The Negro Spiritual Project—Recovering Honoring-Recognizing a Lost Art

An Invitation for Support from Dr. r Leel Leela Honeysucker-Mi ysucker Miller

The Negro spiritual, a uniquely American art form, is credited by some cultural commentators for the survival of African American people p p through g slavery, y, Jim Crow, racism and the civil rights struggle. It speaks poignantly of a people’s belief in God’s ability to protect them and propel them into a better future. Often, against all odds, the musical idiom known as the African American spiritual, gave those who stru uggled againstt injustice the faith and strength to keep movving forward. Recognizing the value of th he Ne egro sp piritual,no ot only to AfricanAmerricans but to the entire country, the PublicBro oad dcasting g System m (PBS) has invitedaforremost expert on the subject to create a docum mentaryse eries: The Negro Spirituall Project; A Lostt Art. Noted expert, Dr.LLeela Honeysucker-M Miller, is seeking the support of corporaations, civic organizations, churches, faith groups and progressive individuals for the producction of this ex xciting series. In it, she will guide viewers on an exploration into the roots of the musiic of the Blackk church and its role in helping African Americans restore and preserve e the dignity, vallues and pride of their forefathers.. The primary focus will be the orig gins of the Negro spirituals and theiir relationship to present day music and African n American life and culture, within the church and community.
