2013 E xecutive Summary The Orange County Marathon was established in 2004 by community and civic leaders to create a world class event and raise money for children’s charities in Orange County. The OC Marathon’s Foundation supports the Kids Run the OC Program and our mission to “Inspire Kid’s to Fitness”. Partnering with youth physical education and sports experts from the Orange County Department of Education, OCMF created the Kids Run the OC youth running program to help kids ages 5-14 get fit and adopt an active, healthy lifestyle through running, all while having fun. The program has seen huge gains since its inception in 2004 with just 400 kids. In 2013, the program trained coaches from nearly 70 schools and agencies and had over 4500 kids throughout Orange County training for their Final Mile all spring. A September 2013 Runner’s World Magazine article states, “Cash-Strapped school districts that eliminate physical education to focus on classroom learning might be doing students a disservice, suggests a study showing better test performance by fit kids than their unfit peers.” Since the start of the program, Kids Run the OC program has trained over 15,000 kids to finish their own “Marathon” and taught them valuable lessons in fitness and nutrition.

2013 Program Summary

The Kids Run the OC Program has been written in partnership and with the support of the Orange County Department of Education. The program in addition to running, includes various games which help improve speed, agility, hand/eye coordination, flexibility and overall fitness. Students from each participating school are led through the popular and fun training program at their school by an OC Marathon certified coach. All program materials and mandatory coach training are provided by the OC Marathon Foundation free of charge to any participating school. Upon completion of a 10-Week KROC Activity Card and Curriculum schedule, participants accumulate 25.2 miles and are ready to complete their “Marathon at the KROC Final Mile Event. The 10-Week program includes weekly Nutritional Challenges designed to promote and reinforce healthy nutritional choices through behavior modification activities to be done at home with the family, thus incorporating the entire family into the healthy lifestyle messaging.
