Cowboy Stampede: Rodeo comes to Payne County

The rodeo team led by coach Cody Hollingsworth loaded up its trailers for the short drive from the school stables to the Payne County Expo Center.

Last year, the team found that another school in its division would not be able to host its rodeo because their venue could no longer support the event.

Now, with adaquete space and a National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) scoring event open,

Oklahoma State jumped at the opportunity.

OSU went through a bid process and won thanks in large part to the availability of the Expo Center, said Steve Darmon, assistant dean of the College of Agricultural Science and Natural Resources.

Next, a team from CASNR began preparing.

They had to find livestock, rodeo clowns, announcers, concessions and competitors for the nine different events.

While the agriculture team handled that, the rodeo team was practicing and competing.

Most members of the team compete nearly every weekend. Each cowboy has to pay for his own horse, trailer, fuel, medical fees and entry fees for every competition.

They also attend practice four times a week while maintaining high enough grades and class loads to maintain eligibility to compete in NIRA. With more than 500 competitors ready to go, the rodeo kicked off with bareback riding.

Larrabe did her best in the breakaway competition, where she roped a calf and as it ran from her horse a small string broke off her saddle, ending her time.

She failed to make the top 10.

Saturday, all of the top riders rode back into the pin for the short round competition. Oklahoma State had one cowgirl in the barrel race competition.

Lauren Underwood raced around the three barrels set in a clover formation as fast as she could on her horse, Trick.

“It’s a passion,” said Underwood. ”It’s an adrenaline rush”.

As the weekend wrapped up and the belts were passed out, Hollingsworth was glad to complete a successful weekend.

He credited his success to the people around him.

Opening the door: Students share coming out stories Savannah Evanoff @SavannahEvanoff

The dead silence seemed to beckon brave students to walk to the front of the room and tell one of the most personal stories of their lives.

Their coming out story.

A coming out story, or coming out of the closet, is when a person tells others, typically those important to them, his or her gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender sexual orientation.

On Thursday night, students of different sexualities gathered in the Student Union to share their coming out stories and offer support for those who may be considering coming out of the closet.

Jordan Williams, a graphic design major, said her coming out story was complicated and all over the place.

“My mom took my phone one day and read it while we were sitting in church,” Williams said. “She goes on a total

rampage on me, screaming and yelling at me; just heartbroken that I am a lesbian, or (that) she thought that I was a lesbian.”

This event, among others, drove a painful wedge between Williams and her mother, making Williams question her self-worth.

“I tried so hard to make me the perfect daughter,” Williams said. “There are times when I think I am a failure to her.”

A common theme for many students such as Jesse Anderson, treasurer of Oklahoma State Queers and Allies, was coming out of the closet through technology, where cellphone conversations revealed their sexual identity.

“My dad sat me down and said, ‘Give me your phone.’” Anderson said.

“I had just kissed my boyfriend for the first time, and we were talking about it.”

Mitchell Meyer, a biochemistry and math junior, said his sister discovered the news by rummaging through his cellphone.

“I did not come out,”

Meyer said. “My sister outted me. I do not know what my plan was, but it was not to tell my parents about it.”

Jason Galicia, an agricultural leadership junior, attended Oklahoma State University to escape his problems in Puerto Rico.

His main problem was being gay and not being ready to come out of the closet.

“Coming out was forced upon me, and I fought it a lot,” Galicia said. “It is a thorn that is still there, one that I am slowly going to pull out. There are still conversations to be had.”

Although some stories were tearjerkers that rivaled the mourning of a death in the family, others were quite humorous and ended in the love and support of friends and family.

Connor Terry, president of Oklahoma State Queers and Allies, compared his story to a soap opera.

“Just like a trained actress, my mom busted into tears, and I thought, ‘Oh god, what have I done?’” Terry said. “I was like, ‘Really mom? As a

child my favorite game to play was pretty, pretty princess.’”

Kerry Waite, a zoology freshman, also found her parents’ reaction to the news a little surprising.

Waite came out by telling her mom that she and her same-sex friend, Jamie, were dating.

“She was just like, ‘Well huh, at least you can’t get pregnant.’” Waite said.

Jessica Ricketson, a marketing sophomore, mailed her parents a long letter to tell them she

was gay, waiting a long five days to hear their response.

“My parents were so not bothered by the fact that I was gay; they did not even call me,” Ricketson said. “They sent me a text message.

“I then made a Facebook status saying, ‘Yes, I am gay, and red is not my real hair color, so there are all my secrets in life.’

So, that’s pretty much it.

Despite the means of coming out, all stu-

dents received different responses from friends and family but ultimately seemed pleased with their response from OSU. “I am here getting an education and making a life for myself.” Williams said. “I have realized that I don’t need my mother’s approval. I am an adult now. Now that I am here, I realize I have a family right here in front of me.

OSU prepares for future parking inconveniences Kaelynn Knoernschild @kaelynn_k Finding a parking spot on campus is about to become even more difficult.

Three upcoming construction projects will decrease the amount of parking spaces available to students and staff. The most immediate parking modification will effect staff parking near the Human Sciences building.

With construction scheduled to begin in December, an addition to the building will eliminate about 130 staff parking spaces, said Steve Spradling, director of OSU Parking and Transportation Services.

“We made accommodations before school started to add more parking spaces in the Wentz Lane parking garage for staff,” Spradling said. “And, they weren’t sold out to students last year, so we felt like we could add more without taking away from the students.”

He said OSU added 60 staff parking spaces to the parking garage. In addition, 100 Information Technology employees — who park in

the lot near Human Sciences and are currently housed Whitehurst, Math Sciences and Scott Hall — will be moving to a new location just north of Hall of Fame.

The move will help alleviate some parking difficulties due to the loss of spaces, Spradling said.

Additionally, staff parking spaces near the Spears School of business building will be taken away because of construction set to begin in January.

“The business building (construction) is going to affect some, not a lot,” he said. “Primarily staff parking.

Don’t have a solution to that as of right now.”

Although construction work won’t start until next semester, Morrill Avenue will be closed for utility work between Hester and Knoblock Streets after the last home football game, Nov. 15, until the spring semester begins.

The university also has plans to build a new parking garage.

To accompany the new performing arts center to be built in the next few years, the university is constructing a parking garage at 4th and Ramsey Street.

The performing arts center will eradicate about 500 staff and green commuter parking spaces.

“We’re trying to prepare ahead of time for the performing arts center and construct a parking garage prior to losing all the parking where the performing arts center is going to be built,” Spradling said.

He said he estimates 600 to 700 spaces will be available in the new parking garage.

“We may lose a few spaces while we’re under construction, but not near all of it,” he said.

Along with the increase in parking spaces, students and staff will see an increase in permit prices.

Spradling said a price increase is necessary to compensate for the cost of the parking garage, which will be at least $10 million.

Spradling is working with long-range facilities planning to hire a construction manager for the project, he said. He said he hopes construction on the garage will begin next summer and estimates it will last a little less than a year.

The Bears fired the first shots, but it was the Cowgirls who clawed back.

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls came out after Friday’s win slow and timid.

Baylor attacked early and often, but the Cowgirls refused to allow a goal and had enough offensive punch to win, 2-0.

OSU coach Colin Carmichael said he knew his Cowgirls would need to survive the ferocious attack the Bears always put up.

“Baylor is a tough team,” Carmichael said. “They pose a lot of problems by the way they play. They are very direct, very physical, a lot of balls in the air.

“We told our kids you gotta fight, dig in and grind it out.”

Baylor won the first 20

minutes, and its all out attack forced the Cowgirls out of their game.

“I think that’s just what you expect when you play Baylor,” Carmichael said.

“You gotta withstand that first 10 to 15 minutes because you know it’s coming.”

The Cowgirls began to get chances to score with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Junior defender Delaney Kiely put the Cowgirls on the board in the 36th minute with a header off of a corner kick.

The Bears tried to even the score as they looked long downfield for the remaining 10 minutes of the first half. Oklahoma State led Baylor 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.

OSU defender Niki McKnight, who did not play in Friday’s game due to a swollen knee, subbed in midway through the first half.

“I felt good,” McKnight said. “I wasn’t supposed to

be back until next week, but I kept pushing them to let me play and practice. I was able to play some good minutes. When I’m playing I don’t think about the pain.

For the most part it’s just swelling.”

Baylor started out the second half continuing its aggressive style of play. But the Bears continued to attack the Cowgirls’ defense without success. Oklahoma State added to its lead in the 69th minute off a long shot by freshman Anna Beffer, who is tied with midfielders Allie Stephenson and Madison Mercado for the most goals on the team with four. The Cowgirls took the 2-0 lead and Baylor increased the already all-out attack. Baylor could not break through on the Cowgirls’ impressive defense.

Senior goalie Rosa Medina continued her impressive play, recording her sixth shutout of the season.

“We have really rallied, and our defense has been really solid lately,” Medina said. “The way Baylor plays doesn’t fit our style. I felt like they were waiting for us to make a mistake in the back.”

OSU’s win against Baylor was its eighth in its past 10 games.

Hill plays hero in Cowboys’ 27-20 win

Tyreek Hill flashed his dynamic speed when his team needed it most, returning a kickoff 99 yards for a gamewinning touchdown in the fourth quarter of Oklahoma State’s 27-20 win against Kansas on Saturday.

“It was something we needed,” said OSU safety Jordan Sterns, who watched the play from the sideline. “When they kicked it to him, I was like ‘They shouldn’t have done that.’ …

It didn’t surprise me at all when he took it to the house.

That’s what he does, the kind of player he is — explosive.

He’s big time.”

Add in Hill’s 97-yard return last week against Iowa State, and he becomes the first player in school history with a kickoff return for a touchdown in back-to-back games.

“Well, when he got in the open field, even when there’s people in front of him, it doesn’t matter,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “… He’s so much faster than anybody else. It’s just hard to corral him and kind of get a feel for the angle to take as a tackler.”

The deep kick to Hill came as a shock; Jayhawks’

special teams plan seemed to be focused on not letting Hill touch the ball for most of the game.

“He’s a very special player,” KU coach Clint Bowen said.

“We had for the most part attempted to sky kicks and punts away and keep the ball away from him. We felt (KU kicker Trevor) Pardula could have gotten it out of the end zone and get a touch back. … He didn’t hit that one obviously the best, and Tyreek did what he does. He turned out to be a pretty special guy in the league.”

His teammates recognized his desire to get the ball.

“Tyreek is a fierce competitor,” wide receiver David Glidden said. “We learned

that in the offseason and some of the things we did coming out here, I know he was getting a little frustrated that they weren’t kicking to him, but at the same time, I kept telling him, ‘It’s going to come.’ … It’s just great to see that he capitalized on the one they did give him.”

When the Cowboys called, Hill delivered. OSU had just blown the 20-7 lead it carried into halftime.

Pressure was on struggling quarterback Daxx Garman to get OSU the lead, but Hill turned that pressure into celebration.

“He certainly lights a fire,” Gundy said. “He returns (the kick), and now everybody’s excited again.”

Running back Desmond Roland, who supplied a block in Hill’s return, said he recognizes the spark Hill provides OSU. “He has an unlimited amount of energy,” Roland said. “It was just a great play.

He’d been wanting a kick return all game. He was getting a little frustrated that they hadn’t kicked it to him.

I’m just happy they kicked it to him at that time of the game.

“He’s so fast, the fastest man in the Big 12.”

As the Cowboys enter the second half of their season, they must face four ranked teams on the road. Luckily, those teams will always have to ask themselves whether

they should kick it deep.

Oklahoma State University offers many firsts each year to students from China to England who will call Stillwater their home because of the study abroad exchange program. In the

fall 2014 semester, 2,004 students from 108 countries came to OSU. Twenty-two of those students are from England.

Of the five choices offered by the exchange program, Marc Norris chose the United States because of its language.

“The languages are very similar,” Norris said. “Except for the fact I speak English and you speak American.

When people hear my accent, it isn’t long before they begin to try to copy me.”

Beginning their third year of college, Norris and aerospace major Edward “Eddie” Hommel traveled 4,584 miles to Stillwater.

“England is like here but rainy, and everyone is in a rush,” Norris said. “It’s a huge disadvantage that everything is so far spaced apart. But the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages.”

They left their galoshes, raincoats, and umbrellas in England. Here, they needed sun screen and a fan.

“My culture shock happened when I walked out of the airport and the heat hit me,” Hommel said. “It was like opening an oven. I’ve been here over a month and I’m still not really used to it.”

English colleges give students three-year time tables that lay out what

classes they take and when they take them. There is no changing a major, double majors or taking unrelated courses.

“The schooling here is much more flexible,” Norris said. “Homework is another huge difference. I’ve not had it for the last six years. We don’t do that. We just have one exam at the end of each year.”

Freedom to mix and match classes wasn’t the only shock.

“Everyone is surprisingly friendly here,” Hommel said. “For example, I was in line at Which Wich, and the people behind me said something funny, and I

laughed. Then they just said ‘Hey,’ and started talking to me. I quickly made friends with them. That wouldn’t really happen in England.”

Making Stillwater feel like home was hard when limited to only one suitcase.

Hommel was able to pack the necessities.

“I managed to fit my ukulele in the suitcase,” Hommel said. “At home I do busking, which is playing on the street for money, but you’re not homeless. I took it to an open mic night in the Student Union and played there. It was a good time.”

“I couldn’t fit my red electric guitar in my suitcase,” Norris said. “I probably shouldn’t say this, but I miss my guitar more than my parents.”

Outside of what they brought with him, Hommel joined clubs similar to his hobbies in Lincolnshire, England.

“At home, I did street dancing, so I joined the hip-hop dance crew here,” Hommel said. “I also joined the sailing club. We don’t have that in England.”

Staying connected to home has become easier with technology.

“Luckily, I have Facebook and can stay up to date with my friends,” Hommel said.

“And I’ve got Skype, so I can Skype my mom, when she can figure out how it works.

Across the Atlantic Ocean lay the comforts of home that can’t be replicated.

“I’m still in the honeymoon phase, but I miss hot tea,” Hommel said. “Not this blasphemous stuff you guys call iced tea. Some of my friends took me out and gave me that … I still have flashbacks.”

New food, new home, new classes, new friends, and new opportunities are just a few of the firsts exchange students will experience in their one-year study abroad program to Stillwater.

“I feel I settled in quite quickly,” Norris said. “Plus there are so many people and everyone is so friendly it is impossible not to make friends.” news@ocolly.com PAGE 7

Courtney Dike has two goals for the Cowgirls this season.

It wasn’t pretty, but Oklahoma State managed to notch two Big 12 home victories this weekend to improve to 3-1-1 in conference play.

After a 1-0 win Friday night against TCU, the Cowgirls defeated Baylor 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

“Friday night, obviously the weather and stuff was brutal,” goalie Rosa Medina said. “But at the end of the day, it’s whether you get a win or a loss. No matter how we get that win, I don’t think it mat-

ters at this point.”

The Cowgirls have scrapped their way to eight victories in their past 10 matches, which also includes a draw against top-20 foe Texas Tech on the road.

Oklahoma State has turned around what seemed to be a lost season after a 0-6 start, and the team continues to find ways to win and is now over .500.

“It shows we’ve toughened up,” coach Colin Carmichael said. “We’re able to grind out games when we’re not playing at our best or maybe when the other team doesn’t allow us to play at our best.

We’re really pleased.”

Oklahoma State is undefeated at home in Big 12 play, which Carmichael said would be a key to winning a conference title earlier this season.

The Cowgirls’ final home game will be a rematch against Bedlam rival Oklahoma on Friday night. The Sooners took the first round with a 2-0 win in the season opener.

“It’s very important, we’re 3-1-1 in the league, and we’re not talking about winning it at this point,” Carmichael said.

“But I think if we win Friday, depending on some other results, we might have that in our sights, but we’ve really been taking it one weekend at a

time just to get back on the plus side, so we’re going to enjoy this. Bedlam will take care of itself.

“It’ll be a big game next Friday.”

Oklahoma State sits at second place in the Big 12, four points behind conference frontrunner Kansas.

“The Big 12 games, they’re not always pretty,” Carmichael said. “We know with Bedlam coming up, it’s usually the same way, so you’ve got to have the ability to just fight and compete to win games. And we’ve shown that ability, so we’re happy.” sports@ocolly.com

“We have a long ways to go, but at least we’re leaving here with a win,” Gundy said.

If a coach says that about his team after playing Kansas, there’s something seriously wrong. And it was obvious watching the Cowboys on Saturday.

The offensive line allowed four sacks, and quarterback Daxx Garman was more often than not hit by one or more defenders and brought

to the ground.

The Cowboys averaged only 3.1 yards per carry, the third straight subpar performance against teams in the bottom half of the nation’s ranks in defending against the rush.

As for Garman, the deep ball might have finally lost its charm. He couldn’t get much going against the Jayhawks, partly because of bad protection, but also because of bad decision making.

When he decided to tuck it and run or went head-tohead with a defender for a 1-yard gain inside OSU’s 30, it showed how much further the inexperienced junior has to go.

The offense couldn’t score in the second half against Kansas. Let that sink in.

That forced an OSU defense that, despite performing high above expectations, is still a work in progress in the secondary to face the Jayhawks time and again as KU closed the gap.

None of this is to take away from Kansas’ performance. The Jayhawks seem revitalized under interim coach Clint Bowen, who seems determined to make KU football relevant.

But no team should have to rely on a kick return late in the game to beat the Jayhawks, even on the road.

Tyreek Hill wasn’t the hero OSU deserved, but the hero it needed. The hero it shouldn’t have needed in the first place.

Hill won’t be able to save OSU from the back half of

the schedule. The final four road games of the season come against teams ranked in the top-15. TCU, Kansas State, Baylor and Oklahoma are steps ahead of where OSU is at right now and will welcome an inexperienced group into environments much more hostile than Lawrence, Kansas, was.

And those two games at home? West Virginia isn’t the team that beat the Cowboys in Morgantown in 2013. It’s better. Texas proved in the Red River Rivalry that it isn’t a team to sleep on.

The point is, OSU got fans’ hopes up with its nearupset of the defending national champions in August.

Even in the wins against UTSA and Texas Tech, the

Black Greek organizations boast rich history Montinique Monroe @iAmMontinique

From the outside looking in, many people see hardcore stepping or hear vibrant chants, failing to realize the rich history and lifetime commitment behind black Greek-letter organizations.

Established during a time when African Americans were not given equal access to other Greek letter societies, BGLOs were formed to give African-American students brotherhood and sisterhood while attending college.

Today, BGLOs are making an impact on people in the U.S. and across the world financially, educationally, politically, socioeconomically and through community service every day.

Members of these historical organizations include hundreds of prominent entertainers, activists and athletes. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, tennis legend Arthur Ashe and Michael Jordan were among thousands of members in BGLOs. Members have also included influential politicians such as the first black congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm.

Oklahoma State University has six BGLOs that are recognized under the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Darius Jones, a NPHC graduate teaching assistant, said people seek assistance from BGLOs on issues large to small.

“Over history, our organizations serve to uplift our community,” he said “In a sense, kind of be that voice, like a call to action when issues arise.”

There are about 52 members in Oklahoma State’s NPHC, but Camille Adamson, President of the Theta Mu chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, said numbers do not limit the amount of work BGLOs do on campus.

“We are more than stepping, strolling and shouting chants,” Adamson said.

“We strive to continue the work of those before us by promoting academic excellence, hosting educational programs, serving the community and being mentors to students.”

Kristian Singh, president of the Zeta Theta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, said BGLOs allow students both Greek and non-Greek to realize their worth on campus. He said the influence of his organization on his life began way before he came

to OSU. “A couple of the main reasons why I wanted to join a black-Greek letter organization was because of the impact that it had on my life before I even got to college,” he said. “It was so many people that I grew up with who I considered role models who are apart of the organization that I am apart of.”

Dominic Hardaway, treasurer of the Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, said BGLOs strive to encourage camaraderie and equality for all.

Hardaway said the core of every BGLO is to serve the community.

“Whether it is actually doing community service, whether it is planning events to help educate or entertain the community, everything we do is to benefit those around us before we benefit ourselves,” he said. news@ocolly.com
