On March 16, 2017 God called home the youngest sister of four. Her homecoming was special for those gathered around her bedside as she walked through Heaven’s door. Her life for years was haunted by sickness and pain. She walked with God searching for heavenly gain. There seemed to be no win for her on earthly domain. No ownership of fortune nor fame, but God in her heart did remain. God blessed Marlene with numerous talents over the years, thru her playing and singing. Lives were touched and a shedding of tears. Her love for God was exemplified through music and song. The last words Marlene heard was this special song - Take my hand precious Lord and lead me on and let me stand. Her exit from this life into the next was grand; holding on to Jesus’ hand. Family and friends have shed many tears remembering the voice of songs lingering in our ears. Your footmarker so befitting to your memory will remain for years. We know you have no more pain nor sorrows. It ended when you reached Heaven’s gates for all your tomorrows.

Footmarker Music is the Prayer The Heart Sings With cherished memories from your loving family.

The real cost of college By John R. Coble III Coble Wealth Management How much will your family end up paying for college? Your household’s income may have less influence than you think – and some private colleges may be cheaper than you assume. Private schools sometimes extend the best aid offers. Yes – it is true that the more money you earn and the more assets you have in a tax-advantaged college savings plan, the harder it becomes to qualify for financial aid. Merit aid is another matter, however; most private colleges and universities that boast major endowment funds support healthy, merit-based aid packages. These scholarships and institutional grants – awarded irrespective of a family’s financial need – can reduce the “sticker shock” of a college education. A study from the National Association of College and University Business Officers found that

grant-based aid effectively cut tuition and fees by an average of 48.6% in the 2015-16 academic year. If your child can fit into the top quarter of a college’s student population in terms of grades or achievement, merit aid may be a possibility. A college that might be your student’s second or third choice might offer him or her more merit aid than the first choice. Relatively speaking, some universities demand more from poorer families. An analysis published in 2016 by New America noted 102 U.S. colleges with endowments of greater than $250 million that charged the poorest students more than $10,000 in tuition for the 2013-14 academic year. Out of more than 1,400 colleges and universities New America studied, hundreds expected households earning $30,000 or less per year to pay the equivalent of half or more of their earnings on higher ed. The state legislature of

New York made a striking move this spring. It decided to waive tuition for many fulltime undergraduate students at both 2-year and 4-year public colleges and universities within its borders. To qualify for this tuition break, households had to earn less than $100,000 annually – and students had to pledge to work and reside in New York state after they earned their degrees. (The annual earnings threshold will presently rise to $125,000.) Families and their students will still have to pay fees (and if needed, room and board). New York is not the only state making such an offer. Programs like the Tennessee Promise and the Oregon Promise have made community college tuition free in those states. Delaware and Minnesota have adopted similar plans, and Rhode Island and Arkansas also have like policies in the works. Any little tuition break helps, especially in these times. According to the Institute for College Access and

Success, about 70% of college graduates in 2015 owed

a great deal of money; their average education debt

was $30,100.

HARTSVILLE RED FOXES Foxes survive against Bruins By Coach Jimmy White The Red Fox football team hung on to win a 26-25 thriller against South Florence Thursday at Memorial Stadium in Florence. The win ran Hartsville’s record to 2-0 while the Bruins dropped their opener to fall to 0-1. While the game had a fantastic finish, both teams made it an ugly game to watch. Fumbles and penalties dominated the game to the point that the game never developed any rhythm. South Florence received the opening kickoff and punted after a short drive. In the first of many mental mistakes, the Foxes caught the punt inside the one yard line. After moving the ball out for first down, the Bruins took over inside the Red Fox 35 yard line. South Florence finally settled for a 30 yard field goal giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead. On Hartsville’s next play the Foxes fumbled and the Bruin defender took it in for 6 points. The PAT gave South Florence an early 10-0 lead. When the Foxes took over on the 20 after the ensu-

ing kickoff, Tiyon Evans broke an 80 yard touchdown run on the first play. The PAT made it a 10-7 game. After each team exchanged possessions, Evans exploded for an apparent 75 yard TD that was called back because of a penalty. The second quarter saw both move the ball between the 20 yard lines, but no points were put on the board. Hartsville did attempt a 42 yard field goal that came up short and the half ended with the Foxes trailing 10-7. The second half began with the two teams exchanging

turnovers. The Foxes recovered the Bruins’ fumble on the 32 and AJ Joyner connected with Christopher Morris with a 68 yard TD pass on the first play. The PAT was blocked and the Foxes led 13-10. Both teams seemed to think it was “Christmas in August” as they exchanged gift turnovers until AJ Joyner connected again with Morris for a 30 yard TD pass with 1:04 left in the quarter. The point after attempt was no good and Hartsville led 19-10 as the quarter ended. The fourth quarter turned into a mistake fest with each

team having turnovers and numerous penalties. With 6:19 left in the game the Bruins scored on a 1 yard run, but missed the point after to make the score 19-16 in favor of Hartsville. The Foxes went 3 and out, punting the ball back to South Florence at midfield. The Bruins drove down to the Foxes’ 1 yard line before being driven back to the 16 yard line. Key play was a sack on 3rd down, forcing the 24 yard field goal making the score 19-19 with 2:11 left in the game. The Red Foxes moved down the field behind good running of Collins Bishop. Joyner then found Evans for a 35 yard TD pass with 36 seconds left in the game. The all important PAT was good by Mike Norris making the score 26-19. South Florence took advantage of an unsportsmanlike penalty after the previous touchdown and an offsides penalty on the kickoff forcing the Foxes to kick off from their 20 yard line. The Bruins combined some good plays and three costly penalties on Hartsville to score on a 4 yard
