* The first trumpet player may use a D instrument for higher passages (particularly from m. 110 to the end) if necessary. The third trumpet player may use a Bb instrument (or may alternate between Bb and C instruments) if this would result in a more focused tone in lower passages. Trumpet 3 parts in both Bb and C are included in the performance materials. ** The harp must be placed on the stage so that it may be heard clearly; this is particularly important for the glissandos at m. 18, m. 47 and most importantly in mm. 99-122. If it is not possible to bring the harp out sufficiently, a second harp should be used to reinforce only these passages). *** At least two basses must have a C extension, but it is by far preferable for half of the bass section to have one. If fewer than half of the basses have C extensions, dynamics in passages where they are required should be adjusted accordingly. If more than half of the basses have the extension, only half of the section should play where it is required. Under no circumstances should passages requiring C extensions be transposed and played an octave higher on instruments which do not have one.
