How many of these slogans do you know? I’ve been seeing a lot of TV commercials lately for BDO. You know the slogan, “People who know, know BDO.” While it is a catchy slogan that is ingrained in my memory, I really don’t know BDO. So, I Googled it. I learned the network originally formed in 1963 as Binder Seidman International by firms from Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, UK and US. It is coordinated by BDO Global Coordination B.V., with an office in Zaventem, Belgium. The name BDO, devised in 1973, is an abbreviation for Binder Dijker

Otte & Co. So, now we know! Thinking about recognizable advertising slogans, I started making a list. Here’s some really old ones: • “Melts in Your Mouth, Not in Your Hands.” This M&Ms slogan has been around more than 60 years. I remember it connected with

a black and white cartoon commercial featuring M&M stick figures jumping off a diving board into a pool of chocolate. • “They’re Gr-r-r-reat.” Kelloggs Frosted Flakes mascot, Tony the Tiger, is famous for roaring this catchphrase for as long as I can remember. • “Snap, Crackle and Pop” has been synonymous with the Rice Krispies brand since the 1930s. • “All the News That's Fit to Print” has appeared on the masthead of The New York Times since 1897. Owner Adolph S. Ochs cre-

ated the famous slogan as a declaration of the newspaper’s intention to report the news impartially. • “The Quicker Picker Upper.” Bounty paper towels, made by Procter & Gamble, has used this catchy phrase for almost 50 years now. • “Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm is There” was created with a jingle written by Barry Manilow in 1971. • “Nationwide Is On Your Side” has been ‘on your side’ for over 40 years. • “You’re In Good Hands” has become synonymous with Allstate Insurance

Company since the 1950s. • “We Bring Good Things to Life,” was initiated by General Electric Co. in 1979. Today’s slogan is “Imagination at Work.” • “Finger Lickin’ Good” is quickly identified with KFC. • “Just Do It,” says Nike • “Got Milk?” Know that phrase, but I wonder how many people know it comes from the California Milk Processor Board? • “Betcha Can’t Eat Just One.” Lay’s Potato Chips’ catchy dare latched onto our addiction for this crispy, salty and tasty snack. • “Can You Hear Me

Now? Good.” Verizon introduced this iconic slogan in 2002. • “A Diamond is Forever” has appeared in every single De Beers advertisement since 1948. It was named the best slogan of the century in 1999 by AdAge. • “It Keeps Going, and Going, and Going...” We cannot forget the Energizer battery slogan. • “I'm Lovin’ It,” McDonald’s campaign was launched in 2003 and still stands strong today.

Board of Education announces locations for new schools The Darlington County Board of Education has announced the locations for new schools in Hartsville and Lamar. The third new school, which will combine BrunsonDargan Elementary and Cain Elementary, will be built in Darlington on the site of the existing Cain Elementary School. District officials and the construction team evaluated

extensively more than 19 sites in Hartsville and eight sites in Lamar before selecting the final locations of the new schools. Lamar’s new school, which will combine Lamar Elementary School and Spaulding Elementary School, will be built on property directly across from the intersection of County Club Road and Lamar Highway. school, which will combine Washington Street Elementary School and West Hartsville Elementary School, will be built on Bay Road between Bobo Newsom Highway and Westwinds Drive. In the fall, the school district held a series of public meetings in Darlington, Hartsville, and Lamar to share with the public the process the board would follow to select the land. In the public meetings, officials also reviewed the site selection criteria. This extensive criteria list included adequate acreage, little or no wetlands, suitable soil condi-

tions, no environment contaminants, no high-powered voltage lines, transportation/roadway requirements, and utility requirements, as well as approval from the S.C. Department of Education’s Office of School Facilities and the S.C. Department of Transportation. Of course, the land also had to be within the district’s budget. In all, the district evaluated more than 25 sites in Lamar and Hartsville before selecting the final two. From the beginning, the location of the new Darlington school was set at Cain Elementary School, based on the 2012 School Facilities

Plan. “No location is perfect, but we have worked tremendously hard to evaluate every possible location in each school zone,” said Jamie Morphis, chairman of the Darlington County Board of Education. “I am confident we have chosen the best possible sites for our new schools, and I look forward to breaking ground and getting these new schools built for the children of Darlington County.” The district will hold another series of public meetings at the end of the month to update the community on the building

process and to share initial drawings of the new schools. In Darlington, the community construction update will be held on Monday, March 26, at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria of Cain Elementary School. In Lamar, the community construction update will be held on Tuesday, March 27, at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria of Lamar High School. In Hartsville, the community construction update will be held on Thursday, March 29, at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Washington Street Elementary School. The board has not made any decisions about what will happen to the current school facilities.

Governor’s School student artwork on display at Hartsville Museum

Artwork by students at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) will be featured at the W. Reaves McCall Gallery at the Hartsville Museum through April 13. The exhibit is being shown in conjunction with the National Youth Art Month, which takes place annually in March. For two weeks in January, Interim offers GSSM students a wide variety of exciting course offerings that allow students to tap into undiscovered talents and explore new possibilities. Art in the Interim, taught by GSSM’s Visual Arts Coordinator, Patz Fowle, and GSSM Artist in Residence, Mike Fowle, is a popular choice during Interim. To inspire the souls of these young artists, Art in the Interim students went on excursions to Columbia art galleries and artists’ studios.

Upon returning to their own art studio on campus, students explored traditional and innovative art techniques and processes to create meaningful works of art using a variety of art media. Jay Medina, a GSSM senior, said, “Art in the Interim has given me the time and opportunity to discover art I didn’t know I could make. The enriching StudentChoice art program at GSSM provides individuals the opportunity to explore, experiment, and thrive in a creative studio-based art environment. “It’s so thrilling to work alongside the creative leaders and innovators of tomorrow and to witness the creativity that emerges in an authentic way through artistic self-expression, says Ms. Fowle. “It is obvious to see—with works that range from watercolor, pen and ink, acrylic on canvas and even three-dimensional,
