One of the most well-kept holiday traditions in the Hartsville community is the Hartsville Christmas parade. The 2017 parade, sponsored by Sonoco, SPC Credit Union and North Industrial Machine, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 9 as a part of the Hartsville for the Holidays season. As a collaboration of the community, the Hartsville Christmas parade will feature Hartsville’s first responders, local businesses, marching bands, dance troops, and an appearance from the Hartsville Northern League Minor League All Stars 2017 AAA Dixie Youth World Series champions as grand marshalls. The JROTC cadets of Hartsville High School will

present our nation’s colors. An appearance by jolly Santa Claus will end this season’s parade. “Every year our Hartsville for the Holidays team looks forward to showcasing the spirit of the holidays in our small town,” says Marketing and Events Coordinator Jordan Braddock, “We’re proud to continue the beloved tradition of the Hartsville Christmas parade highlighting our many our local businesses and organizations.” The parade route will begin on South Fifth Street at the Newsome Warehouse parking lot and proceed north on South Fifth Street The parade will turn right onto Laurens Avenue, just before Applebee’s, and turn left on South

Fourth Street past the Fairfield Inn. The parade will continue on Fourth Street, past the Hartsville Farmers Market on East Carolina Avenue, and will turn left onto East College Avenue. The parade will then turn left again onto North Fifth Street before turning right onto West Carolina Avenue. The parade will end at Thornwell School for the Arts, 437 West Carolina Avenue. The parking lot at Newsome Warehouse will be the “staging area” for vehicles and floats participating in the parade. This area will only be used for those purposes. At the close of the parade, participants will be dropped off at Thornwell School where they can be picked up. All floats will then return to Newsome Warehouse for breakdown, helping prevent stoppages in the parade flow. Returning floats can make their way back to Newsome Warehouse by way of Marlboro Avenue and Sixth Street. Parade units are

asked to make sure that any candy given out along route is not thrown from vehicles, but is rather handed out by those walking in the parade. For spectator parking availability, all public parking lots will remain open. Traffic will be delayed as a result of the parade. Parade goers are encouraged to visit the Hartsville Farmers Market before and after the parade. The Market is located on East Carolina Avenue and begins at 9 a.m., ending at 1p.m. Additionally, after his parade appearance, Santa Claus will be available for photographs at the Hartsville Museum’s, “Simply Christmas Exhibit”, located at 222 N. Fifth St. from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Photos are free. Please bring your own camera. For more information, contact Jordan Braddock, Marketing and Events Coordinator at 843-917-0602 or jordan.braddock@hartsvillesc.gov.

City of Hartsville makes progress with waterpark expansion project After breaking ground on Friday, November 3, at Byerly Park the City of Hartsville continues progress at the site of the waterpark expansion project. Residents and visitors to the area can now see the administration’s plans coming to life as water features are beginning to be mapped and park layouts created. House Speaker Jay Lucas joined members of Hartsville City Council for the groundbreaking. City Administration and Parks Committee members were also in attendance. “While our priority is giving a new and wonderful recreation opportunity to Hartsville’s citizens, we antic-

ipate a significant number of regional visitors will come here to enjoy the new waterpark,” said Parks Committee Chairwoman Nancy McGee. “It is sure to make a positive economic impact on our city.” With the expansion of the Piratesville Splash Pad, the City of Hartsville aims to broaden its reputation as a regional tourism destination. Since opening on July 4th, 2013, the Piratesville Splash Pad has averaged over 20,000 attendees per season, offering younger children a place to cool off with spray cannons, geysers, short slides and dump buckets. The developments to this popular attraction will cater to wider

age groups. The new waterpark will host a capacity of 1,300 visitors, more than eight times the current Splash Pad. Guests will be able to enjoy more waterpark features, including a 1,000-foot lazy river, a zero entry pool, a wave pool, a speed body slide, a pair of tubular water slides and three mat racing slides. Cabana rentals, party huts, and food trucks will also assist in making the new waterpark a celebrated destination for residents and visitors from throughout the region. Mayor Pennington added, “Our team has been working hard on this vision, and to

increase and improve upon the quality of life offerings that our citizens and guests

deserve.” The City of Hartsville expects the waterpark expan-

sion to be completed by summer 2018.

Did you know? Dreidels are especially popular during the eight-day Jewish festival of Chanukah. Even though they may seem like novelty items for children, dreidels have a rich and interesting history. In ancient times, Greek Syrians infiltrated areas where many practicing Jews resided. Over time, the Greek Syrians became more oppressive and tried to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very successful. As a result, the Greek Syrians

established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the Torah in outlying areas and forests.

When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their texts and take out dreisays instead, dels Chabad.org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun, Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.” TF17C586

HARTSVILLE RED FOXES Foxes fall to South Pointe By Coach Jimmy White

For the second year in a row the Hartsville Red Foxes faced the South Pointe Stallions for the 4-A state championship. Last year the Stallions defeated the Red Foxes for their third consecutive state championship, and their fifth overall since 2008. Once again the Stallions proved that they are the best team by defeating Hartsville 38-14 in a dominating performance. The Foxes fall to 13-2 while South Pointe finished 15-0 as the fifth ranked team in the country. The Foxes tried to pull off an onside kick to start the game, and while they recovered the ball officials ruled it did not travel the required 10 yards. With great field position the Stallions quickly moved down field as QB Derion Kendrick scored on an 11 yard run. Potter added the PAT and the Foxes trailed 7-0 with only 2:14 off the clock. After Hartsville was forced to punt the Stallions quickly moved 57 yards for another score as Kendrick threw a 14 yard TD pass to Scott Robinson. The extra point was good and the Foxes trailed 14-0 with 2:02 left in the first quarter. The Red Foxes got on the board with a 14 play, 61 yard drive that ended with an A.J. Joyner four yard run. Caleb Caldwell added the PAT and Hartsville trailed 14-7. The Stallions answered

quickly with a 66 yard drive that ended with a Marice Whitlock one yard run. The PAT by Potter put South Pointe up 21-7 as the half ended. After stopping the Foxes on their first drive in the third quarter the Stallions moved down the field behind the running and passing of Kendrick to add another score when Ty Good caught a two yard pass from Kendrick making it 28-7. Once again Hartsville was unable to move the ball and a bad snap to the punter gave South Pointe the ball on the Foxes’ 19 yard line. One play later Kendrick connected with Whitlock for another score and the Foxes trailed 357. The fourth quarter saw Potter add a 23 yard FG

and the Stallions led 38-7. With 1:19 left in the game Dariyan Pendergrass scored on a two yard run and Caldwell’s PAT made the final score 38-14. The Bizzell’s Offensive Player of the Game was Collins Bishop as he had nine carries for 39 yards and did a great job blocking. The Bizzell’s Defensive Player of the Game was LB Kevon Haigler who had eight tackles and a sack. Despite the loss the Foxes had a great season, finishing 13-2. With a young team this was a credit to Coach Calabrese and his excellent staff. Congratulations Red Foxes.
