Oliver Myrie (b.1978) lives and works in Old Harbour, St. Catherine. He began painting in 1995 as a student at the Old Harbour High School and professionally in 2008. Initially focused on realism, Oliver counts his love for nature, the sea and colorful images as his earliest influences. A 2000 graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Oliver was one of two final year students selected to study at the prestigious University of Contemporary Art in Pont-Aven, France in 2004. Oliver has participated in several exhibitions, including the 2017 NGJ Biennial Exhibition and has been consistently recognised as one of Jamaica’s outstanding young artists. In 2010 he was selected as one of 13 artists to participate in the Young Talent exhibition at the National Gallery of Jamaica. “Painting to me is a cathartic function. My expressions are responses to various stimuli absorbed over time: observing, listening, thinking, talking and feeling, to the point where there is an overwhelming need to release what has been built up inside. What follows is an automatic, almost involuntary, emotional and textural response to bring to life on canvas visions and emotions that are deeply
