As the Lady in Black, Gandy will serve as a key ambassador for Darlington Raceway throughout the year. She will represent the track at various community and media events as well as the 69th annual Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend. “We interviewed a number of very talented candidates for our Lady in Black position. Cydney, being born and raised in Darlington, understands how important the track is to the local community, state and region.”

CYDNEY GANDY IS LADY IN BLACK FOR 2018 Gandy was selected from over 30 candidates that submitted an online application for the position. “I’m excited about this opportunity to serve as the Lady in Black,” Gandy said. “I was a finalist for the position when Kaitlyn Bailey earned it in 2014 and decided to give it another try this year, which I’m glad I

did.” Gandy, a native of Darlington, is a 2012 graduate of Hartsville High School. She will be completing her second degree from Francis Marion University in May, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She currently works in the Neonatal SEE

Gibson’s Wheel Alignment & Tire Service has been serving Hartsville for over 50 years Started by E. L. “Hoot” Gibson in 1963, Gibson’s Wheel Alignment & Tire Service started out in a small metal building at 200½ Darlington Avenue and began an automotive service tradition that has last over 50 years. In 1985 Gibson’s Tire Service (as it is most commonly known) was sold to E.L. Gibson’s son, Gene Gibson, who he grew the business that his father had

started. Quality automotive repairs and a dedication to providing good service made the business thrive, which in time required more space. So a new, bigger shop was built, where they continue to excel in providing Hartsville residents with great service. While Gibson’s does provide great tire prices and alignment service, they also provide a vast array of serv-

ice such as oil changes, brake repair, engine diagnostics, replacing shocks and struts, A/C repair and nearly any other service your car may require. They are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.– 5 p.m. The technicians at Gibson’s Wheel Alignment & Tire Service are ready to meet your automotive needs.

Spiro’s Wingz & Ale named Best Place To Get Wings

Spiro’s Wingz & Ale, 500 S. 5th Street, was opened in 2007 by owners Kirk and Donna Spires. The location of the restaurant was the old bus station that ran from the early 1950’s until the 1990’s and the Red Fox Den. Several businesses occupied the space until 2006, when the owners started major renovations to make ti the trendy sports bar and restaurant that is today. Decorated with many of Spiro’s own collectable rock and roll memorabilia, it has become a favorite spot in Hartsville where people meet to socialize, enjoy a great meal and watch sporting events with their family,

Dr. Ted Newman, O.D. voted Best Eye Doctor By Scarlett Caddell The ballots are counted and the reader’s choice for “Best Eye Doctor” is Dr. Ted Newman. As I spoke with Dr. Newman it was easy to see why he is well-liked. His office manager, Ann Rush, says “He is a very special person. Patients love him and the staff loves him because he treats everyone like family.” Dr. Newman has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He is a Doctor of Optometry, graduating from Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Ill. After graduating college he and his wife Laura moved to Hartsville in the fall of 1980. He has been in business at Pee Dee Eye Associates for 37 years. Altogether Pee Dee Eye has been in Hartsville for 53 years. As many of you will remember Dr. Tucker had already been practicing there for 16 years. Presently there are two other providers at Pee Dee Eye

DR. TED NEWMAN Associates, Dr. Stephen Flowers, and owner Dr. W. Troy Alexander, who both grew up in Hartsville. Although he was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Newman has his roots deep in our town of Hartsville. He says, “I’m here to stay. All my children were born and raised here.” His family includes his wife Laura, three daughters and three sons-inlaw, and eight grandchildren. He and Laura have been happily married for 42 years. He says, “My wife deserves a

lot of credit for my success.” She is retired from Carolina Elementary where she was a Media Specialist. She has also worked with Pee Dee Eye and been a part of the business. Pee Dee Eye is a very unique practice as they focus more on medical issues than just routine eye exams. They are on the trauma staff at the ER for calls, so they see a lot of medical problems. Dr. Newman says that 75 percent of his patients are medical issues, such as diabetes,

glaucoma, macular degenerate, cataracts, etc. Pee Dee Eye is a full service lab with a wide range of sunglasses, prescription glasses and contact lenses. “We have people who drive from out of town to get their glasses with us because of our great selection,” says the office manager. Ann also says of Dr. Newman, “Over the years patients have built a trust. They know he’s going to do the right thing. When patients come in it’s more than just an exam, they want to catch up with him.” Dr. Newman stays busy with the community. He was off to Rotary for lunch after our meeting. Pee Dee Eye has a growing number of employees of around 20. Everyone was quick to say that their entire practice works well together as a team. Congratulations Dr. Newman for being voted the Best Eye Doctor in Darlington County once again.

Martha Flowers was voted Best Teacher in Darlington County. She has been teaching for 21 years. She currently teaches Exceptional Education at both Darlington High School and Mayo High School for Math, Science, and Technology. History of H & R Block During World War II, Henry W. Bloch was a young Army Air Forces navigator who wanted to start a family business with his brothers in Kansas City. Home from the war in 1946, Henry saw a pamphlet suggesting a bright future for companies serving small businesses, and it fired his imagination. That year, Henry and his older brother, Leon, borrowed $5,000 and opened a small bookkeeping business on Main Street in downtown Kansas City. However, four months later, they had few clients and Leon decided to seek a law degree. Henry wanted to keep trying with the fledgling business and placed a newspaper ad for help-wanted. He got an unexpected response—from his mother—who proposed that Henry hire his younger brother, Richard, for the job. Henry and Richard Bloch jointly ran their United Business Company, which focused on bookkeeping, but also did some income tax work for clients. The brothers

found that doing taxes was time consuming and they decided to end that type of service. One of their clients, John White, an ad salesman for The Kansas City Star newspaper, had a different idea; he suggested the Blochs make tax preparation a separate business and developed an ad announcing $5 tax services. The Blochs were not convinced, but they agreed to run the ad in January 1955. The next day, the brothers had an office full of tax clients, and H&R Block was born. In 1956, the Bloch’s decided to expand and picked New York City. The move was profitable, but neither brother wanted to move to New York, so they agreed to sell that regional operation to two local accountants. However, since the would-be buyers could not meet the asking price, the parties agreed the Bloch brothers would get $10,000, plus royalties from the tax operation, creating the first H&R Block franchise tax office. The Bloch brothers

chose to spell the name “Block” with a K to ensure the name is not mispronounced “blotch.” In the following years, H&R Block grew quickly and went public in 1962, then opened its first tax training school in 1965 to meet the demand for skilled tax professionals at its franchise offices. A TV ad campaign begun in 1972 featured Henry Bloch and became the springboard for H&R Block becoming one of the most widely recognized brand names in the U.S. In 1980 H&R Block purchased the Compuserve online service. H&R Block is a global consumer tax services provider, having prepared more than 720 million tax returns by and through retail locations and digital solutions since 1955. There are approximately 12,000 company-owned and franchise retail locations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories, on U.S. military bases around the world, and in Canada, Australia and India.

Carolina Pines Labor & Delivery Nurses receive SCBOI training Perinatal nurses of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center took part in a day-long training exercise with the South Carolina Birth Outcomes Initiative (SCBOI) mobile simulation center SimCOACH on Tuesday, April 17. This marks the third year that Carolina Pines has participated in the program which is part of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Palmetto Health CME Organization. The SimCOACH mobile simulation laboratory has traveled across the state of South Carolina, providing experience for health care providers to gain hands-on practice in high-risk procedures in a safe environment. The program, Birth Outcomes Initiative (BOI) strives to reduce primary cesarean section deliveries by supporting vaginal births. According to the outreach educators on site, in a five-year period (2011 to 2016) statistics have shown that primary C-section rate in SC has gone down 9%, which is significant.

Daniel, Md, FACOG. The objectives included: • Review and strategize the incorporation of maternal safety bundle tools for obstetric emergencies with an emphasis on maternal hemorrhage. • Recognize and respond to obstetric and neonatal patients with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity. • Discuss aspects of prenatal care and delivery management that promotes a patient’s ability to deliver vaginally. • Respond to obstetric and neonatal emergency scenarios. 2018 Darlington County Relay For Life Our theme this year is: “Give Cancer the Boot”. The Relay will be held Saturday, May 5, at Byerly Park beginning at noon until 10 p.m. This is a new time schedule with more daytime for our children and seniors that have issues with night time activities. There will be fun activities for all ages and a variety of lap adventures. One highlight of the Relay For Life is the luminary lap when the names of those who have survived or whose memory we will be sharing is read as participants walk silently [and hopefully, everyone is silent] to show respect.
