The opera takes place in the broadcast studio of WEZY and includes a flashback to a scene in a Parochial School. The Marketing Trio is amplified during scenes 2 and 6, but is not amplified in scene 9. Scene 1: The Studio (Intern, Engineer) Scene 2: The New Management (The Marketing Trio, Engineer, Announcer) Scene 3: The Second Caruso (Intern, Engineer, Tony Caruso, Announcer) Scene 4: Parochial School Flashback (Nun, Priest, Young Tony) Scene 5: Tony’s Mother (Tony, Tony’s Mamma) Scene 6: The Past is Over (The Marketing Trio, Tony) Scene 7: Maria Callas (Tony, Maria Callas) Scene 8: Eleven O’clock (Intern Engineer, Nun Priest) Scene 9: Spiritual (Nun, Priest, Intern, Engineer, Marketing Trio) Scene 10: The Final Duet (Announcer, Tony, The Dark Woman) *If feasible, the oboe and baritone saxophone parts can be split between two players. ** If necessary and feasible, the tenor saxophone and bass clarinet parts can be played by a single performer. Please contact the composer for the slight changes necessary.


Synopsis: The opera takes place in a classical music radio station on the last night of its operations. (At midnight the station’s new management will convert to an easy-listening format.) The station’s final program, “Opera Lover,” is hosted by Antonio Caruso, a failed tenor who has worked on the show for 27 years. The station intern and radio engineer try to comfort Tony for his impending loss. Meanwhile the new management plots its market-drive tactics aimed at the drive-time listener. During the final broadcast, Tony remembers his early dreams of artistic fame and success as the “second Caruso.” In his desperate state, Tony is visited by three ghosts or visions—his dead mother, Maria Callas, and finally a mysterious woman. ---Dana Gioia Performance notes: The saxophonists, brass players, guitarist, and keyboardist should have some fluency in swing and funk idioms. All of the players mentioned above except the alto and tenor saxophonists should also be fluent in classical style. The first trumpet, alto saxophonist, guitarist, and keyboardist are asked to improvise briefly in Scene 9. The string players, flutist, clarinetist, bass clarinetist, and percussionist participate in some of the “popular” idioms but do not necessarily need jazz or rock experience. The drum set player should be a fluent jazz and funk drummer. The keyboard player should have an acoustic piano and a standard electronic piano (Yamaha or Roland) with the following settings: acoustic piano, electric piano (Fender Rhodes style), church organ, jazz organ (Hammond B3 style if possible), harpsichord, and accordion. Ideally, the keyboardist doubles on real accordion (traditional accordion as opposed to free bass accordion), but an electronic keyboard substitute is acceptable. The number of string players on a part listed above is the minimum. More strings (except for the bass) can be added at the discretion of the conductor, but the electric bass parts should be played by only one player. Reminder: The Marketing Trio is amplified during Scenes 2 and 6, but should not be amplified in Scene 9. Dynamics in the instrumental parts should be adjusted to insure the intelligibility of the sung and spoken text. –-Paul Salerni
