’s palate. The “authentically different” style of cooking, and the varieties served, makes this restaurant unique and different. Owner/Chef Yuji Azuma has created a work of art at this fantastic establishment, providing his patrons with a dining experience unmatched in Japanese cuisine. The Sushi and Sashimi Dinners (served with Miso soup or salad), will suffice anyone’s taste. The choices are numerous, and the prices are quite reasonable for these wonderful dishes. Multiple “Daily Specials” also adorn the menu. The dining area is clean, the atmosphere is subtle Japanese, and the service is the best around. Appetizers from the Sushi Bar, as well as the Kitchen, will begin your meal tantalizing delight. Moderately priced selections created by Yuji are wonderfully presented and beautifully fashioned. In my humble opinion, the Ebi Fry, Yaki nasu, and the Beef Negimaki were outstanding. The Miso soup, or Seafood soup, perfectly compliments any of the delicious appetizers. There is also an extensive salad selection, and Thai salads. The Special Rolls category will certainly have you scratching your head to make a sensible selection. Every item listed, whether it’s Tempura, Tuna, Hamachi, White Fish Salmon, Smoked Salmon, Teriyaki, Eel, or Salmon Skin, will have you looking forward to your next visit. The Lobster Rolls are, simply put, a taste from the God Neptune! Stop by and select from the “Early Bird Menu”. Visitors can also phone Yuji, and inquire about the “Chef’s Choice”. Simply make reservations for this unique adventure, and you will be served Chef Yuji’s creation for the day. On the dessert side of the menu, my favorite was the Ice Cream Tempura. Born and raised in New Orleans, I imagined there wasn’t a dessert I haven’t tasted ….. until now! The Fried banana is in a class by itself. Nu-Sushi presents a nice wine, beer, and soft drink menu to compliment your meal from the beverage side. The Kirin Ichiban beer went well with my meal. It’s virtually impossible to make a wrong choice when selecting anything from the huge menu. Conveniently located at 1312 University Drive in Coral Springs, Nu-Sushi offers the finest, freshest, and tastiest Japanese food available. The restaurant is open for lunch, Tuesday through Friday, from 11:30AM to 2:30PM. Dinner is served from 5:00PM to 10:00PM, Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday, while extending closing hours until 10:30PM on Friday and Saturday. Nu-Sushi is closed on Mondays. olf is defined by its past and its future …… Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, and female golfers like Nancy Lopez, Annika Sorenstam, and Lexi Thompson. It’s a game of rich tradition, history, sportsmanship, and above all, talent. It’s a test, not against your opponents, but a competitive challenge featuring yourself battling nerves, weather conditions, endurance, and the ability to conquer them all. That, basically, is what the Dixie Amateur is all about. The 83rd Dixie Amateur gets under way on December 13th-15th, starting with the Senior Men’s Division. All three rounds of the “no-cut” tournament will be contested over the Heron Bay Golf Club. The Men’s Division, a four round 72-hole event, runs December 19th-22nd using a new format. Players will play both Heron Bay and the Woodlands Gold and Country Club. This Division will play 36-holes at the Woodlands, with a cut to the low 72 scores and ties. The final 36-holes will be played at Heron Bay. There will also be a two round consolation tournament at the Woodlands for those players not making the cut. The Women’s Division will be played at Heron Bay from December 17th-20th, with the Senior Women playing the first three days in a 54-hole “no-cut” event. First played in 1924, the Dixie amateur is one of the oldest, and largest, tournaments in Florida. This year’s event will feature 420 of the top golfers from around the world, grouped together in the South Florida area. The cities of Coral Springs and Tamarac are once again proud to host this prestigious golf tournament. From December 13th through December 22nd, the “future stars of golf” will be showcased in our area. PGA Tour players Hal Sutton, Andy Bean, Lanny Wadkins, Jesper Parnevik, Erik Compton, Brandt Snedeker, and Bruce Fleisher have all won the Dixie Amateur. Lexi Thompson, a local resident and LPGA Touring Professional won the Women’s Division in 2007. Last year’s Women’s Champion was won by Isabelle Lendl, daughter of former Professional Tennis Champion Ivan Lendl. “This year we have about 220 players in the Men’s Division, another 110 competing in the Women’s Division, and 90 in the Senior Division”, said Tournament Director Ben Derauf. “We have a very strong International field assembled with about a dozen countries represented”, he

added. Derauf is also Director of Golf at Heron Bay in addition to running the Dixie Amateur. “It’s like having two full-time jobs”, Derauf noted. Both courses are in wonderful condition. With great weather conditions appearing to be in the forecast, and a field of talented players, the 2013 Dixie Amateur promises to be an event you don’t want to miss. ClubLink, the Tournament host, has structured a tremendous golf tournament, played at two remarkable tracks. Partnership opportunities are also available for interested individuals, companies, and organizations. The Dixie Amateur is reaching out to the community seeking support to establish this year’s event as the best ever. With the assistance of local businesses and organizations, the tournament can provide the players with an experience of a lifetime. The majority of participating players and family will be stationed in the Coral springs area. Being contained is such a small area provides a great opportunity for nearby vendors and businesses to find a revenue spike. Since the bulk of the participants are staying in the Coral Springs and Tamarac areas, most of the attention will be placed on these two cities. There’s no better way of guaranteeing you part of the action than to join the partnership. The Dixie Amateur has devised a unique partnership structure allowing the event to recognize your contributions, at affordable pricing. Steve Buck, the Dixie Amateur Marketing Coordinator, would relish the opportunity to speak to interested parties and explain in detail how your assistance can be a major part of the tournament. There are a number of Premium Partnership levels that can financially promote your company or organization. For information about the Dixie Amateur, Premium Partnerships, ClubLink, and both of the courses being played, you can contact Steve Buck at 954-816-3688, or reach him by email at steve@dixieamateur.com. You can also contact the golf courses directly; Heron Bay is located at 11801 Heron Bay Blvd. in Coral Springs (954-796-2000), and the Woodlands Golf and Country Club can be found at 4600 Woodlands Blvd. in Tamarac (954-731-2500). The Golf Pro Shop at both locations can offer insight to any questions about ClubLink, the Dixie amateur, and the perspective courses. The Dixie Amateur ….. Not just a golf tournament, but an 83 year-old tradition of excellence in the golf world!

GOLF TRADER... ALONE AT THE TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD By Brian Weidenbacher

G

olf Trader has been a leading retailer in the sale of golf equipment since the store opened its doors in 1991. Conveniently located in the Fort Lauderdale area, your “gateway to golf in South Florida” is just a short twenty-five minute drive from the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport, and a relaxing fortyfive minute trip from the Miami International Airport. Golf Trader is the “one stop” golf store for out of town visitors, as well as local golfers trying to perfect their game. Since the new airline baggage restrictions have created traveling with golf clubs a difficult experience, not to mention the added stress and expense, Golf Trader has the perfect solution. If you, your family, or friends are traveling to South Florida, they can rent a set for a few days, or longer, for about the same price it would cost to bring their own clubs, without the inconvenience. In most cases, the rental sets will be better quality equipment than most people own. Taylor Made, Callaway, and Adams are just a few of the brand names in their rental fleet. Golf Trader can equip the beginner golfer, to the most advanced, with their incredible and diverse selection of both new and pre-owned golf equipment. Trade-ins are their specialty. A private, select area known as “The Club Vault”, features the largest selection of “close-out” clubs, and premium used clubs in South Florida. You can get the finest drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, wedges, putters, and complete sets from such name brand manufacturers as Titleist, Taylor

Made, Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra, Mizuno, Adams, and Ping at a fraction of the retail price …… savings to you, resulting in lower scores in your round. What ultimately separates Golf Trader from other competitors, is the friendly, knowledgeable staff greeting every customer that walks through the door, and the professionalism shown to everyone, regardless of their playing ability. The quality service, expert advice, and unmatched dedication shown to customers over the past 22 years, defines the “family” atmosphere in the store presented to the patrons. With over 80 years of combined knowledge among the staff, Golf Trader separates itself from all other competitors. Discover for yourself why Golf Trader is “not just another golf store”! Owner Frank Callahan has created a golf store that surpasses any that you’ve ever visited. The Showroom is stocked with every name brand golf club imaginable, golf bags, balls, shoes, and accessories that meet everyone’s needs. General Manager Bob Piana, makes sure that every customer is satisfied to the highest degree. Bobby’s golf background is witnessed in the passionate way he explains to customers how certain clubs, and balls, can affect their game. His knowledge of the sport is only surpassed by his love for the game. Master Club Fitters, Ty Cody and Steve Cymbalisty, are tops in their field. Using a “state of the art” club-fitting machine that breaks down

your swing, ball trajectory and flight pattern, swing speed, and ball speed, these gentlemen will advise you as to the proper equipment you should play with. Golf Trader has a knowledgeable, professional staff that offers quality service. The store possesses a full service repair shop, re-griping while you wait, a hitting area and swing simulator with updated diagnostic and video equipment. Golf Trader is an authorized dealer and club fitter for all “major brands”, with no “gimmicks”. oday, lawsuits are everywhere. Lawyers are awarding larger amounts of money than ever before. Homeowners, auto, and watercraft policies have a specific limit on the amount of coverage they will afford for a lawsuit, and if an unfortunate accident should happen that is your fault, do you have enough liability insurance from your current policies to cover your costs for negligence? Since no one can predict how much you may be sued for by an injured party, umbrella insurance is not just for the wealthy anymore, but a needed protection for every policyholder. Umbrella insurance is designed to give you added liability protection above and beyond the limits on homeowners, auto, and watercraft insurance policies. With an umbrella policy, depending on the insurance company, you can purchase an additional 1 to 5 million in liability protection. This protection is designed to “kick-in” when the liability on other current policies has been exhausted. In order to understand why we need an umbrella policy, we must first understand how our primary policies work. The liability portion of a homeowners or auto policy that pays for expenses, such as the injured persons’ medical bills, rehabilitative therapy, and lost wages due to the negligence of the at fault person. The liability portion of an insurance policy also covers legal defense if the negligence would happen to land the at fault person in the court room. After adding up all of the expenses for the injured party and the legal fees of the negligent person, the standard liability on your homeowners or auto policy is often not enough. A personal liability umbrella insurance policy can give you added liability protection without a large added cost. Depending upon each policyholders’ specific situation, the average umbrella policy will run about $350.00 a year. Additional liability insurance is inexpensive, especially compared to the added coverage one gains. Furthermore, liability insurance covers your non-business activities anywhere in the world. Having the added protection of an umbrella policy is coverage no one should go without.

Pasquale’s Pizza: A Slice Above The Rest By Brian Weidenbacher

O

nce you’ve taken your first bite of a Pasquale’s pizza, you instantly realize that every other pizza you’ve ever eaten has now become a distant memory. The freshest ingredients, taste, and quality of a pizza from Pasquale’s is unequalled. In September of 1988 George Marrone, Sr., with sons George, Jr., Mike, and Nick by his side, opened their first store at 10337 Royal Palm Boulevard in Coral Springs. Great food, service, and a friendly family atmosphere, prompted the opening of two more locations serving all of Northwest Broward County. In 2005, the family opened their second Coral Springs location at 5609 Coral Ridge Drive, operated by Michael Marrone. In the summer of 2010, the third South Florida location was established at 4690 North State Road 7, under the supervision of George Marrone, Jr. With a menu extending from great tasting healthy salads, to savory pasta dishes, calzones, pizzas, and zeppoles, Pasquale’s not

only offers great food, but unmatched service with a sense of gratitude to their loyal customers over the years. From the moment you walk through the doors at any of the three locations, you realize the restaurant is all about family and tasty food. Pasquale’s hasn’t forgotten what created its success and promises to continue the family tradition of serving the freshest prepared food at great prices. If alone or heading out with family for a nice, relaxing meal, Pasquale’s should be your next destination. Depending on which location you choose, ask to speak to one of the Marrone’s. Whether it’s George or Mike, you will immediately realize that you’re not just a customer, but a friend they haven’t met yet. Pasquale’s …… Not just your ordinary pizza restaurant, but a “slice above the rest”!

Gun World of South Florida... Helping to Protect People

G

By Brian Weidenbacher

un World of South Florida sets the standards when a civilian is considering purchasing a firearm for the safety of their own lives, as well as their entire family. Thoughtfulness and attention to detail must be the highest of priorities. Randall Waltuch, owner of Gun World of South Florida, along with his talented staff, focus their attention on personal protection taught the appropriate way. A retired police commissioner recently visited the store and gave the establishment nothing but high praise. He was quoted as saying, “I would love to have had some of these individuals under my command. It would have made my job easier.” Wonderful compliments from a man that spent most of his life in law enforcement. Classes in gun safety range from the Introduction of Handguns to Advanced Concealed Weapons and are taught in a premier state-of-the-art facility. The problem concerning handguns brings forth the ageold question... “How does the Police Department feel about citizens carrying concealed weapons”? In a recent interview, Lieutenant Joe McHugh of the Coral Springs Police Department, was quoted as saying, “My personal opinion is that citizens should have protection for themselves, their family, and homes. Responsibility in the use of firearms should be top priority.” Lieutenant McHugh also noted that, “If a civilian is carrying a concealed weapon and is stopped by a police officer, he should immediately inform the officer that he is carrying a concealed weapon and present proper identification.” McHugh also noted that weapons should be stored in a locked area and away from children. Also, verify your instructor’s qualifications before taking any of the classes. Officials of Law Enforcement have a more complicated method of training the police officers in the most advanced tactical use of weapons and do not hold classes for civilians. Officers in the Coral Springs Police Department have training as often as every three weeks. Gun World of South Florida sets itself apart from the others. Surrounding customers with a fully stocked selection of firearms, self defense products, and a knowledgeable professional staff to help with instructions and questions, Gun

World goes unmatched. Stop by and see for yourself how Gun World of South Florida can assist you with any needs you may have for self protection. Gun World... Helping you protect what matters the most. SAFETY TIPS for YOUR FAMILY: 1) Take ammunition out of the gun 2) Lock the gun and keep it out of reach of kids hiding the gun is not enough. 3) Lock ammunition and store it apart from the gun 4) Store the lock box or safe for the gun and the ammunition in a different area from where you store household keys.  Keep out of reach of children. 5) When handing or cleaning a gun, adults should never leave the gun unattended.

I

t is no secret that today’s home burglaries are a problem. According to data from the FBI 2012 crime report it suggests that we can expect 1 in Robert Zajic every 36 homes in the United States to be burglarized in 2013. Each burglary usually results in an average loss of $1,675 per break in. Statistically 34% of burglars enter through the front door and head directly to the master bedroom. The most common items in the master include cash, electronic equipment, gold, silver, jewelry, and guns. Other entry points include, 23% enter the home through the first floor windows, 22% enter through the back door, 9% enter

through the garage, 6% enter through other unlocked entrances and storage areas of the home, 4% enter through the basement, and 2% enter through second floor entrances. The next areas to be targeted are home offices and B2000009 formal rooms with A2000248 openly displayed valuables. Most of these items are easy to sell through pawnshops and flea markets or are easy to pass on through a black market type of trade for use in the perpetration of other crimes.

The misconception is that most burglaries happen at night because people falsely believe that criminals prefer to operate under the cover of darkness, whereas in fact they occur between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. These are the times people are at work and kids are in school. The peak time is 10 am to 3 pm. Homeowners are usually home after 6 pm and this significantly increases a burglar’s chance of being caught. great new store has opened up at 8055 W. age, a burglar will spend eight to twelve minutes in a home. The more difficult you make your home for burglars to enter the less likely they are to target your house. With affordable technological advances today it could possibly play a large part in the reduction of burglary rates throughout the US. This is why we suggest you invest and purchase a quality alarm system WITH a quality surveillance camera system. The best thing is to have one professionally installed so you know you are adequately covered. Some insurance companies will also give you a discount on your homeowner’s policy for having these systems installed. Alarm signs and (or) decals are also a great way to let potential burglars know your house is protected. Currently, data shows that homes without security systems are 2.7 times more likely to be targeted by a burglar. Whichever company you choose to purchase and install your systems, make sure they are licensed, insured and reputable. Make your home more difficult to enter by installing jams on windows, patio doors and deadbolts on all entry doors. Ensure that overgrown shrubbery is trimmed, and keep the outside of your home clutter free and make sure to lock your doors. On-Line Real Estate Search With public access to Real Estate listings via the Internet many buyers in this market c o n d u c t research on their own, and while a lot of information can be discovered on-line, the most essential details are often left out. Knowing how to decipher a Real Estate listing and what data to factor into your search may seem as easy at 1,2,3 – “I want 4 bedrooms, 3 baths…” – but in reality searching for the right home can be more of an algebra problem then simple math. Take these factors into your next home search and you just may master the equation. Active, Pending, Backup? Oh My! The number one issue I see, hear and read about regarding on-line Real Estate search is that a large portion of homes of interest are no longer on the market when requests to view are made. No one likes misleading information and this can often feel that way to prospective buyers. As many of the popular Real Estate search sites don’t show current “status”, a buyer is left with no other opinion then ‘here’s a great home for sale’. In actuality however, the home is no longer on the market or has been sold months ago! As We See It… Is Diagnostic Testing Really That Accurate?

I

t seems every time a client comes for help, a common complaint is that their veterinarian has run numerous tests, prescribed treatments and the works. Symptoms vanish for a while only to return, sometimes with even more problems. End result - it may actually be the tests! Look at how the system works. You visit the vet, they draw blood and give you medication based on the symptom. The blood is sent to an off-site laboratory to be analyzed, with the results in a few days. The blood test reveals a limited breakdown of blood chemistry with very broad ranges. These broad parameters cannot distinguish what is normal or abnormal because of the restricted information provided. An example, results can vary because of diet. Blood chemistry can vary greatly between a dog eating kibble and fresh food. Unless a nutritional evaluation is also provided, the results can be greatly skewed. A second component overlooked is the physiological condition of the animal. If the pet is stressed, excited, or even had a very recent meal, results can again be skewed. Another factor is the limitation of these tests. They don’t show most nutritional challenges, pathogens, or specific problems. An example, we may show an increase in white blood cells that could indicate anything from infections to cancers and a vast array of other challenges which can be misleading. Another question that needs to be addressed is the chemical values compared to previous tests, looking for changes and variations. Let’s say multiple tests show “normal” values but have gone from a low normal to a high normal. Without a proper comparison, we wouldn’t see a changing situation. We must understand that blood tests are an invasive procedure and while we view them as generally safe, side effects can occur. The same concerns are present with other diagnostic procedures such as x-rays, MRI, and various scans. While these procedures can be tools for specific challenges, they should not be considered routine. For example, we all know

the dangers of x-rays, yet most of the time, veterinarians do not consider the amount of previous x-rays that your pet has already been exposed to. The point is this, before agreeing to a full work-up of testing, ask what they are looking for and how the test can help in finding a conclusion. Also be sure to consider the possible challenges that this test could cause. We leave you with many more questions that should be addressed and that’s the way we see it. FAMILY - MIDDLE EAST - HEALTHCARE - FAITH - MONEY

I certainly miss my parents and grandparents especially during the festive season. Christmas is however still a fun time for me and family sending cards, gifts, playing music and also try to look at what is happening around us and what might lie ahead. There is not many good news around these days Some people are afraid and possibly losing hope, even some young people are committing suicide. Dr. Luke writing about a good news “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath annointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind and to set at Liberty them that are bruised. The Christmas story of hope to the world. Read more about it in (Luke 4:18) Also about the birth of Jesus in the new testament. Whichever holiday you celebrate have a good one with your family.
