LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com A sign of an African proverb hangs in the kindergarten area of North York’s St. Wilfrid Catholic School. “If many little people, in many little places, do many little things, they can change the face of the Earth,” it says.

The proverb is a reminder that even the youngest students can contribute toward a collective responsibility to take care of the planet, principal Shawna Campbell said. It’s a message all St. Wilfrid’s students, from kindergarten to Grade 8, will be encouraged to keep in mind as they pick >>>’IT’S, page 24

and the Leah Posluns Theatre before the curtain fell for good five years ago. In 1974, several Yorkminstrels members started up the choir to give people who might not have wanted to commit to big productions a chance to still perform. The group rehearses weekly at Cummer Lodge and performs about 15 concerts a year at seniors’ residences, nursing homes, churches, synagogues, as well as for civic and private functions. The Show Choir has also graced the stage at Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Ontario Science Centre. >>>’IT’S, page 14

Caregiving tip: ‘Take care of yourself’

Food and financial donations still sought for spring drive North York Harvest Food Bank edging toward goal With North York Harvest Food Bank’s (NYHFB) Spring Food Drive set to wrap up April 30, donations are still needed to reach the goal of $60,000 and 60,000 pounds of food. As of Tuesday, 52,000

pounds of food had been collected and $41,000 has been raised since the drive started April 1. “The generosity of our community continues to impress, and we are very close to meeting our Spring Food Drive goals,” said Anette Chawla, executive director of NYHFB. “However, we need your last push of support in order to provide food to youth and families throughout the warmer months. Please

consider donating healthy food and essential funds today.” Donated food will go to a network of neighbourhood food banks, community kitchens, pre-natal programs for expecting mothers, shelters for women and youth, and drop-in meal programs. Monetary donations will allow for the pick up and delivery of food to more than 60 community programs across northern Toronto,

which includes youth homeless shelters, community art programs and campus food banks. Donated food suggestions include whole grains, highfibre, low-sugar foods, low sodium, canned or dried beans, olive/cooking oils, spices, and nourishing baby foods.

The Caregiver Show comes to the Direct Energy Centre on May 14 “The most important advice is also the most difficult, and that is, ‘Take care of yourself’.” T h a t ’s w h a t S h i r l e e Sharkey, president and CEO of Saint Elizabeth Health Care, believes. “Caregivers give so much of themselves, it’s important to recharge to allow them to continue to give. Time for yourself is important. It’s time you need to be the best caregiver you can be. I would also encourage laughter and fun – even when things are challenging, try to cherish the time, and treasure the tender moments you have together,” she said. Sharkey is among the speakers at The Caregiver Show, May 14 at The Direct Energy Centre. Visit the show website at www.caregivershow.ca for more information and to register for this very special free day. An estimated eight million Canadians are family caregivers. It’s not uncommon for people to care for family members or friends in short- or long-term need. In fact, it is so common we don’t tend to identify ourselves as caregivers. The Caregiver Show has three main goals: to provide

caregivers with information, to provide the opportunity for caregivers to network with other family members in the same situation, and as well, a chance for caregivers to get a little pampering. It’s absolutely free, and we suggest you register early to attend. Speakers at the show will include: • Teepa Snow, a highly sought speaker and an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. She has an independent practice in North Carolina. • D r. A m y D ’ A p r i x , co-founder of Essential Conversations Project, Inc., an organization dedicated to assisting families in having the key planning/decisionmaking discussions while honouring the emotional components inherent in these conversations. • Shirlee Sharkey, president and chief executive officer of Saint Elizabeth Health Care, a leading national health care organization known for its social innovation, strong financial performance and pioneering practices. Metroland Media Toronto is the founding producer of the show. If you know someone in the community who is a family member caring for a loved one, why not suggest this show? Presenting sponsor is Saint Elizabeth Health Care. Sponsors include downsizingdiva.com, Alzheimer Society and Community Care Action Centre among others.

ith the changing season, and a sense of renewal in the air, Torontonians are heading outside to clean up their homes – and their

city. This weekend, kicking off with corporate and school cleanup day on Friday, the city will be getting a good (spring) cleaning, at the hands of residents who want to make sure their city, their neighbourhood, and their own street are as pleasing as possible. These seemingly small actions by a group of residents helps build not only a sense of pride in the neighbourhood, but also a connection between those who live in it as they undertake a common goal. “It creates community,” said David Juliusson, program officer at Fort York National Historic Site, who is leading the cleanup of the historic site this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. “A lot of people in the neighbourhood are new... Something like this gives them a chance to meet other people.” our view What started in 2001 as a 20-minute cleanup initiative Small actions by amalgamated Toronto’s first mayor, Mel Lastman, has turned create strong into a three-day city-wide cleanup people get out of their communities where homes, grab a garbage bag and get working. The City of Toronto kicked off its annual spring cleanup campaign earlier in the month with the removal of graffiti, cleaning up garbage and hauling away debris from city property, which gathered over the winter months. Coinciding with Earth Week (April 22 to 27), the cleanups are happening across the city – from Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to the Beach, York to Bloor West. To see what cleanup projects other Toronto communities are taking on and tips on how to get involved, see our special feature at http:// bit.ly/1lxd5hY Not only do these cleanups make the city look great, but they bring out residents, students, businesses, organizations and community groups – many leading the cleanups, others joining in just because they care. These cleanup initiatives should be seen as just one of a multi-pronged approach to community building. Why not extend this kind of community exercise more often than once a year? You can find a community group / organization across the city. Look into joining one, and make a difference in your community.

Stanley Cup fever has a few side effects

W

e’re only a week into the NHL playoffs and it seems as if everybody is already hobbling around. I’m talking about the fans, not the players. The players are none the worse for wear. They’re not allowed to be at playoff at time. The fans, on the other hand, are plenty the worse. What’s more, they’re plenty the worse for simply watching and last I checked viewing was a non-contact sport. Talk about lightweights. Anyhow, what follows are a few of the most common ailments seen off the ice at this time of the hockey season. Twentydonitis It’s twice as painful as tendonitis because it affects both wrists at the same time. It comes from non-stop texting and tweeting – after every goal, every save, every shot,

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY pass, deke, hit, penalty, missed call, whatever. Especially after whatever. Cyberspace really comes to life after whatever and nothing is considered too insignificant to comment on during the first round of the playoffs. Onehundredandtendonitis That’s tweeting and texting just about phenomenal Colorado Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon. Heck, tweeting and texting about what he does on each shift is a serious workout Sighatica This affliction is currently reaching epidemic proportions. It attacks non-sports fans stuck sitting on the subway across from two rabid fans who

are babbling incessantly about the NHL playoffs all the way from Union to Finch or from Kennedy to Kipling, only to take the occasional break to gab incessantly about the NBA playoffs. Condo-malacia Another malady plaguing non-fans. This one affects people who live in a building in which seemingly everybody has friends over partying on the balcony every night before, during and after the games. Foot in Mouth Disease This is extremely prevalent this time of year. The team that you’ve been bragging about non-stop all season, assured everyone they would win it all and that you have also chosen in the office Stanley Cup pool is about to be eliminated after the first round. Oh, the humiliation. Face Plant On Deskitis

By far the most debilitating first-round playoff disorder of all. It affects employees who live in the eastern time zone and make it a point to see every second of every playoff broadcast – and the postgame shows, too, of course – including all the games on the west coast that go into overtime, no matter how many overtime periods there may be. The symptom? Your work shift starts at 9 a.m. and you’re out cold by 9:01 a.m. And to add insult to injury? Your entertaining snoring exploits are booming on the company’s sound system. Coast to coast. In Dolby Atmos. The only thing missing is the popcorn. Apparently that doesn’t kick in until the second round. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

Downsview Park should not be for sale

Staff photo/Lisa Queen

Toronto Councillor Maria Augimeri (York Centre-Ward 9), left , and Toronto mayoral candidate and former Downsview Park chairman David Soknacki attend an media conference on Monday in the park to promote the idea of turning the park over to the city and stopping further development on the site.

New worries sparked over plans for parkland LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com

T

wo new issues concerning Downsview Park have both reawakened community fears about the future of the park and renewed demands to halt impending development, York Centre Councillor Maria Augimeri says. “Downsview Park should not be for sale,” she told a press conference outside a developer’s sales centre at the park Monday. “It seems the federal government, all it sees is dollar signs.” Demanding the federal government hand over the park to the city, Augimeri pointed to two new concerns that have set off alarm bells in the community. The first revolves around reports of the

discovery of a memo marked secret from federal public works deputy minister Michelle d’Auray to former public works minister Rona Ambrose shortly after Ottawa put the park in the hands of Canada Lands Company in December 2012. The transfer to Canada Lands, whose mandate is to manage, redevelop and sell surplus federal properties, upset the community that had spent years hashing out a truce for the park with the former board of

directors. The memo indicates d’Auray shared those concerns. The second concern stems from Canada Lands recently approaching the city to discuss the plan that sets out development approved at the park, Augimeri said. “What we found out now is another leak. Today, we learned Canada Lands has been asking if the city is prepared to revisit the official plan passed at the Ontario

According to www.downsviewpark.ca Downsview Park, a former military base located in the centre of the Greater Toronto Area, is an approximately 231.5 hectares (572 acres) of land that sits on one of the highest elevations in the City of Toronto. Currently more than half of the site is a mix of public parkland, commercial uses and community services offering a diverse range of public activities and programs, with the remainder of the site anticipated for eventual redevelopment.

I want them to leave the park the way it is. – Franca Cimaicata, resident

Municipal Board,” she said. “This means, given the mandate (Canada Lands) has, that it is the real estate arm of the federal government, Downsview residents are quite concerned that they will try to reopen the official plan and bump up the densities. They already have permission for 10,000 units, 25,000 new people, here on this land. How much more does their greed call for?” Canada Lands is merely looking at the best way of implementing the plan, spokesperson Manon Lapensée told The Mirror. “(Canada Lands) discussed with the city our community consultation

program and how we are seeking stakeholder input on how best to implement the approved secondary plan,” Lapensée said in an email. “We carry out this type of consultation for all of our projects across Canada ensuring that the city is aware of our process.” Canada Lands was to hold a community consultation meeting about the future of the park yesterday evening. But mayoral candidate David Soknacki, former chair of the Downsview Park board of directors, said he shares Augimeri’s concerns that Canada Lands wants to investigate more development at the park. While the existing plan upset residents who don’t want any development at the park, it was eventually agreed to by ratepayers,

the Ontario Municipal Board, council and the federal government, he said. “My concern is that the document may be opened up again,” he said at the press conference. “Frankly, I say no. I was part of a document of which we were all proud. It sets out a very high standard, yet a standard at which the park is financially self-sufficient.” Resident Franca Cimaicata, who attended the press conference, said she is anxious about the future of Downsview Park. “Sure, that makes me worried,” she said. “I want them to leave the park the way it is.” Meanwhile, Augimeri has launched a new campaign called Set Downsview Free.

‘It’s 40 years of bringing entertainment to the community,’ says longtime group member >>>from page 1 New members must audition, and it’s suggested to come to two or three rehearsals to sing with the group before deciding whether it’s a good fit. Saturday’s concert will be made up of Broadway selections, old favourites and contemporary songs, said longtime Yorkminstrels Show Choir

member Sandi Horwitz. “We don’t stand there with a book,” she said of the concerts. “All the songs are memorized and there is choreography. Because a lot of us come out of musical theatre tradition, a lot of the songs we perform are from Broadway.” Saturday’s performance will include medleys from Jersey Boys,

the “golden age” of Broadway, and of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs. “It’s exciting, it’s great we’ve lasted this long,” Horwitz said of the group’s four decades together. “It’s 40 years of bringing entertainment to the community. We’ve forged wonderful friendships and we’re like a family. We just like performing, just give us a stage.”

Tickets for Saturday’s concert cost $15, and $10 for seniors and students. Underground parking is available and the church is wheelchair accessible. Tickets will be available at the door or can be reserved by calling 905881-1465. For Yorkminstrels Show Choir information, call 416229-9313.

Charlie the shih tzu seeks a friendly lap to cuddle in Little Charlie is a 20-pound, two-year-old neutered male shih tzu who came into Save Me Rescue from a home where he was not well treated or cared for. Charlie’s favourite part of the day is cuddle time on the couch with his foster mom. Although he has a mid-low energy level, he enjoys his walks and sniffing

lorraine houston critter chatter and investigating through the neighbourhood as he goes. He received an A+ report from his groomer for being well behaved and mannerly during his appointment.

Charlie can be left alone at home while his foster parents are working without being vocal or destructive. He currently lives with two Yorkshire terriers and gets along well with them. Having come from a volatile family life, he can be cautious when meeting people he doesn’t know and needs time to trust. His

foster family has been working conscientiously to help him overcome his fears and anxieties. A home without young children is ideal. If you are interested in knowing more about Charlie, contact Save Me Rescue at 416-278-3770, contact@savemerescue.com or www.savemerescue.org

care for. Often it seems when some of our local theatre groups are confronted with problems that threaten to overwhelm them they manage to pull the proverbial rabbit out of a hat and come up with a winning production. Case in point: Curtain Call Players were forced to make alternate arrangements for their spring show when a flood closed down Fairview Library Theatre. They were able to book The Al Green Theatre , 750 Spadina Ave., and managed to wedge their production of Young Frankenstein into its cozy confines. Mel Brooks created this musical based on his hit film comedy. It has a funny script and some tuneful songs. True to form, many of the jokes are

mark andrew lawrence front row centre older than Mel Brooks’ famous 2,000-year old man. The cast, under the direction of Keith O’Connell, commits to playing these weird and wacky characters, milking every joke for all of its comic worth. Glen Burgess leads the way with his often amusing reactions. He sings very well and moves with agility even when being upstaged by his monster in one vaudeville-styled song and dance. Ngaio Potts makes a welcome return to our musical stages with her zany take as the Doctor’s fiancée, Elizabeth. The other inhabitants of the castle – Igor, played by Russ

Underdown, and Frau Blucher, played by Meg Gibson – are also welcome contributors. Lisa Ferreira brings her own kooky charm to the role of Inga, the sexy assistant to the Doctor. And Martin Kelly serves up a brief but very funny cameo as a lonely hermit. Barry Flynn makes an impressive monster, generating howls of laughter with his performance of Irving Berlin’s Puttin’ on the Ritz. Young Frankenstein is on stage April 24 and 25 at 8 p.m. For tickets, visit www. curtaincallplayers.com or call 416-703-6181. Learn to save a life

Mercedes-BenzThornhill teams up with Heart and Stroke Foundation for the public on Sunday, May 4, from 10:00am-11:30am and 1:00pm-2:30pm. The sessions will be conducted by certified medical practitioners. For 2014, all of Mercedes-Benz Thornhill’s sponsorship dollars have once again been allocated exclusively to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. As a lead sponsor, they are dedicated to providing the community with the necessary training to increase chances of survival from cardiac arrest. Last year, Mercedes-Benz Thornhill trained over 150 community members in life saving Hands-Only™ CPR. Due to popular demand, infant CPR training has been added to this year’s sessions. Learning the skills is easy, and it could mean saving the life of a friend or family member. The Heart and Stroke Foundation encourages all Canadians to learn CPR. “The more people trained, the greater

the chance of keeping a person who is experiencing cardiac arrest alive until an ambulance arrives,” says Andrew Lotto, Manager, Resuscitation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Carlo Casbaero is helped by volunteer DJ Burshaw to pile up manure/compost into containers during the Community Environment Day held at Amesbury Arena on Saturday. In addition to the Clean Toronto events, there are a number of upcoming Community Environment Days in North York, including May 1 (Carmine Stefano Community Centre), May 15 (Donwoods Plaza), May 17 (Downsview Park), May 25 (Glen Long Community Centre) and May 31 (York Mills Collegiate).

in our school is to teach our students and staff about ways that they can have a positive impact on the environment,” she said in an email. “This covers many aspects of being ‘green’ including recycling, energy use, outdoor greening projects and examining our daily practices in our school and how some of these decisions may impact our planet.” Due to a scheduling conflict, the school will have

its clean up day May 2. “Hopefully, it will be drier and less snowy by then,” Jones-Shantz joked. The grades 7 and 8 students will clean up the school yard while the Grade 6 students will head into the Moccasin Trail Park in the valley behind the school to work on the community green space there. It’s important for students to clean up the school yard because they created much of the litter

there, Jones-Shantz said. “Hopefully, by spending some time cleaning up they will think twice next time they consider dropping their litter rather than going to the nearest receptacle,” she said. The most common garbage is disposable food and drink containers. “As a society, many of us don’t think twice about buying pre-packaged food or fast food,” Jones-Shantz said. “Avoiding pre-packaged,

single-serving food items is a place where many families could look to for waste reduction and save lots of money at the same time. It would also mean less for us to pick up in our parks and school grounds.” Schools aren’t the only organizations taking part in cleanup days. For example, the Bayview Village Association ratepayers’ group will be cleaning up the Forest Grove ravine between Page Avenue and Burbank Drive on April 26. This is the 12th year members have participated in the event, pastpresident Doug Stephens said. He’s anticipating this year’s cleanup may present extra challenges given the severity of the winter and the aftermath of the ice storm. Still, the group will do what it takes because it is dedicated to making sure the community is a place where people want to live and visit, Stephens said. “I think there is a certain pride in our community that forces us to go out and say, ‘We want to live here,’” he said. “It’s something we have done that benefits the community and something we will endeavor to do for a number of years.” We’ve got more. A TTC rider is said to have corrected, by hand, a typo on a wayfinding sign at Bloor-Yonge Station over the weekend. After a picture of the sign – which contained the word Southbound but missing an “h” – was posted via social media (http://imgur. com/2h8RoZ7), it seems someone appeared at the station, ladder in hand, and used a marker to make the correction. Spokesperson Brad Ross

TO in TRANSIT confirmed the correction was not made by a TTC employee. He apologized for the error and promised the sign would be replaced. transit Union critical of P3s The TTC’s largest union has a launched a media campaign critical of publicprivate partnerships, also

known as P3s. The funding model is widely applied when it comes to designing and constructing large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Spadina subway extension. Using P3s, governments tender contracts to private sector companies who are then on the hook for completing the work on time and budget. But the campaign, launched by Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) 113, alleges P3s result in private

sector profiteering at the expense of taxpayers and warns making more of use of them on projects such as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT will be a “disaster”. For more about the campaign, visit www.truthabouttransit.com work: Expect GO delays wgardiner

Premier announces GO express service to be made fully electric

T A BE

T A THE HE s Get u e t a b † e p to $650 in r for hig h-efficiency units

GO train service every 15 minutes will be faster than TTC for downtown commuters, Wynne says RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A transportation proposal unveiled last Thursday by the province for frequent express GO train service promises faster travel than the subway. If completed, the GO Regional Express Rail plan would expand GO train service from a commuter service limited to peak period trips to all-day, everyday service, making for a faster alternative to the subway and reducing travel times in some cases by as much as half, said Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. “This will be a faster option for those who are travelling in and out of Toronto’s downtown core,” said Wynne, who announced the plan alongside Ontario Transportation

Minister Glen Murray at GO’s Willowbrook maintenance facility in Etobicoke. “You can get to the station and even if you’re a little bit late, you know there will be a train coming by every 15 minutes.” According to the plan, the new service would allow GO customers to get from the Kennedy subway and GO station in Scarborough to Union Station in under 20 minutes at anytime, compared to the same route via subway that would take almost 40 minutes. Train travel from any Toronto GO station would be faster by at least eight minutes than a similar route on the TTC. The express trains would also be fully electric, said Murray, with plans to phase out existing diesel units

that currently make up the bulk of GO service. “Electric trains will run frequently and they will be moving people much more quickly,” said Murray. “There will be increased capacity and higher connectivity,” he added. Murray also said the UnionPearson Express air rail link service between Pearson International Airport and Union Station to debut next year will be a part of the service. Funding for the project is unknown, but Wynne said money would come from a recent $15-billion transit commitment to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area over 10 years. She also said Metrolinx was committed to introducing the service within the same time frame.

Potential high for a dull council What an upset it would be, if city councillor Adam Vaughan had his hat handed him in the federal byelection in TrinitySpadina. Anything is possible in politics. But in this home-turf byelection in a riding whose outgoing incumbent is busy with her own election, it’s hard to see Vaughan doing anything but winning – taking over Olivia Chow’s former riding the same way he took over her former ward in 2006. News of Vaughan’s expected Liberal candidacy emerged last week, after a meeting with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. In the Liberal caucus, Vaughan would take the lead on cities. No doubt he’ll also make an impression in Question Period. At city hall, Vaughan has been one of the more effective opposition councillors. It’s behaviour like that that has helped make the former journalist a very electable commodity in the downtown communities he represents – and less than that, across the breadth of the city – as became clear when earlier in the term

david nickle the city he was seriously contemplating a run for mayor. As such, his departure leaves an interesting-shaped hole in Toronto Council. It would be an exaggeration to say Vaughan’s departure could mark a return to collegiality at the council that has become the Road Warrior model of municipal government. But looking at the next term, there are going to be a number of departures that might just put the “order” back in Robert’s Rules. At least one Ford brother – Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford – isn’t returning for 2015. Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande, the former budget chief, is retiring. York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti is showing every indication of coming back for now, but he’s facing a serious court hearing about his election expenses that could derail those plans. If all those people go – well

of course we’ll miss them. The thing about outrageous characters like the aforementioned is they’re all eminently watchable, and therefore electable. What a dull and potentially productive council we could have at the end of 2014. And it would be interesting to see what Vaughan can do in Ottawa. As a councillor, his reputation for a sharp tongue is matched by his track record as a deal broker – getting as many concessions as he can from the various developers looking to plant towers in the downtown neighbourhoods he represents. Vaughan has a genuine expertise, won on the ground, when it comes to urban issues. If Vaughan does indeed win the seat, and Justin Trudeau does indeed win enough other seats to form a government, there’s a lot he could do in pushing the federal government into taking a greater role in urban life and infrastructure. He wouldn’t even have to be particularly nice about it.

‘Depression is a treatable medical illness’ >>>from page 1 strides towards her recovery and fully engaged in life again, she is helping to fund a new website to assist other seniors suffering from depression. Seniors have the highest suicide rate of any age group in Canada, according to Baycrest. Created by Baycrest’s centre for mental health, the website offers information and encouragement to seniors and families affected by “late-life” depression. Burns-Weinrib is sharing her experiences publicly to encourage other seniors suffering from depression to seek professional help. “I think that this is something that should be talked about, not brushed under the carpet. I will talk about it whenever and wherever I can,” she said in a statement. “When you get older, you face a lot of losses – the loss of your job due to forced retirement or it just disappears, the loss of family

members and friends. You lose your physical health, have less money to live on, and you become more dependent on others. I’ve learned that these are all factors that can trigger depression in seniors.” Empowering The website was created by Baycrest’s chief of psychiatry, Dr. Robert Madan. “This website helps visitors understand late-life depression in a way that is friendly, empowering and positive,” he said in a statement. “Depression is not a normal part of aging that’s just supposed to be expected and endured.” The website, which includes videos of Baycrest experts, addresses issues such as warning signs of d e p re s s i o n , t re a t m e n t options, depression in longterm care and the difference between healthy grieving and signs that grief is complicated by depression. The website aims to help

people overcome the fear and stigma associated with mental illness that often prevents people from seeking professional help. “Many older adults have grown up with the idea that depression is something you can’t talk about openly because it’s perceived as a personal failing or a weakness,” said Madan, who is also an assistant professor of geriatric psychiatry at the University of Toronto. “This website helps older adults understand that depression is a treatable medical illness, just like diabetes or heart disease.” Over time, Madan wants to include other geriatric mental health issues such as anxiety, bipolar disorder and dementia. In addition to BurnsWeinrib’s financial contribution, the website is funded by the AFP Innovation Fund and the Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation.

helping people and businesses offset their carbon footprint. “I was really impressed with their idea, and immediately reached out to them to see how we could work together. The result is that, as a group, for every new car sold, we’re planting a tree in the customers’name.“ To date, The Carbon Farmer has planted over 300,000 trees, with plans to more than double that number in the coming year. “That goes hand in hand with Subaru, a very environmentally-friendly company,” says Vigliatore. “The manufacturing centre is a zero-landfill facility, they have a line of hybrid cars, and zero emission cars. The whole Subaru focus is environmental responsibility.” The Vigliatore family has been serving the area since 1975, and serving Subaru customers since 1986. The group’s Scarboro Kia dealership opened in 1999, one of the first in Canada, follwed by Markham Subaru in 2004, and Rouge Valley

Mitsubishi in 2012. Unlike many ‘corporate style’ dealerships, Scarboro Subaru strives to create a comfortable, family-like atmosphere.
