I LOVE TORQUAY

Torquay is the largest and one of the most popular towns in the English Riviera. The 22 miles of coastline around Tor Bay brings over a million visitors a year to the area to sample the beaches or scenic coastal walks.

8

ilovesouthdevon.com English Riviera - Torquay

Torquay is an ancient hamlet with buildings mentioned in the Doomsday Book but it became more fashionable in Victorian times with visitors taking advantage of the mild winter climate and escaping the London smog. Now it is a thriving centre of arts, music, history exhibitions, historic buildings and authentic small museums. Fascinating places to visit even if by some chance, you were weatherbound for a week, you still couldn’t get around to see them all.

The harbourside and promenade is popular for evening strolls and during the day has a cosmopolitan feel with the pavement cafes and is a centre for watersports of all kinds. The outer harbour offers safe sheltered berths in the Marina.

A mile from the seafront is the famous Cockington Estate, a historic picturesque village complete with manor house, church, 460 acres of formal gardens and historic woodlands, and ancient village buildings and thatched cottages. The craft centre dating from 1679 is nowadays used by a wide variety of skilled craftsmen who are keen to allow visitors to watch as they work and hold various teaching workshops.

In Torquay there are plenty of opportunities to experience the peaceful rural charm of Olde England with the liveliness of the 21st Century.

ilovesouthdevon.com English Riviera - Babbacombe & St Marychurch

I LOVE BABBACOMBE & ST MARYCHURCH

Two miles along the coast road from Torquay Harbour is a gentle curving bay with the cliff top promenade of Babbacombe Downs.

20

At the northern end is located the village of St Marychurch; a village steeped in history but very much of the 21st Century. At the top end of the pedestrianised shopping precinct are two distinctive landmark and historic churches which can be seen from many parts of Torquay. St Marychurch is well-served with most of the High Street banks, a Post Office and plentiful 2-hour on-street parking. The precinct, with a small supermarket at each end and a great variety of friendly, independent businesses including a bakers, butchers, fruit shop, florist and wet fish shop is a delight.

ilovesouthdevon.com English Riviera - Babbacombe & St Marychurch

Award winning beaches, one with a funicular railway dating from 1926, lie below the red cliffs and offer great diving, sailing and swimming opportunities. The Downs provide a tranquil area away from the bustle of Torquay and breathtaking views across Lyme Bay to Dorset more than 40 miles away. Nearby hotels, guesthouses, bars, cafes and restaurants contribute to the relaxed and convivial ambience. At the southern end of the Downs the Babbacombe Theatre holds superb entertainment throughout the year.

There is a Mediterranean feel with al fresco dining at outside tables provided by the cafes, pubs and restaurants; perfect for meeting friends or people-watching. There are two major attractions here – the famous Model Village and Bygones Museum. Within walking distance are an 18-hole golf course, tennis and bowls facilities, peaceful parks and a great play park for the children.

Come and explore this unique spot on the English Riviera. You'll want to stay a few days - or longer. The welcoming owners of our hotels and bed and breakfasts will be pleased to look after you.

I LOVE PAIGNTON

For many years Paignton with its friendly convivial atmosphere and long stretches of sandy beaches has been known as a family holiday resort.

28

ilovesouthdevon.com English Riviera - Paignton

The waterfront is the focus of activity in this town. Watersports of all kinds can be experienced from the harbourside, and the beaches. Bordering the Green and esplanade are many hotels and bars offering fine dining, drinking and often live entertainment throughout the day and evening.

The famous Paignton Pier dating from 1879 has been modernised but still retains part of the original pier alongside modern upgrades such as the heated building and plenty of added attractions.

The Dartmouth Steam Railway runs for seven miles from the railway station in the centre of Paignton along the beautiful coastline to Kingswear where there is a ferry crossing the Dart Estuary to Dartmouth.

For the more energetic visitor the south west coastal path takes in the secluded coves and the headland vistas from Brixham right round Tor Bay to Torquay.

FOR DETAILS OF MORE BEACHES IN SOUTH DEVON ilovesouthdevon.co.uk

ilovesouthdevon.com Beaches

I LOVE BEACHES The South West peninsula is dotted by coves, bays and inlets which have been awarded Marine Conservation and South West Water Environmental Award status. In 2011 21 beaches were awarded Blue Flag status across the South West region, along with 16 Quality Coast Awards making the South West fortunate in having the cleanest beaches in Britain.

In South Devon 6 of the 19 beaches in the 22 miles around Tor Bay were awarded Blue Flag status - Oddicombe, Meadfoot, Preston, Paignton, Broadsands and Breakwater Beach along with Dawlish Warren further north and Blackpool Sands and Bigbury-on-Sea in the south. 10 Tor Bay beaches also hold Quality Coast Awards – Maidencombe, Oddicombe, Meadfoot, Preston, Broadsands, Ansteys Cove, Torre Abbey Sands, Paignton, Goodrington Sands and Breakwater Beach in Brixham. To the North, Coryton Cove, Ness Cove and Teignmouth Town Beach were also awarded Quality Coast Awards in 2011. Many of South Devon beaches can be easily assessed by road with safe parking nearby or via well used footpaths, others are only accessible from the sea. Some are quiet retreats and others are very popular with locals and visitors and have plenty of attractions and amusements on site. Dogs are welcomed on designated beaches or at designated times of the year - check the signage at the beach. Ensure that the Safe Beach Code is followed by checking the time of high tides so you don’t get cut off by incoming tides, lifeguard supervision areas, no swimming if red flag is flying, no diving off rocks and return any small creatures you find in rockpools. I LOVE BRIXHAM

Brixham, a town at the southern end of Tor Bay recently featured in the 2011 Sky TV programme ‘Fishtown’ named after the ancient name for Brixham harbour.

42

ilovesouthdevon.com English Riviera - Brixham

Nestled in the lee of Berry Head, a National Nature Reserve, Brixham harbour provides a sheltered safe anchorage for one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK. Consequently, the main sources of income in the town are the fishing and tourism industry. The day’s catch is sold in the new undercover fish market on the quayside and ensure there is a ready supply of fresh seafood for many of the restaurants and bistros in the area and also makes for an interesting visit.

The terraced fishermen’s cottages and narrow lanes remind visitors of a bygone age which is reinforced at the Heritage Festival towards the end of May where the modern and traditional sailing vessels such as the restored trawlers Vigilance, Leader and Provident are showcased.

Berry Head is noted for its Napoleonic fortifications and having the shortest, highest lighthouse in the UK. There are signposted walks and trails to follow which take in the spectacular scenery and provide an opportunity for nature lovers to observe the protected flora and fauna in the area.

The Western Lady provides frequent short trips across Tor Bay and fishing day trips and evening cruises in Tor Bay.

I LOVE SOUTH HAMS & DARTMOUTH

Peace and quiet unspoilt surroundings, a mild climate, rugged cliffs, sandy cove and estuaries all in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty South Hams has it all.

46

ilovesouthdevon.com English Riviera - South Hams & Dartmouth

The 350 square miles and 60 miles of coastline seem to have everything the visitor and residents could want. The market towns and main commercial centres of Totnes, Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Modbury dominated the area. Totnes on the River Dart has a fine example of the ruins of a Norman castle as well as 16 and 17 Century merchants’ houses and covered arcades (the Butterwalk). Every Tuesday Totnes residents and visitors dress in Elizabethan 1 costumes for the traditional town market.

Downstream the River Dart is Kingswear and Dartmouth. An area of elegant historical and architecturally interesting buildings overlooked by the Britannia Royal Naval College on the hill. A great variety of restaurants, art galleries and antique and gift shops fringe the bustling harbourside. Popular National Trust’s Greenway (Agatha Christie’s home) is open to the public from March to October with ferries from Dartmouth, Torquay and Brixham. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Further around the coast a salt water sea estuary is the great sailing and boating centre of Salcombe and Kingsbridge. The mild climate and sheltered position offer many unspoilt creeks as a natural habitat for the abundant wildlife and some of the best safest moorings in the area in the magnificent coastal scenery.

DARTMOUTH STEAM RAILWAY & RIVER BOAT COMPANY The Dartmouth Steam Railway & River Boat Company is investing in the future of steam travel in South Devon. A new station at Paignton is planned to open in April 2012. The building will be a mixture of new technology and traditional style, harking back to the days when steam travel was in its heyday. This project represents a ÂŁ1.2m investment by the company aimed at further improving the experience of the travelling public.

48

ilovesouthdevon.com Dartmouth Steam Railway Advertorial

Our Station Café and gift shop have been significantly increased in size to meet the demand for locally sourced produce and homemade cakes. Come and enjoy a cappuccino whilst the world goes by, soak in the atmosphere and let us take you back in time before we transport you to the medieval port of Dartmouth. Alternatively, plan your day adventure to include a boat trip, steam train ride and bus and we’ll work out an itinerary that will ensure you see the best of this beautiful area. We can give you unlimited travel on any of our boats, buses and steam train services for just £30 for three days - a great way to see the sights without the hassle of parking! New for 2012: We intend to bring into operation a platform at Greenway, the former home of Agatha Christie… what better way to start your visit to the crime writers house than by steam train and a short woodland walk, but be sure you don’t have any mishap along the way - bring your magnifying glass and deer stalker with you as you can never tell what you could get up to! I LOVE TEIGNMOUTH & DAWLISH

Heading north along the coast road for about 5 miles from Torbay you will come to Shaldon and then Teignmouth on other side of the River Teign estuary.

52

ilovesouthdevon.com English Riviera - Dawlish & Teignmouth

Teignmouth is an attractive seaside resort with a traditional Victorian pier. It is a working harbour with large and small ships entering and leaving the busy port and ferries across the estuary mouth to picturesque Shaldon village. Every Wednesday from May to September is 1785 day when the residents dress in period costume and have variety of stalls and activities in the village.

On the seaward edge of Teignmouth is the large open green space known as ‘The Den’. This is where most of the holiday activities take place. The nearby long stretch of sandy beach holds fond memories for many visitors in the past and is still enjoyed by holiday makers and residents alike. The coastline here is riddled with old smuggling caves and underground passages and the South West Coastal Walk along the cliff tops to the Regency town of Dawlish is the ideal way to enjoy the scenery. This area has one of the most beautiful scenic rail journeys as the railway hugs the bottom of the steep cliffs. Dawlish is full of interesting cottages, impressive villas and hotels, narrow streets and is home to the famous Black Swans. Dawlish Warren is a favourite holiday destinations with an award winning beach and 500 acre Nature Reserve which includes the Exe Estuary.

ACCOMMODATION QUALITY AWARDS ilovesouthdevon.com Accommodation Guide - Quality Awards

Quick Reference Codes

The national assessing bodies – VisitBritain, VisitScotland and VisitWales and the AA, assess Hotels and Guest Accommodation including Bed and Breakfasts to the same criteria and award a one to five star rating. Enjoy England professional assessors visit every year, carrying out a routine visit or an overnight stay in the serviced accommodation. On a visit they book in as a normal guest and test all facilities and services. A quality score is awarded with every aspect of the experience including the comfort of the bed, quality of the breakfast and dinner, the cleanliness and the warmth of the welcome. Places that make a stay special are awarded a high star rating and hotels and guest accommodation can achieve a Gold or Silver Award. The new Breakfast Award is awarded where guests are offered a quality and choice of breakfasts, and offer the service and hospitality according to the star rating of the accommodation.
